Daytrotter Session
October 4, 2012.
The Revival Tour joined Daytrotter at the end of the spring tour in Rock Island, IL to record a session.
“ For this day and night at the end of the spring tour, Ragan brought his raggedy band of brothers to Rock Island. He, Cory Branan, Nathaniel Rateliff and auxiliary musicians Joe Ginsberg and Jon Gaunt were joined that day by Tom Gabel of Against Me! (who would just weeks later announce his transformation into Laura Jane Grace). On these recordings (minus Gabel, who rested on the bus as they were happening), which run through the solo work of all, one can hear the camaraderie of five men determined to get to the bottom of just what’s being asked of them in life. They are willing to see their days run out and all blood spilled just to learn that there’s something at the ends of all these roads that might be worth continuing for and not just some rambling chase for the chase’s sake. Ragan sings, “Are we not the ones that manifest our destiny/Are we not the ones that spill blood in the streets/Are we not the ones that eat our young, destroy the land and sea/Then cry for help when all is said and done,” and it’s that thought – of when all is said and done – that he and these other men want to feel good about. It’s important to them that there’s something worthwhile, when the punctuation closes for them. ”
Thank you to Daytrotter for having us out! Visit their website to listen to and download the session.
Chuck Ragan Compiles Tour Stories In ‘The Road Most Traveled’
The Road Most Traveled is more than just a collection of anecdotes, it’s as much a handbook of how to act on tour as it is a cautionary tale of what not to do if you want to sustain this lifestyle for years to come. There couldn’t be a better person to put together this tome than Chuck Ragan and here he’s collected tales from members of the Gaslight Anthem, Rise Against, At the Drive-In and many more, all of whom share their own unique perspective on travel. The road isn’t always glamorous, but for some of us it’s in our blood. These are those stories.
Collecting road stories and cautionary tales from Berlin to Boston, Hollywood to Helsinki, each chapter offers a unique perspective on travel and how to survive it. Each chapter has its own voice and its own pearls of wisdom, from Greg Anntonito of The Bouncing Souls espousing the importance of sleep and water (“if you are touring for up to nine months a year, you have to develop endurance and a healthy lifestyle. Especially if you are a lead singer”) while internationally-published journalist Jonah Bayer finds sage advice in Bill and Ted (“the most valuable lesson that I’ve learned is simply to ‘be excellent to each other’”). Yo-yo demonstrator Steve Brown urges the need to explore (“No matter how tired you are, how broke you are, how little you feel loved or appreciated . . . go check out that county fair”) while Gaslight Anthem’s Brian Fallon advocates not taking this touring life for granted (“I realized one day I’m going to be too old, or too tired, or just called to something else, so I need to enjoy this now. Live today. Watch everything, absorb everything, breathe it in”). Narratives such as these and many more from Rise Against’s Tim McIlrath, Chunksaah Records president Kate Hiltz, At The Drive-In’s Jim Ward, and many more offer snapshots into a world than many have never witnessed while, at the same time, providing much-needed advice to those actually living that lifestyle.
“This book is dedicated to those who have, and continue to live a life on the road, and to our loved ones who’ve dealt with our absence which is result of this way of life and work,” begins The Road Most Traveled, an inspiring assemblage of stories, tales and anecdotes about life on the road and how to survive it. Told by The Camaraderie Collective which consists of members of assorted punk and indie rock bands such as Flogging Molly, Samiam, Social Distortion, Frank Turner, Joe Gittlemen, Mighty Mighty Bosstones, Dropkick Murphy’s Al Barr, William Elliot Whitmore, managers, bus drivers, crews, label personnel, and other folks who lived and worked just as long on the road behind the curtains and the lights. These stories were compiled by consummate road warrior, CHUCK RAGAN who himself logs over two thirds of each year on tour with his long-running band HOT WATER MUSIC, his Americana/folk solo career, and his traveling folk multi-artist ensemble THE REVIVAL TOUR. “I chose the road at an early age,” he writes in the foreward. “Although I found amazing places, stories, and people, I’ve lost just as many. I’ll say, looking back on the course of it all, I wouldn’t change a thing.”
You can buy The Road Most Traveled from our store or www.ChuckRaganMusic.com for only $19.99, as well as at some of your favorite bands’ merch tables.

July 22, 2012.
Featuring Chuck Ragan, Cory Branan, Emily Barker, Jay Malinowski, and Rocky Votolato
“In the last five years that I’ve had the opportunity of being on The Revival Tour, it’s been nothing but an invigorating breath of fresh air amongst the sea of live music out there today,” explains Americana singer/songwriter Chuck Ragan about the musical and cultural collaborative phenomenon that he helped create. “The revolving showcase of real music by real people in a simple grassroots fashion seems it originated in the old days from families and communities sharing music together, this is the simple ethic in live music events that we aim to revive.” The UK and European edition this Fall kicks off with a multi-national collection of amazing storytellers in Ragan, American singer/songwriter Cory Branan (who played on this past Spring’s US edition), South Australia’s Emily Barker, Canada’s Jay Malinowski from reggae band Bedouin Soundclash and Texan Rocky Votolato.

‘The Revival Tour’ Documentary Celebrates Collaboration – Premiere

Last year, Ragan was joined by Cory Branan and Jay Malinowski of Bedouin Soundclash, touring the world in stripped-down style. Inside Rolling Stone’s Austin Rock Room: Hot Water Music
“From the top, we [all] play and sing together, showcasing a song from each artist’s catalog that’s on the bill that evening,” Ragan tells Rolling Stone of the tour’s special format. “There’re usually five to six artists as well as back-up accompaniment of fiddles, upright bass, mandolins, banjos and more. After this, most will peel off to spotlight one of the artists aboard who’ll present their own works.” In the spirit of collaboration, the following artist joins the one onstage to play along, creating a series of seamless transitions.

“Revival is always different, always a learning experience and always exhilarating,” says Ragan. “We all realize why we’re there and find a moment in time where we leave our troubles at the door [and] to find something in common with strangers.”
This year’s edition of the Revival Tour, the sixth one, features Ragan, Votolato, Rise Against frontman Tim McIlrath, Streetlight Manifesto’s Toh Kay, Los Angeles musician Jenny O, Loved Ones’ Dave Hause and New Jersey-based singer-songwriter Jenny Owen Youngs. The tour kicks off on March 15th at Corpus Christi, Texas’ House of Rock and wraps up April 23rd at L.A.’s El Rey Theatre. For full tour dates and tickets, visit the Revival Tour’s website .

Like everything in life, you can blame the hippies.
Filthy, filthy hippies.
Review: Chuck Ragan's Revival Tour a celebration of communal music-making Back to video
For you see at one time making music was considered a communal thing. Something that was done in kitchens. Something that was done around the campfire. Something that was done in barns, basements, backyards, on a boat and with a goat, etc.
Until the hippies came along a ruined it for everyone with their idiotic, rhythm-challenged drum circles and unwashed, peyote-fueled moon howlings and marathon, hacky-sacking and hula-hooping Phish festivals.

Stupid hippies.
An excellent thing, then, when you can see it reclaimed by regular, non-hippie folk, actual musicians whose love of creating together is a key ingredient of the excellence they create
Tuesday night at the Commonwealth Bar and Stage Calgarians were treated to that with the second of the Revival Tour’s two-night stand in the city.
The labour of love of Chuck Ragan, frontman for American post punk act Hot Water Music, the acoustic tour is the musical equivalent of Kumbaya sans soap-dodgers and dreadlocks on Caucasians. Since 2008, Ragan has collected together some friends and musical heroes to tour together and play together for the love of it.
That love was on full display Tuesday night in front of what was a somewhat sparser crowd than Monday’s sold-out first show.
And by all accounts, perhaps even helped by the fact there was actual space to breathe and enjoy, it was even more of an evening to remember.
The setup: simple. Ragan and guests play a set together, then everyone gets their own 15-20 minutes set where the other musicians can join in if they want, and the night closes with another communal set.
The results: magic. Pure magic.
Joining the ringleader and his two touring partners on this particular jaunt was Craig Finn from alt rock act The Hold Steady, Tim Barry from Virginia punk act Avail, Jay Malinowski from Canadian pop act Bedouin Soundclash, and locals Miesha Louie and Danny Vacon (prom king and queen of the Calgary rock scene).
And all of them got it. All of them came to play, confident enough in their own talents to take a backseat (or tambourine) when needed, and game enough to throw themselves into it. They all looked like they were having a ball and that energy and enthusiasm was infectious.
Even when they weren’t onstage, they stood beside it, taking in what the others were doing and, by the smiles, grooves and headnods, loving every minute of it.
The beauty of it, too, was that surrendering to the group didn’t mean surrendering their own identities. Finn was still the intense, wordy accountant; Barry was like a skinnier, likeable Larry the Cable Guy who was more than happy to hop in the crowd and get with the masses; Malinowski was a hearththrob with a smooth, pop croon; Vacon was his typically affable and f-ing cool self; his counterpart Louie was charged and brooding; and Ragan, himself, was everything you’d want from a host — warm, gracious, inviting, encouraging and generous — while also showing off he’s one hell of a rustic, troubadour.
And musically, the evening was more than generous, clocking it at almost three, fluid hours of songs that spanned the familiar — each artist playing their own solo stuff or material from their other bands — to material that only seemed familiar.
It was rousing, it was soothing, it was inspiring, it was for imbibing, it was for singing along to, it was for being a part of, being one with, a communal, musical night.
In the best, washed and shampooed sense imaginable.

Chuck Ragan, Tim Barry and Ben Nichols announce “The Revival Tour”
Chuck Ragan of Hot Water Music , Tim Barry of Avail and Ben Nicols of Lucero have announced plans to tour together this fall.
All the tours that I've done since I've been doing this solo stuff have in some way or the other ended up with a bunch of friends onstage by the end of the night, I've always loved seeing that and now I'm absolutely loving creating something like that with good friends who think and believe along the same lines.
The three of us have been in bands that each have their own sound, but I think we're all coming from the same place musically concerning this tour, When it comes down to it, we all appreciate good songs and good songwriters and that's what this tour is all about," he adds, "stripping everything down to its basic form and playing some good songs with some of your friends. The idea of Woody Guthrie, just a man and a guitar, is very appealing to all of us--and the chance to be a part of something like that with Chuck and Tim is something I couldn't pass up. We all have our own types of songs, but I think it'll be a blast basically sitting around a campfire every night playing music with some friends.
While the tour will feature individual sets from each artist, it will be more reminiscent of the folk tradition of involving multiple artist collaborations--and each performer will have guests coming on and off stage, including the three primary songwriters who plan to hunker down in Barry's Richmond, Virginia backyard this summer to learn each other's respective tracks.
Dates are expected to be announced soon.

TV Revivals: The latest Chuck season 6 revival hopes
Chuck , TV Revivals February 2, 2018
Unfortunately, Chuck has also been off the air for a little while now and it’s hard to know precisely how it could come back, let alone when.
The last we reported on a possible Chuck revival , Zachary Levi made it clear that he was interested in doing more of the show in a way that is similar to how Psych recently did their own revival movie. He’d love to work with a partner like Netflix and release a new movie every couple of years through the platform. The idea makes a little more sense than just doing a straight-up season 6 — it gives fans a little bit of what they want while also respecting the fact that the cast all are working on a number of different projects now. It’s just hard to get everyone together in the same place for all that long anymore. Levi has Shazam coming up, whereas co-star Yvonne Strahovski is now a huge part of The Handmaid’s Tale over on Hulu.
The first order of business is finding a platform that would even be interested in doing a Chuck revival, given that without someone funding it there’s really no sense in even doing anything else. It looks like the trend of reviving things via Kickstarter is already fading into the rear-view mirror and, beyond that, Netflix isn’t in a position anymore where they really need to revive programming on other networks. We don’t think finding a home is as easy as it was a few years ago when streaming providers were desperate for content.
The best thing fans can do
Make sure it’s still known that the demand remains there. Continue tweeting about the show and maybe, at some point down the line, we’ll get someone organizing some sort of movement. Sometimes, big things can come from people making a big display of passion.
As for whether or not Chuck needs a revival, we’ll say (and this may be controversial) that we were personally satisfied with the original ending. We feel like Sarah Walker eventually rebuilds the life she once had after losing her memories and she and Chuck live a happily ever after together. We just want more Chuck out of our sheer desire to keep seeing these characters and this story.
