Ogier wins WRC Safari Rally to head Toyota’s Kenya sweep

safari rally kenya wrc

Sebastien Ogier defied teammate Kalle Rovanpera’s charge to head home a dream 1-2-3-4 finish for Toyota Gazoo Racing on a dramatic final day at WRC Safari Rally Kenya.

Ogier (above) , who’s chosen to run only a limited FIA World Rally Championship program, recorded his third victory from just five starts so far this season. But his rally very nearly unraveled in Sunday’s second special stage, Oserian 1, when a patch of Kenya’s infamous, soft and deep fesh-fesh sand sent his GR Yaris Rally1 wide on a right-hand turn.

The Frenchman, fighting hard to recover time lost to Rovanpera in the day’s rocky opener, Malewa 1, clipped a tree and ripped off his car’s entire rear tailgate. Amazingly, he still won the stage and made all the time back, then patched the gap using a trash-can liner to keep dust at bay in the following Hell’s Gate 1.

More permanent repairs in service did not conclude the drama, however, as all four Yaris crews completed the penultimate stage with dust-induced overheating engines. Ogier, one of the hardest hit, saw his lead reduced to just 9.2s before the rally-closing, bonus points-paying Wolf Power Stage finale. There, where the eight-time WRC champ’s run was again not without incident, arriving at the flying finish with a cracked windshield from a flicked-up rock.

Despite the late incident, he was able to secure the win by 6.7s and spearhead Toyota’s second clean sweep in as many Safari Rallies.

Kenya’s President, William Ruto, presented Ogier and co-driver Vincent Landais with their trophies, commemorating Ogier’s second win at the event, amid stunning scenery at Hell’s Gate.

“Unbelievable! Look at that, even on the Power Stage I got a stone on the windscreen,” said Ogier. “We had a lot of issues to face, but it couldn’t have been a more comfortable rally for us in terms of pace. A lot of misfortune but we brought it home.”

Finishing in second place felt like a personal victory for defending WRC champ Rovanpera, who extended his 2023 drivers’ championship lead to 37 points after round seven of 13.

“You always want to fight for the win, but we did our best starting first car on the road, so regarding that I think it’s not fully bad,” noted the 22-year-old Finn. “Good points for the season anyway.”

Takamoto Katsuta’s hopes of surpassing Toyota teammate Elfyn Evans and achieving a third Safari Rally podium vanished when his Yaris’s hybrid unit stopped working, sapping vital performance. The Japanese driver settled for fourth overall, 25.3s back from Evans, with Ogier and Rovanpera almost three minutes up the road from the third-placed Welshman.

Dani Sordo overcame power steering failure in his Hyundai i20 N Rally1 during Sunday’s third stage to finish an isolated fifth at the end of a testing weekend for Hyundai Motorsport, which now trails Toyota by 42 points in the WRC manufacturers’ title race.

Of the other Hyundais, early podium challenger Esapekka Lappi was way down the order after being plagued by transmission issues in his i20 N, while Thierry Neuville, recovering from suspension failure on Friday, could only roll home eighth, almost 25 minutes off the lead. The Belgian did take the five bonus points for winning the Power Stage and maintains second in the WRC standings, but closing down a 37-point deficit to Rovanpera will be a tough ask.

Tire troubles earlier in the rally prevented M-Sport Ford Puma Rally1 drivers Ott Tanak and Pierre-Louis Loubet from mounting any form of attack. They finished sixth and seventh respectively, with Tanak taking the slim consolation of second-fastest time through the Power Stage.

In WRC2, the second tier of international rallying, Kajetan Kajetanowicz secured his second Safari Rally class win in as many years with a masterful drive in the typically challenging conditions.

The Pole cruised to Sunday afternoon’s finish in his Skoda Fabia Evo more than 11 minutes in front of nearest-placed challenger Martin Prokop, moving from ninth to fourth in the WRC2 standings as a result.

Kajetanowicz had battled with M-Sport Ford youngster Gregoire Munster through Friday and Saturday, but found himself comfortably clear at the top when the Fiesta Mk II driver pulled over with a mechanical issue. A measured run through Sunday’s closing six special stages was all that was needed to bring home the victory and finish ninth overall.

“We did it again! It’s an amazing feeling. It seemed to be easy, but it wasn’t. Thank you to my team and Maciej — I think we did quite a good job,” said Kajetanowicz, referencing his co-driver Maciej Szczepaniak.

Completing the overall top 10, Oliver Solberg’s Skoda finished just 30.6s behind Kajetanowicz’s similar car, but with only seven rounds counting toward the WRC2 championship, the 21-year-old Swede had elected not to register for class points in Kenya.

The FIA World Rally Championship returns to Europe next month when the super-fast gravel roads of Rally Estonia host round eight, July 20-23.

Safari Rally Kenya 2024: Entry List + Itinerary

A total of 29 crews will be taking on 229 competitive miles of action in Kenya

Photography by Hyundai, M-Sport, Škoda & Red Bull / Jaanus Ree

Words by James Bowen

In partnership with ewrc-results.com

After a six-week break, the World Rally Championship finally returns for round three of its global adventure, as the series embarks on its first gravel rally of the year on Safari Rally Kenya.

What was already one of the toughest events on the calendar has been made even more challenging by the return of the Safari to its traditional spring calendar slot. That puts it right into Kenya’s heaviest rainy season, and could be the catalyst for plenty of drama on the stages this weekend.

Safari Rally Kenya promises an Easter weekend of epic entertainment, and here’s everything you need to know.

Rally Safari Kenya Entry List

Total 29 crews 9 Rally1 crews 14 Rally2 crews (13 WRC2) 1 Rally3 crew (1 WRC3) 5 Group N crews

Jourdan Serderidis increases M-Sport's lineup to three cars in Kenya

The top class field remains at nine cars for the second consecutive rally, but there’s one new face in the field compared to last time out in Sweden.

That face belongs to Greek privateer Jourdan Serderidis, who has reversed his decision to retire from the WRC’s top level after last year’s Acropolis Rally Greece and returns to the seat of an M-Sport Ford Puma this weekend.

He’ll join M-Sport regulars Adrien Fourmaux, fresh from his first WRC podium in Sweden, and Grégoire Munster in the Cumbrian squad’s three-car line-up.

After winning the opening two WRC events of 2024, Hyundai enters an identical line-up to the last event in Sweden, with points-leader Thierry Neuville and 2019 world champion Ott Tänak again joined by Esapekka Lappi, who’ll be on the hunt for back-to-back WRC victories.

Defending manufacturers’ champions Toyota will also field an unchanged squad, with reigning WRC champion Kalle Rovanperä making his second start of the year, alongside full-season duo Elfyn Evans and Takamoto Katsuta.

Kajetan Kajetanowicz has won the last two editions of Safari Rally Kenya in WRC2 and starts his 2024 season here

Five brands are represented across the 14 Rally2 crews in Kenya, in what should be a hotly contested battle for supremacy.

Rally Sweden WRC2 winner and joint-series points leader Oliver Solberg returns to Kenya in his Toksport Škoda Fabia RS, but this time will score WRC2 points, as will his team-mate Gus Greensmith, who will make his first start of the season on the Safari.

Defending Keyna class-winner Kajetan Kajetanowicz also makes his first start of the year in the latest generation Fabia, as does compatriot Daniel Chwist.

Frenchman and Hyundai customer Nicolas Ciamin heads the South Korean brand’s charge in Kenya, while Charles Munster, brother of Rally1 driver Grégoire, makes his WRC2 debut behind the wheel of another i20 N Rally2.

Junior WRC regular Diego Domínguez Jr. joins the WRC2 field in the sole Citroën C3 entered, while a host of African rallying stars will test themselves against the WRC2 regulars, including Kenya’s Carl Tundo in his Ford Fiesta R5, and Tanzania’s Yasin Nasser, who makes his WRC debut behind the wheel of a Fiesta Rally2.

Hamza Anwar was a regular competitor in the Junior WRC last year

Last year’s Junior African Rally champion Hamza Anwar is the sole WRC3 entrant, and the Kenyan will start his home WRC event for the fourth consecutive year driving a Ford Fiesta Rally3.

Safari Rally Kenya Itinerary

This year’s Safari Rally Kenya will cover 229 competitive miles (368 km), the longest edition since it returned to the WRC calendar in 2021.

The first of the rally’s 19 stages takes place on Thursday afternoon, with the Kasarani superspecial pitting drivers against each other across the jumps and bumps of this epic opening test just outside Kenya’s capital city of Nairobi.

Friday is the event’s first full day and will take the crews away from the service park to the rough roads around Lake Naivasha. The morning loop consists of three stages totaling 40 miles (64 km), repeated in the afternoon following a lunchtime service.

Saturday is the rally’s longest day, featuring six stages including the mammoth 22-mile (36 km) Sleeping Warrior test. After 100 miles (161 km) of grueling Saturday action, the first points of the weekend will be provisionally awarded.

Super Sunday comprises 46 miles (74 km) of action across six stages on the roads around Lake Elmenteita, with only a short 15-minute service to work on the cars after the third test of the day, Hell’s Gate. The rally concludes with the second running of the 7-mile (11 km) Hell’s Gate stage, which serves as the powerstage.

Preview: Safari Rally Kenya

This week's Safari Rally Kenya (28 – 31 March) promises to deliver one of the most arduous tests since its triumphant return to the FIA World Rally Championship calendar three years ago.

After a six-week break since navigating the sub-zero forests of Sweden, drivers and teams now face a completely different challenge as round three of the season begins on Thursday amidst the captivating plains and vibrant wildlife of Africa. This year’s Safari Rally has been strategically moved forward in the calendar to reclaim its historic March slot, aligning perfectly with Kenya’s rainy season. Pre-rally downpours muddied some of the roads during recce, and many of the cars are running snorkels – which allow the engine to breathe - to deal with potentially flooded sections. In Kenya, all eyes are on Toyota Gazoo Racing. The GR Yaris Rally1 team has won every edition since 2021, and even claimed a sensational top-four sweep here 12 months ago. Despite its formidable track record, however, Toyota is still searching for its first triumph of the season. Elfyn Evans, Takamoto Katsuta and reigning world champion Kalle Rovanperä will each hope to change that. Rovanperä topped the podium in 2022, while Katsuta – who hails from Japan – has netted an impressive two podiums from three Safari starts.

Hyundai Motorsport stands ready to challenge Toyota's African supremacy, and to extend its success streak with i20 N drivers Thierry Neuville, Ott Tänak and Esapekka Lappi. Rallye Monte-Carlo winner Neuville currently leads the drivers’ championship by three points from Evans, while a hungry Lappi recorded his second career victory last time out in Sweden. M-Sport Ford enters Kenya on a high after young Frenchman Adrien Fourmaux scored his maiden podium at the previous round. The British team fields a trio of Puma Rally1 cars for Fourmaux, Grégoire Munster and gentleman driver Jourdan Serderidis. The rally starts in capital city Nairobi on Thursday lunchtime. Ahead lie 19 gruelling special stages around Lakes Naivasha and Elmenteita covering 367.76km before Sunday afternoon's finish in Naivasha.

'Like driving in a zoo': Rally drivers startled by rogue zebras, pigs on high-speed stages

Simon Chapman

A quirk of arguably the toughest car rally in the world reared its head when several drivers were forced to slow for zebras and pigs making their way onto the course.

Ford driver Ott Tanak and Hyundai's part-timer Dani Sordo both came upon the wildlife on a special stage two of Safari Rally Kenya.

"It's like driving in a zoo. We met a pig and then we had a group of zebras who didn't give a f---," said Tanak.

Sordo said, "We saw some zebras in the middle of the stage and we were stuck behind them."

Sordo and Tanak lost time as a result, ending the stage sixth and seventh respectively.

Tanak had led the rally after Thursday's opening super special stage, but fell to sixth.

Sordo's teammate Thierry Neuville was fourth quickest in the second stage despite a bee finding its way into the cockpit.

"It's very shaky in there and we got kicked off the line and we had a big bee in the car," he said at the special stage control.

Sebastien Ogier leads the rally after the second stage, nearly 10 seconds clear of Toyota teammate Kalle Rovanpera while Neuville sits third.

The four-day FIA World Rally Championship event is one of the most gruelling, with some of the toughest roads that challenge even the most developed cars.

This year marks the third edition of Rally Kenya since the world championship ended its 19-year hiatus.

The event was a staple of the calendar from 1973 through to 2002 but was absent until 2021.

The 2022 edition is the 70th running of the event, which debuted in 1953.

Stan Sport will carry live, ad-free coverage of SS9 and SS12 from 4pm and 10pm respectively on Saturday.

Coverage continues on Sunday with SS16 at 4pm and SS19 at 9pm on Sunday.

Neuville hopeful Hyundai has addressed WRC Kenya reliability woes

T he Safari Rally, which hosts the third round of the WRC season this week, is renowned as a car-breaker thanks to its unique blend of rough terrain and changeable weather.

It has proven to be a bogey event for Hyundai since the event returned to the calendar in 2021, with its only podium finish to date achieved by Ott Tanak finishing third three years ago. The last two editions have seen Toyota score a 1-2-3-4 lock out while Hyundai battled mechanical issues.

Last year, Neuville suffered a suspension failure which ended hopes of victory as the Belgian recovered to finish eighth on the road, before officials excluded him from the event following a breach of recce rules.

Team-mate Esapekka Lappi was in podium contention but a trio of propshaft failures curtailed his rally, while Dani Sordo finished a distant fifth.

Hyundai has since addressed its reliability issues through a series of upgrades in the off-season, and has made a strong start to 2024, winning the opening two events in Monte Carlo (Neuville) and Sweden (Lappi).

Championship leader Neuville believes Hyundai will head to Africa stronger than in previous years.

“I think so,” Neuville told Autosport when asked if he thought Hyundai had resolved its reliability issues.

“We have constantly improved, however Kenya has been a tough event for us and for all of Hyundai over the past years, so hopefully the fourth time we go there we should be reliable enough.”

Thierry Neuville, Hyundai World Rally Team

Photo by: Vincent Thuillier / Hyundai Motorsport

Neuville said Hyundai's pre-event test in Spain was productive, adding: “It wasn’t the greatest surface and conditions but at least we were running the car at altitude, so it was interesting to also work on those parameters of the car.”

This year’s Safari Rally reverts to a more traditional Easter date instead of the June berth that the event held since its return in 2021.

As a result, the rally will take place during Kenya’s rainy season which increases the likelihood of changeable weather. To help combat the possibility of heavy rain, Rally1 cars will be able to fit snorkel devices following a change in regulations.

When asked about the possibility of extreme weather, Neuville responded: “We expect it to be hot but wet. It could be less rough, but it could be more of a lottery due to the weather.

“If there is a lot of rain definitely, [snorkels will be crucial].”

Hyundai team principal Cyril Abiteboul added: “Safari Rally Kenya is a historically challenging event for us. The unique conditions increase the potential for cars to succumb to technical issues caused by the surroundings, meaning we have to focus on being robust and reliable first and foremost.

“We have made a strong start to the season so we must go to Kenya with belief in ourselves. It is the first gravel event of the 2024 season, making it somewhat a testing ground for the 2024 iteration of our car.

“Our performance last year showed promise, so we are hoping to take it one step further and leave Kenya with a podium finish as a minimum.”
