Tawang Itinerary – About Tawang Valley | Tawang History

Beautiful landscape near Tawang

It is imperative to understand briefly the history of Tawang India and the legends associated with it before delving into the attractions and experiences that await you there. The origins of Tawang city date back to medieval times and are lost in the grey corridors of time.

Tawang is synonymous with the monastery that stands as its best-known icon and the history of both are inextricably linked.

Legend has it that, sometime in the latter half of the 17th century (1680-81), Merak LamaLodre Gyatso arrived from Lhasa on the instructions of the 5th Dalai Lama . His mission was to build a Buddhist monastery in the land of the Monpas . The land of the Monpa tribe stretched across what are now the districts of Tawang and West Kameng.

Merak Lama sat in deep meditation, hoping for divine guidance about where the monastery should come up. When he emerged from his meditation, he found his horse missing. He went in search of his horse and found it grazing on a beautiful and verdant hill that looked over the valley.

He found the place, perfect for a monastery, and taking this incident as a divine instruction, he decided to build the monastery there.

Tawang Monastery

In the year 1680-81, the Tawang Monastery came up , it shone like a pearl, perched on a high cliff, caressed by clouds, a truly mystical place, and the perfect abode of the spirit of Buddhism. The monastery was known as Gaden Namgyal Lhatse, which in Tibetan means, “the complete paradise of divine victory .

“ The town that came up around the monastery came to be known as Tawang , which literally translates in Tibetan as “ chosen by the horse .”

Tawang has had a chequered political history. It was under the Tibetan administration till 1950, when Tibet lost its autonomy, and became a part of the Peoples’ Republic of China. Tawang thus came under the control of the Chinese. It was in the year 1951, that India finally took control of Tawang.

However, the 1962 war with China saw Tawang fall to the Chinese forces and was in their control for a brief period before the ceasefire and withdrawal of the Chinese army. In spite of this somewhat chaotic history, Tawang is enveloped in an aura of calm and serenity and exudes a mystical charm.

Kaziranga Tawang Tour 8 Days [8D/7N]

If you want to visit both the Kaziranga National Park and take a Tawang tour in Arunachal Pradesh but have just about 8 days to spare, this Tawang and Kaziranga itinerary will be a good fit for you. This Kaziranga And Tawang In 8 Days is a great introduction to both these otherwise very different places.

The day-wise plan for this Kaziranga Tawang tour of 8 days that we will follow will be as follows:

Day 1: guwahati to kaziranga national park.

  • Day 2: Kaziranga National Park jungle Safaris [Jeep Safari and Elephant Safari]
  • Day 3: Kaziranga National Park To Bomdila/Dirang

Day 4: Bomdila/Dirang To Tawang

  • Day 5: Local travel in and around Tawang
  • Day 6: Tawang – BumLa – Shungestar Lake – Tawang*
  • Day 7: Tawang To Bomdila/Dirang

Day 8: Dirang/Bomdila To Guwahati

The tour begins at the Guwahati airport where you will be greeted and received by North East Explorers representative. On the way, enjoy scenic views of Assam countryside, paddy fields, and perfectly manicured tea gardens as you drive through the plains of Assam dotted by random, small towns all along, to the Kaziranga National Park . If you land early in the morning, you can go for Kaziranga Jeep Safari else, the evening is free to rest and relax.

Day 2: Kaziranga Jungle Safaris – Jeep Safari and Elephant Safari

Get up early and head to the elephant safari boarding point. You will be picked up from your stay well ahead of the safari start time. Once on the back of the elephant, enjoy watching the one-horned Indian rhinos from up close.  And not just the rhinos, you will get ample opportunities to spot different types of deer, water buffaloes, and a variety of native and migratory birds, among others.

After a quick rest during the day, head out again for a jeep safari deep into the National Park . A jeep safari is a really interesting way to explore and feel the jungle as it takes you much deeper inside the woods as compared to the elephant safari. Going deeper means sighting more animals, even some of the most elusive ones.

In the evening, head to the Kaziranga Orchid Park to enjoy some cultural performances (depending on the park’s schedule).

Day 3: Kaziranga to Bomdila/Dirang

We enter Arunachal Pradesh today. The drive will take you from the plains of Assam to the high mountains of Arunachal Pradesh. Take multiple photo breaks on the way, the views outside will compel you to! Lush green vegetation, high mountains, and interesting snaking roads will keep you company all through your journey today. Reach by late evening and stay at the beautiful Bomdila Monastery or a gorgeously-located Monpa homestay in Dirang (if staying in Dirang) for the night.

We start for Tawang today and en-route stop at Nyukmadung war memorial and pay our respect to the fallen soldiers there. Our next stop will be at the mighty Se-la (high-altitude pass) and soak in the gorgeous views of the surroundings. The breathtaking views up to the Se la itself make up for the day, you will simply not want it to end.

At Se-la, we visit & pay our respect at the Tawang war memorial . Then, we warm ourselves with some piping-hot tea at the army canteen before resuming our journey from Se la to Tawang . But, not before stopping for a small stroll by the lovely Sela Lake (which remains frozen in winter and much after that).

Next, we stop at the Nuranang Waterfall, or the Jang Falls, as it is also known. The sheer grandness of the waterfall is sure to make your jaws drop. By evening, we reach our lovely homestay in Tawang where more fun awaits 🙂

Day 5: Tawang Local Sightseeing: Must-visit places

Today is a relaxed day so, start your day at leisure. There are quite a few places to visit in Tawang which you will be exploring today. We begin our day at the Tawang monastery , located not very far from our homestay. We explore the place at our own pace. Stop and talk to the monks staying there, take in the views of the town from the monastery, and much more. Then, from there, we head to the Urgeling monastery , the birthplace of the 6th Dalai Lama and the Ani Gompa (time permitting). In the evening, we visit the Tawang War Memorial and experience the light and sound show there.

Day 6: Tawang To Bum La and Sungester Lake

Today is going to be a long day over bumpy roads for the most of it. On the bright side, today is also going to be one of the most exciting days of your Tawang trip. We start early today to explore the beautiful lakes and valleys at the higher reaches of the region. On our way to our first stop, the Pankang Teng Tso , we drive through what was once a battlefield. The scars of the war can still be seen all around.

We then proceed to the India – China border at Bum La , which is at an altitude of about 5000 mts above MSL! We spend some time there before starting our return journey to Tawang. Albeit, with a very interesting detour.  We visit the Sungester Lake , also known as the Madhuri Lake of Koyla (the Bollywood movie) fame, and spend some time there, impressed by the sheer size of the towering mountains surrounding the place. Not to mention the beauty of this unique lake. By evening, head back to Tawang.

Day 7: Tawang To Dirang/Bomdila

Today we start our return journey back to the plains of Assam. We re-trace back the route we had taken while going up, to Tawang. Enjoy the scenery outside and take multiple photo stops as you, please. By evening, reach your homestay in Dirang/Bomdila.

We wake up early today so that we can explore the monastery once again (if staying at the Bomdila monastery), this time while the monks are busy praying. After a hearty breakfast, we start our return journey, back to Guwahati which marks the end of this wonderful trip.

Tawang Arunachal Backpacking Trip

Hello travelers!

The Tawang valley, situated at a varying height of 10,000 feet above sea level is a sight to behold. Tucked amidst the high passes of eastern Himalayan range and home to The Lamas, Tawang boasts the largest Buddist Monastary in the country that houses 28 feet high golden Buddha statue.

The high passes of Tawang are home to many glacial lakes that are an epitome of peace and tranquility. To reach Tawang, one has to pass through Sela pass at an altitude of 13,700 feet. Naturally, this is one of the highest passes in the world close to the international borders where travelers can enjoy a beautiful journey sighting hoards of Army vehicles.

The stone village of Dirang, the apple orchards town of Bomdila, the Indo-China border pass Bum La at an altitude of 15200 ft above sea level are added attractions. Bumla pass is a great example of how Indian soldiers protect our country at harshest of terrains and climates. Arunachal is the least densely populated state of India which is pure, peaceful, unpolluted and unmatched scenic beauty.

The colorful and ancient architecture of monasteries & stupas is well complimented by the smile & hospitality of people, and rich traditions of the Buddist culture.

Amazing Trip with Nexplore Travel

Our trip with Nexplore Travel Company was amazing from the start. Anushila, who helped us plan, was very good at answering our questions and making sure our trip was just what we wanted. Once we began our journey, we were lucky to have Manash as our guide. He took excellent care of us, making sure everything went smoothly. Joynat, our driver, was great at driving in India's busy streets and made us feel safe. We had a wonderful time and think Nexplore is the best choice for anyone who wants a fun trip without any worries. We give Nexplore five stars! Continue Reading

Beautiful, flexible and fun

We booked this trip last minute (~week prior) and were immediately helped with scheduling tours of the Kaziranga park and major attractions. Anushila picked us up at the airport in the most welcoming way. They adjusted the tour for our requests to see a tea plantation and the city where most silk production occurs, Sualkuchi. Both of these were excellent additions and allowed us to witness the strength and beauty in Assamese craft. Our trip to Kaziranga was perfect and we only wish we could have had more days to the 5 day trip Read more

Our trip was great

We have just returned from a 7 days family trip to Assam Meghalaya with Nexplore Travel. As we have two kids we were worried for them initially but our trip was perfect. When we were planning the trip, Anu was fantastic in helping us customise the trip to our requirements and suggesting different options. We went to a few offbeat waterfalls in Meghalaya and the team is being happy to suggest different options and to be flexible. They also suggest the best places where we can travel safely with kids. Our drive Saikia was fantastic. He made sure that everything was OK without any problems. I would recommend NExplore Travel and would certainly travel with them again.

The Road ‘Barely’ Travelled – Journey to the hidden paradise, Tawang

Photo of Nerdy Adventuress

Brimming with cultural, national and military history, there are a few places that can be as enticing as Tawang . Located in the north western part of Arunachal Pradesh, bordering Bhutan on the west and Tibet on the north, it houses the largest Buddhist monastery in the world (outside Lhasa ), it is the birthplace of the 6th Dalai Lama, has one of the highest motorable passes in the world, is also the site of the historic 1962 Indo Sino war, and till date China claims it as their territory.

Photo of Tawang by Nerdy Adventuress

If these weren’t reasons enough for me to pack my bags and explore this mystical land, what more could be! I imagined this place high up in the Himalayas to be completely mangled in conflict; a place torn between religion, politics and nationality. But the reality was nothing near what I had imagined.

The road to Tawang, at least 70% of the total travel, is a nightmare. Absolutely backbreaking with bumpy no-road roads, it made me question if it was worth it. But like they say, “an adventure is never an adventure when it’s happening”. Neither was now. While travelling I cursed myself for this self inflicting pain, but my desire to visit Tawang didn’t die.

Day 1- Guwahati - Tezpur (161 kms)

As soon as we land in Guwahati, we make a hurried dash for Tezpur. Just as we exit the crowded city and enter the green plains of Assam , our vehicle has a puncture. *Bummer*

Photo of The Road ‘Barely’ Travelled – Journey to the hidden paradise, Tawang by Nerdy Adventuress

Hot and sultry and in the middle of nowhere, the tourist in me starts to get annoyed but the traveller in me was indeed happy. I got a chance to explore the little hamlets nearby.

Tezpur is the cultural capital of Assam and is located on the banks of the mighty Brahmaputra. A short walk around the city is the best way to explore.

Day 2- Tezpur- Tenga Valley (100 kms)

Kameng River

From Tezpur onwards it is all uphill. Once we entered Arunachal Pradesh via Bhalukpong, we could witness the sudden change in the air. Located along the Kameng river, Bhalukpong is a hub for wide water rafting. There is something transitional about Bhalukpong. From a Hindu surrounding there is a sudden shift towards Buddhist influence, with prayer flags and small chortens adorning the roads.

I was lucky to bump into some men from the Nishing tribe. Wearing their long hair tied up in a knot just above the forehead, called the Padum , the Nishings can be easily distinguished and they were more than happy to be photographed.

Photo of Kameng River by Nerdy Adventuress

Originally from the Tibeto- Burmese origin, it is amazing to see how this tribe still holds on to their traditions and customs which is in such juxtaposition to their existence in a nearly modern town.

Day 3- Tenga Valley

Tenga Valley

A quite valley that sounds of the bubbling brook, Tenga is a very small town which can be crossed in barely 5 minutes. Low clouds surrounded by mountains and the melodious flow of water, it is the kind of place Ruskin Bond would have chosen to write a story.

Chillipam Monastery

If this is too laid-back for you, then Tenga also has monasteries and a bird sanctuary nearby, ready to be explored. The Chillipam monastery, atop the mountain and old fort ruins at Rupa are worth visiting.

Photo of Chillipam Monastery, Chillipam by Nerdy Adventuress

One thing you cannot miss here is the walk across one of the many prayer flag decorated old ‘suspension bridges’. A huge gush of wind and it will set you swaying!

Day 4- Tenga Valley to Tawang (250 kms)

The road to Tawang is filled as much with history as is Tawang itself. After crossing towns like Bombdila(known for its apple orchids) & Dirang (known for its therapeutic hot springs), we climb higher until we reach the gateway to Tawang, Sela pass. S

ela pass which stands at 13, 700 ft above sea level, ornamented with colourful prayer flags fluttering in the chilling wind and a fantastic view of the Sela lake, makes it one of the most beautiful if not the highest motorable mountain pass in the world. By now my nose was red with cold and ears blocked due to the high altitude.

Photo of Sela Lake, Tawang by Nerdy Adventuress

Jaswant Garh War Memorial

Nestled in the arms of white mountain peaks, a little ahead of Sela is the Jaswantgarh War Memorial. Epitome of bravery and courage, according to legend, a sepoy of the Indian Army named Jaswant Singh fought all alone against the Chinese soldiers and the treacherous weather for three days during the 1962 Sino-Indian War. He was awarded the Maha Vir Chakra for his courage posthumously. This epic route is incomplete without one paying their respects at the war memorial.

Photo of Jaswant Garh War Memorial by Nerdy Adventuress

Tawang Gompa

On a clear day, one can see the Tawang monastery, as soon as you move downwards from here. As we drove towards Tawang, the landscape changes drastically, the green meadows were dotted with big hairy yaks and cascading waterfalls along the road.

Closer to Tawang, we could see people from the Monpa tribe along the road. You can differentiate from their distinct attire and their traditional hat made of yak hair.

Photo of Tawang Gompa by Nerdy Adventuress

Day 5- Tawang – Bumla pass & Sangester lake (37 kms)

Bum La Pass

After acclimatizing for a day, which is not enough, we head towards the epic Bumla pass. They say Tawang is the land of 101 lakes. I don’t know if 101 exists today but we crossed at least 4- 5 lakes, of varied sizes and in various states of freeze. The road to Bumla is considered significant since it is from here that the Chinese marched into India during the 1962 Indo- Sino conflict. Bumla pass, situated at the Indo-China border is situated at 16,500 ft above sea level is covered with heavy snow for most part of the year. This pass is also of great historic importance since it is through this pass Dalai Lama entered India while escaping from Tibet.

Photo of Bum La Pass by Nerdy Adventuress

Madhuri Lake

Another 40 kms through the snow covered route and we reach Sangester lake, also known as Madhuri lake since one song from the Bollywood movie Koyla starring Shah Rukh Khan and Madhuri was shot here. Can’t say much about the glamour quotient but with the fog down, and dead trees protruding, it is one of the most breathtakingly and sinister looking lake.

Photo of Madhuri Lake by Nerdy Adventuress

Day 6- Within Tawang

I kept the best for the last. My final day in Tawang and I finally paid homage at the mammothian Tawang monastery. Its sheer size itself can be overwhelming. With a capacity of housing more than 700 monks, it is one of the biggest Buddhist monasteries in the world. The main altar with it’s 27 ft high statue of Lord Buddha streams with pilgrims who come from near and far to seek blessings. The air inside felt heavy with the aroma of incense stick and smell from the burning of the yak butter candle, all together.

Photo of Tawang Gompa by Nerdy Adventuress

The monastery also has a centre for Buddhist Cultural Studies, a library and a museum with valuable artifacts and manuscripts.

Tawang is also of major religious significance since the 6th Dalai Lama was born here. A small shrine, known as the Urgelling gompa, is built here to venerate this holy ground. On the lawns I finally got a chance to interact with some people of the Monpa tribe. We could only speak the universal language of a smile, but it was evident that they were as curious and intrigued about me as I was about them.

Photo of Urgelling by Nerdy Adventuress

Not far from Tawang monastery is the Thukje Choeling Nunnery. Contrary to my belief that all nuns were serious looking religious beings, here they were absolutely jovial and will insist on you having a cup of butter tea with them. They would be even happier if you sit in the kitchen and give them company while they make the tea. Talk to them, they will love it!

Unlike what I had imagined, Tawang is a peaceful place closely protected by the Indian Army. The Monpas who migrated from Tibet to Tawang, live in their new world cut off, only geographically, from their true homeland but complacent with their farming and beliefs.

While heading back to Guwahati via the same terrible route, I was lost reminiscing on the marvels I had recently experienced. But this time the roads didn’t hurt so much. Like Bob Marley said, “Though the road's been rocky it sure feels good to me.”

*---*---*---*

There is only one route to Tawang, starting from Guwahati-> Tezpur-> enter Arunachal Pradesh via Bhalukpong-> Tenga Valley-> Bomdila -> Dirang-> Sela Pass-> Jaswantgarh-> Tawang. It totally depends on where you want to make a stop-over. Most of the people who have been to Tawang make a night halt at either Bhalukpong, Bomdila or Dirang.

Passes/ Permits:

Inner Line Permit is required to enter Tawang. This can be obtained from offices in various cities. For more information, log on to http://tawang.nic.in/reach.html

A special permit is required to visit Bum La Pass. The Permits can be requested at the Office of the Deputy Commissioner in Tawang District.

Acute Mountain Sickness (AMS) is common. You can combat it with either taking a 2- 3 days to acclimatize or take a Diamox tablet before entering Tawang.

Also do get your BP checked from time to time.
