Visit SF State - Who We Are

San Francisco State University is one of the nation's leading public urban universities. Promoting respect for scholarship, freedom, and human diversity, the University's faculty and administration encourage students to ignore traditional barriers. Here students learn by helping people solve real-life problems, take part in research projects with senior faculty, collaborate with classmates, and explore future personal horizons and career pathways.

Our faculty put teaching first.

Teaching is what SFSU is all about -- it's what we do best. Here students are guided and encouraged to find their own way, to speak up and express themselves. Our instructors are interested in their students' success -- and they are accessible. We offer ongoing support through advising, learning assistance, and career counseling.

When you walk across our campus, you experience the world.

San Francisco State represents an exceptional range of ethnic groups, cultures, ages, values, and life experiences. Sixty-seven percent of our undergraduates are students of color, as are 40 percent of our graduate students. Some of your fellow students will arrive right out of high school; others will arrive with extensive professional experience. This mix of people leads to stimulating discussions both in and out of class; you will learn not only from your professors but also from other students.

SFSU is an institution that cares about its community.

At SFSU, students learn outside of classrooms and laboratories; they learn in the vibrant community of the Bay Area itself. Through service learning programs and courses, our students have made a difference in the real world, working to improve city housing projects, bringing music instruction to city schools, helping immigrants prepare for citizenship tests, and supporting a health clinic in San Francisco's Mission district for low-income residents. By taking part in these or similar projects, you can work, study, and contribute at the same time.

SFSU has one of the best locations any student could ask for.

We're in San Francisco, where you can find an awesome view and unexpected thrills over every hill. Ride cable cars, explore authentic ethnic neighborhoods, hang out at downtown clubs, visit traditional or alternative music and theatre venues, or stroll through eucalyptus groves in city parks. What's more, San Francisco and nearby Silicon Valley comprise the nation's high tech capital and the home of biotechnology. If you want to get a jump on tomorrow's job market, San Francisco is the place to be.

Music | Review: Acclaimed country act performs 1st Bay Area show in over 14 years

Brooks & dunn finally returned to shoreline amphitheatre.

Brooks & Dunn -- Kix Brooks, left, and Ronnie Dunn -- who performed at the All for the Hall concert benefitting the Country Music Hall of Fame and Museum in Dec. 2023, brought their Reboot 2024 tour to the Shoreline Amphitheatre in Mountain View on June 7. (Jason Kempin/Getty Images archives)

“We are glad to be back in California,” he said. “We have had some of the greatest parties of our lives in this place.”

And Brooks and his longtime musical partner Ronnie Dunn would have yet another one as the platinum-plus-selling duo —  known as Brooks & Dunn — finally brought the Reboot Tour to Shoreline Amphitheatre for some rip-roaring fun on Friday night (June 7).

The approximately 12,000 fans in attendance acted like they’d been counting down the days for this event to happen — and, indeed, a goodly portion probably had been — as evidenced by the way they hooted and hollered, boot-scooted and, of course, boogied through one big hit after another during the 19-song set.

It was the first time that Brooks & Dunn performed in the Bay Area since 2010, which was the same year that the “Boot Scootin’ Boogie” duo originally called it quits on a career that was highlighted by an amazing 20 No. 1 country singles. Five years later, they’d regroup for a lengthy residency with the legendary Reba McEntire in Las Vegas, which nicely set the stage for a full-on reunion tour that was suppose to begin in 2020.

Then COVID hit, of course, which pushed back Brooks & Dunn’s Reboot Tour (and pretty much everything else entertainment related). Fast forward another four years and — well, you can understand why Bay Area fans were so excited to finally get their reunion with the Grammy-winning duo.

Backed by a rock-solid seven-piece band, Brooks & Dunn were in primetime ’90s-era form throughout the roughly 90-minute set. They wasted no time in getting the party started as they opened the show with one of their best — “Brand New Man” — the anthemic title track from the twosome’s landmark debut of 1991.

The 71-year-old Dunn, wearing mirrored sunglasses and a baseball cap on backwards, was in particularly good voice as he crooned through “Brand New Man,” “My Next Broken Heart” (from that same debut album) and “Red Dirt Road,” the title track from the duo’s 2003 album that resulted in one of the evening’s most passionate audience sing-alongs at Shoreline.

“‘Red Dirt Road’ is my favorite song that Ronnie and I ever wrote together,” said the 69-year-old Brooks, signing off on the crowd’s exuberant reaction to the power ballad.

Although not on the same level as a singer as Dunn, Brooks would also deliver a handful of highlights during the show, including a lovely version of the ballad “You’re Gonna Miss Me When I’m Gone,” which was the sole selection of the night from 1994’s “Waitin’ on Sundown.”

Turning the corner on the midpoint of the set, Brooks & Dunn pushed down on the accelerator as they belted out such party favorites as “Hard Workin’ Man,” “Play Something Country” and “Rock My World (Little Country Girl).”

The highlight of the entire show came with “Believe,” which — with due respect to Brooks and others who might prefer “Red Dirt Road” (or something else) — is the finest song in the duo’s catalog. Dunn put his all into this glorious country-gospel number, leading the congregation of 12,000 as the striking lyrics unfolded:

“I raise my hands, bow my head / I’m findin’ more and more truth in the words written in red / They tell me that there’s more to life than just what I can see”

The group followed up that breathtaking moment with a sweet version of “My Maria” to close the main set, then returned to give the crowd exactly what it wanted — the line-dancing crossover smash “Boot Scootin’ Boogie” — during an encore that also included the patriotic hit “Only in America.”

1. “Brand New Man” 2. “Put a Girl in It” 3. “My Next Broken Heart” 4. “Mama Don’t Get Dressed Up for Nothing” 5. “We’ll Burn That Bridge” 6. “You’re Gonna Miss Me When I’m Gone” 7. “Ain’t Nothing ‘Bout You” 8. “Red Dirt Road” 9. “Lost and Found” 10. “Hard Workin’ Man” 11. “Play Something Country” 12. “Cowgirls Don’t Cry” 13. “She Likes to Get Out of Town” 14. “Neon Moon” 15. “Rock My World (Little Country Girl)” 16. “Believe” 17. “My Maria” Encore: 18. “Boot Scootin’ Boogie” 19. “Only in America”
