TAVARES IN CONCERT: From their R&B beginnings to their disco heyday, the iconic soul siblings of Tavares have always been known for their party-starting grooves and infectious on-stage energy. Continuing to perform with four of the original five Tavares brothers, the group is as entertaining as ever, thrilling fans with their retro stagewear, synchronized dance moves, and feel-good jams. From the romantic balladry of "A Penny for Your Thoughts" to the disco funk of "Don't Take Away the Music", Tavares always treats fans to a dynamic, nostalgic, and booty-shaking live show on their must-see tours.  BACKGROUND SNAPSHOT: The Tavares brothers were born in Rhode Island to parents of Cape Verdean descent, and they began performing together in 1959 under the name Chubby and the Turnpikes. After signing to Capitol records in the mid-'60s and scoring several regional hits, they changed their name to Tavares and released their 1973 single "Check It Out". The track was the first in a long string of hits that included chart-toppers like "She's Gone" (1974), "Heaven Must Be Missing an Angel" (1976), and "Whodunit"(1977). In addition to touring with acts like the Jackson 5 and KC and the Sunshine Band, Tavares appeared on the soundtrack to the 1977 film Saturday Night Fever -- a gig that earned them a Grammy. They released their final studio album Words and Music in 1983, and by the mid-'90s they had become a trio following the departures of brothers Ralph and Tiny. Now a quartet after reuniting with Tiny, Tavares continues to dazzle on tour with their timeless sound, dapper style, and extensive catalog of hits.

Tavares r&b/ soul legendary group.

The Tavares brought back sooo many beautiful memories of my carefree teenage years. It was bittersweet, to see the group again without a few of the brothers, including lead singer, Chubby. He completed the group with his smooth, captivating vocals, however, all of the brothers are very talented and gifted. They certainly did not disappoint as they performed many of their hit songs and covered other artists’ familiar hit songs. I was totally immersed in the music as it took me back in time. This group is definitely underrated! Butch did his thang!!! Gotta love him! I look forward to seeing another outstanding performance, hopefully, at this venue, The Paramount Theater.

This was a great concert, better than I expected. Would love to see them again.

Too Many Covers

They sure can put on a great show and wonderful to see 4 Tavares family members! However, they played a lot of covers rather than more of their own songs. I really wanted to hear "Too Late."I loved the Paramount Theatre too. First time there.

Very good show

Put on a nice show, good musicians good singing entertaining

Great show. Tavares not on until the end.

This was a great show. Tavares was on last and it was too late. Great to see Butch.

Loved the show and the engery! Played many of their hits.

Fun to relive old memories with music. The band brought those happy innocent times back!

Very entertaining, a lot of fun , energizing, melodies good to dance

This might be the best concert I ever went to! It was so much fun, and I love the venue

Disco Fever

It was great! It started on time at 7 pm with Danny Terio MC. Then one act after another went on. Singing and dancing to all the music and watching the people in their costumes was fun too.

WHERE ARE THEY NOW? Tavares Brothers still touring U.S. and Europe +VIDEOS

Tavares in 1974. From left: Chubby, Ralph, Butch, Pooch and Tiny Tavares.

DARTMOUTH, Mass. — The Tavares Brothers are stayin' alive.

The band that shared in the Grammy for Best Album of the Year in 1978 for its performance of the Bee Gees' "More Than a Woman" is still touring 40 years later.

Ralph Tavares, the oldest of six brothers (the others being Victor, Pooch, Chubby, Butch and Tiny) is playing at Anaheim Disney this weekend and then four of the brothers head to Europe, where they are touring with Sister Sledge and Kool & the Gang.

Ralph left the group in 1984 because it was too challenging to raise a family and tour. He spent the next 30 years as a court officer in Fall River Superior Court. His last trial was the murder trial of Aaron Hernandez.

When Pooch had a stroke in 2014, he retired, and Ralph rejoined the band, playing his first return concert in Boston's Government Center.

"I never thought I'd be doing this at my age," said Ralph, who is 76. ""We enjoy it so much. It's part of our family history."

The brothers began performing when they were kids, singing Cape Verdean classics with their father. The family lived in Providence and Ralph attended Hope High School.

In 1964, they formed a band called Chubby and the Turnpikes and hit the road. Victor left and his five brothers continued touring.

A year later, the band signed its first record contract with Capitol Records and recorded their first hit, "Check it Out," which made the top 10.

The Tavares Brothers continued to climb, scoring a rhythm and blues hit with Hall & Oates' "She's Gone."

"We met the Bee Gees on tour in 1975," Ralph recalled. "The came to our show and Barry said he would write a song for us."

That song was "More than a Woman," which was included along with the Bee Gees' version in the hit disco movie "Saturday Night Fever" and on its sound track.

"My picture is on the back cover," Ralph said.

By then they were known as the Tavares Brothers and they were touring with headline bands like Michael Jackson and the Temptations.

"My most memorable meeting was meeting Grace Kelly in Monaco," Ralph said. "As we were getting out of our limousine, she was coming out of the casino. I asked for her autograph and she said, 'Hold on, Rennie.' She was just as nice as could be."

Rennie was Prince Rainier III of Monaco. Kelly, a famous actress, was his wife.

One of their biggest hits, "It Only Takes a Minute," led the band to open for The Jackson 5, who were also touring with KC and the Sunshine Band. A string of hits followed, four of their albums went gold, and one went platinum.

Today, Ralph's favorite act is Bruno Mars.

The brothers are far-flung: Ralph lives in Dartmouth, Butch and Chubby live in Florida and Tiny is moving there.

As a child singing with his father, Ralph could never have imagined playing Madison Square Garden and hanging out with The Jackson 5.

"God has been good to us," he said. "He has preserved our family. We're all in good health. I'm thankful to be doing what we're doing."

The story of Tavares is the inspirational tale of a band of young brothers bound not only by blood, prodigious talent, and a rich musical legacy, but by a fierce determination to succeed in the music business. Over two decades, the Tavares Brothers managed to place 8 singles on Billboard’s Top 40, 12 Singles on the R&B Top 10 Chart (Including three #1 records), 3 Dance Chart Hits (1 at #3 and 2 at #1), 10 Hit Albums, and won a Grammy Award for their work on the soundtrack to Saturday Night Fever, (Recently certified 15 times Platinum). Although most resources refer to Tavares as a New Bedford, Massachusetts band and it is well known that the family lived in Southeastern Massachusetts at different times, it is equally well known that they spent a great deal of their early years in the Fox Point and South Providence neighborhoods of Providence, RI.

The Tavares Brothers started performing in 1959 as Chubby and The Turnpikes when the youngest brother was 9. P-Funk keyboardist/architect Bernie Worrell briefly joined the group in 1968 while attending the New England Conservatory Of Music. Future Aerosmith Drummer Joey Kramer appeared as the “token white-guy drummer” in a later incarnation called The Turnpikes from the Fall of 1969 until September 1970, when he was invited to join Aerosmith.

Chubby and The Turnpikes signed with Capitol Records in 1967 and had a couple of local hit records including “I Know The Inside Story” in 1967 and “Nothing But Promises” in 1968.

By 1973, they had changed their name to Tavares and scored their first R&B Top 10 (Pop Top 40) hit with “Check It Out”, (produced by old friend Robert “Boogie” Bowles) and soon began charting regularly on the R&B and Pop Charts. Their first album included their brother Victor, who sang lead on “Check It Out”, but dropped out of the group shortly afterward. In 1974, Tavares had a #1 R&B Hit with Hall & Oates’s “She’s Gone”, (which became a hit for Hall & Oates as well two years later). Tavares followed up that success with “Remember What I Told You To Forget”. Another old friend, Brian Panella had left Capitol Records and started his own management company and became the groups manager.

1975 turned out to be their most successful year chart wise, with a Top 40 Pop Album (In The City) and their biggest hit, the Top 10 Pop/#1 R&B smash “It Only Takes a Minute”, which was later successfully covered by both Jonathan King and Take That, and sampled by Jennifer Lopez. They parlayed this success into a spot as an opening act for The Jackson 5. KC and The Sunshine Band was also on this tour.. “It Only Takes a Minute” was followed by a string of hits: “Heaven Must Be Missing An Angel” (1976), “Don’t Take Away The Music” (1976), and “Whodunnit” (1977, another #1 R&B Hit). In 1977 they also recorded “I Wanna See You Soon”, a duet with Capitol labelmate Freda Payne which received airplay on BBC Radio 1 but failed to chart. Many of their hits, however, underplayed their R&B background and gave the the group the image of being a Disco Act. This perception was reinforced by their appearance on the soundtrack to the film Saturday Night Fever in 1977. Tavares recorded the Bee Gees song “More Than A Woman”, and their version reached the Pop Top 40 that year. The soundtrack became one of the most successful in history, earning Tavares their only Grammy.

Later albums such a Madam Butterfly and Supercharged, strayed from the Disco format and were less successful on the Pop Chart (although they continued to have Top 10 R&B Hits such as “Never Had a Love Like This Before” and the popular sociopolitical “Bad Times” written by British singer songwriter Gerard McMahon. At the start of the 1980’s, Tavares left Capitol Records, signing with RCA. They had one last major hit, the ballad “A Penny For Your Thoughts”, for which they were nominated for a Grammy in 1982; their last major release was “Words and Music” in 1983.

The family Patriarch and father of all members of Tavares, Musician Feliciano “Flash” Tavares sadly passed away in 2008.

On May 3, 2014, Tavares performed a concert in their hometown of Providence, Rhode Island and the following day were inducted into the Rhode Island Music Hall of Fame. Along with Ralph, Chubby, Pooch, Butch and Tiny, brothers John and Victor were also honored for their contributions during the group’s formative years.

Tavares continues to tour the world and on April 16, 2017, they performed on the CBS Television Special “Stayin Alive, A musical salute to the music of The Bee Gee’s”, dueting with R&B star Jason Derulo on “More Than a Woman”.

2018 continued to be a busy year for The Brothers as they continue to tour constantly domestically and Internationally. In March Tavares toured the UK as part of the “40 Years Of Disco” Arena Tour and in November they return to the UK as Special guests to the Four Tops and The Temptations “Together Again” Arena Tour.

2019-2020 Tavares’s busy touring schedule  included a headlining slot on the inaugural “Ultimate Disco Cruise” and their first concert date in Santiago Chile since the 70’s.

Sadly in December of 2021, Ralph Tavares passed away 2 days before his 80 th birthday. Brothers Perry Lee “Tiny” and Feliciano “Butch” continue to tour, bringing their legions of loyal fans all the great Tavares music and vocal harmonies that they love.

I was so excited and looking forward to seeingg Tavares in November 2018, especially Chubby. I'd ordered some items on his website and to my surprise & shock, got a phone call from his assistant asking if I'd like to speak with Chubby! Of course, after nearly driving my CTS into a light pole! A fan from my teens watching Soul Train and American Bandstand and seeing them w/ some friends up in the Boston area many years ago, a night dancing was never over until "Don't Take Away The Music" or "Heaven Must Be Missing An Angel" was spinning! In spoeaking with Chubby, which was the honor of my life!, he said, "make yourself known" on the night of the concert. Sadly, on the night of the concert in NJ, the audience was informed Chubby was in the hospital but doing well. Sitting in the front row and missing Chubby, it was still great to see and hear Ralph, Tiny and Butch singing their great songs!

Chubby still makes a girl's heart "flutter" & his solo albums are wonderful. All in all, I hope to see them again and have a chance to tell Chubby he has my heart 'til the end of time!

Tavares

Ralph Tavares, the eldest of the five brothers in the Grammy-winning R&B singing group Tavares, whose hits included “It Only Takes a Minute” and “Heaven Must Be Missing an Angel,” has died.

Tavares died at his home in South Dartmouth, Mass., on Wednesday, two days before his 80th birthday, the group’s manager David Oriola said. The cause was not immediately clear.

Pat Rolfe, Trailblazer Who Became One of the First Women to Lead a Major Music Publisher, Dies at 77

The brothers, sons of immigrants from Cape Verde who were based in New Bedford, Mass., began performing together in 1959, settling on the name Tavares in 1973, the same year they had their first hit, “Check It Out.”

Tavares sang alongside his brothers Antone Laurence “Chubby” Tavares, Perry Lee “Tiny” Tavares, Feliciano Vierra “Butch” Tavares Jr., and Arthur Paul “Pooch” Tavares. Another brother, Victor Earl Tavares, sang only on the first album.

Trending on Billboard

The group hit their chart peaks with 1975′s “It Only Takes a Minute,” which reached No. 10 on the Billboard Hot 100 and No. 1 on the Hot Soul Singles chart, and 1976′s “Heaven Must Be Missing an Angel,” which got to No. 15 on the Hot 100 and No. 3 on Hot Soul Singles.

Tavares’ cover of the Bee Gees ’ “More Than a Woman” appeared on the Saturday Night Fever soundtrack in 1977 along with the original. The soundtrack won a Grammy for album of the year and was a massive hit, giving the brothers wider fame and leaving them associated with disco, though their music was an amalgam of styles include R&B, funk and soul. Tavares and all of the artists on the soundtrack received Grammys for album of the year.

The group was also nominated for a Grammy in 1982 for the single “A Penny for Your Thoughts.”

Ralph Tavares left the group in 1984 and worked for about 30 years as an officer in the Massachusetts state courts. He worked in the courtroom for the 2015 murder trial of former New England Patriots tight end Aaron Hernandez.

“He was very humble, but he would love to tell us stories about Marvin Gaye, Stevie Wonder or the Bee Gees,” Quinn Feno, a court-officer colleague and close friend of Ralph Tavares, told the  Standard-Times  of New Bedford, which first reported the singer’s death.

Ralph Tavares reunited with the group in 2014 and continued performing with his brothers until his death.

“They had a show booked for Saturday night in the Poconos,” Oriola said. ”We were going to celebrate his 80th birthday.”

The sixth inning became more than just a contest between Triple-A Buffalo and Syracuse on Thursday night at NBT Bank Stadium . It became a battle of brothers on the mound.

Cole and Beau Sulser only played together for one year at Dartmouth College in 2013 as Beau entered his freshman year while Cole stayed as a fifth-year senior. But the siblings had never played in the same game professionally until Thursday night, when Beau's Bisons took the 8-4 victory over Cole's Mets.

The stars aligned for the two brothers after Beau signed with the Blue Jays earlier this season and the Mets optioned Cole to Syracuse on May 8. When parents Roy and Pixie Sulser found out there was a week in which the two brothers' teams were meeting, they made the trip to Syracuse along with Beau’s wife, Jennah.

“I'm sure it was a really cool moment for them," Beau said. "And a proud moment to see that ... their sons, they still think of us as being their little kids -- and we're 30 and 34 -- getting to live our dream and getting to do it together.”

“To just have a moment where we're actually competing against each other, and it's not just theoretical, was really cool,” Cole added. “Me and my brother have always talked about it and joked about it, and it's kind of crazy that after -- I guess this is the seventh year that we're both playing professionally -- that it finally lined up to play against each other and then pitch in the exact same game and the exact same inning."

Beau entered the game first and retired the side in order in the bottom of the fifth inning as Cole watched from the bullpen, preparing to enter in the sixth.

“It was a very unique situation,” Cole said. “It's one of those things that ideally, you want to be as locked in to the moment, [with] what you're supposed to go out there and do, as possible. But I have to admit, it was a little distracting knowing that my little brother's pitching on the other side against us.”

In the visitors' dugout, Beau pretty much felt the same way.

“You know, the first inning I came in and I was definitely attacking,” he said. “(Cole) hadn't come in and pitched yet and so I definitely felt more settled ... but it really is tougher to watch him than it is to pitch up there myself. Just because you feel like it's not in your control.”

Beau's feelings were evident in the sixth after he gave up a three-run homer to Luke Ritter. The right-hander was actually more concerned about his brother's reaction than his misstep.

“That's not ideal, but I can handle it in terms of, you know how you're feeling mentally. But for your brother you're like, 'How is he handling it? How is he doing?"... It was awesome, one of the coolest experiences but definitely not the most relaxed half inning when I wasn't pitching.”

Cole, who completed 1 2/3 scoreless innings on a hit and two walks with two strikeouts, had the same feelings watching his brother pitch. On top of that, there was the added pressure of watching teammates actively cheer against their family.

“You know, everybody was asking like, 'Hey, so, when he's facing me? Are you going to be rooting for him or me? I'm on your team,’” said Beau. “And I was like, 'Oh, unfortunately, man, I'm gonna be rooting for my brother.'

“The one thing that was interesting was, when he walked somebody and your whole dugout is cheering and happy that they walked, and a part of you is like, 'Couldn't you have just grounded out?' It was a really interesting dynamic for the first time because obviously we've never experienced that.”

The brothers met again on Sunday in a 7-1 Mets victory , but did not face each other in the same frame. Cole pitched a perfect top of the sixth while Beau yielded home runs to Carlos Cortes and Brett Baty in the eighth.

But the outcomes wound up being almost besides the point, especially when they had a chance to come full circle and play catch together before Saturday's game.

“I'm trying to learn a sinker, and he had a grip that a guy on his team was working with," Beau said. "He came over and showed me and so one thing led to another, and I was like, 'Well, let me throw you a couple' and so we ended up playing catch a little bit at the end of their batting practice. So I think the big takeaway for me is just kind of lucky we are.”

“I think overall, it was just a really cool experience that we never knew if we would ever have the opportunity to actually get to do,” Cole added. “To be able to see it kind of come full circle, from being little kids playing on Little League fields to now facing each other in Triple-A years later, years into our professional career was just a really cool experience.”

Lexi Thompson, 29, to retire from full-time competition

Change Text Size

Lexi Thompson, the 29-year-old LPGA star who made a cameo on the PGA TOUR last fall and whose two older brothers have held TOUR cards, will be retiring from fulltime competition at the end of this year, she announced on Instagram on Tuesday.

The winner of 11 tournaments on the LPGA Tour, including one major, Thompson had a long career that started early. She was only 12 at the 2007 U.S. Women’s Open, becoming the youngest at the time to qualify, and was 14 when she made the cut in that historic tournament.

She was 15 when she finished runner-up at the 2010 Evian Masters. This week will mark her 18th consecutive start in the U.S. Women’s Open at Lancaster Country Club.

Long one of the best American players, Thompson played in six Solheim Cups and was a two-time Olympian. This season had been a struggle, with Thompson missing the cut in four of her six starts, including her last three. She is winless on the LPGA Tour since 2019, and her close calls in a handful of majors were painful, but her popularity never waned.

Last fall, Thompson became just the seventh woman to play in a PGA TOUR event at the Shriners Children’s Open, where she shot a second-round 69 and threatened to become the first woman to make a cut on the PGA TOUR since Babe Didrikson Zaharias in 1945.

Lexi Thompson's goal to 'inspire others' at Shriners

After an opening-round 73, Thompson wowed in Round 2, briefly reaching 4-under. But bogeys on Nos. 5 and 8, two of her final five holes, gave her a 2-under 69. Although she missed the cut by three, it was just the second sub-70 score by a woman in PGA TOUR history.

Her older brothers, Nicholas and Curtis, have also played on the PGA TOUR.

Thompson also played alongside Rose Zhang, Rory McIlroy and Max Homa at "Capital One’s The Match," a 12-hole charity skins game, at The Park at West Palm Beach in February.

John Tavares talks Leafs future as he reinforces his value with Team Canada: ‘I’ll give it everything’

PRAGUE, CZECH REPUBLIC - MAY 16: John Tavares #91 of Canada looks on during the preliminary round match between Canada and Norway at Prague Arena on May 16, 2024 in Prague, Czech Republic. (Photo by RvS.Media/Monika Majer/Getty Images)

PRAGUE — In immediately trading one Maple Leaf uniform for another after a playoff loss that he says left an open wound, John Tavares has begun to heal by showing that he still has plenty to offer both club and country.

Tavares has been in top form for Team Canada at the IIHF World Championship, wearing the “C,” taking virtually every important faceoff, helping drive the team offensively and leading it through three tight wins to close out the tournament’s group stage ahead of Thursday’s quarterfinal matchup with Slovakia.

With a large group of family having made the trip overseas, including wife Aryne and the couple’s three young children, Jace, Axton and Raelynn, Tavares is focused on creating an experience they’ll one day be able to look back on fondly.

The desire to seize the moment is natural when you’ve waited nearly eight years to pull your country’s sweater back on, due mainly to a deep freeze on the international hockey calendar that is only now beginning to thaw. There is also the fact that Tavares need only look to the stands at O2 Arena, where former Sochi Olympic linemates Rick Nash and Ryan Getzlaf now watch on from Canada’s management box, for a reminder of how time continues to march forward.

“It’s nuts,” he said.

Tavares is not yet old, with a 34th birthday awaiting in September. But as with any athlete who has more playing career behind him than ahead, he must fight to stay as close to the top as he can for as long as he can.

“I think I’ll always believe that I have lots of game left,” Tavares told The Athletic on Wednesday. “I’m just going to continue to enjoy it, keep competing, and when I’m playing, I’ll give it everything I’ve got and try to do everything I can to help my team have success.”

Viewed in that context, it’s easy to understand why he accepted Hockey Canada’s invitation to the World Championship just days after the Maple Leafs season ended with a first-round Game 7 overtime loss in Boston.

The hockey world wasn’t standing still, and neither was Tavares. He felt like his body and mind were still up to the task of competing. And with the Stanley Cup no longer attainable, the chase for a first career World Championship gold became appealing.

Here we are in late May, and Tavares continues to battle through tense, physical games carrying significant stakes while changes are made back home with an eye toward putting the Leafs back in a spot to do the same next spring.

The organization has made a coaching shakeup since this trip began — firing Sheldon Keefe as Tavares was boarding a flight to Europe on May 9 before hiring Craig Berube last Friday. The Leafs captain caught up with his new boss for a 10-minute introductory phone conversation during Team Canada’s off day Monday.

“He was great,” Tavares said. “We talked a lot about just how he wants to communicate and the importance of that. (He believes) that there’s a lot of good things that we’ve done and where the team is at. He thinks he can help push us further and help us get better.

“As a player, that’s what you love to hear.”

It’s an especially important time for Tavares as he enters the final season of the seven-year contract he signed with the Leafs in 2018. That leaves him eligible to sign an extension with his hometown team on July 1 under the rules of the NHL ’s collective bargaining agreement.

Some have speculated that the Leafs could ask Tavares to waive his full no-trade clause, but he’s said in the past he won’t do so and that remains the case. He also plans to meet with Berube face to face when he gets back to Toronto — not the action of someone with one foot out the door.

Meanwhile, Tavares’ strong two-way play at the world championship has been a reminder of how differently performance can be perceived when not viewed only through the prism of a salary-cap hit.

With respect to Dylan Cozens , who has filled the net with eight goals in seven games, there has been no more complete Canadian player in Prague than Tavares. He’s won 76 percent of his faceoffs, giving head coach André Tourigny an extremely reliable safety blanket as the team heads into three must-win games to claim gold. He’s also put up eight points in six games, with his lone goal (on 21 shots) standing as an overtime winner.

Above all, Tavares has set the standard for a team that doesn’t have another 1,000-plus-game NHL player or anyone with an international resume remotely as accomplished as his.

“He’s a true leader,” said Nash, Team Canada’s general manager for worlds.

“From the moment he came, he brought a lot of maturity and experience and presence in our group,” Tourigny added. “He’s been with the World Cup team and Olympic team, and you can see it’s not his first rodeo. He knows. He has a calm presence and he knows that adversity is part of that kind of a journey.”

To watch Tavares up close in this environment is to be reminded about how much value there is in all he’s been through. While 18-year-old Connor Bedard has struggled to earn the trust needed to grab hold of a significant role on the Canadian team, the No. 1 pick from 14 years before him has consistently made the solid defensive reads and smart plays needed to keep getting thrown over the boards.

Tavares also doesn’t sound like a player who intends on receding into the background internationally — not with the 4 Nations Face-Off scheduled for next February and the 2026 Winter Olympics looming a year beyond that.

“I think that’s why you saw so many guys come over (to the World Championship),” he said. “Just what’s coming up here and how we’re finally building an international schedule, a calendar of best-on-best, I think it’s going to be really special.”

This World Championship looks considerably different for Tavares than the three previous appearances he made at the tournament more than a decade ago.

He’s got his parents, Barbara and Joe, here not just to watch games but also to lend a helping hand with the grandkids. And he’s checked into a hotel suite featuring multiple bedrooms to ensure that he’s able to get the rest necessary to perform at his best while his young family enjoys a European vacation.

“It’s a challenge, the jet lag, especially with young kids, but it’s amazing how adaptable they are,” Tavares said. “They’ve kind of taken to all of those circumstances actually really well. We’ve had a great time so far and obviously want to enjoy the rest of what we’ve got here.”

‘Breakfast on the Farm’ teaches people about farm agriculture

BROWN COUNTY, Wis. (WBAY) - What happens when you pair sausage, eggs, and an interest in knowing where your food comes from?

More than 300 volunteers helping over 4,000 people at Wiese Brothers Farms for this year’s “Breakfast on the Farm”, that’s what!

“I think it’s really neat to get people on site and understand the part of that process,” said Partner with Wiese Brothers Farms, Dan Wiese. “How what you see out on the field, That corn growing or that alfalfa growing. How that gets back to the farm and turned into milk. And delicious food on the store shelves and on your table.”

With everyone involved having a strong passion for farming, they also took the opportunity to teach folks about the importance of farming and the benefits that it provides to the economy.

“You get to meet all different kinds of people,” said Assembly District 6 Representative and Volunteer, Peter Schmidt. “Nutritionists, your milk haulers, your immigrant workers, your farm workers, your neighbors, your friends. Agriculture ties in our society together. Because food is a way you connect.”

Attendees also took part in attractions like a ride-along farm tour, a machinery display, and more.

“I grew up in a farming community in Waupaca County. Everyone knew who farmed and who didn’t, and they knew where their food came from,” said, Naomi Dvorachek, who was attending. “But we’ve become so disconnected from it. I love to see all the ages out here. So great to have them so excited to see this.”

The money raised from this event helps cover the cost of free agriculture education programs offered in Brown County.

Lexi Thompson Announces Retirement From LPGA Tour

Yuka saso emotional after securing second major title at 79th u.s. women’s open.

Written By:

Sarah Kellam

It all started with the U.S. Women’s Open.

The year was 2007, and a 12-year-old, baby-faced Alexis Thompson arrived at Pine Needles Lodge and Golf Club to compete in her first major championship. She was a pre-teen sensation clad in a pink Titleist visor and a pair of ladybug earrings who was ready to try and make the cut in one of the most prestigious events in women’s golf.

And while she didn’t play the weekend that year in North Carolina, little did the golf world know just who that kid would become one day.

Now, seventeen years after that life-changing moment and still wearing those ladybug earrings, Lexi is an 11-time LPGA Tour winner, a major champion, a two-time Olympian, a six-time U.S. Solheim Cup team member and one of the most recognizable faces in golf.

And she announced on Tuesday morning that this will be her last year competing on the LPGA Tour, as she plans to retire from professional golf at the conclusion of the 2024 season.

In a lot of ways, Lexi is one of one. Fans have had a front-row seat to her every triumph, heartbreak, struggle and success since she burst onto the golf scene all those years ago. She was one of golf’s original teenage superstars, a wunderkind that adults and kids alike gravitated towards as Thompson was someone they wanted to root for, someone they identified with.

She has carried the mantle of women’s golf forward, never considering it a burden but rather a privilege to do so. It’s the littlest of things that Lexi has done that make the most lasting of impacts – signing every hat, glove, flag and ball handed to her over the last nearly two decades and always entertaining the requests of every person at autograph alley no matter how good or bad she plays. Funny enough, she still signs as Alexis Thompson, not Lexi, an autograph that she’s stuck with since that first U.S. Women’s Open all those years ago.

Her love and respect for her fans was something that Lexi’s mother instilled in her from a very young age, often telling her that it was almost her duty to make at least one person’s day better every time she left the house. And that has driven Thompson throughout her entire career, particularly as she’s pushed boundaries in the golf space. Lexi is well aware of the platform that her LPGA Tour success has afforded her and leverages every opportunity she has to serve as a role model for those around her.

tavares brothers tour

One of the best examples of that willingness to set an example came last October when Thompson became the seventh woman ever to tee it up on the PGA Tour. She nearly made the cut that week at the Shriners Children’s Open in Las Vegas, Nev., an accomplishment that would have rivaled her major victory. But that wasn’t Thompson’s ultimate goal when she decided to play alongside the men on the PGA Tour.

“It's been something I grew up doing with my brothers and have wanted to do, but to also send a message out to the Shriners kids that no dream is too small, and they can go after what they want and follow their dreams,” said Thompson in her pre-tournament press conference at the Shriners Children’s Open. “If I can leave here inspiring others, and especially the kids, the Shriners kids, that's what it's all about and what this tournament is. There is more than just playing golf.

Thompson also has the unique distinction of only being known by one name, as very few players in women’s golf are recognized by a singular moniker. Annika and Lorena come to mind. So does The Babe.

But Lexi is one of an incredibly small list of athletes to earn that honor in the modern era, joined maybe only by Nelly Korda in the last 20 years.

Hers is a name that crops up pretty much every time you ask a fan or kid at an LPGA Tour event, “Who’s your favorite player?” or “Who are you here to watch?” And no matter how she’s playing or how much her career has progressed, Lexi still moves the needle in ways that most athletes dream of doing throughout a career.

tavares brothers tour

But for the 29-year-old, it’s become more than second nature.

People are, of course, impressed by the golf. Lexi pounds the golf ball, throwing her entire body into every shot she hits every time she swings, an aggressive movement that still exudes grace and agility and produces some well-struck golf shots. It’s particularly fun to watch her mash her driver, but Thompson has a finesse around the greens as well that helps her short-game creativity shine, allowing her to take advantage of birdie opportunities and convert must-make pars when absolutely necessary.

But that’s not the only thing that draws people to her. LPGA Tour Commissioner Mollie Marcoux Samaan can easily sum up Lexi’s star power and what makes her so likable, both on and off the golf course.

tavares brothers tour

“Lexi's impact extends far beyond the golf course. She embodies the spirit and dedication of our Founders — always showing up and engaging intentionally to help further the growth and impact of the LPGA,” said Marcoux Samaan. “She is beloved by fans, consistently seen signing autographs and interacting with them no matter the result that day. Lexi’s commitment to our partners has also been unparalleled. Throughout her career, she has continually made time to engage with partners, their employees and their clients, and truly has valued their tremendous support of women’s golf.

“This dedication was exemplified last year when she was honored with our Founders Award, given to an LPGA Member who best exemplifies the spirit, ideals, and values of the LPGA through her behavior and deeds, as voted on by her peers. Lexi's remarkable career and the way she has conducted herself both on and off the course have inspired countless girls around the world to pursue their goals with passion and perseverance.”

tavares brothers tour

That tenacity has been critical to Lexi’s longevity throughout the years. This week marks her 18th time competing in the U.S. Women’s Open, a fitting number for Lexi’s final start in this major championship. She’s come close to winning this coveted title on more than a few occasions and will be working towards that goal again in Lancaster, Pa., but this time, there’s more to reflect upon.

As she traipses the fairways of Lancaster Country Club, memories from those 17 other U.S. Women’s Open will of course be flooding her brain, coming in waves so strong as she remembers her very first one in 2007, the one that started it all. Thoughts of her last 13 years on the LPGA Tour will certainly crop up as well, causing a wry smile or a singular tear depending on the memory sparked.

tavares brothers tour

But this isn’t the end. Not yet anyway. And while the moment will be bittersweet as Thompson bids farewell to the tournament that quite literally jumpstarted her career, there’s so much more still to come for Lexi the rest of this season.

And lucky for us, there’s still plenty of time to watch Thompson compete. The end of the year is still six months away. So much could happen between then and now.

Lexi just might once again wow us all.
