Silver Galapagos Review

Review of silver galapagos.

The 1990-built (as "Galapagos Explorer 2") MS Silver Galapagos cruise ship was owned by Silversea and operated by the company's "Silversea Expeditions" division. Its Silversea Expeditions fleetmates were Silver Cloud (1994), Silver Explorer/now Exploris One (2008) and Silver Origin (2021).

In 2021, the boat was sold and renamed "MANTRA".

Like all Galapagos-based cruisers, the Silver Galapagos vessel (IMO number 8708660) was Ecuador- flagged (MMSI 735057575) and registered in Guayaquil . After 2021, the ship (renamed MANTRA) was reflagged to the Bahamas (MMSI 311000960) and is now registered in Nassau .

History - construction and ownership

Silversea Cruises is a Monaco -based privately-owned cruise company and top-luxury travel brand. It was established in 1994 as a joint venture of V-Ships Monaco (fka Vlasov Group) and Lefebvre Family of Rome Italy . In 2018, RCCL-Royal Caribbean Cruises Ltd acquired 2/3rd of the company. Silversea now has a fleet of smaller-sized boutique cruise vessels with passenger capacity between 100-700. The company's business model is to operate yacht-like vessels in the industry's ultra-luxury-all-suite ship category.

The 100-passenger ship Silver Galapagos was previously sailing as "Galapagos Explorer II" for Renaissance Cruises (1989-founded/2001-defunct). The ship joined Silversea's fleet in 2013-Q3 after an interior redesign and refurbishment.

In June 2012 Silversea announced it had acquired the vessel from Canodros S.A (tour operator running Galapagos cruises). The acquisition signaled for the first time that Silversea will offer voyages in the Galapagos - the Pacific islands’ group off Ecuador's coast, famous for their unique wildlife.

On September 28, 2013, the fully- refurbished ship Silver Galapagos started its inaugural sailing for Silversea.

Just Back From…Galápagos Islands on Silver Origin

  • Peter Shanks

Peter Shanks, Silversea’s Managing Director – UK, Ireland, Middle East and Africa, has traveled to just about every possible destination — except Galapagos. Recently returned from a trip to the Ecuadorian islands, Shanks traveled to Galápagos in April, at the end of the rainy season, and shares his experiences, both onboard Silver Origin and off. He traveled with his wife, Lesley.

The last time I was so moved I cried was at the wedding of my eldest daughter, as I walked her up the aisle. Until arriving at Silver Origin, where, stepping onto Basecamp, Silver Origin’s welcoming hall, the impact of this incredible place moved me to tears again. I’ve heard that the Galápagos is a “trip of a lifetime” from friends and colleagues and it’s taken me almost 64 years to get here. What had I been waiting for?

“On our cruise around Galápagos was three life changing experiences every day: one nature, one snorkeling, one the vistas. You know when something incredible happens an involuntary noise comes out of your body? it was a burst of happiness.” –Peter Shanks

My two-week cruise around the Galápagos Islands , was an amazing journey, literally and figuratively, and I wanted to share it with you. We boarded Silver Origin off San Cristóbal and traveled two itineraries, a pair of seven-night runs. You can still absolutely get the magic in one week, and for the longer cruise there’s only one day when you overlap ports, visiting the giant tortoises at Montemar Tortoise Reserve on Santa Cruz.

First stop: Quito, Ecuador

silver galapagos cruise ship

KLM was a terrific flight option. It was a short hop from London to Amsterdam and an excellent flight to Quito where some 11 hours later we arrived into Ecuador. We added a night on to the pre-cruise overnight in Quito, curious about making discoveries there — and also to rest up for the experience-intense action we were looking forward to around the islands of the Galápagos. We stayed at the Casa Gangatena in the very heart of Quito’s old town. It’s an ancient colonial house converted into a hotel with just 32 rooms, and is right in the heart of Quito. Not long after settling in we watched from the roof terrace as the sun went down, surrounded by a confusing array of so many churches who all seem to have a different time with church bells sounding a random 10 minutes either side of the hour.

Quito Old Town is a truly foreign and cultural experience. We really only had the one full day to explore before our onward journey to Galápagos and we felt it was important to explore Ecuador’s culture. The biggest surprise? We wound up becoming immersed in Spanish culture instead. That’s because, like many South American countries, Ecuador was invaded by the Spanish, who destroyed its indigenous churches and temples to build their own on top.

Our first stop was the Casa del Aldabra Museum, a converted Spanish colonial house. The many artefacts brought to life aspects of ancient Ecuadorian cultures, their relationship with ancestors and religious ideals and rituals. I am not brave enough to include some of the more risqué figures – save to say that genitalia seemed to play a larger than life role in ancient times. It was a great introduction to Ecuador.

Talking of culture – a young woman at the museum offered to talk us through what to expect. She spoke beautiful English and I asked where she had learned it so well. ‘Pop culture’ was her answer — and that reminded me of today’s influence of films, TV, music and social media. That is where she picked up her impressive language skills.

It’s rather sad that in Quito there is little or no evidence of the indigenous people and culture of Ecuador. When the Spanish came they collected the gold and built their own churches – often on top of where original and ancient sites had stood. And there must have been a sense of ‘my church is bigger than your church’. When we looked around La Iglesia de la Compania de Jesus, we felt a need to be impressed by the amount of gold that literally covers every inch of the church. But we had a different feeling – one of how at odds all this opulent wealth is to the lines of local people each morning queuing up in the square at the Basilica and Convent of San Francisco to provide them with hot food.

Lunch was a local dish of fried pork and salad at the famous Vista Hermosa rooftop restaurant – washed down with a chilled Corona with views of the city all around us – that certainly did the trick.

A note about our choice of accommodations. All guests heading to Silver Origin have two choices of hotel. The included choice is what we describe as “simply hotel,” the J.W. Marriott. We opted to upgrade to Casa Gangatena because we wanted to be in the heart of the old town rather than the modern city.

Then onwards the next morning with an early flight to San Cristobal via Guayaquil. Interestingly, there are no direct flights from Quito to Galápagos from Quito because there is no way to refuel in the islands. Our flight was about 2 1/2 hours with a brief stop in Guayaquil.

Another note on travel logistics: To get into Ecuador from the U.K. you fill out a pretty simple form. There are more forms to enter Galápagos (officials want to make sure you come — and depart) and it was nice that a Silversea representative, who joined as at the airport, assisted us at check in (and filling out the forms) and even flew to the islands with us. We were then met by the expedition team who were waiting for us at the airport in San Cristobal.

First lesson learned: The 48 hours in Quito works, breaks up the long journey from the U.K. (it’s a six hour time difference for us — though only one hour ahead of New York)  It allows a little insight of Ecuadorian history and culture — and yet — it’s a staging post to the real prize to come.

Being there

silver galapagos cruise ship

The sight of the Silversea expedition team as we arrived in San Cristobal, with the somewhat old but effective buses waiting to transport us on the 10 minute journey down to the waiting zodiacs in the harbour, was something to behold. The expedition team looked right out of Indiana Jones and you could already feel we were in experienced hands. You don’t have to wait long – once down at the port as we boarded the zodiacs we were surrounded by a welcome party of Sea Lions and by Blue Footed Boobies dive bombing the harbour for their lunch.

And there she was – gleaming in the sunshine – Silver Origin. Arriving by zodiac and being helped up the aft landing stage into Basecamp – being handed a glass of sparkling wine and a Silversea smile – well that was when I nearly did that crying thing again. After a long journey and at the start of our ‘trip of a lifetime’ – we had arrived at one of the most incredible places in the world, full of anticipation of what lay ahead for the next two weeks.

There’s no hanging about. On the 100-passenger Silver Origin, we were all aboard and shortly after arrival, and having completed the safety drill, we set sail for Kicker Rock. The boot-shaped rock (hence the name) is one of the most iconic sites in Galápagos and the positioning and propulsion of Silver Origin kept us remarkably close. It was 6 p.m. – time for an Ecuadorian Club Prime at the deck 7 bar as the sun went down on the equator and our Galápagos adventure had begun.

Truly, the Wildlife Here is Remarkable

silver galapagos cruise ship

What’s different about Galápagos is not that you discover one new species of bird or animal at a time. It’s all around you all of the time. I am not a twitcher by any means – but the birdlife is incredible. I had of course heard a lot about the Blue-Footed Boobies – and their blue beak and feet are every bit as blue as I had hoped. They are brilliant aviators and excellent anglers. On several occasions whilst snorkelling one would dive right next to me, going several metres down to retrieve their breakfast or lunch. But I discovered there is more than one Boobie – I met the Red-Footed Boobie and the larger white Nazca Boobie.

The other species you will see a lot of is the Frigate Bird. They soar so well and look like a flashback to the dinosaur days. The males have a wonderful red balloon that comes out below their beak as part of their mating ritual.

silver galapagos cruise ship

And then of course the famous Darwin Finches are everywhere. We saw several different species. The Galápagos Mocking Birds sing beautifully, the doves are graceful, the Herons plentiful. We even caught a rare sighting of the famous Galápagos Owl – the only owl that hunts during the day. On Genovesa Island we went on a nature hike that took us right into the nesting area for boobies and frigates. The boobies were very busy gardening for twigs and branches to build their nests. The frigates had a different approach – they let the boobies do all the work then swooped down in mid-flight to grab the twigs and branches to build their own nests. We saw hundreds of nests, eggs, youngsters and a real demonstration of the ongoing breeding and fertile nature of Galapagos.

When you first come across marine iguanas you don’t quite know what to expect. We first saw them as our zodiac landed on Fernandina. There were hundreds! They were all over each other and, depending on the time of day, they face toward the sun, especially in the mornings, when they were cold. Later, when it gets warm, they turn around.

We also saw many Land Iguanas – they are a lot bigger. We were in Galápagos at the beginning of the wet season. It was April, and things were remarkably greener than you would see for the rest of the year. Definitely, the Land Iguanas had plenty to eat and looked very full and contented. They are such a flashback as they look so dinosaur-like with an amazing yellow colour. They stand regally and are in control of their environment and we often had to stand still as they were wandering down the path – taking no notice of us as they ambled past.

Birds and animals are everywhere, together, and that’s why Galápagos is so overwhelming. There are sea lions, blue-footed boobies, frigate birds. A hawk flies over you. It’s not like a safari when you’re spending six hours to get a peek at a giraffe.

silver galapagos cruise ship

The two hour nature walk on Fernandina was a highlight – it was like being transported into a David Attenborough documentary. There were so many different species thriving in close proximity, in harmony. That would be a rare find elsewhere and again, they were just everywhere. I’ve never seen anything like it.

We watched a father sea lion protect his wife and child by barking at and chasing off some younger males. We saw eagle ray fins out in the bay and sea turtles crawling out of the sea to rest in the sun. And then there was a hubbub – even our guide was excited: About 50 feet in front of us was a Galápagos Hawk and it was eating a recent catch of a marine guana. The hawk is not seen on many islands and it is right at the very top of the food tree. We stood transfixed as the hawk looked up at us – and decided to carry on devouring its prey. As we finished our two hour walk, and as the sun began to set as we boarded the zodiacs, that was my most emotional and special couple of hours in Galápagos.

At the end of the walk we stood in silence by a beautiful lagoon taking in all around us as the sun started to set. To see all that life – and death – and to see it all so close up and with so many species living in such harmony was an experience I shall never forget.

silver galapagos cruise ship

And how could I nearly forget to mention the giant tortoises. We went to the Montemar Tortoise Reserve on Santa Cruz. They are enormous; a male weighs up to 600 pounds. It was a beautiful reserve up in the highlands and very green. The tortoises can go wherever and whenever they like and everybody is in awe and respectful of them. They were nearly extinct at some stage in Galápagos but are now thriving on several of the islands which is terrific.

And if that is not enough wildlife on land, another highlight came on our last nature hike on the most southerly island of Espanola – the nesting pace for the famed and elusive albatross. We trekked across a rocky path and came across our first albatross actually sitting on the path as we passed by. That was exciting enough but moments later we were amongst hundreds of albatross – some sitting on nests, some flirting with potential partners and many soaring effortlessly above the impressive sea cliffs.

They are glorious birds – with a wingspan of some eight feet. We sat on the cliff edge watching the lively sea crashing against the cliffs several hundred feet below us – the air was full of soaring albatross, boobies and gulls whilst at the same time we were surrounded by marine iguanas. This was definitely an expedition – not least as on return to the beach we had to time our dash across the rocks to avoid the surf and jump into the zodiacs back to the ship as the sun went down.

Life at sea

silver galapagos cruise ship

Shark! On hearing that our first instinct would normally be to freeze in terror or be reminded of Jaws. Whilst deep water snorkeling in Galápagos and hearing the word ‘shark’ then it’s a case of where – can I get closer – let me see. We had seen many smaller sharks in the protected mangroves and surfing for fish in the waves close to the beach. But on this snorkel we found ourselves floating above 10 or more White Tipped Sharks – each about 6 foot long. They are beautiful creatures and looked very calm as they lurked below us.

We saw so many different fish, often swimming in large schools and taking no interest or changing direction as we swam past them. Our expedition guides led us through each snorkel – and it’s so well organised. On arrival every guest receives their dive bag – with previously sized wetsuits, flippers and snorkel. After each snorkel outing everything is cleaned and then stored down on the boarding platform by Basecamp.

On the first day there is a beach trip where all the kit can be tried out and then on most days there is a deep water snorkel. We go out by zodiac ready to snorkel led by a guide. We then prepare together and launch into the ocean, normally alongside a reef or cliff and the guide leads us through 45-60 minutes of exploration. We snorkelled with rays, sharks, penguins and sea turtles.

I had a magical Galápagos moment when surrounded by six or seven sea lions that played with me for a few minutes including a rather large male who swam right up to me, released a bubble right in front of me, and then popped it with his nose. I’d heard that in Galápagos it’s the sea lions that always steal the show and I had my own memorable close encounter with them.

At the end of the dive we would return to basecamp – with towels and hot tea waiting as we all swapped stories as to who saw what and how big it was. Only on Silversea are you welcomed back onto the landing platform by our butlers with towels, robes and a glass of sparkling wine. Guests can snorkel as often as they like and I managed it most days. I noticed that whether you were snorkeling novice or expert, the guides put everybody at ease and pointed out the many different species underwater.

Silver Origin

silver galapagos cruise ship

Our ship, which debuted in 2021, is designed for Galápagos and it does not take long for it to feel like home. Partly that’s because it’s the first ship Silversea have designed specifically for the destination – and it really works. Basecamp is where we gather, then we’re led out to a briefing on the aft deck, and walk right onto the Zodiac. Physically, it’s designed to make that whole experience of gettting on and off the ship so seamless.

As our home for the two week cruise, there were favorite aspects. I loved the view from Deck 7, the sundeck, which is completely open (except for railings of course) for 360 degree views that change three times a day. The top open Deck 7 is exactly that, with both the outdoor Grill and Bar forward and relaxing deck aft open to the incredible views. Lunch on Deck 7 is a highlight, a chance for everybody to chat through the incredible sights of the morning. Dinner at the Grill includes the optional ‘Hot Rocks’ experience as well as other choices – popular but no problem getting a reservation. The Observation Lounge right at the front of Deck 7 is a lovely quiet space with panoramic windows over the bow, comfy chairs and many books on the history, geology and wildlife of Galápagos. Up above that is the star-gazing area where after a few minutes to adjust our eyes we could clearly see the milky-way each evening.

One tip – after a busy nature walk, a deep water snorkel, or as the sun goes down – the aft Jacuzzi is just the job. The sunsets here on the equator are spectacular – and coincide with “Beer-O-Clock” at 6 p.m., a chance to reflect on each incredible day in Galápagos.

What’s Silver Origin like?

silver galapagos cruise ship

Suites are located on decks 5 and 6 and have floor to ceiling glass. The majority are Verandah Suites and jolly nice they are too, spacious, relaxing and everything you need in typical Silversea luxury. On Deck 5 they come with standard balconies and on Deck 6 with Horizon balconies which we really liked in our suite. With a Horizon balcony the suite feels larger as it goes tight to the edge with floor to ceiling glass, at the push of a button the top half slides down so your suite is open to the elements. The larger suites are to the aft and as you would expect are very spacious and special. But we found our Verandah Suite was perfect – as was our butler.

Also on Deck 6 is the small but adequate Fitness room as well as the Spa and Salon – relaxing massages after all the exertions seemed to be very popular. I was happy with all the exertions of the day – and my relaxation came with a cold beer, but my wife loved her attentive deep tissue massage at the end of a busy day.

Deck 4 has the main restaurant and the Explorer Lounge. The restaurant is spacious and open for breakfast, lunch and dinner. You must try the casuella, a bowl of fresh fish, a lunch staple — prawns, lobster, tuna and avocado. The Galápagos Slipper Lobster is very tender and you could have it as ceviche, surf and turf (with of course Ecuadorian beef). One day we had suckling pig … pretty much all the produce, meat, and seafood comes from Galpagos or Ecuador.

The wines too were lovely, hailing from Chile, Peru and Ecuador; we loved the Chilean malbec.

Moving on, the Exploration Lounge is right at the heart of the Silver Origin experience. It’s a quiet relaxing area during the day with coffee always on hand. Each evening we would all gather at 6:45 p.m., starting with a drink, a brief recap of the highlight of the day, a really interesting 30 minute lecture from one of the Expedition Team – and then a briefing as to what lay ahead for us on the following day. We learned so much from the lectures on the history, geology and wildlife of Galápagos. That was followed by dinner from 7:30 p.m.

Lastly down to deck 3 and Basecamp. That is also a hubbub of activity. As well as the informal reception area it is where we would all gather prior to each adventure. We were split into Green and Blue group, all very efficient, and we were led out in small groups to the landing stage, briefed by our guide and then safely loaded onto the zodiacs. In port, Silver Origin is always at anchor, always at sea so zodiacs become a way of life. The crew and expedition guides are very safety conscious – and we all very quickly learned the zodiac protocols and ease of getting on and off.

Here’s Why the Expedition Team Makes This an Experience to Remember

The expedition team deserves a very special mention and is right at the heart of the experience. They are trained in every aspect of Galápagos and are, variouosly, experts in nature, geology and wildlife. Many, but not all, are from Galápagos. We got to know them very well because they are with you at every moment ashore, snorkeling or on the zodiacs constantly identify the vast array of things around you. They also conduct lectures in their area of expertise each evening before dinner and are an integral part of the Silversea expedition experience.

Essentially life with Silversea in Galápagos in made up of three life-changing experiences each day – an early start but leaving you enthralled and quite emotional and reflective at the end of each day. Each day the ship will position at two different locations and sail to the second destination during lunch.

Reflections

silver galapagos cruise ship

A cruise on Silver Origin around the islands of Galápagos makes for a busy holiday packed with so many incredible sights and experiences. There is time each day to relax, and yet in Galápagos it’s best to get out to see and soak up as much as you can. The hikes and walks are typically for two hours and during each evening briefing members of the expedition team will describe how challenging each one is.

Once ashore you can grab a walking pole if you need – we did all the walks and all the snorkels as did most guests. The hikes do not cover long distances as most of the time is spent experiencing and hearing about the many sights and species around you. One thing you do need to be careful of is stepping on a marine Iguana or navigating your way past snoozing sea lions, all part of the experience.

It’s impossible to describe everything. The other fascinating aspect is the source of and volcanic nature of Galápagos over millions of years. So I will leave that, and the really interesting story of Darwin, for you to discover when you get there – and trust me you really should get there.

My advice? At the end of each day it’s good to take a quiet moment to soak up just what you have seen. For us, there were some very special moments. Swimming with playful sea lions and inquisitive penguins, coming face to face with an albatross, standing on a vast lava flow and you just have to love the Blue-Footed Boobies. The most overwhelming thing is the scale and variety of so many incredible species – and that all are living in harmony, alongside and respectful of each other.

It’s quite remarkable and an example to humble us humans.

Experiencing Luxury in the Wild on Silversea’s New Galápagos Ship

Getting up close and personal with the Galápagos on a Silversea sailing.

Apparently, I have a thing with sea lions. I learned this on my first trip to the Galápagos a decade ago when I was snorkeling and a young sea lion swam over to check me out, the way curious animals do in the remote Ecuadorian islands . On my latest visit in early March, I met up with a teenage sea lion, coming out of the water right next to my double-kayak to show off his catch of the day, an octopus.

I owe the most recent encounter in large part to the fact that I was visiting the Galápagos National Park, which protects the mostly uninhabited islands in the Pacific, on the 100-passenger Silver Origin . Since my traveling partner does not kayak, the ship’s owner, ultraluxury line Silversea Cruises , provided me with my own local naturalist guide, and it was just us exploring the mangroves when we came upon the sea lion.

On Silver Origin , Silversea’s first destination-focused expedition ship, for about $12,000 per person per week, passengers get a suite and have the privilege of visiting natural wonders from a luxurious ship.

Experiences like seeing a sea lion eat an octopus, however, are what make the cruise priceless.

Spotting sea lions is a popular pastime in the Galápagos.

What you will see on a Galápagos cruise

The Galápagos National Park is one of those unique places where the only way to explore is by water. Come here and you need to get over any notions you have that you are not a cruise person. In fact, many of the passengers I met on Silver Origin had never cruised before.

Several highly respected cruise lines sail in the Galápagos, including soft-adventure ships operated by Lindblad Expeditions and Hurtigruten (in partnership with Metropolitan Touring) and the 20-passenger Relais & Châteaux ships (complete with French-trained head chef) of Ecuadorian line Ecoventura. Debuting this summer is a 16-passenger superyacht operated by Ecuadorian-owned Aqua Expeditions , known for its river ships on the Amazon.

Several people I talked with on Silver Origin said they had chosen this slightly larger vessel because there is room to spread out and they were afraid they would be seasick on a smaller ship. Celebrity Cruises, sister line to Silversea, has a luxury 100-passenger ship, Celebrity Flora , in the market too, sans butlers.

The park limits ships to 100 passengers, and visitors can only go onshore, snorkel, or kayak when accompanied by a park-certified naturalist guide, the allowable ratio being one guide to 16 travelers. By comparison, Silver Origin has a 1:10 ratio. The fact the ship has eight inflatable Zodiacs for exploration is also a bonus—you are never landing on shore, or heading off on snorkeling or kayaking adventures, or looking for wildlife along the shoreline with more than 12 people sharing your boat.

For crowd control, and to make sure the wildlife and flora are as undisturbed as possible, where ships go is determined by the park each week, so itineraries are subject to change. When you book a week, you vaguely go either east or west. Cruise lines list itineraries, but they are subject to change.

There are some differences in the routes. The east, in my experience, offers more opportunities to see birdlife, including the notorious blue-footed boobies. My western itinerary on Silver Origin brought very exciting snorkeling—on one outing I swam with sea lions, sea turtles, colorful schools of fish, and five whitetip reef sharks. On both itineraries you’ll view many sea lions, iguanas, and giant tortoises at a nature preserve. (In the case of Silversea’s itineraries, passengers see tortoises at Montemar, a private preserve and coffee plantation on the island of Santa Cruz.)

Most visitors to the Galápagos will run into some giant tortoises.

Silver Origin ’s focus on locally sourced goods and lower emissions

When sailing in the sensitive and protected areas of the Galápagos, cruise lines have been increasingly addressing their impact and are making at least some strides to lessen it. Unfortunately, the Galápagos has yet to see such advances as ships that can operate entirely on liquefied natural gas or on battery power. But with Silver Origin , Silversea Cruises was able to cut fuel consumption by 15 percent compared to Silver Galápagos , the ship the line previously had in the market, by making changes that include specially developed diesel engines and a new hull configuration.

Another welcome development is the dynamic positioning system that allows Silver Origin to hover over delicate sea beds without having to drop anchor and disturb marine life.

Care has been taken to stock cabins with locally made beauty products including SPF 50 reef-safe sunscreen. While onboard, passengers snack on complimentary fair-trade organic chocolate from the Andes, drink organic coffee grown in the Galápagos, dine on pork raised by a local farmer who reportedly sings to his pigs, and eat fish such as the Galápagos scorpionfish, caught by local fishermen.

Locally sourced cuisine is served to the backdrop of ocean views.

What life is like onboard the Silver Origin

Luxury hotel designer Hirsch Bedner Associates is behind the soothing stone and cream interiors of the Silver Origin , a defining element of which is ample windows so passengers never miss views of the sea and volcanic islands. There are also comfortable, cushy furnishings indoors and out from which to view either the passing scenery or take in the collection of Ecuadorian-themed art and knickknacks curated by a London-based art conservancy.

The attention to detail is impressive. Everyone gathers for cocktails and a daily briefing in a windowed Explorer Lounge laid out with conversation seating areas and video screens throughout the room. The idea is if a naturalist is giving a presentation on, say, botany, you never need to strain your neck to look at the photos from wherever you are sitting.

In the windowed Observation Lounge and Library, as you sink into a club chair, you may find yourself dozing off rather than reading the book on Charles Darwin’s theory of evolution you have on your lap—the chairs are that comfortable and inviting. At night, head up to the stargazing deck to spot the Southern Cross constellation or exchange stories around the ship’s outdoor firepit.

An exciting innovation is in the Basecamp Lounge right off the marina on the lower deck. You may feel like Captain Kirk in Star Trek as you stand at a touchscreen podium that controls an entire interactive digital wall on which you can zoom into photos and videos of wildlife and factoids about the Galápagos.

For meals, passengers are dispersed between the main restaurant and a covered open-air grill so that you never feel part of a crowd. An enthusiastic head chef waxes poetic about his international- and Ecuadorian-influenced creations. A passenger favorite is the daily selection of soup-like Ecuadorian ceviche served with plantain chips and popcorn, in flavors such as tuna, fish broth and peanut paste. The chef leads a cooking class with take-home recipes. In addition to fresh fish, the vegetarian dishes, such as grilled cabbage atop celery root, are among the highlights.

There isn't a bad room—or bathroom—in the house.

There isn’t a bad room—or bathroom—in the house.

The smallest suite is a generous 325 square feet and the largest is apartment size. Two top suites can be combined for nearly 2,000 square feet of space for families or groups. All have an open-air feature, ranging from a proper step-out balcony to a balcony effect that you can create by pushing a button to open the top half of a floor-to-ceiling window.

Silversea includes nearly everything in the cruise fare—you can spend extra on a massage or blowout if you desire. A personal butler is available to answer requests should you want a bottle of Belvedere vodka or your hiking boots cleaned.

While the wildlife is what you will remember most from your Galápagos cruise aboard the Silver Origin , the fact that nature explorations are complemented by as much pampering as you can imagine onboard certainly doesn’t detract from the experience. After a day spent spotting sea lions, you will disembark your Zodiac at the ship’s marina and peel off your wetsuit, then head to your suite in a designer bathrobe provided by the waiting crew. Have your butler bring you a cappuccino or a cocktail as you relax in the ship’s hot tub watching the sun go down. Finally, you’ll snuggle into bed under fine European linens. Not a bad way to end the day.

Silversea Silver Origin Galapagos cruise

“This is not really a place you can experience from a hotel,” says Jason Liberty, the president and CEO of Royal Caribbean Group. We are in the Galapagos Islands, the highly protected volcanic archipelago some 600 miles off the coast of Ecuador where a 26-year-old Charles Darwin found the inspiration for his theories of evolution. And, in lieu of a hotel, Liberty and I are sitting on Silversea Cruises ’s new luxury expedition ship, Silver Origin , a few moments before he will lead the ship’s christening ceremony.

Royal Caribbean purchased Silvesea in 2018 and, after an initial investment in the product (which Liberty says doubled down on Silversea’s best-in-class reputation for luxury and service), its first big project was Silver Origin. Launched at the end of February, this is the brand’s first ship to be purpose-built for a specific location—meaning that for its expected 40-odd year lifespan, Silver Origin will only bring bucket-listers to these remote islands for wildlife adventures, so every aspect of the ship has taken the destination’s strict size, staffing and environmental requirements into account.

Silversea Silver Origin Galapagos cruise

The embarkation lounge at the back of the ship  Silversea Cruises

Silversea CEO Roberto Martinoli is particularly proud of the Silver Origin’s dynamic positioning, which allows the ship, with engines turned off, to maintain its orientation and angle so as not to disturb delicate marine life below. Even the lighting onboard is made, he says, in a way that will not disturb wildlife at night. Not that you’ll need any lights at all when, as we did, you pull within a few hundred yards of the Wolf volcano in full flood of an eruption, with brilliant, almost fluorescent red magma illuminating the equatorial sky near midnight and both the Southern Cross and North Star looking down on your journey.

With a max capacity of 101 passengers (making it one of the larger in the Galapagos), and higher zodiac-to-guest and guide-to-guest ratios than most other ships in the region, the ship is able to comfortably help passengers explore land and sea sites along the itinerary. The landings happen in accordance with the National Park service rules and, given the vessel’s larger size, almost always meet the sites’ max human capacity—which means Team Silver Origin will often have total privacy on an excursion. Not that you’d notice other expeditions exist when swimming with sea lions and whitetip reef sharks off Guy Fawkes or bobbing about with serene green sea turtles off San Vincente Roca, spotting the famous blue-footed booby in plentiful droves.

Silversea Silver Origin Galapagos cruise

Afterwards, you’ll be greeted back to the ship by friendly staffers proffering refreshing towels, hot Ecuadoran chocolate and iced teas. And both during and in between the walks among the Palo Santo groves on Isabela island and the visits to the Dune -scape of Bartolomé island, guests will be under the companionable on-board tutelage of the Silversea expedition guides, many of them who are from the Galapagos and have both a naturalist savant-style ability to answer every arcane question imaginable and a personable way of relating the anecdotal history of the islands and their experience of them.

Life onboard—swaddled in what Silversea CCO Barbara Muckermann calls “whisper luxury”—also helps set Origin apart. From the elegant marina/embarkation point at the back of the ship, one enters a kind of floating clubhouse hung with prints, portraits and maps from the Royal Geographical society (who sent Darwin’s Beagle expedition on its mission to map the area in 1831) and a collection of art overseen by Peter Millard & Partners. The low-slung club furniture here, bookended by glass cabinets of curiosities, have a campaign style feel, not unlike that you’d find in a luxury safari tent (though here in mushroom-y tones of taupe rather than savannah beige).

Up two flights, past the massive prints by Silversea’s partner photographer Steve McCurry, the Origin’ s version of a lounge (where the team receives briefings, lectures and aperitifs) could be mistaken for the lobby of an Armani hotel in Milan—all blousy curtains and vignettes of white leather seating arrangements with flatscreen TVs. The 51 suites, which range from slightly bigger than my Manhattan apartment to a sprawling 1200-plus square feet, also feel more like floating Milanese hotel rooms than expedition barracks, with pale wood floors, bronze-edged marble touches and swoopy, Saarinen-style furniture. Each also comes with butler service, which inspired me to go the full Poirot, getting my case full of crumpled suits and shirts pressed for dinner, asking for a Negroni-making station in the room and specifying just which of the local organic chocolate bars I would be happy to see refilled each day.

Silversea Silver Origin Galapagos cruise

The chefs source many ingredients from local purveyors like Carlos Farm on San Cristobal.  Silversea Cruises

As with the ship’s design, executive chef Carlo Bermudez’s menu is all about a sense of place and features an almost entirely Ecuadoran menu with products sourced in large part from the islands themselves (supplemented by meat, dairy and some produce from the mainland). “If it grows here, we buy it here,” Martinoli says. Chef Bermudez, who travels the Michelin-starred restaurants of the world in his off time, is particularly fond of Ecuadoran ceviches with slightly cooked proteins served in sauces somewhat richer than the Peruvian sort—think avocado or peanut bases—and he is intensely proud of the products they have been able to purchase locally. For passengers, the flavorful cuisine is yet another way Silver Origin keeps you grounded in the Galapagos, while also cocooning you in comforts.

Silver Origin offers alternating weeklong itineraries in the Galapagos; rates for a seven-day trip begin at around $11,500 per person.

Silver Galapagos Cruise

Silver Galápagos Cruise

A luxuruious expedition cruise ship with some of the best itineraries, a galápagos cruise on board the silver galapagos.

Silver Galapagos Cruise

- “Big ship” facilities with great itineraries - All-inclusive, nothing to pay onboard - All-suite accommodation - Dedicated butler service

There’s no doubting that a small yacht can have its charm, but when it comes to facilities, features and space you can’t beat a full-size ship. The Silver Galápagos is a luxury 100-passenger expedition vessel that has been fully designed to meet the needs of Galápagos touring. Her owners have made every effort to make her more than just your floating accommodation, but also an integral part of your Galápagos islands experience.

New heights in luxury

Silver Galápagos’ operators have a renowned reputation in the market as being the leading provider of luxury cruises around the world. In Silver Galápagos they continue this “best of the best” tradition, offering their guests one of the most luxurious ways to experience the Galápagos. Silver Galápagos provides stunning all-suite accommodation across her 5 decks. With 75 crew for only 100 passengers, you are assured of the highest levels of attention and service. Indeed, every suite has butler service, and staying onboard is akin to visiting the best 5* hotels.

The sumptuous suites are beautifully decorated with beige, cream and blue accents and an emphasis on light and space. All suites enjoy sea and Galápagos island views through panoramic windows, with Veranda and Silver suites benefitting from glass sliding doors opening on to private balconies. Your suite has independent climate control, plenty of storage space, marbled en suite bathrooms, flat screen televisions, minibar, and unlimited wifi. Top-end suites offer extras including complimentary sparkling wines and personal espresso machines. To put it simply, there is no finer way to enjoy all that the Galápagos has to offer.

Unrivalled space

Thanks to her size at 290 ft long and 50 ft wide there is plenty of space. With only 100 guests onboard it’s always easy to find a quiet corner. With all this space also comes plenty of facilities. As befits a mini cruise liner, Silver Galápagos is equipped with a charming library, a spa offering treatments for men and women, a beauty salon, a fitness center with world-class equipment and stunning sea views, an outdoor jacuzzi, and even a romantic art deco-style piano bar where pre-dinner cocktails are served. Your ticket is fully all-inclusive - so there’s nothing extra to pay for anything on board.

When it comes to dining, you have two choices. First is the al fresco Grill. During the evening, hot lava stones are brought to your table for you to cook your own meal exactly how you wish, choosing from a range of authentic local ingredients and produce. By day, the grill becomes an open rotisserie and gourmet salad bar, perfect for lunch.

The Silver Restaurant offers a more formal, yet still relaxed experience, with a wide range of international and Ecuadorian specialties on offer. Our favorite is the Galápagos Lobster à la Galapaguera, although a close second has to be the filet mignon with truffles. Both restaurants offer open-seated dining, meaning you can eat whenever you wish, and with whomever you want. This fits perfectly with the Galápagos vibe and makes it a delight to mingle with your like-minded fellow guests.

The Islands - star of the show

Despite the remarkable luxury offered by Galápagos Silver, she still pales in comparison to the wonder of the Galápagos Islands. With a choice of 2 seven-day itineraries and 7 National Park-approved naturalist guides, you will enjoy stunning encounters with unique wildlife and endangered habitats. Excursions include snorkeling (the ship has a dedicated snorkeling deck with all equipment), paddling sea kayaks, taking panga rides, and hikes and tours of a great range of visitor sites.

The operators pride themselves not only on the luxury of their ship but also how they showcase the best of the islands to their guests. The itineraries have been carefully designed to give you a fantastic flavor of the islands, and neither is “better” than the other. Call one of our friendly Galápagos experts today to discuss which might suit you better, and we can help you make an informed choice.

Our thoughts

Silver Galápagos is a beautiful ship. With her wonderful all-suite accommodation, we can’t recommend her more highly. Thoughtful touches are everywhere, from having your own butler to the open-seat dining arrangements to the wonderful spa treatments and great cocktails - all of which are included in your fare! With 1 crew member for every 1.3 passengers, you will enjoy the highest crew ratio in the Galápagos fleet, and it shows. Call us today, as places on this favorite ship are always selling out - often many months in advance.

Food & Drinks on board the Silver Galapagos

The food on our Galapágos Cruises is among the very best you will find in South America. Most of the on-board chefs are internationally trained and have prior experience working in the best hotels and restaurants in Ecuador and indeed around the world.

You can expect a first-class selection of food, including a good variety of fresh fruits and vegetables, locally sourced poultry and fish/seafood, rice and pasta dishes. Most boats will always include some typical Ecuadorian dishes on the menu during your cruise. If you have specific dietary requirements then these can usually be accommodated by the chef providing you have given advance notice. Please make sure you tell us about any allergies or dietary requirements you have at the time you book with us. If you leave it until you arrive at the dockside, then it may well be impossible to accommodate your needs.

Most boats serve a range of options at meal times in a relaxed buffet-style. At the first class and luxury end of the market, some boats have more formal dining where you will be served at your seat. However the atmosphere is always relaxed on board our cruises, and never stuffy or formal.

At Galapatours we love and respect the pristine ecosystems and fascinating wildlife of the Galápagos Islands, and we insist that our cruise partners do too. To protect the archipelago all our cruise vessels must have sophisticated water filtration systems, modern efficient engines, and strict maintenance schedules to minimize pollution.

The Galápagos National Park authority also defines exact cruising routes that dictate which ships can visit highlights at specific times, as well as limiting passenger numbers. These measures ensure that animals and habitats are not disturbed by too many visitors.

Our commitment extends beyond the mandatory environmental standards for cruise vessels in the region: A portion of your trip price now contributes to our Conservation Project. This initiative empowers local communities to protect their territory, engage in reforestation, and prepare for long-term environmental stewardship. This way, your trip contributes to environmental protection and truly shows how travel can be a force for good! And you can also play your part by traveling responsibly and following our Eco Guidelines during your stay. Click here to find out more about these guidelines, our commitment to sustainable tourism, and the Galápagos National Park rules.

Each evening the lounge becomes the focus for the nightly briefings from our expert naturalists, giving you all the information you could want about the wildlife in this extraordinary region. There is a well-equipped fitness room which can boast one of the best views from a treadmill or exercise bike you will ever see! Other amenities include a hot tub, ample outdoor relaxation areas and a delightful boutique for a little retail therapy. More Space for Families or Groups La Pinta’s generous cabins give you room to relax and unwind in your own oasis of calm. Every cabin features amazing floor-to-ceiling windows, keeping you connected with the ocean and the islands as you sail. The decor is fresh and modern, with clean lines and elegant fittings. For families or groups travelling together, La Pinta offers some of the most flexible accommodation around the islands - 4 of her cabins can be interconnected for your convenience. Her 20 Luxury Double/Twin and 4 Luxury Plus Triple cabins all have beds that can be joined or separated to meet your exact needs. Service and Cuisine La Pinta’s guest-to-crew ratio of 3:2 means your every need can be catered for. The food service on board is a highlight of your experience. Our cordon bleu trained Gastronomy Director ensures a wonderful menu to suit every taste, with international cuisine as well as Ecuadorian specialities. Our galley team are able to cater for any dietary requirements including vegetarians, lactose-free, gluten-free, and any food allergies. Just let us know in advance. Our comments We love the sense of space and the extra amenities the size of La Pinta offers. Don’t underestimate the delights of waking up in a cabin with full-height windows and a view of the ocean and the islands. Extra touches like wifi onboard, a dedicated medical officer and the wonderful glass-bottomed boat make La Pinta that little bit more special. The fantastic staff to guest ratio and wonderful cuisine just gild the lily that is La Pinta in our book.

Celebrity Flora Galapagos Cruise

- Brand new, launched August 2019, purpose-built, state-of-the-art - All-suite accommodation - unrivalled luxury - The highest standards of food and service - Choice of Inner or Outer Loop Itineraries Celebrity Flora has not only rewritten the book on Galápagos luxury, but she's torn it up and thrown it over the side! This stunning, purpose-built Galápagos cruise ship is the most luxurious and high-tech large yacht in the Galápagos fleet. Featuring all-suite accommodation, Celebrity Flora brings Galápagos luxury right up to date and also gives a glimpse of the future. Stunning accommodation, with the “wow” factor Every cabin on Celebrity Flora is a suite, and all feature a personal suite attendant, private balcony, mini-bar, in-room filtered water system, 24-hour in-suite service, full in-suite dining service... there's too much to list here! Every room features a state-of-the-art room automation system that brings full control of every amenity to your fingertips. Thoughtful extra touches include binoculars in your suite, sunglasses, sunscreen, lip balm, aloe vera soother, and more. There's even a pillow menu, ensuring a perfect sleep. For the ultimate Galápagos adventure, why not upgrade to a Premium or Royal Suite? For a trip-of-a-lifetime, the Penthouse Suite occupies the entire width of the ship, offering an unbroken view out across the stern from its remarkable floor-to-ceiling windows and private balcony. Other upgrade suites include "infinity balconies" - where with the touch of a button you can open your panoramic window and convert your room into a breathtaking opening onto the Galápagos. Stunning spaces to eat, relax, and unwind Social areas on Celebrity Flora are no less indulgent than her suites. The Discovery Lounge and Bar is the perfect place to relax with a pre-dinner drink. It's also where you will gather with your like-minded passengers to watch briefings from the highly-experienced onboard naturalists who will bring the Galápagos to life for you. Dining is a stand-out experience. As well as in-suite private dining you can join fellow guests in the Seaside restaurant. Here you will enjoy mouthwatering international and local specialties made with the freshest local produce, while enjoying unrivalled views thanks to the restaurant's panoramic floor-to-ceiling windows. Outside spaces are no less indulgent. Why not head up to the observation deck and enjoy a cocktail at the outside bar? Or choose from a shady or full-sun position in the outdoor lounge? For guests looking for some tranquillity, the Observatory houses a library with floor-to-ceiling windows and comfortable armchairs. Exploring the Galápagos Despite her outstanding luxury, Celebrity Flora recognises that the Galápagos Islands are the real stars of the show. Designed specifically for the islands, Flora has been fitted with state-of-the-art equipment that minimises her impact on the ecosystems, while letting you get closer than ever before. For example, she has been equipped with a Dynamic Positioning System that allows her to remain stationary without the need to drop anchors that can damage the sea bed. The dedicated Marina at the stern of the ship makes boarding her fleet of zodiacs (known in Galápagos as "pangas") quick, safe and comfortable, allowing you to spend more time in and around the islands. Guests are always accompanied by a professional Galápagos naturalist guide, with a maximum of 16 guests per guide. This ensures an intimate and in-depth experience of the islands and their wildlife for everyone. Excursions include island landings, panga rides, snorkeling and swimming, both from the ship and the shore, and much, much more. You can even enjoy an astronomical tour of the equatorial sky from the ship's unique Star Gazing platform. You have a choice of two Galápagos itineraries with Celebrity Flora - the Inner Loop and the Outer Loop. Both offer excellent experiences of the Galápagos but have their unique flavors. If you are unsure as to which would suit your needs better, please contact one of our Galápagos travel advisors today to learn more about each of them. Our Comments What can we say, other than "wow"! The Flora does re-write the book on luxury and service in Galápagos. We love her high-tech environmental systems, so crucial in protecting the delicate habitats of Galápagos. But we also love her stunning suites, fabulous service, and beautiful itineraries. It's rare you get the chance to sail on a brand new, purpose-built super-luxury Galápagos ship... so if you can, you should secure your booking right away. Oh, and if it's a special occasion cruise, do try and get either a Royal Suite or the Penthouse - they are simply remarkable.

Celebrity Xpedition Galapagos Cruise

- Big ship features but with an intimate atmosphere - Range of staterooms and suites to choose from - Excellent outdoor spaces, including hot tub - Experienced Galápagos operator and crew Celebrity Xpedition was the first of the Celebrity “X” vessels to cruise Galápagos, and her crew and operator brings with them a wealth of experience - not only in ensuring their guests’ every need is catered for, but also in giving you an unforgettable experience of the Galápagos islands. A refit in 2018 sees her return to service with enhanced facilities and beautiful decor. Wide range of accommodation choices Despite her “big little ship” size, Celebrity Xpedition has an excellent range of accommodation options. Built with a "center-out" configuration, Xpedition's staterooms enjoy endless ocean views, private en suite bathrooms, individual climate control, and tasteful modern decor. For those looking for more luxury, an upgrade to a suite will bring more space and a private balcony. For the ultimate indulgence, why not book the Penthouse Suite? Here you'll enjoy the most extensive accommodation on board, as well as a double private balcony with your own personal jacuzzi hot tub! With a capacity of just 100 passengers, you're ensured of exceptionally personal service. Xpedition is small enough to feel cosy, yet large enough for there to be plenty of places to enjoy some quiet time away from it all. Informal, welcoming, social The Panorama Lounge is the social hub of the ship. Featuring beautiful picture windows with all-around visibility, you can enjoy a well-deserved drink while sitting in the comfortable and chic sofas and armchairs and even enjoy some live music. There's also a ship's library where you can learn more about the stunning Galápagos islands or seek some peace with a novel. Outside, the sun deck features unspoilt vistas of Galápagos with plenty of recliners and comfortable seats. Or why not gaze at the stars while enjoying the open air hot tub? Meals are a highlight of any Celebrity cruise, and Xpedition doesn't disappoint. Her main restaurant features a range of international and regional specialties, and there are no set meal times - you can eat whenever suits you and your appetite. The outdoor "Beagle Grill" is a firm favorite among guests, and serves up a delightful range of grilled snacks and meals. There's a lovely informal feel on board, and this adds to the relaxed nature of a Galápagos cruise - a nice counterpoint to the many excursions you will enjoy during your trip! Unlike most Galápagos cruise vessels, onboard Celebrity Xpedition you'll find a truly all-inclusive experience. Except for just a few premium wines and spirits and beauty treatments everything else is included in your fare, including gratuities. Spend time getting to know the real Galápagos Sailing year-round, Celebrity Xpedition offers a choice of two excellent itineraries - either a Southern or Northern Loop. Both provide great excursions, and the chance to experience the distinct flavors of the Galápagos islands, its wildlife, habitats and people. If you would like help choosing which of the itineraries is best for your party, do call one of our Galápagos travel experts for help. They are real enthusiasts for the islands, as well as product specialists, and they will be able to help you choose the perfect itinerary. Thoughtful touches that are included in an Xpedition cruise include the full use of complimentary personal snorkel equipment, which includes 3mm mini-wetsuits, for the cruise duration. Binoculars are also provided for guests to use on land excursions, and walking sticks are available to aid you to scramble over some of the rougher terrain. With a maximum of only 16 guests per naturalist guide, you're ensured of a personal experience during your excursions, and the ship's fleet of zodiacs (known in Galápagos as "pangas") gets everyone to and from the ship quickly and without waiting. The water-level "marina" deck makes transfer safe and straightforward. Our comments Celebrity Xpedition is the most experienced of the Celebrity fleet in Galápagos, and this shows in the efficient operation and the attentiveness of her crew. The food on board is a particular highlight, and we love the informal "eat when you are ready" policy of her restaurants - and her dedicated outside Grill! Boasting some of the most experienced guides in the Galápagos, a cruise on Celebrity Xpedition is a fantastic way to experience the very essence of these remarkable islands while enjoying a luxurious and relaxing on board experience.

Silver Galapagos Overview

The Silver Galapagos, is designed to give passengers the most in-depth understanding of the Galapagos Islands. The ship herself is quite intimate, with room for just 100 guests. This ensures personalized service where you’ll never have to wait to be seated or sit too far back in the crowd to hear an onboard speaker. Each sailing includes a packed itinerary where the onboard experts provided by the Royal Geographical Society will educate you with background on Charles Darwin and his enduring theory of evolution. More experts will lead you on excursions on the island discovering the animals that brought his theory to life. Back onboard you will feel like you’re staying in the ritziest of hotels; your bathroom is covered in marble and your bed has Pratesi linens. At night, head to a gourmet dinner and then the piano bar.

Silversea officially names silver ray in lisbon, celebrates 30 years as a pioneer in ultra-luxury and expedition travel.

Silver Ray’s Godmother, Dr. María Josefina Olascoaga, named the second ultra-luxury ship in the Nova Class — one of Silversea's most energy efficient and spacious ship classes.

(LISBON – June 12, 2024) Today, Silversea officially named Silver Ray , the second ship in its innovative Nova Class. This continues a banner year for the brand, celebrating its 30th anniversary, marking three decades as a pioneer and leader in ultra-luxury and expedition cruise travel.

At the ceremony, Jason Liberty, president and CEO, Royal Caribbean Group, and Bert Hernandez, celebrating his first naming as Silversea’s president, addressed esteemed guests. Dr. Josefina Olascoaga, ocean scientist and the ship’s godmother, and Alessandro Zanello, the ship’s captain, officially named the ship followed by a ceremonial champagne bottle break on the ship’s hull, a longstanding maritime tradition. The celebration included a bagpipe performance — Royal Caribbean Group’s customary tradition — alongside live dance performances, and renditions of the U.S. and Portuguese national anthems.

“Welcoming Silver Ray to our global fleet represents that latest commitment from Royal Caribbean Group to continue building the Silversea brand and delivering the very best experiences in ultra-luxury and expedition travel,” said Jason Liberty, president and CEO, Royal Caribbean Group.

“It is fitting that we are celebrating Silver Ray's naming in the same year that Silversea celebrates 30 years of excellence, connecting our past with our future as we continue to lead in luxury travel and industry innovation,” said Bert Hernandez, president, Silversea. “I am incredibly grateful to all involved, most notably to Captain Zanello and his crew who will bring this ship to life, and I proudly welcome Dr. María Josefina Olascoaga to the family as Silver Ray’s  Godmother."

SILVER RAY’S GODMOTHER: DR. MARÍA JOSEFINA OLASCOAGA

Silversea announced Dr. María Josefina Olascoaga as the Godmother of Silver Ray , a longstanding maritime tradition and a lifelong title. An ocean scientist and Professor of Ocean Science at University of Miami’s Rosenstiel School of Marine, Atmospheric, and Earth Science, Dr. Olascoaga also co-leads OceanScope, a unique public, private and academic program, that equips Royal Caribbean Group ships with oceanographic instruments to collect the ocean’s vital signs. Dr. Olascoaga’s research and experience in studying ocean currents, how the ocean moves, and what that tells us, helps to shed light on how ocean conditions affect objects in the water. Her spirit of curiosity and her depth of knowledge on the ocean make her an ideal Godmother for this innovative ship.

SILVER RAY : THE SECOND SHIP IN THE INNOVATIVE NOVA CLASS

Strengthening Royal Caribbean Group’s commitment to unlocking the very best experiences in ultra-luxury and expedition cruise travel, Silversea’s Nova Class ships mark a new take on luxury at sea, introducing an unparalleled openness to the world with an asymmetrical design and 4,000m2 of exterior glass.  Silver Ray  joins her sister ship,  Silver Nova , as one of the most energy-efficient ultra-luxury cruise ships ever built, representing an important milestone on Royal Caribbean Group’s journey to net zero emissions. Due to embark on her maiden voyage from Lisbon on June 15,  Silver Ray  will spend her inaugural season in the Mediterranean before crossing the Atlantic to the Americas in December 2024.

CELEBRATING 30 YEARS OF DESTINATION LEADERSHIP IN 2024

In its three-decade history, Silversea’s ultra-luxury ships have welcomed almost 800,000 guests who have amassed roughly 13 million accumulated Venetian Society cruise days. Since pioneering the ultra-luxury, all-inclusive cruise concept with the launch of Silver Cloud in 1994, the industry-leading brand has consistently pushed boundaries to unlock unique travel experiences for its guests. Many of the brand’s early characteristics continue to set its offering apart: guests enjoy an intimate atmosphere on all-suite ships, with balconies in virtually all accommodations and some of the highest space-to-guest ratios at sea; unparalleled service standards, including butler service in every suite; a comprehensive all-inclusive offering, with complimentary drinks served throughout the ship and exceptional culinary experiences in a range of restaurants on every ship; and a wealth of immersive experiences in the most enriching destinations around the world.

Your top options for a Galapagos cruise are about to change

T wo of the best-known names in Galapagos Islands cruising , Lindblad Expeditions and Celebrity Cruises , are about to shake up their offerings in the destination in the wake of a deal.

Lindblad Expeditions on Wednesday announced that two of Celebrity's three vessels in the Galapagos will shift to the Lindblad fleet in January.

The two vessels — 48-passenger Celebrity Xpedition and 16-passenger Celebrity Xploration — will be extensively refurbished after the transfer before beginning operations under the Lindblad banner, the company said.

For more cruise news, guides and tips, sign up for TPG's cruise newsletter .

Lindblad also said the vessels would be renamed.

The addition of the two new vessels, which Lindblad is purchasing for an undisclosed sum, will double the size of the Lindblad fleet in the Galapagos from two to four vessels, making it one of the largest players in Galapagos cruises.

For years, Lindblad has operated two ships in the region: 96-passenger National Geographic Endeavour II and 48-passenger National Geographic Islander II.

The brand offers six different itineraries around the Galapagos, with more than 100 departures a year.

"We recognize and appreciate the immense privilege our company has to operate and grow our expedition cruise offerings in the Galápagos Islands," said Sven-Olof Lindblad, founder and CEO of Lindblad Expeditions. "By sourcing well-appointed vessels and onboarding the most experienced crew and staff who meet our exacting standards of responsible exploration, we're able to transport guests from around the world to the iconic archipelago and help them understand the importance of protecting and preserving its wonders and wildlife, as a consequence of their personal experience."

Lindblad was one of the pioneers of expedition cruising in the Galapagos more than half a century ago. Notably, it operated the first nonscientific international civilian expedition to the destination in 1967.

The company has also long been a leader in expedition cruising in other parts of the world, sailing to some of the most remote and hard-to-reach destinations, including the Arctic, Antarctica and Australia's Kimberley region.

With the addition of the two Celebrity vessels, Lindblad's worldwide fleet of owned, leased and chartered ships will grow to 19 vessels.

Lindblad said on Wednesday that customers would be able to make bookings for the two new vessels starting later this month. Lindblad didn't say when the first sailings for the ships under the Lindblad banner would be.

With the transfer of two of its three Galapagos ships to the Lindblad fleet, Celebrity's footprint in the Galapagos will decline significantly. The line's sole remaining ship in the region will be 100-passenger Celebrity Flora.

Unveiled in 2019, Celebrity Flora is one of the newest, biggest and most elegant vessels in the Galapagos.

Celebrity's expedition-style Galapagos sailings, which have taken place on very small vessels, have been a bit of an outlier for the brand. Celebrity is better known for more traditional cruises operated by much larger vessels.

Celebrity and its sister brand, Silversea Cruises , have been leaders in Galapagos voyages for many years. Silversea currently operates one large ship, the 100-passenger Silver Origin, in the Galapagos. It is considered the most upscale vessel in the destination.

Built on a similar platform, Celebrity Flora and Silver Origin are two of the biggest ships in the Galapagos. The destination limits the number of people who can sail on a Galapagos cruise to 100 per voyage.

Spacious suites and expansive views: What to know about Silversea Cruises' new ship

silver galapagos cruise ship

Silversea Cruises is celebrating its 30th anniversary with the launch of a new ship.

  • The 728-guest Silver Ray, the second in the line’s Nova Class, was officially named in Lisbon, Portugal, on Wednesday.
  • The ship will spend its first season in the Mediterranean before moving to the Americas in December.

The luxury line’s newest vessel, Silver Ray, will set sail this weekend. The 728-guest ship, the second in the line’s Nova Class, was officially named in Lisbon, Portugal, on Wednesday.

“It is fitting that we are celebrating Silver Ray's naming in the same year that Silversea celebrates 30 years of excellence, connecting our past with our future as we continue to lead in luxury travel and industry innovation,” Bert Hernandez, the line’s president, said according to a news release .

The vessel’s launch follows sister ship, Silver Nova , which joined the fleet last year.

Where will Silversea’s new ship sail?

Silver Ray will spend its first season in the Mediterranean before moving to the Americas in December. The ship’s 12-day maiden voyage , departing on Saturday, will sail from Lisbon to Civitavecchia, Italy, with stops including Cádiz and Palma de Mallorca in Spain; St. Tropez in France; and Monte Carlo, Monaco.

What can guests expect on board?

Like Nova, the ship features a distinct asymmetrical design. The off-center pool – uncommon among cruise ships, which generally center their pools – helps bring occupants closer to the water, and offers more expansive views. The vessel’s roughly 43,000 square feet of exterior glass bolster that openness.

The new Master Suite and Signature Suite categories will make their debuts on Silver Ray. Master Suites range from around 720 to nearly 830 square feet and offer sweeping views from their location at the corner of the ship’s aft (there’s also a two-bedroom configuration). The Signature Suites have plenty of room as well: their 700 square feet includes 172 of balcony space, along with dining and living areas.

Other features include the line’s S.A.L.T. Chef’s Table – available only on Nova and Ray – with small plates featuring regional cuisine and wine and cocktail pairings.

How much does Silver Ray cost?

Prices vary by sailing date, room category and other factors, but an 11-day cruise from Venice to Athens currently starts at $7,750 per person based on double occupancy for the line’s essential fare. That option features standard inclusions like food and drinks like champagne and premium spirits, but excludes shore excursions.

Are luxury cruise ships worth the money? We did the math for Silversea's Silver Nova.

The port-to-port fare, which includes shore excursions, starts at $8,400, while the door-to-door price, which includes those plus airfare and transfers, starts at $10,200.

Best Cruise Ships in the World The Gold List 2024

Celebrity Beyond Arrow

Cruise ships often get compared to floating hotels or resorts, but here’s one that feels like a floating Vegas show. Applause, please, for the glittering peacock made from Swarovski crystals and the Magic Carpet platform that shimmies up and down the ship, cantilevered over the water for some of the best seats in the house, while in the Martini Bar, a troupe of bartenders juggle shakers to the sound of “We Didn’t Start the Fire.” Beyond is one of the largest ships in Celebrity’s Edge class, and all that space is used to maximize the drama. A whole corridor is filled with a glowing installation of bronze sculptures reflected in infinity mirrors; a favorite anchorage was Eden, a beautiful, biophiliac bubble for hiding away in, watching the ship’s wake through triple-height windows and dawdling in swivel chairs that resemble green carnations. As for the cast, there are some stellar performers: Kelly Hoppen designed most of the interiors; Daniel Boulud’s debut signature restaurant at sea, Le Voyage, has an impeccable, globe-trotting menu alighting on Brazilian moqueca and tamarind prawns. But top of the bill is Captain Kate McCue, the first American woman to captain a cruise ship. A captain hasn’t been this synonymous with their ship since the days of Merrill Stubing; follow her social media for a glimpse into the art of ship navigation. During our short, prelaunch cruise, we had an itinerary that involved looping round and round the Isle of Wight—a short trip, but one that was big on sheer spectacle. Three-night sailings from $300 per person. —Rick Jordan

Delfin II. Amazon

Delfin II Arrow

The Amazon River has the opacity of chocolate milk and is almost deathlike in its stillness—which is wild when you consider how much life thrives there. It was on a nine-day journey through Peru with Lindblad Expeditions and National Geographic that I learned this, as we spent five of those days exploring the jungle by boat. Our chariot: the Delfin II , a Relais & Châteaux vessel with 14 thoughtfully appointed staterooms.

Most days began with a crack-of-dawn skiff ride soundtracked by the squall of jewel-winged, dusky-headed parakeets. The photographers pulled out their football lenses and the birders gasped from behind their binoculars as naturalists pointed out an elegant snowy egret picking its way through a mudbank, a neotropic cormorant spreading its gothy black wings like a vampire, and the somber Jabiru stork, the largest flying bird in South America, standing like a dour English butler on a naked tree limb. Also flagged were capuchin monkeys, giant river otters, flamboyant bromeliads, and—after dark—scores of caimans and capybaras.

We spent one muggy morning in a Kukama village, where indigenous women wove raffia bowls and cooked catfish, and another morning paddling the river—an outing which culminated with a pod of pink river dolphins leaping from the water mere feet from our kayaks. (Even our seen-it-all naturalist, Sandro, clapped like a schoolgirl.)

This deep in the Amazon jungle, there were no other tourists. When we did see signs of human life, they were usually fishermen or park rangers. And because there was no Wi-Fi on the Delfin II and a near total blackout on cell reception, downtime was spent attending lectures on Amazonian ecology, sampling native fruits (how the aptly named ice cream bean hasn’t been pitched on Shark Tank yet, I’ll never know), and buddying up to the ship bar, where I made fast friends of fellow guests. (Expedition cruises always draw a fascinating lot; my cohort included a microbiologist, metaphysical transcendentalist, and one of the earliest Apple employees.)

The highlight of the trip, however, was hiking through the jungle with a local tracker who showed us a brown-throated three-toed sloth, Goliath bird-eating tarantula, junior anaconda, and a century-old strangler fig. When we finally emerged from the bush, we were treated to a spectacular tangerine-and-charcoal sunset punctured by bolts of lighting. It was surreal and intense, just like everything else in this untouched corner of the world. Eight-day sailings from $5,730 per person. —Ashlea Halpern

Ritz-Carlton Evrima Arrow

Ritz-Carlton’s first foray into cruising, the Evrima is a hotel-at-sea experience that might just be the antidote to all the big ship itineraries. Think ultra-small ship luxury (at half the capacity of the Seabourns and Regents) with plenty of scenery options to choose from—the European Mediterranean (routes from Turkey to the Canary Islands) from spring through fall, and the Caribbean (San Juan to St. Barts) in winter—and a younger crowd than most of the luxury cruise market; mostly culture lovers with a dearth of cruising experience who can't wait to get ashore to the Côte d’Azur village restaurants. The 624-foot ship is the first in a fleet of three emerging over the next few years, and it still feels spacious with 149 suites, two pools, a cigar humidor, six bars (the interior Living Room and top-floor Observation Lounge, The Bar, and bars located at the Marina Terrace, the Pool House, and Mistral), a beauty salon and spa deck, water-level marina terrace with water toys, and a fitness center. The 246 staff range from deck crew to your cabin’s personal concierge, all of whom are dubbed the ship’s Ladies and Gentlemen—but titles feel almost superfluous aboard Evrima , where everyone from the tender drivers to dining leads will pause to actually get to know you and recall your name and story (and even your drink order) to make the entire experience feel organic and warm. It’s almost like you’re spending the night in someone’s home, which just so happens to be a 624-foot mega-yacht. And the Evrima itinerary has plenty of free time and overnight ports of call in its sailings, so you can head ashore for a day, or even an entire evening late into the night—gallivanting, dining, and imbibing with the new friends you'll no doubt meet onboard. Seven-night sailings from $5,800 per person. —Shannon McMahon

Oceania Marina Arrow

Is there any Marina passenger who doesn’t wish—even for a second—to confine himself to his stateroom on debarkation day? Perhaps only the smarty pants who booked their next cruise before this one ends. Otherwise, how can an epicurean cruiser (that’s Marina ’s crowd) not pine for another shot at the new wine list starring 80 highly coveted, hard-to-snag labels, including swoon-worthy Super Tuscans? You’ll long for one more brag-worthy chance to sip The Mascot, a label from Harlan family pedigree (think cult fave Harlan Estate); the Polo Grill’s deft sommelier knows exactly which prime steak pairs best. Despite eight compelling complimentary restaurants (Red Ginger’s signature lobster pad thai is still a must-devour), Marina vibes far more than great meals. Work up a sweat storm playing pickleball on deck 16 or braving core conditioning in the gym. Melt into a marine detox wrap (I love the juniper and lemon scent) at Aquamar Spa + Vitality Center, then sink into the spa terrace’s bubbling hot tub. Get down and dirty in the artist loft by painting a Venetian mask and playing Impressionist. In the hands-on culinary center, learn to cure a fish or preserve a lemon. Come May 2024, Marina debuts a splashy redo. Fall in love again with revamped avocado toast—bravo to the taco-spiced shrimp topping—in the new wellness-driven Aquamar kitchen. Where you lie your head hardly matters. An entry 291-square-foot stateroom starring a four-pillow, soft-sheet bed feels mighty spacious and sports Bulgari shampoo. That said, the top-to-bottom penthouse suites’ glam reno is beyond covetable, from the expanded bath to a boatload of enviable perks. Ten-day sailings from $1,999 per person. —Janice Wald Henderson

Trollfjord Arrow

Who better to guide you through Norway’s most remote reaches—including the Svalbard archipelago, the northernmost inhabited islands on the planet—than a Norwegian cruise company that knows the area’s every crag and fjord? Hurtigruten is an Oslo-based line whose ships have traversed these waters since 1893, ferrying freight, mail, and passengers to the communities along the rugged coast. In 2023, to celebrate its 130th anniversary, the company’s flagship, the newly refurbished, 500-passenger MS Trollfjord (named for a fjord in the Vesterålen archipelago) began sailing two hybrids of its original 34-port Norwegian Coastal Express, calling at several of the towns and villages on the original route. From September through April, the North Cape Express (a 13-day, 16-port itinerary) sails from Oslo to the North Cape and then south to Bergen. In the summertime, the Svalbard Express’s eight-day journey begins in Bergen and progresses north, with extended port calls and excursions in seven towns before entering the Arctic Circle and pulling into Longyearbyen, a mining town on Spitsbergen, Svalbard’s main island. On both routes Trollfjord offers its (mostly European) passengers an uncommon way to explore the region, with uniquely Nordic cultural touches to connect them to the country. There’s a pre-boarding spread of Norwegian fare in the ship’s departure lounge, and Trollfjord ’s three restaurants prioritize Scandinavian cuisine (salmon, reindeer, and lingonberries, oh my!) and the food culture of the indigenous Sámi people. The ship’s 277 staterooms and 12 suites (with walk-in closets, corner bathtubs and floor-to-ceiling windows) offer a cozy retreat from the sometimes-harsh weather. And typically Nordic diversions such as aquavit tastings, oceanview saunas and polar plunges leave you in no doubt about where you are and who you’re sailing with. 10-day sailings from $3,082 per person. —Sarah Greaves-Gabbadon

Cruise Ship Regent Seven Seas Navigator

Seven Seas Navigator Arrow

Imagine the most luxurious hotel you’ve ever stayed in. That’s precisely what stepping onboard the Regent Seven Seas Cruises Navigator feels like. And while the opulence and grandeur shine through every square inch of space, it’s worth mentioning that the staff are what make the experience memorable, remembering your name, preferences, likes, and dislikes from the second you step afoot the eight-deck vessel.

The 248 ultraluxe all-suite accommodations feel like your home away from home—despite their capacious interiors—and your personalized steward makes sure of that with thoughtful touches from the moment you check in. Thanks to a revamp in 2019, the ship feels pristine with a new library—complete with a faux fireplace—and sleek state-of-the-art furnishings (including the cruise line’s bespoke mattresses and bed linens) in each of the rooms. However, what makes the Navigator stand out from its counterparts is its intimate size, as it’s the smallest in Regent’s fleet. Everything onboard feels just an arm’s reach away, and you’ll quickly bond with fellow passengers after spending the day together on one of the complimentary shore excursions, such as tours by local guides, cooking classes, and other intimate adventures.

During my Mediterranean voyage, days were spent immersing ourselves in new cities, whereas nights began with a freshly shaken ice-cold martini followed by an exuberant dinner, with a stop in the Seven Seas Lounge for whatever was on tap that night, ranging from cabaret to karaoke. At the end of the journey, I left wanting more and with a suitcase full of clean clothes, thanks to one of the many attentive touches onboard: the included laundry service. 10-night sailings from $3,360 per person. —Rachel Dube

Seabourn Ovation Arrow

“We are not the Rat Pack,” quips Andrew Pedder, the witty Yorkshire-born captain of Seabourn Ovation. He's referring to himself and the other senior officers, for any guests who may have wandered into their impromptu panel session instead of the musical show taking place later that evening. The Q&A—which covers everything from the prettiest ports to the number of Champagne bottles typically consumed during a seven-day voyage—is part of a last-minute program of activities arranged for an unexpected sea day when it’s too windy to dock in the South of France. This is mid-October, on one of the ship’s jaunts around the Mediterranean for the season, and no one seems to mind the change of plan (although when we do explore, all the islands we visit—Menorca, Corsica, Elba—are blissfully tourist-free). It simply means more time for spa treatments, soaks in the outdoor hot tubs, and afternoon tea in the observation bar. Even then, it only feels like there are 60 passengers onboard, rather than 600. The restaurants are excellent, from Sushi, where you can sit at the counter watching the Japanese chefs at work, to poolside Earth & Ocean for Tandoori-style rotisserie chicken and Madras-style white bean cassoulet. Suites are spacious, each one with a balcony. West End–standard entertainment includes a magician and a chart-topping classical singer. But what makes this ultraluxe ship really memorable is the relaxed, on-point service by staff who remember your name and coffee order, or even a familiar face from a sailing five years ago. Seven-day sailings from $2,649 per person. —Emma Love

The Restaurant Silver Endeavour

Silver Endeavour Arrow

Silversea is defined by its far-flung itineraries and exceptional onboard service (think Moët Champagne as you take in an iceberg calving in Antarctica). But the 220-passenger Silver Endeavour, new to the fleet and already a classic, raises every bar. Rooms start at a spacious 356 square feet and have luxury perks like pillow menus and a personalized bar, making them the best in all of Silversea’s array of ships. As far as food goes, premium Ars Italica Osetra caviar is complimentary and around-the-clock, though the Dover sole paired with a label from the rare wine menu at La Dame would have you believing you were in Paris. And the signature Otium spa celebrates pampering as much as it does wellness—don’t skip on the oxygen-boosting Golden Radiance facial. You may find yourself at any given hour glimpsing ice walls through the Drake Passage and remembering that the best part about this ship is the awe-inspiring places it dares to take you. 10-day sailings from $13,150. —Janice Wald Henderson

Scarlet Lady Arrow

Although new to the cruise industry, Virgin Voyages has already begun to set itself apart from its predecessors. When first stepping on the Scarlet Lady, cruisers are met with a rousing, upbeat staff that serve as gurus around the ship and are experts on everything from beauty to juicing. While the Scarlet Lady takes you on a familiar route around the Caribbean, the on-shore excursions available are what make this sail memorable. Take a leap of faith on daring outings such as the Waterfalls of Damajagua in Puerto Plata, where guests make their way down seven of the 27 natural slides and waterfalls. After the exhilarating experience, travelers can sit down with locals and come together over Dominican staples such as pollo guisado, tostones, and mangú. You can always get local delicacies while docked, but while onboard, you must snag a reservation at the Test Kitchen. It’s an experimental dining experience where the menu always evolves. You go in only seeing a small card with ingredients listed for the night’s meal, but everything else is up to the imagination. One might find cucumbers puréed and frozen into ice cream as dessert, or beets formed and prepared like steak. While en route to the next port, the hard reset one does at the Redemption Spa leaves your body feeling anew; it’s impossible to come back from vacation feeling the same as when you departed. On any Virgin Voyages ship, you’ll love the indulgent atmosphere, whether you’re catering to your sweet tooth by narrowing down your favorite gelato of the day, grabbing a drink at one of the five bars that stake claim to having the largest tequila supply on the seven seas, or finally getting that tattoo you’ve been thinking about for ages after visiting the ship’s tattoo parlor, Squid Ink. Seven-day sailings from $2,100 per person. —Paris Wilson

Queen Mary 2 Arrow

Six days sailing from England to New York across the vast Atlantic had the potential to bore me to stupefaction, but it turned out I had nothing to fear. “The ship is the destination,” said an entertainment director for Queen Mary 2 , who oversees a program that makes this cruise liner the undisputed hub of creative and intellectual stimulation on the high seas. Where else can you attend the annual Literature Festival At Sea, meeting top fiction and nonfiction authors like the late PJ O’Rourke, Bernadine Evaristo, and Louis de Bernières? And where else can you visit a planetarium, watch a Royal Shakespeare theater production, or hear guest speakers discuss artwork investments and the history of airport drug mules?

In between spa massages and table tennis rallies, I nourished my mind in the mahogany library before nourishing my body at the Princess Grill and Queens Grill restaurants, scarfing dishes like croquette of suckling pig, paired with excellent vintages and followed by mango panna cotta. On the final stretch of the journey, as dolphins leapt over the horizon and the Statue of Liberty loomed into view, my heart sank a little—New York City awaited, yet I didn’t want to disembark. That’s quite an achievement. Seven-day sailings from $1,389 per person. —Noo Saro-Wiwa

World Navigator Arrow

During my first few hours aboard the Atlas Ocean Voyages World Navigator, I felt a bit like I had inadvertently crashed a family reunion: Seemingly everyone else aboard this Arctic expedition had just sailed to Antarctica on the Navigator six months before, so several crew members and guests spent much of embarkation day hugging and catching up. With a maximum occupancy of 196, it’s already an intimate ship, but the fact that the relatively young brand, which debuted in 2019, could develop such an impressive number of repeat travelers in such a short spell speaks volumes. Many told me they were drawn to Atlas because of its eco-friendly bona fides (the new-build ship makes use of hybrid engines from Rolls-Royce designed to leave minimal impact), but the creature comforts on board certainly help. While the star attraction of such an expedition voyage is what lies beyond the decks—access to remote Antarctic fjords that larger vessels can’t dream of traversing, or spotting polar bears loping along pearly glaciers in the Arctic—I made the most of my time in between Zodiac expeditions. The multi-jet shower in my stateroom was sublime after damp and rigorous treks, the heated massage beds in the only L’Occitane Spa at sea are a dream, and the Arctic summer’s 24 hours of sunshine made the Dome observation deck a prime perch to cozy up with a book at any time of day or night. There was neither internet nor cell phone connectivity during my entire eight-day journey sailing thanks to the remote latitudes (though Atlas guests now have access to full Starlink satellite coverage), which meant this was the longest I’d been offline since the 1990s—and yet somehow, drifting through the surreal landscape in this cosseting bubble, I didn’t miss scrolling or chatting with the outside world one bit. Seven-night sailings from $4,749 per person. —Sarah Khan

Westerdam Arrow

A passenger who is well below senior age dances the robot to classic rock, to R&B, to country music, and to disco hits as talented singers and a live band perform most nights in the Rolling Stone Lounge, on Holland America Line’s Westerdam . His mechanical movements are a source of amusement and encouragement; if he can take over the dance floor, so can we with our own moves. The 1,916-passenger Westerdam is beloved as a traditional cruise ship, with its smaller-than-mega-ship size, deep blue hull, wraparound outdoor promenade deck, and details such as fresh flowers all around, celebrating the 150-year-old cruise line’s Dutch roots. Tradition does not mean staid. There’s rock and roll. There’s a trendy top-of-ship pickleball court.

On an Alaska cruise, my husband and I start our days with a jolt of caffeine via the baristas at Explorations Central, the ship’s cushy, contemporary, forward-facing observation lounge, before heading off on adventures such as joining other passengers in synchronized paddling a large canoe to see the ancient yet diminishing ice of Juneau’s Mendenhall Glacier. Back on the ship, we indulge in excellent burgers, topped with Gouda and applewood-smoked bacon and served in fast-food wrapping from a stand at the covered Lido pool. We enjoy sustainable Alaska seafood—grilled salmon, fennel-crusted halibut, fried cod—in between cocktails made with local gin, served on real glacial ice. From the veranda of our classic aft cabin, mesmerizing views of the ship’s wake, seemingly endless forest, and a distant, blue-tinged glacier clear our brain. We’re ready for more of the dancing man. Seven-day sailings from $379 per person. —Fran Golden
