Beekse Bergen | Safari in the Netherlands

Safari in the Netherlands, is that even possible? Well, the answer is yes! In the South of the Netherlands, in Tilburg, Safari Park Beekse Bergen opened its doors back in 1968 and for over 50 years it attracts visitors who are after a safari experience close to home.

In 2018 it opened the Safari Resort, adding a new and unique dimension to the Safari Park. It makes it possible to stay overnight, right in the heart of the savannah. You are surrounded by wild animals and amazing nature.

Traveltomtom was invited to experience this Safari Resort and experience these safari vibes in the Netherlands. Traveltomtom team member and travel writer Ashley traveled to Tilburg with four nieces and nephews to fully experience the Beekse Bergen.

About Safari Resort Beekse Bergen

Looking for a unique safari experience, but Africa is still a step too far? Safari Resort Beekse Bergen in the Netherlands got you covered. You will spend the night in the heart of the savannah, literally surrounded by wild animals. You fall asleep and wake up among the animals and with the most beautiful views over the savannah.

The resort is very easily accessible as it is located close to the A58 highway and right next to the N269 provincial road. The resort is signposted very well as soon as you get off the highway, so you can’t miss it!

Checking in was really easy as all lodges have a combination lock at the front door. You get the code to this lock one day before your arrival, so you can go straight to your lodge without having to stop at the guest service. No keys or cards to open your lodge, so no keys or cards can be lost! Really clever.

On arrival the gates to the park open automatically based on license plate. However, Beekse Bergen is a car-free park, which means you can park your car near your lodge for loading and unloading, but you’re asked to park your car at one of the bigger car parks located throughout the park.

Beekse Bergen is a large resort with 239 lodges that differ in type, size, facilities and theme. The lodges are located around the Masai Mara and Serengeti savannahs, Simbara West and Simbara East, where the lions can be found and Bahari Beach, home of the seals.

No matter which lodge or accommodation you have, you are always surrounded by wildlife with loads of animals on your doorstep.

Savannah Lodge 410

We were given Savannah Lodge 410, located at the Masai Mara Savannah. We arrived quite late at night, so we had to wait to the next morning to see what our views would be like and what animals we would see.

Checking in to our lodge was like checking in to a five star hotel room, but then lodge style. We had a huge lodge with absolutely everything we needed. It has three bedrooms for a total of 6 people. One of the bedrooms has an ensuite bathroom with (rain) shower and sink.

Then there’s also a large bathroom with double sink, toilet, bathtub, (rain) shower and sauna. Yes, the lodge just has a sauna, how cool is that!

There is also a separate second toilet. Then there is the living room and kitchen area, with a television and large and comfy sofa and chairs and a large dining table with 6 chairs.

The kitchen has all equipment needed, fridge, oven, microwave and dishwasher.

And by far the best thing, windows over the full width of the living room and kitchen, with savannah views!

Nothing can beat a breakfast with your family overlooking the savannah and seeing zebras, giraffes and rhinos walking around.

Karibu Town

Karibu Town is the lively and vibrant heart of the Safari Resort. Here you will find here everything you need for a perfect stay. It’s never boring in Karibu Town! Let me list all the available facilities.

Ranger Basecamp

Ranger Basecamp is located within Karibu Town. Throughout the day they offer a range of activities and entertainment. Our niece really enjoyed the mini disco and puppet theatre. They will keep the kids busy all day! The kids can even earn a real Ranger Badge at the end of their stay. You can find the full entertainment program on the Beekse Bergen App.

Restaurant Moto

An open kitchen and a fire place in the middle of the restaurant, no surprise because Moto means ‘fire’ in Swahili. Restaurant Moto is a very atmospheric restaurant with a large terrace also overlooking the Serengeti Savannah. It’s the perfect place for a nice and delicious dinner after a day full of activities and adventures. They’re open from 12.00 – 8.00 pm for lunch and dinner.

On Friday, Saturday and Sunday they also do pizza delivery to your lodge. You can just give them a ring, place your order and request your delivery time. Your pizza’s will be delivered right to your doorstep, hot and ready to eat! You can also order pizza or make a reservation for Restaurant Moto through the Beekse Bergen App.

Maji Springs

Kids and adults, everyone will have a great time at Maji Springs. A heated indoor swimming pool, an adventurous water playground with various play elements, fun for the whole family.

Unfortunately Maji Springs was closed during our stay at the Safari Resort, so we haven’t been able to experience this pool. The pool was closed because they are constructing a new toddler pool and family slide. During the renovation you can use the Etsi Pool swimming pool located at the Lake Resort.

Guest Service & Market

Just in case you have any questions or have forgotten something, feel free to make a stop at the Guest Service & Market, also located in Karibu Town. The Guest Service Centre is open all day to answer all of your questions. The market is your place for souvenirs, groceries and fresh sandwiches.

Pamoja Lounge & Bowling

Pamoja Lounge and the bowling alley are located between Restaurant Moto and the Guest Service & Market. Be sure to make a reservation if you want to have some bowling fun. Without a reservation you risk missing out on all the fun.

Breakfast Delivery

The lodges at the resort all have a fully equipped kitchen, so you can take everything for dinner and breakfast with you and cook it there. But, if you want you can go all luxury with the breakfast delivery service. Before you even wake up, your breakfast has been delivered to your lodge, just take it inside from your terrace.

Just take it in, put it on the table and enjoy your breakfast, pure luxury for sure. We used the breakfast service and it was simply outstanding! We had the breakfast family box and it came with so much! Croissants, currant buns, oven baked white and brown buns, butter, fresh fruits, jam, chocolate paste, cheese, 3 different cold cuts, gingerbread, apple juice, fresh orange juice, so much and so delicious!

Outdoor Terrace

Just outside of Karibu Town there is a lovely outdoor terrace with Serengeti views. I can imagine this is the place to be in Summer, with a cold drink and views for hours. There is a fireplace and swing benches, where they roast marshmallows in the winter. In winter you can also find a skating rink there where you can ice skate for free. Just request your size skates and have a good time on the ice, while enjoying the views of giraffes and rhinos.

Add-on packages

The breakfast delivery is one of the many add on packages you can order and use while staying at the Safari Resort, but there is more. What about a bicycle package, a cart package, or maybe you have something to celebrate and want a safari cake or sparkling wine to be delivered. It’s all possible, just check the website or the app.

Beekse Bergen App

I have already mentioned it before in this blog a few times, but the Beekse Bergen has their own app and it is very useful! I mainly used it for entertainment times, to see when the mini disco was about to start. But also to check the lion’s feeding times to make sure we wouldn’t miss out as you can see this only 3 times per week.

The app has all maps of the Safari Park, Safari Resort and also the Lake Resort and Speelland, so there is really no reason to get lost. It has all timings listed per park, feeding times, entertainment times but opening times of pools and restaurants as well. It offers important and helpful information for you throughout your stay, manuals for equipment in your lodge, information on the resort and accommodation and where to go for medical help.

Attractions Pass

When you stay in a lodge or safari tent at the Safari Resort or the Lake Resort you receive a complimentary Attractions Pass. The Attractions Pass gives you plenty of benefits during your stay.

What about 25% discount at Safari Park Beekse Bergen, Speelland, Dierenrijk, Zooparc Overloon, Aviodrome Aviation Theme Park, AquaZoo Leeuwarden and Klimrijk Brabant for a whole year after your stay!?

With the attractions pass you get free and unlimited access to the Safari Park and all the parks mentioned above during your entire stay. We could have visited the park if we wanted to, but there was so much to do in the resort that we didn’t visit the park. We will definitely use the attractions pass on some of the other parks this year!

We also visited the park back in 2020 and had equally amazing experiences at the Beekse Bergen.

This time it was just magical to experience the wildlife from our doorstep. When you can see the wild animals from your living room, it’s the best thing there is!

Lake Resort

Next to the Safari Resort there is also the Lake Resort where you can enjoy the ultimate outdoor life, literally located next to Lake Victoria.

New Safari Hotel at Beekse Bergen

They are actually currently building the Safari Hotel at the Beekse Bergen, we could see a glimpse of what is coming and that looked very promising! The hotel will open its doors in March 2023.

Safari Park Beekse Bergen review

It all started with Safari Park Beekse Bergen where you can take a safari through nature and come face-to-face with wild animals on an educational and unique trip through the world of Beekse Bergen. They are open all year round, including public holidays. What makes the Beekse Bergen different from other zoo’s in the Netherlands? Well, it isn’t the standard zoo, it’s all about safari experiences here.

You can go on a boat safari, car safari, bus safari and a walking safari. You can also do game drives here. The experience with the animals on the car safari or game drive is really next level.

We did the car safari and the game drive with the kids back in 2020 and were both times surrounded by giraffes, when that happened, the kids were screaming of enthusiasm and had the time of their life.

We had visited the Safari Park before in 2020 and noticed those amazing lodges when we did the car safari. Little did we know that there was such a cool and amazing park there. Three years later we got an invite to come and experience it on behalf of Traveltomtom.

The resort really offers something special. Visiting the Beekse Bergen is cool, but once the park closes you have to leave and go home. If you are staying at the resort you are surrounded by wild animals all day. No matter where you walk at the resort, you always see the animals.

The lodges are large and equipped with all comforts and luxury. Spoil yourself with a week or weekend among the wild animals at the Safari Resort. If it were up to us and our nephews and nieces we would have never checked out from the Safari Resort!

Fun in the water and relaxation If you feel like a refreshing dip after an adventurous day in the safari park, the Maji Springs swimming pool is located in Karibu Town in the Safari Resort’s Serengeti savannah. Take a dip in the swimming pool or swim a few lengths in the large pool. Check out the toddlers’ and children’s pool where even the youngest can enjoy themselves. Take an adventurous dive down the water slide or relax completely and enjoy the views of the savannah full of wild animals.

Dining on the Serengeti savannah Enjoy a delicious meal at the end of the day in the Moto restaurant. The name ‘Moto’ means fire in the Afrikaans language and that is exactly what this charming restaurant is all about. While you enjoy a glass of wine, watch how the chef prepares the tastiest dishes on the grill. The terrace offers amazing views of the savannah, so even during dinner you can enjoy the presence of wild animals.

Storytime before bedtime Round off the day with a story read out loud at the Ranger Basecamp, the home of the rangers. Or gather around the camp fire to reflect on the adventures of the day. Then tuck yourself in bed with a satisfied feeling, to charge yourself up for a new day full of adventure.

A perfect combination of woodland, water, safari park and attraction park!!

Beekse Bergen is a perfect holiday destination for families with young children. It is a really unique resort, split into 2 parts: the Lake Resort and the Safari Resort.

Beekse Bergen is located in beautiful woodland in the southern Brabant region of the Netherlands. What makes it unique is not only its setting in unspoilt nature with a large swimming lake, sandy lake beaches, indoor pools and the fantastic and extensive toddler friendly “Speelland” play paradise, but the fact that it is adjoining the biggest safari park in the Netherlands. You can drive or walk around the safari park, or go on the boat or bus and see all the animals in their natural surroundings. Here you can really have it all; nature, beaches, safari park and a huge play zone.

In keeping with its safari park setting the Lake Resort has an African theme which can be seen throughout; from its animal print accommodations to its newly opened Ganvie Village, inspired by an African fishing village, and housing the Etsi pool, indoor play, restaurant, bar and supermarket.

For a real safari experience why not book one of the Savannah Lodges on the Safari Resort and watch the giraffes from your veranda as the sun rises and sets.  The Safari Resort has its own indoor children’s pool, bar, restaurant and small shop as well as children’s activities with the park Ranger. The restaurant and adjacent adventure play area have direct views over the African animals. Or why not check out the brand new Safari Hotel with luxurious rooms looking out onto the Savannah and breakfast included?

Beekse Bergen is a large resort with little play areas dotted throughout, plenty of trees to hide behind and lots of sandy areas to play on! Its sandy lake beaches can be used for relaxing, playing or simply taking in the nature!

There is also a little shuttle train, the Ostrich Express, which transports you around the different parts of the resort. Riding around on the shuttle is bound to be one of the highlights for toddlers!!

Discover the Lake Resort’s Etsi pool with its 3 separate areas for swimming, playing or relaxing and take in the views over beautiful Lake Victoria.  Outside, explore Bojo beach, the new fully fenced children’s play beach with adjacent terrace so you can enjoy a drink while the children play.

Another perk of staying in Beekse Bergen accommodation is you get free unlimited access to not only the safari park and the Speelland play zone but also to several other local attractions including some toddler friendly zoos. Free entrance to the safari park alone is a massive saving compared to if you were just visiting for the day.

** Important Information**

Beekse Bergen is host to a number of music events which can be noisy. Dates below to be aware of :

Best Kept Secret music event:  13th-16th June 2025

The Awakenings music event: 11th-14th July 2025

The “Back2School, Decibel” techno music festival:  15th-18th August 2025

There is likely to be some disturbance on the Lake Resort in the days running up to these festivals during set up and in pack down afterwards. The Fridays before the event weekends the facilities on the resorts will be closed but the Safari Park and Speelland will be open. 

Accommodation

The Lake Resort offers a selection of 3 bedroom 1 bathroom Jungalows (bungalows, all jungle themed!) You can choose from giraffe, zebra or leopard themed and they have the stamp of Africa on them inside and out. You can also book a Kids Jungalow which has the added benefits of having an enclosed garden area, a play pen and high chair and free use of a wooden cart to pull your little ones around in all day! Kids Jungalows numbers 6 to 12 have a bath.

Jungalows have ample seating areas and floor space to play inside and as they are detached units they have plenty of outdoor space around them to play too.

New in 2022 is a selection of Lake View and Forest Cabins, located in a peaceful area close to the lake and an easy walk to the main facilities. New from late 2023: Woodland Cabins for 4, 5 and 6 persons.

If you fancy bringing your own tent or caravan you can also book one of the camping pitches on the Lake Resort.

Eurocamp offers a selection of 2 and 3 bedroom Holiday Homes (sleeping up to 8) and 2 bedroom Safari Tents (sleeping up to 6) which are located in their own area on the Lake Resort. Available here are Eurocamp’s newer range of holiday homes: the Premium. The Eurocamp Holiday Homes have their own wooden veranda and the rooms are all on one level, making it super safe for little ones. Eurocamp guests staying 3 nights or longer receive the free attractions pass.

If you want more of a safari experience then you can choose to stay in one of the luxury lodges or in a safari tent or treehouse on the Safari Resort , located by the actual safari park!  The lodges range from  3 bedroom and 2 bathroom  to 4 bedroom 2 bathroom all the way up to the Group Lodges which have 7 bedrooms and 3 bathrooms! There are also Kids Lodges with carts, games and additional safety features. The Savannah Lodges have direct views of the animals.

Brand new in 2023 : Safari Hotel with Savannah Rooms (sleeping from 2 to 5) and Suites (sleeping up to 7). Hotel rooms with direct views of the animals, hotel service and breakfast included!

All Beekse Bergen accommodation comes with free wifi and the free attractions pass.

“Amazing place” We stayed here for 5 days and it was amazing!!! The people working there are super nice and friendly. The lodge was wonderful!! Giraffe, rhinoceros, camel, zebra,… so many animals came in the morning and the evening!!! Beekse Bergen allows you to dream that you are in a safari!!!! We will definitely come back!! ” Family fun” Great place. We have a kiddies jungalow. 3 bedrooms and shower room. Kitchen with hob, dishwasher and a microwave. Lovely safe environment. Free kids entertainment at the Afrika club. Have so far been to the safari park, Speelland (beach type place with water slides, pedalos, bouncy castles etc) kiddie zoo near Eindhoven. All included in the price of the stay. Lovely beaches by Afrika club for kids to splash about in Lake victoriameer. View from our jungalow is amazing.   Chris J Bayley

Baby & Toddler Friendly

All of Beekse Bergen’s accommodation is on one level so you don’t have to worry about stairs. If you choose a children’s Jungalow or Safari Lodge you get the added features of games and toys as well as being fenced off outside. The cupboard doors also all have safety catches. Cots and highchairs can be provided in all accommodations (there is a small charge for a highchair unless you book a kids’ jungalow or kids’ lodge).

With Eurocamp you can prebook the following baby and toddler equipment for free: travel cot, high chair, baby bath, potty, bed rail, changing mat.

There are some lovely towns on your doorstep: Tilburg and Hilvarenbeek are both about a 15 minute drive from the park and have a selection of shops and cafes and restaurants.

Explore the Esbeek woods just 5 minutes drive away.

Discover the beautiful, fortified town of Heusden with its marina, windmills and a super pancake house! (30 mins away).

Further afield you can visit the city of Eindhoven which is 30km away (a 30 minute drive) and you are also only a 10 minute drive over into Belgium. The historical city of Antwerp is only a 1 hour drive away from Beekse Bergen.

Staying on Beekse Bergen also entitles you to free access to a number of local attractions including Eindhoven Zoo (was Dierenrijk Zoo), 35 minutes drive away and Zoopark Overloon which is just over an hour away towards the German border.

The other main highlight of this region in terms of attractions is the famous fairytale theme park of Efteling which is only a 20 minute drive from Beekse Bergen. This is a world of wonder and magic for young children! You are also just 20 minutes drive from the Loonse en Drunense sand dunes.

Has it ever crossed your mind to take a family holiday in Holland? No, it hadn’t mine either until I came across a company called Little Clogs Holidays on Facebook . They were advertising a farm stay in Holland, and it just jumped out at me to take a look. I didn’t realise there was even such a thing as ‘child friendly holidays in Holland!’

We all know how much the girls love animals and how much fun we had staying on a farm last year in Devon , so this year I made it my mission to find another holiday just as good and I think I may have found it.

Before I knew it I had spent over an hour on the internet looking through the Little Clogs website super excited by what I was finding and actually considering a child friendly holiday in Holland. All the holidays advertised were aimed at younger children, with excellent facilities for the under 5’s. There was real variety and so much choice.

Little Clogs Holidays was set up by Laura and Jane, two mums of young children. One a travel specialist and the other a teacher in Holland. Little Clogs’ holidays are hand-picked specifically for families with babies and toddlers, although that isn’t saying that they aren’t suitable for older children too because they are. • The heated indoor and outdoor pools have fantastic toddler exploration pools with little slides and jets and toys to splash about with.
• The Hof Van Saksen beach area has a wonderful large playground and play boat and inflatable jumping pillow to play on! If you would prefer to spend a longer period lakeside then the beach hut has parasols which can be borrowed free of charge.
• The Al Fresco restaurant invites children up to the age of 3 to eat for free and there is a children’s play area within the restaurant.
• The accommodation area is well designed and the houses all have a lot of space around them. There are even little playgrounds where children can come and play alongside their neighbours and you can view them from your garden area.
• There is a variety of accommodation available which include detached, thatched roofed farm house types ranging from comfort to extra luxury, starting at 2 bedrooms and going all the way up to 12 bedrooms!
• All the farmhouses are baby and toddler friendly. Landal Landgoed ‘t Loo

• Landal Landgoed ‘t Loo is centred around a huge recreational lake and beach, complete with zip wire. Here you will find plenty of space to play, relax and your children can explore the air trampoline and playground.
• The lake is surrounded by some of the holiday bungalows.
• You can hire a wide variety of bikes on the park which include child and parent tandems, family bikes and children’s bikes.
• At the edge of the lake you will also find the Park Plaza which is the central hub for activities, recreation and dining. It is here that you will also find the swimming pool which has a separate little pool with slide for toddlers.
• There is a great indoor play area with ropes to climb, a ball pool and more.
• The two level Plaza also offers indoor bowling, a soft play area and a range of shops including a mini-market.
• There is a good choice of restaurants and take-aways which boasts a magnificent terrace overlooking the beach and lake.
• Landgoed’t Loo has a selection of 2, 3 and 4 bedroom detached bungalows available which is set over 2 levels.
• Each type of accommodation is detached and set amongst its own garden with terrace and garden furniture.
• Cots and highchairs are available on request and stairgates are provided at the top of the stairs for extra safety.

• Duinrell holiday and theme park is located in the beautiful village of Wassenaar. It is set in extensive woodland yet is just around the corner from the beautiful coastline of Wassenaarseslag.
• The park itself includes a theme park and water park. The theme park is free to anyone staying on Duinrell and the pool complex is free if you stay in Duinrell accommodation
• The Park Plaza is where you will find a range of restaurants and a snack bar/take away, a large mini-market, an Irish pub and a roof top bar and lounge.

• Many animals can be found on the farm including cows, horses, donkeys, pigs, goats, hens, rabbits and kittens to keep them company!
• Children will learn where milk and eggs come from and can also take part in creative workshops where they can make their own yummy pancakes. They can also pick their own vegetables in the farm garden and help mum and dad with dinner.

• What makes Beekse Bergen unique is not only its setting in unspoilt nature with a large swimming lake, sandy lake beach, indoor jungle pool and the fantastic and extensive toddler friendly “Speelland” play area, but the fact that it is adjoining the biggest safari park in the Netherlands.
• Beekse Bergen is a large park with little play areas dotted throughout, plenty of trees to hide behind and lots of sandy areas to play on!

If you choose a children’s Jungalow or Safari Lodge you get the added features of games and toys as well as being fenced off outside. The cupboard doors also all have safety catches. Efteling Bosrijk Village

• In the middle of this lake you will find the magical home of The Sandman which is beautifully lit up in the evenings with subtle colourful lighting and the location for bedtime stories which are told by The Sandman and other Efteling fairytale characters most evenings
• In the park you will find a little store and a restaurant where you may just get a surprise when one of your favourite Efteling fairytale characters turns up to say hello. There is a convenient children’s activity corner located next to the restaurant too.
• As a guest of Efteling accommodation you have exclusive entrance to the theme park 30 minutes before the general public, where a selection of rides will be ready and waiting for you to enjoy. Staying at Bosrijk includes entrance to Efteling theme park on all days of your stay including arrival and departure days.
• Accommodation is set in three beautiful environments. You can choose between the village square, being lakeside or within the woodlands. All are equally enticing and provide fantastic quality accommodation.
• In the village square you will find perfect holiday houses set in a traditional style providing an authentic ambience. There are homes set in the matured woodland and you can also stay in holiday homes which are sympathetically set on the lake overlooking the beauty of this park. Landal Beach Resort Ooghduyne

Wake up and fall asleep to the sound of the ocean!

• Beach Resort Ooghduyne is located in Julianadorp aan Zee which is the most popular beach in the area.
• But it isn’t just beaches which catch the eye around here as when spring comes around the fields surrounding this area come into magnificent bloom with the colourful floral display that you come to expect from the Dutch.
• There is an indoor pool with slide which is lit by fun lighting that children love to zoom down. For toddlers there’s a quirky lighthouse slide too!
• The playground area is set in its own giant sandpit or the indoor play area created from natural materials.
• A full entertainment program is also available during school holidays.
• Julianadorp is close to the island of Texel linked by a short ferry ride across the water. The trip is well worth it to see this relatively unknown island which was recently recognised as 3rd in the top 10 places to visit in Europe by The Lonely Planet.
• Villas and apartments are available here.
• Apartments offer 1 or 2 bedrooms and can sleep up to 4 people.
• Villas come in a range of sizes from 1- 6 bedrooms and for larger family gatherings even 11 bedrooms sleeping 22 people.
• There is also a choice of 3 or 4 bedroom children’s villas accommodating from 6-8 people. There are a number of additional features that come with this accommodation. These include stair gates, electric socket covers, toys, a Swinx games computer, high chair and more. Providing all the safety and home comforts to make your stay even more relaxing and pleasurable with young children.

The service at Little Clogs has been 5 star. Although this is a hosted stay at Beeske Bergen, Laura at Little Clogs has taken the time to get to know us as a family and helped us choose the most suitable holiday for us. She can do that for you too! We are working on an itinerary so we get the most out of our week. There are just so many places to visit in Holland.  We would highly recommend having a car. These are the rules for driving in Holland .

I have actually started making a list of all my Little Clogs favourites so I can start some more holiday planning soon. I just don’t know which to try next. Will the girls enjoy the fun theme park and amazing toddler pools in Duinrell , or the magical, enchanting fairytale theme park in Efteling ?  I can already see their faces light up here! But then you can’t beat a beach holiday either can you. Holland’s beaches are so natural and stunning, I could quite easily go right now – See just too much choice – so go on, take a look and see what you think!

Text description provided by the architects. Nile Safari Lodge is a luxury eco lodge located on the southern bank of the River Nile overlooking Murchison Falls National Park. At one time one of Uganda's best known lodges, Nile Safari Lodge was showing signs of its age and Localworks was commissioned to lead a complete rebuild and upgrade of the facility to bring it in line with changing requirements in the hospitality industry.

Localworks' architectural concept for the main building was to avoid a ‘real building', instead creating a series of grass thatched roofs that ‘float’ above the landscape to provide the lodge's clients with an exciting ‘bush experience’ through a more direct connection to the surrounding wilderness. The open nature of the design maximises airflow through the structure in what is generally a hot and humid climate, while at the same time generating a series of unexpected views of the river and park for guests as they move through it.

The geometry of the roofs was generated in response to the large number of existing trees on the site, a generally steep topography, and the framing of views into the surrounding landscape. The terraced arrangement of floor levels creates multiple private indoor and outdoor spaces with unique angles into the nature beyond. One of these terraces is defined by a large infinity pool that merges lodge and river. A small open pavilion located on a particularly spectacular spot with long views towards both sunrise and sunset serves as the massage house.

Guest accommodation is provided in eight generous cottages (‘bandas’), each facing the river in complete privacy. Within the bandas, a large central bed overlooks the river across a cantilevered wooden deck, while the contradiction between a luxury environment and the experience of living in nature is further resolved by a widely glazed bathroom with bathtub and indoor/outdoor shower. One of the eight bandas is dedicated to honeymooners and features its own private plunge pool and an outdoor ‘star bed’. A family banda accommodates up to eight people in two large bedrooms, each with a mezzanine, and has its own private living room, swimming pool and terrace.

All primary volumes are north-south orientated to match the prevailing wind direction and protect the interior spaces from the intense equatorial sun. The bandas are raised on stilts to deal with the steep slopes and to enhance the indoor comfort by allowing air to flow under the buildings, which are dominated by natural materials, mainly wood, grass and stone. Eucalyptus poles provide the primary structure in a largely ‘wall-less’ arrangement, with the main building featuring an ornamental ‘diamond grid’ that efficiently stiffens the roof in what is a non-hierarchical structural system.

There is no mechanical cooling anywhere throughout the lodge and the entire facility is powered by photo-voltaic panels. Guests are provided with all amenities of a luxury lodge including private fridges and wireless internet throughout, all powered by the sun. Water is pumped from the river, filtered to drinking water quality using a UV filtration system and then heated by the sun for showers and bathtubs. Waste water is collected in holding tanks and pumped to a location far away from the river banks to allow for safe treatment in an anaerobic baffled reactor with percolation trenches.
