Baseball is back at London Stadium!

St. Louis Cardinals will host Chicago Cubs in a National League Central Match-Up  on June 24-25, 2023

Fans can register their details here  to keep up to date with the latest information from MLB Europe.

The MLB London Series will be reprised in 2023 with a two-game series between the St. Louis Cardinals and Chicago Cubs on June 24-25, 2023, as was announced today by Major League Baseball (MLB) and the Major League Baseball Players Association (MLBPA).

The 2023 London Series will mark a return to the baseball-configured London Stadium following the inaugural Mitel & MLB London Series that was held on June 29-30, 2019, between the Boston Red Sox and the New York Yankees. The two-games at London Stadium were the first-ever regular season games played in Europe.

Both teams have previously played regular season games on the international stage. In 2000 the Cubs traveled to Tokyo, Japan to open the season with 2-games against the New York Mets and in 2003, played a 3-game series against the Montreal Expos in San Juan, Puerto Rico. In 2019 the Cardinals took on the Cincinnati Reds in a two-game series in Monterrey, Mexico.

“The Cardinals are excited and honored to be a part of the London Series next year.  The Cardinals-Cubs rivalry is one of the best in sports, and it will be exciting to bring it to Europe for a new audience to experience,” said William DeWitt Jr., Cardinals Chairman and CEO. “I have no doubt that the passionate sports fans in London will love these games and we look forward to creating some new Cardinals fans overseas.”

“The MLB London Series between the Cubs and Cardinals has been in the works for years now and we’re thrilled to finally be able to bring one of baseball’s biggest rivalries to fans abroad in 2023,” said Cubs Executive Chairman Tom Ricketts. “We hope that this series not only excites and entertains but brings more international sports fans to the game we all love.”

Graham Gilmore, CEO of London Stadium, said: “We are immensely proud to host Major League Baseball back at London Stadium, after the hugely popular London Series in 2019. This commitment will allow us to support the aim of MLB to grow the game in the UK for years to come, while demonstrating the versatility of our magnificent venue.”

The 2023 London Series is part of the MLB WORLD TOUR, a historic slate of games that will bring MLB teams and players to the league’s global fan base. The MLB WORLD TOUR represents MLB and the MLBPA’s largest ever international play plan featuring up to 24 regular season games and up to 16 exhibition games to be played in Asia, Mexico and Latin America, and Europe through the 2026 season.

The concert was awesome!!!! All the songs were great. The band was THE BEST, they interacted with the public, were really friendly and it felt like they were our friends! The place was also good. I would love to see them live again soon!

It fascinates me to think what a teenager from the 50’s would think of The Baseballs if they saw them today. Sixty years on, a lot of us don’t, or maybe can’t, realize that rockabilly, quiffs and double basses were all part of an edgy counter-culture of the time. To wear your hair up and play that kind of music was to mark you out as mad, bad and dangerous to know, a corrupting influence on a generation of teenagers. Not so much anymore, as the Baseballs themselves easily show, so it must sting for someone to see their rebellion and release turned into some teeny-bop caricature, but for the rest of us it’s quite simply hell of a lot of fun. Sven Budja (nicknamed Sam), Rüdiger Brans (Digger) and Sebastian Raetzel (Basti) are a true delight to watch, the three of them doing their best Elvis impersonations in front of a legitimately rocking backing band. The band are proudly a novelty act, but their covers of acts as diverse as Rihanna, Snow Patrol, 50 Cent, Meredith Brooks and Roxette are by and large genuinely inspired. It may not have much substance but for one night it’s a pretty spectacular ride, leave your inhibitions at the door and you might just surprise yourself!

Tyson Fury vs Oleksandr Usyk: Start time, undercard, and how to watch

Tyson Fury and Oleksandr Usyk will face off for the undisputed world heavyweight title on Saturday. Here's what you need to know about the hotly anticipated clash.

Tuesday 14 May 2024 14:56, UK

Boxing - Tyson Fury v Oleksandr Usyk - Press Conference - HERE at Outernet, London, Britain - November 16, 2023 Oleksandr Usyk and Tyson Fury face off during the press conference Action Images via Reuters/Andrew Couldridge

Tyson Fury and Oleksandr Usyk will meet on Saturday for a fight that will crown the first undisputed heavyweight champion since 1999.

The unbeaten rivals will face each other for the first time at the Kingdom Arena in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia.

British boxer Fury is the current WBC heavyweight champion of the world.

Ukrainian Usyk remains undefeated in his professional career and has yet to be beaten since switching from cruiserweight where he was the undisputed champion.

The pair were supposed to face each other in February but Fury got a "freak" sparring injury that forced him to postpone the fight .

A week of pre-fight events got off to an explosive start when Fury's dad John Fury headbutted a member of Usyk's entourage at a media event on Monday.

When is the fight?

The ring walks for the main event are expected at 11pm UK time on Saturday 18 May.

Coverage of the build-up begins at 4pm UK time on Sky Sports Box Office with two hours of the undercard on Sky Sports Action from 4pm.

Who's on the undercard?

Joe Cordina will defend his super-featherweight world title as he fights Anthony Cacace on the undercard.

Jai Opetaia will face Mairis Briedis for the vacant IBF cruiserweight title.

Here are the other fights expected on the undercard:

Mark Chamberlain vs Joshua Oluwaseun Wahab

Sergey Kovalev vs Robin Sirwan Safar

Isaac Lowe vs Hasibullah Ahmadi

David Nyika vs Michael Seitz

Moses Itauma vs Ilja Mezencev

Agit Kabayel vs Frank Sanchez

What have Fury and Usyk said?

Fury said he respects Usyk's achievements - but he's out to prove himself as the best in the world.

"I'm the best. I'm just defending my 'best-ness' against him," he said.

"We have weight divisions for a reason. When the cruiserweights step up to the big boys, usually they get found wanting.

"You can beat the average big ones, but you can't beat the elite big ones because size really matters. These are facts."

Meanwhile Usyk insisted he wouldn't be paying attention to Fury's mind games.

"I'm doing good, I'm happy and I'm hungry. I don't care how Tyson will be this week. I'm ready," he said.

"For me May 18 is important, what Tyson does in the press conferences doesn't matter.

"I don't think about Tyson Fury now. I've seen him in a lot of fights. I don't know how he will box against me, we will see when we get into the ring."

Usyk's promoter Alexander Krassyuk said the boxer's weapon was no secret: "His weapon is his mind, his heart, his experience and boxing skills.

"And the main thing about him that is different from Tyson Fury is his discipline. That is what makes him great and it is his toughest weapon."

Taylor Swift’s UK Eras tour ‘could generate close to £1bn’ for economy

  • Oops! Something went wrong. Please try again later. More content below

The hugely anticipated UK leg of Taylor Swift’s record-breaking Eras tour could generate close to a £1bn boost for the economy, it has been predicted.

The economic effect of the pop titan’s globe-trotting series of shows , dubbed “Swiftonomics”, has been widely documented, with her “Midas touch” impacting everything from hospitality to the NFL during her North American run.

In what analysts have dubbed the first billion-dollar tour, Swift sold approximately 4.3 million tickets with an average price of $238 (£190) and a further $1,300 in ancillary local spending on travel, hotels, food and shopping.

Live music business publication Pollstar reported last year that each show grossed around $17m (£13.5m), with $200m on top for merchandise.

Meanwhile, a report by the Economic Impact Research Laboratory said that Swift’s four Tokyo shows in February this year, where she played to 220,000 fans, added ¥34.1bn (£183m) to the Japanese economy.

Swifties are now preparing to flock to cities around the UK and Ireland from June, when she will perform career-spanning sets incorporating songs from albums such as Speak Now, Fearless, Folklore, and her latest record , The Tortured Poets Society.

Data released by Barclays predicts that these shows will provide a £997m uplift for the UK, with spending by Swift ticket-holders more than 12 times higher than the average cost of a UK night out (£67).

After splashing out on tickets (around £206 but exceeding £400 for those who purchased VIP ticket packages) fans are estimated to spend an average of £121 on accommodation, £111 on travel and £56 on new outfits for the event, plus £56 on a pre-concert meal and £79 on official merchandise.

Dr Peter Brooks, Chief Behavioural Scientist at Barclays, said in a statement: “Whoever came up with the phrase ‘money can’t buy happiness’ clearly wasn’t a Swiftie. There’s growing evidence that spending on experiences boosts happiness and well-being more so than purchasing physical items, especially if that experience is shared with friends and loved ones.

“When it comes to cultural icons like Taylor Swift – like we saw with Elvis and Beatlemania in the Fifties and Sixties – supporters have such a strong connection to the artist and to the rest of the fandom that the desire to spend becomes even more powerful.”

He added: “For non-fans, £848 may seem like an enormous amount to splash out on a concert – but for Eras Tour ticketholders, every pound they spend is an investment in the memories they’ll create.”

Culture secretary Lucy Frazer told The Independent: “From stadium tours to open mic nights, we know all too well that live music is an essential part of British culture. Swiftie Mania has enchanted a legion of fearless fans across the country who are in for a spectacular show with Taylor's 15 UK dates this summer.

“They are not only set to generate nearly a billion pounds for the economy but will boost our brilliant tourism sector as we welcome gig-goers from around the world.”

Other experts have offered more moderate takes around the economic impact of Swift’s tour. Si Ying Toh, global economist at financial services group Nomura, suggested that the “total macroeconomic effect” of the Eras tour was “probably overstated”.

Regardless, local businesses are already experiencing the effects of Swiftonomics. The Black Dog in Vauxhall, south London, received a huge surge in footfall from Swifties eager to drink a pint in one of the locations named on her latest album, The Tortured Poets Department.

“We’ve had to turn people away as we’re at max capacity, so that shows the levels that we’re talking about,” the restaurant’s marketing director, Amy Crowley, told People last month.

“What’s been great though is that the fans have been amazing. We’ve had them shifting up to share tables with strangers to let people get in the door which is really cool.”

Management have also been capitalising on the explosion in interest by creating Swift-themed menu items, including the Swift Half, along with T-shirts and pint glasses.

Such is the economic sway of the Eras tour that it managed to spark a diplomatic row in March, after Singapore guaranteed a six-night residency at the expense of its neighbours in Thailand and the Philippines.

Swift signed an exclusivity clause negotiated by Singapore’s prime minister Lee Hsien Loong that was branded “unfriendly” by critics, as it prevented her from performing anywhere else in southeast Asia.

Speaking from the Australian city of Melbourne, where he is attending an Asean leaders’ summit, Lee confirmed that Swift was provided with “certain incentives” from a government fund established to rebuild Singapore’s tourist industry after the Covid pandemic.

While he declined to say how much the deal was worth, Lee said he didn’t regard it as unfriendly towards his neighbours.

“It has turned out to be a very successful arrangement. I don’t see that as being unfriendly,” he said. “Sometimes one country makes a deal, sometimes another country does. I don’t explicitly say ‘you will come here only on condition that you’ll not go to other places.’”

The UK leg of Swift’s Eras tour begins in the UK on 7 June at the Scottish Gas Murrayfield Stadium in Edinburgh, where she will play three consecutive nights before travelling to Liverpool, Cardiff and London.

Fantasy Football History: Why you shouldn't expect another Sam LaPorta season from Brock Bowers, 2024 class of tight ends

Fantasy football analyst Scott Pianowski debuts a series investigating historical rookie trends at each position. First up, the tight ends!

Jon Rahm ditched the PGA Tour for LIV Golf. So why is he talking like a PGA fanboy?

Jon rahm chose liv golf. and now he has the temerity to show up at the pga championship trying to position himself as a supporter of the pga tour and a member in the middle of a temporary absence.

the baseballs tour uk

Maybe Jon Rahm knows something the rest of us don’t. Or maybe he’s the biggest sucker in professional golf, an easy mark who got sweet-talked and money-whipped by Greg Norman and the Saudis into taking a deal that will doom him to a lifetime of professional regret.

It was hard to tell Tuesday at the PGA Championship, when Rahm strolled into a press conference and said the following in response to a question about how he sees the PGA Tour’s messy backroom politics now that he plays for LIV Golf.

“You guys keep saying 'the other side,' but I’m still a PGA Tour member, whether suspended or not,” Rahm said. "I still want to support the PGA Tour. And I think that’s an important distinction to make. I don't feel like I'm on the other side, I’m just not playing there.”

Did Rahm’s reported $300 million contract with LIV come with a duty to abandon all pretense of self-awareness? Or has dining out on the Saudi dime eroded his thoughtfulness the same way it turned some of his colleagues ( cough, Dustin Johnson, cough) into monuments of the competitive fire they used to possess?

If Rahm believed sincerely last December that joining the hit-and-giggle tour would help bring the PGA Tour and LIV closer to unification, the only honest way to assess his decision is that it failed.

He’s not moving the needle for LIV, which remains a bizarre product that isn’t seriously competing for eyeballs with the PGA Tour.

His departure hasn't forced the PGA Tour to get its own house in order because all public indications are that it's as messy as ever behind the scenes.

And at this point, the goals of LIV and the Tour appear so far apart – and negotiations between them so slow – that it's difficult to conceive what it will take to get the best players in the world reunified under one banner.

If Rahm is happy as a LIV golfer, playing on a tour where the results don’t matter while most of his contemporaries and friends squabble over the Tour’s backroom politics, that’s perfectly fine. We are far beyond the point in this debacle where it’s worth the oxygen to criticize individuals for the career decisions they've made or worry about who’s got the moral high ground.

When it comes to who’s got the best interests of professional golf in mind, it's impossible at this point to distinguish the good guys from bad. That’s how badly the PGA Tour has bungled every aspect of the LIV threat.

But what’s very clear is that Rahm made a choice last December. And now he has the temerity to show up at the second major of the year trying to position himself not merely as a supporter of the PGA Tour but as a member in the middle of a well-paid, temporary absence?

That’s not going to fly with either golf fans or Rahm’s former colleagues. It’s intellectually dishonest. It’s borderline delusional. And it may be actively unhelpful given the current environment where there’s a clear divide between PGA Tour players pushing for unification and those on the PGA Tour policy board who seem at minimum to be resisting compromise.

Last week, the big drama involved a revelation that Rory McIlroy tried to get back on the policy board after resigning his seat last year but was blocked by the current members. Some reporting suggested a growing rift between McIlroy, who has advocated for striking a deal with the Saudi-run Public Investment Fund (PIF), and the current Tour powerbrokers who include Patrick Cantlay, Jordan Spieth and Tiger Woods.

“It's good to see it differently, but collectively as a whole we want to see whatever is best for all the players, the fans and the state of golf,” Woods said Tuesday. “How we get there, that’s to be determined. But the fact we're in this together and in this fight together to make golf better is what it's all about.”

Meanwhile, Sports Illustrated reported Monday that investment mogul Jimmy Dunne, who worked closely with PGA Tour commissioner Jay Monahan and PIF leader Yasir Al-Rumayyan on last year’s framework agreement to bring the two entities together, has resigned his position on the PGA Tour board.

In a letter to his colleagues, Dunne wrote that “no meaningful progress has been made towards a transaction with the PIF” since the players were given more power in Tour decisions and that he can no longer help realize his goal of reunifying the game.

There’s no real clarity at the moment about what the Woods/Spieth/Cantlay group wants to see to get a deal done. Are they just flat-out opposed to the likes of Rahm and Brooks Koepka being able to play PGA Tour events after taking the Saudi money that they themselves refused? Do they simply want to play all their golf in North America rather than a more worldwide tour that the PIF would likely prefer?

It's hard to say because nobody wants to talk directly about terms given the sensitivity of negotiations that seem to be stalled.

“It’s ongoing, it’s fluid, it changes day to day,” Woods said. "Has there been progress? Yes. But it’s an ongoing negotiation so a lot of work ahead for all of us with this process, and we’re making steps. It may not be giant steps, but we’re making steps.”

Maybe they need to walk a little faster.

Divvying up the world’s best players across two tours has had a predictable effect on fans: They’re sick of the politics. They’re stunned by the greed. And they’re watching less golf on television this year as a result. Even the final round of the Masters this year took a hit, dropping 20 percent from 2023.

If you’re a golf fan who lives and breathes this stuff, the present is exhausting and the future is frightening. If you’re a more casual viewer or someone who buys a ticket to their local tournament one day a year, it’s completely nuts that McIlroy and Spieth are competing on a different tour than Rahm and Koepka. What planet are these guys living on?

Whether or not you have a moral objection to Saudi sportswashing and its growing influence in a wide profile of leagues across the world, the reality is that you can either bring them on mutually agreeable terms or let them destroy you. While LIV has not been a financial success and often seems like a caricature of a competitive sport with its 54-hole tournaments, distracting team format and dance music constantly blaring in the background, it’s not going away anytime soon.

And LIV has forced some long-overdue changes to the PGA Tour’s schedule, its purse structure and how players engage with the future of their enterprise. Phil Mickelson wasn't wrong about everything.

But at least Mickelson, as cynical and greedy as he was, picked a side and didn’t apologize for doing it. Rahm wants to play both sides while getting a pat on the back for the choice he didn't make as opposed to the one he made. He wants us to be just as wistful as he is that he no longer gets to play the Waste Management or the Farmers and is instead wasting time on unserious golf in Jeddah and Singapore.

But Rahm made his choice. He’s a LIV guy now who wants the PGA Tour guys to think he's still one of them. It doesn't work that way – not now, and maybe not ever.

Major League Baseball at London Stadium

MLB World Tour: London Series 2023

24/06/2023 - 25/06/2023

Major League Baseball is returning to Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park's London Stadium for the 2023 London Series! Next year's London Series is part of the MLB WORLD TOUR, a historic slate of games that will bring MLB teams and players to the league’s global fan base.

The Stadium will welcome two of the greatest teams in baseball as the St. Louis Cardinals and the Chicago Cubs go head-to-head on 24 – 25 June 2023.

This marks a return to baseball at London Stadium following the inaugural Mitel & MLB London Series in 2019 between the Boston Red Sox and the New York Yankees - the first-ever regular season games played in Europe.

Iain Henderson out of Ireland’s tour of South Africa after toe surgery

The Ulster captain is expected to be sidelined for around three months.

Lock Iain Henderson has been ruled out of Ireland’s summer series against world champions South Africa after undergoing toe surgery.

The Ulster captain, who has 81 caps for his country, is expected to be sidelined for around three months.

Andy Farrell’s back-to-back Guinness Six Nations champions face two Test matches against the Springboks, on July 6 in Pretoria and July 13 in Durban.

“Iain Henderson will miss our summer tour to South Africa after undergoing toe surgery – wishing you a speedy recovery, Hendy,” read a post on the Irish Rugby Football Union’s Instagram account.

Henderson was restricted to two substitute appearances during this year’s Six Nations following the emergence of Leinster second row Joe McCarthy.

The 32-year-old will also miss the remainder of his province’s United Rugby Championship campaign.

2024 NCAA DI men's lacrosse championship history

Notre Dame captured its first title in DI men's lacrosse last season after defeating Duke, 13-9. Syracuse leads all programs with 10 national championships including their most recent championship win in 2009.

*After the 1990 championship, the NCAA Committee on Infractions determined that Paul Gait had played in the 1990 championship while ineligible. Under NCAA rules, Syracuse and Paul Gait's records for that championship were vacated. The NCAA does not recognize Syracuse and coach Roy Simmons Jr.'s 3-0 record, and Paul Gait's 7 goals, 7 assists and his participation in that championship.
