How to Plan the Perfect Trip to Sarasota, Florida

Sarasota sits on Florida's Cultural Coast — here's how to plan the perfect visit.

Jacqueline Dole is a freelance food and travel journalist based in Maine. A lifelong New Englander, her work has appeared in Travel + Leisure , Food & Wine, TimeOut, Insider, Thrillist, Eater, and more. With a background as a pastry chef, she’s always on the lookout for the next best snack. She is a theme park enthusiast and expert, and embroidered hotel robes, amazing pools, and hot dogs are some of her favorite things.

Best Hotels and Resorts

Best things to do, best restaurants, best time to visit, how to get there, neighborhoods to visit, how to get around.

With more than 35 miles of coastline, ample outdoor activities, and a variety of historical attractions, Sarasota is ideal for the traveler who wants both culture and white-sand beaches. Those who visit the city on Florida’s Gulf Coast will enjoy world-class aquariums, botanical gardens, and even a museum dedicated to acrobatics. No wonder it's one of the best place to retire in the U.S.

Erin Duggan, CEO and president of Visit Sarasota County , explains, “I love the year-round arts and culture scene. There's always a performance, festival, special exhibition, or new museum or gallery to explore. Beyond that, I love walking around the various districts and shopping, stopping for a bite, and enjoying the weather and lovely people.”

Visit Florida

Tammy Hauser, founder and CEO of Discover Sarasota Tours , adds, “We have a remarkable number of professional theaters, dance companies, music organizations, performing arts halls, museums, circuses, and even an opera company. Recently, I learned there are more professional arts offerings per capita here in Sarasota than there are in NYC.”

Top 5 Can’t Miss

  • Book a room at Art Ovation Hotel and enjoy live music and an art gallery in the lobby, plus a lively rooftop pool. Don’t miss the complimentary shuttle service to the beach, complete with lounge chairs and a portable cooler.
  • Spend an afternoon at The Ringling and see everything from a Venetian-inspired mansion to a miniature reproduction of the Ringling Bros. and Barnum & Bailey circus.
  • Pick a spot along the coast to enjoy an afternoon in the sand and sea, or rent a kayak to explore the shoreline.
  • Order some cold stone crab claws at Walt’s Fish Market, a Sarasota institution that has been operating since 1918.
  • Catch a show at the art deco style Van Wezel Performing Arts Hall. This Frank Lloyd Wright Foundation landmark is set directly on Sarasota Bay and hosts everything from traveling Broadway shows to ballet.

Courtesy of Ritz Carlton

Art Ovation Hotel

Art Ovation Hotel is a boutique property in the heart of downtown Sarasota. Flaunting an extensive art gallery, live music, and a rooftop pool, it sits steps away from attractions like the Sarasota Opera . The hotel offers a complimentary shuttle to nearby Lido Key Beach, which includes a set of chairs and a portable cooler. The rooms even come with a sketchbook and ukulele for guests who want to channel their inner artist during their stay.

The Sarasota Modern

Located in the Rosemary District, The Sarasota Modern is an architectural stunner. “The hotel pays homage to Paul Rudolph, a pioneer of the Sarasota School of Architecture during the years he lived in Sarasota in the 1950s,” says Hauser. Less than four miles from Sarasota Bradenton International Airport, the hotel comes with complimentary bicycles, a plunge pool, a hot tub, and a pool.

The Ritz-Carlton, Sarasota

For visitors seeking luxury, The Ritz-Carlton, Sarasota offers access to an on-site spa, a championship-level golf course, and the exclusive Beach Club on nearby Lido Key. The oceanfront property is not situated directly on the sand, but it does feature a complimentary shuttle that transports guests the three miles to the shore.

Longboat Key

There’s a reason why Travel + Leisure readers ranked Longboat Key as one of their favorite islands in the U.S. this year. Lido Beach and Siesta Key are also fantastic options, boasting fine white sand and stunning views.

Mote Marine Laboratory and Aquarium

Located on City Island, the Mote Marine Laboratory & Aquarium is a world-class indoor/outdoor facility that houses manatees, sharks, sea turtles, otters, and more than 100 other marine species. The space offers touch pools and viewable labs that allow guests to peer into the working world of the researchers on site.

Marie Selby Botanical Gardens

The 45-acre Marie Selby Botanical Gardens has two campuses. The downtown Sarasota campus features 15 acres along Sarasota Bay, including a bayfront mangrove walkway. This space will also soon be home to the world’s first net positive rooftop restaurant, featuring an edible garden and plantings that will showcase some of the plants researchers at the Selby study.

The Ringling

The Ringling is an expansive 66-acre estate made up of several museums and attractions. Guests can wander the property and visit the Ca’ d’zan, a Venetian-inspired waterfront mansion that was once the home of John and Mable Ringling. The Circus Museum features the world’s largest collection of miniatures — more than 42,000 pieces that give guests a peek into the history and early days of The Ringling circus. The John and Mable Ringling Museum of Art consists of the original 21 galleries that opened to the public in 1932, a James Turrell installation, and other traveling and resident exhibitions.

Jacqueline Dole/Travel + Leisure

Outdoor enthusiasts can spot manatees on a Siesta Key kayak tour and enjoy the shore along one of six islands lining Sarasota's coastline. The newly opened Bay makes the most of Sarasota's public space by transforming 53 acres of city-owned land into an expansive park with a full schedule of activities, from free kayak tours to outdoor movies under the stars.

Sarasota Ballet

There's no shortage of live shows to enjoy in Sarasota — the area is part of Florida's Cultural Coast, after all. Guests here can visit the Sarasota Ballet , the only professional ballet company on the Gulf Coast; the Westcoast Black Theatre Troupe , one of only two professional black theater companies in Florida; and the Sarasota Opera , which is located in one of the most historic venues in the city.

Discover Sarasota Tours

Discover Sarasota offers 90-minute trolley tours multiple times a day that acquaint visitors with the city’s layout, history, neighborhoods, and more than 48 places of interest.

Owen's Fish Camp

Located in a cottage built in 1923, Owen’s Fish Camp specializes in fresh seafood and Southern classics. The space includes a lush outdoor courtyard and is even home to a banyan tree that was given to the restaurant's namesake — Owen Burns, a prominent Sarasota developer — by Thomas Edison.

Walt's Fish Market

Walt’s Fish Market is a Sarasota institution that serves up conch chowder, stone crab, and a menu full of freshly caught seafood straight from the Gulf.

Whitney's

Located in a converted 1950s garage, Whitney’s is a delight for modern design enthusiasts. It offers an all-day menu, weekend brunch, and live music.

O'Leary's Tiki Bar & Grill

Sink your feet in the sand and enjoy a tropical drink at O’leary’s Tiki Bar & Grill . With live music daily, this low-key waterfront spot in Bayfront Park is the perfect place to relax and enjoy the sunset.

The fall is the best time to visit Sarasota for great weather, smaller crowds, and lower humidity. While hurricane season in Florida runs from June through November, it peaks between August and September, so keep this in mind when planning a trip.

“My favorite month to be here is November. The weather is ideal, the crowds are minimal, and everything is open.” says Hauser. Duggan echoes this sentiment, saying, “I’m a big fan of fall because you still have warm days with the occasional breezy day in between.”

The Sarasota Bradenton International Airport, located just three miles from downtown, is the most convenient destination for quick transport to and from the city. Sarasota is under two hours south of Tampa International Airport and 2.5 hours west of Orlando International Airport — keep in mind traffic in the area fluctuates greatly throughout the day, so the closer the airport, the better.

If you’re planning to drive to Sarasota, consider finding accommodations with parking. The city can experience a good deal of traffic, and between public transportation and ride-share services, it’s often more convenient to skip driving yourself.

Downtown Sarasota

Downtown Sarasota is the center of the city's arts district, with a number of galleries, theaters, and museums. The area hosts a weekly farmers market , bakeries, and Bayfront Park, the best place to watch the sunset in Sarasota.

Siesta Key is a barrier island off the coast of Sarasota, best known for its award-winning beach. Outdoor enthusiasts can enjoy bike tours, boat rentals, snorkeling, and more.

St. Armands Circle

St. Armands Circle began as a passion project of John for Mable Ringling, who wanted to build a destination within the community where visitors and residents could shop, live, and thrive. True to the city's roots, Ringling used circus elephants to haul the timbers that were used to construct the causeway and bridge to connect St. Armands Key to the mainland.

Unless you’re driving to Sarasota, consider skipping the rental car here. “Avoid parking and driving if you can — Ubers are easy to get and reduce all the stress. There's a lot of traffic in season and finding parking is a challenge.” says Hauser.

In addition to ride-share services, The Bay Runner is a complimentary open-air trolley that provides service seven days a week. It runs until midnight, with stops between Lido Key, St. Armands Circle, and downtown Sarasota.

Sarasota County also offers a bus system, SCAT . While the bus has a slightly limited schedule, routes offer stops near can’t-miss attractions, like the John and Mable Ringling Museum of Art, Lido Beach, and the Marie Selby Botanical Gardens. Visitors can purchase one-way tickets in addition to one-day, seven-day, or 30-day passes.

The beauty of Sarasota, FL is that it can be enjoyed year-round and is visited by thousands of vacation-goers throughout every season.

Sarasota Vacation: Day 1

  • Arrival Day!
  • Check in to your Sarasota accommodations and get settled in.
  • In the evening, drive to Bayfront Park . Park your car there and spend time strolling along the seaside and through the park.
  • From Bayfront, walk to Owen’s Fish Camp and enjoy local seafood for dinner.

Downtown Sarasota

We never recommend planning too much to do on the first day of a family vacation. Arrival day (Day 1) should consist of checking in to your lodging and getting acquainted with your immediate surroundings.

Get to know the local area before venturing out to explore and experience the sights and attractions that draw you away from your overnight accommodations.

Determine where you will get your morning breakfast and coffee. Are there late-night bars and restaurants nearby? Do you have access to the amenities that you’ll need throughout the week?

Finally, check out the onsite pool and work-out facility, or nearby beach and park trails in order to establish what to do during your downtime, and where to get in your daily exercise.

Downtown Sarasota & Bayfront Park

Downtown Sarasota is located directly on Sarasota Bay and is a lively area filled with restaurants, shops, and galleries. It is also home to Bayfront Park , an awesome, clean park with walking trails, a children’s splash pad, panoramic ocean views, and amazing sunsets.

Enjoy your evening here by parking at Bayfront Park (free!) and strolling around the paved trails. You will be in awe of the beautiful luxury homes, cars, and yachts that line the Bay.

Afterward, walk .4 miles (8 minutes) to Owen’s Fish Camp for dinner.

Owen’s Fish Camp is an awesome beach-bungalow-style restaurant with a casual, laid-back atmosphere, and an amazing menu. When there, be sure to try the market-fresh oysters and jambalaya while sipping cocktails on their outdoor patio.

Unconditional Surrender statue in Sarasota, Florida

Additional planning tip: As of January 2021, Sarasota’s iconic Unconditional Surrender statue has been moved to Bayfront Park (between O’Leary’s Tiki Bar & Grill and Marina Jack). Be sure to grab a photo op of this iconic statue!

Sarasota Vacation: Day 2

  • Head to Lido Beach for a beach day!
  • On your way there, grab donuts and coffee at the Five-O Donut Co .
  • Bring a picnic lunch to enjoy on the beach.
  • Head back to your hotel and relax by the pool.
  • Take a Tropical Sunset cruise with LeBarge Tropical Cruises .
  • Afterward, wind down with live music, dinner, and drinks at nearby O’leary’s Tiki Bar And Grill .

The best Sarasota vacation itinerary from Top US Family Travel Blog, Travel With A Plan.

The highlight of Day 2 during your Sarasota family vacation is spending the day at the gorgeous Lido Beach .

The sugary-white sand and clear turquoise water found here are what draw families and vacation goers to Sarasota year after year.

Along with bringing your vacation beach essentials , plan to pack a picnic lunch to eat under the shaded pavilions, or to purchase and enjoy snacks from the Seabreeze Concession.

The full line-up of amenities offered at Lido Beach includes:

  • Year-round lifeguards
  • Public restrooms and outdoor showers
  • (Free) 400 car parking lot
  • Concessions and gift shop
  • Handicap-accessible observation deck
  • Beach umbrella and chair rentals
  • Shaded picnic tables and pavilions

Families may also enjoy these additional amenities at Lido Beach:

  • A heated swimming pool (for a small fee)
  • Playground equipment

Additional planning tip: Lido Key Beach is just a short walk to  St Armand’s Circle  where there are cafes, restaurants, and shops that you may want to explore.

The best Sarasota vacation itinerary from Top US Family Travel Blog, Travel With A Plan.

Sarasota Vacation: Day 3

  • Spend the day outdoors!
  • Take a morning guided kayak tour of the Sarasota mangrove tunnels .
  • Head to lunch at the Old Salty Dog (City Island location).
  • Visit the Mote Aquarium , which is next door.
  • Check out the fishing piers behind MOTE and watch boats pass by.
  • Tour the Marie Selby Botanical Gardens .
  • Drive 1 mile from the botanical gardens to Mandeville Beer Garden for dinner, craft beer, and a fun atmosphere (large kid-friendly outdoor garden area).

The best Sarasota vacation itinerary from Top US Family Travel Blog, Travel With A Plan.

Sarasota Mangrove Tunnels

The Sarasota mangrove tunnels are so unique to this area, that you just have to experience them while you’re here.

Mangroves are an amazing collection of tangled shrubs and roots that form interconnected tunnels perfect for kayaking or paddleboarding through.

Once inside the mangroves, you’ll see the Florida ecosystem at its finest as you’ll get to see fish, crabs, jellyfish, and native grasses beneath the crystal-clear waters.

Dolphin and manatee sightings are also very common when on the outskirts of the mangrove tunnels, which ends up being an exciting addition to your adventure.

Though you can go kayaking in Sarasota without a guide, I recommend utilizing a tour company, such as top-rated Kayaking SRQ Tours and Rentals to assist with your experience.

SRQ provides the kayak, paddle, and lifejackets for both kids and adults, as well as fits you with a double kayak if you have kids who are too young to paddle on their own.

Additional planning tip: You do not need any kayaking experience to do these excursions. All of the tours start with a short paddle lesson and the entire tour takes place in protected bodies of water (for easy paddling).

Mote Aquarium manatee

Mote Marine Laboratory & Aquarium

Mote Marine Aquarium is a must-do during your Sarasota vacation!

The aquarium features over 100 species including sharks, manatees, sea turtles, seahorses, and stingrays. There are also octopuses, sea jellies, anemones, and corals.

Similar to our visit to the Great Lakes Aquarium in Minnesota , our kids loved the up-close animal encounters and touch pools at Mote Aquarium.

Additional planning tip: Nice to know is that you can visit Mote Aquarium rain or shine as all of the exhibits can be viewed from undercover spaces.

Sarasota Vacation: Day 4

  • Spend the day on Siesta Key!
  • Start off by grabbing donuts at Meany’s Donuts .
  • Lounge and play on Siesta Beach (Grab an award-winning sandwich at Anna’s Deli if you have time).
  • Spend the evening in Siesta Key Village browsing the shops on Ocean Boulevard .
  • Enjoy “Big G’s Happy Hour”, live music, and dinner at Siesta Key Oyster Bar (located in Siesta Key Village) or visit one of the many other amazing Siesta Key restaurants !
  • Grab a waffle cone at Big Olaf Ice Creamy , or a drink at the Daquiri Deck afterward (also in the village)!
  • Watch the sunset at Sunset Point (Siesta Key Beach Access #2).

The best Sarasota vacation itinerary from Top US Family Travel Blog, Travel With A Plan.

Siesta Beach

Siesta Beach, also known as Siesta Key Beach, is the most popular beach in the Sarasota area. Likewise, it was rated the #1 beach in America by TripAdvisor users in 2015, 2017, and 2020.

This is such a phenomenal place, that we’ve also created an entire Siesta Key family vacation itinerary that you don’t want to miss!

The full line-up of amenities offered at Siesta Key Public Beach includes:

  • First aid center with lifeguards on duty year-round
  • Public restrooms and showers
  • 800 car public parking lot
  • Full-service snack bar and gift shop
  • Picnic areas with and without cover
  • Gazebos and shelters that can accommodate 60-120 people.

Families can also enjoy all the following sporting activities at Siesta Key Beach:

  • A tennis court complex
  • Volleyball courts
  • A 20-station fitness trail

Additional planning tip: Here’s a complete breakdown of where to park when visiting Siesta Beach, as parking can be tough.

Oh, and don’t forget to check out our much-talked-about article on the Best Beach Bags for Moms !

Siesta Key Village

Siesta Key Village is a hip hub of beachy bars, restaurants, shops, and sport rental outfitters (for the beach and land). The Village is located in the center of the island, only a few city blocks from the ocean.

Spend time here strolling the sidewalks, shopping for souvenirs, and taking in the sights while enjoying the company of other tourists.

You will run into several options for fun bars and restaurants and live music, which is why visiting Siesta Key Village is at the top of the list of the best things to do in Siesta Key !

The best Sarasota vacation itinerary from Top US Family Travel Blog, Travel With A Plan.

Sarasota Vacation: Day 5

  • Spend the day touring the rest of Sarasota…or hanging at the beach!
  • In the morning, spend time touring The Ringling . You will not be disappointed!
  • Next, travel south and stop for lunch at the Sunnyside Café (Trip Advisor Travelers’ Choice 2020 winner!).
  • Hit up the Sarasota Jungle Gardens for some animal fun.
  • And/or take an afternoon Sarasota City Sightseeing Tour via trolley to learn more about this awesome city.
  • Finally, end the day by heading to St. Armand’s Circle for an awesome dinner at Shore . This modern and trendy restaurant is a perfect way to wind down your vacation.

The Ringling

With its history dating back to 1927, The Ringling honors the legacy of Mable and John Ringling, the “King of the American Circus”.

Even if you’re not into history or art, the Ringling Museum is a spectacular sight to see.

The grounds are set right along Sarasota Bay and are covered with the most beautiful trees and plants that Florida has to offer.

Kids will absolutely love the Circus Museum and  Tibbals Learning Center  where they can view the world’s largest miniature circus model, walk on a high wire, stand on a horse’s back, and squeeze into a clown car.

Our favorite part is exploring the gardens (complete with koi fish, turtles, and blue herons) and taking in the grandeur of the Ca’d’Zan mansion and terrace.

Sarasota Jungle Gardens

Family-owned Sarasota Jungle Gardens is an awesome and affordable experience when visiting Sarasota with kids.

Sarasota Jungle Gardens  is home to more than 200 exotic animals including parrots, macaws, flamingos, primates, snakes, iguanas, alligators, crocodiles, and other reptiles.

There are 1.2 miles of paved jungle trails suitable for both strollers and wheelchairs, most of which are shaded. Seating for the outdoor animal shows is on shaded bleachers as well.

Unlike a typical zoo experience, there are many chances to ‘hold’ the animals at Sarasota Jungle Gardens.

We’ve seen visitors hand-feeding flamingos, holding a parrot, and getting their photo taken with an alligator.

Sarasota Vacation: Day 6

  • Take a day trip to experience more of Florida’s finest!

It’s hard to vacation in Florida and only stay in one spot. After all, the US state of Florida offers so many amazing destinations and attractions to make for a perfect family vacation.

If you have more than a few days to spend in Sarasota, consider taking a day trip to its surrounding cities or beachside communities.

Here are some of our favorite Florida attractions and their driving distance from Sarasota:

  • Walt Disney World’s  Magic Kingdom , Orlando – 1 hr. 48 min. drive
  • Busch Gardens theme park, Tampa Bay – 1 hr. drive
  • Universal Studios theme park , Orlando – 1 hr. 55 min. drive
  • Clearwater Marine Aquarium, Clearwater – 1 hr. 15 min. drive
  • Anna Maria Island – 40 min. drive
  • Fort De Soto Park , St. Petersburg – 56 min. drive

Where to Stay in Sarasota

Our favorite places to stay in Sarasota include  Lido Beach Resort , in Sarasota,  Tropical Breeze Resort , on Siesta Key, and  The Resort at Longboat Key Club (especially if you’re into golf).

If you don’t necessarily want to stay oceanfront, our top recommendations include Embassy Suites by Hilton Sarasota , The Westin Sarasota , and finally, Homewood Suites by Hilton Sarasota .

Sarasota Vacation: Getting There

The closest airport to the city of Sarasota is the Sarasota-Bradenton International Airport. In fact, the airport is only 5 miles from the heart of Downtown Sarasota.

All major rental car companies such as Alamo, Avis, Enterprise, and Hertz are available at the Sarasota-Bradenton airport.

Other nearby airports include St. Petersburg-Clearwater International Airport and Tampa International Airport; both a 1-hour drive from the airport to Sarasota.

Taxis and ride-hail companies such as Uber and Lyft are available from the airports as well.

How to Get Around

Sarasota’s attractions are spread throughout the city and local area, so it is best to have or rent a car for your Sarasota FL vacation.

Be mindful that traffic does get heavy during high tourist seasons, so do plan accordingly and bring along your patience.

Sarasota County’s bus service (SCAT), as well as taxis and ride-hail companies, are another way to get around the city, however.

Tips for Visiting Sarasota

  • During the hot summer months, plan your outdoor activities for the morning or after dinner when temperatures aren’t as hot.
  • If you spend time outdoors during the afternoon, wear loose-fitting, lightweight clothing, put on sunscreen, and bring along plenty of water.
  • If you’re looking to avoid crowds, the best time to go to the beach is either early in the morning or later in the afternoon. Most of the tourists hit the beach between 10 am and 2 pm, and then everybody starts leaving between 3 pm and 5 pm.
  • If visiting during the months of April to October, always have a travel-size umbrella handy for the frequent, unexpected rain showers that pop up.
  • Traffic congestion is an issue in Sarasota. Expect heavy traffic and for it to take twice as long to get places during the winter tourist months.
  • Sarasota is a popular location for Major League Baseball teams to hold their spring training. If you come in the spring, check out the spring training schedules to catch a practice or game!

I regret not going up to Sarasota when we were in Naples all summer. I heard the Ringling is cool and didn’t realize there was an aquarium up there. Kayaking, sunset, beach bars are such standard gulf of mexico activities! I need to get up there. Also thanks for the hotel tips. I guess the chain hotels are more in the city?

Yes…all of the chain hotel brands are in the downtown area, however, there is a Holiday Inn that is located directly on the end of Lido Beach. We haven’t stayed there, but the reviews look good.

11 Top Things to Do in Sarasota, Florida

sarasota florida trip

Just south of Tampa, Sarasota is most famous as being the Winter Quarters of the Ringling Brothers Circus from 1927 to 1959, but there is so much more to see and experience in this Gulf Coast city today. A great getaway any time of year (although hurricane season can bring some unexpected weather), Sarasota offers beautiful white sand beaches, plenty of museums, gardens, restaurants, nightlife, and quite a few activities for the kids.

Read on for some places you’re sure to love in this sunny city.

Put Your Horticulture Hat on at Marine Selby Botanical Gardens

Marie Selby Botanical Gardens

This bayfront botanical garden actually has two locations: a 30-acre campus in Osprey and a 15-acre campus in downtown Sarasota. The latter is the only botanical garden in the world where epiphytic orchids, bromeliads, gesneriads, and ferns—types of air plants that grow on the surface of other plants—are both studied and displayed. You could spend an entire day just strolling through the gardens and checking out the native Florida plants, some of which have a 5,000-year history! Pricing is different for each location, although both are free for children under the age of 4.

Go Back in Time as You Tour the Ca d’Zan Mansion

Want to be transported to the Roaring Twenties? Just visit the former home of one of America’s wealthiest couples at the time. After traveling through Europe for a quarter of a century, John and Mable Ringling sought to settle down in Sarasota and build a home inspired by Venice's Ducal Palace, Ca' d'Oro, and Grunwald Hotel. Designed by New York architect Dwight James Baum, Ca d'Zan translates to “House of John”—fitting for a 36,000-square-foot waterfront mansion reminiscent of Italy’s canalside glitz and glamor.

Today, it’s been restored and remains one of the Suncoast’s most luxurious homes. Open daily from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. (except on Thanksgiving, Christmas Day, and New Year’s Day), Ca d’Zan offers self-guided tours of the first floor for $35; admission includes entry to the Museum of Art, Circus Museum, Bayfront Gardens, and Glass Pavilion. Be sure to purchase tickets in advance.

Take a Walk on the Wild Side at Big Cat Habitat & Gulf Coast Sanctuary

A safe place for native and exotic wildlife in need, this nonprofit has been a Sarasota staple for 35 years. With three indoor and outdoor habitats that feature swimming pools, palm trees, and toys for the animals, Big Cat Habitat was built to stimulate the minds and bodies of all the creatures that call this place home. Visit to learn about the habitat’s conservation efforts and to experience some really fun and educational demonstrations, including a bird show, lemur yoga, and an animal teaching workshop.

General admission is $25 for adults and $10 for children, but tickets for separate events vary and need to be purchased in advance. Bonus: The cost of admission always goes to feeding and caring for the animals.

Spend a Day Lounging and Checking Out the Wildlife at Lido Key Beach

FotoFloridian / Flickr

Just west of Sarasota by car, Lido Key Beach is a super picturesque place to spend a day. This beach is known for its sunset cruises and eco-tourism, but you can also go fishing, set sail, and stay on the lookout for dolphins—you’re sure to spot some if you hang around long enough. Catch the sunset at Lido Key before heading to dinner somewhere like Drift Kitchen & Bar at the Lido Beach Resort. Or, if you're in the mood for freshly caught seafood, hit up Lido Island Grill —there's no better place for it, to be honest.

Witness the Most Spectacular White Sand at Siesta Key Beach

Located on the 8-mile-long barrier island of Siesta Key, this pristine beach is an approximately 16-minute drive from downtown Sarasota. Consistently named the best beach in the U.S. , the sand here is made of 99 percent quartz, giving it the ultra-white color and powdery soft feel the beach is so famous for. In addition to barefoot walks along the shore, Siesta Key Beach is an excellent spot for dolphin watching. There are plenty of amenities available, including concession stands, a picnic area, volleyball courts, and beach wheelchairs.

If you want to explore outside the beach, you’ll find a lot of places to dine, shop, and stay around the island. Here with the whole family? Check out Mote Marine Laboratory & Aquarium , where you'll find sea turtles, manatees, stingrays, and other aquatic life. Tickets can be purchased in advance online, and cost $26 for adults and $19 for children.

Catch a Game at Ed Smith Stadium

Even if you’re not a baseball fan, there’s nothing like spending a few hours dancing in the stands while enjoying a classic hot dog and an ice-cold beer. Home to the Baltimore Orioles spring training camp, Ed Smith Stadium was built in 1989 and has seen teams like the Chicago White Sox and the Cincinnati Reds training here over the decades. Spring training practices are free to watch and open to the public beginning mid-February, with the games kicking off in March. Whether you stay for five innings or nine, it’ll surely be a good time.

Experience a Show at Van Wezel Performing Arts Hall

This Frank Lloyd Wright Foundation performing arts hall is a Sarasota staple, thanks in large part to its visually stunning aesthetic. At the 1,736-seat theater, you can see comedians like Daniel Tosh, musical groups such as Frankie Valli and the Four Seasons, and Broadway shows including "Chicago." To get the full experience, make a reservation at the on-site Mattison's for a pre-show dinner and cocktail.

If you are local, consider booking a season package (Broadway, dance series, and subscriber specials are available). Note that the Van Wezel is family-friendly for those who want to bring the kids along; it is also wheelchair accessible .

Get Dressed Up for a Night Out at the Sarasota Opera House

A historic theater erected in the 1920s, Sarasota Opera House was the brainchild of Sarasota’s first mayor, A.B. Edwards. The recently renovated 1,100-seat theater has been home to the Sarasota Orchestra since 1949, making it the oldest continuing orchestra in the state of Florida. You’ll find everything from holiday concerts to wind quintets, violin concertos, and even pop performances featuring hits from the likes of Billy Joel and Elton John.

Given its name, the theater is also well-known for its operas, with productions like Giacomo Puccini's "Madama Butterfly" and Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart's "Don Giovanni" having been performed here.

See a Circus Under the Big Top at Circus Arts Conservatory

There are many things you should do while visiting Sarasota, but if you only do one thing from this list, let it be a trip to the Circus Arts Conservatory. Home to Ringling, Sarasota is considered the “circus capital of the world," so why wouldn’t you run to see a live show by incredibly talented, acrobatic performers? The two-hour show is uninterrupted and runs from February through March every year.

Located near Siesta Key Beach, the Ringling Museum, and other fun attractions, the Conservatory offers circus arts classes for both children and adults, plus a summer camp that concludes with a costumed recital.

Visit the Sarasota Classic Car Museum

What’s cool about the Sarasota Classic Car Museum is that it’s the second-oldest continuously operating antique car museum in the country. The 60,000-square-foot museum is home to 100-plus vintage, exotic, and European vehicles, including some celebrity cars—like a Rolls Royce collection that once belonged to John and Mable Ringling. The museum is open from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. Monday through Sunday, except on Christmas. Admission is $18 for adults and $11 for children between 6 and 12; kids 5 and under can visit for free.

Hang Out With the Flamingoes at Sarasota Jungle Gardens

Jim Mullhaupt / Flickr

Florida loves its outdoor adventures and Sarasota Jungle Gardens is no exception. Since 1939, this 10-acre botanical garden has attracted visitors with its jungle bird and reptile shows, free-roaming flamingoes, petting zoo, and alligator feeding pool. Exciting and educational, animal shows here typically run for 20 minutes and almost always include audience participation. Tickets range from $15 for children to $22 for adults, with shows included in the cost of admission. Sarasota Jungle Gardens is open year-round from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. daily, except on Thanksgiving and Christmas.

Sarasota is best known for its wildlife and outdoor attractions—particularly Siesta Key Beach, which is frequently ranked the best beach in the U.S. The city also has a fantastic arts and culture scene, which includes multiple theaters and the Sarasota Orchestra, Florida's oldest continuing orchestra.

Yes! From bar hopping and live music to comedy shows and sunset cruises, there are plenty of things to do in Sarasota at night. Bars typically close around 2 a.m.

You can visit anytime, but March to May and September to November are milder climate-wise. There are also fewer tourists during those months. Remember that hurricane season runs from June to November, so if you do book a trip during that time, make sure to get cancellation insurance.

Super Fun One Day Sarasota, Florida Itinerary

  • Post author: Rachel Pedranti

An hour south of Tampa on the gulf coast of Florida is a small city called Sarasota. Sarasota, Florida is best known as being home to the #1 beach in the United States: Siesta Key Beach. There is so much more than just beaches though! Here is a one day Sarasota itinerary with kids that doesn’t involve the beach unless you want it to.

There is so much to do in Sarasota that no matter your interests your day will be full of culture, arts, outdoor activities, the beach and good food. If you are in town longer make sure to check off as many things to do in Sarasota as possible.

So let’s get started!

This post may contain some affiliate links. This means I make a small profit from your purchase but at no increased cost to you. I only recommend products that I love and would purchase myself! Full disclaimer here .

One Day Sarasota, Itinerary

Delicious, over the top donuts from Five-O Donuts in Sarasota.

First up, the most important meal of the day, breakfast! Start your day off right with some delicious and absolutely decadent donuts from Five-0 Donut Co . They are delicious and completely over the top, in fact it will probably cause a sugar crash about mid morning but it is very worth it. I tried the peanut butter snickers and the s’mores flavors. Both were good but the peanut butter snickers one was my favorite!

Then we headed over to the John and Mable Ringling Museum or “The Ringling” for short. The museum opens at ten so there is no need to get up early. And the donut shop is only a quick 10 minutes away.

The Ringling is made up of several different sections. It started as the winter home for John Ringling, one of the Ringling Brothers that started the Ringling circus, and his wife Mable. The art museum was started by John and Mable Ringling to celebrate art and culture. Their mansion is now part of the museum and the stunning home’s design was drawn from a Palace in Venice (it costs an added fee to go inside). They loved Italy and you can see that in all of the buildings and landscaping.

There are also two whole museum buildings dedicated to the history of the circus. They have miniatures depicting what life in the circus would have been like and what a show would have looked like. In addition, there are circus artifacts and an interactive area where kids and adults alike can walk a tightrope and more.

All in all I recommend about 3-4 hours to see everything!

No Sarasota itinerary is complete without visiting The Ringling Museum. This art and history museum has a large display of art as well as buildings that tell the history of the circus and the mansion of John Ringling.

By now you’re probably starving! There are lots of great restaurants to try, we chose O’Leary’s Tiki Bar and Grill . It is a waterfront restaurant in Bayfront Park right next to the “Unconditional Surrender” statue. The outdoor seating offers a great view of the water, the food was delicious, my virgin mango daiquiri was refreshing and there was even live music playing. I definitely would have appreciated it more if I didn’t have a baby that was trying to nap lol. Overall it is a great spot to stop in and eat for lunch.

Bayfront Park also has waterfront walking paths, a playground, boat rentals and more.

After lunch you’ll be rested and ready for your next adventure. Since it is the hottest part of the day an indoor activity like the Mote Laboratory and Aquarium is perfect!

At the Mote Aquarium you can see lots of fun aquatic wildlife like jellyfish, sharks, turtles and even manatees! I recommend about 2-3 hours in total for the aquarium.

If you are really hungry you can walk less than ten minutes and eat at The Old Salty Dog , a seafood and hot dog restaurant on the water. Or if you’re still full from lunch then head to St. Armands Circle . This is a roundabout with high end stores and a variety of food options. You can walk around, shop and work up an appetite. Once you are hungry you can choose from one of the great food choices like:

  • The Columbia Restaurant
  • Crab and Fin

If you have young kids like us then it is probably time to head in for the night but if you still have more life in you then head to nearby Lido Beach to watch the sunset!

Another fun item for your Sarasota itinerary is the Mote Laboratory and Aquarium. If you are looking for things to do in Sarasota with kids this is the perfect activity. There are lots of animals, fun facts, touch pools and even a small play area. Kids will love spending hours here.

Best Time To Visit Sarasota

Thanks to Florida’s temperate climate there really is no bad time to visit. I will say the best temperatures, before it gets too hot, are between November and May with January and February being on the chilly side.

Hurrican and rainy season is from April to October. That doesn’t mean it is a bad time to visit but you should definitely bring an umbrella and shoes that you don’t mind getting wet.

The hottest time of year is from June to October and that also tends to be peak tourist season because kids are out of school and family vacations are happening.

My personal favorite time in Florida is March – May!!

How to get to sarasota, fl.

Sarasota is very easy to get to. You can drive there which is what I recommend if you are coming from a drivable distance. You are most likely going to need your car to get around so driving saves you the cost of renting a car.

Luckily Sarasota is not far from several large Florida Cities.

  • Tampa to Sarasota: 1 Hour
  • Orlando to Sarasota: 2 ½ Hours
  • Naples to Sarasota: 2 Hours
  • Miami to Sarasota: 3 ½ Hours

You can also fly into the Sarasota Bradenton International Airport (SRQ). It is a small local airport but if you can find cheap flights then flying is a great option. The airport is just outside the city and you can rent cars there if you need to.

Tampa is only an hour drive away and has a bigger airport (TPA). So another option is to fly into Tampa and then drive down to Sarasota. You may be able to find cheaper flights out of TPA since it is the larger airport.

How Many Days Do You Need in Sarasota?

The ideal amount of time you need for a vacation in Sarasota, Florida is 3-5 days. That is ample amount of time to see the sights as well as have plenty of time for relaxing and playing on the beach.

Sarasota offers so much to do that you could even stretch 5 days into a week or more, especially if you added in some day trips to nearby Tampa, Orlando or Naples.

One day is enough to get a sampling but I promise it will leave you wanting more! Check out the longer Sarasota itineraries I have (coming soon).

No Sarasota itinerary is complete without visiting The Ringling Museum. This art and history museum has a large display of art as well as buildings that tell the history of the circus and the mansion of John Ringling.

How to Get Around Town

Like I touched on before, driving is the best way to get around Sarasota on vacation. As is the case with the rest of the United States, things are just too spread out and the public transportation is just not widespread enough to be truly useful.

There is a bus system (SCAT) that you can try but if you can afford it, I highly recommend having access to a car.

Where to Stay When Vacationing in Sarasota?

If you decide to visit Sarasota for longer than a day, which I definitely recommend (or take multiple day trips) then these are some great places to stay:

Affordable:

With rooms starting at under $80 per night the Kompose Boutique Hotel is a great option. It is centrally located, has a cute pool and parking is included. The cute decor will make you feel like you’re at a nice resort but the close proximity of sarasota attractions will mean you will hardly be there to enjoy them!

Homewood Suites by Hilton has phenomenal reviews from guests. It is clean and the staff are great at giving personal attention to individual guests and their needs. Breakfast is included and these are apartment style rooms so you can cook meals at home if you are looking to save even more money!

The Ritz-Carlton in Sarasota has AMAZING reviews. It is an ocean front property with a private beach and many rooms get views of the bay! The hotel provides cribs or infant beds on request, the rooms are spacious and some reservations include breakfast. It is a great place to visit with or without kids.

What is Sarasota Known For?

If I had to pick one thing that Sarasota, Florida is best known for it would be that it is home to the number one beach in the U.S. Siesta Key has ranked as #1 in the U.S. three times since 2015 and last year it ranked #11 in the world!

Siesta Key boasts 100% quartz-crystal sand that doesn’t get hot, playgrounds, pavilions and free parking! ( visitsarasota ). This Sarasota itinerary doesn’t include the beach but the next one definitely!

Tips For Vacationing in Sarasota

  • Florida gets HOT, especially in the middle of the day. The best time to go to the beach is in the morning or in the evening when the temperatures are cooler and the sun’s rays are not as intense.
  • Make sure you wear sunscreen! Even if you don’t plan on being outside all day it is a good idea to wear sunscreen. The Florida sun is strong and nobody wants to deal with a sunburn on vacation.
  • If you are visiting during the rainy season (April – October) make sure you pack an umbrella. It rains almost everyday in the late afternoon/ early evening during this time. Sometimes more!
  • Schedule any indoor activities during the hottest times of the day or the rainiest time of day in order to stay the most comfortable

A great waterfront restaurant in Sarasota is O'Leary's Tiki Bar and Grill in Bayfront Park. It has good views, good food and even live music.

15 Best Day Trips from Sarasota

Located on Florida’s coast on the Gulf of Mexico, Sarasota is a popular seaside resort for both domestic and international tourists.

The town has a much quieter and more laid back feel than other Florida beach towns and is therefore often preferred by families and tourists looking for something a little bit more peaceful.

Like other towns on the Gulf Coast, Sarasota has a great arts community.

There are great views from the keys off the coast of town, and a great multicultural vibe thanks to influences from elsewhere in Florida.

It is a great hub for day trips, and most of the peninsula is easily accessible within a day.

The state has a great variety to offer; from secluded beach towns to multicultural cities and, of course, the major theme parks that are famous across the world.

Here are the 15 best day trips you can take from Sarasota.

1. Ybor City

Ybor City, Tampa

A district of northern Tampa, Ybor City is packed with attractions for day trippers.

It has deep connections to the Cuban American community and was once known as the US capital of cigars, as well as the place where the Cubano sandwich was introduced to the states.

It is accessible by streetcar from central Tampa, which is in itself an interesting attraction.

There is a museum dedicated to the district, as well as a cigar museum and art walk, where you can check out local arts and crafts.

The district remains very multicultural to this day and is a vibrant trip for any tourist to the region.

2. Clearwater Beach

Clearwater Beach

Florida is famed nationwide for its beaches, and Clearwater Beach is one of the most famous in the state.

From here, you can take a boat trip out into the Gulf of Mexico to search for native bottlenose dolphins.

The town is also popular with national celebrities and there are many tours that will help you spot famous houses.

The beach itself is well known for white sands and clear waters; it has been voted one of the top ten beaches in the world for more than 20 years in a row.

You can stick around for sunset to see one of the most famous views in the US from Pier 60.

3. Saint Petersburg

St Petersburg, Florida

Saint Petersburg is a quieter city just south of Tampa.

The recently reopened pier has your typical seaside attractions and great views over the Gulf of Mexico.

The town is a creative hub and has a monthly art walk, where you can discover local arts and crafts.

There is also the Salvador Dali museum, which contains the largest collection of Dali works in the country.

You can also catch a typical American baseball game with the Tampa Bay Rays who play in the city.

If you are interested in the multicultural heart of the city, the city center itself is packed with a variety of shops, galleries, and restaurants from all across the world.

4. Walt Disney World

Walt Disney World

The most famous attraction in the state is within reasonable traveling distance from Sarasota.

If you are going for a day trip, we recommend you choose one park – Magic Kingdom for traditional Disney fun, EPCOT if you are interested in science and culture, Animal Kingdom for a combination between rides and a safari, or Hollywood Studios to experience movie-themed attractions.

If you give yourself enough time, both EPCOT and Hollywood Studios can be covered in a single day as they are connected by a short ferry ride.

The parks themselves are full of restaurants, shops and shows alongside the rides, so you can easily spend the entire day in the park.

5. Clermont

Citrus Tower, Clermont, Florida

Though not as popular now, Clermont was once one of the most popular towns for tourists in Florida.

Before the construction of Walt Disney World, the Citrus Tower was the most popular attraction in the central Florida region.

If you take a ride to the top, you can get great views over Orlando, Walt Disney World, and the many lakes in the area.

If you are interested in wine, you can also visit the Lakeridge Winery and Vineyards whilst you are in town.

Here, you can experience a wine tasting and get a tour of the vineyard.

6. Daytona Beach

Daytona Beach

Daytona Beach is the most well-known beach on Florida’s Atlantic coast.

The 23-mile beach is lined with white sand and remains very popular with both domestic and international tourists.

It is also regarded as the capital of racing, with NASCAR based here if you are interested in catching a race.

The town has seen a lot of development over the past few years and is now packed with attractions such as museums, a boardwalk, and golf courses.

You can even go horseback riding along the beach.

This is a fantastic option if you are visiting Florida as a family.

Miami

The largest city in Florida – and one of the most well-known across the country – is packed with attractions and could easily fill up an entire day.

The Miami Beach Boardwalk stretches along the entirety of Miami beach and is possibly the most well-known spot in the city.

The beach itself is situated next to a coral reef, so is a great spot for snorkeling.

If you are looking for shopping opportunities, Aventura Mall has a wide variety of American chains and smaller local shops.

You can also find cool boutiques across the city and a wide array of restaurants influenced heavily by Cuban culture.

8. Biscayne National Park

Biscayne National Park

Natural history lovers will get a lot out of a visit to Biscayne National Park.

It features four different ecosystems in one large national park.

Your first stop should be the Dante Fascell Visitor Centre, where you can learn more about the park, the animals that live in the area, and the artists who were inspired by the natural beauty of the area.

The most famous island is Boca Chita Key, which is full of tourist-friendly amenities and great hiking trails.

You can also take the maritime heritage trail to learn more about the shipwrecks along the coast of the park.

9. Boca Raton

Boca Raton

Boca Raton is a popular town in the south-east of the state.

There are some great concert venues in the town – including two amphitheaters – so it is worth checking out local guides before planning your trip.

If you have kids with you, there are two free child-centric museums in the city to keep them entertained.

You can also visit some of the nature centers to learn more about native Floridian wildlife.

The town contains three acclaimed independent cinemas.

The art museum is free for kids and free to adults on the first Sunday of every month.

10. Cabbage Key

Cabbage Key

A short trip south to Fort Myers will allow you to take the ferry to Cabbage Key.

This is far less touristy than other beach areas in the state, so is a wonderful option if you want to experience something a little more secluded.

The island is entirely privately owned, however, day trips are allowed.

You can visit the Cabbage Key to sample some Floridian cuisine – including seafood and key lime pie.

The inn is also decorated in dollar bills signed by previous visitors – including a bill signed by John F. Kennedy.

All of the buildings on the island are in the Old Florida style, so this is a great place to check out that kind of architecture.

11. Cape Canaveral

Cape Canaveral

Cape Canaveral is well known for the Kennedy Space Center.

Here, you can see the history of space exploration in the United States, and learn more about the modern work of NASA. Entry tickets include bus rides around former launch sites, entrance to the museums in the site and movies about space exploration.

The center does close on launch dates, but this gives you the opportunity to find a good spot nearby to watch a rocket take off.

The town itself also has some interesting museums and casino cruises.

The beach is a popular spot for fishermen, so bring your rod with you if you are interested in catching some dinner.

12. Everglades National Park

Everglades National Park

This unique ecosystem can be found at the southern end of Florida.

The main gateway to the national park is Everglades City.

Here you can check out the Gulf Coast Visitor Center and gain access to the system of over 10,000 islands.

The area is mostly only accessible by boat.

Kayakers will enjoy the 99-mile-long trail through the island system.

The southern tip of the park in Flamingo is also a great entry point for boat rides and spotting some American alligators.

For peace of mind, you can take a ranger-led tour, but, despite the alligators, it is quite safe if you are visiting by boat.

13. Universal Studios

Universal Studios

The second most popular of Florida’s theme park complexes, Universal Studios is entirely themed around American movies and there are plenty of rides based on some of the most well-known films released from the studio.

The two parks are Universal Studios and Islands of Adventure.

You can also check out Universal CityWalk, which does not require an entry fee and has some great shopping and dining opportunities.

Islands of Adventure is more geared towards children than the main park, so is the best option if you are visiting as a family.

You can also try out mini golf or watch The Blue Man Group in CityWalk.

14. Orlando

Downtown Orlando

Most visitors to central Florida are there for the theme parks, but the city of Orlando itself has some interesting spots for tourists.

The city has a very strong multicultural feel, particularly from the Vietnamese, Brazilian and Indian communities.

International Drive is the main entertainment strip in the city, with various restaurants, shows, and combinations of the two.

The area is also popular with shoppers, with budget shoppers heading to Premium Outlets for cheap designer goods, and more upmarket shopping available at the Mall at Millenia.

The city is also full of botanical gardens and arboretums.

15. Busch Gardens

Busch Gardens

Rarely the main theme park on people’s minds when they visit Florida, Busch Gardens is still well worth a visit and is the closest park to Sarasota – being located within the Tampa Bay area.

It is an African-themed park that combines rides with zoo attractions and is great for animal lovers and families who wish to remain in the Gulf Coast area.

There are various shows throughout the theme park, from birds to ice dancing, and a good variety of restaurants across the complex.

It also contains Montu, which, at the time of its construction, was the tallest roller coaster in the world, though this record has now been overtaken by their sister park in Virginia.

“The summer travel season is off to a hot start and we expect to set new travel records on the road and in the sky during the week of Independence Day,” said Debbie Haas, Vice President of Travel for AAA – The Auto Club Group, in a statement. “There will be 3.5 million more travelers than last year.  That means even more people at airports and popular attractions like beaches, lakes, and theme parks.”

What day is July 4th, 2024? Is it a federal holiday?

Which mode of travel is more popular for Fourth of July travelers?

AAA projects a record-breaking 60.6 million people will travel by car over Independence Day week, seeing 2.8 million travelers more compared to last year. According to AAA partner and rental car company Hertz, cities like Dallas, Los Angeles, Denver, and San Francisco are showing the highest rental car demand.

Meanwhile in Florida, road travel will set a record for the second year in a row with more than 3.9 million Floridians expected to take a road trip. AAA shared that's 183,000 more than last year.

“Road travelers should prepare for congestion in the afternoon and evening hours, particularly near larger metro areas, theme parks and popular attractions,” Mark Jenkins, spokesman for AAA, said. “With so many people on the road it’s important to be patient, minimize distractions while driving, and move over for people on the roadside.

What will gas prices look like around July 4th for Florida drivers?

AAA reported gas prices recently sank to multi-month lows, but rebounded in the past couple of days.

On Wednesday, June 19, Florida drivers paid an average price of $3.32 per gallon on gasoline. That's more than what holiday travelers paid last Independence Day, when the state average was $3.26 per gallon.

The auto club said it expected prices to remain volatile through the rest of summer travel season.

Is July 4th week busy for airports? AAA says yes

An estimated 5.74 million people will fly to their Independence Day destination, a 7% increase from 2023 and a 12% increase from 2019. With the possibility of congested airports, AAA recommended arriving two hours early for flights and bringing carry-on luggage instead of checked-in bags.

Airfare is 2% cheaper this Independence Day week compared to last year, with the average price for a domestic roundtrip ticket is $800.

As for other modes of transportation, AAA predicts nearly five million people are expected to travel by buses, cruises, and train.

When are the best and worst times to travel on Fourth of July Holiday?

For those planning a road trip for Independence Day weekend, transportation data and insights provider  INRIX  offers the best times to get on the road.

They recommended drivers hit the road in the morning, adding that travelers returning on Monday, July 8th should avoid rush hour traffic in the morning and afternoon.

“Drivers in large metro areas can expect the worst traffic delays on Wednesday, July 3rd, as they leave town, and Sunday, July 7th, as they return,” Bob Pishue, transportation analyst at INRIX, said. “Road trips over the holiday week could take up to 67% longer than normal. Travelers should monitor 511 services, local news stations, and traffic apps for up-to-the-minute road conditions.”

These Are the 4 Best Places to Live in Florida

F lorida isn't just one of the most meme-able states in America. It's also one of the most livable places. And after the pandemic made working from home a possibility for more people, they began moving to Florida in droves.

Who wouldn't want to live with nonexistent winters, great food and gorgeous beaches? Of course, this has meant that popular spots like Miami and Tampa have seen some dramatic jumps in housing prices.

But don't worry. There are still some places where you can live your dreams of tropical days eating Cuban sandwiches without going broke. These are the four best places to live in Florida, and they rank among the places to live in the U.S.

How the Ranking Was Determined

We have based the livability ranking on the U.S. News and World Report's Best Places to Live in the U.S. in 2023-2024 . The annual ranking takes into account numerous factors to come up with a list of 150 cities. According to the report, "a place had to have good value, be a desirable place to live, have a strong job market and a high quality of life" to make the cut.

After analyzing the report, we've taken the four Florida cities that made it into the top 30 of U.S. cities overall. We considered the report's ranking and scores for the cities and also added our own editorial input, based on the experience of our staff writer (me), who lives in the state.

Take it from a local and consider moving to these awesome places in Florida.

1. Sarasota

Population: 824,160 (metro population)

U.S. News ranking: 5 (out of 30)

Value: 6.1*

Quality of life: 7.0

Overall score: 6.8

*Value, quality of life, and overall score are from the U.S. News and World's Report rankings , based on their analysis of public data and user opinions.

Bottom Line: Sarasota

Sarasota comes in at number five in the overall list of livable cities. We aren't surprised to see it do so well, especially because we lived there for almost half a decade and are well-acquainted with its charms.

The city is known to the outside world as a sleepy town where retired northerners come to spend the winter. And the stereotype is definitely true. Snowbirds flock here when the weather gets cold. What doesn't get advertised as much, however, is that Sarasota is also a college town, with New College of Florida, the Ringling College of Art and Design, and another four secondary education institutions.

Both snowbirds and college students love cultural events, so Sarasota has a constant roster of plays, concerts, art shows, plays and performances happening. You will also be able to visit institutions like the Ringling Museum, which has an impressive art collection that spans from ancient times to the current century and includes works by Peter Paul Reubens and Marcel Duchamp.

In terms of food, you can expect both variety and quality. From Peruvian to Thai to American to Spanish, you'll find it all Downtown, on Main Street or Saint Armand's, along with boutique shops and bars.

Of course, the real reason to move to Sarasota is the beach. Siesta Key constantly ranks amongst the most beautiful in the country. The flour-like sand is so soft that you'll have the urge to eat it and the water in the Gulf of Mexico is clear and warm. At sunset, groups of dolphins often come close to the shore and bioluminescence happens seasonally.

As someone who lived there for a long time, Sarasota deserves to be in the top 10 best cities in the U.S.

Population: 372,797 (metro population)

U.S. News ranking: 6 (out of 30)

Quality of life: 7.1

Overall score: 6.6

Bottom Line: Naples

About two hours south of Sarasota, you'll find Naples, which ranks at number 6 on the overall list.

Another town in the Gulf of Mexico, Naples is pricey —  unless you're bringing in a considerable amount of money home, you won't be able to buy a home right on the beach. But condos are attainable, and it is entirely possible to find a decent-ish value on homes that are a 10-15 minute drive to the beach. And we definitely prefer that to living in a shoebox in New York City.

We'll let you in on a Florida secret: Naples is where people from Miami go on vacation. The city doesn't have as much to do as Sarasota, but it is a perfect midway point between Tampa and Miami, which is what draws so many business people to it — either permanently or as a place to spend long workcations. It is also smaller and quieter, which is why people from the big cities come here for vacation.

If you make the move to Naples, you can expect summers to be extremely busy with tourists and winters to be filled with snowbirds. But the latter stay for enough months to actually contribute to the community. In the offseasons, however, you can enjoy a taste of Florida like it used to be before everyone realized it's an awesome place to live.

3. Melbourne

Population: 601,573 (metro population)

U.S. News ranking: 15 (out of 30)

Quality of life: 6.8

Bottom Line: Melbourne

Many people have never heard of Melbourne, which is surprising given its proximity to one of Florida's darlings, Orlando.

One of the major appeals of Melbourne is that it's only an hour away from Mickey's backyard. And if you move to Florida, that means that you get the discounted resident prices for many of the theme parks like Islands of Adventure (where you'll find Harry Potter World) and Disneyland.

But Melbourne — which ranks No. 15 overall — has charms of its own outside of its connection to theme parks. The biggest one is, again, the beach. Located on Florida's Space Coast and Cape Canaveral, you will be able to see space shuttle launches or take your kids to the educational Kennedy Space Station.

Better yet, the city has managed to keep its market from skyrocketing. That doesn't mean it's necessarily cheap, but it's reasonable for real estate next to the beach. There is also proximity to nature, including several state parks and lakes. This combines to earn Melbourne a solid 7 in quality of life.

4. Jacksonville

Population: 1,581,680

U.S. News ranking: 16 (out of 30)

Bottom Line: Jacksonville

Coming in at No.16, Jacksonville is far from the messy stereotype movies would have you believe. OK, yes, there are a lot of drunk people who come to party at the beach, which sometimes makes this city seem like it's trying to imitate its cooler older cousin, Miami.

But those are things residents don't usually deal with since they don't go to the tourist beaches anyways. And what movies don't typically show are the numerous trails and kayaking routes that residents enjoy quite frequently. Plus, it's right on the border with Georgia, so if you ever feel like leaving on a road trip, you won't have to drive eight hours before crossing a state line.

The main downside to Jacksonville is that winters do get colder than in the rest of the state. Though we're saying that from a South Florida perspective — if you enjoy cooler temperatures, then this is a definite plus.

Another downside is that the business and job markets aren't as developed as in other places in Florida. But that is rapidly changing as more companies look to relocate to the Sunshine State for its tax laws.

Right now, the real estate market is still reasonable and affordable. But if Jacksonville follows the path of other Florida cities, it won't stay that way for long. And that's just another reason to consider moving here sooner rather than later.
