However, you might not get the best heat distribution this way. If you want a more evenly-heated curl, start in the middle and wrap the ends around the roller first. After that, roll the hair section the rest of the way up and fasten it. This method maximizes your curl potential across the entire hair piece by distributing the heat more evenly.

Patience is indeed a virtue, especially when it comes to coiffing your locks. While hot rollers cut down on the amount of work you have to do (say, compared to a curling iron ), they still need just about as much time to do their thing.

Thinner-haired heads can get away with wearing hot rollers for 15 minutes or so. On the other hand, those whose hair is more like a mane (i.e., thick, curly, and a little unruly) may want to wait a good half hour before removing their hot rollers.

When to Use Hot Rollers vs. a Curling Iron

You may be wondering: Why should I invest in hot rollers if I already have a curling iron or curling wand? “I would say that rollers will give you more of a ‘set’ look with big and bouncy curls where an iron can be used for a loose wave or tighter curl and everything in between,” explains Aguirre. “If it’s a bouncy style you’re going after, I would recommend the hot roller set. You can also get more volume with a roller set.” Meanwhile, says the stylist, “If you’re wanting a beachy wave, use a curling iron.”

How to Use Hot Rollers

Don’t worry if you’ve never tried them before. “Hot rollers are pretty straight forward,” according to Aguirre.

Section hair. “With your hair completely dry, start at the top of the head and take section by section as wide as the roller,” says Aguirre.

Start rolling. “Roll the hair to the ends and wrap the roller to the base of the head, starting at the crown and moving forward,” says the stylist. “Then, using horizontal sections, continue on with the sides, then the back.” Remember, the rollers are hot, so be careful!

Top with hairspray. Once the curlers are in place, “You can finish with a light hold spray and let them cool off.”

Remove the rollers. It may take some trial-and-error to figure out how long to leave in the rollers. “Depending on what type of hair you have, you can remove them right away once they’ve cooled, or wait a little while longer if your hair is thicker and coarse.”

Tousle and style. Once the rollers are out, “Lightly brush with your fingers to separate the curls and add bounce.”Now, find out which hot rollers are right for you and your hair.

The ceramic barrels are coated with velvet flocking to protect your hair, and the ends have a cool-touch grip to prevent burning. The curlers were easy to remove and we didn't notice any damage. After pulling them out, they left large, glammed-up curls in their wake. We loved the modern display stand (especially in comparison to the retro-looking caboodles).

Chi's Smart Magnify Rollers are made for our friends with longer locks. You'll get nine ceramic barrels in your choice of 1-inch or 1.25-inch diameter. While they have velvet flockings, during testing, we found that the rims get slightly hot to the touch. The rollers hold securely in place with the included claw clips, though. When we pulled them out, we got a classic hot-roller look : not too glam, not too tight, just bouncy hair that's full of body. You can't beat that.

This 20-piece ceramic roller set from Conair was one of the easiest we've tried . The rollers come in three sizes ranging from 0.75 to 1.25 inches in diameter, so your curls won't feel too uniform. It only takes about 90 seconds to get hot , and then you leave them in for 10 minutes for loose waves and 20 minutes for tighter ringlets. There are a whopping 12 heat settings to choose from ranging from 140F to 230F. Each ceramic barrel is covered in velvet flocking, which we felt really helped prevent tension and snaring. Additionally, we appreciated that the plastic tips kept us from burning our fingers. All in all, this set was impressive. While it doesn't have all the bells and whistles of pricier options, we loved the design and overall results. We saw bouncy, well-defined, long-lasting curls across a range of hair types and textures.

Traveling with hot rollers can be a pain since they take up so much room, but not this kit. Another winner from Conair, this compact set of 20 comes in a case that's about the size of a small purse, so you know it'll fit in your carry-on. But what we love most about it is the roller design—they have little grippers all over to help get your hair into place (and keep it there). It also helps prevent snags and tangles when you take them out. The rollers heat up in just 85 seconds and create big waves in just 10 minutes. We wish it had more than one heat setting, but considering the size and price tag, it's a great product that works exactly as it should.

What to Look For in Hot Rollers

• Smooth coverings: According to Nader, the best kinds of hot rollers have soft velvet flocking over the metal barrels. He explains that this prevents kinks, creases, and indentations you'd often get with the kits of decades past. We like the T3 Micro Volumizing Hot Rollers, a set of hot rollers that features ceramic barrels coated with velvet flocking. Plus, the rollers have a cool-touch grip to prevent burning during removal.
• Fasteners: It's best to opt for rollers that fasten to the hair with metal pins. "These secure to the hair beautifully compared to using a hair clip with claws," Nader tells Byrdie. On the other hand, claw-style fasteners can be a bit easier to attach, though they don't always offer the most secure hold. The Remington Ionic Conditioning Hair Setter comes with color-coordinated metal pins that match the different barrel sizes and offer a super-secure hold.
• Multiple sizes: Nader recommends getting a set of hot rollers that contains at least two sizes of barrels—even better if it's three (we like the Conair Xtreme Instant Heat Ceramic Hot Rollers). This will allow you to create a multitude of looks. "You'll also then have the choice to give your hair extra body by using the smaller rollers if needed," he says.

Wait until the rollers are properly heated and then wrap sections of hair around each one. Leave them in until completely cooled, then use a boar bristle brush to break up curls and give the hair a smooth, sleek, glamorous finish, says Nader.

It varies among sets. Hot rollers usually take at least 10 minutes to work, though it's usually not longer than a half-hour. For the best results, leave them in until they've cooled down entirely. 

According to Nader, the rule of thumb is "the smaller the roller, the tighter the result." However, when you've only got a few inches of hair to work with, you won't be able to wrap them completely around a larger barrel. In other words, smaller rollers are generally best for shorter hair.

It ultimately depends on the type of curl you want. Hot rollers are the better option for big, loose curls, while a curling iron is ideal for achieving tighter, smaller curls.

Hot rollers bring together the best parts of a curling iron and a non-heated roller set . You get that big bouncy curl, and you don’t end up with sore arms or the crick in your neck from holding up a curling tong. “When I think hot rollers , I think Hollywood glamour or goddess,” says Greg Ruggeri , stylist and founder of Salon Ruggeri. “One of the main advantages of hot rollers over other styling devices, such as a round brush or curling iron, is that they can create curls and waves that last longer,” says Maria Elizabeth, founder of Salon deZen . Hot rollers heat hair from the inside out, setting the curl more firmly. “This means that the style can last for days,” Elizabeth adds, “without needing touch-ups.” No matter your hair type, there’s a set of hot rollers for you — but to get the best results, you’ll want to blow out and smooth curly hair before use, says Siobhan Benson, a stylist at CutLoose . Stretching natural, detangled hair before applying a lightweight serum should work, too, if you’re avoiding heat.

What we’re looking for

Heat-up time.

Fairly self-explanatory but important: You’ll want to wait only so long for your rollers to reach the right temperature. We’ve outlined each set’s heating time — chances are that the less time they take to heat up, the more convenient you’ll find them. But some materials take a little longer to heat up and leave you with a lasting curl.

Hair-length suitability

A hot roller’s barrel size will better suit certain hair lengths. Larger barrels — over two inches, generally — will work better on longer hair, and vice versa for shorter hair. We have a couple of separate picks tailored to hair length but have noted throughout which sets would typically best curl a particular length. In many cases, a mixture of barrel lengths makes the set suitable for all hair types as well.

These rollers from T3 were recommended by three stylists and by Marcia Rhodes , who has used hot rollers at home for a decade. “I have fine, limp hair and find that hot rollers are the best way to add volume that lasts all day,” she says. After trying several brands, she keeps coming back to T3. Both Lauren Kunijo , stylist and co-owner of Kenna Kunijo salon , and Ruggeri say the T3s are really user-friendly. “Simply turn them on and let them sit for a moment. If you are a bit nervous to use them, take them out when the roller is warm to the touch,” says Ruggeri. With natural and textured hair , it’s easier to wind up to the scalp from the ends of dry, detangled, and sectioned hair. For other hair textures, you can either wind up or wrap your hair around the roller, securing it with a clip or a pin. “Let the rollers cool down for about ten minutes, and there you have it,” Ruggeri says.

Best less expensive hot rollers

Andrew Fitzsimons , a celebrity hairstylist who has worked with Madonna and the Kardashians , often uses this less expensive set. The rollers’s titanium plates heat up quickly, and the three barrel sizes offer styling versatility. “With them, you can achieve a standard blowout, beach waves, tight curls, or big ringlets depending on the size of the curlers you use,” he says.

Best hot rollers for beginners

Caleb Backe, a hair expert at Maple Holistics, and Ghanima Abdullah, stylist and beauty consultant at the Right Hairstyles , say that most people initially struggle to get the hang of hot rollers. “There is a learning curve when you’re first starting out,” Abdullah says. For that reason, Fitzsimons also recommends these Conair rollers for first-time users. A plastic cap at either end of each roller protects your fingertips from getting singed. You may need a bit of time and patience to set each roller in place with the clips . And though having 20 rollers in the set may seem like overkill, the variety of sizes will help you try out different looks. “Once you get comfortable with using hot rollers, your options are really limitless,” Fitzsimons adds.

Best hot rollers for professionals

Two of our stylists recommended these hot rollers for a professional to keep in their kit . Like the Conair rollers, “this set comes with differently sized rollers so that a stylist can easily use them on short, medium-length, or long hair,” says Abdullah. They heat up fast, and evenly, since they’re made of titanium and ceramic. As a result, Abdullah says, “they hold the heat better and consistently create great curls on different heads of hair.” Elizabeth of Salon deZen agrees and says that the different barrel lengths give you the flexibility to style almost any client.

Heat-up time: Two minutes | Hair-length suitability: Short hair

“This set has five rollers, which makes it just enough to style thin hair, ” says Abdullah. “The rollers are pretty large, at 1.5 inches, so they’re big enough to create current styles with loose curls.” Abdullah also notes that the set’s compact size makes it a solid option for travel (and at under $30, you can’t really argue with the price).

Best hot rollers for short hair

How long should you keep in hot rollers to avoid damaging hair?

If you are looking for a low-damage way to style your hair, hot rollers are the solution. “You can’t leave hot rollers in long enough to damage your hair. In terms of heat damage, it’s fool-proof,” Lopez says. “It takes an average of 12 minutes to cool down, although I have seen results after five minutes. For style longevity, leave in the hair for about 15 minutes to get the style retention you’re looking for.”

How do you prep your hair for hot rollers?

Rough-drying your hair to start is key, Lopez suggests. “I like to use the T3 Cura Luxe on low speed and high heat while rough-drying in order to keep the elasticity of the hair,” he says. “Once dry, prep the hair with a medium styling mousse. The heat from the rollers will activate this mousse and give the look a stronger memory. Finally, before I wrap each section around the hot rollers, I spray with hairspray and brush through.” His go-to duo includes Kenra’s Medium Hold Mousse and IGK’s Intern Flexible hairspray.

Can all hair types use hot rollers?

Great news: almost everyone can benefit from hot rollers. “Yes! Although for curly and natural hair types, you want to smooth hair first and then use the hot rollers,” Lopez insists. “The hot rollers won’t straighten or completely smooth out naturally curly hair.”

Any other tips you have for using hot rollers?

“Sometimes, I wrap the hair around the rollers like I would an iron because it can give you more of a loose wave look,” Lopez says. “If you have long hair, pick up a one-inch roller and wrap a section around the roller like a curling iron and clip it vertically. Once cool, release the roller and you will achieve a long, loose curl.”

Are hot rollers better than curling irons?

Hot rollers are a great choice if you’re looking for a quick and easy way to add curl and volume to your hair. While curling irons can require a little more skill, you do get more versatility with a curling iron. As for which one is better, it all depends on your personal preference! “With hot rollers, I have greater control over style longevity and bounce of the hair. It’s also extremely gentle on the hair, so it’s great if you’re worried about hair damage : color-treated hair, over-processed hair , etc.,” says Lopez. “Although they are extremely gentle, you still get a big result!”

We put 23 heatless curlers to the test over the course of two weeks, testing each product at least two or three times, paying careful attention to how it performed in the following categories: ease of use, comfort (including during overnight use), curling ability, hair look and feel, and durability. In terms of fabrics that’ll come in contact with your hair or skin, silk is an exceptional choice. Not to be confused with satin (which can be produced from silk or other fibers), silk won’t draw moisture from your hair like other fabrics can. It also helps reduce creasing. That’s why this roller set crafted from 100 percent pure mulberry silk tops our list. The high-quality materials help produce bouncy, voluminous waves that look shiny and natural. 

In our tests, we found that this product was very comfortable to sleep in — even for a side sleeper. Though this particular team member's naturally straight hair migrated down the rod just a bit overnight, it mostly stayed in place and produced a curly hairstyle that began approximately mid-way down the hair shaft and lasted all day. We found this product to be user-friendly (just as simple as braiding your hair), even for a heatless curler beginner. 

The rod is one-size-fits-most and can be used on all hair types. For best results, we recommend starting with slightly damp hair and leaving the curling rod in place until your hair completely dries (or overnight). Available in three shades and decorated with dainty pearls at the tips, this heatless curling set stood out in our tests for its ability to create bouncy, frizz-free waves with minimal crimps and no added damage. People with very long or thick hair will appreciate the added surface area on the 43-inch rod. If your hair is shorter, you can fold up the unused ends of the rods and secure them with the included scrunchies.

Though it would have been nice if this set came with a claw clip to secure the rod in place while wrapping your hair, most people won’t find this to be much of an issue since you can use any large claw clip you already own (or you can purchase one separately for fairly cheap). We found this to be comfortable for overnight use and preferred to use it that way over daytime wear. It’s safe for dry cleaning or hand-washing.

It was difficult to achieve a tighter curl pattern.

Don’t be intimidated by this heatless curling device’s unusual shape — we found it surprisingly simple to use, especially after watching tutorials on Octocurl’s Instagram page . In our tests, we thought the cotton poplin headband, which is attached to eight curling rods, was very comfortable to sleep in, since the fabric and interior stuffing were both super soft. The adjustable headband didn’t feel tight or constricting. 

Since the curling rods have elastics attached to the bottom, all you need is this one item — making it extra convenient for travel since you don’t have to worry about storing and containing multiple pieces. We love that it’s available in four sizes based on hair length (ranging from seven-inch straps to 17-inch straps), as well as a kid-friendly version with a headband that is one inch smaller.

Meanwhile, the included silk scrunchies made it simple to secure our ends, and the claw clip held everything in place while we wrapped our hair.

This wallet-conscious pick is great for beginners.

If you’re a heatless curling beginner and looking for a solid yet budget-friendly product to try, we recommend this satin and foam curling ribbon, which includes two scrunchies made from the same material. (We recommend securing it atop your head with a claw clip, which is not included.) Though not as delicate on your strands as its silk counterparts, we were still able to achieve voluminous curls with this item and especially appreciated it for overnight use. The soft material made it comfortable to sleep in, and therefore, we found it more convenient and luggage-friendly to pack for travel than a traditional hot curling iron.

The satin rods provide voluminous, beachy waves. 

They’re not the most comfortable for overnight use.  

For a voluminous, loosely curled hairstyle that resembles bouncy beach waves, try Kitch’s six-piece flexible curling rod kit. Though not quite as comfortable as many of the other options on our list for overnight use, these are perfectly suited for curling your hair during the day. Simply divide your hair into six sections and wrap each around a single rod (if you have thicker hair, you may want to invest in a second pack to make sure all your hair fits in the rods), then twist into place. We liked that the product provides a more voluminous look than a heated curling iron, however, we found that hairspray was helpful to keep the curls in place.

Other Heatless Curlers We Liked

There were a few other heatless curlers that stood out during testing, although they had some setbacks.

Cozy Curlers Short Cozy Curlers : The foam rods were great for creating tight curls, however, they were less comfortable to sleep in than many of our other favorites. 

Halo Hair Labs Icy Halo Heatless Curling Kit : Though this was easy to use and caused no issues overnight, we wished the rod had a bit more length to better accommodate long hair. 

Invisibobble Heatless Curling Set : This heatless curling set did the trick, but we prefer a silk option 

To find the very best heatless curlers in every category, we tested 23 products in a real-world setting over the course of two weeks. Each product was tested at least two or three times during the testing period. We applied them to slightly damp hair, or according to the manufacturer’s directions, and left them in our hair for a minimum of two hours. We paid close attention to ease of use, comfort (including during overnight use), curling ability, hair look and feel, as well as durability. We will continue to test our winners for an additional six months to make sure they hold up and will update the results as needed.

Tips for Buying Heatless Curlers

Consider your hair type.

All hair types can benefit from heatless styling (as opposed to hot tools), but certain types of heatless curlers are better suited for some hair types than others. While people with thicker hair may find foam rollers or flexi-rods provide the most hold, those with fine hair might have better luck with fabric-covered curling ribbons, which you can keep in overnight for longevity. 

Watch tutorials first

If you’ve never used heatless curlers before, there can be a bit of a learning curve. We recommend watching tutorials on how to use the specific product you’re considering buying. Make sure you understand the best methodology for getting the desired look with the product, and choose one that you think you'll use the most. The Russian capital is the largest city in Europe with a population of over 13 million, and has a long history as the capital of one of the most important countries and empires in world history. While Russia is often cast in a negative light in the media in Western countries, Moscow is actually one of the fastest growing tourist destinations in the world and although there certainly are some political issues to consider there, it is a place with plenty of fun things to do and see.

The location of the city on the Moskva River is one of the reasons that it developed, and the earliest records of the city date to the twelfth century. At the time Moscow was only a small town, although it started to grow into a prominent trading city towards the late thirteenth century.

What are the Best Things to Do in Moscow?

While there are many different attractions that you will be able to see in Moscow, there is no doubt that the most iconic of these is Red Square , which is surrounded by the oldest and most prominent buildings in the city. It is right in the heart of the city and on every tourist map you’ll find. The cobblestone square is surrounded by beautiful architecture and a lot of the history of this city took place here and you obviously have access to the public area at any time of day or night. It is well worth planning a night visit for some spectacular photographs. Around Red Square you will also find the colorful towers of Saint Basil’s Cathedral.

Saint Basil’s Cathedral

The onion-shaped domes of Saint Basil’s Cathedral are unforgettable and it is on everyone’s list of places to visit in Moscow. They were designed to make the building look like the shape of a flame on a bonfire and although the Soviet government was pronounced in their anti-religiousness, even they knew better than to do anything with this iconic Moscow attraction. It was ordered to be built in 1500s by Ivan the Terrible and it is far from… terrible.

While the Kremlin is often associated with the government, much of the complex is open to visitors, and is well worth spending a few days exploring. Although it is still an active government complex, part of it is open from Friday through Wednesday from 10 am to 5 pm.

While you are at the Kremlin doing some Moscow sightseeing, check out the world’s largest bell, which sits on those grounds. It was originally cast in 1735 at the request of Empress Anna Ioanovna , a niece of the famous Peter the Great.

Lenin’s Mausoleum

Lenin’s Mausoleum houses a glass sarcophagus with the embalmed body of… wait for it…. Vladimir Lenin. It is not open for too long each day, only from 10 am to 1 pm on Tuesdays through Saturdays.

One of the remnants of the Cold War, and 165 feet below the surface of the city, it is a collection of tunnels and bunkers that you can now see, but it is only available via a scheduled tour. Tour packages are available at all hours of the day, catering to a range of ages, some of which focus more on the historical aspects of the bunker, while other take a nearly comic angle on the tangible threat of nuclear annihilation for all humankind.

Museum of Soviet Arcade Games

Located in the basement of a technical school in the suburbs, the Museum of Soviet Arcade Games features about 60 machines from the Soviet era including video games, pinball machines, and others. The museum has an underground feel and is one of the oddest Moscow attractions you can imagine, and although only 50 to 55 of the games are playable, each of the machines paints a picture of life and entertainment in the past, during the Cold War behind the Iron Curtain.

Laika Monument

Laika was the first living thing to circle the Earth in outer space. It did so in Sputnik 2, which made over 2,000 revolutions of the Earth before disintegrating on reentry. This statue was installed near a Moscow military facility in 2008 in honor of this Moscow mutt that got in a spacesuit and got shot into outer space.

On the more traditional list of what to see in Moscow, this is a massive, 350-foot fall obelisk that commemorates Yuri Gagarin’s 1961 orbit of earth and the feeling that the U.S.S.R. was going to dominate the space race.

Novodevichy Cemetery

The cemetery was opened in 1898, but once famous Russians like Nikolai Gogol and Sergey Askakov got re-intermentered there, after their former necropolises were demolished under Stalin, it got even more popular. Here you can find the graves of Chekov, Bulgakov, Khrushchev, Yeltsin, Tolstoy, and also a number of Russian cosmonauts.

Fallen Monument Park

When the Soviet Union fell, so did dozens and dozens of monuments to historical figures from the past of the U.S.S.R. Some ended up at in the Fallen Monument Park, which is also known as the Park of the Fallen Heroes. In this park near Gorky Park , you can find statues of Lenin, Stalin, and other heros of the Soviet past.

Institute of Russian Realist Art

This museum was only opened in 2011, largely consisting of a private collector’s extensive collection. It has pieces that reflect the artistic style of socialist realism, which was the officially approved art of the Soviet Union. Most consider it merely propaganda , but it is eerily beautiful.

State Darwin Museum

In a society that devalued religion and religious beliefs, of course there is a museum dedicated to Charles Darwin, who’s evolutionary theory still irks most religious people in the world. It was built in 1907 and has over 3,000 pieces in a three story building.

The Pushkin Museum

For those of you that have a keen eye for art, the Pushkin Museum is one of the things to see in Moscow, for sure. There are some fine original pieces in here, and it’s devoted to Western art. You will spend a good few hours in here, just walking around, admiring the artwork.

More Fun Things to do in Moscow?

Along with its historical and touristic attractions, the culture in Moscow is also a particularly thriving, with the ballet and the orchestras of Moscow being internationally recognized. There are also plenty of other venues for enjoying live music and theatre, while another of the distinctively Russian attractions is the Moscow State Circus . The city is also home to some of the finest restaurants, with internationally renowned chefs, while the local cuisine is also quite distinctive and worth trying during your visit.

The things to see and enjoy are also complemented by the range of activities that you can enjoy in the winter, with one of the most popular being ice-skating. There are several ice-rinks around the city that tend to be quite busy when they are open, but it is something that many people will want to do during their visit. If you are visiting during the warmer months there is also a water park that is fun for families, while the Moscow Zoo is the oldest in Russia. If you are looking for something a little more adrenaline fueled, you can take flights in a MiG fighter aircraft over the city.

The Geography Of Moscow

Central Moscow

The heart of Moscow is found on the north bank of the Moskva River, and is where many of the historical buildings and the Kremlin are located. This is not generally a residential area, as almost all of the buildings are museums, churches, monuments or buildings dedicated to the running of the government. The Kremlin complex takes up much of this part of the city, while the Red Square and Kitay-Gorod area has much of the rest of Central Moscow. Most visitors to the city will spend several days exploring this historic part of the city looking around the various Moscow tourist attractions that are located here.

The Kremlin may be the home to the Russian Government, but most of this complex is actually open to visitors, and has a range of museums, churches and exhibitions, along with its fortifications. One of the most impressive attractions is the Cathedral of the Annunciation , which is beautifully topped with a series of gold domes, and was once the private chapel of the Tzars, while now it is one of the best things to do in Moscow. The Armoury Museum is another must-visit as it has a stunning collection of treasures, a diamond exhibition, ceremonial armor and state regalia. However, there are numerous other sites worth visiting in the Kremlin as well.

The cobbled grounds of Red Square are another of the most popular tourist sites in Central Moscow, and the Kazan Cathedral and Saint Basil’s Cathedral are both well worth seeing. In the square itself, you will also find monuments to Alexander II, and a grand mausoleum for Vladimir Lenin, where his body is embalmed. They are on the must-do list of places to visit in Moscow, Russia. If you do need to find a little more peace and quiet in the city center, it is worth spending some time exploring the pleasant Alexander Garden and the Taynitsky Garden.

As all of the historic center of Moscow is filled with the historic buildings, it is only the most expensive hotels that are present on the fringes of this part of the city and it definitely a place to visit in Moscow. Most people looking for budget options may need to stay a little further away from the center. Here are the hotel options that are in the center:

Where to Stay in Moscow: Central Moscow

Luxury – Hotel National – This grand hotel was opened in 1903, and is around 200 yards from Red Square, with a swimming pool and hot tub within the hotel. Rooms are beautifully decorated in a traditional style, while the reception and shared areas of the hotel are especially opulent. Rates begin at around $310 per night.

Luxury – Hotel Metropol – An Art Nouveau style hotel built in 1899, by 1918 this building was occupied and used as the Second House of the Soviets. Today it is in a great location for the Kremlin and Red Square, offering beautiful accommodation with a swimming pool and lovely restaurant and bar. Rooms available from around $290.

Luxury – St Regis Moscow – Just a short walk from the main attractions of the city, this hotel has a lovely swimming pool and a spa offering a range of treatments to help you relax. The rooms are beautifully decorated, with the bathrooms being particularly grand. Rooms begin at around $295 per night.

North-Central Moscow

Lying to the North of the Kremlin and the Kitay-Gorod district, this part of the city has a large number of historic churches to visit, mainly dating from the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries. Of particular interest is the Nativity Convent, which was a nunnery founded in the fourteenth century and relocated to its current position in the fifteenth century. The Katholikon in this complex dates from 1500, while several buildings have been added to the complex since. Another distinctive building is the Nativity Church at Putinki, which has a tented roof and is topped with several blue spires with gold crosses at their peak.

One of the interesting aspects that is worth investigating in this part of the city are the two attractions that look at some of the workings of Moscow during the Soviet era. The first of these now partially opened to the public is the Lubyanka building and prison, which was the heart of the security services in Moscow, and was also where many of the opponents of the government was taken. There is also the state museum of Gulag history, which looks at the history of the development of Russian gulags, and also features photographs, art, and even the memoirs and personal belongings of those who were sent to the gulags. Both are great things to do in Moscow when it rains, since they are indoors.

There is also a strong cultural aspect to this area of the city, with the Bolshoi Theater being home to some of the premier ballet, opera and classical music companies, and where their performances are staged. Within the Hermitage Gardens there is also the Novaia Opera (reserve your tickets early though), which hosts daily opera performances, while in the summer the gardens also host an open air jazz festival. If you are looking for a more colorful form of entertainment, the Nikulin Circus also has its home in this part of the city, and has regular performances and is well worth a private tour.

Where to Stay in Moscow: North-Central Moscow

Budget – Matrushka Hotel – Within walking distance from Red Square and the attractions of the city center, this hotel has free WiFi and has a bar on-site. Rooms are simple but comfortable, with an en-suite shower in the room, and a flat screen TV. Rooms start at around $35 per night.

Mid-range – Hotel Otokomae – Just minutes away from the Bolshoi theatre, this hotel has a lively decoration featuring a lot of modern art. Rooms have air conditioning, free WiFi and flat screen TVs, while there is also a free breakfast included. Prices start at $60 per night.

Luxury – Moscow Marriott Royal Aurora Hotel – A 5-star hotel that has a butler services sets the tone well, and this hotel has a lovely heated pool and is in a good location for exploring the city. Rooms are comfortable and spacious, with large screen TV, air conditioning and free WiFi. Rates start at $210 per night.

East-Central Moscow

For those who are looking to explore the east of the city, there are a range of museums and galleries to explore here, including some that are a little more quirky and unusual than what you would expect elsewhere. One of these is Bunker 42, Tagansky Protected Command Point, which is a large underground military bunker that was designed to have housed up to 3,000 people in case of nuclear attack during the Cold War. You can now take tours of the bunker, see an exhibition that looks at the history of the bunker, and take in a meal in the restaurant 65 meters below the surface.

There are also some interesting museums that are worth a look in this part of the city, with the Museum of Russian Icon being a free museum looking at the history of religious icons from Russia and beyond. Another fascinating place that will be of particular interest for car lovers is the Museum Moskovskiy Transport, which has a collection of several hundred vehicles, looking at how people would have moved around Moscow, while there are also some racing cars preserved here as well. The Polytechnic Museum is another place worth visiting, with collections and exhibitions looking at science and technology.

Almost every part of Moscow has historical buildings that you can visit, and here in the east of the city the Choral Synagogue was the first Jewish synagogue completed in the city in 1891, and has an ornately decorated interior. Lying on the banks of the Moskva River, the Moscow Orphanage has recently been auctioned for redevelopment, but was a huge building that was developed by Catherine the Great as a way to improve the lot of Moscow’s orphans, and while it isn’t open, you will still see the building in its prominent position. There are also several historic churches that can be explored in this part of the city.

Where to Stay in Moscow: East-Central Moscow

Budget – Wood Design Hotel – Within easy reach of the city center and the attractions in this part of the city, this quirky hotel has utilized a range of wood in the design of the room and throughout the hotel. Rooms have flat screen TVs with cable channels and free Wifi, and are simple and comfortable. Rooms start at $40 per night.

Mid-range – Red Brick Hotel – Less than a mile from the city center and Red Square, this hotel has a stylish restaurant and bar on-site, and includes a free breakfast. Rooms are nicely furnished with a modern shower room, with air conditioning and free WiFi included. Rates start at $75 a night.

Luxury – Custos Hotel Lubyansky – Located within easy reach of the city center, this hotel offers pleasant accommodation in a modern style. Rooms are air conditioned and offer spacious accommodation, with flat screen TV and Wifi included. Rates start at $95 per night.

South-Central Moscow

Lying between the south bank of the Moskva River and the Garden Ring Road, this part of the city has a particular wealth of historic churches from the sixteenth and seventeenth century. The Church of St Clement is an eighteenth century Russian Orthodox church that is topped with five domes in gold and blue, while also decorated with an attractive baroque interior. The Temple Museum of Saint Nicholas is another site worth taking a tour of, with its beautiful gold altarpiece depicting religious scenes, while there is also a range of religious art on display throughout the church.

One of the biggest attractions here is the Tretyakov Gallery, which has one of the largest collections of Russian Art on display in the city. The gallery has a collection covering many centuries up until the end of the nineteenth century, including some of the most noted Russian artists working in sculpture as well as on canvas. The New Tretyakov Gallery is an expansion of the main museum which has its own building in Gorky Park, and has the modern art collection of the gallery, and has some fascinating exhibitions and contemporary art on display.

If you prefer to explore the outdoors in Moscow, then Gorky Park is on the south bank of the river, and is a large park that is a pleasant place for a walk and to enjoy, with impressive gardens and fountains dotted throughout. There is also another museum of contemporary art located towards the southern end of the park. For those who enjoy the ballet, there is also the State Central Theater Museum of Bahrushin, which looks at the history of the ballet in Moscow.

Where to Stay in Moscow: South-Central Moscow

Rates begin at around $255 per night.

West-Central Moscow

To the west of the city center is one of the most traditional areas of the city, with Arbat Street being a pedestrianized walkway that stretches for around a kilometre, and is a lovely area to see the traditional street architecture of Moscow. Naturally, it also has many cafes and restaurants to serve visitors to the city, and has some western chains that have also arrived in this part of the city. It is also worth exploring some of the side streets of the area, away from the slightly touristy feel of this street.

As with every area of central Moscow, there are no shortage of historic churches to visit. However, one of the more interesting sites is the Christ the Saviour Cathedral, which was only completed in the 1990s. This cathedral was on the site of a previous church that was demolished during the governance of Joseph Stalin, and served as a large open-air swimming pool before being rebuilt after the fall of the Soviet Union. Now there is a museum beneath the cathedral looking at the history of the site.

You will also find several museums worth exploring in this area of the city, with the Museum of the History of Moscow having an extensive exhibition looking at the growth, development and the people of the city over the centuries. The Pushkin Museum is also well worth exploring with its extensive collection of European art, including works from Botticelli, Degas, Renoir and van Gogh.

Where to Stay in Moscow: West-Central

Budget – People Business Novinsky Hotel – Just a short walk from Arbat Street and within a short walk of the city center, this modern hotel offers simple and comfortable accommodation. How To Get To Moscow

There are four international airports that serve Moscow city, and each is within an hour’s journey of the city center, with international routes serving destinations in Russia, Europe and across the world. The city also has extensive railway connections, with routes to the capital cities of many European countries, along with the Trans-Siberian railway that allows you to take the train from Beijing or Ulaanbaatar in Mongolia. There are also long-distance bus services from many cities in Asia, Eastern Europe and Central Europe, meaning that there are plenty of options that will allow you to get in to the Russian capital.

Travel Around The City

Moscow has a comprehensive public transport system that is made up of a combination of buses, trams, trolleybuses and an underground rail network, which makes it easy to get around, with routes running from 5:30am to 1am. You can buy a cheap Troika card for the Moscow metro which you can then top up with cash to pay for your journeys, and the rates for using these routes are very reasonable. Traveling on the underground metro is also a great opportunity to see the grand ornate stations that are almost attractions themselves.

Food And Drink In Moscow

As you would expect in any cosmopolitan capital, there are plenty of international cuisine options available, but trying the local food and drink will certainly add to your cultural experience of the city. There are plenty of local dishes to look out for on Moscow’s menus, and while beef stroganoff has been exported around the world, it is a tasty dish of fried beef in a sauce made with sour cream, onions and mushrooms that is best tried in Moscow. Blinis are thin pancakes that are usually served with either a sweet or savory filling such as smoked salmon, while another dish to look out for is borscht, a soup made with beetroot and tomatoes.

There are plenty of drinks to try in Russia, and while vodka is key to the culture, there are plenty of beers that are brewed and served here, with a thriving craft beer scene too. Many of the wine options are imported from Georgia, with a few Russian wineries, but there are still several champagne producers that make the drink in Russia. One of the drinks to look out for is medovukha, which is a drink similar to mead that is produced by fermenting honey and water together. If you are looking for something non-alcoholic, mors is a fruity berry drink while ryazhenka is a thick milk based drink worth looking out for.

During the 20th century, the square became famous as the site for demonstrations designed to showcase Soviet strength. Visiting the Red Square today, you’ll find it teeming with tourists, who come to witness its magical architecture up close!

The square is the picture postcard of Russian tourism, so make sure to bring your camera when you visit! No matter the season, or the time of day, it’s delightfully photogenic! 

It’s also home to some of Russia’s most distinguishing and important landmarks, which we’ve made sure to include further down in this itinerary. It’s an important center of Russia’s cultural life and one of the top places to visit in Moscow!

Day 1 / Stop 2 – The Moscow Kremlin

The iconic Moscow Kremlin , also known as the Kremlin museum complex, sits on Borovitsky Hill, rising above the Moscow River. It is a fortified complex in the center of the city, overlooking several iconic buildings in the Red Square!

It’s the best known of the Russian Kremlins – citadels or fortress’ protecting and dominating a city. During the early decades of the Soviet era, the Kremlin was a private enclave where the state’s governing elite lived and worked.

The Kremlin is outlined by an irregularly shaped triangular wall that encloses an area of 68 acres! The existing walls and towers were built from 1485 to 1495. Inside the Kremlin museum complex, there are five palaces, four cathedrals, and the enclosing Kremlin Wall with Kremlin towers.

The Armoury Chamber is a part of the Grand Kremlin Palace’s complex and is one of the oldest museums of Moscow, established in 1851. It showcases Russian history and displays many cherished relics. Definitely make sure to check out this museum while you’re here!

The churches inside the Moscow Kremlin are the Cathedral of the Dormition, Church of the Archangel, Church of the Annunciation, and the bell tower of Ivan Veliki (a church tower).

The five-domed Cathedral of the Dormition is considered the most famous. It was built from 1475–1479 by an Italian architect and has served as a wedding and coronation place for great princes, tsars, and emperors of Russia. Church services are given in the Kremlin’s numerous cathedrals on a regular basis.

The Grand Kremlin Palace was the former Tsar’s Moscow residence and today it serves as the official workplace of the President of the Russian Federation (Vladimir Putin seems to have bagged that title for life) .

Day 1 / Stop 3 – Lenin’s Mausoleum

• Why it’s awesome: The mausoleum displays the preserved body of Soviet leader Vladimir Lenin .

• Food nearby: Khinkal’naya is a charming Georgian restaurant with vaulted ceilings and exposed brick. It’s a popular place with locals and right next to the Red Square!

Lenin’s Mausoleum, also known as Lenin’s Tomb, is the modernist mausoleum for the revolutionary leader Vladimir Lenin. It’s located within the Red Square and serves as the resting place for the Soviet leader! His preserved body has been on public display since shortly after his death in 1924.

It’s located just a few steps away from the Kremlin Wall and is one of the most controversial yet popular Moscow attractions!

Admission is free for everyone, you’ll only need to pay if you need to check a bag. Before visitors are allowed to enter the mausoleum, they have to go through a metal detector first. No metal objects, liquids, or large bags are allowed in the mausoleum!

Expect a line to enter the building, and while you’re inside the building, you’ll be constantly moving in line with other visitors. This means you won’t be able to spend as long as you’d like viewing the mausoleum, but you’ll still be able to get a good look. Pictures and filming while inside the building are strictly prohibited, and security guards will stop you if they see you breaking this rule.

The mausoleum is only open on Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, and Saturday – unless it’s a public holiday or a day scheduled for maintenance. The hours it’s open for each day are limited, make sure to check online before you visit to make sure you can fit this into your Moscow itinerary for that day!

Insider Tip: The Lenin’s Museum is there for people to pay their respect; remember to keep silent and move along quickly, it’s not intended for people to congregate around. Also, men are not allowed to wear hats and everyone must take their hands out of their pockets when inside the building.

Day 1 / Stop 4 – St. Basil’s Cathedral

• Why it’s awesome: A dazzling designed cathedral that showcases Russia’s unique architecture. This cathedral is one of the most recognizable symbols of the country!

Located in the Red Square, the ornate 16th-century St. Basil’s Cathedral is probably the building you picture when you think of Moscow’s unique architecture. Its colorful onion-shaped domes tower over the Moscow skyline!

The cathedral was built from 1555-1561 by order of Tsar Ivan the Terrible. It was designed with an iconic onion dome facade and enchanting colors that captivate all who see it. Fun fact: If you’re wondering why Russian churches have onion domes, they are popularly believed to symbolize burning candles!

This iconic cathedral has become a symbol of Russia due to its distinguishing architecture and prominent position inside the Red Square. It’s one of the most beautiful, wonderful, and mesmerizing historical cathedrals in the world!

The interior of the church surprises most people when they visit. In contrast to the large exterior, the inside is not so much one large area, but rather a collection of smaller areas, with many corridors and small rooms. There are 9 small chapels and one mausoleum grouped around a central tower.

Visiting the inside is like walking through a maze, there are even small signs all around the cathedral tracing where to walk, and pointing you in the right direction! The walls are meticulously decorated and painted with intricate floral designs and religious themes.

The church rarely holds service and is instead a museum open for the public to visit.

Insider Tip: During the summer months the line to go inside the cathedral can get quite long! Make sure to arrive early or reserve your tickets online to guarantee quick access into the cathedral!

Day 1 / Stop 5 – GUM Department Store

• Why it’s awesome: This is Russia’s most famous shopping mall! It’s designed with elegant and opulent architecture and provides a real sense of nostalgia!
• Cost: Free to enter
• Food nearby: Stolovaya 57 is a cafeteria-style restaurant with a variety of inexpensive Russian cuisine menu items including soups, salads, meat dishes, and desserts. It’s also located inside the GUM department store, making it very easily accessible when you’re shopping!

The enormous GUM Department Store is located within the historic Red Square. It has a whimsical enchantment to it that sets it apart from your typical department store.

A massive domed glass ceiling lines the top of the building and fills the interior with natural sunlight. There are live plants and flowers placed throughout the mall that give the shopping complex a lively and cheerful feel! A playful fountain sits in the center, further adding to the malls inviting a sense of wonder and amusement!

The GUM department store opened on December 2, 1893. Today, it includes local and luxury stores, including Fendi, Louis Vuitton, Prada, and many more! There are numerous cafes, restaurants, and even a movie theater inside!

For a special treat, head into Gastronom 1. This 1950s-style shop sells gourmet food items, like wine, freshly-baked pastries, cheese, Russian chocolate, and of course, vodka! Also, be on the lookout for a bicycle pedaling ice cream truck with an employing selling ice cream!

The ambiance is simply amazing, a trip to this idyllic shopping mall is an absolute must on any Moscow itinerary!

You’ll explore a few more of Moscow’s historic highlight as well as some modern attractions. These sites are a little more spread out, but still very easily accessible thanks to the metro!

Day 2 / Stop 1 – Novodevichy Convent

• Why it’s awesome: The Novodevichy Convent is rich in imperial Russian history and contains some of Russia’s best examples of classical architecture!

The Novodevichy Convent is the best-known and most popular cloister of Moscow. The convent complex is contained within high walls, and there are many attractions this site is known for! 

The six-pillared five-domed Smolensk Cathedral is the main attraction. It was built to resemble the Kremlin’s Assumption Cathedral and its facade boasts beautiful snowy white walls and a pristine golden onion dome as its centerpiece. It’s the oldest structure in the convent, built from 1524 -1525, and is situated in the center of the complex between the two entrance gates.

There are other churches inside the convent as well, all dating back from many centuries past. The convent is filled with an abundance of 16th and 17th-century religious artworks, including numerous large and extravagant frescos!

Just outside the convent’s grounds lies the Novodevichy Cemetery. Here, you can visit the graves of famous Russians, including esteemed authors, composers, and politicians. Probably the most intriguing gravestone belongs to Russian politician Nikita Khruschev!

The Novodevichy Convent is located near the Moscow River and offers a peaceful retreat from the busy city. In 2004, it was proclaimed a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The convent remains remarkably well-preserved and is an outstanding example of Moscow Baroque architecture! 

Insider Tip: To enter the cathedrals inside the complex, women are advised to cover their heads and shoulders, while men should wear long pants.

Day 2 / Stop 2 – Gorky Central Park of Culture and Leisure

• Why it’s awesome: A large amusement area in the heart of the city offering many attractions!

• Food nearby: Check out Mepkato, located inside Gorky Central Park for a casual meal in a cozy setting. There are indoor and outdoor seating options and the restaurant is child-friendly!

Gorky Central Park of Culture and Leisure is a large green space in the heart of Moscow. The park opened in 1928, and it stretches along the scenic embankment of the Moskva River. It covers an area of 300-acres and offers a lovely contrast from the compact city center.

You’ll find all sorts of wonderful attractions, from boat rides to bike rentals to tennis courts and ping-pong tables, and much more! there are an open-air cinema and festive events and concerts scheduled in the summer months.  A wide selection of free fitness classes is also offered on a regular basis, including jogging, roller skating, and dancing!

Although many of the options you’ll find here are more suited for outdoor leisure during the summer, you’ll also a selection of winter attractions, including one of Europe’s largest ice rinks for ice-skating!

If you’re trying to decide what to do in Moscow with kids, the park also offers several venues designed specifically for kids. Check out the year-round Green School which offers hands-on classes in gardening and art! You can also feed the squirrels and birds at the Golitsinsky Ponds!

The park is very well maintained and kept clean and the entrance is free of charge, although most individual attractions cost money. There is also Wi-Fi available throughout the park.

With so many attractions, you could easily spend all day here! If you’re only planning a 2 day itinerary in Moscow, make sure to plan your time accordingly and map out all the areas you want to see beforehand!

Day 2 / Stop 3 – The State Tretyakov Gallery

• Why it’s awesome: The gallery’s collection consists entirely of Russian art made by Russian artists!
• Food nearby : Brothers Tretyakovs is located right across the street from the gallery. It’s a wonderfully atmospheric restaurant serving top quality food and drinks!

The State Tretyakov Gallery was founded in 1856 by influential merchant and collector Pavel Tretyakov.  The gallery is a national treasury of Russian fine art and one of the most important museums in Russia!

It houses the world’s best collection of Russian art and contains more than 130, 000 paintings, sculptures, and graphics! These works have been created throughout the centuries by generations of Russia’s most talented artists!

The exhibits range from mysterious 12th-century images to politically charged canvases. The collection is rich and revealing and offers great insight into the history and attitudes of this long-suffering yet inspired people!

All pictures are also labeled in English. If you plan to take your time and see everything inside the museum it will take a good 3-4 hours, so make sure to plan your Moscow trip itinerary accordingly! This gallery is a must-see stop for art lovers, or anyone wanting to explore the local culture and history of Russia in a creative and insightful manner!

Day 2 / Stop 4 – All-Russian Exhibition Center

• Why it’s awesome: This large exhibition center showcases the achievements of the Soviet Union in several different spheres. 
• Food nearby: Varenichnaya No. 1 serves authentic and homestyle Russian cuisine in an intimate and casual setting.

The All-Russian Exhibition Center is a massive park that presents the glory of the Soviet era! It pays homage to the achievements of Soviet Russia with its many different sites found on the property.

The center was officially opened in 1939 to exhibit the achievements of the Soviet Union. It’s a huge complex of buildings and the largest exhibition center in Moscow. There are several exhibition halls dedicated to different achievements and every year there are more than one hundred and fifty specialized exhibitions!

The Peoples Friendship Fountain was constructed in 1954 and is a highlight of the park. The stunning gold fountain features 16 gilded statues of girls, each representing the former Soviet Union republics. 

The Stone Flower Fountain was also built in 1954 and is worth checking out. The centerpiece of this large fountain is a flower carved from stones from the Ural Mountains! Along the side of the fountain are various bronze sculptures.

You will find many people zipping around on rollerblades and bicycles across the large area that the venue covers. It’s also home to amusement rides and carousels, making it the perfect place to stop with kids on your Moscow itinerary! Make sure to wear comfortable shoes and allow a few hours to explore all the areas that interest you!

Day 2 / Stop 5 – Bolshoi Theater

• Why it’s awesome: The Bolshoi Theater is a historic venue that hosts world-class ballet and opera performances!

The Bolshoi Theater is among the oldest and most renowned ballet and opera companies in the world! It also boasts the world’s biggest ballet company, with more than 200 dancers!

The theater has been rebuilt and renovated several times during its long history. In 2011 it finished its most recent renovation after an extensive six-year restoration that started in 2005. The renovation included an improvement in acoustics and the restoration of the original Imperial decor.

The Bolshoi Theater has put on many of the world’s most famous ballet acts! Tchaikovsky’s ballet Swan Lake premiered at the theater in 1877 and other notable performances of the Bolshoi repertoire include Tchaikovsky’s The Sleeping Beauty and The Nutcracker!

Today, when you visit the theater, you can expect a magical performance from skilled singers, dancers, and musicians with the highest level of technique!

If you don’t have time to see a show, the theater also provides guided tours on select days of the week. Tours are given in both Russian and English and will provide visitors with a more intimate look at the different areas of the theater!

The Memorial Museum of Cosmonautics is a museum dedicated to space exploration! The museum explores the history of flight, astronomy, space exploration, space technology, and space in the arts. It houses a large assortment of Soviet and Russian space-related exhibits, and the museum’s collection holds approximately 85,000 different items!

The museum does an excellent job of telling the full story of the exciting space race between the USSR and the US! It highlights the brightest moments in Russian history and humanity and is very interesting and fun for all ages!

The Alexander Garden

• A tranquil place to relax near the Red Square
• Green lawns dotted with sculptures and lovely water features

The Alexander Garden was one of the first urban public parks in Moscow! The garden premiered in 1821 and was built to celebrate Russia’s victory over Napoleon’s forces in 1812!

The park is beautiful and well maintained with paths to walk on and benches to rest on. The park contains three separate gardens: the upper garden, middle garden, and lower garden.

Located in the upper garden, towards the main entrance to the park is the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier with its eternal flame. This monument was created in 1967 and contains the body of a soldier who fell during the Great Patriotic War!

The park stretches along all the length of the western Kremlin wall for about half a mile. Due to its central location in the city, it’ll be easily accessible when you’re out exploring The Red Square.

It provides a bit of relief from the city’s high-energy city streets. Bring a picnic lunch, go for a walk, or just sit and people watch, this is one of the best Moscow sites to wind-down and relax!

Ostankino Television Tower

• Television and radio tower in Moscow
• Currently the tallest free-standing structure in Europe
• Make sure you bring your passport when you visit, you can’t go up without it!

For spectacular views of the city, make sure to add the Ostankino Television Tower to your itinerary for Moscow! This impressive free-standing structure provides stunning views of the city in every direction. The glass floor at the top also provides great alternative views of the city!

It takes just 58 seconds for visitors to reach the Tower’s observation deck by super fast elevator. The tower is open every day for long hours and is a great site in Moscow to check out! Travel outside the city center and discover a unique area of the city! The Izmaylovo District is a popular destination for locals and tourists alike, and one of the coolest places to see in Moscow! The two main attractions we recommend checking out are the Kremlin and the flea market.

The Izmailovo Kremlin was established as a cultural center and molded after traditional Russian architecture. This colorful complex is home to several single-subject museums, including a Russian folk art museum and a vodka museum!

Next to the Kremlin is the Izmailovo open-air market, which dates back to the 17th century! The market is connected to the Izmailovo Kremlin by a wooden bridge. Pick up all your Russian souvenirs here, including traditional handicrafts, paintings, books, retro toys, and Soviet memorabilia!

You will find many hand-made and hand-painted options available at higher prices, as well as mass-produced souvenir options at lower prices!

Museum of Soviet Arcade Games

For something a little different, check out the Museum of Soviet Arcade Games! The museum features roughly 60 machines from the Soviet era, including video games, pinball machines, and collaborative hockey foosball! The machines inside the museum were produced in the USSR in the mid-1970s.

The best part is, most of the games are still playable! Purchase tickets and try the games out for yourself! The museum also has a neat little screening room that plays old Soviet cartoons and an area with Soviet magazines! This unique attraction is a fun addition to a 3 day itinerary in Moscow, and an attraction that all ages will enjoy! 

Whether you’re spending one day in Moscow, or more, safety is an important thing to keep in mind when traveling to a big city! Overall, Moscow is a very safe place to visit. However, it is always recommended that tourists take certain precautions when traveling to a new destination!

The police in Moscow is extremely effective at making the city a safe place to visit and do their best to patrol all of the top Moscow, Russia tourist attractions. However, tourists can still be a target for pickpockets and scammers.

Moscow has a huge flow of tourists, therefore there is a risk for pickpocketing. Simple precautions will help eliminate your chances of being robbed. Stay vigilant, keep your items close to you at all times, and don’t flash your valuables!

If you’re planning a solo Moscow itinerary, you should have no need to worry, as the city is also considered safe for solo travelers, even women. Stay in the populated areas, try and not travel alone late at night, and never accept rides from strangers or taxis without a meter and correct signage.
