Delightful wineries, sparkling rivers, and idyllic vistas aren’t the only reasons to visit the Hill Country! The best Texas Hill Country towns are as varied as they are interesting, featuring plenty of history, natural beauty, and fun things to do.

Whether it’s your first trip to the Hill Country or you’ve lived here all your life, these small towns in the Texas Hill Country are a delight to visit.

Beautiful Texas Hill Country Towns

Fredericksburg.

Without a doubt, Fredericksburg is the most famous Hill Country town in Texas!

Known for its German heritage, prominent location along Wine Road 290 (aka its many wineries), many festivals, and proximity to other Hill Country favorites like Luckenbach, Enchanted Rock , and Old Tunnel State Park , Fredericksburg is one of the absolute best TX Hill Country towns to visit.

While you’re there, be sure to indulge in a few wine tastings, enjoy shopping on Main Street, stay in a charming bed and breakfast , and have at least one gut-busting meal worth of German food!

Located just outside of San Antonio, Boerne is not only one of the best day trips from San Antonio , but one of the coolest towns in the Hill Country!

Known for (like Fredericksburg) its German heritage, wineries, and shopping (in this case, the idyllic Hill Country Mile), Boerne also boasts some of the coolest caves in Texas , including Cascade Caverns and Cave Without a Name.

Located right where the Blanco River meets Cypress Creek in the Texas Hill Country, Wimberley is one of the best Hill Country towns in Texas for those looking for a swim.

The nearby  Blue Hole  and  Jacob’s Well both draw in plenty of visitors hoping to beat the Texas heat, but if you visit, be sure to also for exploring Wimberley’s wonderful art and music scenes, including the many whimsical painted boot sculptures you’ll find around town.

Drive Highway 71 from Austin to Llano (or nearby Burnet ) in April, and you just may find some of the most beautiful bluebonnet patches in Texas!

The bluebonnets aren’t the only reason to visit, though.

Llano is packed with unexpected things to do, including spotting the bald eagles that nest nearby, strolling across the walkable Roy B. Inks Bridge that crosses the Llano River, and visiting Shakedown Street, an alley-slash-music-venue decorated with Grateful Dead-themed murals.

Enchanted Rock State Natural Area and Inks Lake State Park are also both accessible from lovely Llano.

With a population of literally 3 people, Luckenbach, Texas, is more of a music venue than a town these days–but despite its minuscule size, it’s well worth a visit!

Luckenbach’s historic post office is now a gift shop, but it remains one of the most popular photo spots in Texas.

And, whether you stop by on a random Tuesday afternoon or on a Friday night, you’re bound to enjoy some live music while relaxing under the shade of live oaks while you’re there.

Dripping Springs

Home to the famous Hamilton Pool Preserve, plenty of wineries and distilleries, and some of Texas’ loveliest Hill Country wedding venues, Dripping Springs nicknamed itself the “Gateway to the Hill Country” for good reason!

While exploring Dripping Springs, be sure to check out Tillies, a beautiful restaurant housed in a former Vietnamese courthouse that was imported to Texas, charming Mercer Street with its boutiques and restaurants, the Dr. Pound Farmstead, and–my personal favorite–Texas Hill Country Olive Oil Co., where you can pick up local Texas olive oil (it’s delicious and we keep some on hand in our pantry at all times).

As the Lavender Capital of Texas, Blanco is known for its beautiful lavender farms and the corresponding festival that happens each summer–but that’s not the only reason to plan a visit to Blanco!

Other attractions include going for a swim at Blanco State Park and chowing down at Old 300 BBQ (I love the Sam Houston sandwich, personally).

Johnson City

A winery housed in a castle, one of the most beautiful displays of Christmas lights in Texas, and the Johnson Settlement (complete with a few longhorns) where President Johnson’s grandparents originally settled in Texas are just a few of the delightful things that you’ll find in Johnson City!

Johnson City is one of my personal favorite Hill Country towns: its downtown is small but fairly walkable, its courthouse square charming, the antiquing plentiful, and its location–along Highway 290 and not far from Pedernales Falls State Park–sublime.

Technically, Gruene isn’t a Texas Hill Country town in its own right, but rather a historic district in the city of New Braunfels .

However, that wasn’t always the case, and to this day, visitors come from all over Texas to enjoy Gruene!

Known for being home to Gruene Hall, the oldest continually operating dance hall in Texas, Gruene is a Hill Country favorite with locals and visitors alike.

This small town is both shady and walkable (both enormous wins in Central Texas), and packed with shops, restaurants (Gristmill, which is housed in an old cotton gin overlooking the river, is among the best), and access to tubing on the Guadalupe River.

As the Barbecue Capital of Texas, there’s one rule for visiting Lockhart: arrive very hungry.

From the moment you arrive in town, Black’s Barbecue, Kreuz Market, Smitty’s Market, and Chisholm Trail BBQ are ready to compete for your attention!

If you can swing it, the perfect day trip to Lockhart includes two Texas barbecue stops (easier said than done–ask me how I know) and a stroll around downtown.

In addition to its barbecue fame, Lockhart is also known for having one of the most beautiful historic courthouses in Texas!

Marble Falls

Located on the banks of Lake Marble Falls (which aren’t set on marble at all, but that classic Texas staple of limestone), Marble Falls is a charming Hill Country town perfect for both outdoor enthusiasts and those hoping to hit up the small-but-lovely downtown.

If you’re visiting during bluebonnet season , don’t miss the Bluebonnet House along 281, an abandoned farmhouse in town that boasts a beautiful field of bluebonnets in front of it in the spring.

Also, regardless of the time of year, don’t leave town without trying a slice of pie from the Blue Bonnet Cafe, which serves up some of the best pie in Texas!

The tiny, unincorporated community of Driftwood may be dispersed (you won’t find a charming town center here), but it’s still among the best small towns in the Hill Country to visit!

Home to famous Salt Lick BBQ, its share of wineries, a picturesque, historic Texaco station that makes a fantastic Hill Country photo op, and more, Driftwood is a delight to explore.

It’s also sandwiched between Austin and Dripping Springs, making Driftwood very convenient to visit.

The self-proclaimed Cowboy Capital of the World is definitely worth checking out when exploring Central Texas!

Thirty years back at our home in Dripping Springs.. Ready?…. One day decades ago, I was talking with Great Aunt Grace, who looked me in the eye saying, Cliff we always stopped in Dripping Springs as they had the best water and stay the night if we ran or just late in get supplies in Austin and wanted to be back at the ranch house or it was rain near. < they were in a two horse trailer back then on the "Dirt Hwy". This story, the interesting and funny is… this was back in the Nineteen Twenties~!

Some of the most scenic spots to search for bluebonnets include Marble Falls , Llano, and Burnet.

Muleshoe Bend , located near Spicewood Springs, is also a great place to visit to admire the natural beauty of the never ending flower fields.

Tour the Texas State Capitol

Austin is the center of the Texas Hill Country and the ideal destination to explore the surrounding area.

The city is the capital of the Lone Star State and home to many attractions including the Texas State Capitol, University of Texas campus, historic districts, and museums.

The Texas State Capitol building, made from pink granite rock, mined right here in the Hill Country is a must visit attraction.

Austin’s music scene is one of the best in the state.

The Texas Hill Country offers a variety of hiking destinations for outdoor lovers: one of our favorites is Enchanted Rock!

Enchanted Rock is a pink granite dome that towers over the surrounding countryside.

Enchanted Rock also offers ample opportunity for rock climbing and bouldering.

This is one of the best Texas parks to visit during spring for its amazing wildflower blooms.

In mid-May, you will find it bursting with flowering cacti.

Visit the Alamo in San Antonio

While some don’t consider San Antonio to be Hill Country, you really cannot visit Texas without seeing the Alamo in San Antonio.

And that’s why we recommend driving south from Austin and taking a tour of the Alamo.

The Spanish Mission is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and the site of the famous Battle of Alamo.

While you are in the city, do not forget to visit the famous and charming San Antonio Riverwalk.

Take a wine tour in the Texas Hill Country

The Hill Country is known for its wineries and vineyards.

Cities like Fredericksburg are located smack dab in the middle of the region’s best wineries.

Johnson City also makes an excellent base for exploring the nearby wineries.

Some of the famous wineries in Central Texas include Fall Creek vineyards, Signor Vineyards, and Becker Vineyards.

Outside downtown Brenham, you will find Texas’s famous Blue Bell Creamery.

You can also sample $1 scoops of the ice cream and wear a vintage style Blue Bell paper hat.

The historic town of Luckenbach has a population of 3!

Jump into the Devil’s Waterhole

Devil’s Waterhole, located in Inks Lake State Park, in Burnet is a gorgeous swimming hole that is incredibly popular during the summer.

The area features steep limestone cliffs that plunge into the water.

Climbing the surrounding rocks and jumping into the swimming hole is one of the most fun things to do in Central Texas in the summer.

The scenic River Road from New Braunfels to Canyon Lake is one of the best drives in the region.

Along the route, you can see amazing scenery, panoramic views, and wildlife.

See dinosaur footprints at the Heritage Museum

Did you know that you could see dinosaur footprints right here in the Texas Hill Country?

The Heritage Museum of the Texas Hill Country in Canyon Lake is home to several well preserved dinosaur tracks.

On a visit, kids can see the tracks, understand how they were made, identify the dinosaurs that made them, and dig their own fossils.

Hike to Gorman Falls

Inside Colorado Bend State Park, you will find the Lone Star State’s tallest waterfall – Gorman Falls.

This 70 foot tall waterfall flows into a lush green canyon and is definitely worth a visit.

The 3 mile hike is moderately difficult and takes about 3 hours.

It is definitely one of our favorite hiking trails in Central Texas .

Dance under the stars at Garner State Park

Garner State Park, located near Concan, is an excellent place to enjoy a romantic evening under the stars.

Every summer, the park presents free outdoor concerts such as classic country music and gospel hymns accompanied by popular regional bands.

During the day, you can float the refreshing waters of the Frio River, enjoy breathtaking views during fall months, go fishing, bird watching, and hiking.

The park’s landscape of bald cypress trees, limestone bluffs, and the calm waters is equally appealing for all types of travelers.

See the hidden waterfall on Lake Buchanan

And now it’s time to reveal Texas’s best kept secret, the Falls Creek Waterfall!

The waterfall is located about 20 miles north of Lake Buchanan Dam and empties directly into the Colorado River.

It is located on private land, so the only way to see this spectacular waterfall is from the water.

You can either rent boats or take the Vanishing Texas River Cruise on Lake Buchanan to see the waterfall.

Spend Christmas in the Texas Hill Country

As the weather cools down, you can spend a fun family holiday in the picturesque towns of Fredericksburg and New Braunfels.

Both towns celebrate Christmas with lots of special events such as parades, candle light tours, Victorian carolers, and visits from Santa Claus.

Belly Up to the BBQ

Barbecue is a religion in Texas, and one of its high altars,  Cooper's Old Time Pit Bar-B-Que , lures folks off the well-worn tourist trail in Llano, deep in granite country. Stop first at Cooper's porch, where pool table-size smokers scent the air with mesquite. Select a cut of meat—brisket, sausage, ribs, cabrito—and head inside for the sides (potato salad, coleslaw, and much more). This restaurant is a must-stop for all you barbecue lovers.

Take the Scenic Farm Roads

Roads usually serve a practical purpose—getting people from point A to point B. But in the Hill Country, you might suspect a road was paved purely for pleasure—to take drivers past stirring vistas, expansive pastures, and dense spreads of bluebonnets. In the spring, wildflowers dot nearly every corner of the landscape but find particularly vibrant ones on Farm Road 1323, which heads west off U.S. 281 about three miles north of Johnson City.

For even more dramatic driving, head to where the hills get larger and take on shapes like traffic cones and gumdrops. The incomparable Farm Road 337 in the southern part of the Hill Country, west of San Antonio, winds from Medina through Vanderpool to Leakey, skirting rock ledges where oaks and cacti barely cling to solid ground.

Take a Spin at Two-Stepping

Texas Hill Country is known for having historic dance halls that still host live music and dancing weekly.  Gruene Hall , built in 1878, is Texas' oldest continually operating dance hall. On the weekends, you'll find couples spinning around on the dance floor. Other beloved Hill Country dance halls include the  Twin Sisters Dance Hall  in Blanco ,  Mercer Dancehall  in Driftwood, and  John T. Floore's Country Store  in Helotes.

Try a Unique Stay

Thanks to its breathtaking scenery and close proximity to so many different towns and must-see spots, Texas Hill Country has become quite the destination for glamping and other unique stays that make for a totally new type of getaway. In Utopia, find a bed-and-breakfast of luxury treehouses conveniently located between two state parks, Garner State Park and Lost Maples State Natural Area. Go for a Swim

You have plenty of choices if you want to swim in the Hill Country—from the more widely known Blue Hole in Wimberley to Hamilton Pool, a massive crater created when the dome over an underground river caved in. But the lushest and least crowded swimming spot is at  Krause Springs  in Spicewood. The privately-owned, 115-acre park features 32 springs, several burbling through an artificial pool, then tumbling over a fern-lined cliff into a deep hole. The brave can fly into the water on a rope swing.

Enjoy the Live Music

Music is a massive part of the Hill Country culture that one whole town,  Luckenbach , is dedicated to it. Made famous by Waylon Jennings' song of the same name, it's been a favorite venue of country stars Willie Nelson, Lyle Lovett, and more. If you want a more low-key, under-the-radar setting, head over to  Alamo Springs Café , which is, as the owners say, "inconveniently located in the middle of nowhere." Dig into hand-battered onion rings and juicy burgers with toppings like jalapeño chiles and grilled onions. On weekends, local bands play on the outdoor stage. In Austin, don't miss a night at the historic, almost-always-open Continental Club .

Kayak or Tube on a Texas River

Winding through tunnels of towering bald cypress trees on its way to Bandera, the Medina River doesn't get the crowds that flock to the Guadalupe River. So you have most of it to yourself as you spend a couple of hours of bliss in a kayak rented from the  Medina River Company . New Braunfels is also one of the best places in the state to embark on a tube, as it’s home to both the Comal and Guadalupe rivers. The Comal River offers a shorter float and calmer waters, while the Guadalupe River offers a longer float. Feel free to bring your own tube and access the rivers via river parks, or use an outfitter like  Rockin’ R River Rides .

Be a Stargazer

Do you know what the song says about the stars being big and bright deep in the heart of Texas? See them for yourself at  Tres Lunas Resort , a 112-acre spread on a ridge with little distracting artificial light, in Mason. But the night sky is just one reason to visit. Smell the Lavender Fields

When you get to Blanco, about an hour's drive southwest of Austin, roll down the windows and take a deep breath. Perfume scents the air starting in mid-May when flowers begin to bloom at nearly a dozen farms covering the Lavender Capital of Texas, some open to visitors at the start of the blooming season. Blanco celebrates their lavender harvest with the  Blanco Lavender Festival , a weekend-long celebration with a lavender market, free admission to a lavender farm, live music, and lots of good food.

See the State's Italian Side

In Driftwood, you'll find an Italian-style winery and restaurant tucked away off a country road.  Duchman Family Winery  uses 100 percent Texas grapes and offers tastings every Friday through Sunday. A short walk next door,  Trattoria Lisina  offers impeccable Italian cuisine (get the lasagna) and even fresh-made gelato to cap off your meal.

Bask in Texas Bluebonnets

Bluebonnets  generally begin blooming in February and continue into April, joined by other later blooming varieties of native flowers.  Southern Living  photographer Van Chaplin traveled over 600 miles through the Hill Country photographing flowers. He advises to find the most beautiful blooms, "Drop in at small-town cafes and ask locals. They know the country better than anyone else." Odds are, on a drive in the heart of Hill Country, all you have to do is look on the side of the road.

Dig for Topaz

You must go to the mall to buy jewels in Dallas, Houston, and other big cities. In the Hill Country, you find them lying on the ground. Topaz, the state gem of Texas, is found only in Mason County, about an hour's drive from Fredericksburg. Find clear or blue-tinted stones typically near the surface around granite outcroppings in creek beds and ditches. Hunt all you want at  The Historic Lindsay Ranch .

Hike to Gorman Falls

One of Texas's most scenic wildflower drives takes you along State 16 through Llano and Ranch Road 501 to  Colorado Bend State Park . Reaching Gorman Falls, the park's main attraction, takes a one-and-a-half-mile hike through rugged ranch country. The last 100 yards is a rocky descent down a steep path to the misty chill of half a dozen cascades that spill from a 60-foot-high limestone cliff into a moss- and fern-draped grotto. The breathtaking view of the waterfall and the peaceful sound of the rushing waters make the trek well worth every step.

Drive Scenic Highway 16

It twists so much you have to slow down to a crawl in a few places, but this sidewinder of a highway that climbs through the Hill Country for 30 miles between Kerrville and Medina is one of the most scenic in Texas. Ancient live oaks and white-flowering yucca plants decorate the roadsides, and green grasses cling to limestone outcrops.

Grab a Texas-Sized Slice

Orchards spread out from the highway row after row of the miniature varieties that grow in Medina, also known as the Apple Capital of Texas. Apple pie is an art form here, and there's none better than the fresh-baked desserts loaded with "Golden Delicious" apple types at  Love Creek Apple Store , courtesy orchard owners Baxter and Carol Adams moved from Houston to Medina in 1980. If you find yourself in Round Top, make sure to visit Royers Round Top Café , where it's been said Texas Trash Pie was invented.

Explore Enchanted Rock

Round as a giant Easter egg,  Enchanted Rock  sits half-buried in the hills near Fredericksburg. It's the nation's second-largest granite dome, next to Georgia's Stone Mountain. It's a half-mile hike to the top. For an unforgettable experience, make the trek at the end of the day about a half hour before sunset. You will remember the view and the sound because this rock talks. That's what the Tonkawa and other Native American tribes who rever it believe about the Enchanted Rock. Scientists contend it is fissured in the granite, expanding at the end of a hot day, but you should visit to hear it for yourself and decide what you believe.

Attend an Olive Oil Tasting in Dripping Springs

Texas Hill Country is very suitable for growing olives to make olive oil, and you can find a tour, tasting room, and boutique at  Texas Hill Country Olive Co.  in Dripping Springs. Book a tour and tasting, and eat lunch at the on-site bistro. You'll want to pick up a few bottles of their award-winning olive oils and balsamic vinegar to take home.

One of the most appealing parts of giant Texas , the Hill Country offers travelers a break from life’s daily grind with loads of wineries, rivers for floating, endless trails to hike and live music around every corner. 

Sprawling across 31,000 sq miles (80,290 sq km) of gently rolling hills, the region abounds with small towns and wide-open spaces meant for exploring. As you head west from Austin , the state capital that’s an increasingly world-class metropolis, you’ll arrive at charming towns such as Marble Falls, Blanco, Wimberley, Fredericksburg, Dripping Springs, Johnson City and more. These towns have small populations, sure – but they’re large on Texas spirit.

And Texas spirits , as well: distilleries and wineries dot the roads here. You’ll also find a lively art scene; restaurants both casual and refined; and cool swimming holes, miles of nature trails and dazzling night skies you won’t find in the big city.

When you venture to the Hill Country, you’ll discover why it’s so popular with Texans and outsiders alike. 

When should I go to the Texas Hill Country?

March through May are great months to visit, as colorful wildflowers – including Texas’ state flower, the bluebonnet – come into bloom throughout the rolling hills. This is also when you can sample Hill Country wines in the area on the Wine and Wildflower Journey . The weather in spring is mild, with average temperatures around 60–85°F (15.5–29°C).  

In June through August, the height of summer, temperatures can reach into the triple digits Fahrenheit. Even amid the sweltering weather, this is the Hill Country’s high season, as visitors arrive to enjoy the region’s rivers and lakes for floating, paddling and swimming. Fall is a great time to visit as well, as the summer crowds retreat and pleasant temperatures prevail.

In the winter, the weather is generally mild enough to spend time outdoors golfing, hiking and touring wineries. Yet winter also does bring the occasional freeze, along with ice and snow. Toward the end of the year, small towns across the Hill Country twinkle with Christmas lights as they celebrate the holidays. 

How long should I spend in the Texas Hill Country?

Most people tackle the Hill Country on a three-day jaunt, wandering from town to town for wildflower views, winery visits and outdoor pursuits. I suggest three or four days – perhaps a long weekend – to experience it all. 

If you only have three days, spend some time exploring the town of Fredericksburg and the surrounding area. Start with a stroll through downtown, shopping on Main St and in the Warehouse District for home decor, clothing, furniture, pottery and souvenirs. Grab dinner at Vaudeville , where elevated options include Akaushi beef with Parmesan polenta, and yellowfin tuna with a ginger broth.

Saturday, fuel up for the day with a German breakfast (Texas has lots of German heritage) at Old German Bakery & Restaurant before heading out to area wineries. Beautiful Signor Vineyards has a wine barn, patio, sprawling lawn and market, while Pontotoc Vineyard Weingarten , which occupies an adorable cottage on Main St, is a must-see. Rest up at Inn on Barons Creek , where shuttle rides for the 290 Wine Trail commence, before heading home on Sunday. 

If you can add a couple more days onto your trip, consider exploring other Hill Country towns such as Johnson City, Blanco, Marble Falls, Dripping Springs, Kerrville or Boerne, which together offer plenty of downtown squares, country hikes and cool waters to enjoy. 

Is it easy to get in and around the Texas Hill Country?

It’s easy to access the Hill Country from the international airports in Austin or San Antonio . Once you arrive, renting a car is your best bet for exploring a region without great public-transport options. If you don’t want to drive yourself, you can use rideshare companies to get you to and around the Hill Country, though you’ll pay a premium for this. 

For those looking to visit area wineries, the 290 Wine Shuttle is a safe and reliable option. On Saturdays, the shuttle picks up and drops off at 19 wineries and distilleries every 15 minutes from 10am to 6pm; hop on and off as you wish throughout the day. Friday and Sunday shuttles are available as well, though these days include stops at “only” 12 wineries. 

Top things to do in the Texas Hill Country

Be surprised by texas wine .

A warm climate almost all year long – similar to those in northern Spain and southern France – means great conditions for growing grapes. Indeed, Texas wine production has ramped up tremendously within the past 20 years – and Texas is today the third largest American Viticultural Area (AVA) in the country. Winemakers are working to refine their craft with each crop, growing tempranillo, sangiovese, viognier, syrah, roussanne and other varietals that have taken well to the soil here.

Vineyards and wineries throughout the Hill Country welcome visitors for tastings, private events and lazy weekend sipping. Wedding Oak Winery in San Saba offers 100% Texas-grown wines on its patio and terrace, as does Duchman Family Winery  in Driftwood, together with charcuterie boards, pizzas and light bites. In Hye, Ron Yates Wines offers Spanish-, Italian- and Rhône-style wines at a tasting pavilion that’s open seven days a week. Slate Theory Winery in Fredericksburg has an awesome underground cellar for tastings (reservations required), plus a tasting room open to the public. In Stonewall, Pedernales Cellars has a beautiful deck with Hill Country views, and in Johnson City, Lewis Wines sits on 100 acres and offers tastings, tours and fun events. 

The website Texas Hill Country Wineries has loads of information, including a winery map and event happenings. While planning, be sure to make reservations for wineries that require them, and be sure to bring snacks, as not all stops have food. The 290 Wine Shuttle will get you to and from many wineries in the area.

Immerse yourself in nature 

The Hill Country is full of places to unplug and unwind. Refreshing rivers weave throughout the region. Natural pools and springs dot the terrain. And numerous state parks offer camping, horseback riding, hiking and stargazing, including Pedernales Falls State Park , Inks Lake State Park and Longhorn Cavern State Park , which also has caves for exploring.

In Garner State Park , access the Frio River for floating, or check out the Guadalupe, Comal or San Marcos Rivers for additional float spots. Hamilton Pool is a natural swimming hole surrounded by a canyon and waterfall (reservations required), while the Blue Hole in Wimberley is a gorgeous natural swimming area fed by the blue-hued Cypress Creek (reservations required to swim). The privately owned Krause Springs has swimming areas, campsites and a butterfly garden that are all open to the public. Perfect for families, the Cibolo Center for Conservation has children’s activities, family night hikes and birding workshops. During spring, stop by Wildseed Farms , a 200-acre working wildflower farm that bursts with colors, and which also has a vineyard, beer garden, walking trail and more. 

Go on a barbecue adventure 

Between outdoor pursuits and wine adventures, you’ll work up quite an appetite. Happily, Lockhart is the “official barbecue capital” of this grilling-mad state. Stop by Kreuz Market , Smitty’s Market or Black’s Barbecue for mouthwatering brisket, ribs, sausage and all the sides (think potato salad, coleslaw and pinto beans) you can handle.

Lots of barbecue joints are upping their game these days to cater to the craft-barbecue crowd, which means you can expect elevated side dishes, creative cocktails and global flavors infusing Texas classics. Eaker Barbecue in Fredericksburg serves gochujang pork ribs and kimchi fried rice, along with traditional barbecue offerings. Brotherton’s Black Iron Barbecue in Pflugerville cranks out brisket boudin links and Texas banh mi sandwiches made with its spectacular brisket, while Louie Mueller Barbecue in Taylor delivers with dino beef ribs among other tasty classics. In San Marcos, Hays Co Bar-B-Que pairs pork belly, brisket, pork chops, sausage and other meats with sides like Hatch-green-chile mac ‘n’ cheese and jalapeño creamed corn.  

My favorite things to do in the Texas Hill Country? A little of everything

I love starting the morning off with a hike uphill at Enchanted Rock State Park : admiring views of the Hill Country landscape from the pink granite dome, and all the wildflowers and cactus along the way. For lunch, I love a massive juicy burger with onion rings and a frozen margarita at Alamo Springs Cafe , in between Fredericksburg and Comfort. I might stop in at a couple of the wineries along nearby Hwy 290 – and never miss a stop at Luckenbach , where there’s live music almost every day.

For overnight stays, I love Camp Lucy in Dripping Springs, which has colorful decor, modern amenities, a relaxed atmosphere and a fabulous on-site New American restaurant, Tillie’s . For a health-focused stay with a heavy dose of zen, I like Lake Austin Spa Resort , which has soothing rooms and a full calendar of activities, with everything from hydrobiking, kickboxing and tai chi to cocktail classes. 

How much money do I need for a trip in the Texas Hill Country?

A trip to the Texas Hill Country can range from affordable to expensive, depending on where you stay; spending on meals and shopping; and how far and wide you plan to drive. There are lots of inns, hotels, bed-and-breakfasts and vacation rentals in the area, ranging from budget prices around $60 a night to upward of $500 a night. Plan on spending around $50 to $150 per person, per day for meals.

7 Most Scenic Places In Texas Hill Country

Unlike parts of Texas that are flat and opaque, Texas Hill Country is flush with color — green grass, multi-colored wildflowers that are so vivid and dense you want to squint, red rocks, barns and buildings with peeling paint — and topography such as lakes and streams, rolling hills, caves, and vineyards. And don’t forget the wildlife. So much of the area is photo-worthy, so grab your camera and take the back roads to discover Texas Hill Country.

While visiting Fredericksburg on a press trip, I was invited to take a driving photography tour of Texas Hill Country. We drove to scenic destinations such as Enchanted Rock and Sauer-Beckmann Living History Farm but also took the back roads to discover prickly pear cactus growing in clusters by the side of the road, sheep grazing near a stream, and plenty of colorful wildflowers at Wildseed Farms, but also in ditches and blanketed lawns. Go in the spring for a spectacular show of bluebonnet, Mexican hat, poppy, Indian blanket, and so much more.

Here, in no particular order, are seven of the most scenic places in Texas Hill Country.

1. Enchanted Rock, Fredericksburg

You’ll find rock formations, scenery, wildlife, and the massive pink granite dome that is Enchanted Rock to photograph at Enchanted Rock State Natural Area . Depending on your skill level, choose from several trails at the park for a hike.

Search for wildflowers with an early morning hike at Enchanted Rock. Spot wildflowers on the Loop Trail, a 6.3-mile, mostly flat trail that follows the perimeter of the park. For an easy hike, the Interpretive Loop is a short trail where you can see special plants and animals that live near the base of Little Rock. Or for a strenuous hike, take the Summit Trail to the top of Enchanted Rock for great views.

Pro Tip: Consider lighting when planning your tour. Dawn and dusk offer the best hours for rich colors.

2. Sauer-Beckmann Living History Farm, Stonewall

At the Sauer-Beckmann Living History Farm , park rangers in period clothing perform daily chores such as preserving meat, baking bread, churning butter, and more. You see farm animals — if you visit in the spring there may be baby sheep, pigs, or cows around that time of year too — plus barns, the original home, a smokehouse, a tankhouse, and various tools used to make soap, cook, and tend the animals. You may even see the blacksmith in the blacksmith shop. These busy workers are eager to talk about the farm and answer questions about what it was like in the late 1800s.

There are many photo opportunities, whether it’s the livestock, the buildings and tools, or an action shot of one of the rangers performing daily chores. Tours are free but they do accept donations.

While you’re nearby, visit the Lyndon B. Johnson National Historical Park to tour the LBJ Ranch and visit the Texas White House.

Pro Tip: With moving animals, take lots of photos. I will take dozens of photos of a moving animal and later find at least one or two gems that capture the scene.

3. Wildseed Farms, Fredericksburg

Head to Wildseed Farms to see over 200 acres of wildflowers. Fields of poppies and bluebonnets meet the street (22 acres worth). Once inside Wildseed Farms, walk the half-mile of trails in the display gardens. The path is lined with benches to take a break and sit with wildflowers, butterflies, and hummingbirds all around. The trail is wheelchair accessible.

It’s also a great spot to grab lunch and some delicious peach ice cream. It’s an enormous garden center where you can purchase plants or seeds from their immense stock of wildflower seeds, or find the perfect planter, container, or gardening supplies to take home with you.

Pro Tip: Use negative space when you can. A solo flower growing in the crack of a rock is a powerful image. If it’s a busy background, fill the entire frame with a single flower or soften the background with a blur setting.

4. Gorman Falls, Bend

Bring fishing gear and camping supplies if you’d like to spend some time at Colorado Bend State Park . There’s plenty to photograph and you may want to spend extra time to see it all. This wilderness area of Colorado Bend has caves to explore, Gorman Falls, 35 miles of hiking and biking trails, Spicewood Springs for swimming, and the river for kayaking and fishing.

For camping, depending on how rugged you’d like to get, choose from drive-up campsites or walk- or hike-in sites.

You can tour the caves on your own or go with an experienced guide. To view and photograph the 70-foot spring-fed waterfall, it’s a 3-mile round trip hike with rocky terrain.

If you plan to explore numerous Texas parks, consider purchasing a Texas Parks Pass that allows you unlimited free entry to 89 state parks for you and your guests. A Senior Partial is available for Texas residents over age 65. With this pass, guests pay 50 percent off the entry fee. A Senior Full pass is for anyone born before September 1, 1930, and allows you to enter any Texas state park for free. One additional person may assist you at 50 percent of the entry fee.

5. Wine Road 290, Fredericksburg

Texas Hill Country is notorious for its winemaking. Stop at numerous downtown wineries , then take Wine Road 290 to visit many of the wineries and vineyards.

Some, such as Pedernales Cellars , provide views from the tasting room that overlook the Hill Country where you can spot wildflowers or just gaze at the vineyards while sipping your favorite vintage. The vineyard sits on 145 acres with spectacular views of the Pedernales River Valley. Pedernales Cellars has provided sustainably-produced Texas grapes since 1995 to create Texas-grown Spanish- and Rhone-style wines.

The sunshine is brilliant and perfect for taking photos on the patio at Narrow Path Winery . Because what’s more Instagram-worthy than a glass of wine shot outdoors in the sunshine? This family-owned and operated vineyard winery has been in business since the early 2000s.

You’ll find unique photo opportunities at Grape Creek Vineyards on their gorgeous estate. Walk outdoors and take photos of the interesting combinations of art and nature blending terrace fountains with the scenic view, the vineyards, and the landscaped patios. Visit the Tuscan-inspired tasting rooms, enjoy a wine tasting, or take a guided tour with barrel samples from their selection of 90+ point wines. There’s a restaurant on site where you can relax after a long day of shooting photos.

Pro Tip: Bring a tripod to keep the camera steady when shooting at long distances.

6. Cascade Caverns, Boerne

Go underground for amazing photos at Cascade Caverns . Beneath Texas Hill Country waits corridors of natural beauty to discover on a one-hour tour. During summer months you can book a more in-depth 3- to 4- hour group spelunking tour of the lower cave system. Keep in mind that participants must be physically fit, non-claustrophobic, and able to swim.

Also on site are a gift and rock shop, nature trails, and RV and camping options.

Pro Tip: For taking photos in the caverns, use a flash or bring an off-camera flash. A headlamp will come in handy for helping you see while you’re setting up your camera.

7. Gillespie County Country Schools

When German immigrants arrived in Gillespie County, they brought with them a love of education — leading to the first school being built in the center of Main Street in 1847. The original Rheingold School is the oldest of the rural schools in Gillespie County.

Enchanted Rock State Natural Area

Enchanted Rock State Natural Area is located 17 miles from Fredericksburg. Here you’ll encounter the massive pink granite dome that rises above central Texas. It reminds me of Pidurangula Rock in Sri Lanka.

The best way to enjoy this beautiful place is by starting your day with a hike to the top, where you will be able to enjoy a spectacular sunrise and panoramic views of the area. You can also go rock climbing, or gaze at the stars in one of Texas’ official dark sky parks.

Hamilton Pool Preserve

Located a few miles from Dripping Springs, Hamilton Pool Preserve is a natural paradise, where a 15 metre waterfall cascades into a stunning emerald pool. Note that swimming is occasionally restricted, so check the status before your visit.

The scenery here is iconic, with lush plant life encircling the tranquil waters – a great place for a serene hike or a leisurely picnic.

Pedernales Falls State Park

A landscape of limestone slabs and tranquil pools that have been fiercely carved by the Pedernales River over the ages, creating one of the most beautiful state parks in central Texas.

For a glimpse of what life on the Texas frontier was in the old days, visit the Frontier Times Museum.

Wimberley is a charming enclave in the Texas Hill Country where natural beauty and arts converge. Nestled among trickling creeks and green landscapes, this quaint town offers a peaceful retreat with a great range of activities.

Take a dip in the crystal-clear Blue Hole, or marvel at the natural wonder of Jacob’s Well, an artesian spring with deep, clear waters that invites you to swim in the summer months.

The Lavender Festival in May is particularly enchanting with rows of purple blooms.

Grape Creek Vineyards

Experience the ‘Tuscany in Texas’ at Grape Creek Vineyards. Indulge in a glass of their premium wines as you relax on a patio overlooking the vineyards.

Driftwood Estate Winery

Born out of a passion discovered by accident after a trip to France, Fall Creek was the first winery to open in Texas back in 1975. Most of the wine they produce is sold and consumed in Texas.

Willow City Loop

The Willow City Loop is a picturesque 13-mile scenic drive that winds through rolling hills, rugged landscapes, and blooming wildflowers. It is especially vibrant in the spring. 

Historically a route for cattle drives, this loop offers a peaceful escape into nature, with stunning views that photographers and nature lovers dream of. Pull over at designated spots to soak in the breathtaking vistas, or explore the quaint town of Willow City. 

Whether you’re a local or a visitor, the Willow City Loop provides a serene and visually stunning experience, perfect for a leisurely drive or a cycling adventure. Don’t forget your camera, as every turn presents a new, picture-perfect scene in this tranquil slice of Texas countryside.

The Salt Lick BBQ

If you’re craving authentic Texan barbecue, The Salt Lick BBQ is an essential stop.

Established in 1967, this family-run smokehouse serves up succulent, slow-cooked brisket, ribs, and sausage, all perfectly infused with the flavour of local woods. Their barbecue is one of my favourite things I ate in Texas.

Dine family-style at rustic picnic tables and don’t forget to bring your favourite bottle of wine to enjoy with your meal – it’s BYOB!

Hill Country peach stands

Summer in Hill Country means peach season, and the roadside stands are a must-visit for these juicy fruits. Area orchards offer a variety of peaches, from clingstones to freestones, each bursting with sweet flavour.

Beyond fresh peaches, you can indulge in homemade peach pies, jams, and even peach ice cream.

FUN FACT: Did you know that the city of Fredericksburg, as well as its wineries, it’s renowned for its peach orchards? It’s the perfect place to try them when in season.

Jacob’s Well

If you are looking for picturesque scenery and to be blown away by the beauty of nature, then you have to stop at Jacob’s Well!

Jacob’s Well is the second-largest submerged cave in Texas and is an active spring that lets out thousands of gallons of water everyday. The well itself is located in the Jacob’s Well Natural Area which is over 81 acres!

When visiting you can reserve a spot to go swimming in the well, talk about a magical experience! There is a charge to go swimming (all prices can be found on their website), but it is completely free to wander around the park and view the springs.

This is definetly a hidden gem in Texas and one of the top things to do in Texas Hill Country. Don’t forget to bring your camera. If there was ever an insta-worthy location, this is it!

Fredericksburg

Located right in the center of the region, this is one of the Texas Hill Country attractions you cannot miss! German charm and a historic city center can be found in Fredericksburg which is truly one of the cutest towns in Texas Hill Country!

The town was established in 1846, when the first German settlers came to the area. Check out the Pioneer Museum to learn more about the areas rich German heritage.

Take a stroll down Main Street to find one of a kind boutiques, coffee shops, delicious restaurants and dessert cafes. Fredericksburg is the sister city to Motabaur, Germany and you can sense the old world charm when walking around. Just strolling is truly one of the best things to do in Fredericksburg!

There are more than 50 vineyards and wineries in Gillespie County, where Fredericksburg is located. You can either book a more structured wine tour or if you are feeling spontaneous, hop on the wine shuttle that leaves from downtown every 10 minutes on Saturdays!

Schlitterbahn Waterpark

Are you the adventurous type? If so, you need to check out Schlitterbahn Waterpark!

This German Medieval themed waterpark has something for the whole family, which is why it is one of our top fun things to do in Texas Hill Country. It is also located less than an hour from San Antonio in New Braunfels, so it is close to a lot of other can’t miss vacation destinations.

For the thrill seekers there are tube slides, water coasters, downhill drops and even surfing. If relaxation is what you are looking for try one of the lazy rivers or the Dragon’s Lair heated pool with swim up bar.

The littlest kids will also be excited to play in the Butterfly Bayou or the Kinderhaven area which has a small pirate ship and slides. Sure to make even the most energetic kids fall asleep early!

Garner State Park

Garner State Park is the most popular parks in Texas for camping and once you visit, it is easy to tell why. The views are breathtaking, especially if you go during the fall. This is one of the best places to experience fall in Texas !

The park is located on the Frio river so make sure to pack your swim suit. You can go for a quick dip in the river or bring a tube and float down while taking in the gorgeous scenery.

With 16 miles of hiking trails there are so many great views to take in and places to explore.

They have historic cabins to rent on site or you can bring your own tent and camping gear to set up your base on one of their designated campsites. You can even try to catch your own fish dinner on the Frio river, but maybe bring a backup meal in case you aren’t so lucky!

Garner State Park is one of the most beautiful Texas Hill Country attractions and should be at the top of your list!

Hamilton Pool Preserve

Located not far from Austin, Hamilton Pool is one of the prettiest places to visit in Texas Hill Country.

The natural pool was formed long ago when the dome of an underground river fell due to erosion. The water is the most magical shade of jade green and features a 50 foot waterfall that flows into the pool!

Currently, they aren’t allowing visitors to swim in the waters because of safety concerns and falling rocks, but seeing this sight is still worth the trip.

To get to the pool you hike about a quarter of a mile from the parking lot and are rewarded with some of the most breathtaking views. You can even go on a guided hike, if you are looking for more information on the history of Hamilton Pool and the surrounding plants and wildlife.

Hamilton Pool Preserve is truly a sight to behold!

Enchanted Rock

For a truly mystical and out of this world experience, check out the Enchanted Rock State Natural Area. Enchanted Rock is a monadnock, which is basically a small mountain, made of pink granite. It is the largest of its kind in the U.S.

The area has almost 11 miles of hiking trails, including the awe-inspiring Summit Trail. Though the Enchanted Rock is the star, the surrounding landscape is rugged and beautiful.

Many myths and legends have been born from Enchanted Rock. The Tonkawa Indians believed they saw ghost fires and heard creepy noises on the top of the dome. Don’t be too scared though! Geologists say the noise is caused by changes in the weather and the “fires” were really just parts of the rock glistening after a rainfall.

Enchanted Rock State Natural Area is also an International Dark Sky Park, so make your trip extra magical with a night spent under the stars!

If you are already planning on seeing the sights in Fredericksburg, be sure to add Enchanted Rock to your itinerary since it is less than 20 miles away. What a fabulous vacation seeing two of the best things to do in Texas Hill Country.

This was the first of the San Antonio missions and was known as Mission San Antonio de Valero in colonial times. The Alamo is an important part of Texas history, in 1836 during the Texas Revolution a group of Texas soldiers defended it against the approaching Mexican army.

It is free to tour the church, but they also offer more in depth, guided tours if you are a history buff and looking to increase your Texas history knowledge! They also have flowering gardens and a bronze sculpture trail that shouldn’t be missed.

Gorman Falls is a 70 foot tall cascading waterfall that flows into the Colorado River. The trail to Gorman Falls is 2.6 miles roundtrip and is a fairly flat hike with little shade at the start (don’t forget your hat and sunscreen) but gets steeper the closer you get to the falls.

There is no swimming allowed by the falls, but that does not mean you should skip this stop. The falls are a natural wonder and need to be seen in person!

After seeing the falls make sure to check out the Spicewood Springs or take a cave tour. The park also offers camping sites and hiking trails along the Colorado River making this one of the best places to visit in Texas Hill Country.

Country music fans will want to make a stop in Luckenbach, which was made famous by the song Luckenbach, Texas by Waylon Jennings and Willie Nelson.

When Luckenbach was founded most of its residents were German immigrants. Nowadays there are only a handful of permanent residents and the place has a ghost town feel. The town has two main buildings, one is the old post office that operates as a general store selling souvenirs to visitors and the other is a dance hall were country artists come to play.

Hill Country Lavender was the first lavender field in the area. They got their start after a trip to Provence. The drive takes only about 20 minutes, but it’s chock full of wildflowers, scenic views and quaint farms.

A longer drive on TX-16 from Kerrville to Fredericksburg offers views of more expansive meadows of flowers along the road. Near Fredericksburg is the most heavily traveled wildflower drive in the state:  the Willow City Loop . This route is known for the mind-blowing variety of color. In addition to bluebonnets, you’ll see pops of yellow, red and purple. 

Eat Some Pie and Hike It Off in Marble Falls

The most famous landmark in Marble Falls is the Blue Bonnet Café . The masterful creations that routinely earn high praise include the coconut cream, chocolate meringue and German chocolate pies. While the dessert is the star of the show, the restaurant also serves up excellent pot roast, pork ribs and chicken and dumplings.

After such a high-calorie lunch, you’ll need a place to shed a little of that excess baggage. Fortunately, the Balcones Canyonlands National Wildlife Refuge is only a short drive away. The gorgeous (and endangered) golden-cheeked warbler nests in the park, but they’re usually hard to spot. The nature trails wind through peaceful canyons, along small creeks and past scenic overlooks. You may also spot armadillos, skunks and deer on the trail. 

Learn About LBJ and Science in Johnson City

The modest boyhood home of President Lyndon Baines Johnson is located in the heart of Johnson City. The tour takes only a few minutes, but it offers a glimpse of the humble beginnings of a boy who would go on to be one of our country’s most colorful and consequential presidents.

The LBJ Ranch is located a few miles west of Johnson City. In keeping with LBJ’s wishes, the property is still a working ranch. This is where LBJ welcomed world leaders and toyed with a few journalists. LBJ’s amphibious car is on display at the ranch. He used to offer journalists a ride without mentioning that the car could float. Then he would enjoy their reaction as he drove the car directly into a small lake on the property.

Among his many achievements, LBJ helped launch the space program, and Lady Bird Johnson is sometimes considered the mother of the modern environmental movement. So it seems fitting that Johnson City now has a hands-on museum devoted to science. The Science Mill is focused on getting kids interested in science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) careers. The exhibits cover everything from computer gaming to Tibetan singing bowls. Built out of an old grist mill, the site offers a wealth of visual stimuli to get those little brains whirring. Both children and adults alike will be mesmerized by the Mindball. Two competitors square off to see who can move a ball with their brain. A headband measures brain waves, and the ball’s motion is based on whoever can focus and relax the most.

Take a Glass-Bottom Boat Tour in San Marcos

The Meadows Center for Water and the Environment offers mellow rides on glass-bottom boats that cruise around Spring Lake. In the clear, spring-fed water, it’s easy to spot fish, turtles and interesting aquatic plants. Knowledgeable guides explain the intricacies of the ecosystem and its flora and fauna. Once the site of the Aquarena Springs amusement park, the center is now much more focused on its environmental mission and protecting this delicate natural resource. In addition to the boat tours, visitors can participate in guided kayak and standup paddleboard tours.  

Visit the Canyon of the Eagles in Burnet

Bald eagles were very rare in Texas until just a few years ago. They’re still not common, but there are several nesting pairs in and around Burnet during the winter months. At Canyon of the Eagles Nature Park , the Vanishing Texas River Cruise offers an excellent way to tour Lake Buchanan and enjoy the scenery and the wildlife. Back on land, the park also offers a range of other family-friendly activities, including group dog walks, wildlife shows and craft classes.

Witness Nature's Big Comeback in Bastrop

Bastrop State Park was devastated by a massive wildfire in 2011. Since then, hardworking staff members and volunteers have planted thousands of pine trees, and the park is slowly returning to its former glory. The region’s pine forest was known as the Lost Pines because the trees are uncommon in central Texas. Fortunately, the park’s rustic cabins made it through the fire unscathed. This is an excellent place to teach children about both the fragility and resiliency of nature. Some plants actually thrive after a major fire. 

To continue the nature theme for the day, head down the road to the Texas Reptile Zoo . The small zoo is home to snakes, crocodiles, tortoises and lizards. The site was formerly a plant nursery, and many of the greenhouses and other equipment have been repurposed to create habitats for the animals. In addition to displaying animals and educating the public, the staff at the facility participates in behavioral research, helping to unravel the mysteries of these strange creatures. Since most of the animals favor hot climates, the indoor spaces are kept warm. Make sure you dress appropriately and be prepared to sweat.

Take a Hill Country Wine Tour

Dozens of wineries and vineyards have popped up in the Hill Country over the last few years. As long as you have a designated driver, it’s fairly easy to come up with your own winery tour. The Texas Wine Trail organization even offers a handy online tool for mapping out DIY wine excursions. Texas Wine Tours , based in Fredericksburg, caters to groups of up to 10 people and operates several buses and vans. The tour company visits many of the most popular wineries, including Torre di Pietra, Becker Vineyards, Messina Hof and Santa Maria Cellars. 

Visit South Llano River State Park

South Llano River State Park is one of the most beautiful and unspoiled natural areas in the hill country. As an added benefit, it tends not to be as crowded as many other Texas parks. Paddling and floating on the river is the main attraction during the summer, but there are also bike trails and excellent spots for bird watching and fishing. A flock of wild turkeys roams the park and keeps campers amused with their goofy antics. There are also more than 250 other species of birds that frequent the park.

Although little known by foreign tourists, the Texas Hill Country region is the most picturesque area of Texas. Among its rolling hills you find small Germanic towns, ranches, wineries, and natural parks to explore. It also offers countless events: live music almost every night, weekly rodeos, historical reenactments, fairs, and music festivals.

In short, the Texas Hill Country has something to offer everyone, whether you’re a sports fan, history buff, country dancer, or wine connoisseur. Take your time, explore it slowly, and try not only to visit it, but to experience it as much as possible. Its authentic country western atmosphere will win you!

Where is Texas Hill Country?

The Texas Hill Country is located in central Texas . To identify it, draw an imaginary triangle between Austin , San Antonio, and Fredericksburg.

The main connecting roads are I-10, between San Antonio and Kerrville; US-290, between Fredericksburg and Austin; and I-35, between Austin and San Antonio.

It is so called because it is a territory of limestone hills, rich in rivers and lakes, and particularly fertile. In fact, a strong wine-making tradition has developed here, which has earned the region the nickname “Tuscany of Texas “.

This region has a rather peculiar climate, somewhere between the tropical climate of the south of the state and the semi-arid climate of the north. Rainfall is distributed fairly evenly over all months of the year, often in the form of heavy showers. Let’s look in detail at the climate season by season:

• winter is mild, with temperatures that always stay above freezing, and exceed 60 °F during the day. It’s a great season for those who don’t like the heat, but outdoor events and festivals are more limited, and museums are open on reduced hours.
• spring is already a hot season, temperatures reach 75 °F, and it’s the time of blooming bluebonnets, the purple flowers that are the symbol of Texas.
• summer is very hot and humid, with peaks of 95-105 °F°, and afternoon thunderstorms can occur.
• fall is very similar to spring, temperatures drop and humidity decreases. Foliage lovers will have to wait until November to see the trees tinged with warm orange hues.

The best time to visit Texas Hill Country is during the mid-seasons , April through June, and September through November.

The majority of events, such as concerts and rodeos, are concentrated on weekends , unfortunately also the busiest time for tourists. If you want to avoid crowds, know that in many places, such as Luckenbach, there are events almost every day during the summer. We recommend checking the programs on the official sites, so you can get organized better.

A stay of 2/3 nights is enough to see the main attractions of the Texas Hill Country , but you can extend it at will according to your passions. For example, if you decide to do the ranch experience, you’ll need to factor in 2/3 additional nights.

Include Texas Hill Country in a tour of Texas , either before or after you visit San Antonio and Austin. From there, you can then head out to the west of the state to see other attractions like Big Bend National Park .

Things to Do in Texas Hill Country

Let’s start with these two small towns of German origin , founded in the second half of the 1800s. Both are located along I-10, at exits 540 and 524 respectively coming from San Antonio.

Boerne runs along Main Street, which is called, in German, Hauptstrasse here. On the north side of the river are most of the stores, restaurants and bars, located in wood and brick buildings with colorful signs and beautiful porches for shelter from the sun. Main Plaza Park is the main square of the town, and here every second weekend of the month the Market Days is held, which is a craft market, with dozens of stalls.

The city is crossed by the Guadalupe River, which offers suggestive glimpses thanks to the quiet Cibolo Creek Trail , a 3-mile pedestrian path that you can take from the plaza, to the River Road Park. A little further south, perched on high ground, you can visit the distinctive St. Peter’s Catholic Church, which has dominated the city since 1866.

We continue for about 16 miles north to get to Comfort , a tiny village of 2300 inhabitants, but rich in historic buildings. Most of them are located in the original core of the town, between Seventh Street and High Street. The most significant is the Comfort Theatre , at 521 Seventh Street, the old 1930s art deco movie theater. Further on, at number 640, we find a stone and red brick building: it was built in 1907 as the headquarters of the Comfort State Bank , while from 1961 to 1982 it housed the city library.

Other historic structures have been converted into B&Bs and businesses, one example being the Hotel Faust . You can see them all on a short walk, stopping to browse the cafes and stores, places where time seems to stand still. If you’re in the mood for a snack, stop by the Lani’s Cheesecakes , a colorful and cozy bakery that serves tarts, cookies, and tall cheesecakes.

Comfort’s most symbolic monument is Treue der Union , also on High Street. This simple marble column commemorates the 65 men loyal to the Union who engaged in a bloody battle with Confederate forces during the Civil War, losing 28 men.

In the countryside around Comfort you can visit and buy wine in several wineries , for example at Bending Branch Winery , 4.5 miles from the city.

From Comfort we now head south to Bandera, the “cowboy capital of the world “. A title due to the fact that it was the nerve center of the Great Western Cattle Trail , a famous route of transhumance of cattle herds from ranches in Texas to markets in Kansas, Oklahoma and Nebraska. It was founded in 1852 as a base camp for logging activity from nearby cypress forests, and was later settled by a Polish community , the oldest in the United States.

Significant downtown buildings include the Bandera County Courthouse , the old courthouse, and the county jail. To discover the city’s history, visit the Frontier Time Museum , which includes a collection of 11,000 pieces including saddles, boots, clothing, everyday items and crafts, as well as bizarre and curious items. You can also visit the Hall of Fame of the area’s greatest cowboys and rodeo champions. The museum is open from 10 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Admission is $6 for adults and $2 for children ages 6-17.

However, the best reason to visit Bandera is for its western atmosphere , accentuated by the presence of stores selling country-themed boots, hats and leather goods.

Come on a Saturday, when Cowboys on Main , a fun historical reenactment with costumed actors and mock gunfights, is held. Between 10 a.m. and 2 p.m., Main Street fills with cowboys on horseback leading a parade of longhorn cattle, stagecoach rides and country music. The shooting takes place at 11 a.m. and 1 p.m., but at a different facility, due to safety concerns. To assist, head to the Rattle Snake Ridge at 126 State Hwy South behind the Visitor Center.

There are several ranches around town, some of which also offer overnight accommodations, and a variety of daily activities. I’ll discuss this in more detail in the section on accommodations, but I recommend that you consider this option. Although expensive, it is a unique experience.

About 18 miles from Bandera we find the Hill Country State Natural Area, a state park with vast green areas, quiet streams and narrow canyons. The most popular activities are hiking , mountain biking and horseback riding ; many locals come here equipped with tents and grills, to spend a weekend in nature.

There are 10 hiking trails . Below we list the most representative ones:

• Heritage Loop , a 1.5-mile loop trail with a 164-feet elevation gain. A family-friendly walk that passes by a now uninhabited ranch. Start from the Visitor Center.
• West Peak Overlook Trail, a 1.2 mile linear trail, quite steep given the 500-feet elevation gain. To take the trail, from the Visitor Center you must first take the Merrick Mile Trail for 2100 feet, and at the fork keep left. The trail climbs up to a viewpoint, with a 360° view of the prairie.

If you would like to go on a horseback riding trip, you can contact one of these companies , which offer tours of varying duration and difficulty.

The park is open daily from 8:15 am to 4:45 pm. Admission costs $6 per person for adults, free for children under 12. There are no facilities, so you’ll need to come equipped with food, drinks and gasoline.

We now travel 39 miles west towards the western end of Texas Hil Country. From TX-470 we continue to the village of Utopia, then take RM 187 and follow the Sabinal River through cypress, oak and pecan forests past Vanderpool to Lost Maples State Natural Area .

This state park is a small maple forest , with trees of a particular species typical of southern USA and northern Mexico. They grow in hilly regions with moderate temperatures and humidity, and love the shade. The park, pleasant even in summer, is particularly impressive in November, when the temperature range gives the leaves their characteristic colors of foliage.

The main activities are fishing, bird-watching, and hiking. Maples have very delicate surface roots, so we recommend staying on marked trails.

The trails intersect each other, creating a network about 10 miles long along the Sabinal and Can Creek rivers, with small caves, and the possibility of spotting birds and fawns.

If you’re undecided about which trail to take, I suggest the most comprehensive one, the West Trail . To take it, from the park entrance follow the road to the fork, then keep left, where there are toilets. It is 3.7 miles long, with 500 feet of elevation gain, and offers a pleasant, cool walk, especially in the area of Mystic Canyon .

If you’re feeling up to it, about halfway through there is an option of continuing on to the West Loop Trail . In this case, allow for another 2.5 miles and 330 feet of elevation gain, through a juniper forest and up to an elevated viewpoint.

The park is open daily from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Admission is $6 per person for adults, free for children 12 and under.

We return to the central Texas Hill Country and visit one of the region’s largest cities, Kerrville , which is located along TX-39 coming from Lost Maples, and on TX-173 coming instead from Bandera.

Before you start exploring, though, stop in nearby Ingram , about 6 miles away, also on TX-39. A copy of Stonehenge , a concrete structure about 2/3 the size of the original, has been standing here in a small park since 2010. A nice roadside attraction that also includes some Maoi, similar to those found on Easter Island.

James Kerr, a veteran of the Texas Revolution, founded the settlement that bears his name in 1856, and today Kerrville is a young and lively town, thanks to the presence of Schreiner University.

It is home to many musical events, the most famous of which is the Kerrville Folk Festival . Each spring, 30,000 people flock to the 18-day folk and country music festival.

Kerrville is also crossed by the Guadalupe River, in fact its main attractions are the parks and the walks along the river. The Louise Hays Park, is connected both with the island Tranquility Island, and the larger Kerrville-Schreiner Park, where you can picnic, play volleyball, and kayak down the river. To find it, take the Kerrville River Trail, a 5-mile pedestrian path that’s quiet and away from traffic.

Downtown, Water Street is a shopper’s paradise for crafts, clothing, home accessories, personal care products, books, and antiques. Popular stores include James Avery , a historic 1954 jewelry store, and Billy’s Western Wear , perfect for country enthusiasts, who will find boots, shirts and cowboy hats there.

One town where Germanic roots are clearly visible is Fredericksburg, population 10,000 and the unofficial capital of Texas Hill Country. It was founded in 1846 by a German community, so fond of their land that they refused to speak English and created a new language, Texas German .

The most famous attraction is the National Museum of the Pacific War . The museum focuses on the World War II battles that took place in the Pacific: Pearl Harbor, the American counterattack led by Colonel James Doolittle, the Battle of Iwo Jima, and of course the nuclear attacks on Hiroshima and Nagasaki. It includes several sections, each dedicated to a salient event, and showcases over 55,000 pieces including vehicles and aircraft, photographs, documents, weapons, uniforms, and models. After visiting the museum, stop by the well-kept Japanese Garden , a symbol of peace between the two populations.

The museum is open from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Wednesday through Sunday. The Pacific Combat Zone section follows a more limited schedule, 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Admission is $18 for adults, $14 for seniors and $8 for children.

Another important cultural center is the Pioneer Museum . The exhibit contains artifacts, documents, and a reproduction of a typical mid-1800s settlement. You can visit the schoolhouse, barn, public bathhouse, a log house, smokehouse, and several other buildings. Although detached from the main site, the prison (at 117 W San Antonio Street) and the small Vereinskirche church , located on Marktplatz, are also part of the museum. The church, built soon after the settlers arrived, was the city’s first public building, and also served as the town hall and school.

The museum is open Monday through Saturday, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Admission is $7.50 for adults and $3 for children ages 6-17.

The main street is Hauptstrasse , which has several Germanic-style buildings and is teeming with restaurants, cafes and stores. You shouldn’t miss two places: the lovely Christmas Store , a year-round Christmas decoration store, and the Lonestar Candy Bar , which serves 1950s-style candy. If you want to reach for your wallet, you’ll be spoiled for choice: handmade candles, license plates, home accessories, gourmet products, witty t-shirts, and even a popcorn store.

Lastly, for lovers of good wine, I suggest Elk Store , founded by Czech John Cyril Smajstrla in 1895, after arriving by ship in Galveston and sold as a slave in the cotton plantations. If you prefer a beer, since you are in the most German city of Texas, try Fredericksburg Brewing Company .

About two miles south of downtown we find Fort Martin Scott , the first American military outpost in Texas. Operating from 1848 to 1853, it was occupied by the Confederates during the Civil War, and later abandoned. It includes a pair of original buildings, the barracks and shed, and a memorial statue of the legendary Texas Rangers. The fort is open from 5 p.m. to 5 a.m., Thursday through Monday. Admission is free, but donations are accepted.

Of course, Fredericksburg also hosts several events. In addition to Oktoberfest, there’s the Gillespie County Fair in late August and the Food and Wine festival , which takes place in the second half of October. More than a village, this tiny town 10 miles from Fredericksburg is a saloon-restaurant that organizes live music events. In fact, there are only three permanent residents.

For country music lovers, this is a mythological place, the protagonist of Waylon Jennings’ poignant 1977 song , entitled Luckenbach , Texas, and one of the cornerstones of this genre.

Visit it during one of the many shows, and even stop for a bite to eat at the food stand. You’ll love this place nestled in the countryside so much you’ll never want to leave. We blew all our plans for the day to spend the afternoon here!

Keeping Fredericksburg as our point of reference, we travel north for about 27 miles along Ranch Road 965, a winding scenic road through the green hills of the Texas Hill Country.

We then arrive at Enchanted Rock State Park . The absolute star here is the enormous granite outcrop , or rather a huge monolith that sticks out of the ground. The rock, a sacred place for the natives, covers an area of about 1 mile², and rises 425 feet above the ground. It is the solidified part of a giant underground magma chamber, pushed to the surface from a depth of about 6.5 miles. What we see is but the tip of the iceberg, the dome of a much larger underground formation.

The main activity in this park is, of course, hiking . The many trails are all designed to see the giant boulder from every possible angle and, why not, climb it too. Climb to the top of Enchanted Rock is challenging but not impossible, you need some good lungs and a tolerance of the heat, but we are not talking about a real climb like Devils Tower in Wyoming .

• The Loop Trail is a circular trail that touches the main points of interest in the natural area as it goes around the rock formation, but always remains quite distant.
• To get really close to Enchanted Rock, and climb to the top, I recommend a combination of several trails , which also give you an overview of the park. From the main parking lot, take the Loop Trail to the right, then cross the creek and take the Turkey Pass Trail . Continue to the junction, keeping the boulder on your right, then turn left onto the Base Trail . Keep going for about 0.6 miles, then turn left to take the Echo Trail (if you want, you can take the short detour to Moss Lake from here, and then turn back). In this section, you will have to climb up the rocks a bit. Without even realizing it, or almost, you’ll be on the Summit Trail and at the top of Enchanted Rock. Stop and admire the view from the summit, then all you have to do is descend back to the parking lot.

The park is open daily, from 6:30 a.m. to 10 p.m. The parking lot fills up quickly, and when it is full, you cannot access the park. For this reason, I recommend visiting Enchanted Rock during the week, early in the morning or late in the afternoon. Admission is $8 for adults , and free for children 12 and under.

We return to Fredericksburg, and head east along US-290 for about 20 miles. Shortly after the village of Stonewall we find the Lyndon B. Johnson State Park and Historic Site , a site that is part of the NPS National Parks circuit.

Johnson, America’s 36th president and Kennedy’s successor, was a true Texan, very attached to his land. Except for a stint in the White House, he always lived here in the same place where he was born. Today, the estate and his ranch have become museums that you can visit on your own:

• Childhood home , where Johnson lived from his birth in 1908 until 1924. Furnished as it was in the 1920s, it depicts life in rural Texas well. The house can be visited on free ranger-led tours held hourly.
• Johnson Settlement, the family land where Johnson’s father and grandfather raised cattle. It features log houses, the barn, winery and windmill, plus a small themed exhibit.
• LBJ Ranch , also known as the “white house of Texas.” You can visit it freely on a driving tour, but you’ll need to get a permit at the Visitor Center first.

The Visitor Center is located in Stonewall at 199 State Park Road. The park is open every day except Christmas, New Year’s and Thanksgiving, from 9 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. Permission , however, must be requested by 4 p.m., and last admission is at 4:30 p.m. Admission is free.

Thirteen miles further east, also on US-290 W, stop in Johnson City . At the intersection of Ladybird Lane and Avenue G is a second museum , housing documents, clothing, and other personal items of the President and First Lady. You’ll be able to see two 30-minute films each, one about the Johnson presidency, and one about Ladybird Johnson’s life and activities. This museum follows the same hours as the Visitor Center at Stonewall, and admission is free here as well.

Starting in Johnson City, we take US-281 S north for 23 miles until we reach the banks of the Colorado River (not the one in the Grand Canyon !) and the Lakes Region. Here we find a series of reservoirs , created between 1939 and 1950 after the construction of several dams, which were intended to generate electricity for the densely populated area of Austin.

Let’s take a look at the most important lakes from north to south, and their characteristics:

• Lake Buchanan , formed in 1939. Here you can enjoy water sports, fishing, swimming, or just relax on its shores and have a picnic. In nearby Burnet , the Bluebonnet Festival , a family-friendly fair with live music, food and craft booths, and kids’ activities like sack races and rides, is held each spring.
• Inks Lake State Park , just south of Lake Buchanan. It’s a state park, so there is a fee for access, where you can hike and take in beautiful views. The two main sights are Devil’s Waterhole, a vantage point over the narrow gorge of Spring Creek, and Valley Spring Falls , reached by a short 0.8-mile hiking trail. There are other hiking trails in the southern area of the park, traversing the inland area between hills and pecan trees, with beautiful panoramic views of the lake. It is open daily from 8am to 10pm. Admission is $6 for adults, and free for children 12 and under.
• Lake LBJ, dedicated to President Johnson, who often entertained his international guests here. It is most famous for fishing, having been specially stocked with trout, perch, and catfish. In addition to fishing, you can also take private boat tours. If you are interested, contact one of these companies .
• Lake Travis : The closest lake to Austin, and therefore the most developed. There are many hotels, restaurants, bars, water and adventure parks. The towns on its shores are very active and lively, especially Lake Vista, Point Venture, Spicewood and Lakeway. Check out the calendar of all events online to find out if there’s anything interesting going on during your stay. Between Sunday brunches, concerts, cooking and yoga classes, and lake cruises, you’re sure to find something for you.

From Lake Travis, we take TX-71 south, and then turn right onto Hamilton Pool Road. After a little over 12 miles we will arrive at Hamilton Pool , a natural pool with a 50-feet waterfall surrounded by a limestone cave covered with stalactites, moss and ferns.

The water is always very cold, around 60 °F. Nevertheless, it is almost always possible to bathe (but check the warnings first). Visit it regardless, though, because it’s a really scenic place where you can take beautiful photos, or get some sun.

Since this is a protected natural area, you need to book access every day between March and October, and on weekends and holidays between November and February. You can also try to show up without a reservation, but of course you won’t be sure to get in. Admission costs $12 if you book online and $8 if you show up at the gate.

Hamilton Pool is located in the town of Dripping Springs , known as the “wedding capital” of Texas. Given the beauty of the landscape, many restaurants and farms have in fact specialized in this very area.

The town itself has no particular attractions, but in its surroundings there are many wineries and distilleries. These are the most famous ones:

• Deep Eddy Vodka , a recent company (from 2010), very youthful. They make vodkas in a variety of flavors.
• Bell Spring Winery , an exceptional location nestled in the countryside, which on weekends also sets up a nice food truck that serves great sandwiches.
• Twisted X Brewing , a brewery with a wide selection of great classics and modern and special proposals, such as mango beer.
• Treaty Oak Distilling , a whiskey distillery.

Although not “themed,” also stop by Texas Hill Country Olive Co , which has been producing olive oil since 2008 in a bucolic setting reminiscent of the Tuscan countryside. It’s possible to take guided tours of the estate, some with tastings.

Let’s now move to the eastern end of the Texas Hill Country , about 30 miles south of Austin along TX-130 S.

The town of Lockhart is known throughout the United States as the “barbecue capital “. It’s a tradition that dates back to the days of cattle drives , as the town was located on the most famous route ever, the Chisolm Trail. There are countless restaurants that specialize in grilling meat, but we’ll talk about that in the paragraph dedicated to the best places to eat.

After enjoying your great meal at the BBQ, head downtown to visit a couple of historic buildings:

• Caldwell County Courthouse , the old courthouse, is a beautiful 1894 sandstone building built in the Second Empire style. Apparently, it is the most photographed courthouse in Texas!
• 314 East Market Street was home to the 1908 county jail, now converted into the Caldwell County Jail Museum . The museum is only open on Saturdays and Sundays, from 1-5 pm, and inside you can see the concrete cells, located on the upper floors. Admission is $2 for adults and $1 for children.

We take Highway I-35, and exit at Exit 195 to land at one of the last destinations on the Texas Hill Country tour, N ew Braunfels.

Founded in 1845 by the German Prince Charles of Solms-Braunfels, it is a very populous city with a population of over 60,000. It is crossed by two rivers, the Guadalupe and the Comal River, in fact, the most popular activities for visitors take place right on the water.

You can rent kayaks and canoes to navigate the rivers, or one-person inflatable boats to lazily let the current carry you. Two of the companies that rent these large life preservers, which also come with can holders, are Texas Tubes and Landa River Trips , both near Landa Park. If you’re traveling with children, head to Schlitterbahn, a family-friendly water park with slides and water features.

Beach activities aside, most tourists come to New Braunfels to visit its small hamlet, Gruene .

Once an important center of cotton production, this little gem of German architecture is now devoted mainly to entertainment and tourism. Impossible to resist the temptation to buy something, there are so many small craft stores that populate its small center. Some examples? Cowboy hats, pottery, chocolate bars in the shape of Texas, and an authentic General Store that sells jams, caramel and other delicacies.

Gruene Hall , dating back to 1878, is the oldest honky tonk in Texas . Almost every night country, folk, and rock artists perform here, on a stage also trodden by the greatest country artists such as Garth Brooks, George Strait, Maren Morris, and even Kevin Costner . Check out the online calendar and attend one of the evenings, you can even take advantage of the dance floor to try your hand at moving a few steps.

We leave Gruene and take the River Road , a scenic cypress-lined road that follows the winding curves of the Guadalupe River to Canyon Lake.

This reservoir is known as the “gem” of Texas Hill Country , for the beauty of its views and the many activities that can be enjoyed there. You can swim in the lake, and there are as many as 8 areas on its shores where you can camp, picnic, fish, swim and spot wildlife. The two most popular, and most easily accessible, are Canyon Lake and North Lake .

However, there are also some interesting hikes to take, here are a couple.

• Along S Access Road, head to the point where the Guadalupe River is underground. This is where the River Trail starts, a 2-mile linear trail with 110 feet of elevation gain. It’s a family-friendly walk with beautiful views of the river, while the lake remains covered.
• If you’re up for a little more adventure, choose Canyon Lake Gorge, a 0.9-mile gorge created in 2002 after a flood. The gorge can only be visited on guided tours by the Guadalupe-Blanco River Authority. The tours last 3 hours, and offer a chance to see waterfalls, dinosaur footprints, and fossils. The cost is $10 per person, and you must be at least 7 years old to participate. To secure a spot, make reservations online , and then show up a few minutes early at 16029 S Access Rd, Canyon Lake.

The last destination on our Texas Hill Country tour is tiny Bulverde , a town of 5,000 just 25 miles north of San Antonio, famous for its amateur rodeo .

The Tejas Rodeo is held every Saturday between March and October, in a particularly atmospheric facility that recalls the Mexican atmosphere. This rodeo is not yet well known by tourists, and for this reason it has remained (for now) authentic. The rodeo starts at 19.30 and lasts about 2 hours. The facility, however, opens as early as 5:30 pm. Admission costs $20 for adults, and $10 for children between 3 and 12 years old.

Come early to browse the booths, enjoy a barbecue dinner, and try your hand at challenging the mechanical bull. After the cowboy performances, the evening continues on the dance floor, where you can rock out to live country music. The best way to end this long but wonderful tour of the most distinctive region in Texas!

Since there are really a lot of things to see, the best solution is to stay in at least a couple of hotels , so as to avoid traveling too many miles back and forth. If you prefer, you can also choose one hotel and go from there. The Texas Hill Country is relatively compact, so in a couple of hours you can get everywhere. In this case, choose a central city, such as Fredricksburg, Blanco or New Braunfels.

In all cities you will find classic American motels, for example:

• Holiday Inn Express & Suites in New Braunfels
• Best Western Inn & Suites in Boerne
• Best Western Plus in Fredericksburg

Since we are talking about a very picturesque region, however, it is also worth considering an atmospheric stay in some country B&Bs. Here are some facilities:

• Blanco Riverside Cottage , to sleep in colorful bungalows in Blanco
• Mansion Inn in Gruene , in a historic villa
• Lakehouse Bed and Breakfast , a super romantic resort in Canyon Lake

Finally, as we have already seen, in Texas Hill Country it is also possible to stay in a real ranch. In addition to the overnight stay, rates include full board and various daily activities, such as cowboy breakfast in the open country, horseback riding, guided hikes, water sports and evening entertainment. These are the most popular ranches, all within walking distance of Bandera:

• Dixie Dude Ranch
• Mayan Ranch
• Twin Elm Ranch

Good food, especially barbecue, is the norm in Texas Hill Country. After all, it’s no wonder, with so many farms, ranches, wineries and vineyards! Here are some of the best restaurants:

• Old Spanish Trail, in Bandera, serves a little bit of everything from meats and salads to Tex-Mex dishes and Southern favorites like country fried steak. You’re sure to find something to your taste.
• Old German Bakery & Restaurant is a German-inspired restaurant in Fredericksburg. It’s open for breakfast and lunch, and on their menu you’ll find bratwurst, wiener schnitzel, and sausages, just like in German breweries. However, there’s also no shortage of more American dishes like burgers, big salads and fried shrimp.
• Saltlick BBQ , in Driftwood, is a very famous meat restaurant that also appeared in Man vs Food. Its signature dish is the excellent brisket , served with sides, or in a sandwich. Also try the pulled pork, and close the meal with an excellent pecan pie. Take advantage of the delicious dips and sauces on sale to try and replicate the American BBQ at home.
• Lockhart, as we’ve seen, is the capital of barbecue. The historic places you shouldn’t miss are Black’s Barbecue , Smitty’s Market and Kreuz Market . Three rustic, spartan establishments where the quality of the meat is more important than the frills.
• Freiheit Country Store , in New Braunfels, primarily serves sandwiches and burgers, plus it hosts live music nights several nights a week.
• Gristmill River Restaurant , in tiny Gruene, is a restaurant that could be described as shabby chic , in a building that looks dilapidated, but is actually very well maintained. They serve meat, fish, burgers and big salads, at very competitive prices.

Texas Hill Country is a region of Central and South Texas that is known for its rolling hills, scenic vistas, blooming wildflowers, and charming towns. There are many Texas Hill Country towns that are worth a visit for history, nature, and amazing things to do.

From Fredericksburg, which is known for its German heritage and wineries, to Wimberley, which is home to some of the best swimming holes in the state, towns in Texas Hill Country has SO. MUCH. TO. OFFER. You can explore historic landmarks, browse charming shops, dine on delicious Texas barbecue, and enjoy live music at local dance halls.

We live right in the gateway to Hill Country, and visit these towns on a weekly basis. We have so many favorites and they are constantly evolving with the seasons, but current favorites include Wimberley and Johnson City! Amazing Texas Hill Country Towns

This state is home to many amazing small towns in Texas , but some of the best happen to be in Texas Hill Country!

If you would like to hit up several Texas Hill Country towns in one visit, a road trip from Austin to Fredericksburg would be a great way to do that! It is one of our favorite scenic drives in the state that we do at least a few times each year.

Here are some of the most charming towns that are worth visiting:

Fredericksburg

Fredericksburg is a popular destination for wine, history, nature, and art. The town is known for its German heritage, and you can explore the many galleries, boutiques, and restaurants on Main Street.

The town is also home to several museums, including the National Museum of the Pacific War and the Pioneer Museum . These museums are educational and interactive making them entertaining for the whole family. Our children recently spent hours at the Pioneer Museum and loved every minute of it.

There are several state parks near Fredericksburg that are all worth exploring. We are partial to Pedernales Falls State Park with its gorgeous flowing water and Enchanted Rock with its unique geological features!

Spring is exceptionally beautiful in Fredericksburg and a great spot for seeing bluebonnet fields in Texas . Year round you can enjoy wildflowers at Wildseed Farms .

• A Magical Guide to a Fredericksburg Christmas

Wimberley is somewhat of a hidden gem and I hope you love it as much as I do. The stunning Blue Hole Regional Park is one of the most beautiful (if not THE most beautiful) natural springs in Texas . Home also to Jacob’s Well, which is unfortunately not allowing swimming currently, where you can hike and picnic, a day in nature is easy to accomplish in Wimberley .

Main Street is lined with the cutest shops and tasty restaurants with outdoor patios. Artistically designed cowboy boots add charm to this Texas Hill Country small town and fun spots for photos.

For a taste of the historic south, be sure to check out Pioneer town with its rustic, old buildings and refreshing ice cream shop – it is one of the best things to do in Hill Country !

Boerne is a small town in Texas Hill Country with a surprising number of things to do and see. You can explore many caverns such as Cascade Caverns and a Cave Without a Name . Walk or bike the trails at Cibolo Creek .

The town is also home to several craft breweries, as well as a variety of restaurants and boutiques. Shop till you drop on the Hill Country Mile in the beautiful historic buildings and hit up some of the town’s antique shops.

When you need a bite to eat, we recommend grabbing lunch at The Dienger Trading Co. or breakfast tacos from Mary’s .

If you can swing a trip for Christmas in Boerne , I promise you won’t be disappointed! With themed activities each weekend, Boerne is one of the best Christmas towns in Texas . They kick off with a Dickens Christmas event the day after Thanksgiving that is not to be missed – see you there!

Ahh….Concan. Just hearing the name of this Texas Hill Country town gives me images of the beautiful Frio River that runs through it. Crystal clear and every so beautiful, visitors flock to the area to float the Frio River every summer. If you haven’t joined them yet, here is your reminder!

Kayaking, tubing, swimming, and rope swinging are all highly encouraged here. Hike through Garner State Park while you are at it and book yourself a cozy Frio River cabin for the weekend.

New Braunfels

New Braunfels is a charming town just north of San Antonio with a rich history. Many associate New Braunfels with their incredible Schlitterbahn Waterpark which is great fun! But you’ll definitely want to explore the many outdoor activities too, including tubing down the Guadalupe River !

New Braunfels has an incredible historic district called Gruene which is listed separately below.

Known for its live music, Gruene is a small town (actually just a historic district technically) in New Braunfels. Check out the historic Gruene Hall, the oldest dance hall in Texas. You’ll find this tiny, but beautiful historic area filled with fun shops and delicious restaurants. The town is also home to several vineyards and outdoor activities, including tubing down the Guadalupe River .

Dripping Springs

When I think of Dripping Springs, I think of distilleries and so do many other locals! This is one of the best Hill Country towns for those looking to explore the many wineries and distilleries in the area. We love gorgeous ambiance of Treaty Oak if you want a recommendation!

You can also explore the iconic Hamilton Pool Preserve . Hike the gorgeous paths and keep your eye on their website for swimming restrictions and availability.

Johnson City

Johnson City is the hometown of former president Lyndon B. Johnson and is a popular destination for those who want to explore Texas history. You’ll find Lyndon B. Johnson State Park and Historical Site, LBJ’s boyhood home, and his ranch open for tours. The Sauer-Beckman Living History Museum is an excellent addition to these historical sites and a family favorite.

Besides the immense amount of history in Johnson City, the beautiful Pedernales Falls State Park is the perfect spot for a swim or hike. The Science Mill is an excellent interactive museum for children.

And don’t forget Johnson City is home to Texas peaches! Summer is peach season, which means picking your own peaches , and stopping at orchards or roadside stand for a a bushel, a peck, or maybe just some homemade peach ice cream!

Marble Falls

Marble Falls is a charming town with a variety of outdoor activities, including hiking, fishing, and swimming in Lake Marble Falls. You can also explore the many vineyards, distilleries, and breweries in downtown as well as grab fresh pie from the Blue Bonnet Café .

Wondering if there are any actual waterfalls in Marble Falls? Not quite, but head to the Falls on the Colorado Museum for some fascinating history of the area as well as find out how the town got its name.

Marble Falls is arguably one of the best places to search out bluebonnets in the spring – at least I think so based on hours of driving around Hill Country every spring! If you choose Marble Falls as your Texas spring break destination , be sure to head to Balcones Canyonlands Wildlife Refuge and Deadman’s Hole for incredible flower fields. Marble Falls is also where you will find the famous “Bluebonnet House” and other amazing fields of Marble Falls bluebonnets .

• Sweet Things to do in Marble Falls

You’ll find plenty of Texas lavender in Blanco – this Hill Country town is the “Lavender Capital of Texas” after all! Head to Hill Country Lavender Farm for beautiful views, a picnic under the oak trees, thousands of lavender plants, and plenty of lavender tea, lavender sugar, and lavender soap for purchase.

You can explore the many outdoor activities in Blanco, including hiking, fishing, and swimming in the Blanco river. The town is also home to several vineyards and attractions, including the Blanco State Park. Stroll around the town square and check out the Historic Blanco Country Courthouse.

Llano is a small town known for its natural beauty. Enchanted Rock State Park is one of the highlights of this Texas Hill Country town. Hike the “big, pink rock,” take in the panoramic views, and see what all the fuss is about! Explore the trails throughout the park or book a campsite and stay a few days.

The town is also home to several vineyards and attractions, including the historic Llano County Courthouse.

Can you believe I almost published this post without including Spicewood?! I don’t know how I almost forgot one of my favorite towns in Texas Hill Country!

The highlights of Spicewood, in my humble opinion, is natural spring waterfalls, incredible wildflowers, and delicious barbecue. How is that for a trifecta of Hill Country amazing-ness?!

Head to Krause Springs anytime of the year for beautiful landscapes, extensive garden, and peaceful, refreshing waterfalls. In warm months, you’ll love the natural springs pool and lower natural swimming hole with waterfalls and rope swings.

I spend many days every spring scoping out the best spring flowers to share with ya’ll, and last spring Muleshoe Bend Recreation Area won the grand prize hands down. Incredible acres of bluebonnets, and so many others covered the hills and made for the most picturesque camping spots and picnic areas that I have ever seen.

For some tasty Texas BBQ after a long day of exploring, hop on over to Opie’s BBQ for some brisket, green beans, and blackberry cobbler. There are many other options, but that would be my order!

Luckenbach is the smallest Texas Hill Country town on our list with a population of….wait for it….only 3! However, it has a big reputation for its live music, historic post office and dance hall, and cowboy culture. You can explore the buildings, hear live music every day of the week, and dance the night away at the Luckenbach Dance Hall .

Burnet is known as the “Bluebonnet Capital of Texas” and is a popular destination for those looking to explore the many outdoor activities in the area, including hiking, fishing, and swimming in the beautiful Inks Lake (one of the best state parks in Hill Country ).

You can also explore the underground at Longhorn Cavern State Park. The town is also home to several vineyards and attractions, including the historic Burnet County Courthouse.

Plan your visit in April if you don’t want to miss the annual Bluebonnet Festi val !

Bandera is known as the “Cowboy Capital of the World” and is the perfect spot to explore the cowboy culture of Texas. You can explore the many outdoor activities, including hiking, fishing, swimming, and, of course, horse back riding at one of the amazing dude ranches in the area!

Expect great BBQ and beautiful views when heading to Bandera!

Austin is a city, rather than a small town, but since it is a gateway to Texas Hill Country, I would be remiss to skip it! With a variety of attractions, including live music, restaurants, and shops, there is an incredible number of things to do in Austin .

Plan to explore the many museums (may are free!) and attractions in the area, including the Texas State Capitol and the Bullock Texas State History Museum. Don’t miss a self-guided street art tour, picnic Zilker Park, bat tour at Congress Avenue Bridge, and all the BBQ and street tacos you can eat!

San Antonio

Also located on the edges of Texas Hill Country, San Antonio is a beautiful city rich with culture and things to do. Home to Riverwalk, the Alamo and several other missions, botanical gardens, Fiesta Texas theme park, and an amazing festival almost every month, you can fill several days here.

If you visit in the spring, you can hit up both strawberry picking in San Antonio and the colorful Fiesta San Antonio – this would be my favorite time of year there, although Christmas is pretty great too!

Head to Historic Market Square when you get hungry for tamales and conchas! Yum!

Texas Hill Country is a region in Central and South Texas full of limestone rock formations, wildflowers, natural springs and more. In addition to many natural places, Hill Country offers many wineries, small towns and great food to visitors.

The region encompasses San Antonio and Austin, but also includes a large area of rural countryside. This 31,000 square miles area can be considered the border between the American Southwest and Southeast.

This list includes over 40 amazing things to do in Hill Country and is divided between small towns, outdoor activities, food & drink, unique activities and places to stay.

Texas Hill Country has no shortage of small towns to visit. If you love small town charm, you will love exploring each town and seeing what makes each one special. These are my favorites based on my travels so far.

Fredericksburg is the most famous Hill Country small town for good reason. It is centrally located between San Antonio and Austin and has a unique German influence. It’s a great place to be based for a wine country tour, as there is a great number of wineries between here and Johnson City.

However, there is also a ton to do without leaving town. You can shop on Main Street, enjoy the restaurants in town and walk between tasting rooms sampling local wine. If you have never been to Texas Hill Country, Fredericksburg is the perfect place to begin.

Dripping Springs is known as ‘The Gateway to Texas Hill Country’ due to its proximity to Austin and is also the wedding capital of Texas due to the density of wedding venues there.

The town is surrounded by beautiful nature; it makes for a wonderful place to stay while exploring Hill Country wineries and distilleries. While in Dripping Springs, you can tour an olive vineyard, enjoy delicious breakfast from Rolling in Thyme and Dough and have dinner at Tillie’s, a high end restaurant inside of a former Vietnamese town hall.

Wimberley is located less than an hour from Austin and known for having some of the best natural swimming holes in Texas at Jacob’s Well and Blue Hole Regional Park. It’s a great place to visit in the summer for swimming, but can also be enjoyed year round. Downtown Wimberley is also a great place to shop and eat with amazing restaurants like The Leaning Pear.

Gruene is a neighborhood in New Braunfels known for having the oldest continually operating dance hall in Texas. The area is also full of cute boutiques and a great place to stay for floating the Comal and Guadalupe Rivers.

Castroville is located outside of San Antonio and known as the “The Little Alsace of Texas.” There is historic Alsatian architecture throughout the town, beautiful nature nearby and delicious food.

Boerne is a small hill country town full of history. It has the second oldest courthouse in Texas and has a western town used in movies. The town also has some beautiful parks and several quaint antique shops. It is a great place to stay if you are interested in hiking and floating the river in Guadalupe River State Park.

Outdoor Activities in Texas Hill Country

Hill Country is an incredible place for year round hiking and swimming in the warmer months. There are state parks, regional parks and unique outdoor activities to discover all across the region.

Floating down a Hill Country River is a must-do activity to add to your Texas bucket list. Some of the most popular rivers are the Guadalupe River, Frio River and Comal River. There are companies that offer rentals, drop-offs and pickups and this is a great activity to enjoy with a group of friends!

Jacob’s Well is a unique swimming hole where you can jump off a rock and into a cave that extends down about 140 feet. It is the second-largest fully-submerged cave in Texas and located in Wimberley. Reservations are required to swim, but anyone can take the short hike to see the spring year round.

Inks Lake is a gorgeous state park known for great swimming opportunities and some beautiful trails. You can spend your time cliff jumping into the water, or unwind at their popular campground areas.

Enchanted Rock is an iconic state park just north of Fredericksburg known for a massive pink granite dome. You can hike to the top of the dome for incredible views of the area or hike around the domes and enjoy the interesting rock formations and plant life.

There are several different caves in Texas Hill Country to explore. Check out Longhorn Caverns , Cave Without a Name, Cascades Caverns, Kickapoo Cavern or Natural Bridge. Each cave offers something different from live concerts and historic tours to zip lining above the ground.

Lost Maples is most famous for it’s fall foliage! The park is home to Uvalde bigtooth maple trees that show off beautiful fall colors in early November, but is also a great place to visit year round. Be sure to make a reservation in advance if you plan to visit during foliage season.

Garner State Park is known as one of the best Texas state parks for good reason. There are some incredible trails, like the Mt Baldy trail that leads to an amazing view of the Frio River. You can also hike to a cave that shines with crystals, float on the Frio River and enjoy the campgrounds. Be sure to make a reservation in advance to visit as Garner often reaches capacity.

Lady Bird Lake, or Town Lake to the locals, is the perfect place to kayak or paddleboard! Paddling here is a very popular activity and there are several outfitters along the river that you can rent from.

Barton Springs is a popular activity in Austin where you can swim in spring fed water. There is a fee to enter and it can get crowded on hot days. Keep in mind that the water is cold and you do have the option of swimming outside of the Barton Springs boundaries for free.

Swim in crystal clear blue water at Blue Hole Regional Park, a swimming hole surrounded by cypress trees in Wimberley. It’s a great place to spend several hours relaxing in the summer, just be sure to make a reservation in advance.

There are a few different places in Texas Hill Country where you can see Mexican free-tailed bats fly into the sky around sunset. The most famous is the South Congress bridge in Austin, where bats are best seen from late-spring to early-fall. In addition, you can see bat colonies in Old Tunnel State Park and Devil’s Sinkhole State Natural Area.

If you are visiting Hill Country in the spring, you will have the opportunity to see the beautiful bluebonnets in bloom. You will likely see them along the roads and all over, but some of the best places to go to see them up close include the Lady Bird Johnson Wildlife Center, Wildseed Farms, Enchanted Rock and the Willow City Loop Drive. Bluebonnets are typically in bloom throughout April.

WestCave is a beautiful grotto covered in green moss and situated next to a cave. It’s a magical place to visit with luscious plant life, blue water and interesting rock formations. It is only available to visit by guided tour and be sure to book your ticket in advance.

Hamilton Pool is a giant grotto that includes a waterfall that feeds into a beautiful pool. You can also swim during your visit in a designated area. Be sure to make a reservation in advance to hike down to this natural wonder.

The largest working wildflower farm in the country is located in Fredericksburg at Wildseed Farms. The farm is free to walk around and enjoy the flower fields, but you can also do a wine tasting, pick your own bouquet or purchase seeds for your garden.

Guadalupe River State Park has 4 miles of riverfront access to the Guadalupe River, making it a popular place for tubing in the summer. In addition to water activities, there are miles of hiking trails.

Blanco State Park is a popular place for swimming in the warmer months. There is a dam that passes through the river here and you can swim on either side of it. Tubes and kayaks are typically available to rent from the park or you can bring your own.

Government Canyon is a park located just outside of San Antonio with several miles of hiking trails for all skill levels. The park is also home to the only known dinosaur tracks in the county and offers some amazing views.

Canyon Lake is a beautiful lake surrounded by eight different parks that offer swimming, camping and picnicking. It’s a beautiful place to relax and enjoy lakeside views.

Pedernales Falls is home to an impressive area of limestone, mini waterfalls and pools of water. The park offers areas to swim, miles of hiking trails and is known for being one of the most beautiful places in the heart of Texas Hill Country.

Mckinney Falls is a state park just a few minutes away from Austin and is known for waterfalls that feed into swimming holes. The park has beautiful rock formations, hiking trails and some historic sites to enjoy.

Unique Things To Do in Texas Hill Country

Stonehenge II is a unique attraction for visitors to explore in Ingrams, Texas. The sculpture is 90% as wide and 60% as tall as the real Stonehenge in the UK. There are also two Easter Island heads next to Stonehenge. The sculptures were conceived by artists Al Shepperd and Doug Hill.

The Lyndon B. Johnson Historic Park is actually both a national and state historic site. On one side of the property, you can take a driving tour of the property where former-president Lyndon B. Johnson lived and even see the plane that he traveled on between Washington D.C. and Texas.

On the other side, there is a historic living farm where you can see what a German farm was like in the late 1800’s. There are also giant pastures with bison and longhorn. Both sites are free to enter and it’s worth spending at least half a day exploring these sites.

You may have heard of the Alamo and it’s certainly worth seeing, but I personally love visiting the other missions in San Antonio even more. Four missions make up the San Antonio Missions National Historical Park and they are connected via a hiking and biking trail.

All of the missions are over 300 years old and each one has its own unique but beautiful architecture. I recommend renting bikes and spending an afternoon exploring each of the missions via the trails that connect them.

The Cathedral of Junk is a unique destination to explore in Austin if you enjoy interesting art installations. The artist Vince Hannemann has spent over 30 years building an incredible structure made of found objects in his backyard. You could spend hours admiring the multi-levels of various objects and details, it’s truly fascinating! Be sure to call ahead for an appointment and bring a $5 donation.

Hill Country is full of grape vineyards, but there is only one olive vineyard! Texas Hill Country Olive Co is a working olive vineyard and olive oil mill that offers tours, tastings, meals and more.

There are several different types of tours that allow you to learn about the olives being grown, how olive oil is made and all aspects of the production. You can also enjoy a tasting that includes several different flavors of olive oil and balsamics. This is a really unique experience and the perfect place to purchase high quality, local olive oil.

Luckenbach is a quirky unincorporated community known for live music and having a population of three. It’s a great place to enjoy a cold beer, enjoy some country music and take a photo at the kissing booth.

Wineries, Breweries and Restaurants in Hill Country

There are over 100 wineries in Texas Hill Country, meaning there is a spot for everyone based on your taste, location and the atmosphere you prefer. You’ll find the highest concentration of wineries between Fredericksburg and Johnson City along 290.

To visit, you can go on a guided wine tour or drive yourself if you have a designated driver. Some of my favorite wineries are Signor Vineyards for a beautiful atmosphere, Becker Vineyards for amazing service and Kuhlman Cellars for a great patio view and delicious food pairings. Many of the wineries require reservations, so be sure to check their websites for details.

There are many amazing restaurants in Texas Hill Country, but one that really stands out to me is Southold Farm + Cellar. This winery and restaurant is situated up on a hill so you can take in amazing views of Hill Country during your meal. You can visit for a sunset dinner to enjoy their ever changing menu or a wine tasting. Check their website for current offerings and to make a reservation.

There are a couple establishments in Hill Country that I absolutely love for enjoying a cold beer among farm animals and large open spaces. Jester King is situated on a huge property and serves their own wine, cider and beer. I particularly love all of their amazing sour ales. They also serve amazing pizza and you’ll have the opportunity to see goats while on a tour or perhaps just wandering around.

Another great spot for views and a drink is Shady Llama. This outdoor bar is home to llamas and donkeys that you may get to see up close if they are at the fence. Shady Llama has a food truck in addition to a large selection of drinks.

Texas Hill Country is home to several distilleries if you would like to enjoy something a bit stronger than wine or beer. Options include Deep Eddy Vodka Distillery in Dripping Springs, Cypress Creek Reserve Rum Distillery in Wimberley and Desert Door Distillery in Driftwood.

Austin has incredible tacos and it’s always worth stopping for some foil-wrapped goodness while you’re passing through. I recommend Veracruz All Natural, El Chilito and Vaquero Taquero for taco joints with vegetarian options, but you can’t go wrong with taco trucks and restaurants all across the city.

If you are a meat eater, eating Texas BBQ is a must when traveling around Hill Country. I am a vegetarian but some Hill Country BBQ joints I’ve heard good things about are Payne’s, Salt Lick and Cooper’s Old Time Pit. There are also tons of BBQ options in Austin, some of the best being Franklin’s, Interstellar or Leroy and Lewis.

Unique Places to Stay in Hill Country

If you love instagramable glamping locations, Blue Skies Retro Resort is for you! Here you can stay in one of the five retro trailers that each have their own pastel color. The property also has a pool and each trailer gets their own giant bathroom to use next to the pool area. It is located 15 minutes outside of Fredericksburg and the perfect place for a relaxing stay.

Havenwald is a dreamy property in Texas Hill Country home to fairytale cottages that each have their own theme. The Robin Hood Hideout cabin is full of whimsical details like stained glass windows, reclaimed wood, a spiral staircase and more. So much detail and care has been put into this property and it’s such a special place to stay.

Wimberley is home to a few different unique places to glamp. There are a couple luxurious locations like Collective Hill Country and Yurtopia Wimberley which are stunning properties. For something less expensive, I highly recommend the airbnb listings Basecmap and Happy Camper. These airstreams have a ton of outdoor space and a hot tub to relax in after a day of exploring.

A bed and breakfast is a wonderful way to connect with other travelers, enjoy home cooked meals and stay somewhere that feels like home. There are multiple historic homes in Fredericksburg where you can enjoy a bed and breakfast experience. The town's reputation as an art hub is largely due to the influence of minimalist artist Donald Judd, whose large-scale installations can currently be viewed at the Chinati Foundation.

Nearby, the stunning landscapes of Big Bend National Park and the Davis Mountains State Park offer outdoor activities such as hiking, bird watching, and camping. Just be sure to bring lots of water while traveling in these arid environments.

Start your visit at the Granbury Opera House, a beautifully restored 1886 venue, which still hosts a variety of theatrical performances and concerts. Next over, the Hood County Courthouse, another historic landmark, dominates the town square and simply yearns to have its photo taken, with its gothic architecture that is hard to miss. The Granbury Historic Railroad Depot and the Hood County Jail Museum provide yet more fascinating insights into the area's past.

Nacogdoches

Nacogdoches is the oldest town in Texas, having been originally founded in 1837. Also home to Stephen F. Austin State University, this unique town of the SFA Mast Arboretum, is a beautiful 10-acre garden with diverse plant collections. Historians can also explore the Sterne-Hoya House Museum and Library, which dates back to the early 19th century, and the Old Stone Fort Museum, located on the university campus. Spend some time hiking the Lanana Creek Trail in the downtown core, a scenic pathway that is also an excellent bike route. Nacogdoches also hosts various annual festivals, such as the Texas Blueberry Festival, a celebration of the local blueberry harvest, for which this region is well-known.

Sitting halfway between Houston and Austin, Brenham is possibly best known for its vibrant bluebonnet fields, a brilliant purple flower that grows well in the temperate climate of this area, and as the home of Blue Bell Creameries.

Take a mouth-watering tour of the Blue Bell Creameries factory to learn about ice cream production and enjoy a scoop of their famous ice cream. Other attractions in Brenham, such as the Brenham Heritage Museum and the historic Simon Theatre, are also great ways to fill out a day. For a taste of local agriculture, the nearby Chappell Hill Lavender Farm is a picture-perfect setting for picking lavender and shopping for lavender-based products.

Take some time to drive out to the Washington-on-the-Brazos State Historic Site, where Texas declared its independence from Mexico. This iconic landmark has a visitor center, and many paths weaving throughout, allowing you to explore at your own pace.

Enchanted Rock is considered a giant archaeological area; finds have included ancient spear tips and pottery dating back around 12,000 years. 

Shop hop in Fredericksburg

Get your bearings with a stroll through downtown Fredericksburg , known for its German heritage. Main Street is always bustling with visitors popping in and out of antique shops, German bakeries, souvenir stores, and art galleries. Combine shopping and lunching with a visit to Woerner Warehouse Café , a rustic antiques warehouse that also serves up farm-fresh fare.  

Soak up some local history

Learn about the town’s German roots and pioneering spirit with a visit to the Pioneer Museum . Fredericksburg is also home to the National Museum of the Pacific War , which might seem out of place in this small town—until you realize that Fleet Admiral Nimitz, who led the U.S. to victory over Japan in World War II, grew up here.    

Chase waterfalls

Fuel up with a killer breakfast burrito at Caliche Coffee Bar . Then, plug Pedernales Falls State Park into your GPS, an easy one-hour drive east. Located along the Blanco River with sandy shores and impressive rock formations, it offers one of the most scenic settings in all of Texas, with nearly a dozen hiking trails that vary in length and skill level. The Blanco River is also a popular spot for float trips; the easiest access point is in Blanco State Park , about 30 minutes’ drive away. 

Make a splash 

Hop back in the car and head to the charming town of Wimberley. Swing by The Shady Llama on your way for a hot-pressed Cubano sandwich and cold beer. At this family and pet-friendly beer garden, you may even spot a resident llama or mini donkey. Then gear up for a cool dip at the spring-fed Blue Hole Regional Park , an iconic Texas swimming hole. If you visit from May 1 until Labor Day, you’ll need a reservation.  

Say “prost!”

By now you’ll have worked up quite the appetite, so head back to Fredericksburg. Tonight, it could only be German cuisine in this German town with its German-style breweries and yearly Oktoberfest. The dish to try is duck schnitzel ( pictured )— Otto’s German Bistro does a fine one.

Raise a glass

With two hikes behind you, it’s time to unwind. After a lie-in, hop in your car and head to the stretch of Highway 290 between Fredericksburg and Dripping Springs, where many of the best Hill Country vineyards lie. We recommend heading to William Chris Vineyards ( pictured ), where you can book a lunchtime picnic experience and sip a velvety petite sirah among the vines.

Toe-tap, Texas style

End your Hill Country visit on a high note in Luckenbach , a town with a current population of just three, which started as a trading post in 1849 and was made famous in song by the likes of Willie Nelson and Waylon Jennings in 1977. It now consists of a general store, bar, and dance hall with daily live music, and is an iconic (and photogenic) spot to spend the afternoon listening to country tunes. As Jennings sang, Out in Luckenbach, Texas, ain’t nobody feelin’ no pain . 

Make a tasty pitstop

One last tip: If you’re headed back to Austin, stop by The Salt Lick BBQ in Driftwood on your way for a smoky brisket or rib dinner—a perfectly Texas way to end your trip.

When people think of the Texas Hill Country, there are several hot spots that come to mind: Schlitterbahn, the Alamo, and a visit to the State Capital are places that everyone knows about and has probably already visited. The bad thing about these destinations is that they’re usually terribly crowded. The good news is that the Texas Hill Country is positively packed with other unique attractions–many of them less popular but just as incredible.

1.  Cave Without a Name, Boerne

Cave Without a Name is a natural, living cavern that some say the most beautiful in Texas. The Cave is filled with spectacular formations of Stalactites, Stalagmites, delicate Soda Straws, Cave Drapery, magnificent Flowstones, Rimstone Dams, and more.

2.  Jacob’s Well, Wimberley

Jacob’s Well is an artesian spring that releases thousands of gallons of water a day and is the second largest fully submerged cave in Texas. While the Well is closed for swimming until May, visitors can still hike around and view Jacob’s Well in the meantime.

8.  Fossil Hunting in the Texas Hill Country

Believe it or not, the Texas Hill Country looked very different millions of years ago. Many areas were under the ocean and those that weren’t under water were populated with dinosaurs and other prehistoric creatures. Thanks, in large part to the limestone that’s so prevalent in this area, fossils are fairly easy to find–even for a novice. Places like Dinosaur Valley State Park in Glen Rose (though, not in the Hill Country) offer visitors a chance to (literally) walk in the footsteps of dinosaurs and do some serious fossil hunting.

How to get to Houston

Fly into either George Bush Intercontinental Airport (IAH) or William P. Hobby Airport (HOBBY), the city's oldest commercial airport. IAH is about 20 miles from downtown Houston while HOBBY is a little less than 10 miles from the city's center.

2. Big Bend National Park

• Come for: Beautiful, rugged West Texas desert
• Where to stay: The Gage Hotel

Big Bend National Park is one of the country's bewitching national parks , covering more than 800,000 acres. The landscape is dotted with cactus, yucca, aspen, mesquite, and Ponderosa pine and populated by critters like bobcat, javelinas, and mountain lions. Here, visitors can kayak the Rio Grande or hike, bike, or camp in the Chisos Mountains, which tower nearly a mile above the Chihuahuan Desert. The 4.8-mile Lost Mine Trail offers sweeping views of Casa Grande and Juniper Canyon; the strenuous South Rim traverses nearly 14.5 miles with 2,000 feet gained in elevation.

The best place to stay is in the park itself, either at the 60-site campground at Chisos Basin or one of five stone cottages at the Chisos Mountain Lodge , the only brick-and-mortar accommodations in the park. However, if something more developed is your game, drive to Marathon, the "Gateway to Big Bend" and stay at the Gage Hotel , housed in a mission-style adobe building constructed in 1927.

How to get to Big Bend National Park

The closest airport to Big Bend National Park is El Paso International Airport (ELP), which is 287 miles or four and a half hours away. From Austin, the drive will be 435 miles, or about six and a half hours. From San Antonio, it will be 370 miles and will take about six hours.

3. Fredericksburg

• Come for: A historic German town in the heart of Texas wine country
• Where to stay: The Hoffman Haus

Though Texans have long known its laid-back charms, the Texas Hill Country is having a moment as of late thanks to the forecast total eclipse that will pass through the area on April 8, 2024. Fredericksburg may be the region's crown jewel. Founded by German immigrants in 1946, the town of less than 30,000 is now known for its German restaurants and breweries, booming winery scene, and fresh peaches that grow in its orchards.

After booking a room at the Hoffman Haus (a bed-and-breakfast that delivers breakfast to guest rooms via gingham-covered picnic basket), explore the more than 150 local shops in downtown Fredericksburg and then learn about the town's history at the Pioneer Museum . Finish the day with peach cobbler topped with Blue Bell ice cream at Das Peach Haus , which also sells jams, jellies, and preserves.

How to get to Fredericksburg

Fredericksburg is located in the Texas Hill Country, which is not serviced by any major airports. Visitors will need to fly into either Austin-Bergstrom International Airport (AUS) or San Antonio International Airport (SAT) and then drive. From Austin, it's about a 90-minute drive, while San Antonio is an hour away.

Located squarely in the middle of nowhere deep in West Texas, Marfa is obsessed with art, thanks to the efforts of minimalist artist Donald Judd who moved to the area in the 1970s. There are about 2,000 residents and 19 permanent galleries in town, including the Judd Foundation and the Chinati Foundation (both founded by Judd), the Inde/Jacobs Gallery , and the Rule Gallery .

While Marfa may be a small town, there is no shortage of great eats: For wood-fired pizza, check out Para Llevar , and for creative cocktails and eclectic dishes, go to the Water Stop , which has a rotisserie chicken dish on its menu that Bon Appétit called the "second best reason to go to Marfa ." As an added bonus, the town is an hour and a half drive from Big Bend National Park (see above).

How to get to Marfa

The nearest international airport to Marfa is El Paso International Airport (ELP). From there, it's a two-and-a-half hour drive to Marfa. However, it's not uncommon for people to drive 430 miles from Austin or around 400 miles from San Antonio.

5. San Antonio

• Come for: Puro San Antonio
• Where to stay: Hotel Emma

Now, I may be biased as a native San Antonian, but Alamo City is the most stunning of all the Lone Star State's metropolitan areas. Thanks to a series of extensions, the River Walk is now 15 miles long, and it's the perfect place to take a long hike or bike ride (albeit, not through the busy downtown corridor, usually packed with tourists and day drinkers). And with the transformation of the Pearl Brewery from condemned building to a vibrant cultural hub, the city has a new favorite hangout. At the Pearl, visitors will find Brasserie Mon Chou Chou , which is perhaps one of the best French restaurants in the state, Cured , which focuses on farm-to-table American cuisine, and Best Quality Daughter , which serves Asian American food inspired by Jennifer Dobbertin's South Texas upbringing.

How to get to San Antonio

Fly into San Antonio National Airport and then drive or take a cab to downtown, about eight miles away.

6. Port Aransas

• Come for: Quiet, small beach town vibes
• Where to stay: The Tarpon Inn

Sure, Galveston is one of the most visited beach destinations in the state and South Padre Island is popular among spring breakers. But Port Aransas offers small town charm along an immaculate stretch of white-sand Texas coastline. Here, visitors will find 18 miles of beaches and a cornucopia of fresh Gulf Coast seafood: red snapper, blue crab, oysters, and endless quantities of shrimp. The last wild flock of endangered whooping cranes make their winter home at the Aransas National Wildlife Refuge. Between April and August, travelers can witness baby sea turtles (including the endangered species, Kemp's ridley) make their big journey to the ocean at Mustang Island State Park , 16 miles south of Port Aransas.

How to get to Port Aransas

Fly into Corpus Christi International Airport and then drive four minutes north on Mustang Island to reach Port Aransas. Many folks also drive in from Houston (200 miles away), San Antonio (180 miles away), and Austin (200 miles away).

There's a little joke in Austin that every generation of Austinites says, "You should have seen it 10 years ago." And it's true. Over the past three years or so, Austin's skyline has transformed thanks to an influx of folks and tech companies looking for a place to weather out the early days of the COVID pandemic.

But that's not to say that Austin has lost its soul. The Live Music Capital of the World is still very much focused on music-head over to the Skylark Lounge for soulful blues and funk bands, the Continental Club for jazz, and the Broken Spoke for a tried-and-true honky-tonk experience. The state capital's culinary scene has come into its own as well. Dark, broody, and only open 4 p.m. to 11 p.m. (midnight on weekends), East Austin favorite Justine's Brasserie serves French cuisine and craft cocktails by the glow of dim lamps. Franklin Barbecue has had its praises sung the world over for its tender brisket, and the adulations are more than deserved-hop in line or order in advance on its website. Jester King Brewery , located on the outskirts of Austin on a 100-acre Hill Country spread, specializes in barrel-aged wild ales and wood-fired pizzas.

The Texas capital is serviced by Austin-Bergstrom International Airport (AUS), about five miles southeast of downtown Austin. The easiest way to get out of the airport and into the city is via car.

The Texas Panhandle has admittedly been overlooked as its vast seas of grass make it an ideal place to raise cattle rather than, say, see mind-blowing vistas. However, the area surrounding Lubbock has more than 9 million acres devoted to growing wine grapes-the region produces 80 percent of the state's , far more than the Hill Country. Consider putting McPherson Cellars , the Llano Estacado winery, vino-and-tapas restaurant La Diosa Cellars , and the Funky Door Bistro & Wine Room on your to-do list. After you've had your fill of wine, head over to the Buddy Holly Center , where visitors can learn all about the rock ‘n' roll legend. And if you're looking for something more outdoorsy to do, drive 90 minutes north to Palo Duro Canyon State Park , the second largest canyon system in the United States after Arizona's Grand Canyon.

9. Fort Worth

• Come for: Cowboy charm with big city amenities
• Where to stay: Bowie House

Long overshadowed by its glitzy neighbor, Dallas , Fort Worth is steadily coming into its own. Known for its historic stockyards , in operation since 1866 (it still puts on a twice daily cattle drive), Fort Worth is now attracting attention as the next Texas boomtown -and it's attracting travelers' attention as well. One of the latest hotels to hit the scene is the Bowie House (which opened in December of this year), an Auberge Resorts Collection property that pays homage to the West and owner Jo Ellard's love of horses.

Fort Worth is also making headlines in the culinary realm. In 2021, Goldee's Barbecue snagged Texas Monthly 's top spot on its annual list of the 50 Best BBQ Joints -the restaurant is planning to open a second location, Ribee's, which will focus solely on ribs, soon. But if cowboys and barbecue aren't your thing, Fort Worth has a healthy offering of museums in town including the Modern Art Museum of Fort Worth and the Fort Worth Museum of Science and History .

How to get to Fort Worth

Dallas/Fort Worth International Airport is located almost dead center between Dallas and Fort Worth. From the airport, it's about a half an hour's drive into the heart of Fort Worth.
