Tour de France 2024: TV and streaming, schedule, stages, route, and what to watch for

Cycling’s premier event is about to get underway.

And it will look a little different than in year’s past.

The 2024 Tour de France, the 111th in history, begins on Saturday June 29. However, the starting point for this year’s Tour de France, as well as the finish line, will mark a series of firsts for the event.

To mark 100 years since Ottavio Bottecchia became the first Italian rider to win the Tour de France, this year’s race will begin in Italy, with riders setting off in Florence. The first three stages of this year’s Tour de France will keep riders in Italy, before the Tour’s fourth stage sees riders make the journey from Pinerolo in Italy, to Valloire in France.

In addition, this year’s Tour de France schedule coincides with the 2024 Paris Summer Games, which begin in Paris at the end of July. As such the Tour de France will conclude in Nice, with the final stage of the 2024 Tour de France bringing riders from Monaco to Nice.

This year’s Tour de France also concludes with an individual time trial, the first time the event has concluded with an ITT since 1989. That year saw the legendary duel on the final day between Greg LeMond and Laurent Fignon.

This year’s event has no shortage of storylines, starting with the battle between Dane Jonas Vingegaard, riding for Visma—Lease a Bike, and Slovenian Tadej Pogačar of UAE Team Emirates.

Vingegaard is the reigning Tour de France champion, winning in both 2022 and 2023 ahead of his rival Pogačar. But his status for this year’s Tour de France is a huge question mark, as Vingegaard endured a horrific crash at the Tour of Basque Country in April. The Danish cyclist suffered a broken collarbone, several broken ribs, a pulmonary contusion and a pneumothorax as a result of the crash, and spent 12 days in the hospital.

Vingegaard’s questionable form has opened the door for Pogačar to perhaps claim another title. The Slovenian took home the prestigious yellow jersey, the maillot jaune, in both 2020 and 2021; his victory in 2020 at the age of 21 made him the second-youngest winner in race history.

The two are the odds-on favorites to compete for the top spot on the podium again in 2024, but Vingegaard’s recent crash has made his rival the favorite.

Beyond the two favorites, there are some other riders in the field who could challenge for the yellow jersey. Primož Roglič from Slovenia, riding for Red Bull-Bora-hansgrohe, is one of the older riders in the field but might have some unfinished business after losing out to fellow Slovenian Pogačar in 2020. Roglič failed to finish in both 2021 and 2022, but won the Critérium du Dauphiné at the start of the month, fending off a late challenge from Matteo Jorgenson from Visma—Lease a Bike.

Remco Evenepoel from Soudal Quick-Step is another rider to watch. The Belgian cyclist suffered a crash of his own at Basque Country, but seemed back in form during the Critérium du Dauphiné when he was part of the chasing pack that put Roglič under pressure in the final stage. Considered one of the sport’s premier time trialists, the schedule sets up well for him with the 2024 Tour de France containing a pair of time trials, including the one on the final day previously mentioned.

For American fans Jorgenson represents your best hope for Tour de France glory. However, his role this year might best be described as “undetermined,” given Vingegaard’s questionable form. Should Vingegaard be healthy Jorgenson may serve as an auxiliary leader for Visma, and one of the sport’s premier domestiques. But if Vingegaard struggles with his health as a result of his recent crash, the 24-year-old could be thrust into a major role. And given his recent performance — including finishing just eight seconds behind Roglič at Dauphiné — he is certainly worth keeping an eye on.

The 2024 Tour de France map

Here is the official map of the 2024 Tour de France:

You can also view the map on the official Tour de France website.

Stages, dates, and distances for the 2024 Tour de France

Here are the stages for the 2024 Tour de France. According to the official website there are eight stages classified as flat, four stages classified as hilly, seven mountain stages (including four summit finishes: Saint-Lary-Soulan Pla d’Adet in Stage 14, Plateau de Beille in Stage 15, Isola 2000 in Stage 19, and Col de la Couillole in Stage 20). There are also two individual time trials, along with a pair of rest days.

Overall, the 2024 Tour e France route covers 3,498 kilometers (2,174 miles) and contains 52,230 meters (171,358 feet) of total vertical climb.

If riders were hoping to ease into the 2024 Tour de France, they have another thing coming. The opening stage of this year’s Tour not only marks the first time the race has started in Italy, but it might be the toughest opening stage in history, featuring 3,600 meters (11,811 feet) of climbing. The final climb into San Marino, featuring over seven kilometers (4.35 miles) of climb at nearly five degrees.

The two toughest stretches are likely Stages 14 and 15, as well as Stages 19 and 20. Not only are all four stages mountain stages — meaning riders will have to conquer the mountains on back-to-back days — but all four stages contain a summit finish: Saint-Lary-Soulan Pla d’Adet in Stage 14, Plateau de Beille in Stage 15, Isola 2000 in Stage 19, and Col de la Couillole in Stage 20.

Stage 9 is a very intriguing stage. While it is classified as “hilly” Stage 9, which sees riders start and finish in Troyes, it also contains 14 “white road” sectors. White roads on the Tour de France are dusty, gravel roads that have been a feature of this event.

In addition, the 2024 Tour de France concludes with an Individual Time Trial, the second ITT of this year’s race and the first time the Tour de France will finish in such fashion since the legendary LeMond-Fignon duel in 1989.

2024 Tour de France results

Stage 1: Florence to Rimini

Stage Winner: Romain Bardet, Team dsm-firmenich PostNL

Overall Leader: Romain Bardet, Team dsm-firmenich PostNL

Romain Bardet, aided in large part by his Team dsm-firmenich PostNL teammate Frank Van den Broek, captured the difficult first stage of the 2024 Tour de France on Saturday. For Bardet, who is competing in his final Tour de France after announcing his upcoming retirement following next year’s Critérium du Dauphiné before a switch to gravel. This stage win was his first in seven years, and he’s the first Frenchman to don the famous yellow jersey since Julian Alaphilippe in the 2021 race.

The two-time Grammy winner has earned the nickname of “The Soundtrack King” thanks to his indelible contributions to films such as Caddyshack, Footloose, and Top Gun (and now the new blockbuster Top Gun: Maverick).

“It’s been an amazing journey since starting with Jimmy Messina in 1971, and I’m fortunate to have had such a long touring career,” Loggins says. “I don’t see this as the end of my professional career, but certainly a halt to the grind of major touring.” He stresses that there was no overarching reason to say farewell to touring, other than “after spending a lifetime on the road, I want to have more time at home.”

Along with his own solo work, Loggins has an incredible body of work that includes his hits with Jim Messina – including “Danny’s Song,” “House at Pooh Corner,” “Love Song” and “Your Mama Don’t Dance” – as well as his smash duet with Stevie Nicks, “Whenever I Call You Friend” and the rock radio favorite, “Don’t Fight It,” on which he teamed up with Steve Perry.

As for possible guests on the “This Is It” tour, Loggins hints that fans can expect some surprises. “We’ve been talking about it,” he says. “We’re hoping to have some of my longtime friends sit in whenever possible.”

Here's what Michael Jackson planned for final 'This Is It' tour that never happened

"He wanted to make sure that there were really important moments."

Michael Jackson at a press conference in 1996

Before Michael Jackson suddenly passed away back in 2009, he was due to play a massive string of shows in London as part of his This Is It tour.

While we never got to see how the shows turned out – except in rehearsal form as part of the Michael Jackson's This Is It documentary – the tour's choreographer has opened up about what plans they did have.

Kenny Ortega, Michael Jackson This Is It, Good Morning Britain

"From the very, very start, when Michael called me, he said to me, 'Kenny, this is it'. He said 'this is it' so many times that I went back to him and said, 'Why don't we just call the tour This Is It?'

"But he had given me reasons, and he really wanted to do a tour so that his children could have an opportunity to see him in action, and to see him doing what he's loved all his life.

Ortega also revealed that Jackson wanted to do the tour for his "loyal" fans, as well as using the stage as a "platform to remind the world" of the "vulnerability of the planet".

Kenny Ortega, Michael Jackson This Is It, Good Morning Britain

"So Michael really had a vision for this tour, and every part of it played into those three reasons," Ortega continued.

"He wanted a likefulness to it, and he wanted to make sure that there were really important moments that were reminding his audiences to step out there and to take a responsibility, to do their part to make sure that we have a world that we recognise in the future."

Jackson passed away on June 25, 2009, and his daughter Paris recently shared a poignant tribute on what would have been her dad's 59th birthday.

"You are always with me and I am always with you," she wrote. "Though I am not you, and you are not me, I know with all of my being that we are one. And our souls will never change in that way. Thank you for the magic, forever and always."

The annual long-distance race will bring together some of the biggest names in cycling, including two-time defending champion Jonas Vingegaard, Tadej Pogačar, Primož Roglič, Remco Evenepoel, Juan Ayuso, Carlos Rodríguez, Adam Yates, João Almeida and Matteo Jorgenson. The Tour De France will cover 2,170 miles across 21 days of racing, finishing in Nice on July 21. This year's Tour will be the first ever to not finish in Paris (due to the 2024 Olympics).

Want to tune into the 2024 Tour de France (AKA the cycling Super Bowl)? Here's everything you need to know about the cycling event, including the odds of who will take home the yellow jersey in 2024, where to stream the 2024 Tour de France and more.

How to watch the Tour de France from the US:

Stream the tour de france.

Tour de France dates: June 29 - July 21

Tour de France TV channel: NBC

Tour de France streaming: Peacock

How to watch the 2024 Tour de France without cable:

Starting at just $6 a month, a Peacock subscription is the easiest way to stream live sports and events airing on NBC, including this year’s Tour de France! On top of access to the Tour de France, the streaming platform is the home of the 2024 Olympics, and the easiest way to stream most live sports and events airing on NBC. You’ll also get access to thousands of hours of shows and movies, including beloved sitcoms such as Parks and Recreation and The Office . For $12 monthly you can upgrade to an ad-free subscription which includes live access to your local NBC affiliate (not just during designated sports and events) and the ability to download select titles to watch offline.

Is there a free Tour de France livestream?

Don’t want to pay for Peacock to watch the Tour de France? UK-based streaming platform ITVX will have a free livestream of their Tour de France coverage throughout the race. To access this free livestream though, you’ll need a VPN.

A VPN (virtual private network) helps protect your data, can mask your IP address and is perhaps most popular for being especially useful in the age of streaming. Whether you’re looking to watch Friends on Netflix (which left the U.S. version of the streamer back in 2019) or tune in to a boxing match this weekend without paying the PPV prices, a VPN can help you out. Looking to try a VPN for the first time? This guide breaks down the best VPN options for every kind of user .

This Is It Tour

This Is It Michael Jackson banner

This Is It Banner

This Is It was a planned residency show of fifty concerts by Michael Jackson to be held at The O2 Arena in London. They were scheduled to begin in July 2009 and continue through to March 2010. However, with all concerts sold out, Jackson suffered a cardiac arrest and died due to an overdose of propofol and benzodiazepine drugs, less than three weeks/18 days before the first concert kicked off. Jackson officially announced the concerts at a press conference held inside The O2 Arena stated that This Is It was going to be his final series of concerts. AEG Live, the concert promoters, released a promotional video that took up an entire commercial break, setting a record for ITV. The shows were to be Jackson's first major series of concerts since the HIStory World Tour finished in 1997, and had been cited as one of the year's most important musical events. Randy Phillips, president and chief executive of AEG Live, stated that the first 10 dates alone would have earned the singer approximately £50 million.

Originally only 10 concerts were announced, but the tickets were sold out in less than an hour and the public demand for tickets resulted in 40 more concerts being added, making 50 in total. Ticket sales broke several records and AEG Live stated that Jackson could have sold more dates. Jackson's album sales increased following the announcement. In preparation for the concert series, the pop singer had been collaborating with numerous high profile figures, such as fashion designer Christian Audigier, choreographer Kenny Ortega and bodybuilder Lou Ferrigno. Prior to Jackson's death, Allgood Entertainment sued the entertainer for $40 million, claiming that he had breached an exclusivity agreement with them by agreeing to the This Is It concerts. The case was later dismissed.

In light of Jackson's death, AEG Live offered either full refunds to all ticket holders or a special souvenir ticket designed by the entertainer. The cancelled shows, the record-breaking ticket sales and the potential for a world tour, made Jackson's shows "the greatest concert[s] that never happened. Columbia Pictures acquired the footage of the show rehearsals and made a concert film titled Michael Jackson's This Is It. The Jackson estate received 90% of the profit made while the remaining 10% went to AEG Live. Columbia Pictures guaranteed at least $60 million for the rights. To coincide with the release of the concert footage, an accompanying album was released.

Promotion and significance [ ]

The announcement of Jackson's first 10 performances was made by the singer himself, during a press conference at The O2 Arena on March 5, 2009. As many as 7,000 fans and 350 reporters awaited the singer's arrival, many donning Jackson-related clothing. The singer commented at the conference, "I just wanted to say that these will be my final show performances in London. When I say this is it, it really means this is it", adding that it was his "final curtain call", although he may have just been referring to performing in London. Organizers touted the residency as, "dramatic shows [that] promise an explosive return with a band of the highest calibre, a state-of-the-art stage show and incredible surprise support acts". Hours before the press conference, promotional posters for the residency were displayed around London. Further promotion took up an entire commercial break period on ITV London during Dancing on Ice, the first time this has ever happened for a musical artist. The advert, which cost £1 million to air, was viewed by 11 million people.

The shows, Jackson's first significant concert events since the HIStory World Tour in 1997, had been cited as one of the year's most important musical events, and as the greatest comeback in the history of pop. Randy Phillips, president and chief executive of AEG Live, stated that the first 10 dates would earn the singer approximately £50 million (about US$80.1 million). The Guardian characterized the announced 10 concerts as an "astonishing comeback for a man who in recent years has been dogged by controversy", adding that the entertainer still had "enormous commercial clout". The Evening Standard stated that the deal was the "showbiz coup of the decade" for AEG Live, while The Independent remarked that the finalized 50 concerts would provide London with a "much-needed" economic boost. Joe Cohen, chief executive of Seatwave, told BBC 6 Music that the shows would generate £1 billion for the economy.

Public interest [ ]

Some websites offered early tickets, which the Association of Secondary Ticket Agents warned were fake. "We are warning people not to buy tickets that are not yet on sale because it is unlikely that they will receive those tickets", announced the organization's chief, Graham Burns. He concluded, "It's impossible when the dates haven't been announced to be selling tickets for something when there are no announced dates". Jackson's official website allowed fans to register early for a "pre-sale" draw. Some fans had difficulty applying, as the website could not deal with the large number of registrations—reportedly up to 16,000 applications a second. In the space of 24 hours, nearly a million people from around the world registered for pre-sale tickets, enough to fill the venue 50 times over.Tickets that had not even been printed were selling on auction website eBay for £300. Sales of Jackson's albums increased following the press conference. Overnight, sales of Off the Wall (Album) rose 200%, Bad (Album) rose 110%, Dangerous(Album) rose 165% and Thriller 25 rose 155%

The two-day pre-sale began on March 11, and 40 extra dates were added to meet high demand—five of these dates were reserved in their entirety for the public sale. More than 1.5  million fans caused two sites offering pre-sale tickets to crash within minutes of going online. In the space of two hours, 190,000 tickets were sold. Two million people tried to buy pre-sale tickets in the space of 18 hours. Veronica Schmidt of The Times stated of the reception, "Michael Jackson has floored his critics", while organizers proclaimed it a "cultural phenomenon". It was announced that Jackson would break the record for number of shows performed by an artist at a single venue, which had been set by Prince, who hosted a residency at the same arena for his 21 Nights in London concerts. According to Jackson's website, the following records were or would have been broken: "The biggest audience ever to see an artist in one city", "The most amount of people to attend a series of arena shows", "The fastest ticket sales in history". Randy Phillips acknowledged that Jackson could have sold out even more dates, but this would have conflicted with other career plans that the singer had. On March 13, the other 50% of seats for dates 1–45 and all the seats for dates 46–50 went on sale to the general public. Within a few hours, all 50 dates had sold out. At this stage, the sales of King of Pop were up 400% and the sales of Thriller were up 200%. Tickets appeared on eBay for as much as £10,000.

Preparation and concert details [ ]

The 50-concert run was originally scheduled to start on July 8, 2009 and conclude on February 24, 2010. Each of the shows would have been performed at The O2 Arena in London, which has a capacity of 23,000. New York-based fashion designer Zaldy served as head costumer, creating ten of Jackson's stage looks while the other six were created by his longtime costumers, Michael Bush and Dennis Tompkins. Jay Ruckel from La Crasia Gloves recreated Jackson's iconic single glove for the concerts. The costumes he was to wear during the shows were encrusted with 300,000 Swarovski crystals.[40] In May 2009, thousands of dancers flew in from all around the world to audition for Jackson, who helped select the 11 finalists in person. Kenny Ortega, who had collaborated with Jackson previously, was to work on the overall design and direction of concerts. Ortega said that the final product would have been a "theatrical musical experience". According to Randy Philips, £13 million was to be spent on producing the concerts, which would have included 18–22 songs and 22 different sets. There also would have been aerial dancing similar to routines by Cirque du Soleil . Carla Ferrigno told Reuters that her husband Lou had been helping Jackson train in advance of the shows. Jackson and Ferrigno had previously worked together.

On May 20, it was announced that the first concert would be pushed back five days to July 13 and three other July dates would be rescheduled for March 2010. AEG Live said that the delay was necessary because more time was needed for dress rehearsals. The revised schedule called for 27 shows between July 13 and September 29, 2009, followed by a three-month break, before resuming in the new year with 23 more shows between January 7 and March 6, 2010. Some fans petitioned for the reversal of AEG Live's decision. In late June, several hundred seats for each of the dates were put on sale. These seats were held back until production logistics were worked out.

It was suggested that after the London concerts, Jackson might head to Australia, Europe, India, China, Hong Kong and Japan before moving on to North America. Randy Phillips, the CEO of AEG Live, told The LA Times that Australia was part of Michael Jackson's international tour plans.

According to Jermaine Jackson 's 2011 book You Are Not Alone: Michael Through a Brother's Eyes , after the London O2 concerts finished, Jackson was planning to arrange two more tours with AEG Live as well as a new halftime show performance during one of the future Super Bowl games to overshadow his own legendary halftime show performance at the Super Bowl XXVII in 1993 and a final reunion with his brothers as The Jackson 5 to give their mother a chance to see her sons perform live together before she passed away. Afterwards, he planned to perform one last tour and officially retire from musical entertainment, planning to move ahead to possibly directing his own film ideas, such as making a feature-length based on his 1982 song Thriller and the music video of the same name.

In Conrad Murray 's manslaughter trial, David Walgren stated another one of Jackson's future plans was to open a children's hospital. This was heard in an audio tape Conrad Murray played of Jackson under the influence of propofol on May 10, 2009, one month before Jackson died. His voice is barely recognisable in the recording, but he can be clearly heard saying that he wanted to build the greatest children's hospital in the world and name it after himself: The Michael Jackson's Children's Hospital. Walgren also stated that while the tour was happening, Jackson wanted to buy an estate with streams, horses and animals so his three children, Prince, Paris and Blanket could live normal lives as their father performed the concerts, as he was photographed looking for a house in the United Kingdom with his children. Walgren also said that the tour would begin that summer, and Jackson could take his children out of school and bring them with him so they could see him perform in London.

Michael Jackson’s “This Is It!” Tour Balloons to 50-Show Run Stretching Into 2010

  • By Daniel Kreps

Daniel Kreps

What began as a 10-night stand at London’s O2 Arena has exploded into a 50- concert affair as Michael Jackson added another 20 shows to his This Is It ! run. All the tickets allotted during yesterday’s presale, roughly 360,000 of them according to MichaelJacksonLive , sold out yesterday, and the tickets that go on sale to the public tomorrow will likely do the same. As it stands, the 2009 concerts will end on September 29th, and then Jackson will return to the O2 on January 7, 2010 for at least 15 more shows, bringing the grand total to 50.

“By the end of the 50 concerts, 1 million fans will have witnessed one of the greatest musical events in history,” reads a statement on the MichaelJacksonLive page. “The figures speak for themselves — 360,000 tickets sold in 18 hours during the pre sale so far, that is 20,000 tickets per hour, 33 tickets per minute!” Demand was so great for the Jackson shows, Ticketmaster was struck with technical problems due to the high traffic . Among the records This Is It! has broken: The biggest audience ever to see an artist in one city, the most amount of people to attend a series of arena shows and fastest ticket sales in history. Barring an unlikely non-sell out to any of the shows, the 50 shows will more than double Prince’s previous record of 21 sold-out concerts at the O2 Arena.

“Michael is said to be ‘thrilled’ by the response and wanted as many fans to share the experience with him as possible,” the Website adds. “This will be the last chance to see the King of Pop in London, this really is it!” The remaining tickets go on sale tomorrow, March 13th, at 7 am GST/3 am EST. Check out the tour dates as they stand now below:

Michael Jackson: His Life In Photos

Documents displayed for a jury Wednesday showed the promoter of Michael Jackson’s ill-fated comeback concerts had contemplated a worldwide tour for the entertainer in the year before his death.

The documents prepared by AEG Live LLC envisioned 186 shows, with Jackson earning $132 million for his performances – far less than the $835 million that an accountant who previously testified for the Jackson family had projected the singer would pocket from 260 shows around the globe.

The company’s plans and calculations were presented to jurors hearing a negligent hiring lawsuit filed by Katherine Jackson against AEG Live. Katherine Jackson’s lawyers used the tour schedule to show the company had plans to mount an international comeback for the entertainer and that their expert’s assertions were supported by AEG’s own plans.

The AEG Live figures were intended to counter the previous estimate of Jackson’s earning power prepared by certified public accountant Arthur Erk.

Trending on Billboard

Erk had said Jackson could have earned more than $1 billion if merchandise sales, endorsement deals and the creation of a Las Vegas show were included in his take.

However, a lawyer for AEG Live got Erk to concede Tuesday that his projections were not based on historical figures of Jackson’s earnings or spending.

The touring schedule drafted by AEG Live in September 2008 included shows in Europe, India, Australia and the United States. It was prepared by a top AEG Live executive trying to coax Jackson back on stage for the first time in more than a decade.

Jackson eventually agreed to do a series of concerts in London’s O2 Arena. He died in June 2009 while rehearsals were underway for the “This Is It” shows.

His last tour had been in 1997, but the singer was scheduled to perform 50 shows in London beginning in July 2009. Jackson had not agreed to perform shows in any other countries.

Jackson died of an overdose of the anesthetic propofol administered by a doctor in June 2009.

His mother claims AEG Live failed to properly investigate the doctor who was later convicted of involuntary manslaughter.

A jury of six men and six women is hearing the lawsuit and would consider possible damages if AEG is found liable.

The company denies it hired the doctor or bears any responsibility for the superstar’s death.

AEG Live projected that Jackson would earn between $22 million and $30.7 million for the London “This Is It” shows. The singer did not have any sponsorship or endorsement deals for performances.

Jurors also watched a clips from deposition testimony by Jackson’s daughter Paris, who said her father told her that he didn’t plan to perform after the London shows but did intend to take his children on a worldwide tour.

“He still had a lot of music that he was still working on, but he kind of needed to relax,” Paris Jackson said.

When she showed up to audition, Jackson and other producers asked her to play the solo from the song "Beat It." After playing the piece, Jackson approached Panagaris, took her arm, and asked if she could play the solo walking across the stage at a specific speed. When she responded she could handle the assignment, Jackson hired her on the spot.

We’ve seen Travis Kelce and Taylor Swift spend a bunch of time together in recent months … and then the Kansas City Chiefs tight end was at all three Eras Tour London shows and he even did a cameo on stage in one of them.

Now, Swift continues her international leg of the Eras Tour, so you might wonder: given that Travis has some time off, will he be in Dublin for three days to see her perform again?

Maybe it’s possible that he stayed in Europe to be there, but no word at the moment on what he’s up to. So, we’ll see!
