PGA Tour 2K22: Everything You Need To Know

Here's everything you need to know about PGA Tour 2K22 and Tiger Woods' involvement.

This article contains information about the 'release-date' of either a movie, game or product. Unless stated explicitly, release dates are speculative & subject to change. See something wrong? Contact us here

After the release of PGA Tour 2K21 to solid reviews, fans are expecting to see PGA Tour 2K22 come out in relatively normal fashion, or that’s what we would have said had 2K Games not announced that Tiger Woods had exclusively signed with them, meaning that the legendary golfer will not be appearing in this year’s EA Sports PGA Tour, which is pretty shocking since those games were once called Tiger Woods PGA Tour.

Does that mean we’ll be seeing Tiger Woods PGA Tour 2K22 this year? We’ll have to wait and see but that’s a huge get for 2K Games, albeit somewhat limiting to the competition and almost making this a monopoly on realistic golf simulators, though we’ll have to see if his name is enough to make this the better-selling game of the same sport.

Table of Contents

Will pga tour 2k22 become tiger woods pga tour 2k22, release date: when is pga tour 2k22 coming out, is pga tour 2k22 coming to next-gen.

So, without further ado, here’s everything we know about PGA Tour 2K22:

Considering how PGA Tour 2K21 was the first game in this series, we don’t think that this series will be rebranded unless 2K Games makes a major announcement.

Also, while Tiger Woods is a beloved athlete, he also got in trouble for a sex scandal a couple of years ago but enough time may have passed for people to move on from that bit of controversy.

2K Games has yet to announce PGA Tour 2K22 but the big Tiger Woods bombshell should mean that a new title is in the works, especially since so many fans liked the previous game.

If we do get PGA Tour 2K22, we should probably expect it around August like last year’s initial installment.

Since we’re getting EA Sports PGA Tour on next-gen consoles, it’s easy enough to assume that the same thing will happen to PGA Tour 2K22, assuming that the devs are already working on the PS5 and Xbox Series X versions.

Like NBA 2K21, we wouldn’t be surprised if they release a PS4 and Xbox One version with a paid upgrade for the PS5 and Xbox Series X.

Tiger Woods Signs New Exclusive Multi-Year Deal With 2K For PGA Tour Golf Games After 10 Years With EA

2K has signed Woods to an "exclusive, long-term partnership" and has acquired HB Studios.

By Eddie Makuch on March 18, 2021 at 12:45PM PDT

Major news in the world of sports video games today as 2K Sports has signed legendary athlete Tiger Woods to an "exclusive, long-term partnership" for new golf games. Additionally, 2K has acquired HB Studios, the developers of The Golf Club series and PGA Tour 2K21.

Financial terms of 2K's deal with Woods and the buyout of HB Studios were not disclosed. This is a major deal for sports games, as Woods was previously signed with EA Sports for 10 years. 2K president 2K president David Ismailer compared the business relationship to similar ones the company struck with Michael Jordan for 2K sports games, calling Woods an icon of the sport.

Woods is currently recovering for a horrible car crash in February that left him with serious injuries. In a statement dated January 2021, Woods said he is "looking forward to making my return to the video game landscape."

"I'm honored to take part in this opportunity and look forward to sharing my expertise and insights as we build the future of golf video games together," he said.

2K's deal with Woods covers the rights to his name and likeness to appear "exclusively" in the PGA Tour 2K series, along with any other golf games that 2K publishers. Woods will have an "active role" in the game's development as an executive director and consultant on the franchise.

2K also said it will work with Wood's TGR Foundation in some charitable capacity.

"In golf, there is no bigger icon than Tiger Woods. Like the rest of the world, we were saddened to hear of his recent accident, and we wish him a full and smooth recovery," Ismailer said in the announcement. "We have been eager to announce our partnership with Tiger, whose legendary career has transcended the sport. We are thrilled to have him join our PGA TOUR 2K series as an Executive Director."

Before this, Woods was in business with EA Sports for 10 years with the Tiger Woods PGA Tour game franchise. EA and Woods would eventually end their deal, with EA signing Rory McIlroy to a new deal that started with Rory McIlroy PGA Tour in 2015 , but the game was a disappointment and no sequels were released. More recently, reporter Jeff Grubb has said EA is looking to make golf video games again , but now we know one athlete who won't be part of it: Tiger Woods.

This new rule means Tiger Woods can play the PGA Tour’s biggest events in 2025!

Published: 19 June 2024 Last updated: 19 June 2024

Tiger Woods has been granted a special exemption to play in all of the PGA Tour's Signature Events from 2025.

Tiger Woods has been granted a special exemption to play in all of the PGA Tour's Signature Events from 2025.

Tiger Woods has only teed it up in four events this year, but all that could change in 2025 after a new exemption was rubber-stamped by the PGA Tour Policy board.

Christened the ‘Tiger Rule’, the board has agreed to grant the 15-time Major champion entry into the big-money Signature Events, despite him not meeting the qualifying criteria. He’ll receive a ‘Lifetime Achievement Exemption’, meaning he can tee it up in the limited-field tournaments with their big-money purses. The inaugural season of eight Signature Events concludes with this week’s Travelers Championship with $20m on offer.

Whether Woods’ fitness allows him to take up any of the opportunities remains to be seen because the 49-year-old has played just four events so far in 2024 and has cast doubt on his future in the game.

What has been clear in all of his appearances is that the 82-time PGA Tour winner needs to play more if he is to become competitive again. He withdrew from his own Genesis Invitational, before breaking the record for the most consecutive cuts made at The Masters , finishing 60th at Augusta. Missed cuts followed at the PGA Championship at Valhalla and most recently at the US Open at Pinehurst, after which Woods admitted he didn’t know if that was his last homeland Open.

Tiger Woods was feeling the heat at Pinehurst

He is still expected to head to Scotland and play in The Open at Royal Troon in July, but speculation is rife that Woods could call it a day at the end of the season.

Approval of the new ‘Tiger rule’ comes as no real surprise with the Tour’s Player Advisory Council, backing the exemption during a meeting at the Charles Schwab Challenge in May.

In the PAC’s monthly newsletter for Tour members, it said: “These exemptions are intended to capture players who are important to the tournament sponsor but who are not otherwise qualified.

“To maximize these spots for the membership and to provide optimal flexibility for the tournament sponsor, the PAC supported adding an additional sponsor exemption recognizing Tiger Woods in his own category as a player who has reached an exceptional lifetime achievement threshold of 80+ career wins.”

Tiger Woods has 82 PGA Tour wins.

Adam Scott and Webb Simpson – two player directors – faced criticism this season after being awarded sponsor exemptions for Signature Events.

As well as the exemption for Woods, further changes look set to be made to the events in 2025, with the fields increased to 72 players and a selection of alternates to maintain that number should anyone pull out. It is believed that discussions around Signature Event cuts are ongoing with the Board debating whether to remove cuts from all of the tournaments or include them at every event.

What are the PGA Tour Signature Events and who has won them in 2024?

Scottie Scheffler won his fifth tournament of 2024 at the Memorial

World No.1 Scottie Scheffler has been victorious in three of the seven Signature Events played to date, which has helped him rocket up the PGA Tour’s all-time money list .

Chris Kirk won at The Sentry to win the inaugural event, before Wyndham Clark lifted the AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am title in February. Hideki Matsuyama won his first title in more than two years at The Genesis Invitational, before Scheffler got his first Signature Event win at the Arnold Palmer Invitational in March.

Little more than a month later, and just a week after winning the Masters, Scheffler won again at the RBC Heritage, before Rory McIlroy romped away at May’s Wells Fargo Championship at his beloved Quail Hollow. Scheffler completed his hat-trick at the Memorial for his fifth PGA Tour win of the season.

After major letdown, Tiger Woods confronts one tough truth

  • Follow on Twitter
  • Follow on Instagram

Tiger Woods missed the cut at the 2024 PGA Championship.

Getty Images

LOUISVILLE, Ky. — On Friday night Tiger Woods concluded play at the 2024 PGA Championship. And for the first time in a long time, the golf world’s reaction to his round felt like one collective shrug.

For years now (for decades, really) we’ve hung on Woods’ every shot in these major championship starts. We’ve studied his gait. His ball speed. His putting stroke. In his latest comeback we’ve taken little moments (a flagged long iron, say) and wondered if they could turn to big moments. If he could just string enough of ’em together … could he win again?

But this week was different.

There were other factors involved, of course. Scottie Scheffler’s arrest loomed over the day’s proceedings, for one thing. And second-round tee time was delayed until mid-afternoon; by the time Woods addressed a half-empty press room, eight shots off the cut line, it was nearly 8 p.m. Asked to describe his week, he sighed and smiled.

“The week? It was a great week being here, being here at Valhalla, and unfortunately my scores did not indicate how the people treated me and how great a week I had,” he said. “Unfortunately, I hit too many shots.”

There was no denying that part. Woods had just birdied the 18th hole to close out a second-round six-over 77; paired with his first-round 72 that left him at 7 over par for the tournament, the same score as club pro sensation Michael Block.

Still, Woods showed enough form that optimists could find bright spots. For 16 holes on Thursday he was a relatively effortless one under par. He was moving well, too. I’m not saying he looked like a future major winner. But a major top-20er? You could talk yourself into that.

But then Woods showed enough weakness to feed the pessimists, too. First he failed to finish off his opening round, three-putting his final two holes from relatively innocuous spots on the green. Then he got off to a disastrous start to his second round, going par-triple-bogey-triple out of the gate. He played those six holes in nine over par. The other 30? A respectable 2 under.

In other words, there are no hot takes or strong conclusions to accompany Woods’ week. He’s not definitively done. He’s also not definitively back. This didn’t feel like a new beginning but it didn’t feel like the beginning of the end, either. He can walk okay. His swing looks good. But he looked rough around the edges, too. He played a stretch of disappointing golf and golf fans would like to see him better. On Friday night he made it clear that he expects better, too.

“I just kept making mistakes and [doing] things you can’t do, not just in tournaments but in majors especially. And I just kept making them.” He sounded incredulous at the idea.

He, too, could find some bright spots. “Physically, yes, I am better than I was a month ago,” he said, referring to his made cut at the Masters. And he added that he’s still confident his game will get better in time. But at that thought —  in time  — Woods suddenly looked a little sad. Time remains an enemy.

“I just need to play more,” he said. “Unfortunately I just haven’t played a whole lot of tournaments — and there aren’t a lot of tournaments on my schedule, either. Hopefully everything will somehow come together in my practice sessions at home and be ready for Pinehurst.”

That’s Woods’ current dilemma. His tough reality. His body hasn’t allowed him to play more than a handful of tournaments per year. But he  needs  more tournament reps to play well in those tournament starts. If the only thing he needs to do is the only thing he can’t, then that’s a problem without an easy answer.

It’s an especially tall task given his hand-picked schedule of the toughest, most competitive events on Tour. For three and a half years, every tournament that Tiger Woods has played has been either a major championship or an event where he’s the host. As the game has gotten more difficult he has continued to ratchet the difficulty up even further.

It’s easy to imagine an alternate future. Would a John Deere start not do him wonders? A non-major where he’s not playing host? Where he could buzz in on Tuesday and see how he felt in a lower-pressure setting? Fans of Woods still remember when he took that approach at the 2018 Valspar Championship — with great success. But 2018 was a long time ago, and it gets further every day. This is a different Woods with a different body.

It bears mentioning that Woods has added another job to his plate, too. He joined the PGA Tour’s Policy Board and now the board of its for-profit wing, PGA Tour Enterprises. Together that’s no small commitment.

“All three are important in their own different ways,” he said Friday. “For me playing for pride and what I can do out here, but also off the golf course the impact and responsibility that I have as a player director and as a representative of the players and what I can do off the golf course to help this tour.”

The player directors have insisted that they’re able to balance play with off-course efforts. But Woods also acknowledged the strain it takes.

“We just don’t sleep much,” he said. “There’s a lot of late nights and Zoom calls at odd hours of the night, all throughout the night, and lots of e-mails to read.”

This is Tiger Woods’ reality now. More emails. Fewer tournaments. An uncooperative body. A belief things can still improve. And an ongoing chase for better.

“Just keep fighting,” he said, asked what he got out of his final 14 holes, once his missed-cut fate was sealed. “Keep the pedal down, keep fighting, keep grinding, keep working hard at posting the best score that I can possibly post today. That’s all I can do. It’s going to be a lot, but I’m going to fight until the end.”

We won’t see Woods again until the U.S. Open, golf’s famously unforgiving test. Here’s hoping he inspires when we do. Hopefully everything will somehow come together , to borrow his words.

“Everything” just encompasses more than it used to.

Metrics show new competitive structure is delivering against objectives

Change Text Size

Two adjustments to the PGA TOUR’s Signature Events highlighted a PGA TOUR Policy Board/PGA TOUR Enterprises Board joint meeting in Hartford, Connecticut, on Tuesday.

The news went out to players Tuesday night as many of them prepared to play in the Travelers Championship at TPC River Highlands, the last of eight Signature Events this season.

The changes were approved after the PGA TOUR Policy Board’s comprehensive review of the 2024 schedule and competitive framework, which has met expectations to deliver a strong product to fans and sponsors. As such, it will continue apace next season with two modifications.

The first adjustment will impose a minimum field size of 72 players for the Signature Events. Although eligible players participated in Signature Events with no mandatory participation requirement this year, the eight Signature Events saw an average of one eligible player not participate, with two events having 100 percent participation and one event having a maximum of three players not participate.

The other adjustment to the Signature Events will introduce a Sponsor Exemption for Lifetime Achievement – 80 or more career victories – to recognize Tiger Woods in his own category. Among his 82 career wins, Woods won the Arnold Palmer Invitational presented by Mastercard eight times and the Memorial Tournament presented by Workday five times. Both are Signature Events.

“It was important to our membership. It's something we talked about with the PAC. It was important to our player directors. It was important to our board. It's important to me because the man, as the exemption says, has won more than 80 events," PGA TOUR Commissioner Jay Monahan said during a media session at the Travelers Championship. "And I think being able to give him the opportunity to compete in these events, any event he's ever played in, he's made it bigger, he's made it better. He's drawn more eyeballs to it. I think just as an organization, we wanted to celebrate his exceptionalism in that manner."

Throughout this review, there was discussion around applying a cut uniformly at all Signature Events, with the perspective that it could provide consistency and more excitement for fans. While no change was made by the Board during the meeting, this subject will continue to be studied throughout the remainder of the year, and as part of this process, the TOUR will garner feedback from players, title sponsors and fans.

The Policy Board also approved a proposal to delay the first collective reshuffle of all conditional categories until players in the 126-150 category have had the chance to play in approximately 3-4 Full-Field events. After that, regular reshuffles throughout the remainder of the season will continue. Exact reshuffle dates for the 2025 season will be finalized following the release of the 2025 schedule.

Other than the two adjustments to the Signature Events, Tuesday's memo delineated how the new competitive framework has delivered on its objectives and aligned with models and projections. It reduced the number of Signature Events for a schedule cadence that allows for the most flexibility for the players; succeeded in bringing the best players together more often; and preserved access points from outside the prior year’s FedExCup top 50 thanks to the Aon Next 10 and Aon Swing 5 .

According to the metrics from this season:

  • Players in the top 50 of the prior season’s FedExCup have participated in an average of five Full-Field events, with the strength of field for Full-Field events (as measured by top 50 and top 125 participation) seeing an increase of 35 percent, YOY.
  • In addition to the top 50 players eligible for each Signature Event, 65 unique players have accessed one Signature Event this season (projections estimated 70).
  • 51-70 Prior Season FEC = 20 players
  • 71-125 Prior Season FEC = 17 players
  • Other = 28 players
  • Top 50 retention rate through the U.S. Open is 64 percent – 18 new players moving into the top 50 – which meets projections for the season of 64 percent.
  • Top 125 retention rate is 74 percent, or 32 new players moving into the top 125 (the historical average under the old points model was 74 percent).
  • No significant changes from historical values for the points needed to make the top 70, with current projections of 578 (lower), 627 (average) and 724 (upper). For comparison, it took 617 points to qualify for the FedExCup Playoffs last season as a top 70.

Tiger Woods PGA Tour Golf Games

Everyone is stuck inside at the moment so now is the time to dust off the old Playstation, Xbox or computer and get the Tiger Woods PGA Tour games back into your staying inside rotation.

The series of immensely successful games began in 1990 and was simply called PGA Tour Golf. Several editions were made over the next few years and then the decision was made to put Tiger Woods on the cover for the first time on the 1999 game.

EA Sports reportedly paid $10 million for the rights to use Tiger's name and likeness. As a result the game would then be rebranded to be called Tiger Woods PGA Tour, followed by the year.

Which game did you play the most? Which was your favourite? And should they make a present day version? Let ys know via our social media channels.

Tiger Woods PGA Tour Golf Games

The 1999 game was not released without a hitch as an employee of Electronic Arts snuck a precursor episode of South Park called Jesus vs Santa onto the Playstation disc. This could be watched if the disc was put into a computer and selected ZZDUMMY.DAT with the media player.

The 2000 game received mixed reviews with many complaining about the difficult and inconsistent putting however a number of features proved popular, such as the nine different Tour professionals you could play with or against, the overall graphics, and several different formats. The Course Architect was also a very good feature in which you could construct your own course.

The next year EA Sports introduced a create your own player feature which seemed to go down well but the lack of Tour players and different courses held the game back.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rVIPZ1_oobI

2002 expanded off the back of those criticisms as lots more players were added as well as courses like Pebble Beach, TPC Sawgrass, and Royal Birkdale. The game received excellent reviews which ensured success in later years.

In 2003 little was done by EA Sports in terms of playability, it played pretty much exactly the same as 2002. But they did introduce little tweaks and new elements to really improve the product.

The sound of the game improved massively with improved commentary, more background noise like waves and birds, and also there was more emphasis put on animation from the players.

One of the things I remember most was how the game kind of went out of its way to compliment you and make it an incentive to improve your player with stats like top performances, personal bests, average scores, tour trophies, scenario medals.

tiger woods pga tour new game

2004 was the game I played religiously more than any other. There was a big expansion in the number of courses you could play such as Bay Hill Club and Lodge, St. Andrews Links (Old Course),  Torrey Pines (South Course), TPC at Sawgrass (Stadium Course), TPC at Scottsdale (Stadium Course), Princeville Resort, Kapalua Plantation, Pinehurst #2, Bethpage Black, Spyglass Hill, Poppy Hills, Sahalee Country Club along with several fantasy courses.

The Game Face feature also expanded what you could create in terms of your own player and for the first time you could do a proper PGA Tour season as you enter four-day tournaments.

All the usual courses were on this game but the fantasy courses really took it up a notch with Greek Isles, Emerald Dragon or Paradise Cove.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NaGSpUhlSPg

Also the Legend Pursuit was a brilliant feature - you had to go up against a variety of characters and tour professionals to earn the honour of going up against one of the legends in the game who were Jack Nicklaus, Arnold Palmer, Seve Ballesteros, Ben Hogan and Gary Player. Beat them, and you could then go up against Sunday Tiger Woods.

Another cool new feature was Tiger Proofing which allowed you to redesign courses to make them easier or harder once you unlocked them.

In 2006 the controls were tinkered with, with the right analog stick being the shape stick to allow you to fade or draw the ball in a different way. The caddie feature also came in but once you got good at the game you didn't really listen to them.

Much of the game remained the same in 2007 although there was improvement in the graphics. They introduced Riviera, The National, The K Club, and the Ocean course at Kiawah Island too.

Once again there was little to differentiate this game from the previous years iteration.

The 2009 controls were a lot more forgiving than 2008's and Hank Haney was also added to the game to help coach you.

Tiger Woods PGA Tour Golf Games

The game with Tiger's iconic 2008 US Open celebration on the cover was another I played a lot. The main thing I remember was the expansion in equipment and costumes you could use.

2011 was the first game to feature Tiger alongside another golfer, this time Rory McIlroy .

tiger woods pga tour new game

The one we all had been waiting for as Augusta National was one of the courses you could play on the game.

Chairman at the time Billy Payne said "EA Sports, Tiger Woods and the PGA Tour have developed an extremely successful franchise that responds to one of the popular entertainment choices of kids today. We hope our inclusion will foster an appreciation for the history and traditions of the Masters and inspire the next generation of golfers." All the proceeds went to the Masters Tournament Foundation.

I remember how excited I was by this as I realistically knew I would never play Augusta. To many, this was as close as you were going to get.

tiger woods pga tour new game

EA Sports put the cover to a fan vote in terms of who would go alongside Tiger. The two most popular selections were Rory McIlroy and Rickie Fowler.

It also had a Kinect feature on the Xbox 360 where you could swing and the game would pick it up.

The Collectors edition also had has a Green Jacket presentation ceremony, five additional courses than the standard edition, and Augusta National’s Par 3 course and Tournament Practice Facility.

Tiger Woods PGA Tour 14 game, players can not only take on the stars of today, such as Woods and McIlroy , but also the shining lights of yesteryear.

In a new ‘Legends of the Majors' game mode, players could take on the late Seve Ballesteros, the big three of Jack Nicklaus, Arnold Palmer and Gary Player, as well as American legends Lee Trevino, Ben Hogan, Sam Snead and golf's first international superstar, Bobby Jones.

Players could battle it our with these legends in all four Majors, perhaps taking on Jones in the US Open, Nicklaus in the Masters or Ballesteros in The Open.

This was the last game in the series with Tiger Woods in the name as in 2015 the game became Rory McIlroy PGA Tour 2015.

Rocket Mortgage Classic

Heralded teen Miles Russell, 15, posts a two-over par 74 in his PGA Tour debut

2158907398

Inevitably and perhaps unfairly, Tiger Woods comparisons already have begun for Miles Russell, who at 15 made his PGA Tour debut on Thursday, posting a two-over par 74 in the Rocket Mortgage Classic at Detroit Golf Club.

Russell, the No. 1 junior player in the world, was impressive enough for much of the round, and was even par through 14 holes. However, an errant tee shot on the par-4 sixth hole, his 15th of the day, led to a double-bogey. He followed that up with a birdie four on his 16th hole, and closed with a three-putt bogey.

The leader is Akshay Bhatia, who shot an eight-under 64. Russell is tied for 128th in a field of 156.

“Today was a great day. I mean, for it to be the first, definitely wasn't quite what I was hoping for, but we live, we learn, we move on. So looking forward to tomorrow and hopefully tomorrow's going to be better.

“I was a little nervous [on the first tee], I'd probably give it like a 7. That was probably my best drive of the day. Should have been nervous all day. It was a good day, settled in nicely.”

Before Russell’s tour debut, Raul Pereda, the PGA Tour player with whom he is closest, said, “We’re looking at a young Tiger Woods right here.”

Woods was 16 when he made his PGA Tour debut, at the Nissan Los Angeles Open in 1992. He had rounds of 72 and 75 and missed the cut by six strokes. “I learned that I’m not that good,” Woods said of his inaugural PGA Tour appearance.

In April, Russell, playing in the Korn Ferry Tour’s LECOM Suncoast Classic outside Sarasota, Fla., became the youngest to make a KFT cut and tied for 20th.

Late next month, Russell will be playing in the U.S. Junior Amateur Championship at Oakland Hills, as will Woods’ son Charlie, also 15. Tiger Woods was 15 when he won the first of three straight Junior Amateurs.

No doubt the comparisons will continue, and Russell obviously has talent and potential. Both were on display in small quantities on Thursday on a stage with which he was unfamiliar. It’s a start.

PGA Tour creates sponsor exemption for Tiger Woods, cites 'exceptional lifetime achievement'

Tiger Woods expresses his frustration about his poor performance at Pinehurst and casts doubt on his future participation at the U.S. Open. (0:32)

The PGA Tour has created a special sponsor exemption for 15-time major champion Tiger Woods -- and Woods alone -- based on his "exceptional lifetime achievement," the tour told its members in a memo Tuesday night.

The sponsor exemption would be available for Woods to compete in the eight signature events, which feature limited fields, increased prize money and FedEx Cup points.

Woods, an 82-time winner on the PGA Tour, wouldn't otherwise qualify for the signature events with $20 million purses because he isn't playing enough competitive golf after returning to the tour from serious injuries suffered in a car wreck in February 2021.

The PGA Tour policy board approved the special sponsor exemption during a joint meeting with the PGA Tour Enterprises board of directors on Tuesday in Hartford, Connecticut.

In the memo, a copy of which was obtained by ESPN, the tour told its members, "An additional sponsor exemption will be created to recognize Tiger Woods in his own category as a player who has reached an exceptional lifetime achievement threshold of 80+ career wins."

This season, the eight signature events were The Sentry, AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am, Genesis Invitational, Arnold Palmer Invitational, RBC Heritage, Wells Fargo Championship, Memorial Tournament and the Travelers Championship.

In the memo, PGA Tour commissioner Jay Monahan said the policy board was considering implementing a 36-hole cut in each of the signature events -- only the Genesis Invitational, Arnold Palmer Invitational and the Memorial currently do. The board took no action and will continue discussing the topic.

The tour said it would also develop an alternate list that would ensure that each of the signature events had a field of 72 players. The Travelers Championship has only 71 players after Rory McIroy withdrew Monday .

Woods, 48, has competed in only nine official PGA Tour events the past three seasons since returning to action at the 2022 Masters. The only non-major event he has competed in is the Genesis Invitational at Riviera Country Club outside Los Angeles, which he hosts and benefits his foundation.

Woods withdrew from the second round of the Genesis Invitational in February because of illness. He finished 60th at the Masters and missed the cut at the PGA Championship and last week's U.S. Open .

Woods said he planned to compete in next month's Open Championship, scheduled for July 18-21 at Royal Troon Golf Course in Scotland.

When Woods was asked at the U.S. Open at Pinehurst No. 2 on Friday if playing in more events might help him perform better in the majors, he didn't seem ready to play additional tournaments.

"I've only got one more tournament this season," Woods said. "Even if I win the British Open, I don't think I'll be in the [FedEx Cup] playoffs. Just one more event and then I'll come back whenever I come back."

In the memo, Monahan also gave members an update on the tour's negotiations with Saudi Arabia's Public Investment Fund, which is considering a sizable investment in PGA Tour Enterprises. The PIF has funded the rival LIV Golf League the past three years.

Woods and other members of a transaction subcommittee met with PIF governor Yasir Al-Rumayyan and others in New York on June 7.

"As we've said in the past -- we can't negotiate in public -- but we are making progress," Monahan told the policy board, according to the memo. "Two weeks ago, members of our PGA Tour Enterprises transaction subcommittee met in New York with Yasir Al-Rumayyan, the Governor of the PIF, as well as members of his team. During that meeting, we reached consensus on several items, but both parties recognize that there is still work to do to reach a final agreement.

"Our talks are ongoing, with the goal of developing a shared vision for the future of professional golf that is pro-competitive and provides players with the best global opportunities."

2024 Travelers Championship leaderboard: Scottie Scheffler first since Tiger Woods to win six events in season

Scheffler continues cleaning up at signature events while becoming the fourth golfer since 1983 to win six or more tournaments in one season.

It appears as if last week's U.S. Open was the exception and not the rule as it relates to Scottie Scheffler's level of play this year. The No. 1 golfer in the world had won five of his eight prior events before nearly missing the cut last week at Pinehurst No. 2, ultimately placing T41 for his worst finish since the fall of 2022. Scheffler has immediately rebounded by winning a sixth tournament across his last 10 starts on Sunday at the 2024 Travelers Championship.

The fourth round itself was mostly straightforward for Scheffler ... until the end. His card was clean with five birdies and no bogeys, another 65 in a season full of them. He finished at 22 under, one off of Keegan Bradley's scoring record of 23 under from a year ago. But a disruption on the 72nd hole in the form of protesters -- just before Scheffler lined up a potential tournament-winning birdie putt -- briefly threw the event into chaos.

The scene was cleared quickly, though Scheffler's ensuing putt settled just inches from the hole. That allowed 18-, 36- and 54-hole leader Tom Kim to drain a birdie on the last hole of regulation, forcing a playoff. PGA Tour officials cut a new the hole location amid debris left over from the protestors, and the golfers returned to the 18th to begin the sudden death playoff.

Scheffler took care of business in short order with a par, but Kim's approach landed in a bunker and ultimately led to a bogey.

Over the last 19 holes at TPC River Highlands, Scottie Scheffler did what Scottie Scheffler does. He made good decisions and finished second in the field from tee to green. He let everyone around him fall by the wayside until he was the only one left standing in the end. This is not always how it goes -- sometimes Kim will make birdie in the playoff instead of bogey -- but this is basically how it's gone for most of 2024 for Scheffler.

This week's win for Scheffler was historic. All of them are at this point in his season. Since 1983, only three other golfers have won six times in a year. With two months left in the season and around five events remaining on his expected schedule, Scheffler has a chance to move even further up that list.

Impressively, all of Scheffler's victories in 2024 have come at big-time events. Of the 13 best field in golf this year, according to the Official World Golf Rankings, Scheffler has won six of them (46%).

The six wins: Four signature events, a major championship (the Masters) and The Players Championship. The six winner's checks have Scheffler earning nearly $28 million for the year , $7 million more than he picked up a year ago when he previously set the all-time record for money earned in a single season.

The craziest realization (and best compliment) about Scottie is that this has become rote. Another week, another Scheffler win. Yawn. That has become a bit of the disposition of golf fans toward what is happening. The numbers belie the routine nature of what he is doing though because the numbers tell the following story: This simply never happens.

It's happening this year, though, and Scheffler is architecting one of the great seasons in PGA Tour history with a chance at a second major championship in just under a month and another Tiger-laden step up the historic ladder.  Grade: A+

Here are the rest of our grades for the 2024 Travelers Championship.

2. Tom Kim (-22): It was a tough weekend for Kim, who led this tournament for so long before losing to his birthday buddy and friend, Scheffler, in that playoff. Still, this was Kim's best event of the year by far. He nearly accomplished what nobody else has seemed capable of accomplishing by pulling back even with Scheffler on the 72nd hole and sending the event to a playoff. He now has some confidence built for the summer as he heads to the Open Championship looking to improve upon his T2 finish a year ago. Kim is playing his best golf, and for the last month, he has been the iron player everyone thought he could become a few years ago when he first got going on the PGA Tour. I am broadly neutral on his long-term outlook but impressed by his last several starts. The ceiling is not as high as some might think, but the floor could certainly be higher than I believed. Grade: A+

T3. Tom Hoge, Sungjae Im (-19)

T5. Akshay Bhatia (-18): Bhatia has the look, the charisma and the ball striking ability of a future superstar. It's easy to forget with players like him and Im, who have been on tour since they were teenagers, they are still in their early 20s with decades to go. But Bhatia is four years younger than Viktor Hovland right now. He's making a real leap this year as a player, and he has the numbers to prove it. He's gone from basically being an average (or strokes gained 0.0) PGA Tour player to gaining 1.0 strokes per round on average PGA Tour fields. In other words, that is basically the difference between Martin Laird and Shane Lowry. A big win could be on deck for him.  Grade: A

T9. Cameron Young (-17):  For a while, it looked like 59-59 was in play for Young. As it was, he still took a look at the all time weekend scoring record of 122 set by Ludvig Aberg at the RSM Classic in a win last fall. Young eventually settled at 125 shots for the weekend. He's had an up and down year to date with some moments of good but a lot of bad in between. For example: He has three top fives worldwide this year but no top 20s since the Masters. This is a good jump start for him going into the summer as he tries to contend, like he did the last two years, at the Open Championship. Grade: A

T27. Ludvig Aberg (-11): The finish was not there, but a week after contending for the U.S. Open, Aberg finished 5th in a field of the best hitters in the world in strokes gained tee to green. He seems to be getting more consistently better as his second year progresses, and it does feel like a monstrous victory is on deck. Grade: B

Scottie gets No. 6 and another signature event trophy. Kyle Porter and Greg DuCharme recap the 2024 Travelers Championship. Follow & listen to The First Cut on  Apple Podcasts  and  Spotify .

Scottie wins it with a par at the first playoff hole!

Kim has 36 feet for par after getting out of the front bunker. If he doesn't make it, this tournament is over.

Kim is in a horrible position on his second shot with a fried egg in the front bunker. Scheffler has what looks like 10-15 feet for birdie and a probable win.

capture-2024-06-23-154035.png

Kim and Scheffler in good shape off the tee

Both players hit good tee shots off the 18th tee and should be in good position for a look at making birdie and winning the tournament on the 18th hole.

Travelers Championship playoff rules

Sudden death starting on the 18th hole. If they're still tied, they'll head back to the 18th hole and play it again. After that, it's No. 17 and then 18 again after that.

They are cutting a new hole on No. 18.

capture-2024-06-23-152731.png

It sounds like they might be cutting a new hole for the Travelers playoff between Scottie and Tom Kim, which is wild and not something I've ever heard of a tournament doing. The reason? Protesters throwing smoke bombs onto the green at the 18th hole of regulation.

Tom Kim forces playoff

Wow, Tom Kim just got up and down from the 18th fairway to force a playoff with Scottie Scheffler at the Travelers Championship. Absolutely incredible clutch shot.

Tgl indoor golf league’s first founding partner has tie to tiger woods.

An exterior rendering of the SoFi Center, the indoor venue that will host the high-tech, prime time ... [+] TGL golf league.

TGL, the high-tech, prime time golf league backed by Tiger Woods and Rory McIlroy’s TMRW Sports that begins play early next year, has its first Founding Partner. And it’s a company that’s prominently involved in the world of traditional golf: Genesis.

Not only does the multiyear partnership position Genesis as the official automobile company of TGL, it provides a different platform within professional golf to showcase how the both the company and new league are marrying design, technology and innovation. While financial terms weren’t disclosed, TGL is expected to have a handful of Founding Partner deals in the neighborhood of $5 million to $8 million annually for category exclusivity.

Genesis and Woods already have an existing relationship, with Woods and his TGR Foundation as the host of the PGA Tour’s Genesis Invitational at Riviera Country Club. Genesis also sponsors the Genesis Scottish Open and is involved with the Presidents Cup and DP World Tour, as well as the KPGA Tour’s co-sanctioned Genesis Championship in South Korea. TGL’s unique blend of golf, media and entertainment had considerable appeal for the company, said Genesis Global Head Mike Song.

“We’re eager for the launch of TGL this January and bringing Genesis’ audacious and distinctly Korean brand DNA to a whole new generation of golfers and golf fans through this exciting new team golf platform,” Song said.

Best 5% interest savings accounts of 2024.

TGL is an indoor league, played within a custom-built arena in South Florida — the SoFi Center — that has 1,500 seats and features both “Greenplay” and “Screenplay.” The former will involve PGA Tour pros playing shots within a 40-yard-wide short game complex, while the latter will see players hitting into an IMAX-sized screen that’s 20 times larger than a standard golf simulator.

Simulated golf is big business in South Korea, where more rounds are played indoors than outdoors and a golf simulator company like Golfzon has more than 5,500 locations.

While the prevalence of high-tech, indoor simulators in the South Korean golf market provides a strong foundation for Genesis to expand its support within the industry, the key driver for the TGL partnership is broader, said Genesis Brand Marketing Officer Chulmin Lee.

“Since our brand’s inception, Genesis has been committed to the game as a way of telling our stories and engaging more meaningfully with players, caddies, and fans,” said Lee. “By integrating our innovative approaches and luxury brand experience, we wanted to be a part of TGL’s unique and engaging golf experience that resonates deeply with audiences around the world — allowing us to reach an already tech-savvy and enthusiastic viewer base.”

As a Founding Partner, Genesis will be featured prominently in commercials on ESPN and ESPN+ when the league debuts in January 2025, with the first team matches played on Tuesday nights during the NFL playoffs and the new 12-team college football playoff. TGL had been scheduled to begin play in January of this year but pushed back a year after the original venue’s air-supported dome on the campus of Palm Beach State College deflated and was damaged following a power failure.

TGL has other prominent international media partners as well, among them JTBC/Phoenix Sports International in South Korea.

Genesis will also be involved in on-site activations at the SoFi Center and have in-venue LED signage, with a sponsorship presence not unlike that seen in NBA and NHL arenas. Founding Partners will additionally be a part of a hospitality and suite program within the SoFi Center, allowing them to tie in high-end golf getaways in the golf-rich Palm Beach market or simply allow clients in colder weather regions to escape to South Florida during the peak season of January through March.

“The Genesis brand aligns perfectly with TGL through their commitment to designing exceptional and innovative products, and their demonstrated commitment to golf all around the world,” said Mike McCarley, the CEO and founder of TMRW Sports and TGL. “We value their focus on providing unique, world-class experiences to consumers. We look forward to working with Genesis to promote TGL and its teams to a global fan base in new and engaging ways.”

The Founding Partner announcement comes amid a flurry of activity for the new league, which recently completed a Series A investment in TMRW Sports, added several new limited partners including singer-songwriter Niall Horan (Boston Common Golf) and television producer and screenwriter Shonda Rhimes (Los Angeles Golf Club), and filled out its player rosters with the final addition of Hideki Matsuyama.

Each of the six inaugural teams are comprised of four PGA Tour players, with three competing in each match. Woods’ team, for example – Jupiter Jupiter Links Golf Club – also features Max Homa, Tom Kim and Kevin Kisner. McIlroy’s Boston Common team, meanwhile, also includes Keegan Bradley, Adam Scott and Matsuyama.

PGA Tour Honors The Greatness Of Tiger Woods With New Rule Giving Him Lifetime Exemption To Certain Events

T here isn’t a single golfer alive today who’s had a greater impact on the game than Tiger Woods, and the PGA Tour is honoring his legendary status with a new measure that ensures he’ll have a spot reserved for him in certain tournaments for the rest of his life.

It’s safe to assume Tiger Woods wants to secure one more win on the PGA Tour when you consider he’s currently tied with Sam Snead for the most victories of all time with 82. He’s certainly facing an uphill battle in his quest for another based on the health issues that continue to hamper his game, but history has taught us you should never count him out.

The organization is forever indebted to a man who turned the golf world on its head after he joined it in 1996, and while it’s literally repaid him (and other influential golfers) with the help of the Player Impact Program that was introduced in 2021, it’s now gone out of its way to introduce a new rule that was essentially created just for him.

According to ESPN , the PGA Tour policy board approved a measure that went up for a vote on Monday giving any golfer with 80 victories on the circuit a lifetime exemption to its eight signature events, which feature a more competitive field along with a higher purse and more FedEx Cup points up for grabs.

If you’re curious, Woods and Snead are the only players in PGA Tour history to surpass the 80-victory threshold (Jack Nicklaus is in third place on the all-time list with 73). To put that in perspective, Rory McIlroy is currently the wins leader among active golfers not named “Tiger Woods” with a grand total of…26.

We’ll have to wait and see if Woods decides to take advantage of those exemptions based on the fairly minimal workload he’s shouldered as he continues to deal with the lingering effects of the car accident he was involved in a few years ago, but this is nonetheless a very well-earned honor.
