Benefits of Educational Visits

Why London? Well, just like a book isn't judged by its cover, this city's vibrant ambience, multiculturalism, and iconic architecture cannot be appreciated from a textbook alone. Not only does a trip to London offer engaging activities for students, but it's also an unparalleled platform for cultural exploration.

The city's unique blend of historical landmarks and world-class museums provides an immersive learning experience that cannot be replicated in a classroom. With every corner turned, there's a new opportunity for learning outside the traditional four walls of the school. From the grandeur of the Tower of London to the technological advancements showcased at the Science Museum, these sites offer educational value that encourages curiosity and enhances knowledge.

Visiting these sites not only provides subject-focused learning but also a fantastic way to spark interest in a breadth of topics from science and history to arts and culture. It's not just about the facts and figures; it's the tangible experiences, the stories behind the exhibits, and the atmosphere that create memorable experiences for students.

The benefits of school trips extend beyond academics as these trips also contribute to students' personal development. They learn to navigate new environments, work as a team, and expand their horizons.

So, when planning your next school trip, remember that London is not just a city, but a bustling, interactive classroom waiting to be explored.

Planning and Preparations

Let's dive into the nitty-gritty of orchestrating a successful educational journey, focusing on the crucial planning and preparations! With careful consideration of these elements, you're well on your way to creating a memorable educational journey for your students.

Firstly, Accommodation. London offers a vast array of choices from vibrant hostels with quirky, bright, and fun interiors to 3* hotels located in the heart of the city. Make sure you select a place that's comfortable, secure and conveniently located near the educational sites you'll be visiting.

Whilst it’s often convenient to be centrally located, some of our favourite accommodation options are located on the outskirts of the city – often providing cheaper options and better-quality facilities.

All accommodation we use has been risk assessed and are STF assured . All assured accommodation adheres to a rigorous Code of Practice and Safety Management Standards that are verified each year. You can therefore relax knowing you’ll always be heading to accommodation that meets these standards.

Next is transportation logistics. For large groups, our full-executive coaches are a convenient and cost-effective option that can not only transport you to and from your UK educational institution but around the city too - so long as it’s within the coach driver’s hours ! Don’t worry – we always plan our itineraries around these hours to ensure you can make the most of your time in London, with your coach driver also getting their entitled rest. If you plan well in advance, you can also get discounts on train tickets.

As for educational objectives, your London itinerary should include activities, sites, and attractions aligned with your curriculum. You can view our full list of these on our website here . This enhances the learning experience while keeping the trip exciting and engaging.

Exciting Itineraries

Crafting an exciting itinerary is the heart and soul of any successful educational journey. London, a melting pot of culture, history, and innovation, provides an array of exploration options that cater to every subject. With over 170 museums in London including 11 National museums, it’s sometimes tricky to know where to begin.

Here's a list of some subject specific destinations that could spark the curiosity of your students:

  • Science and Technology : Explore the wonders of human ingenuity and bring science to life at the Science Museum. Boasting a plethora of exhibits that are ever-changing, there’s guaranteed to be something for everyone here. If you prefer something smaller, there are the Centre of the Cell and Body Worlds museums to consider too.
  • Psychology and Sociology: Go inside the family home of history’s most well-known psychologist - Sigmund Freud - and discover the story of psychoanalysis or visit the famous Old Bailey Court House.
  • History : Dive into the prehistoric era and learn about the evolution of life on Earth at the world-class Natural History Museum or delve into some of the darker history with a Jack the Ripper Walking Tour.
  • Arts and Design : Experience the magic of creativity at the Victoria and Albert Museum, boasting the World's largest museum dedicated to the arts. Similar museums include Tate Modern or the National Gallery, or if you’re looking for something more niche there’s The Cartoon Museum or Camden Street Art Tour!
  • Geography: Step off the streets and onto the water with a Thames River Cruise, learning about the 215-mile stretch of river that runs through Southern England, or explore the Royal Botanic Kew Gardens.
  • Business and Economics : Take a look at the skyscrapers within London’s financial center with a Canary Wharf Tour. The likes of HSBC, Citigroup, Wells Fargo, Barclays, and many more have set up their headquarters or central offices here. Boasting impressive transport links, Canary Wharf is now easier than ever to reach with the brand new, Canary Wharf Elizabeth Line station.
  • Film and Media Studies: Wow your students with a world-class West-End Show or go behind the scenes to see how it all happens with a trip to the London Film Academy or the Guardian Newsroom Workshops.

Safety and Security

Ensuring everyone's safety and security is paramount when planning an educational trip. In a bustling city like London, it's a crucial aspect that teachers and organisers must consider. You have to think about risk assessments, emergency procedures, supervision guidelines, and even transportation safety. Not to forget, setting up clear communication protocols is a must. For peace of mind, you can explore our in-depth Safety and Insurance policies here.

In the unlikely event of a crisis, having a well-thought-out plan could be a real lifesaver. Provide everyone with emergency contact numbers and familiarise them with evacuation routes. We also offer an Emergency Phone Line, so you can get into contact with us whilst on your trip, 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.

Supervision guidelines are equally crucial. You need to ensure students are never left unattended. Establish a buddy system or break students into manageable groups with assigned supervisors. That way, you create a safety net around them.

Communication protocols should be in place to keep everyone informed and updated. Use group chats or social media platforms to share information quickly and efficiently. To help this easier, we have partnered with Vamoos – an app to keep all your travel documents in one place. This includes your itinerary, excursion tickets, weather forecasts, and maps. Once all of these documents are downloaded, you don’t need data to access them!

So, when you're organising that school trip to London, remember, safety isn't just a box to tick. It's a commitment to your students' well-being and a vital part of a successful educational journey.

We will ask for your dietary requirements once you book your trip and pass this onto any meal bookings, we make for you.

What strategies can teachers use to keep students engaged during the trip?

To keep students engaged during a trip, teachers can implement interactive activities. They can use the surroundings as a canvas for scavenger hunts or educational games. School groups are entitled to free entry at special exhibitions, which are often accompanied by a range of learning resources and teachers’ previews.

2. Tate Modern

Housed inside a former power station on the banks of the Thames, the Tate Modern is Britain’s national showcase for contemporary art.

3. National Gallery

Pupils can take photos by the Trafalgar Square lions before visiting the National Gallery, which is filled with European paintings from the 13th to the 19th centuries.

Catering for pupils aged four to 18, gallery educators can lead fun, interactive sessions which aim to bring the paintings alive by encouraging school groups to look, think and imagine.

Curriculum-linked events, workshops, hands-on activities and a teacher support service can help you get the most out of your school trip.

This iconic attraction can be used to exemplify aspects of learning, whether in specific areas such as Design & Technology, Architecture and Engineering; or more broadly to promote numeracy and literacy, commercial or community issues.

Free School Trips & Bursary Places

Providing financial assistance for school visits.

Can it really be possible to go on a trip for free? Well aside from your transport costs, there really are places you can visit without any cost to the children. Visit any of the great historical venues run by English Heritage, the natural outdoor sites managed by the RSPB or the WWT, or a number of other great UK venues, and as long as you are happy to lead the trip yourself, your class can get in for free!

Some venues do require you to book ahead of time, and we always recommend that school groups get in contact to discuss any requirements. These venues are super helpful and have lots of experience in helping you get the most out of your visit.

The benefits gained when children are given learning opportunities outside the classroom cannot be overstated. We strongly believe that school trips should be available to everyone, not just those who can afford it.

Take a look below to find a good range of completely free school trips as well as plenty that offer bursaries, or use the purple form so that we can help find a suitable trip for your school. Alternatively, we may be able to source funding for you if your request is for an educational day trip: M7E Funding

Short on time? Get some suggestions

Let us find free or bursary options experience for your school trip.

Free Visits

Bursaries, perhaps established by wealthy philanthropists, charity fund raising, or generous donations, are put in place to help disadvantaged school groups. Summer Term Trips

1 July 2024

Trips Header

Throughout the Summer Term, students have enjoyed an array of enriching experiences with over 25 trips designed to broaden their horizons and enhance their learning outside the classroom.

Highlights have included, the annual Year 7 Residential Trip to Warwick and Birmingham, and Year 9 students embarked on their Residential Trip to Edale, immersing themselves in outdoor adventures and environmental studies.

Year 10 students showcased their resilience and teamwork by completing both the practice and qualifying Duke of Edinburgh (DofE) Bronze Expeditions, demonstrating their readiness to take on challenges and develop new skills. The school’s commitment to providing diverse opportunities for all students was further exemplified by the success of our Year 9 VEX Robotics finalists, who had the extraordinary opportunity to compete in the World Championships held in Dallas, Texas.

Over the holidays, the music department and our talented musicians are setting off to Italy for the bi-annual music tour. This tour will allow them to perform in various prestigious venues but also to experience the rich cultural heritage of Italy. Simultaneously, Year 10 German students are also looking forward to enhancing their language skills and cultural understanding as they head for a week-long stay in Berlin.

Despite the busy exam season, academic departments ensured that the broader enrichment programme remained robust. Students attended numerous theatrical productions, including “A View from the Bridge,” “The Cherry Orchard,” and “A Long Day’s Journey into Night,” providing them with valuable insights into literature and drama. Additionally, girls had the opportunity to visit a variety of cultural and artistic exhibitions, including the British Museum’s Michelangelo and the National Gallery’s Caravaggio exhibitions, which deepened their appreciation of art history.

The enrichment did not stop there; students also attended conferences on cutting-edge topics such as sports and artificial intelligence, fostering a spirit of intellectual curiosity and innovation. A culinary trip to a local Chinese restaurant allowed students to explore different cuisines and cultural practices, rounding off a term filled with diverse and stimulating activities.

UK election latest: Cabinet announced - as Reform wins fifth seat after Farage speech sabotaged

Sir Keir Starmer has named the bulk of his cabinet, with Rachel Reeves the first female chancellor. Rishi Sunak said "sorry" to voters as he resigned as Tory leader. His party endured a torrid election night, with the Lib Dems (71 seats) and Reform (five seats) making big strides.

By Tomos Evans, Wales reporter

The first minister of Wales has said it’s important to "take stock" of the results in Wales after a surge in support for Reform UK.

Labour won 27 out of 32 seats in Wales, but the party's overall vote share here dropped by 3.9%.

Reform finished second in nearly half of Labour's seats in Wales – 13 in total – and increased their vote share by 11.5%.

"I think all of us need to take stock of the results," Vaughan Gething told Sky News. "But the [Senedd] election in nearly two years' time has not been fought yet.

"We look forward to going into that with a record of delivery from the last 25 years and more.

"But much more than that, to renew faith yet again with the people of Wales, not to take them for granted, and to have a really positive offer about what we can do for Wales.

"We have always stood up for Wales, I look forward to doing that again and showing real ambition for our future."

'Feeling on the doorstep has been very, very different'

But Mr Gething said Labour had turned a corner after a "devastating" result for the party in 2019, crediting that with Sir Keir Starmer's leadership.

"[His leadership is] a really big factor in why people have chosen to trust the Labour party again," Mr Gething added.

"2019 was a devastating defeat for us. I remember knocking doors through the cold and the rain and the dark, and knowing the election results wouldn’t be good.

"This time around, the feeling on the doorstep has been very, very different."

Plaid Cymru won four seats for Wales and secured their best ever vote share at a general election, while the Liberal Democrats won back the seat of Brecon, Radnor and Cwm Tawe.

David Lammy has outlined his first priorities as foreign secretary, saying he wants to "see a reset on Europe, a reset on our relationships with the Global South and a reset on climate".

He also says he wants to see "some gearshifts" on European security and global security "given all the problems we're seeing in the Middle East", as well as to "centre our foreign policy on British growth".

Addressing a question on whether Labour's position on Gaza lost the party seats, he says: "Clearly, many people across our country are distressed at the images that we have been seeing from Gaza over many, many months.

"All of us want to see an immediate ceasefire, and I will do all I can diplomatically to support Joe Biden in bringing about that ceasefire.

"We also want the hostages out, and we want unfettered aid to get into Gaza. And in the end, we must work towards that two-state solution and have a clear path to progress."

Asked if he regretted describing former US president Donald Trump as "a woman-hating, neo-Nazi sympathising sociopath", Mr Lammy says: "I will work with whomever the United States chooses to be their next president."

Buckingham Palace has released footage of the new prime minister's meeting with the King earlier today.

Keir Starmer met the monarch not long after Rishi Sunak popped in to formally offer his resignation.

"Your Majesty," said Sir Keir after being escorted to see him.

"You must be utterly exhausted and nearly on your knees," he replied.

Sir Keir looked to play down any exhaustion, but acknowledged it's a "quick change over" between prime ministers.

"To say the least, and you're having to get to grips with everything straight away," said the King.

"Must be quite exhausting..."

Sir Keir went along with it this time, simply replying "yes".

Jo Stevens has been made Wales secretary.

Ms Stevens won her seat in Cardiff East with a majority of 15,833, taking home a 40.5% share of the vote.

She was one of the Labour Party's most fervent opponents of Brexit and voted against the party whip to vote in favour of a second referendum in 2019.

Ian Murray has been appointed the Scotland secretary.

Mr Murray is generally well-liked across the party and played a key role in helping revive Labour's fortunes in Scotland.

He has been shadow secretary for Scotland since 2020.

Before that, he was shadow minister for trade and investment under Ed Miliband.

It appears that weeks of slipping off paddleboards, bungee jumping and tackling assault courses have paid off for Ed Davey.

The triumphant Liberal Democrat leader has earned his party its highest number of seats ever, making it one of the big winners of last night.

The Lib Dems' record 71 seats (up a whopping 63 on the last election) saw them oust four cabinet ministers and also deny the Tories success in constituencies once held by former prime ministers David Cameron, Theresa May and Boris Johnson.

Ministers toppled - and chancellor almost beaten too

Former education secretary Gillian Keegan, former justice secretary Alex Chalk, former culture secretary Lucy Frazer, and former culture secretary Michelle Donelan all lost out to Lib Dem candidates.

Ms Keegan's Chichester seat had been held by the Conservatives for a century.

The Lib Dems also narrowly missed out on toppling Jeremy Hunt in his Godalming and Ash constituency, which would have seen a chancellor lose their seat for the first time in a general election.

Only 891 votes kept Mr Hunt in his seat.

The party had particular success in Surrey, winning the safe Tory seats of Surrey Heath and Woking.

Sweet Caroline makes a fitting anthem

They also had success flipping the ultra-safe Conservative seats of Stratford-on-Avon and Henley.

It is a vindication of the party's tactic to focus on target seats, many of which were "blue wall" seats in the south and southwest of England.

By this morning, it became clear the Lib Dems had reached a historic milestone, beating their previous record of 62 seats.

A jubilant Mr Davey - who celebrated by dancing and singing to Sweet Caroline - told supporters: "Well, we've heard you – loud and clear. We've put your concerns at the heart of our campaign."

Hilary Benn is the new Northern Ireland secretary.

The veteran Labour MP was comfortably re-elected in the Leeds South constituency, taking home a 54% share of the vote.

Mr Benn has held that seat since 1999 and has made a name for himself for supporting the Iraq war while serving in Tony Blair's government.

He then defied former Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn when he made an impassioned speech in the Commons supporting military action in Syria.

The 70-year-old was secretary of state for international development from 2003-2007 under Tony Blair and was shadow foreign secretary from 2015-2016 before losing this role after a failed coup against Mr Corbyn.

Last September, Mr Benn was appointed shadow secretary of state for Northern Ireland.

Lisa Nandy is Sir Keir Starmer's secretary for digital, culture, media and sport.

The 44-year-old won her seat in Wigan with a majority of 9,549 votes, taking a 47.4% share of the vote.

Ms Nandy finished third in the leadership race that followed Jeremy Corbyn's decision to stand down after the 2019 election.

She was appointed shadow foreign secretary by Keir Starmer and stayed loyal after two demotions.

Her most recent role was as shadow cabinet minister for international development.

Our chief political correspondent Jon Craig says Ms Nandy has been "bounced around the shadow cabinet with all sorts of jobs over the years".

He says when he asked her if she was happy with her new role she gave him "one thumbs up".

"I said 'really' and she gave me two thumbs up," Jon adds.

Steve Reed has been made secretary of state for environment, food and rural affairs.

The 60-year-old won the Streatham & Croydon North constituency with a majority of 15,603.

He was one of the founders of the Labour Together group which helped banish the hard left from the party.

Mr Reed was the leader of Lambeth Council from 2006-2012 before he became an MP.

He was shadow secretary for communities and local government from 2020-2021 and has been shadow secretary of state for environment, food and rural affairs since September 2023.

SNP leader John Swinney admitted his party will have to "face up to the realities of the situation" after his party dropped dozens of seats.

The SNP lost 38 of the 48 it won in 2019 - which was a major blow to Scotland's first minister and his unwavering desire to pursue another independence referendum.

With all but one of the 57 Scottish seats declared this morning, Labour hold 37 seats, the SNP nine and the Conservatives and Liberal Democrats each have five.

A recount in Inverness, Skye and West Ross-shire has been delayed until Saturday - this is because there was "discrepancy between the number of verified votes totalled and provisional counted votes".

Mr Swinney described the election result as the SNP's worst since 2010 and said they would need to "build the trust and confidence of the public".

Mr Swinney became the SNP's third leader in just over a year in May, following the resignations of Nicola Sturgeon and Humza Yousaf.

He joined the party at 15 years old, and previously led the party from 2000 to 2004.

Mr Swinney had previously said if his party won a majority of seats in Scotland he would try to open Scottish independence negotiations with the London-based UK government.
