Where To Watch The Entire Star Trek Franchise

Captain Christopher Pike looks forward

It's been nearly 60 years since a little science fiction show called "Star Trek" premiered on NBC. Since then, Gene Roddenberry's experiment has grown and flourished into one of the most successful media franchises in history, spanning no fewer than 12 television series and 13 motion pictures, not to mention helping to establish modern genre fandom as we currently understand it.

At the time of writing, there are also more "Star Trek" shows currently in production than there have ever been at any time in history. Whether we want to revisit the same characters and period of time as the original series with "Strange New Worlds," say farewell to Admiral Jean-Luc Picard (Patrick Stewart), or gaze even further into a wrecked future with "Star Trek: Discovery" (whose upcoming  fifth season will be its last ), there are countless opportunities to go where no one has gone before. And this isn't even counting the two animated series, "Prodigy" and "Lower Decks."

Each new "Star Trek" fan, however, has a rather significant challenge in front of them — that is, to familiarize themselves with the events and lore that have already taken place in previous shows and films, to better understand what happens now. Luckily, we've already compiled a handy guide for the order to view all the "Star Trek" franchises in. But where exactly does one find each and every title on this admittedly long list?

All the TV series are available on Paramount Plus

When it comes to all of the various television iterations of "Star Trek," it is fairly straightforward. Viewers can find all of them on Paramount+, from the original series (including the first pilot, "The Cage," featuring Jeffrey Hunter as Christopher Pike captaining the Enterprise instead of William Shatner's Kirk) up through the current "Star Trek: Discovery," "Strange New Worlds," and "Picard." This also includes the series that originally aired from the late 1980s up through the early aughts: "The Next Generation," "Deep Space Nine," "Voyager," and "Enterprise."

The streamer is also host to all of the animated entries in the "Star Trek" pantheon, including the first animated version that aired in the 1970s, and "Star Trek: Lower Decks." Paramount+ also carries "Star Trek: Prodigy," though episodes air on Nickelodeon first before they arrive on the streamer. "Short Treks," the series of short standalone stories that provide more in-depth exploration into the worlds of "Discovery," "Picard," and "Strange New Worlds," is also available there.

Like we said, it's straightforward — at least for all the entries into the franchise that are or were televised at one point. When it comes to the motion pictures, however, it gets a bit more complicated.

Star Trek movies are found on different streamers

Let's start with the movies related to the original series, which follow the likes of Captain Kirk, Mr. Spock (Leonard Nimoy), Lieutenant Uhura (Nichelle Nichols) and the rest of the original crew of the USS Enterprise. In all, six movies were made that focused on this crew, starting with "Star Trek: The Motion Picture" in 1979 and ending with "Star Trek VI: The Undiscovered Country" in 1991. Though none are available to watch on Paramount+ along with their televised cousins, they are available on HBO Max.

Next are the four movies that revolved primarily around the characters of "The Next Generation," from Captain Picard and Commander William Riker (Jonathan Frakes) to Lieutenants LaForge (LeVar Burton) and Data (Brent Spiner). These are also all available to stream on HBO Max, starting with 1994's "Star Trek Generations" — which served as a kind of passing of the movie mantle from the cast of the original series to that of "TNG" — through 2002's "Star Trek: Nemesis."

Finally, there's the Kelvin timeline , J.J. Abrams' split timeline with fresh takes on Kirk (Chris Pine), Spock (Zachary Quinto), Uhura (Zoe Saldana), and all the rest. All three of those films — "Star Trek," "Star Trek Into Darkness," and "Star Trek Beyond" — are available back on Paramount+.

How To Watch Every ‘Star Trek’ Movie and TV Show

Where to stream:, ‘star trek iii’ at 40: the story of how (and why) leonard nimoy brought spock back after being killed off in ‘the wrath of khan’, ‘star trek: strange new worlds’ renewed for season 4 at paramount+, bill maher applauds william shatner for controversial ‘star trek’ interracial kiss, patrick stewart was asked to wear a wig at his ‘star trek’ audition — a wig that flew by itself from heathrow to lax.

Since 1966, Star Trek has boldy gone where no man had gone before, and to this day, that mission continues.

What started as one three-season TV series 57 years ago has morphed into over 10 shows and 13 movies, which explore, in addition to the original series’ timeline, an alternate one that serves as a soft reboot on the franchise as a whole.

The legacy of Star Trek begins with William Shatner and Leonard Nimoy , who left their mark on pop culture with their portrayals of Captain James T. Kirk and Mr. Spock, and even today, we’re still seeing iconic actors leave their mark on the franchise — Patrick Stewart returned as Captain Jean-Luc Picard in the Paramount+ original series Star Trek: Picard after 18 years away from the role. The third and final season of Picard began airing on February 16.

Below, we’ve broken down where you can watch every Star Trek movie and TV show, both on streaming services and paid video on-demand platforms, along with details on how the various timelines and which shows and movies fall into them.

Where To Watch Star Trek TV Shows

Unlike the films, all Star Trek TV series including all three animated series exist within the same timeline, even though they weren’t released in timeline order. The Original Series falls just about in the middle of the timeline.

A few of the series, including Enterprise , Discovery , and Strange New Worlds are technically prequels to The Original Series, so they take place before it in the timeline, while The Next Generation , Deep Space Nine , and Voyager all take place in the years following the end of TOS.

Where to watch Star Trek Movies

The final three movies in the Star Trek franchise (the ones starring Chris Pine as Captain Kirk and Zachary Quinto as Spock) are the only ones that don’t take place in the same timeline as the TV shows and their corresponding movies — the first six movies star The Original Series cast, while the next four take place during Next Gen.

Pine and Quinto’s movies take place in an alternate original series timeline, known as the Kelvin timeline because the inciting incident that changes the timeline is a critical failure aboard the USS Kelvin. While everything else in the Star Trek timeline is co-dependent to a degree, these three movies stand alone as an isolated trilogy.

The making of "Star Trek: Generations."

star trek generations hbo max

“The line must be drawn here!”

You need to watch the most thrilling Star Trek movie on HBO Max ASAP

Out of all the Trek movies, this one set the stage for the mix of sci-fi ideas and action thrills that has since defined the franchise.

An action-filled Star Trek movie opens at the top of the box office and receives praise from critics, reaching an audience beyond devoted Star Trek fans and delivering an effects-driven spectacle. It’s not one of the movies from the J.J. Abrams-led reboot trilogy, though. Released in 1996, it’s the second big-screen adventure for the cast of Star Trek: The Next Generation , firmly establishing that Star Trek can thrive on the silver screen without the stars of the original series, and setting the subsequent course for both the Abrams movies and the current Star Trek streaming shows.

Star Trek: First Contact , which just hit HBO Max, still holds up as a franchise high point, and its themes and narrative threads have resonated through recent episodes of Star Trek: Picard and Star Trek: Lower Decks . It’s the best movie to feature the Next Generation cast, balancing character development with an epic battle against a formidable enemy. The Borg have become a bit less threatening in their subsequent appearances on Picard , but in First Contact they’re terrifying, the closest that a Star Trek alien race has ever been to horror-movie monsters.

Like another excellent Star Trek movie, 1982’s Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan , First Contact builds on plot elements from a TV episode, opening with a flashback to the time Jean-Luc Picard (Patrick Stewart) spent assimilated by the Borg collective. Picard’s abduction still haunts him, so when the cybernetic aliens mount a new attack on the Federation, he’s furious that the Enterprise is ordered to stay out of the action. There’s real anguish on the faces of Picard and his crew as they listen to transmissions from outmatched Starfleet vessels. Of course, Picard disobeys orders and heads for Earth.

Once there, the Enterprise discovers the Borg have made a desperate effort to avoid defeat by sending a ship back in time to assimilate Earth’s population. The Enterprise follows, determined to stop the Borg from rewriting history. They end up in 2063, on the day before humanity is set to make first contact with the Vulcans. In the aftermath of a Borg attack, Enterprise crew members must help engineer Zefram Cochrane (James Cromwell) launch his ship and keep his rendezvous with history.

Star Trek: First Contact

On the Enterprise, Picard leads the fight against the Borg.

Meanwhile, the Borg have infiltrated the Enterprise. On Earth, Commander William Riker (Jonathan Frakes), Lt. Commander Geordi La Forge (LeVar Burton), and Counselor Deanna Troi (Marina Sirtis) help Cochrane ready his ship, while on the Enterprise, Captain Picard leads the fight against the Borg.

The Earthbound story is much more lighthearted, with Cromwell playing Cochrane as an irascible rummy who’s horrified to learn that he’ll become a revered historical figure. There’s little room for levity on the Enterprise, where the android Lt. Commander Data (Brent Spiner) is held captive by the disturbing Borg Queen (Alice Krige), and multiple crew members meet grisly fates as the Borg assimilate them. Frakes, making his feature directorial debut after helming numerous episodes of various Star Trek TV series, keeps the tones balanced, and the stakes feel equally high in each storyline.

Star Trek: First Contact

Data is held captive by the Borg Queen.

High-stakes adventure is what’s come to define modern Star Trek , but it still feels fresh in First Contact , both for the future of humanity and for the lives of the individual characters. First Contact is a fantastic acting showcase for Stewart, who spends much of the movie paired with Alfre Woodard as Cochrane’s associate Lily Sloane. Picard’s fiery tirade against the Borg, declaring, “The line must be drawn here!” is one of Star Trek ’s most iconic moments, and it’s Lily who’s on the receiving end. Befitting the high-minded Picard, she only breaks through his defensiveness about the Borg via a literary reference, comparing him to Captain Ahab.

First Contact excels at that mix of refined intellectualism and thrilling spectacle, moving from rousing speeches about the nobility of exploration to suspenseful confrontations between Starfleet and the Borg. A scene of Picard, Lt. Commander Worf (Michael Dorn), and obvious cannon fodder Lt. Hawk (Neal McDonough) taking a spacewalk along the hull of the Enterprise to sabotage a Borg communications device is as tense as any action sequence in the bigger-budget Abrams movies. It also benefits from what comes before, building on the dynamic between Picard and Worf that was developed over seven seasons of the Next Generation TV series.

First Contact is full of references and cameos for dedicated Star Trek fans, but it’s never a self-congratulatory tribute to past continuity. Like all the best Star Trek , it’s a bold journey into the future, both of the galaxy and the franchise.

Star Trek: First Contact is now streaming on HBO Max .

Max has also confirmed this same set of movies are exiting on May 31, making Paramount+ the exclusive home for the movies, at least in the short term. Paramount+ currently features the three Kelvin-verse movies ( Star Trek 2009, Star Trek Into Darkness , and Star Trek Beyond ). June will mark the first time all thirteen movies have been available on the service at the same time in over a year.

From Star Trek: First Contact

Paramount+ first had the full Trek movie collection back in 2021 . Unlike how Paramount Global has made a point of holding the exclusive streaming rights of Star Trek television shows, both legacy and Paramount Plus originals, they have continued to licence the feature films to other streaming services. Throughout 2022 various Trek films would exit the service for months at a time until the mass move to HBO Max at the end of 2022. It isn’t known if there are any deals in place that will see any Star Trek movies exit Paramount+ again in the coming months or if the streaming service will finally become home to the full franchise, as Disney has done with the Star Wars movies and television series.

They are kicking things off on June 16 with a 32-hour Star Trek marathon of movies and documentaries. They are also giving away T-shirts and there is a costume contest. Podcast: All Access Goes To The ‘Star Trek: Discovery’ Season 5 Junket And Breaks Down That ‘Variety’ Article

Streaming is convenient for sure, but I’m happy I own the films in physical formats.

I use the streaming if I want to watch random episodes, but I treasure my Trek physical media. The upgraded Blu Ray discs on the 4K film releases even deliver above and beyond the 2009 Blu ray discs.

Any true Star Trek fan should already own physical copies of these.

While I value physical media for myself, I take exception to gatekeeping definitions of what makes a ‘true Star Trek’ fan.

Any true Star Trek fan should not gatekeep the definition of a “true Star Trek fan.”

Was I being ironic or a hypocrite? Sorry either way.

If you don’t value the same format as I do, you’re not only NOT a Star Trek Fan, you are a TERRIBLE human being. You need to have the incredibly inconvenient, space filling, easily damaged discs to watch MY shows the way I want you to.

With what money and what space

I’m happy having all trek I want on disc because of the noticeable better quality. The only downside is that the TNG episodes on the blu ray discs (for example S4E3, S5E22, S6E4) are NOT the fixed versions! The streaming versions are fixed.

What were the issues with those episodes on the discs?

S4E3 the blue alert is red in one scene, S5E22 you can see the blue screen in the ten forward windows when troi and the girl leaving ten forward (2 times, also a few sec later when they passing the second doors) S6E4 you see a starfield INSIDE of the dyson sphere next to the sun…

I think these a minor issues. What is a bit annoying is that sometimes double-episodes are distributed on differect discs. Also a minor issue, but it would be nice to have them on one disc as single-episodes in movie length. Remember the TNG-movie-DVD-Box? (Yes, that box, which started to dissolve…) It would be nice to have it on blu-ray as part of the series box, not separately.

Yes, I want all 2-parter in feature length presentation as well since very long now!!

I’m intrigued to hear more about the dissolving box now, please :)

In an ideal world, if a specific studio has a streaming service, people would be able to expect that it would be the forever home of that studio’s libraries and original content. With stuff like this where the studio’s catalog movies are very transient, and Disney and Warner now removing their own new content produced specifically for their services, it really makes the whole streaming thing a bummer. We’ll see how long all these services all last, but when you are both removing content and increasing prices it isn’t a great combo.

I’m looking forward to picking up the remastered UHDs sometime this year to own the best versions of these physically.

Exactly this was kind of the promise of these streaming services that anything owned by that studio would be exclusive to that site. That was part of the appeal to subscribing to know something will always be there.

But you as mentioned, that is turning out not to be the case as the studios have all recognized that idea is actually costing them money in the end when they can’t spread their IPs out to other services and make money that way. But it’s really annoying for people subscribed to these sites. And I notice there are now tons of Paramount+ properties on other services, mainly on Amazon. None of the original shows (ie, made exclusively for the site) has gone anywhere else yet, so far, but a lot of Paramount movies and shows have made it to other places now.

I won’t be shocked though if the classic shows, TOS-ENT, ends up back on other streamers again. I don’t think Paramount+ will ever lose them again, especially since the TV library is what they are focused on and building on, but they probably see how much money they can make putting them back on sites instead of just being exclusive to one.

It would be nice to have them ALL HD-remastered.

This news doesn’t affect anyone who owns the physical media.

I own most of the Trek movies on physical media (only missing two). However, if I can easily find it on streaming, I’d rather do that. It’s so convenient!

I don’t find the streaming all that convenient. It’s far more of a hassle to go and select the service then deal with their irritating menus than it is to just grab my disc and pop it in the player. And I get the high quality sound that streaming doesn’t deliver. I find the discs are still superior in every useful way.

I guess you’re right. I only have a basic Blu Ray player and TV speakers, so maybe that’s why it’s basically the same for me.

I hope this means we’ll also get the Director’s Cuts of Star Trek II & VI on P+, as those were on (HBO) Max.

And on the special DVD-Edition 20 years ago…

I slowllly worked my way through the TOS-TNG movies on my Paramount Plus Canada sub all year and I just noticed this month that TOS 1, 3-6 and all 4 TNG movies are gone (I finished TNG Nemesis about a week before Picard S3 hit). Right now it has the Kelvin movies and Wrath of Khan on Paramount Plus Canada. I’m so confused. But right now only got Beyond to go to have a full movie series rewatch but it’s weird that 9 of the movies just evaporated and I can’t find them streaming anywhere else in Canada.

Feels like they did this just for the press. One set of press stories for them being removed & another for them coming baclpk.

I’ve seen them. Even the TNG efforts.

So I realize I’m just spitballing here, but if Paramount+ does decide to let another streaming service have access to Star Trek again, perhaps it should come with a condition. If you want to carry Trek, help fund future shows or remastering efforts for existing Trek.

More realistic I think to come at it from the angle of, “We’ve remastered the SD shows, pay us more for them.”

If Star Trek is going to HBO Max, what’s the point of Paramount+?

By chad porto | oct 28, 2022.

NEW YORK, NEW YORK - OCTOBER 08: (L-R) LeVar Burton, Patrick Stewart and Jonathan Frakes speak onstage at the Star Trek Universe panel during New York Comic Con on October 08, 2022 in New York City. (Photo by Eugene Gologursky/Getty Images for Paramount+)

Star Trek is sending its films to HBO Max for a while, so why bother with Paramount+?

The whole point of streaming services is to provide entertainment for a monthly price. Most, if not all, streaming platforms are propped up by a tentpole franchise. Disney+ has a lot, being Marvel, and Star Wars, HBO Max has DC Comics, Peacock has the WWE, Amazon has free shipping and Apple+ is lucky we let it exist.

Give us more Ted Lasso and shut the hell up.

For Paramount+, it’s Star Trek. Sure, they have some other content, most notably the iCarly revival and Yellowstone, but that’s it. And to be fair, Yellowstone is losing its luster. So it’s mostly doubling, tripling, and quadrupling down on Star Trek.

Now, Star Trek is everywhere. All five of the first live-action series air back to back to back to back to back every Sunday through Friday on Heroes and Icons, while The Next Generation has a 24/7 streaming channel on Pluto TV. Both of those outlets are free, however. If you want the on-demand goodness that Trek has to offer, from past shows to the movies to the new content, you’d have to go to Paramount+.

Until now. Paramount+ is once again leasing out parts of the Star Trek catalog to a rival outfit in HBO Max. This has many, including myself wondering, what is the point of Paramount+ then?

Star Trek is the biggest reason to get Paramount+ for many

Paramount+ has no real reason to exist if it isn’t the exclusive home for Star Trek. It makes no real sense, beyond monetary, why Paramount+ would lease out their films. If you’re trying to cater to Trek fans and you’re trying to show them this is where it pays to be, then why give way a portion of what fans want?

The films. All of the original series and TNG films are now on HBO Max, with Star Trek: Beyond on AMC at the moment. Meaning Paramount+ only has Star Trek 2009 and Into Darkness for Trek fans to watch.

The problem is, despite all of Paramount+’s proclamations, it doesn’t offer much. If you’re an NFL fan or a lover of soccer, you’re covered. But that’s it. It would make more sense for them to keep the Trek films on its site while merging with its other site, Showtime.

Both are owned by ViacomCBS, and both provide separate catalogs. If any other streaming platform was going to carry Star Trek films, you’d think it’d be Showtime, not HBO Max.

If they’re not going to be the exclusive home for all things Star Trek, Paramount+ should start leasing out everything. Give a first-run show to Nickelodeon, or SyFy. Give a movie or two to Peacock. Break free from just Bad Robot and let other studios develop their own Trek.

If you’re not going to keep it all in-house, let other voices have a say in making a show or film.

Warner Bros. Wants You to Think of HBO Before Max Again

A graphic released along with the series announcement for HBO Original series Lanterns.

Eagle-eyed observers might have noticed the change with today’s announcement that Lanterns, a drama series based on DC’s Green Lanterns characters , is officially getting an eight-episode series order at HBO. That’s right: HBO at the forefront, instead of being labeled as a “Max Original” for the oft-renamed HBO streaming service .

Warner Bros. was designating DC shows as “Max Originals” rather than “HBO Originals” as late as last week, when the latest trailer for The Penguin dropped . But there’s been a shift in the branding, according to a report in Variety that HBO and Max content CEO Casey Bloys is “moving most of Max’s upcoming big-budget, tentpole Warner Bros. IP projects to under the HBO umbrella.”

This shift covers shows releasing in 2025 and beyond—so 2024 releases The Penguin and Dune: Prophecy are both expected to still be labeled as Max shows; “the process of licensing [The Penguin] internationally has already started,” Bloys explained. But once the calendar turns over, look for Lanterns, Stephen King-inspired It prequel series Welcome to Derry, and the Harry Potter series that WB is insistent upon making to fall under that HBO Originals banner.

This switch undoes the previous intention to keep all shows based on WB properties under the Max Originals label, and it came about when Bloys and other execs realized the WB shows weren’t all that different from HBO’s own creations. “As we started producing those shows, we were using the same methods, the same kind of thinking, as how we would approach HBO shows,” he told Variety, noting that there’s even crossover between talent, such as Watchmen’s Damon Lindelof now working on Lanterns. “The idea of the delineation kind of started to feel unnecessary ... Let’s just call them what they are: HBO shows.”

What does that mean for viewers? Not a lot. It means that if you see an HBO Original being marketed, it will get the perceived prestige of being on the HBO linear channel; all HBO shows will still stream on Max. Max-only series will still exist, but they’ll be “more in the broadcast/traditional TV vein” and will have more scaled-down budgets compared to the HBO shows. When asked why the company doesn’t just make every show an HBO show, which would be the least confusing way forward, Bloys said, “I do think it is helpful to have a brand that doesn’t put the expectations or the intention of an HBO show. If it’s not designed to do that, it shouldn’t have to.”

Make of that what you will. The Penguin, perhaps the last of the DC Max Originals, arrives September 8.
