Cruise Hive Awards: Port Canaveral Voted Best U.S. Cruise Homeport, Set to Host 7.3 Million Passengers in 2024

BREVARD COUNTY • PORT CANAVERAL, FLORIDA – Port Canaveral once again came out on top of the Cruise Hive Cruise Ship Awards , an annual event recognizing the best in the industry.

Port Canaveral is the second busiest cruise ports in the world with more than 4.5 million cruise passengers last year, but way before becoming a major cruise port, the ocean liner Carla C paid Port Canaveral a visit in September 1979.

Carla C was the inspiration for The Love Boat, a romantic comedy/drama television series that aired on ABC from 1977 to 1986. The 20,469-gross ton vessel was a 599.7 feet long with a beam of 80.3 feet and originally launched as a French ocean liner named SS Flandre in 1952, sailing for the French Line.

By comparison, Carnival Cruise Line’s Mardi Gras, which was built at the Meyer Turku shipyard in Turku, Finland, and is a 180,000-gross-ton, 1,130-foot-long vessel with a 6,500-passenger capacity and that was slated to homeport at Port Canaveral in 2020.

A group of producers reportedly originated the idea of the popular television series “The Love Boat” and wrote the first scripts while aboard the Carla C.

Costa bought the former SS Flandre in the late 1960s, renaming it the Carla C. It was then renamed the Carla Costa and sailed to various Caribbean itineraries.

In 1992, Costa sold the ship to the now-defunct Epirotiki Line, which renamed her Pallas Athena. The vessel was scrapped after a major fire on March 23, 1994.

Carnival cancels 2 planned cruises from Port Canaveral after ship catches fire

Passengers on a Carnival cruise ship that caught fire over the weekend disembarked at Port Canaveral on Monday.

Videos sent to Ch. 9 show dark smoke and flames coming from the Carnival Freedom’s exhaust funnel on Saturday.

Carnival says lightning may be to blame.

In response to this fire, the next two cruises on the ship have been canceled.

The ship was scheduled to depart from Port Canaveral on Monday, and then again on Friday.

The fire was reported while the ship was near the Bahamas.

Passengers reported seeing lightning strike the boat, but the investigation is still underway.

Carnival Cruise Lines released the following statement:

Carnival Freedom experienced a fire in the port side of the exhaust funnel on Saturday. Our onboard team acted quickly to contain and put out the fire. While we continue to investigate multiple eyewitness reports of a lightning strike, our technical team completed a thorough assessment during the ship’s visit to Freeport today. Regrettably, the damage is more than we first thought and will require an immediate repair to stabilize the funnel, resulting in the cancellation of the March 25 and March 29 cruises from Port Canaveral.

The funnel has been stabilized for the ship’s return to Port Canaveral overnight to disembark guests, and then it will go to the Freeport shipyard on Monday afternoon to begin the required repairs.

We sincerely regret the impact to our embarking guests, as we know they have been looking forward to their spring break vacation. We are providing all guests on both cancelled cruises a full refund and a 100% future cruise credit so they can come back and enjoy a future cruise with us. We also greatly appreciate the terrific guests who are currently sailing with us, for their outstanding cooperation and support.

European cruise line Marella not coming back for second year at Port Canaveral

Marella Cruises , a European cruise line that sailed out of Port Canaveral during 2023, is not coming back this year, port officials say.

The cruise line was unique for the port. It sailed the Marella Discovery out of Port Canaveral for six months in 2023. But U.S. residents could not book a sailing on the ship. The sailings were just for people who booked a flight from Europe to Melbourne Orlando International Airport on an affiliated airline, TUI Airways. Both Marella and TUI Airways are part of the TUI Group, a major international travel company.

Port Canaveral CEO John Murray said the Marella Discovery was scheduled to sail only during 2023 out of Port Canaveral before switching to other itineraries. He said there were no issues between the port and the cruise line that triggered Marella to not sail from Port Canaveral this year.

The Marella Discovery had a total of 28 sailings out of Port Canaveral from May to November 2023, with a total of 85,533 passengers getting on or off the ship. Most of the sailings were seven nights in duration.

There were various itineraries from Port Canaveral. A typical one was called "American Dream," with stops in Charleston, South Carolina; New York City; and Freeport, Bahamas.

TUI's business model is to sell full-scale travel packages. So the cruise was part of a package that includes a flight from a United Kingdom airport to Melbourne Orlando International Airport. Some packages had an option to add a hotel stay in Florida.

The Marella Discovery currently is sailing seven-night "Ottoman Odyssey" cruises in the Eastern Mediterranean, sailing out of Marmaris, Turkey.

Marella Cruises is a relatively small cruise line, with five ships in operation.

The Marella Discovery also is relatively small, compared with some of the megaships based at Port Canaveral. The Discovery has 915 cabins; a double-occupancy capacity of 1,830 passengers; and a full capacity of 2,076 passengers. It is 866 feet long and has a gross tonnage of 69,130 tons.

It has sailed under various names over the years. It initially sailed for Royal Caribbean International as the Splendour of the Seas, starting in 1996. The ship was refurbished in 2016, after being acquired by TUI.

Port's cruise business booming

Despite not having a Marella ship in port this year, Port Canaveral's cruise business is going gangbusters.

For the first seven months of the current budget year (October 2023 through April 2024), the port's total cruise revenue, including from cruise passenger parking, is $92.43 million, which is $2.12 million above budget. During that time, there have been 553 cruise ship calls and 4.52 million multiday passengers getting on or off those ships.

Port Canaveral is the world's second-busiest cruise port. Five cruise lines base ships at Port Canaveral — Carnival, Disney, MSC, Norwegian and Royal Caribbean. Celebrity and Princess will add ships to the Port Canaveral lineup later this year.

A total of 21 multiday cruise ships will be based at Port Canaveral during at least part of this year.

TUI continues to fly to Melbourne

Despite not having a Marella ship at Port Canaveral, TUI is continuing its flights into and out of Melbourne Orlando International Airport for a third straight year in 2024.

The airport reported that a total of 242,542 passengers got on or off international flights in Melbourne in 2022, and 231,472 did so in 2023. The airport does not report passenger totals by airline, but airport officials said the vast majority of those were TUI passengers.

TUI's Melbourne service originates from English cities of Birmingham, London (London-Gatwick airport), Manchester and Newcastle, along with Belfast, Northern Ireland, and Glasgow, Scotland. This year's TUI flights started March 18, and will run through Oct. 26.

In 2025, TUI will add a new departure city for its flights to Melbourne — Dublin, Ireland.

The international travel giant flies U.K. travelers to U.S. destinations aboard Boeing 787 Dreamliners via vacation packages. The airline does not offer tickets for Melbourne passengers to fly to Europe.

15+ Hotels With Cruise Shuttles Between Orlando and Port Canaveral

If you are flying into Orlando for a cruise from Port Canaveral, then you are going to need to figure out how to get to your ship. The port is about 45 minutes away from the Orlando International Airport (MCO), which is the closest major airport to the cruise terminals.

The good news is that as one of the busiest ports in America, there are a number of options to get to the cruise terminal. From Uber to shuttles, you can easily make your way to the Port Canaveral/Cocoa Beach area .

But perhaps no way of getting to the port is as convenient as an Orlando hotel near the airport with a cruise shuttle. As a way of winning your business, many spots near the airport offer a free shuttle to their hotel after you arrive from your flight. And then after your stay, they can help you with a shuttle ride to Port Canaveral (for a fee).

This way you don’t have to worry how you are going to get to the hotel from the airport or to the cruise ship on the day you sail. (A number of hotels in Port Canaveral also offer cruise shuttles if you prefer to stay closer to your ship.)

How Airport and Cruise Shuttles Work for Orlando Hotels

Airport Shuttles : Most of the hotels below work in a similar way. They offer free shuttles between the airport and the hotel that run either 24 hours per day, or at all times except for a few hours in the middle of the night.

You’ll want to get all your luggage and only then call the hotel. They will direct you on where to go to catch your ride. Since all the hotels below are right near the Orlando airport, the ride should only take 5-10 minutes.

Port Canaveral Shuttles : Given the distance, the vast majority of hotels don’t have their own shuttle to the port. Instead, cruise passengers can arrange a ride with a third-party shuttle provider if staying at a hotel near the airport. So you book the hotel and then contact the shuttle company to book your ride . The shuttle will pick you up right at the hotel to take you to the port. They will also give you a ride back for your flight when you return. 

Expect the shuttle to run roughly $50-70 per person, round trip. The following companies offer pickup at the hotels near the airport.

Orlando Hotels With Cruise Shuttle Pickup & Airport Shuttles

The following hotels sit near the Orlando airport and offer a shuttle between your flight and their location. To get to the cruise port, they either offer a shuttle package, or you can arrange a pick-up from one of the companies mentioned above.

Hyatt Place Orlando Airport With a regular shuttle from the Orlando International airport, free wi-fi, and pool, there is a lot to like about the Hyatt Place. Maybe that’s why it sees an average review rating of 4.5 out of 5. To get to the port you can use their “Cruise to Port Canaveral” package . This offers a ride for two (a package for four is also available) round trip from the hotel to Port Canaveral, along with parking while you’re gone if you need it.

Hampton Inn & Suites Orlando Airport @ Gateway Village Hampton Inn seems to universally earn great reviews from guests, and this edition is no different, earning a rating of 4.5 out of 5. It’s among the closest hotels to the airport, and should only take you five minutes to get there with the free airport shuttle. Of course you get all the goodies like free wi-fi and breakfast as well. Then, the shuttle companies listed earlier can pick you up at the hotel and get you to the ship.

Residence Inn Orlando Airport Highly rated, there’s a lot to like about the Residence Inn, including that it’s just minutes away from your flight and has a free airport shuttle. It also serves free breakfast, has wi-fi, and even offers more space with full kitchens. Convenient, comfortable, and with easy access to the port, it’s hard to go wrong with this spot.

SpringHill Suites Orlando Airport Affordable, clean, and offering full suites instead of just rooms (great for families), SpringHill can also take care of your transportation needs. They offer a complementary ride to and from the hotel and your flight. As for Port Canaveral, you can book a room package through GoPort ($40 per person, one way), or simply book the shuttle alone from one of the companies mentioned above.

Wingate by Wyndham Orlando International Airport An affordable hotel, the Wingate is minutes from the airport and near a number of restaurants and shops. With free rides to and from the airport and free breakfast, you can settle in after your flight and leave for the cruise ship with a nice meal. 

In addition, the hotel offers a “Stay and Cruise” package . This includes your room plus round trip shuttle for guests to/from Port Canaveral.

Marriott Orlando Airport Lakeside This Marriott offers up a strong review rating and includes a 24-hour complimentary shuttle between MCO and the hotel. It also sits right between two small lakes, so despite being near the airport, it can feel like a much more relaxing environment. Best of all, with its location near other hotels and the airport, all the major shuttle companies will offer service between this Marriott and Port Canaveral.

Cambria Hotel Orlando Airport How convenient is this Cambria hotel? It sits right across Highway 528 — also known as the Beachline Expressway from the Orlando airport. The Beachline runs a straight shot to Port Canaveral. The hotel offers an airport shuttle from 6 a.m. to midnight. To get to the cruise port, services like GoPort and other providers can get you there with a convenient pickup. The ride would take about 45 minutes to an hour.

Ramada Suites Orlando Airport Just five minutes from the airport, the Ramada Suites offers a free airport shuttle that runs from 4:30 a.m. to 1:00 a.m. for guests. In addition, they offer nice perks like free wi-fi and breakfast, as well as an outdoor pool and fitness center. While the hotel offered a shuttle before the health crisis (and may again in the future), for now it’s not difficult to simply book a separate shuttle through one of the companies listed above.

Sheraton Suites Orlando Airport Next door to the Ramada and only minutes from your flight, the Sheraton Suites offers a resort-style pool in its protected courtyard, giving you a piece of vacation before you start your cruise. There’s a free shuttle from the airport, and while you would need to arrange your own transportation to Port Canaveral at this time via the providers mentioned above, the hotel sits practically a straight shot from the cruise port.

Embassy Suites Orlando Airport Embassy Suites is known for its high level of service, and this location is no different, earning a 4.5 out of five in reviews. It’s only five minutes from the airport, and offers a free shuttle back and forth. As for the cruise port, that ride will take about 45 minutes. You can either book your own transportation, for around $40 one-way.

Homewood Suites Orlando Airport Just minutes from the airport with a sun-drenched pool and near lots of restaurants, there’s a lot to like about the Homewood Suites. It’s highly rated (4.5/5), pet-friendly, and has a free shuttle to and from the airport. GoPort offers a shuttle between the hotel, cruise port, and then back to the airport for around $70 per person.

La Quinta Orlando Airport North Free breakfast, wi-fi, gym, and pool come standard, in addition to the airport shuttle (5 a.m. to 8 p.m.). Meanwhile you are in the middle of a group of hotels that are close to the airport, as well as a number of restaurants. Need a ride to the port? The major shuttle companies will offer pickup here, making it a breeze to get to the ship on cruise day.

Holiday Inn Orlando International Airport Sitting just a mile from the airport, it won’t take you long to get from your flight to the hotel. With the shuttle you’ll have a ride whenever you arrive in Orlando. Sailing with kids? Those 18 and under stay free and kids 11 and under eat free at the hotel’s restaurant. Given the location, booking a ride from one of the many shuttle companies to the cruise port would be no issue.

Courtyard Orlando Airport Within walking distance of restaurants, highly rated, and with free wi-fi and free shuttle between the hotel and airport, there’s a lot to like about this hotel. Time to go to the port? It’s about 45 minutes away. You can arrange a third-party shuttle via services like Cortrans or Port Canaveral Quick Shuttle that can get you there and then to the airport once the cruise is over.

Staybridge Suites: Orlando Airport South Traveling with a family? Then a spot like this Staybridge Suites may be idea as the hotel features larger rooms ideal for sleeping more than two people. Sitting just 1.5 miles from the Orlando airport, it’s not far from plane to hotel and the 24-hour airport shuttle can pick you up. Plus, the Monday-Wednesday social has free food, beer, wine, and soda.

Avid Hotel Orlando A relatively new hotel, this spot is ideal if you just want something simple and convenient before your cruise. Free breakfast, free wi-fi, and a complimentary shuttle between the hotel and airport? No wonder the no-fuss hotel is getting good reviews. Come cruise day, companies like Go Port can pick you up at the hotel and get you to your ship with no issue.

Port Canaveral Hotels With Orlando Airport Shuttles

The advantage of staying in Port Canaveral is that you are closer to your ship. The drawback is that it’s a longer day of travel if you are flying into Orlando and then heading out to the port area. Still, if you want to stay in Port Canaveral, there are a handful of hotels that offer shuttles between the Orlando airport and the hotel. These hotels also offer a shuttle to the cruise port.

Radisson Resort at the Port As with many hotels in the area, the Radisson caters to cruisers. But not every hotel can offer the resort style feel and attractions of the Radisson, such as the large pool with waterfall.

The Radisson is ideal for those flying into Orlando as they offer a fee-based shuttle between the airport and hotel. The cost is $28 per person one-way or $50 round trip. This can actually be less expensive than some shuttle services. From the hotel there’s also a shuttle to the cruise ship for $6 per person.

Springhill Suites Cape Canaveral A new hotel in the area, this location puts you about as close to the cruise port as you can get. Traveling with a family? This hotel is nice as it also offers suites that provide more elbow room.

At the time of this writing, the hotel offers airport transportation for $28 per person one way or $50 round trip. On cruise day you can get a ride to the port for just $10.80 per person. You will simply let the hotel know at least 48 hours before check-in that you’ll need a ride and they can arrange to get you to the ship.

Beachside Hotel & Suites Situated in the heart of Cocoa Beach, Beachside Hotel & Suites is right near the water and only a 10-minute ride to the cruise terminal. In other words, the location is ideal for anyone wanting to spend some time in the area before their cruise. The hotel was recently renovated and now includes a large lazy river pool and updated rooms.

The hotel’s website says it offers airport shuttle and cruise shuttle packages. This includes a “Fly, Snooze & Cruise” deal that includes round trip service to/from the Orlando airport and a transfer to the terminal.

Four Points by Sheraton Cocoa Beach Located right in the heart of Cocoa Beach, the Four Points is within walking distance to parks, restaurants, the beach, and the famous Ron Jon Surf Shop. If you’re planning to spend some time enjoying the beach, it’s a great spot.

The hotel website has a Fly, Snooze, and Cruise deal that includes round trip transportation from/to the Orlando airport and the hotel. It also includes the ride to the port on cruise day.

Cocoa Beach Suites This hotel is an easy 2-minute walk to the beach. If you fly into Orlando International, then the airport offers transportation options. Specifically, they offer a “Snooze and Cruise” deal . With this package you get transportation for two from the airport (Orlando, but Melbourne and Sanford are also available), transportation to the ship, and then back to the airport.
