Hosted You’re accompanied by a Tour Manager part of the time, for some guided excursions. The rest of the time, you’re at leisure to explore the destination your own way.

  • Your extension begins with an overnight stay in Lima.
  • Lima - Puerto Maldonado - Peruvian Amazon Basin

After a welcome lunch, take a walk through the Concepción trails and learn about the rainforest’s composition, its uses, the human impact and its relevance to the world climate. At dusk, once again take to the water on a motorized canoe. Your evening excursion will teach you about the river’s ecosystem, Amazonian creeks, nocturnal animals’ behavior and the southern sky’s constellations. Then, you'll enjoy a delightful dinner in the Casa Grande’s dining room.
  • Tambopata National Reserve - Lake Sandoval

After lunch, the Inkaterra canopy walkway awaits. Begin at the Interpretation Center to learn about the project. Then ascend 98 feet in the air and cross a series of hanging bridges that connect the treetops, taking in the breathtaking panoramas and discovering the wildlife that surrounds you. This evening, explore the Amazon rainforest by moonlight and listen to the unique nocturnal sounds of the rainforest. Your day concludes with a wonderful dinner.

Our Machu Picchu Tours and Vacations

Often referred to as the “Lost City of the Incas”, Machu Picchu is located in the Cusco region of Peru. One of the most impressive ancient sites in the world, Machu Picchu is an icon of the Inca civilization and, on a Peru vacation, remains the country's most popular tourist destination.

Machu Picchu was built around 1450 AD, at the height of the Incan Empire. It is believed that the area was constructed as an estate for Pachacuti, an emperor who ruled from 1438-1472. The site was abandoned just over 100 years later at the time of the Spanish conquest in 1572.

Despite settling in nearby Cusco, the Spanish never discovered Machu Picchu and the site eventually became overrun by the surrounding jungle. American historian Hiram Bingham discovered the site in 1911 and made it known to the outside world.

Machu Picchu Hike

In 1981, Peru declared the area a Historical Sanctuary and in 1983, UNESCO named it a World Heritage Site because it served “as a unique testimony to the Inca civilization”. In order to conserve the area, entrance restrictions were put in place in 2011, but this has done nothing to diminish Machu Picchu’s immense popularity. People come from around the world to hike the famous Inca Trail on Peru tours and to come face to face with the past in this magical and iconic site.

Machu Picchu is one of the world's most famous landmarks. Book one of our Machu Picchu tours today and be awed by this spectacular site. You won't be disappointed.

Machu Picchu Cruise Guide

If you love cruising and have always wanted to visit Machu Picchu, you’re in luck. Cruising is a great way to visit the famed Incan site, though not many people realize a Machu Picchu cruise vacation is possible, since the landmark is nestled far within the Andes Mountains.

On a South America cruise that sails to Peru, strategically planned ports of call in Lima with multiple overnights offer you the opportunity to do a land excursion to Machu Picchu. In addition, Machu Picchu can be visited as part of our Galapagos Islands cruise vacations.

Visit the Legendary Incan Landmark on a Machu Picchu Cruise

A Machu Picchu cruise takes you to some of the most epic scenery and ancient ruins in South America. In addition to visiting Machu Picchu, which was named one of the new seven wonders of the world, you’ll also see the breathtaking peaks and valleys of the Andes mountain range and the towns and cities nestled among it.

Machu Picchu

No surprise here—seeing Machu Picchu with your own eyes and exploring the ruins is the top highlight of a Machu Picchu cruise! During your walking tour, you’ll learn more about the construction of the site and what various buildings were used for.

In addition to traveling to Machu Picchu during a multi-day excursion, you’ll spend time in Cusco, a handsome city often used as the jumping-off point for travelers visiting the ruins. Cusco also has delicious restaurants, vibrant squares, and great shopping.

Llamas and Alpacas

You’re likely to see several llamas and possibly even an alpaca or two while walking around Machu Picchu and Cusco. The long-necked animals makes for a fun photo op, especially with the ruins of Machu Picchu in the background.

Featured Machu Picchu Cruise Ports

Pisco and Lima are the cruise ports that provide excursions to Machu Picchu. In addition, cruisers to the Galapagos Islands can include an escorted tour as part of their vacation package that visits Cusco and Machu Picchu after their Galapagos cruise ends.

Pisco (San Martin), Peru

Lima, (Callao) Peru

Popular Shore Excursions in Machu Picchu

If you’re spending multiple overnights in port in Pisco or Lima, you get the special opportunity to take a mini-vacation within your cruise on an escorted tour to Machu Picchu thanks to multi-day shore excursions.

Multi-Day Machu Picchu

This shore excursion encompasses three days and takes you to the wonder that is Machu Picchu. You’ll also visit top sites in Cusco and another Incan site called the Fortress of Sacsayhuaman. During this unique shore excursion, you’ll stay in 5-star accommodations in Cusco.

Orient Express Hiram Bingham Train

Part of your transportation from Machu Picchu will include a ride on this luxury train that features domed ceilings, live entertainment with a local flair, and a gourmet meal. It’s part of the multi-day Machu Picchu shore excursion, but feels like an extra excursion unto itself.

Galapagos Islands Vacation Package

Another way to visit Machu Picchu via a cruise vacation is by adding a land component to your Galapagos Islands cruise. Our all-inclusive Galapagos Islands vacation packages can include a cruise around the islands followed by a multi-day escorted tour to Machu Picchu.

Helpful Tips Before You Go

You won’t find much opportunity to shop when you’re at the ancient site of Machu Picchu. Instead, do your shopping in Cusco, where you’ll find a bustling market, an artisan shopping neighborhood, and plenty of shops within the streets adjacent to the main square of Plaza de Armas. You’ll also have the opportunity to purchase souvenirs while on the train you’ll take from Machu Picchu back to Cusco.

Popular souvenirs include locally made, 100% alpaca wool sweaters, hats, and scarves. Handmade jewelry and loom-created weaves by local artisans are great souvenirs, too. You’ll also find colorfully painted wooden figurines which commonly depict the nativity.

As is the case in most tourist areas, pickpocketing is prevalent in Cusco. Keep your belongings where you can see them and keep purses and bags to the front of you. Backpacks and wallets in back pockets are easy targets for pickpocketers.

When packing, keep in mind that Machu Picchu has some strict rules. Changing your clothes once you’re on the site is not allowed, even if it’s putting a dress or skirt on over your pants, so pack the exact outfit you want to wear while there. Other things that are not permitted are drones, tripods, large backpacks, and food or drinks. If you have mobility issues, you are permitted to bring a walking stick, but it must have a rubber end so the stones and walking paths of Machu Picchu are better protected.

Machu Picchu Patagonia Tours Ideal South America

Sample Itinerary – Will Be Customized

Day 1: lima, peru  .

After a long international flight, we’ll meet you at the airport in Lima and take you to your hotel – either at the airport (if flying to Cusco next day) or in central Miraflores (if staying in Lima).

Day 2: Lima / Cusco

We recommend adding a day to see Lima and decompress from your international flight.  Choose from a city tour including visits to its grand colonial plaza, catacomb-filled churches, and pre-Colombian museums, a market visit and cooking class, or visit a traditional fishing village.

But you can also head straight up to Cusco on this day.  You would fly from Lima over the Andes to arrive at the Inca capital of Cusco – 11,000 feet above sea level. Upon arrival, we’ll pick you up and take you to stay in the Sacred Valley, located at a lower and more manageable altitude to acclimatize. If there’s time, we’ll stop by the town and markets at Chincheros, before arriving at your hotel.

Day 3: Sacred Valley

Today we’ll bring on a tour of the Sacred Valley of the Incas, accompanied by a professional, English-speaking guide.  You’ll have the chance to visit the markets at Pisac – the most famous in the Valley – with wares from local vendors, and if there’s time, the ruins above the town.  With a lunch break included, you’ll also visit the village and ruins of Ollantaytambo – a special Inca fortress with a unique history … and the departing point for trains to Machu Picchu.

Day 4: Machu Picchu !

Today you’ll catch a train to Machu Picchu town, where your guide awaits to bring you on the bus up to the entrance of the incredible Inca citadel.  These are not just ruins – it’s a city – a staggering archeological and engineering masterpiece!  After an expertly guided tour, you should have some time to enjoy if further at your leisure – walking to the Inca Bridge or the Sun Gate, taking more photos, or simply sitting in quiet contemplation. In the afternoon, you’ll catch a train back to Cusco.

Option: You can choose to spend an extra night in  Machu Picchu town , visiting Machu Picchu again the following day  and  climb the  ubiquitous  peak of Huayna Picchu.

Day 5: Cusco

Today you can join a small group for a tour of Cusco – the ancient center of the Inca universe.  The Cusco cathedral and central Plaza de Armas are special in their own right.  And the visits to the Q’oricancha (Temple of the Sun) and Sacsayhuaman make it even more worthwhile.

Day 6: Cuzco – Buenos Aires, Argentina

Today you’ll fly to one of South America’s cultural meccas – Buenos Aires, the birthplace of tango music and dance.  We’ll bring you to stay in one of its fashionable neighborhoods, such as Palermo or Soho, for easy access to a tango show that same night or shopping and a tour the following day.

Day 7: Buenos Aires

Along with your travel partner and English-speaking guide, keep your eyes and ears peeled for street performances, old-time cafe notables, boutique shops and restaurants, world-class parrilla beef, Evita Peron’s grave, and the day-glo, colorful houses of La Boca.

Day 8: Fly to El Calafate

You’ll take a short flight to El Calafate—the gateway to southern Patagonia.  You can visit the fabulous glacier museum in the afternoon, or just rest and relax in your hotel or mountain lodge.

Day 9: Perito Moreno Glacier

On this full-day tour of the blue Perito Moreno Glacier—one of the few in the world that’s not receding—you’ll take a boat ride that brings you close to its walls of ice, some as big as a city. Even when they are not calving, you can hear it moving – it’s alive!  Enjoy time on the well-designed walkways – which help make this destination so special – to explore further on your own. You’ll also walk around Redonda Bay, home of swans, flamingoes, upland geese, and South American coots, before returning to El Calafate.

Day 10:  Patagonia Ranch with Glacier Views

Today we will head back towards Glacier National Park, for 1hr 30mins, with the snow-capped Cerro Frías as our backdrop, to arrive at Nibepo Aike Ranch – the only ranch in the area that has maintained the traditions of sheep-shearing and Hereford cattle-breeding as its primary focus. Enjoy an inviting hot drink and a delicious snack in the classic quincho (rustic dining room)! Walk the coast of Lago Argentino, watch how a real gaucho (the Argentine cowboy) works the shearing shed, and view a unique demonstration of gaucho horsemanship. Always with amazing mountain and glacier views in the distance.  At the end of the day, return to the quincho, where a mouth-watering grilled lamb awaits, sizzling over a traditional Patagonian fire pit.  Vegetarian meals are available.

When is the best time to travel to the galapagos.

It is always a good time to travel to a destination as unique and fascinating as the Galapagos. There are two seasons, the rainy season and the dry season. The rainy season runs from December to June, with higher daytime temperatures (80’s F) and humidity, and occasional rain showers. The ocean temperature is also higher (77 degrees F), making swimming and snorkeling more appealing. This is also the breeding season for land birds and sea lions, and nesting season for sea turtles.

The dry season runs from June to December. During this season, the weather and ocean temperature are cooled by the Humboldt Current, which brings cold water, nutrients, and plankton from the southern part of the South America. Temperatures average in the 70’s (F) during the day and lower at night. It is also windier, and the ocean is rougher. The nutrient rich waters attract fish, seabirds, and penguins. This is also mating season of the blue-footed boobies. See all Galapagos FAQ .

When is the best time to travel to Peru & Machu Picchu?

The weather along Peru’s desert coast is decidedly moderate, with little rain and temperatures between 50 and 85 degrees year round. In summer (December to March), there are warm days with several hours of morning sunshine, but in the winter a coastal fog called la garúa sets in and makes everything gray. The best months to visit cities like Lima and Trujillo are October, November, and April, when conditions are mild and the humidity is tolerable.

Weather in Peru’s sierra consists of wet and dry seasons; the former runs from November to March, the latter from May to September. The best time to go is from April to October, which coincides with several local festivities and peak tourist crowds. Even then, expect cool nights and occasional afternoon downpours.

The Amazon region also has wet and dry seasons, with strong heat and humidity all year. To maximize wildlife-viewing opportunities, go between June and September, since in other months the sudden onset of heavy rains can foil even the best-laid plans. See all Peru FAQ .

The Main Galapagos Islands and Visitor Sites

Marine iguanas that skitter up to you on seaside rocks, eyes darting. Frigatebirds, their crimson pouches inflating as they roost in bushes. Whitetip reef sharks, gliding past you as you snorkel in calm waters. Sound inspiring? It was to Charles Darwin, whose awe at the boldness of the Galapagos Islands’ wildlife was what set him on the path to his theory of natural selection. His 1831 voyage put this remote archipelago on the map, and ever since, the Galapagos’ fascination has continued to grow. Today, the natural marvels on this protected refuge are so abundant that choosing which of the main Galapagos islands to visit can be a challenge—even for the most serious eco-travelers…

Pirates, captains and castaways: the first visitors to the galapagos.

How Darwin’s Findings in Galapagos Contributed to His Theory of Natural Selection

In 1835, not long before arriving at the Galapagos Islands, Charles Darwin wrote a letter to his friend and mentor John Stevens Henslow. “In a few days’ time,” he wrote, “the Beagle will sail for the Galapagos Islands. I look forward with joy and interest to this, both as being somewhat nearer to England and for the sake…

The Fascinating Wildlife Of Fernandina Island, Galapagos

Lying across a narrow channel from the much larger Isabela Island, Fernandina Island is best known for its abundance of marine iguanas: reptiles that the revered Charles Darwin himself called “hideous-looking” and “imps of darkness” — and, indeed, they have a prehistoric look that only a mother could love…

Genovesa Island, Galapagos: Prime Territory For Birds

Machu Picchu, Peru

Machu Picchu plus one: tried-and-tested South American combinations

  • Machu Picchu

South America can seem like an intimidating place to tackle: its size means that you invariably have to focus your explorations in a certain corner. Or, so you thought. As flight infrastructure improves across the continent, more and more routes are opening up between countries. We’ve found that it’s now easier than ever before to combine different countries within the course of the same trip. Cuzco, in particular, has been blessed with several good flight connections. So, we asked our specialists: which destination would you fly onto after visiting Machu Picchu — and why?

All of their answers can be woven into a tailor-made itinerary for your trip to Peru , and beyond.

Machu Picchu and… Iguaçu Falls

For the chance to see two south american icons in the same trip.

Iguaçu Falls

How does this combination work?

They may be a continent’s breadth apart, but it’s easier to reach Iguaçu Falls from Machu Picchu than you might think. From Lima, you fly to Cuzco (the gateway to the Inca citadel) then back again to connect with a direct flight (taking four hours) to Iguaçu . This flight departs almost daily at midday, depositing you on the Brazilian side of the falls in the evening.

Why Iguaçu Falls?

This waterfall (or falls, since it’s made up of about 275 individual cascades) is, for me, the best sight in South America. It’s a rewarding place to visit as a corollary to Machu Picchu . While the Inca citadel impresses with its setting — I always think it looks like it’s hovering ethereally amid the surrounding peaks — it’s the raw power of nature that astonishes you at Iguaçu.

I say Iguaçu (with a cedilla on the c), as opposed to Iguazú , because technically you’ll fly into Brazil. But, you can also explore Argentina’s portion of the falls. The Brazilian side gives you the wide-angle views, while the Argentinian side is all about getting up close and personal. You can pick your route over walkways to gaze down the watery gullet of the Devil’s Throat, a chasm so deep and spray-whipped the indigenous Guaraní people thought it had diabolical origins.

You can spend two days here exploring the falls from all perspectives (including from the water: there are several boat trips, some of which involve getting a thorough soaking). But, you could also stay much longer, hiking the Atlantic Forest trails on each side of the border.

Machu Picchu and… Ecuador and the Galapagos

For a wildlife-focused sequel to a cultural or active trip.

Textiles stall, Otavalo market

Fly from Lima to Cuzco (and Machu Picchu) then back to Lima to catch a connection to Ecuador’s capital, Quito (a two-and-a-half-hour flight). From Quito, you can travel easily around mainland Ecuador , or use it as your launchpad for a trip matching Machu Picchu with the Galapagos Islands (roughly a three-and-a-half-hour flight away).

Why Ecuador and the Galapagos Islands?

For a start, I think it’s interesting to compare Cuzco with Quito. The former’s crazy-paving-style Inca stone foundations are offset by Quito’s polished, sugar-white, blocky buildings and more magisterial-looking town planning. They’re both colonial cities, but they’re poles apart architecturally.

From Quito, you can head south to the Avenue of the Volcanoes , where the firepower of the Andes is really brought home in a way it isn’t in Peru. Or, you could go north to the highlands, where you’ll find the continent’s best indigenous handicraft market at Otavalo . I’d say it’s a particularly rewarding visit if your appetite has been whetted by some of the weaving and artisan objects you’ve seen in Peru.

The Galapagos Islands present a startlingly different landscape to Machu Picchu and the Sacred Valley. Outside of the green season, the western isles are all scarred volcanic rock and hardened lava — only in the central islands can you encounter hills reminiscent of the lower slopes of the Peruvian Andes.

You’re here, of course, for the endemic wildlife that it’s impossible to see anywhere else. For birdwatching, you should visit Genovesa Island as a priority, on a Galapagos expedition cruise , to see headliners such as masked or red-footed boobies. But, if (like me) mammals intrigue you more, I’d recommend spending time in the misty highlands of Santa Cruz Island.

It’s here you’ll see giant tortoises roaming freely around open fields: they look a bit like scuttling boulders. If one accidentally gets too close to you (and, although you must keep your distance, it does happen — they’re everywhere), you might see it retreat into its shell with a hissing pop (the sound of air being expunged).

Machu Picchu and… Bolivia’s Salar de Uyuni salt flats

For experiencing drastically different landscapes in the space of one trip.

Salar de Uyuni

You only need to add a minimum of four days onto your Peru trip to take in both Machu Picchu and the Salar de Uyuni , the world’s largest salt flat.

You fly direct from Cuzco to La Paz (a mere one-hour flight), spending the night there before taking an early-morning 45-minute internal flight out to Salar de Uyuni. You’ll arrive at 8am and journey straight out to the salt.

Why Bolivia’s salt flats?

I have a lifelong love for Machu Picchu and its muscularly mountainous setting, but I was similarly and unexpectedly entranced by the starkly flat, unbroken horizon lines and almost eerie whiteness of Bolivia’s salt flats. In just two days, you can experience this otherworldly, beguiling environment in a variety of rewarding ways.

Driving across the pans on a 4x4 tour with your guide, you’ll see how their hexagonally patterned surface is pierced with deep, dark holes called ojos de sal, or ‘eyes’. Flags indicate them, and you might see gases bubbling out of them. Near the outskirts of the flats, you’ll find briny pools that create the most distorting reflections (pray for a cloudy day, which makes the reflections all the more dramatic).

You also can drive out to islands marooned in the middle of the flats. They’re covered with cacti and petrified corals (the salt pans were once a lakebed), and hiking to the top of one gives you a 360-degree panorama of the salt field stretching out in all directions.

And, it’s not just about the salt. Tunupa Volcano, near the edge of the flats, is streaked russet, pink, yellow and white, and immaculately preserved mummies have been found in a cave at its edge — they’re still on display there.

Machu Picchu and… Colombia

For beach time (and more) after your peru tour.

Beach at Punta Faro

Direct flights of under three-and-a-half hours depart daily from Cuzco to Bogotá, arriving in the evening. From Bogotá, you can connect onto a range of internal flights for destinations including the Spanish colonial city of Cartagena on Colombia’s Caribbean coast .

Why Colombia?

Colombia’s star continues to rise, so now is an excellent time to see for yourself what all the fuss is about. The short (by South American standards) flight from Cuzco to Colombia’s capital puts the whole of the country at your disposal, as many domestic flights pass through Bogotá .

You could, of course, spend weeks exploring. But, if you’d simply like to dip your toe into Colombia as a follow-on from Peru , I’d suggest spending a day investigating the capital, before heading to the languid Caribbean beaches.

Bogotá is closer to Lima than Cuzco: it’s chaotic and rough around the edges. But, like Lima, it has a well-preserved heritage heartland, La Candelaría , which is awash with some of the most ambitious, politically astute street art in the continent (I recommend taking a private guided tour).

On a breakfast tour of the city’s Paloquemao Market, you can try some of Colombia’s exotic fruits. I like the caimito (star apple): cut it in half, and scoop out its sweet, tender pulp.

Cartagena (an hour and a half’s flight from Bogotá) is a grand sea-facing city with conquistador-constructed ramparts and a distinctive Afro-Caribbean heartbeat. Spend evenings nursing a beer or a rum in the Plaza de los Coches, which bursts into life with spontaneous salsa performances and a more melancholic local folk dance called vallenato.

Cartagena’s also your passport to beachside relaxing: a boat ride from the city is the island resort of Punta Faro . Here you can lounge on a crescent of sand or in a hammock suspended over the sea, and (when there’s no moon) take a boat trip to witness the phenomenon of bioluminescence.

Machu Picchu and… Mendoza, Argentina

For downtime at the end of a busy trip.

Cavas Wine Lodge

From Cuzco, you retrace your steps to Lima for an overnight flight to Mendoza , Argentina’s principal wineland. Flights depart daily (apart from Wednesdays) and take just over three-and-a-half hours. I recommend getting out of the city of Mendoza itself (pleasant though it is) and staying among the vines, a 30-minute to one-and-a-half-hour drive away.

Why Mendoza?

Mendoza’s easy on the eyes: fervently green, cosseted vineyards stretch out to meet Andean peaks whose tops often glow bright white with fresh snowfall. Even if you don’t consider yourself an oenophile, I think Mendoza’s a great coda to a Peru trip, especially if you’ve been on the go a lot or you’re looking to relax after hiking to or around Machu Picchu .

It’s a great alternative to beach-based relaxing for several reasons. Go at the right time of year, and the climate is warm and dry, rather than stickily humid. There are several excellent properties where you can cocoon yourself for a few days. I really like the extravagance of the Cavas Wine Lodge , where each room has a private plunge pool.

From your hotel, you can go for strolls among the vines or gentle horseback rides. Many properties are within walking distance of wineries, so you don’t need a car.

You also have the option of exploring with a guide. My two preferred wineries to tour are Gimenez Riili, a small, independent place, or the bigger Renacer, which does one of the best malbecs in the region.

The food is also a highlight of Mendoza. I’d recommend eating at Siete Fuegos in the Uco Valley, where Argentina’s acclaimed chef Francis Mallmann serves fine-dining dishes cooked using gaucho-inspired open-flame techniques.

About South America

South America has a variety of mixed culture. Since the arrival of the Europeans in 1492 the population has become extremely diverse. It would be difficult to generalize about one cultural definition of the continent but is known that a large majority have part of their roots from Spain, Portugal, Africa. Because of the Spanish and Portuguese colonization, mestizos (mixed of natives and Spanish or Portuguese) are also in the majority. In the early 1900’s South America received more immigrants Including Italian going to Brazil, Argentina and Uruguay. Then more significant arrivals to South America has come from Germany, Libya, China and Japan.

The mix of culture, the great biodiverse wildlife and the big adventure possibilities is what makes South America so unique. South America offers great travel options for the perfect vacation.

This makes it a great choice for affordable trips. In Quito, you’ll find many budget-friendly places to stay, like hostels and cheap hotels, ensuring a cozy visit.

Quito is packed with fascinating places to visit, from historic spots to lively markets. The city’s Old Town is a must-see, with its well-kept colonial buildings. Don’t miss the chance to see Quito and its mountains from the El Panecillo view point.
