Stevie Wonder, real name Stevland Hardaway Morris, is an American soul and R&B singer-songwriter from Michigan, USA. Stevie was signed to a record deal with Motown at the age of 11 and has been making music with them ever since.

Blind since birth, Stevie Wonder was passionate about music from a young age. He learnt to play multiple instruments and sang on street corners with a friend. At the age of 11, Stevie Wonder was discovered and signed by Motown label Tamla where he released several soul and jazz albums. He was successful even as a young boy and at the age of 13 became the youngest artist ever to reach the number one spot on the Billboard charts with his single “Fingertips”.

Before reaching the age of 20, Stevie Wonder had already released some of his most well known classic hits, including "For Once in My Life", "Signed, Sealed, Delivered I'm Yours", “My Cherie Amour" and "Yester-Me, Yester-You, Yesterday". Knowing how much he was worth, Stevie Wonder re-negotiated his contract with Motown after coming of age in order to obtain higher royalties and greater autonomy over his work.

In the early seventies, Stevie Wonder began touring with the Rolling Stones where his tracks “Superstition” and “You Are the Sunshine of My Life” picked up support and eventually went to the top of the US singles charts. Both songs won him multiple Grammy Awards and paved the way for greater commercial success that lasted into the late 80s. In fact, every album Stevie Wonder released from 1973 to 1986 was a top five album on the US charts, and every album since then has been a top 30 album with most being top 20.

With 30 top ten US hits and a mind-blowing 22 Grammy Awards under his belt, it goes without saying that Stevie Wonder has created a massive legacy through his music. Every one of his 23 studio albums contains material that has influenced artists across the globe. Having sold over 100 million records, the number of lives that Stevie Wonder has touched with his music is uncountable.

Live reviews

Anticipation is a killer. I’m fortunate enough to be able to attend quite a few shows every year, so it’s a rare occasion that I find myself with that awkward feeling. I live by the theory that going to a show is a perfect way to pass the time while you’re waiting to go to the next show. Sometimes there are events that are impossible not to anticipate though. They can be big events or small events, but for one reason or another, they are special. Last night was one of those big events…a living legend performing his classic masterpiece in its entirety. I can’t claim to have been directly affected by Songs in the Key of Life when it was released upon the world in 1976 (I was in the womb), but I do understand its significance as one of the most important albums in modern music. I can’t claim to be a diehard Stevie Wonder fan either, but I understand the overwhelming sphere of influence he has on artists across all genres of modern music. The man’s life story is almost as incredible as his life’s work. He overcame immense obstacles and impossible odds to achieve his status as a giant among peers. It was for those reasons that I couldn’t contain my anticipation. Seeing Stevie Wonder perform Songs in the Key of Life, an album I’ve had on constant rotation since the show was announced (on my dad’s original vinyl with the extra 7”), was going to be more than just a bucket list concert…I was sure it was going to be nothing less than magic.

Anticipation can cause expectations that fly so high that not even the voice of an angel can reach their heights. Anticipation can make a great performance seem only good in comparison to those unreasonable expectations. So it was that I found myself immediately disappointed last night. I was accosted by security for having a camera, even though it didn’t say anything about ‘no cameras’ on the website or emails about the show. I had to trek across the whole venue to ‘check’ the camera before finding my way to the seats. It was because of this that I missed Stevie’s opening speech, but I was able to catch the tail end when he asked the crowd to film and share the performance. Hundreds of phones went in the air, making me seriously question why my camera wasn’t aloud. I guess only shitty photos and videos were allowed? We were on the floor, but in assigned seating. No one was sitting down, but even in an upright position, there was barely room to move because the rows were positioned on top of each other. Somehow, in my vision of the evening, I completely forgot I was going to be in the Pepsi Center.

Despite my frustration with my surroundings, I couldn’t help but be amazed at how good everything sounded. Stevie was surrounded by a rotating circus of musicians and backup singers, as well as a full string section. At one point I think there were over 40 people on the stage. His voice was ageless as he kicked of Songs with “Love’s in Need of Love Today”, “Have a Talk With God” and “Village Ghetto Land”. I know they are completely different albums, but I couldn’t help but think of Kendrick Lamar’s To Pimp A Butterfly and how Songs in the Key of Life might have been polarizing in its time as well. “Contusion” followed, as it does on the album, and that’s when I realized the performance was going to include quite a few jam interludes. I am not a fan of the jam, so once again I found myself staring up at the ceiling, cursing my lofty expectations as they danced along with those in the nosebleeds.

It wasn’t until “Sir Duke” that I really got my groove. Notice I say “my groove”. Everyone else (on stage and off) were in lockstep from the beginning. It just took me a bit to come around. From that point on, it was smooth sailing through the first half of the album. After the closer, “Ordinary Love”, Aisha (his daughter) led the female backup singers through a selection, before they closed out the first half with two tracks from the bonus 7” that came with the original LP. We were an hour and a half into the show, but things were just getting started.

Aisha assisted her father back on stage for the second half, and after a quick speech about gun control (which divided the Denver crowd), he sat down at the piano to sing that song he wrote for her when she was born. “Isn’t She Lovely” is my favorite song on the album and he nailed it. The second half started out as a true representation of the album, but then it took a few twists and turns. After “Black Man”, he took us back to the 7” for the remaining bonus tracks, before bringing the beautifully talented Jasmin Cruz to his side for “Ngiculela – Es Una Historia – I Am Singing”. This turned into another jam that almost went off the rails, but was brought back home with a partial cover of Michael Jackson’s “The Way You Make Me Feel”. A little MJ was just what some people needed to get their second wind as the night got later.

Before I give offense to anyone on that stage, I want to stress how the horns, the strings, the percussion and the backup singers made for an incredible kaleidoscope of sound, in which no single part was any less important than the other, but I have to say that my favorite song of the whole night didn’t include any of them. “If It’s Magic” was performed by Stevie and the ghost of Dorothy Ashby. Stevie stood alone on that stage, while the album track of Dorothy’s harp played in the background. Her photo was on the big screens as he sang the song over her gorgeous strings. It was a touching part of the evening and it also showcased how perfect his voice still is. It was worth the price of admission alone.

Dorothy Ashby died of cancer, but another Songs collaborator was alive and well. This collaborator also happened to be in town performing a show with Chick Corea at Boettcher Concert Hall. So it was that Herbie Hanock and Mr. Corea came out to jam on “As” and “Watermelon Man”. Once again, I am not a jam fan, but I’d have to be an idiot to complain about seeing those three on a stage together. The crowd went absolutely crazy!

After having fun with a couple of his friends, Stevie closed out the album with “Another Day”. We were three and a half hours into the night, but he still took the time to introduce every single person on the stage during that song. I have to admit that I was getting pretty tired at that point, but if Stevie Wonder still had it in him to keep going, who was I to complain?

The night ended with Stevie playing DJ. More specifically, he became DJ Chick Chick BOOM! He played the role right. “What’s my name?!!!” He demanded the crowd put the BOOM on it! He assured us “he aint’ playin’”, although he very much was. After messing around with a mixing board for a bit, we were treated to “Living for the City” and “Uptight (Everything’s Alright)”. Then he brought out the big guns. Closing the performance with “Superstition” was perfection. It was 11:45pm on a Tuesday night and the house was still packed. Everyone was on their feet…

“When you believe in things that you don’t understand, then you suffer, Superstition ain’t the way, no, no, no”

Stevie Wonder overcame immense obstacles and impossible odds to be standing on the stage at Pepsi Center last night, almost as if he were a magician, and throughout the concert he proved he hadn’t lost of bit of that spark in his 64 years on this earth. He professed nothing but love for everyone in attendance, over and over again, and he received nothing but love back. Anticipation and jam sessions that went on too long for this anti-jam guy could have killed it for me, but Stevie wouldn’t let that happen. He put on the performance of a lifetime and it truly was nothing less than magic.

There are three words to describe Stevie Wonder’s performance at the 2014 Calling Festival. Not enough time. The Wanderers out there will know that there was simply not enough stage time to do the 64 year old musical legend justice. That being said, he put on an amazing performance, using the warmth of his personality to engage the crowd.

No coincidence that the day’s rain cleared just as the 22-time Grammy winner took to the stage. He was welcomed with a roar of applause as he opened his set with a Marvin Gaye cover of "How Sweet It Is." Other performed tracks include "Signed, Sealed, Delivered," "I Just Called to Say I Love You" and my personal favourite, "Living for the City." The setlist served as a reminder for long forgotten hits. Vibrant sounds left the instruments painting the atmosphere with colour. It was hard to ignore the energy released every time a note was sung. It was also evident Stevie Wonder was having a great time which encouraged the crowd to participate even more in this memorable occasion. The set ended with the wonderful feel good classic "Superstition" which had the audience of various ages singing along. If you have never witnessed Stevie Wonder live be sure to check him out. Then you will truly understand why this performance was so enjoyable.

I first saw Stevie Wonder back in 2010 at the Glastonbury festival, he came on stage singing

' My Eyes Don't Cry' - well I can tell you mine did!! It had been a long time coming to see the genius artist as my mother 'god rest her soul' brought me up on his soulful music. He danced and played his instruments as wellas any musician with their eyesight in tact... By the time he sang ' Living For The City the Glastonbury audience were singing and dancing along, as was I ( still crying though, with joy I might add...) He covered Michael Jacksons ' Human Nature' as we know MJ would appreciate and my fave 'Superstition' was just wow.. We had to leave the festival just before he closed his set, but from the fields back to the car we could hear him and our God 'Michael Eavis' singing Happy Birthday to celebrate Glastonbury's 40th Birthday... Long live Stevie Wonder and please if ever you get the chance to see the legend, do... You won't regret it....! Shabba...!

Let me start by saying I have nothing but love for Stevie, and have been a fan since I was a kid. This show was a bit of a letdown though. The show had so much 'filler' time, sing alongs with audience, background singer solos, and speeches by Stevie, that many people left during the break. He performed a medley of several hits at the very end, which was the best part, but I would have liked to hear these songs in their entirety and throughout the show. I had the opportunity to see his show many years ago in Lake Tahoe, and that show featured so many of his hit songs, the audience couldn't sit still. While this concert was long, and I can appreciate that Stevie still works hard and sounds great, it was a bit boring. Stevie has so many great songs- play the hits, don't bore us with filler time.

I originally thought, "Oh no. Not another old school type." when I first heard of Stevie Wonder. Boy was I wrong. I saw him perform in the fall of 2013 at the Global Citizens Festival and I have been in love with his music since then. His voice is amazing. Loved every second he was on stage and immediately went to hear his other songs once I got home. I have not been able to stop listening to his music. What is even more incredible is he gets so into his music, and he can play the piano and harmonica while being blind. Its easy to forget that he is blind because it doesn't seem to bother him. You can always expect great music when listening to Stevie Wonder, and an even greater performance when seeing him live.

If he had been born in a desolated cave, talent scouts would still have found Little Stevie Wonder, because word of his happy-making, virtuosic singing and songwriting would have traveled fast and far, even before the Internet. india.arie sang in her tribute to him, "You are the sunshine of my life, and are the Shakespeare of your time..." Laughter on the track, singing about rhythm itself -- he's pure joy; equally, a song about heartbreak will wreck you. Sometimes I like to just listen to the tracks where he only plays harmonica.

I saw Stevie Wonder at the 'Calling Festival' Clapham Common, and he was without a doubt the best gig I have been to. He was laughing and joking with the crowd , taking the mickey out of himself and there was a real buzz with the crowd, cant wait for you to come back to UK with yer fake south east london accent stevie, you are awesome. Some of my musician mates were desperately trying to get the other ticket off me, unfortunately I took the ex-wife.

Awesome concert. Awesome music. Awesome artist. The 8th Wonder of the world! Some emotional moments and moments of that sometimes subtle Stevie Wonder music. "Remember writing this song on a cloudy Monday". Words written 40 years ago so appropriate today "Love's In Need Of Love Today" "Have A Talk With God" "Village Ghetto Land". And the music of this genius continues to be sampled. Hearing it in its original form just 'Knocks you off your feet'!!

The concert was amazing ! It started about 30 minutes late, but the arena was slow at filling up. But the delay did not deter the enjoyment that followed. Stevie covered all the songs of the 2 album set, along with sidebars of humorous entertainment. Rather than the usual clapping for an encore, Stevie asked if we wanted to go home, and of course, we shouted a resounding NO. So we partied until midnight with some his famous toe stomping hits.

Music Icon Stevie Wonder Returns to Ghana for his 74th Birthday

A merican singer-songwriter and legendary musician Stevie Wonder has returned to Ghana, a meaningful event given his strong ties to the country as he celebrates his 74th birthday with his family on May 13. Wonder expressed his happiness to be back in a nation he dearly loves. This trip not only marks his homecoming but also coincides with his birthday celebrations.

In a candid interview with Oprah Winfrey, Wonder revealed plans to permanently move to Ghana in late 2020 or early 2021. At 70, the 25-time Grammy winner discussed his desire to shield his descendants from racial injustices in the United States, emphasizing his wish to live in a society where respect and dignity are inherent.

Stevie Wonder’s decision aligns with Ghana’s “Beyond the Return” initiative, a 10-year project aiming to foster an “African Renaissance.” This initiative, following the successful “Year of Return” which commemorated the 400th anniversary of the first enslaved Africans reaching North America, aims to deepen connections between Ghana and the African diaspora. It promotes cultural, economic, and social engagement, encouraging diaspora members to contribute to Africa’s development.

One of the most creative musical figures of all-time turned 74 today. To celebrate the life and legacy of the legendary Stevie Wonder, check out a gallery of all of his Top 10  Billboard  Hot 100 hits!

Blind at birth, Stevland Hardaway Judkins was born in Saginaw, Michigan. While attending Whitestone Baptist Church in Detroit at a very young age, he began singing in the choir. By eight years old, Judkins not only became a soloist but was also a skilled musician. After thoroughly impressing Berry Gordy and Ronnie White (a member of the Miracles who introduced the two), the eleven year-old was signed to Motown’s Tamla label, where he was given the professional name Little Stevie Wonder. At age 12, Stevie made his recording debut. He went on to release two albums in 1962, The Jazz Soul of Little Stevie and Tribute to Uncle Ray . Less than a year later, the phenom would capture his first Billboard No.  1 hit with the single “Fingertips.” With this, he became the youngest artist ever to top the chart. Although his next few recordings failed to be successful, Stevie still went on to have a number of other hits in the mid to late 1960’s. The “Little” was eventually dropped from his name. Wonder began to work in the Motown songwriting department, composing songs both for himself and his label mates.

In the 1970’s, Wonder became interested in utilizing synthesizers. He also vehemently wanted to start touching on the social problems of the world and for his lyrics to mean something. After signing a new contract with Motown, he returned in 1972 with Music of My Mind.  The album was different from most previous albums on Motown, which usually consisted of a collection of singles, B-sides and covers.  Music of My Mind  was a full-length artistic statement with songs that flowed together thematically. Wonder dealt with social, political, mystical and romantic themes. He also began exploring overdubbing and recording most of the instrumental parts himself. This components played a huge factor in the success of  Music of My Mind.  This album, along with  Talking Book  (which was also released in 1972), marked the start of Wonder’s “classic period.” His next three albums ( Innervisions, Fulfillingness’ First Finale, Songs in the Key of Life ) all took home Grammy Awards for the Album of the Year. At this point, Stevie had become one of the most influential and acclaimed black musicians ever.

With over 100 million records sold worldwide, Wonder is one of the best-selling music artists of all time. He has the most Grammy Awards by a male solo artist with 25. He helped expand the sound of R&B with his use of synthesizers and further electronic musical instruments. He is also credited as one of the artists who helped drive R&B into the album era. For his work, Wonder has been inducted into the Rhythm and Blues Music Hall of Fame, Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and Songwriters Hall of Fame. He is also lauded for his work as an activist for political causes, most notably his 1980 campaign to make Martin Luther King Jr.’s birthday a federal holiday in the United States. He was named a United Nations Messenger of Peace in 2009 and received the Presidential Medal of Freedom in 2014.

Stevie Wonder and Misty Copeland to speak at Peabody Conservatory's 2024 graduation ceremonies

Both artists will also receive the george peabody medal for outstanding contributions to music and dance in america.

By Hub staff report

Two of the most recognizable performing artists of their times, and trailblazing advocates for access and inclusion in the arts, Stevie Wonder and Misty Copeland will deliver addresses for the Peabody Conservatory's 2024 Graduation ceremonies on Wednesday, May 22. Copeland, the first African American woman ever to become a principal dancer in the American Ballet Theatre's 75-year history, will address undergraduates at the morning ceremony; Wonder, one of the bestselling music artists of all time, will speak at the afternoon ceremony for graduate students.

Both will receive the George Peabody Medal for Outstanding Contributions to Music and Dance in America, the highest honor bestowed by the Peabody Institute, presented annually since 1980. In addition, Johns Hopkins University will present an honorary doctorate to Stevie Wonder at its universitywide Commencement ceremony on Thursday, May 23.

"Stevie Wonder and Misty Copeland have dedicated their lives to making art and to lifting up others through music and dance, inspiring audiences and setting powerful examples for generations of younger performers," noted Peabody Dean Fred Bronstein . "I cannot imagine two more fitting speakers to send our graduating student artists out into the world to make their own impact."

"Misty Copeland has broken new ground throughout her career, as the first African American woman to be promoted to principal dancer at the American Ballet Theatre, and as an inspiration to many through her remarkable talent as well as her courage in breaking barriers—making her the perfect choice as the first dancer to receive the Peabody Medal. She is that rare artist whose name transcends their discipline," Bronstein said. "By excelling as a Black woman in ballet, she has led change in the art form, and inspired countless younger dancers, performers, athletes, and audience members—in the process, elevating the power and relevance of dance as a medium for expression."

Born in Kansas City, Missouri, and raised in San Pedro, California, Misty Copeland began her ballet studies at the late age of 13. After studying at the San Francisco Ballet School and American Ballet Theatre's Summer Intensive, she joined American Ballet Theatre as a member of the corps de ballet in 2001, and in 2007 became the company's second African American female soloist and the first in two decades. In 2015, Copeland was the first African American woman to ever be promoted to principal dancer with the company. Performing a variety of classical and contemporary roles, one of her most important was the title role in Firebird , created on her in 2012 with new choreography by sought-after choreographer Alexei Ratmansky. She also made history as the first Black woman to perform the lead role of Odette/Odile in ABT's Swan Lake during the company's inaugural tour to Australia. In 2022, she launched The Misty Copeland Foundation , a nonprofit focused on advancing diversity, equity, and inclusion in ballet and pursuing social justice through arts activism, with an after-school program called BE BOLD that aims to make introductory ballet accessible and affordable. She is the author of the New York Times bestselling memoir, Life in Motion , and a picture book titled Firebird . She has been honored with the Leonore Annenberg Fellowship in the Arts, Time magazine's 100 Most Influential People, Glamour 's Women of the Year, Black Girls Rock! Awards, and honorary doctorates from the University of Hartford and New York University, among other awards.

"By any measure, Stevie Wonder has been one of the most influential artists of his time, a remarkable artistic personality born of Motown but destined to exceed what even that juggernaut has meant to the world of music," noted Bronstein. "At the same time, he has been a leading voice in important social and civic causes, connecting his art with social justice to create a legacy of activism closely intertwined with his truly outsized impact in music."

A child prodigy who reached No. 1 on the charts when he was 13 years old, singer, songwriter, multi-instrumentalist, and record producer Stevie Wonder has won 25 Grammy Awards and the Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award, as well as a Presidential Medal of Freedom, the Kennedy Center Honors, and countless other honors. His long list of hit singles includes more than 30 U.S. top-ten hits and stretches from "Superstition" to "For Once in My Life" to "I Just Called to Say I Love You;" his star-powered collaborations from "Ebony and Ivory" (with Paul McCartney) to the AIDS charity single "That's What Friends are For" (with Dionne Warwick, Elton John, and Gladys Knight). Released in 1976, his Songs in the Key of Life was the first album by an American artist to debut at No. 1 on the Billboard charts. Synthesizing elements of pop, R&B, soul, jazz, funk, and gospel into his own signature and ever-evolving style, he was a pioneer in the use of electronic instruments and technologies that changed the sound of popular music. Wonder accepted his 1985 Academy Award for best original song in the name of Nelson Mandela, and his lyrics, appearances, and activism helped to advance civil rights in America and racial justice around the world; the song "Happy Birthday" propelled his successful campaigning to establish Martin Luther King Jr.'s birthday as a national holiday. He has also been a longtime advocate for improving services for the blind and those with disabilities and was named a United Nations Messenger of Peace in 2009.

Copeland and Wonder join a roster of previous George Peabody Medal winners that includes Terence Blanchard, Herbie Hancock, Renée Fleming, Tori Amos, Leon Fleisher, Yo-Yo Ma, Jessye Norman, Pete Seeger, Quincy Jones, Wynton Marsalis, Marilyn Horne, André Watts, Ella Fitzgerald, and Leonard Bernstein. Copeland will be the first dancer to receive the George Peabody Medal; the Peabody Institute's long history of dance training at the Preparatory level was extended to include a Bachelor of Fine Arts in Dance in 2018, an interdisciplinary and innovation-driven program that prepares students to lead as dancers, choreographers, and citizen artists.

This year marks the Peabody Conservatory's 142nd Graduation exercises, at which 94 Bachelor of Music degrees, nine Bachelor of Fine Arts degrees, 131 Master of Music degrees, 11 Master of Arts degrees, 14 Graduate Performance Diplomas, three Artist Diplomas, and 17 Doctor of Musical Arts degrees are scheduled to be conferred.

The undergraduate ceremony begins at 10 a.m. on Wednesday, May 22, and a second ceremony for graduate degrees follows at 2 p.m. Copeland will speak at the morning ceremony and Wonder will speak at the afternoon event. Both ceremonies will take place in Miriam A. Friedberg Concert Hall on the Peabody Institute's Baltimore campus and will be available to view via livestream. In-person attendance is ticketed and reserved for graduates and their families and guests. Additional details are available at www.peabody.jhu.edu/graduation .

Savvino-storozhevsky monastery and museum.

Savvino-Storozhevsky Monastery and Museum

Zvenigorod's most famous sight is the Savvino-Storozhevsky Monastery, which was founded in 1398 by the monk Savva from the Troitse-Sergieva Lavra, at the invitation and with the support of Prince Yury Dmitrievich of Zvenigorod. Savva was later canonised as St Sabbas (Savva) of Storozhev. The monastery late flourished under the reign of Tsar Alexis, who chose the monastery as his family church and often went on pilgrimage there and made lots of donations to it. Most of the monastery’s buildings date from this time. The monastery is heavily fortified with thick walls and six towers, the most impressive of which is the Krasny Tower which also serves as the eastern entrance. The monastery was closed in 1918 and only reopened in 1995. In 1998 Patriarch Alexius II took part in a service to return the relics of St Sabbas to the monastery. Today the monastery has the status of a stauropegic monastery, which is second in status to a lavra. In addition to being a working monastery, it also holds the Zvenigorod Historical, Architectural and Art Museum.

Belfry and Neighbouring Churches

stevie wonder tours

Located near the main entrance is the monastery's belfry which is perhaps the calling card of the monastery due to its uniqueness. It was built in the 1650s and the St Sergius of Radonezh’s Church was opened on the middle tier in the mid-17th century, although it was originally dedicated to the Trinity. The belfry's 35-tonne Great Bladgovestny Bell fell in 1941 and was only restored and returned in 2003. Attached to the belfry is a large refectory and the Transfiguration Church, both of which were built on the orders of Tsar Alexis in the 1650s.

To the left of the belfry is another, smaller, refectory which is attached to the Trinity Gate-Church, which was also constructed in the 1650s on the orders of Tsar Alexis who made it his own family church. The church is elaborately decorated with colourful trims and underneath the archway is a beautiful 19th century fresco.

Nativity of Virgin Mary Cathedral

stevie wonder tours

The Nativity of Virgin Mary Cathedral is the oldest building in the monastery and among the oldest buildings in the Moscow Region. It was built between 1404 and 1405 during the lifetime of St Sabbas and using the funds of Prince Yury of Zvenigorod. The white-stone cathedral is a standard four-pillar design with a single golden dome. After the death of St Sabbas he was interred in the cathedral and a new altar dedicated to him was added.

Under the reign of Tsar Alexis the cathedral was decorated with frescoes by Stepan Ryazanets, some of which remain today. Tsar Alexis also presented the cathedral with a five-tier iconostasis, the top row of icons have been preserved.

Tsaritsa's Chambers

stevie wonder tours

The Nativity of Virgin Mary Cathedral is located between the Tsaritsa's Chambers of the left and the Palace of Tsar Alexis on the right. The Tsaritsa's Chambers were built in the mid-17th century for the wife of Tsar Alexey - Tsaritsa Maria Ilinichna Miloskavskaya. The design of the building is influenced by the ancient Russian architectural style. Is prettier than the Tsar's chambers opposite, being red in colour with elaborately decorated window frames and entrance.

At present the Tsaritsa's Chambers houses the Zvenigorod Historical, Architectural and Art Museum. Among its displays is an accurate recreation of the interior of a noble lady's chambers including furniture, decorations and a decorated tiled oven, and an exhibition on the history of Zvenigorod and the monastery.

Palace of Tsar Alexis

stevie wonder tours

The Palace of Tsar Alexis was built in the 1650s and is now one of the best surviving examples of non-religious architecture of that era. It was built especially for Tsar Alexis who often visited the monastery on religious pilgrimages. Its most striking feature is its pretty row of nine chimney spouts which resemble towers.

David Sanborn, influential saxophonist whose work spanned genres, dies at 78

David Sanborn, the influential saxophonist whose Grammy-winning career included collaborations with Stevie Wonder and David Bowie, has died. He was 78.

Sanborn died Sunday afternoon “after an extended battle with prostate cancer with complications,” his team said Monday in an announcement shared to his social media pages . A representative for Sanborn confirmed the details to The Times.

“Mr. Sanborn had been dealing with prostate cancer since 2018, but had been able to maintain his normal schedule of concerts until just recently,” his team said in an X (formerly Twitter) thread . “Indeed he already had concerts scheduled into 2025.”

John Pisano, dean of L.A. jazz guitar, dies at 93

Pisano’s career spanned seven decades and included sharing the stage or recording studio with many jazz luminaries, including Chico Hamilton, Herb Alpert, Peggy Lee and Frank Sinatra.

May 10, 2024

Sanborn was known for luxurious saxophone melodies on songs including “Maputo,” but his sound — informed by R&B and global funk— and his legacy extended far beyond his jazz roots. Often perceived as a “smooth jazz” artist, Sanborn loathed that term.

“I sometimes get looped in with jazz musicians because I play sax and improvise,” Sanborn told The Times in 1996. “But if you know my music, you wouldn’t confuse it with jazz. There are certain stylistic and rhythmic elements that keep me from being in that category.”

Sanborn’s vast roster of elite session work and high-profile collaborators proved his range of influences. Stevie Wonder, the Rolling Stones and David Bowie were among Sanborn’s collaborators early in his career. After going solo in 1975, Sanborn worked with musicians including Paul Simon, James Taylor, Luther Vandross and Eric Clapton, according to his website .

Sanborn Makes a Case for Diversity Training

Pop music: Alto saxophonist argues that he’s not a jazzman, but someone who blends various styles. He also questions the need for so many different categories.

June 19, 1996

Among pop and R&B fans, Sanborn is best known for his work on Wonder’s “Talking Book,” Bowie’s “Young Americans” and records by Bonnie Raitt and Chaka Khan.

Over the course of his career, Sanborn earned 16 Grammy Award nominations and six wins, including honors for his albums “Straight to the Heart” and “Double Vision,” a collaboration with keyboardist Bob James. Sanborn released 25 albums, including eight that went gold and one that achieved platinum status.

“David Sanborn was a seminal figure in contemporary pop and jazz music,” Monday’s statements added. “It has been said that he ‘put the saxophone back into Rock ’n Roll.’”

A man with gray hair in a dark outfit standing on a stage holding a saxophone behind a music stand

Sanborn’s passion for the saxophone can be traced back to his childhood, when he contracted polio as a toddler and music was part of his treatment. By the time he graduated from the University of Iowa, Sanborn had played with guitarist Albert King and studied with studied saxophonist J.R. Monterose.

After joining the Paul Butterfield Blues Band in the 1960s (he performed with them at Woodstock), Sanborn began a long, fruitful partnership with Miles Davis’ arranger Gil Evans. Then in 1975, the release of “Taking Off” marked the beginning of Sanborn’s solo career.

His 1980 LP “Hideaway” was steeped in funk and raw production (the track “The Seduction” was a theme for the film “American Gigolo”) and kicked off a decade-long bestseller streak that included 1981’s “Voyeur” and “As We Speak,” 1983’s “Backstreet,” 1984’s live LP “Straight to the Heart” and 1988’s “Close Up,” which incorporated electronics.

In 1991, Sanborn released “Another Hand,” perhaps his most beloved album among core jazz traditionalists. The project featured an incendiary band with Bill Frisell, Charlie Haden and Marc Ribot. Later in his career, Sanborn returned to his genre-expansive roots on albums like 2015’s “Time and the River,” an acclaimed LP that spanned Latin, African and soul rhythms. “This Masquerade,” released in 2018, was Sanborn’s most recent solo album.

JAZZ REVIEW : DAVID SANBORN: A MAN IN COMMAND OF HIS SAX

David Sanborn practices safe sax. Revolutions are not his style.

Aug. 14, 1987

Beyond music, Sanborn pursued a variety of TV and film opportunities. From 1998 to 1990, he and pianist Jools Holland co-hosted the late-night TV series “Night Music” (also known as “Sunday Night), which platformed musicians including Sonny Rollins, Sun Ra and Sonic Youth. That program was produced by “Saturday Night Live” creator Lorne Michaels.

He regularly hosted the “After New Year’s Eve” TV special on ABC and fronted his syndicated jazz program. The saxophonist wrote scores for the “Lethal Weapon” film franchise and frequently joined David Letterman’s live band. He also hosted the podcast “As We Speak” from WBGO Studios.

Sanborn, who channeled and contributed to a wide range of genres and mediums, brushed off the need for labels during his 1996 interview with The Times

“If you shut out music because it doesn’t fit your preconceived listening patterns, you’re cheating yourself,” he said. “Opera, country, outside music, commercial music ... if you like it, it’s good. If it has meaning, use it.”

Times staff writer August Brown contributed to this report.

Indeed, he worked with a virtual who’s who of rock and R&B legends, including James Brown, Eric Clapton, Roger Daltrey, Stevie Wonder, Paul Simon, Bruce Springsteen, James Taylor, Al Jarreau, George Benson, Elton John, Carly Simon, Linda Ronstadt, Billy Joel, Roger Waters, Steely Dan, the Eagles, the Grateful Dead and the Rolling Stones.

In TV and film, Sanborn was a member of the legendary Saturday Night Live band from 1979-1980 alongside fellow alto player — and future Lord of the Rings composer — Howard Shore, future Late Night with David Letterman band leader Paul Shaffer on keyboards and his future frequent collaborator, Marcus Miller, on bass.

In the late ’80s he was a frequent guest with Shaffer in the Late Night with David Letterman band. He was also interviewed by Letterman several times.

At the same time, Sanborn, Clapton and Michael Kamen composed music for Lethal Weapon 2, 3 and 4 .

He also appeared, usually cast as a musician, in Paul Simon’s film One Trick Pony as well as Magnum P.I. , Scrooged and, as himself, in Billy Crystal’s Forget Paris .

Sanborn co-hosted the syndicated show Night Music from 1988 to 1990, which was produced by Lorne Michaels. The show featured footage of jazz legends like Thelonious Monk, Dave Brubeck and Billie Holiday, as well as banter and memorable music jams by musicians including Sonny Rollins, Miles Davis, Joe Sample, Sonic Youth, Pharoah Sanders, The Red Hot Chili Peppers and many more. Additionally, Sanborn hosted a syndicated radio program, The Jazz Show with David Sanborn.

At the age of three, he contracted polio and took to the saxophone as part of his treatment therapy. By the time he was a teen, he was playing with blues legends such as Albert King and Little Milton.

In the late ’60s he joined the Butterfield Blues Band and played on the final day at Woodstock. He was soon touring and recording with Stevie Wonder and recording for Wonder’s Talking Book album. He played with The Rolling Stones, toured and recorded with Bowie and toured and recorded with jazz great Gil Evans. He later collaborated with Simon and James Taylor, providing the signature sax solo on Taylor’s classic version of “How Sweet It Is (to Be Loved By You).”

Sanbron made his solo debut in 1975 with the album Taking Off , which featured the popular jazz fusion act the Brecker Brothers. His 1979 release, Hideaway, became a featured the single, “Seduction” which was featured in American Gigolo . He won his first Grammy Award for Best R&B Instrumental Performance for the sing “All I Need Is You” on the 1981 record, Voyeur .

Later albums included guest artists such as Luther Vandross, Jack DeJohnette, Bill Frisell, Charlie Hayden, Wallace Roney, Kenny Barron, Christian McBride and Clapton.

The following was posted on Sanborn’s Facebook page earlier today:

It is with sad and heavy hearts that we convey to you the loss of internationally renowned, 6 time Grammy Award-winning, saxophonist, David Sanborn. Mr. Sanborn passed Sunday afternoon, May 12th, after an extended battle with prostate cancer with complications.

Mr. Sanborn had been dealing with prostate cancer since 2018, but had been able to maintain his normal schedule of concerts until just recently. Indeed he already had concerts scheduled into 2025.

David Sanborn, one of the most popular and influential saxophonists of the past 50 years, died Sunday after an extended battle with prostate cancer. He was 78 and had performed as recently as January. His death was announced on his social media sites: “Mr. Sanborn passed Sunday afternoon, May 12th, after an extended battle with prostate cancer with complications.”

Sanborn performed dozens of times in San Diego over the years. He was a favorite with audiences at Humpheys Concerts by the Bay, where he rivaled B.B. King and America as one of the venue’s most frequent and popular performers.

Sanborn’s solo career ignited in the 1980s, but — both before and after that time — his versatility made him one of the most in-demand alto saxophonists in a multitude of genres. His many collaborators ranged from Stevie Wonder, David Bowie, the Rolling Stones, James Brown and Linda Ronstadt to Roger Waters, Bruce Springsteen, Todd Rundgren and such jazz such jazz greats as Gil Evans, Charlie Haden, Jack DeJohnette, Julius Hemphill and Bobby Hutcherson.

“What I do is an amorphous combination of styles that has elements of bebop, R&B and rock,” Sanborn said in a 1985 Union-Tribune interview. “Categorization tends to limit you to specific idioms and that’s not good for your growth.”

A Florida native, Sanborn was born July 30, 1945, in Tampa. He grew up in St. Louis, where — by his middle teens — he was performing in the bands of such blues greats as Little Milton and Albert King.

He attended Northwestern University and the University of Iowa before turning his attention to music full time.

In 1969, at the age of 24, Sanborn performed at the legendary Woodstock festival as a member of the Butterfield Blues Band. In 1972, he toured the nation as a member of Wonder’s band. In 1975, he played in the “Saturday Night Live” house band for the show’s first season. In 1989 and 1990, he hosted the eclectic NBC show, “Night Music,” which saw him play alongside everyone from Al Green, Dizzy Gillespie, Betty Wright and Joe Cocker to Latin salsa master Eddie Palmieri, Boz Scaggs and Puerto Rican cuatro player Yomo Toro.

Guitarist Eric Clapton, saxophonist David Sanborn, 11th July 1997.

“Nobody wants to take chances anymore, and that’s what this show is about. We take chances, and that’s what people respond to,” Sanborn said in a 1989 U-T interview.

“We’re trying to put on music that you wouldn’t normally see on commercial TV . We want to present an eclectic mix that also gives some historical perspective to the music so that we can give an overview that music is one continuous thread — a tree with a lot of different branches that are all entertaining.”

As a solo artist, Sanborn became a pillar of smooth-jazz in the 1980s. He managed to become one of its biggest stars while rising above the genre’s stifling restrictions and cookie-cutter formulas. The grace and grit be brought to his soulful playing enabled him to consistently shine.

“I play the kind of music that gets me off; it’s really that basic,” Sanborn told the U-T in 1995. “What gets me off are things that appeal to me on a lot of different levels. And the older I get, the more I appreciate different things. Sometimes it’s hard to reconcile all those things into one.”

In a 1996 U-T interview, Sanborn reflected on the most valuable musical lessons he learned from working with his many legendary collaborators. Here are excerpts from that conversation:

Albert King: “Phrasing and time. I was 15 years old, I wasn’t very experienced, and here was a guy who was physically imposing, to say the least, and had such a powerful presence as a musician. I’d been playing only four years, so I felt fortunate to be in his company. He didn’t throw me off the stage! He tolerated me.”

Paul Butterfield: “Again, phrasing, and sound. Paul had the best blues harp sound I’ve heard; I don’t think anyone else has come close. I learned a lot from him, about sound, using the amp, microphone technique and phrasing.”

Q: Didn’t you play the Woodstock festival with Butterfield in 1969?

A: “It was overwhelming. We were on the road, and had done a lot of gigs. Obviously, no one had any notion that we’d be playing at what turned out to be a historic event. After the fact, everyone started writing about it as a watershed event. And it was like, ‘Gee, how about that?’ When in fact, to us, it was a congregation of a half a million people in a muddy field in New York.”

Stevie Wonder: “On just a technical musical level, I learned a lot about phrasing and the way he used grace notes. I really like the way he did that as a player and a singer. Plus, he was probably the most powerful singer I’ve worked with; his talent is just prodigious. What impressed me about him is, after each gig, he’d have all these keyboards brought up to his room and he’d work all night. And he taped everything. His work ethic really inspired me; he never stopped.”

Todd Rundgren: “He’s one of those Wunderkind people who is so talented in so many areas, and so smart. He was the first musician I’d come in contact with who was a master of the (recording) studio, and that was really impressive.”

David Bowie: “I learned a lot about the theatricality of stage performance, and what an important factor that was. Because I had really come from an era of not anti-performance, but that it was not hip (to be theatrical) and that you let the music speak for itself. From Bowie, I learned that it was a valid tool to use, to whatever degree, and that it would in fact enhance the music. And he was a great songwriter and had a tremendous work ethic. He was a fountain of creativity.”

Q: Bowie told me that he really enjoyed the electronic effects you used on your sax when you played with him. How did you like them?

A: “That was imposed on me. We were in the studio, using wah-wah pedals and different kinds of effects. I always felt very intimidated by studio hardware. To be honest, learning the instrument was so hard, and staying on top of it was so time-consuming, that I felt I didn’t have time to do the other stuff.

“I’m not one of those people it comes naturally to; I have to work hard to maintain whatever ability I have. I felt a little intimidated by all the hardware —- it seemed to pull me away from the music.”

Linda Ronstadt: “Linda has a great voice, really powerful. She’s one of those people who’s innately musical. As good as people know she is, she’s even better than that. And she has an innate musicality where she just doesn’t make the wrong choices.”

James Taylor: “James is one of the great songwriters, and so prolific. What’s always been great for me, working with so many singer-songwriters, is a chance to be close to them, and having the opportunity — night after night — to hear them and see the little changes they make. To see how they approach the same songs, and how a melody could go one way or another each night.”

James Brown: “He has been such an influence on me. I was impressed by just how funky he was, where he put the notes, his power as a singer and his time. What I learned most from Stevie, James Brown and Albert King was their time — where they put notes.”

John McLaughlin: “John is just overwhelming, on the technical side and the musical side. He’s got his own take on being funky. He’ll do something that is almost perfect, and then he’ll (mess) it up in a way that’s so interesting and musical, and make it personal.”

Gil Evans: “I learned so much about melody, and the fact that — even in a large ensemble — every part can be the melody. And what’s so great about Gil’s arrangements is that, whatever part you played — even if it was fourth tenor saxophone — you really felt like a part of the music.”

Paul Shaffer: “Paul is just a wealth of musical knowledge. He’s like the encyclopedia of pop music. He seems to know every tune ever written, and has such a quick mind.”

Eric Clapton: “Eric is another one of those people that is just innately musical. All he has to do is play one note, and you know it’s him. I think that’s a mark of a real creative individual.”

Hank Crawford and David Newman: “I think early on Hank was more of an influence. But they both were, because they were both playing sax with Ray (Charles). I think, initially, Hank was more of an influence because there was a certain spareness, elegance and a cry to his sound I picked up on. His ‘From the Heart’ album, which I listened to over and over, was a huge influence.”

Q: Didn’t you use that title for one of your own albums?

A: “Yeah, but it was subconscious.”

Julius Hemphill: “What I liked about Julius was his ecumenical spirit. He was very nonjudgmental about styles, whether classical, rock, funk, jazz or Sousa marches. Whatever he could use to his benefit he would, and that attitude about music had the most profound effect on me.

“All of these people we’ve discussed, the running theme is that they had such a complete musicality. They saw music as a great universe, and not just a little window.

“Of course, people who came a generation before me would say: ‘I’m glad I came up when I did.’ It’s a matter of perspective, and it’s all a continuum. Creativity doesn’t die with a generation. There was a certain kind of openness about styles back then, and people were more willing to cross over. But musicians are always looking to cross over to other idioms. I want to avoid any implication that that time was better than this. It was great, but it was just different.”
