You see, I didn’t have the best travel toiletry bag, but I thought it was at least good enough to handle some turbulence-induced jostling, aggressive rifling via the hands of the TSA, and my generally careless luggage shlepping methods. I was wrong. As soon as we arrived at our hotel, I unzipped my travel bag in search of my brand new dress. I found it…covered in…**sniffs**… body wash ? Or was that shampoo ? Or my…you’ve got to be kidding me…$150 vitamin C serum ? I’m still not sure, because my toiletry bag zipper broke at some point during my travels, leaving all of my prized 1.5-oz tinctures, creams, essences, and potions to spill.

This toiletry bag and I were acquainted since my middle school days. If I had listened to my better judgment and invested in a high-quality option, I wouldn’t have run into this vicious conundrum. On the bright side, I made the mistake so that you don’t have to.

What should you look for when buying a toiletry bag or Dopp kit?

What to Look for in a Passport Holder

Passport holders fall into two main subcategories: simple protective sleeves that act as a weather- and spill-resistant cover for your passport only, and wallet-style holders that typically provide space for other essentials as well. Which is the better choice depends on your personal preference. If you already have a trusted carry-on, purse, or backpack to conveniently store the rest of your travel necessities and purely want to keep your passport in tip-top condition, a protective sleeve may be all you require. However, a wallet-style holder lets you keep everything in one place and may allow you to streamline your packing so much that you can use it as your primary personal item or carry-on.

Passport holders come in a variety of fabrics: most usually leather, faux leather, or polyester. Whichever you choose, look for quality materials built for long-lasting durability with reinforced seams and straps (if applicable). Leather is often perceived as the sturdiest and most stylish option, but can be expensive. There are good plastic-based, faux leather options out there that offer the same aesthetic for a fraction of the price while also scoring better in terms of sustainability and animal ethics (depending on their construction). RFID-blocking lining is a bonus for anyone concerned about cyber identity theft.

Passport holders keep precious documents protected and secure while traveling. However, be prepared to remove the passport from its case or cover when presenting it to customs officials.

Many passport holders help store the document discretely and away from  pickpockets’ sticky fingers . Thailand’s progressive Move Forward party braces for court case that might dissolve it

BANGKOK (AP) — The former leader of Thailand’s progressive opposition Move Forward party vowed on Sunday to keep fighting as the party faces a court case that could result in its dissolution.

The Constitutional Court has agreed to rule on whether the party violated the constitution by proposing to amend a law that forbids defaming the country’s royal family. The petition requested the party’s dissolution and a 10-year ban on political activity by its executives. The court has not said when it will rule on this case.

Pita Limjaroenrat , the former leader of Move Forward , laid out the details of the party’s legal defenses that have been submitted to the court at a news conference on Sunday.

“If there is a rule of law in Thailand, I’m extremely confident” the party’s arguments will prevail, he said.

Pita said the Constitutional Court does not have jurisdiction to rule on this case and that the petition filed by the Election Commission did not follow due process because Move Forward was not given an opportunity to defend itself before the case was submitted to the court.

The petition was filed after the same court ruled in January that the party must stop advocating changes to the law, known as Article 112 in Thailand’s criminal codes, which protects the monarchy from criticism by imposing penalties of three to 15 years in jail per offense.

That ruling did not set any punishment for the party.

Move Forward shook up Thai politics by winning the most seats in the general election last year but was blocked from taking power and has since been fighting several legal battles to keep its positions in Parliament. These legal cases are seen as part of a yearslong attack against the country’s progressive movement by conservative forces trying to keep their grip on power.

Move Forward’s predecessor, the Future Forward party, was dissolved by the Constitutional Court in 2020 for violating election laws on donations to political parties.

Move Forward has insisted that it wants to keep the monarchy above politics and not be exploited as a political tool.

Thailand’s monarchy is considered untouchable but student-led pro-democracy protests, triggered by the dissolution of Future Forward in 2020, began to challenge that sentiment by openly criticizing the monarchy. That led to vigorous prosecutions under the law, which critics say is often used as a tool to quash political dissent.

The advocacy group Thai Lawyers for Human Rights says that since early 2020, more than 270 people have been charged with violating Article 112. Some of those are Move Forward’s own lawmakers .

Thailand’s courts, especially the Constitutional Court, are considered a bulwark of the country’s traditional royalist establishment, which has used them and nominally independent state agencies such as the Election Commission to issue rulings to cripple or sink political opponents.

Pita warned that getting rid of the country’s largest opposition party would mean “an attack on democracy” as it would weaken the mechanism of checks and balances on the government.

“The strength of democracy is not about how robust the government is, but how fair and active the opposition is,” he said.

The Move Forward party finished first in the 2023 general election after campaigning to amend Article 112 and introduce other democratic reforms. The victory indicated that many Thai voters were ready for change after nearly a decade of military-controlled government.

But the military-installed Senate blocked the party from taking power by refusing to confirm Pita, who was the party’s candidate for prime minister. Senators said they opposed Pita because of his intention to enact reforms to the monarchy.

Judge Recuses From Gaza Case After Wartime Trip to Israel (1)

A federal appellate judge said he will recuse himself from a Palestinian challenge to US military aid for Israel, after he visited the country this year.

Judge Ryan Nelson of the US Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit said in an order Thursday that “it is far from certain that an objective observer would reasonably question my impartiality.”

“That said, out of an abundance of caution, the best course in this specific case (which may not apply in other cases) is to recuse,” he said.

Palestinian parties in the case alleging the US has failed to prevent a genocide in Gaza pointed to Nelson’s travel to Israel in March with 13 other judges on a trip backed by the World Jewish Congress.

Even if Nelson believed he could impartially hear the case, they said recusal “is necessary to ensure the appearance of fairness to the parties and promote the integrity of our legal process.”

Baher Azmy, the legal director for the Center for Constitutional Rights which is representing the Palestinian parties in the matter, said they filed the request because the case “is of great importance to our clients and to the public and agree that full appearance of fairness is paramount given these stakes.”

Judge Consuelo Callahan will replace Nelson on the panel and the case will be heard on June 10 as scheduled, according to a court order.

Nelson and most of the other judges on the trip are Donald Trump appointees who met with Israeli government and judicial officials as well as members of the Israel Defense Forces, according to an itinerary provided by WJC.

Members of the group also visited sites related to Hamas’ Oct. 7 attack in Israel and met with victims and families of hostages held by Hamas, as well as a Palestinian activist.

Other judges who participated in the trip have been outspoken about the Israel-Hamas War, with at least two saying they won’t hire law clerks who’ve signed statements those judges believe endorsed Hamas’ attacks.

Thirteen federal judges have also said they won’t hire law clerks from Columbia University over the institution’s handling of pro-Palestinian protests on campus.

A group of anonymous law clerks last month said in an open statement that while judges have spoken on the topic, they have been forced to stay quiet, or risk potentially losing their clerkships for violating ethics rules.

The conviction of former President Donald J. Trump on Thursday is just the latest step in his legal odyssey in New York’s court system. The judge, Juan M. Merchan, set Mr. Trump’s sentencing for July 11, at which point he could be sentenced to as much as four years behind bars, or to probation.

It won’t stop him from running for president, though: There is no legal prohibition on felons doing that . No constitutional provision would stop him even from serving as president from a prison cell, though in practice that would trigger a crisis that courts would almost certainly have to resolve.

His ability to vote — for himself, presumably — depends on whether he is sentenced to prison. Florida, where he is registered, requires felons convicted there to complete their full sentence, including parole or probation, before regaining voting rights. But when Floridians are convicted in another state, Florida defers to the laws of that state, and New York disenfranchises felons only while they are in prison.

“Because Florida recognizes voting rights restoration in the state of conviction, and because New York’s law states that those with a felony conviction do not lose their right to vote unless they are incarcerated during the election, then Trump will not lose his right to vote in this case unless he is in prison on Election Day,” said Blair Bowie, a lawyer at the Campaign Legal Center, a nonprofit watchdog group.

Mr. Trump will almost certainly appeal his conviction, after months of criticizing the case and attacking the Manhattan district attorney, who brought it, and Justice Merchan, who presided over his trial.

Long before that appeal is heard, however, Mr. Trump will be enmeshed in the gears of the criminal justice system.

A pre-sentencing report makes recommendations based on the defendant’s criminal record — Mr. Trump had none before this case — as well as his personal history and the crime itself. The former president was found guilty of falsifying business records in relation to a $130,000 payment to Stormy Daniels, a porn star who says she had a brief sexual tryst with Mr. Trump in 2006, in order to buy her silence.

At the pre-sentence interview, a psychologist or social worker working for the probation department may also talk to Mr. Trump, during which time the defendant can “try to make a good impression and explain why he or she deserves a lighter punishment,” according to the New York State Unified Court System.

The pre-sentencing report can also include submissions from the defense, and may describe whether “the defendant is in a counseling program or has a steady job.”

In Mr. Trump’s case, of course, he is applying — as it were — for a steady job as president of the United States, a campaign that may be complicated by his new status as a felon. Mr. Trump will likely be required to regularly report to a probation officer, and rules on travel could be imposed.

Mr. Trump was convicted of 34 Class E felonies, New York’s lowest level , each of which carry a potential penalty of up to four years in prison. Probation or home confinement are other possibilities that Justice Merchan can consider.

That said, Justice Merchan has indicated in the past that he takes white-collar crime seriously . If he did impose prison time, he would likely impose the punishment concurrently, meaning that Mr. Trump would serve time on each of the counts he was convicted of simultaneously.

If Mr. Trump were instead sentenced to probation, he could still be jailed if he were later found to have committed additional crimes. Mr. Trump, 77, currently faces three other criminal cases: two federal, dealing with his handling of classified documents and his efforts to overturn the 2020 election , and a state case in Georgia that concerns election interference.

Mr. Trump’s lawyers can file a notice of appeal after sentencing, scheduled for July 11 at 10 a.m. And the judge could stay any punishment during an appeal, something that could delay punishment beyond Election Day.

The proceedings will continue even if he wins: Because it’s a state case, not federal, Mr. Trump would have no power as president to pardon himself .

Joel Kaimakani Libed discovered treasure on the road: a Spam variety pack from the Spam Museum in Minnesota. He just had to get it home.

After lugging “at least 10 to 15 pounds’ worth” of the canned meat on a bus during the tour for an Irish dance show, the 32-year-old singer and actor realized his checked bag on the flight home would be overweight. He packed a carry-on bag full — and then it got flagged at the Transportation Security Administration checkpoint.

It’s a scenario many Spam fans — or as the brand calls them, SPAMbassadors — have encountered, if social media is any indication. A video that has gone viral on TikTok shows the result in Libed’s case: He narrates his haul amid bursts of laughter, listing the flavors and expressing his excitement.

“So it’s all — it’s a case of Spam that I’m taking,” he says as a blue-gloved TSA agent unzips the bag. “I’m so embarrassed.”

The TSA agent asks if the flavors are regular and, assured they are special, says: “That’s fine then.” He ultimately pulls out 10 cans of Spam and warns Libed that he needs to do a test before letting them though.

In an interview with The Washington Post, Libed said he started “freaking out” that his Spam might be confiscated — and that the agents would see his haul at all. He put the standard flavors in his checked bag because he didn’t want to risk damage to the harder-to-find cans like teriyaki , hickory smoke and maple .

“I’m like shaking with nervousness, cracking up. I didn’t want to lose any of it,” he said. “I’m a little embarrassed because who travels with a full case of Spam? I was already overexplaining because I was nervous.”

He had no need to worry. TSA even reposted his video on Instagram with pun-filled captions as a reminder to pack smart, with Spam’s social media team hopping into the comments to assure people that Libed, who lives in Massachusetts, got to keep the meat.

TSA spokesperson R. Carter Langston said travelers can theoretically bring as much Spam as their carry-on bag space can hold.

“There isn’t a limit on solid food,” he said. “If somebody wants to take 100 cans of Spam, it would be okay.”

Informed about the official stance, Libed said: “Challenge accepted.”

He and Spam go way back: back to his childhood in Hawaii, to breakfasts of the simple pork product with rice and eggs or snacks of Spam stacked on rice and wrapped in nori at the beach. He hopes to one day make it to the Waikiki Spam Jam , a springtime food festival dedicated to the meat.

As a food that American soldiers spread around the globe during World War II, Spam can offer a nostalgic reminder of home — and a souvenir to bring along once a visit has ended. Libed says he’s had family members in Hawaii buy cases at Costco and ship them to him. He once found a hot and spicy version in a Pennsylvania Wal-Mart while he was there doing a show and bought three cases to drive home.

“A Hawaii boy being all the way out in Massachusetts, I’ve got to get my fix,” he said. So when he discovered that his first tour stop in Austin, Minn. — where parent company Hormel Foods is headquartered — was home to the Spam Museum, he said he screamed. He visited briefly with about 20 dancers from his show, took in the history and browsed the gift shop. According to the brand, the museum gets 100,000 visitors a year.

“It felt like Disneyland to me,” Libed said. Later, he bonded over a shared love of Spam with a woman backstage who was ironing the performers’ clothes. She stepped out for a short time and returned with a gift of the cans for him in early May. It was a little more than two weeks later when he had to fly home with the cans.

His video about the experience, which happened May 25, has been viewed more than 4.7 million times.

Eric Rivera, a Raleigh-based chef, reposted the video on X and said in an interview that he related to Libed’s experience.

“I’ve totally done that,” he said. As a Puerto Rican who grew up mostly in Seattle, he said he has been eating Spam since he was a kid and still loves to use it in cooking. One of his dogs is named Spam. He has a tattoo of Spam musubi, the dish that includes rice and a seaweed wrap. He’s visited the museum — twice.

“I showed them my tattoo and they gave me a can of Spam,” he said. “I didn’t know this was the secret handshake.”

Jennesa Kinscher, senior brand manager for Spam, said in a statement that it wasn’t surprising so many people make a trip to the museum.

“SPAM® products have integrated into many different cultures and cuisines around the world, so visiting becomes a way to connect with family and tradition,” she said. “People love to find varieties they haven’t tried before, and they love getting to share them with other fans back home.”

She said the brand had noticed that Libed’s collection “wasn’t quite complete,” so more cans are on the way to him. He has been doing “Spam of the Day” videos on TikTok showing off some of the flavors.

“I actually want to see how much I can carry on now,” he said. “Let’s go for, like, five cases.”

Kinscher warned in the email that cans in checked bags should have extra padding, while there are no problems bringing cans in a carry-on.

“But since that isn’t a typical item TSA sees during scanning, allow a little extra time in case you get some extra attention like Joel did,” she said.

Langston, at TSA, had a similar warning. He said that depending on the X-ray operator, your meat stash could be flagged for additional screening.

"If you’ve got a very large quantity of something, that could raise eyebrows,” he said.

NJ Health Department Alerts Residents of Travel-Associated Confirmed Measles Case, Urges Individuals To Stay Up to Date on Vaccines

TRENTON, NJ – The New Jersey Department of Health (NJDOH) is alerting residents about potential exposure associated with a confirmed, travel-associated case of measles. Individuals – especially parents, guardians, health care providers, and caregivers – are urged to be aware of the symptoms of this highly contagious virus and to stay up to date with the measles, mumps, and rubella (MMR) shots.

The confirmed case is a resident of Somerset County and developed measles following travel from a country that is currently experiencing an ongoing outbreak of measles.

Measles symptoms include a high fever, cough, runny nose, watery red eyes, and a rash that usually appears between three and five days after symptoms begin. The rash usually begins as flat red spots that appear on the face at the hairline and spread downward to the neck, torso, arms, legs, and feet. Measles can also cause serious complications, such as pneumonia and encephalitis (swelling of the brain), and can lead to miscarriage in pregnant people, premature birth, or a low-birth-weight baby.

Anyone who visited the following location at the specified date and times may have been exposed to the virus:

• Location: Emergency Department, Penn Medicine Princeton Medical Center 1 Plainsboro Road, Plainsboro Township, NJ 08536
• Date & Time: June 1, 2024 between 12:00 PM (noon) and 3:30 PM  

NJDOH recommends that anyone who visited the location listed above during the specified date and times should contact a health care provider immediately to discuss potential exposure and risk of developing the illness.

Potentially exposed individuals, if infected, could develop symptoms as late as June 26, 2024 . Contact tracing is underway. As of June 5, no additional associated cases have been identified.

The virus is easily spread through the air when someone coughs or sneezes and can remain in the air for up to two hours after an infected person leaves the area. People can also get sick when they come in contact with mucus or saliva from an infected person.

NJDOH is working in collaboration with local health officials and Penn Medicine to notify people who might have been exposed and to identify additional exposures that may have occurred. Those who may have been exposed or who suspect illness should call their health care provider first before arriving at any facility so that necessary infection prevention precautions can be taken to protect other patients and staff.

Individuals at risk include those who have not been fully vaccinated or have not had measles in the past.

NJDOH encourages all residents to stay up-to-date on routine vaccinations and especially recommends that New Jersey residents planning to travel , regardless of destination, are up to date on MMR shots .

MMR vaccine, administered in two doses, is safe and the most effective way to protect against measles, mumps, and rubella. The vaccine is also effective at preventing complications caused by these highly contagious diseases.

After six months of use, the bag is scuffed up with noticeable scratches.

Perfect for travelers on a budget, the Asenlin 40L Travel Backpack impressed us with its packing features and comfortable fit. We thought the bag provided excellent organization thanks to the interior and exterior compression that provided extra room for packing. The backpack comes with three different packing cubes in small, medium, and large. We also like that this backpack includes both a suitcase strap and a handle to hold it horizontally. The backpack itself also features straps inside and a laptop sleeve to easily hold down items and pack electronics.

The design didn’t blow us away like those from some of the more costly brands, but it does have a laptop sleeve and a water bottle holder. We also liked the flexibility of being able to wear the Asenlin as a backpack, hold it like a briefcase, or use the trolley sleeve to slide it onto a roller suitcase’s handle. However, a bigger adjustment range for the chest strap would have been ideal. During our durability tests, the backpack didn’t scuff or show signs of damage. The handle on the top of the bag wasn’t as comfortable to hold onto as we hoped. 

We love this backpack’s thoughtful features geared toward all types of travelers. The Tropicfeel Shell Backpack has the ability to store up to 42 liters worth of clothing for a weekend or week-long trip, but you can also use it as a 20-liter backpack for day trips, sightseeing, and everyday use. After regularly using the bag for six months, we found it to be incredibly sturdy and durable. We had no issues fitting our full packing list and found that there was plenty more room thanks to the variety of buckled straps that allow you to adjust the size of the bag. You can loosen the front buckle to allow the roll-up opening flap to expand to fit more items, and there is a kangaroo pouch at the bottom of the backpack that provides an additional six liters of space for shoes or other items you want to keep separate. There’s also a padded compartment in the back of the backpack that can fit laptops up to 17 inches long. We thought the backpack was comfortable to wear after adjusting the shoulder and waist straps, but we found that it might take some effort to get the buckles into your desired setting.

It’s a large bag, but it wasn’t so heavy that it was uncomfortable to wear.

For travelers journeying on foot, the Osprey Fairview wowed us with its spacious interior and comfortable fit. The straps for walking longer distances are really the best part — making your bag feel like you're carrying less since the weight is so well distributed. The bags have the same storage capacity and general style, but Osprey’s women’s backpacks are designed to fit a smaller torso with waist and chest harnesses that sit upward and outward for a more comfortable carry. In testing, the main compartment and mesh zippered pouch on the front flap proved to be spacious. There are two internal compression straps and one external strap that kept belongings secure through our rough handling, so we think the bag would provide sufficient protection if you do need to check it in for a flight. 

We appreciated the padded shoulder straps and back that made wearing the backpack comfortable, despite the weight of its contents. We found it was most comfortable to carry as a backpack when packed full.

Other Carry-on Backpacks We Liked

While we tested plenty of high-scoring carry-on backpacks, there were some that almost made our list but didn’t quite make the cut due to several weaknesses revealed during testing. 

Bellroy Transit Backpack Plus : We loved the adjustable sternum and waist straps that you can tuck into the bag when not in use, but we think there are better bags out there for a fraction of the price. 

AmazonBasics Carry-on Travel Backpack : It had plenty of compartments for staying organized and the material felt durable, but there weren’t any standout features that made it a must-have backpack. 

Vancropak Carry-on Backpack, Extra Large 40L : This backpack fits all of the packing items, and it even fits under an airplane seat, but our budget pick performed slightly better and it costs less. 

On more than seven separate occasions, we tested carry-on backpacks in our New York City lab to make sure we were creating this list with the best options from trusted luggage brands. For our latest tests, we built a specially designed airplane set that includes a row of real airplane seats and an overhead storage bin. To date, we've put over 89 carry-on backpacks through a series of trials that compared capacity, design, comfort, durability, and overall value. After completing our in-house testing, we sent the backpacks out with our Travel + Leisure editors to give us insight into how they fared during real-world travel. We have been updating this article with long-term testing insights as soon as they become available. 

To test for capacity, we began by packing the bags with three shirts, two pairs of pants, one jacket, one pair of shoes, and a toiletry bag. We noted if any space was left over as well as how functional the compartments were for organizing the contents packed. We evaluated the overall design of the bags by paying attention to how they fold out, how well the zippers and buckles work, and the functionality of each pocket or compartment. 

Next, we put on the backpacks and walked around for 10 minutes to rate comfortability. The highest scoring backpacks were exceptionally enjoyable to wear with the weight evenly distributed on the shoulders or hips.

Then, we threw the backpacks a few feet or off a countertop to test for durability. The highest-rated bags had no scuffs or tears after rough handling, and the packed items inside remained unharmed as well. 

Our testers had no previous knowledge of the cost of each backpack until after testing was completed. This allowed us to give an unbiased rating of overall values, where the top bags were determined to be fairly priced based on a high-quality performance, especially for the pricier bags. After our lab tests, the backpacks were sent out for real-world testing for up to six months.

Tips for Buying a Carry-on Backpack

Consider under-the-seat versus carry-on bags.

Not all carry-on backpacks will fit under the seat of an airplane, but if that’s your intended use, we recommend checking an airline’s underseat dimensions before heading to the airport. Similarly, with a carry-on backpack for the overhead bin, you’ll want to double-check the airline’s carry-on size restrictions to avoid paying unwanted fees if the bag is stuffed full of clothes. 

Keep in mind what the bag will be used for

For those traveling by foot, a smaller, lightweight backpack would be better for portability and comfort. For those traveling by air, a compression bag or backpack that has plentiful organization could be a better choice so you get the most out of the limited airline baggage space. WILMINGTON, Del. – U.S. District Judge Maryellen Noreika sent the jury home early on Friday afternoon at Hunter Biden's federal gun trial . The defense case, which featured testimony from Biden's eldest daughter, Naomi Biden, will resume Monday morning.

Noreika dismissed jurors during a lunch break. Her decision came after the prosecution rested following three-and-a-half days of testimony from 10 witnesses. Defense witnesses included Hunter Biden's eldest child, lawyer Naomi Biden , who testified her father appeared in good health around the time he bought the handgun at the center of the politically fraught prosecution.

Questioned by prosecutors, she said, “I knew he was struggling with addiction” after the death of his brother, Beau Biden. “After my uncle died, things got bad.”

Biden faces three felony charges  that he lied on a federal gun form that asked if he was addicted to drugs. His defense is expected to call two or three witnesses including James Biden, the president’s brother , who is expected to describe paying for his nephew’s stints in drug rehabilitation.

Hunter Biden will decide whether to testify after the other defense witnesses are finished, defense lawyer Abbe Lowell said. President Joe Biden has said he won't pardon his son if there is a guilty plea.

Judge ends trial early at lunch break. Defense resumes Monday

U.S. District Judge Maryellen Noreika ended proceedings in Hunter Biden's trial early Friday. She sent jurors home during the lunch break and said testimony would resume Monday.

Defense lawyer Abbe Lowell Lowell was still finalizing his list of witnesses, and was expected to file paperwork asking Noreika to dismiss the case.

On Monday, Lowell he could call a police officer who became involved in the investigation after Biden's sister-in-law, Hallie Biden, tossed .38-cal. revolver into a grocery store trash can 11 days after he purchased it. Lowell could also call James Biden, President Joe Biden's brother, to testify about paying for his nephew's drug rehabilitation program.

Prosecution implies Hunter Biden was furtive during NY visit to his daughter

Before she was dismissed from the witness stand on Friday, prosecutors walked Naomi Biden through text messages that seemed to indicate that Hunter Biden was avoiding his daughter.

“Did he tell you he was meeting with someone named Frankie? That he had Frankie come to his hotel room? That he gave him the access key to his Wells Fargo account?” prosecutor Leo Wise asked about an October 2018 visit to New York.

In another message from around the same time, she told her father: “I can’t take this. I miss you so much. I just want to hang out with you.”

Hunter Biden replied: “I am sorry I’ve been so unreachable. It is not fair to you.”

Under questioning from the defense, Naomi Biden told the jury there was no confusion about whether she had time to spend with her father in New York.

Prosecutors ask Naomi Biden about New York trip

Prosecutor Leo Wise asked Naomi Biden about texts she exchanged with her father Hunter Biden while they were in New York in October 2018, the month he bought a revolver at the center of his trial on gun charges.

Naomi Biden had said he was doing “great” during the trip for her move. But Wise asked if she knew what her father was doing when he asked to reclaim his truck from her in the middle of the night.

“Do you know what your father was doing at 2 a.m. and why he was asking for the car then?” Wise asked her.

She said she did not.

Who is Naomi Biden?

Naomi Biden , 30, is Hunter Biden’s eldest daughter with his first wife Kathleen Buhl. Like several other members of the country’s first family, she is a lawyer. She attended the University of Pennsylvania and Columbia Law School. 

The granddaughter of President Joe Biden, she lived in the White House with her then-fiancé Peter Neal for a few months before the pair got married on the South Lawn in November 2022. She remains based in Washington, D.C.

In November 2023, a Secret Service agent assigned to protect the president’s granddaughter opened fire after three people allegedly tried to break into a government vehicle parked in Georgetown near her home.

‘I knew he was struggling’: Naomi Biden on her father's addiction

Prosecutors asked Naomi Biden about her father Hunter Biden’s drug addiction but she said she never saw him using drugs.

“I knew he was struggling with addiction,” she said.

Asked when the struggle began, Naomi Biden cited the death of Hunter Biden’s brother, Beau, from brain cancer in 2015.

“After my uncle died, things got bad,” she said. 

‘He seemed hopeful’: Naomi Biden on her father Hunter Biden

Naomi Biden testified that when she saw her father, Hunter Biden, in mid-October 2018, days after he purchased the gun central to the trial, his manner seemed similar to when he'd been in a rehabilitation program months earlier.

She had driven her father’s truck to New York to move into a new apartment. And Hunter Biden had driven Joe Biden’s Cadillac to New York because he needed his truck back, she testified.

“He seemed great and he seemed hopeful,” she said.

Naomi Biden, who is the eldest of Hunter Biden’s three children, told the jury about visiting her father in California during the summer of 2018 when he was rehabilitation from using crack cocaine.

“He seemed like the clearest he had been since my uncle died,” Naomi Biden, a lawyer in Washington, D.C. said, referring to the late Beau Biden. “He seemed really great.”

Defense focuses on Hunter Biden's federal gun screening form

U.S. District Judge Maryellen Noreika refused to allow Hunter Biden’s defense to introduce a second version of the federal form he filled out to buy a gun in 2018, but defense lawyer Abbe Lowell continued to scrutinize details of the form in questioning a gun shop worker.

The initial form listed Biden’s passport to verify his identity. The second version sent to investigators later included his vehicle registration. Lowell claimed the form was “doctored” and in pretrial hearings sought to explore that at trial.

Gun shop worker Jason Turner testified that he wrote the vehicle registration into the form the day of the sale. “That form is wrong,” Turner said of the initial form.

Defense grills worker who sold gun to Hunter Biden

Defense lawyer Abbe Lowell asked gun store worker Jason Turner about how he approved the background check required to sell Hunter Biden a gun that is central to the charges in his federal trial.

Lowell asked Turner about the color of ink used and about how Biden verified his address.

Lowell has previously alleged the gun shop did not receive proper identification and annotated the form years later to indicate Hunter Biden presented vehicle registration documents as a supplemental identification.

On the stand, Turner said he wrote that on the form the day of the sale.

Hunter Biden's first witness is a gun shop employee

Jason Turner was an employee at the StarQuest Shooters & Survival Supply in Talleyville, Del., and was working the day Hunter Biden bought the .38 Special revolver at the center of the criminal trial in October 2018.

He said he ran background checks and made sales as part of his employment there.

Defense outlines expected witnesses from gun shop, grocery store

Before the court went into a short recess, defense lawyer Abbe Lowell told U.S. District Judge Maryellen Noreika he intended to call the owner and the manager of the store that sold Hunter Biden the gun at the heart of the federal gun charges against him.

Lowell also said he would call the manager of the grocery store where the gun was found after Biden’s sister-in-law, Hallie Biden , threw it in a trash can 11 days after he bought it. A police officer called to the store will also be a witness, Lowell said.

Lowell didn’t mention calling any of Hunter Biden’s relatives, despite earlier saying he expected to call James Biden, the president’s brother.

Hunter Biden’s defense asks judge to dismiss charges

Defense lawyer Abbe Lowell asked U.S. District Judge Maryellen Noreika to dismiss the gun charges against Hunter Biden after the prosecution rested its case, arguing Justice Department special counsel David Weiss’s team had failed to provide sufficient evidence.

Lowell also argued the charges were unconstitutional because of legislative changes in gun restrictions. But Noreika has already rejected that argument in pretrial motions.

A request to dismiss charges is common after the prosecution in a case rests. “We will take a look,” Noreika said.

Lowell noted what he described as her “skeptical” smile.

“It didn’t mean I was skeptical, it was kind of an interesting concept,” Noreika said, describing one of his arguments.

Prosecution rests gun case against Hunter Biden

Prosecutors rested their case Friday against Hunter Biden – on federal charges he lied about his drug use when buying a gun in 2018 – after three and a half days of testimony from 10 witnesses.

Biden’s defense team expected to call two or three witnesses, including James Biden, the president’s brother. After those witnesses testify, Hunter Biden will decide whether to testify, according to defense lawyer Abbe Lowell.

Defense questions DEA agent about drug mentions in Biden electronics

Defense lawyer Abbe Lowell questioned Joshua Romig, a Drug Enforcement Administration special agent who reviewed texts from Hunter Biden’s electronic devices, about references to drugs in messages and pictures.

Lowell noted the timing of texts mentioning drugs dating to months before Biden bought a gun in October 2018 or afterward. Lowell also asked how Romig knew a water pipe in one picture was used for cocaine, suggesting it could have also been used to smoke methamphetamine, heroin or even pipe tobacco.

But Romig said he felt it was used for crack cocaine because of burn marks on the pipe.

DEA agent testifies about drug videos, slang

A text message Hunter Biden sent in February 2019, which said “I think it may be fentan,” was another way of saying fentanyl, a drug that dealers sometimes mixed with other products, according to Joshua Romig, a Drug Enforcement Administration special agent.

Another message sent to Hunter Biden stated “I have a ball on me,” to which he replied that he felt he was being scammed. Romig said “ball” is slang for “eight ball,” or 3.5 ounces of crack cocaine.

Prosecutors played a video from Biden’s electronic devices showing white rocks on a scale, which Romig said appeared to be cocaine. Several pictures showed what Romig said appeared to be a crack pipe.

Joshua Romig, a special agent for the Drug Enforcement Administration, testified that pictures from April 2018 pulled from Hunter Biden’s electronic devices showed cocaine.

Prosecutors also read out corresponding text messages which Romig said show that he was “upset that the amount is a lot smaller than what he paid for.”

DEA expert expected to testify about ‘coded messages’ about drugs

Joshua Romig, a special agent for the Drug Enforcement Administration, was expected to testify in Hunter Biden’s trial on federal gun charges about “coded messages” referring to drugs pulled from Biden’s electronic devices.

Prosecutors have referred to several messages explicitly mentioning drugs, while others refer to “baby powder” and “chore boy.”

Romig, the assistant special agent in charge of DEA’s Philadelphia field office, outlined his 25-year career in law enforcement investigating narcotics.

Chemist found cocaine residue on Hunter Biden’s leather gun pouch

Forensic chemist Jason Brewer testified that he found cocaine in the residue on the leather pouch that held Hunter Biden’s gun.

Two spots on the pouch had a “minimal amount” of “off-white powder,” which Brewer pointed out in a picture prosecutors projected onto a screen in Biden’s trial on gun charges. Brewer explained the technical details of testing for drugs.

“Cocaine was identified within the residual white particles I sampled,” he told the jury.

Chemist expected to testify about residue on Hunter Biden’s leather gun pouch

Jason Brewer, a forensic chemist for the FBI, is the first witness Friday in Hunter Biden’s trial on federal gun charges, where he is expected to testify about the residue found on a leather pouch recovered with a revolver at the heart of the case.

Prosecutors contend the pouch provides evidence of Hunter Biden’s use of crack cocaine use around the time he purchased and owned the .38-caliber Colt revolver in October 2018.

But defense lawyer Abbe Lowell argued in opening statements that detectives don’t know whether it was his client or Hallie Biden who is responsible for the residue on the pouch.

Hallie Biden, the  widow of Beau Biden , testified about how her brother-in-law introduced her to drugs. She also walked the jury through a series of text messages in the days after Hunter Biden bought the gun on Oct. 12, 2018.

A text the next day said he was behind a baseball stadium in Wilmington “waiting on a dealer named Mookie.”

The next day, Hallie Biden texted him stating that she tried calling him “500 times in the past 24 hours.” He eventually responded: “I was sleeping on a car smoking crack on 4th Street and Rodney.”

Hunter Biden called Hallie Biden ‘stupid’ for trashing gun

Hallie Biden told the jury she found the gun in his car 11 days after he bought it. Rather than risk their kids finding it, she put the gun in a leather case and drove to a grocery store, where she threw it into a trash can.

“I realized it was a stupid idea now, but I was just panicking,” Hallie Biden said.

Hunter Biden confronted her when he discovered what she had done.

“It’s hard for me to believe anyone is that stupid,” Hunter Biden said in a text. “Do you want me dead?” he asked in a later text.

'I definitely remember finding that': retiree described Hunter Biden's gun

The 80-year-old retiree who found the gun at the heart of Hunter Biden’s federal trial – on charges he lied to buy and possess the weapon – had been rummaging through trash bins for two decades.

Edward Banner was scavenging for aluminum cans he could return for a nickel apiece when he found the revolver that Hallie Biden, Hunter Biden’s former girlfriend and the widow of his brother, tossed in the trash outside Janssen’s Market in Greenville.

After Biden reported the gun missing, then-Delaware State Police Lt. Millard Greer tracked down Banner rummaging through trash cans in the upscale area. Greer asked Banner if someone had tossed something they shouldn’t have.

"Yes, they did," Greer quoted Banner saying. "A .38 special."

On the witness stand, Banner said: "I definitely remember finding that."

What is Hunter Biden being charged with?

The president's son faces three firearms felonies. In October 2018,  Hunter Biden walked into a gun shop  north of Wilmington, Delaware, and purchased a revolver.

People who purchase firearms are required to fill out a standardized form that asks whether they are an unlawful user or are addicted to controlled substances, narcotics and other listed substances. Biden is accused of answering "no" to that question on the form.

But Biden has been open about his longtime struggles with crack cocaine addiction. He's written about it in his 2021 memoir, "Beautiful Things," and discussed it during a court hearing last year, stating he's been sober since 2019.

Biden faces a maximum sentence of 25 years in prison if convicted, although first-time and non-violent offenders are often given shorter terms.

Hunter Biden memoir regains popularity during trial

Hunter Biden’s searing 2021 memoir , “ Beautiful Things ,” was a New York Times bestseller years before an audio version of him reading the tale of drug abuse was played as evidence in federal trial on gun charges.

But the trial has rekindled interest in what mega-author Stephen King  called a “harrowing and compulsively readable memoir.

The book reached No. 4 on the New York Times’ list after its April 2021 list. The book jumped from 338,000 in Amazon rankings on Sunday to 12,900 on Monday, the trial’s first day, and 4,200 on Wednesday.

More than 28,000 copies of the book have been sold in the U.S. by May 25, according to industry tracker BookScan. More than 11,00 e-books were sold through February.
