Resort Uphill Policies

Please remember, as an uphill skier, you are a guest of these resorts.  Please respect their policies, employees, and patrons in order to keep this uphill privilege available.

Choose your skin track to maximize visibility to other traffic while still maintaining a safe distance from such traffic. In low-lighting conditions, think along the lines of bicycle safety, with a solid white headlamp in front, blinking red light(s) in back, and reflective clothing. Remember that these are policies for uphill travel within the ski resort boundary, as opposed to backcountry access, which requires utilization of safe backcountry travel skills through potentially dangerous terrain.

Things are changing quickly with uphill access at ski resorts. If you do not see a link to your preferred ski area or the link doesn’t take you to the current uphill access information, please Google your local resort and ‘uphill access’ to find out their uphill travel policy. If you don’t find anything on their website, give them a call to confirm whether or not they allow uphill travel and if they do what their policy is before skinning up.

If you have any updates to these policies (changes, additions, etc) please email us from the contact us page.

Uphill access policy.

  • A valid season pass or lift ticket is required for all access to the mountain, including uphill travel. Uphill access is included with a valid lift ticket for that day pass, season pass, or Ikon pass. If you do not have a pass or lift ticket, uphill travel tickets are $15 and available at lift ticket windows during normal operating hours.
  • The mountain is open for uphill travel at 5:30AM every day. Uphill travel will be closed to the public at 4PM unless otherwise specified in the mountain and trail report.
  • You may only travel on terrain that is designated as open on the trail report. The trail report can be found online or on the Sunday River App. Pre- and post-season access is not permitted.
  • All uphill travel must take place along the trail edge. Groups traveling uphill should form single file lines, leaving as much trail width as possible available for downhill skiing. Under no circumstances should uphill groups be more than two skiers wide.
  • Uphill travel is not allowed on Ecstasy, Grand Rapids, and Kansas during operating hours, however, Kansas is allowed when lifts 14 (Jordan 8) and 15 (Oz Quad) are closed due to wind.
  • Sledding is not permitted on any part of the mountain at any time.
  • Terrain parks are closed during non-operational hours.
  • No dogs are allowed on the mountain during operating hours (M-F 9:00AM-4:30PM; Sat/Sun 8:00AM-4:30PM unless otherwise posted in the Mountain Report), except service dogs, which must be on a leash. For your dog’s safety, they must be leashed or have reliable recall under voice command.
  • No camping is allowed on the mountain at any time.
  • Never load a lift outside of normal operating hours, unattended lifts, or lifts with posted “closed” signs.
  • Ski Patrol reserves the right to close the mountain to uphill travel at any time due to weather, snow conditions, or other factors that may affect skier safety.
  • Failure to abide by these rules may result in loss of uphill travel privileges.
  • Uphill skiers should wear bright clothing with reflectors and a headlamp when traveling uphill outside of normal operating times. This will increase your visibility on the slopes to equipment operators and Mountain Operations personnel. Avoid using earbuds so you can hear approaching machinery.
  • Winch cat operation happens daily and poses the threat of serious injury or death to persons who come into contact with the cable. The cable may be hard to detect as it can oscillate between being buried in the snow and being visible as load is applied to it by the groomer which can be up to 3000 feet away. Winch cat operators will use flashing lights at the top and bottom of slopes with active winch cat operations in progress. Please do not travel up or down trails marked by flashing lights.
  • If you encounter a grooming machine on the slopes, yield and keep your distance. If you are wearing a headlamp, shine it toward the operator to make your presence known. Grooming machines have significant blind spots and may not see you. If you are attempting to pass a grooming machine while skiing down, give the grooming machine a wide berth, make eye contact with the operator, and ski on the opposite side of the trail whenever possible.
  • Snowmaking operations may be present at any time on any trail. For your safety, skiing around active snowmaking operations outside of normal operating hours is prohibited and may result in the loss of uphill privileges.
  • Skis and snowboards have sharp edges that are capable of cutting high-pressure hoses. For your safety, do not ski close to or over snowmaking hoses. Hoses may be buried below the surface of fresh snow.
  • During operating hours, avoid uphill travel in Snowmobile lanes which are marked with orange sticks of bamboo and rope on the sides of the following trails: Lower Downdraft/Lights Out, Escapade, and Roadrunner.
  • Snowmobiles may be present on the mountain at any time. When traveling uphill, yield to uphill snowmobile traffic. Keep an ear out, pull over to the side of the trail, and make eye contact with the operator. Give snowmobiles a wide berth when traveling downhill.
  • To White Cap Top – Starlight, Heats On, Jibe, Heats Off, Salvation
  • To Little White Cap Top - Starlight
  • To Barker Top - Lower Lazy River, Lazy River
  • To Locke Top – Lower Lazy River, Lazy River, down Jungle Road, up Goat Path
  • To South Ridge Top – Lower Lazy River or Ridge Run
  • To North Peak Top – Ridge run, Dream Maker, Second Mile
  • To Spruce Top – Ridge Run, Dream Maker, Second Mile, Lights Out, Aludra, Sirius
  • To Aurora Top – Ridge Run, Dream Maker, Second Mile, Lights Out, Aludra, Borealis
  • Lollapalooza
  • Note: Uphill travel on Kansas in prohibited during operating hours unless lifts 14 and 15 are closed. Skiers must still obey all posted signs and warnings.

SR is currently up to T2, Upper Punch, Punch, Lower Punch, Right Stuff, Ecstacy, Jungle Road, and Cascades for current snowmaking. Should be an opening by tomorrow or Wednesday the latest, probably starting mid station but likely TTB by late Wednesday, Thursday the latest if the forecast pans out.

sunday river uphill travel

all good news - download shouldnt be that bad on a thursday. got the bosses permission for the nine year to play hookie, doubt she will be able to sleep tonight. Hoping loon gets open Friday, not sure I have three straight days of 4.5 hour roundtrip drives in me. Bronze sounded like a good idea in the spring, wishing I had gone silver now.

Vortex

I went and walked around Baker and Locke base a bit ago. 31F and mixed precipitation. Guns looked off, very humid, but raw. Snow is all the way to Barker lift, but real thin down low. If people ski top to bottom, even though not saying it will be open, Punch will be the way. Cacases in not close to being ready. Word, I got was wet and heavy but well covered mid station and above. I only spoke to one person who hiked to make turns. Sounds like getting it plowed out would help. Let's see if temps drop enough tonight.

If Vortex's report tells me anything on Loon, its that they aren't close to an opening. The only cam they have at seven bros shows less snow on the ground than the base cam at Whte Cap and they got into the mid 30's today at Loon. Maybe Saturday for them, I would think Friday would be a longshot unless thehumidity and temp both dive tonight. Hard to say though as they are not going on seven bros early this year due mostly to the chair install still ongoing there. So no cam to take a peak with.

Sugarloaf just announced a Friday open this week.

Loon was selling tickets for thursday as of about an hour ago. Now showing tickets for saturday.

That looks solid bigo!! How is Upper Punch?

machski said: That looks solid bigo!! How is Upper Punch? Click to expand...

Looks great.

chuckstah

Funny, most I heard did not like Punch as much either. I liked it better than T2. You could take lower punch to the bottom, but it was early season wild. What you Rember from years past, is what you got once you hit the water bars, better than downloading, but Rock skis needed. Tonight, will be cold enough to really help that out with snowmaking.

Snow making improvements do appear to be making a difference. T2 was much better than punch. The guns on Punch were wet. lower Punch was completely different than yesterday. 100% better. Talking to few last night, sounds like getting South Ridge open on Wednesday is the goal. Goggle and full South ridge operations for next Friday. That is kind of the Normal plan, but they are a few weeks behind.

No snowmaking changes to speak of on anything east or west of Spruce this year, but they can run a ton on Barker, Locke and WC from the past few year's work regardless. Aurora, Oz and Jordan will follow suit and be night and day next year. One after cooler was repaired which will bring air temps down a touch but not something really noticeable by the end user.

sunday river uphill travel

Uphill Will presented by Terrex

15 south ridge road, newry , me • 24 hour, 12 hour, 6 hour.

sunday river uphill travel

Welcome to Uphill Will, the East's only 24 hour uphill-only race! How far could you climb if you never had to trash your quads running downhill? Well, we are going to find out. Can you make it higher than the Northeast's Mt Washington in 6 hours? How about Mt Whitney in 12 hours? And who will step into the "Everesting" Hall of Fame with a 24 hour effort of 29,029 ft? Join TruStrength Athletics and Run The Whites on September 22-23rd at Sunday River for what will be one of the biggest races of the year. The premise is simple. The event is not. Racers start at South Ridge Express and run 1,200 ft uphill on wooded single track, open rock slab ridges, ski trails and gravel roads to reach the North peak Lodge. From there racers hop into an 8 person Chondola car and ride back to the start. Spend the 10 mins gazing across the immense scenery as fall approaches the White Mountains of New England while you refuel and chat with other racers. The Chondola spits you out and away you go for another lap! Repeat this for 6, 12 or 24 hours and we have one epic showdown. Let's get some vert!

What you get!

- Intense satisfaction from running endlessly for 6, 12 or 24 hours - A rad locally made custom award - A rad pair of socks you will want to wear - Entry to a crazy festival of Female timber sports events, food vendors, beer tents, and live blue grass bands - Incredible fireworks display after the awards ceremony - bragging rights that you did something this nuts

This is pretty simple: - The 24 hour category will start at 7pm on Friday the 22nd. - A headlamp is the only mandatory gear for racers to have on their person. Aid bags (1 per racer) may be sent to North Peak Lodge before race start (must be in loading area by 6pm) - Racers will follow the night time route up Service roads and mowed ski trails and then enter the woods on old MTB trail to gain the service Road at North Peak Lodge. - Racers can access their aid bag for things like fresh clothes, food, etc before getting on the chondola to ride down and start again. - All racers must remain on course and complete a full lap uphill in order for that lap to be counted. Partial laps will not count towards race totals or ranking. - We will only count official laps on course and completed by 7pm on Sat (racer back at South Ridge). - At 7am on Sat the 23rd 24 hour racers will switch to the day time course. - 6 and 12 hour racers will be lined up and ready to start at 7am. - 24 hour racers may pass by the starting line in an effort to continue on course (do not need to wait for 7am mass start) - Day time route will have the same 1/3 mile start on wide service roads before taking a ski trail into the woods and following wide single track for the majority of the climb. The final 1/3 mile is on rocks slabs and mowed grass to North peak lodge. - All racers descend via the Chondola. - 6 hour racers end at 1pm. Racers must be back at the start line by 1pm for laps to be official. - 12&24 hour racers continue until 7pm (if they choose) and same rules apply for official laps. - Racers may leave the course at ANY time after and before starting a new lap to go to the bathroom, sleep, eat, or whatever reason. The category is a time limit, racers do not need to race for the entire period. (ex: you can race for 6 hours, check out at start line, go sleep for 4 hours, return and check in at start line, race for 14 hours) - Before racers leave the course after exiting the Chondola they are REQUIRED to check in with race timing staff to make sure we know you are not on course. This is for racer accountability and safety. We don't want to be looking for you on course if you're in your hotel room having a snooze. - You shouldn't need to carry much but there is absolutely no littering allowed at this event. Trash goes in receptacles or in your bag or carried on your person. - Race organizers may require GPS data (Strava or the like) to verify completed laps for podium winners.

Mountain Course Stats

Each lap will consist of: - app 1,200 ft of vertical gain - Just under 2 miles of linear travel - average download time is 10 mins - New car comes through average of every 30-45 sec

Winners of each category will receive some great swag & prizes from our sponsors: 24 Hour Female 24 Hour Male or non binary 12 Hour Female 12 Hour Male or non binary 6 Hour Female 6 Hour Male or non binary

Your Support Crew

This is an incredible event to bring your support crew to. Most races get pretty long for your friends at the base as they wait hours to see or help you. Well, how does live music and a timber sports festival sound to keep them busy?! You'll be passing through the base area about once an hour so that gives them a solid 40 mins to grab food from our craft vendors, listen to some tunes and watch some logs get cut with blinding speed. Let's face it, how can your friend not want to come? Pacers are not allowed on the course at any time but you can have supporters at the base area to root you on or give you food or other supplies.

What to know about the more than 70 miles of bike paths across RI

W hether you're looking for recreation, exercise or an alternate means of transportation this summer, Rhode Island offers eight state-built bikeways , with more than 70 miles of pedal parkway , most of that on off-road bike paths.

They go from the 1-mile Warren Bike Path to the 19-mile Washington Secondary Bike Path, from Cranston to Coventry. And that's not counting the fact that the Blackstone River Bikeway and East Bay Bike Path meet in Providence's India Point Park, connecting for a combined route from Bristol to Woonsocket of more than 32 miles.

Here's why Rhode Island's bike paths are awesome

While some stretches are decidedly urban in character, most follow old railroad routes through scenic and tranquil settings. Many parts of the state's bikeways pass through or near retail districts, offering dining and shopping opportunities, from tacos and ice cream to Indian and contemporary American cuisine.

"It feels secluded, but the businesses are right there," said AnnMarie Callahan, one of several riders The Providence Journal caught up with one Sunday on the Blackstone River Bikeway as it passes through several spots in Lincoln. "It makes a nice day if you take the path up a way, and then get off and have a good lunch."

Callahan, of Woonsocket, is a public school teacher in Wrentham. "It's flat," she said. "It's an easy ride. Anybody can do it. It's really good exercise."

A note about flatness: because most of Rhode Island's bikeways follow former railroad routes, they tend not to have steep grades. But some extended uphill grades, though not steep, can add to the work required to ride them. And a few short hills, notably on the East Bay Bike Path and Blackstone River Bikeway, will be challenging for novices. See the notes about those paths.

On many of RI's bike paths, the water views are a standout feature

Marissa Maloney, of Smithfield, riding near Albion Dam, echoed Callahan. "I like how it's pretty much flat," she said, adding that she likes how the route alternates between sunny and shady spots. "I like the views, the water views."

That was also a highlight for Donna Sawyer, a retired Pawtucket public elementary school teacher who lives in North Attleboro.

"Hearing the rushing of the water in the background is peaceful," said Sawyer, who was interviewed near a waterfall at Pratt Dam. "It helps me stay healthy."

The bikeways have been a multi-generational asset for Sawyer and her family. "We actually taught our oldest granddaughter to ride a bike on the bike path," she said, adding the young woman is now 24.

Here's details on each of the eight state-owned bike paths (Clicking the name of each links to the state website with even motre details, including where to park a vehicle near each path):

Blackstone River Bikeway

Length: 18.2 miles overall: almost 10 miles of off-road path, from Cumberland to Woonoscket, plus 1.6 miles of scattered individual segments of off-road path and 6.8 miles of marked, on-road routes between Cumberland and India Point Park in Providence.

Notable features: The bikeway passes over or near eight dams along the Blackstone River and travels along Providence’s Blackstone Boulevard. The off-road path crosses the Blackstone river several times, including in protected lanes on highway bridges and two bikeway bridges. It also crosses a 540-foot-long wooden boardwalk over Lonsdale Marsh.

Sights along the way: Capt. Wilbur Kelly House Transportation Museum, Old Slater Mill National Historic Landmark and the historic Blackstone Canal.

Food businesses are near, but not readily visible along the off-road path, and plentiful at several spots along the on-road bike route.

Are there hills? Notably hilly from the shore of the Seekonk River in Providence to near the Blackstone River in downtown Pawtucket, plus on the off-road path just south of Albion Dam and just south of River’s Edge Park, Woonsocket.

The off-road bike path begins/ends behind Blackstone Valley Prep High School, Cumberland, and in River’s Edge Park, Woonsocket.

East Bay Bike Path

Length: 14.5 miles of off-road path, between India Point Park, Providence, and Independence Park, Bristol

Notable features: Includes sweeping vistas of the upper portion of Narragansett Bay, beautiful shore views in Bristol, plus many food opportunities right on the path.

Access along the way to the Crescent Park carousel and the Audubon Society's Claire D. McIntosh Wildlife Refuge and boardwalk .

Two significant hills: the climb over the Washington Bridge, which uses separate infrastructure from the I-195 highway bridge, and along the Veterans Memorial Parkway in the northern portion of the path through East Providence.

Fred Lippitt Woonasquatucket River Greenway

Length: 5 miles of on-road bike route and off-road bike path, connecting Lyman Avenue, Johnston, to Providence Place mall and the Providence Riverwalk. The state recommends on-road segments for experienced riders.

Notable features: Passes Button Hole Golf Course, Providence.

Quonset Bike Path

Length: 3.7 miles in North Kingstown from Post Road to Pettee Avenue, entirely off-road
