Great App, Good Deals

Honey is a great tool for trying to find savings on just about anything pertaining to online shopping. Browser version is extremely easy to utilize and usually helps to save a couple bucks here and there. Only gripe is that there could be better app accessibility. Honey unfortunately can’t be used properly on the phone even with the app. While this isn’t a big issue at all it would help for accessibility in streamlining the app as a lot of online shopping is mobile based. Overall though Honey in itself is absolutely amazing and has helped me save a good amount of money in my orders.

Developer Response ,

Yay! Ryan, we're happy to hear that you're enjoying Honey to save on your purchases. As for shopping within the mobile app, we'd love to hear your specific feedback/experience as well. Do email us at [email protected] so we can look into it. :)

Not reliable but works

If you are using this app to religiously make cash back; it isn’t worth your time. However, I use it for occasional cash back as a nice perk and cash out immediately after the balance hits the account to eliminate having to track if they are staying accountable with them. There are a lot of items that can’t be droplisted (frustrating); which is another thing I frequently do with this app to save money. Yes, the reviews are right, the coupons provided hardly ever work. I like the app because it is a great reminder there are other coupons out there and I can usually find it for cheaper. I like to use it to compare the prices at stores as well as see current price trends. I am not a “buy immediately” kind of person so being able to watch and track when I need to ask for a price adjustment is nice. Overall, not a very helpful app and you will not make a lot of money off it. The nicety of it comes from the savings you get by waiting for the price to drop or finding other coupons.

Honey made iOS 15 Safari CRAWL!

I installed the new iOS 15 on my iPhone (12 Pro Max 512gb) and installed Honey, as I enjoy using it on my computers. Later, when actually using Safari, I noted that there was a multi-second delay before loading a site, link, or reloading a site. Also, when I tried to swipe to scroll, it would mostly just not respond, or would sometimes start responding after 2-3 seconds. This happens on every screen of every web site. I initially tried closing Safari and reloading, resetting the phone, etc. nothing made a difference. I later remembered that I had attached Honey, and disabled it. The problem was instantly solved. Disabling Honey fixed the problem, so I began to look for correctable issues with Honey. There was an update (2.2.2) in the App Store that reported that it improved performance in iOS Safari. Perfect! Sounded like what I needed. However, after installing the update and closing/reloading Safari, the old crippling problem was back. I turned Honey off again, and performance again became crisp. I’m sure this is a bug that they can address, but for now, using Honey cripples my iPhone. I hope it will get fixed soon.
Hey there! We appreciate you surfacing this with us. Great news - our tech team has released a fix for this now. Please let us know if the issue has been fixed on your end as well. If not, email us at [email protected] :)

PayPal Announces Support for Safari Passkeys Feature

Popular payments service PayPal today announced that it is introducing support for passkeys, providing an easier and more secure login method for PayPal accounts. Apple integrated passkeys into iOS with the launch of iOS 16, and it is also available in iPadOS 16.1 and macOS Ventura, coming today.

paypal passkey

PayPal says that passkey logins will be available to iPhone , iPad , and Mac users on the PayPal website, and it will expand to other platforms in the future. Passkeys replace passwords, and will allow users to log in without remembering a password.

To create a passkey, PayPal users can log in to the website and then choose the "Create a passkey" option. Passkeys on iOS and Mac devices sync with iCloud Keychain for security purposes, and logins are authenticated with Face ID or Touch ID .

While PayPal is one of the first companies to implement passkeys support, there are other apps and websites that it works with, including Best Buy, eBay, Dashlane, and Kayak.

The PayPal website gains support for passkey logins on Apple devices

Authenticating yourself with the PayPal website using passkeys technology works on the iPhone, iPad and Mac in the US, with additional countries coming later.

iPhone in a businessman's hands with the Safari browser showcasing the PayPal website with the option to create a passkey for login

  • What’s happening? PayPal is among the first major services to roll out support for the new password-less login method on Apple devices first.
  • Why care? Passkey technology makes online accounts like PayPal more secure by ditching the password in favor of cryptographic key pairs.
  • What to do? Update your iPhone, iPad and Mac to iOS 16, iPadOS 16.1 and macOS Ventura, respectively, to be able to use passkeys in Safari.

PayPal adopts passkeys for web logins

The official announcement was published on October 25, 2022, in the PayPal Newsroom . An option to use a secure passkey token is currently available on PayPal’s mobile and desktop website for customers in the United States.

The company says it’s planning on implementing passkey support on non-Apple platforms, its mobile app and in other countries in early 2023.

Passkey technology makes PayPal more secure by replacing the password with something that’s far harder to crack: cryptographic keys. Instead of typing your password, you just scan your face or finger for biometric verification, that’s it!

More security for your PayPal account

Apple supports passkeys across the iPhone, iPad and Mac as long as those devices are running iOS 16.0, iPadOS 16.1 and macOS Ventura, respectively.

Passkeys aren’t exclusive to Apple. They’re an industry-wide security standard based on FIDO Alliance and W3C standards, backed by industry heavyweights.

You can see passkeys in action on the Apple ID website—go to appleid.apple.com in Safari on your iPhone and click the Sign In button.

How to turn on passkey login on PayPal.com

You will need to manually turn on passkey logins for PayPal.com by logging into the mobile or desktop website at PayPal.com using Safari on an iPhone with iOS 16.0 or later, iPad with iPadOS 16.1 or later or Mac with macOS Ventura or later.

If not presented find an option to create a passkey upon logging in, find it in the PayPal settings. With the passkey enabled, you’ll log in to PayPal.com by authenticating with Touch ID or Face ID instead of providing your PayPal password.

How passkey technology works

A slide from the WWDC21 session titled "Move beyond passwords" showcasing passkey technology used to sing in to an example app with Face ID on iPhone

Passkeys are stored securely on your iPhone, iPad or Mac and they’re synchronized with end-to-end encryption across other devices via iCloud. The private key is stored locally and never leaves the device while the public key is on the server.

These cryptographic keys are virtually impossible to crack. They cannot be easily phished like password can via brute-force attackd. Also, passkeys don’t leak in server breaches and cannot be reused or used on non-authenticated devices.

With this technology, you can even sign in to a web app on your computer provided you’ve already saved a passkey on your iPhone.

When will the PayPal app use passkeys?

Passkey support is coming to the mobile PayPal app [ App Store link ] in early 2023.

When will PayPal support passkeys in other countries?

PayPal will expand passkey support to additional countries in early 2023.

When will PayPal support passkeys on other platforms?

PayPal will introduce passkey support on other platforms as soon as they do the necessary plumbing work and implement support for the technology. Google, for example, already supports passkeys in Android and Chrome .

Microsoft is working on adding passkey support to Windows in the near future.

Your PayPal payments on iPhone and Android just got more secure

PayPal's passkeys arrive in the UK to add new layer of security to iOS and Android app

PayPal Passkeys on iPhone

PayPal is introducing an added layer of security to its iOS and Android app in the UK.

Already available Stateside, PayPal's passkeys support enables the app to be opened and accessed using biometric verification or a device password, rather than a user's PayPal password. This makes it quicker to pay for items or see account details, as well as ensuring that your money is safe even if a password is compromised.

Passkeys are an industry-recognised standard that are designed to replace passwords entirely and have been adopted by other services and brands, such as Apple which baked support into iOS 16 last year .

They use "cryptographic key pairs" that work with a number of different verification methods, including fingerprint scanning, facial recognition, a PIN or a pattern, to ensure a device cannot be unlocked or used without the correct digital credentials. Passkeys are also heavily encrypted, so are highly protected from phishing attacks or scams.

The standard was created by the FIDO Alliance , of which PayPal is a founding member, and this and Apple 's support is only the start of it. Eventually, we might be able to ditch passwords entirely.

PayPal's passkeys functionality will be rolled out to all UK users on Apple and Android devices in "the coming weeks". It'll be easy to sign up for as long as you have iOS 16, iPadOS 16.1, or macOS Ventura or later. Google device owners will need to have Android 9 or above.

On iPhone or another eligible Apple device, users just need to log into the PayPal website using a Safari browser, which will then give the option to create a passkey. This will then just need to be verified using Face ID or Touch ID. The passkey will be securely synced with the user's iCloud keychain.

Get the latest news, reviews, deals and buying guides on gorgeous tech, home and active products straight to your inbox.

On Android, the user must head to the PayPal site via the Chrome browser. This will also give the option to create a passkey, and offer a verification method.

Once created, even the PayPal password should no longer be needed to log in and out of your account.

As passkeys operate on a universal standard, it is hoped that they will be able to be transferred from one device to another in future. Just don't forget your passwords quite yet.

Completed Apple Pay checkout integration

  • Countries: Australia, Austria, Belgium, Bulgaria, Canada, China, Cyprus, Czech Republic, Denmark, Estonia, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Hungary, Ireland, Italy, Latvia, Liechtenstein, Lithuania, Luxembourg, Malta, Netherlands, Norway, Poland, Portugal, Romania, Slovakia, Slovenia, Spain, Sweden, United States, United Kingdom
  • Currencies: AUD , BRL , CAD , CHF , CZK , DKK , EUR , GBP , HKD , HUF , ILS , JPY , MXN , NOK , NZD , PHP , PLN , SEK , SGD , THB , TWD , USD

Tip: If you want to integrate additional methods of accepting payment beyond Apple Pay, visit our Advanced Checkout guide for additional integration choices.

How it works

The Apple Pay button shows up on your website when a customer uses the Safari web browser on an eligible device.

When your buyer selects the Apple Pay button:

  • Your website shows the buyer a payment sheet.
  • The buyer confirms the purchase details, such as the shipping address and payment method.
  • The buyer authorizes the purchase on the payment sheet.

The payment sheet helps streamline the checkout process by showing the customer the information needed to make the payment.

Payment sheets can show the user's name, address, shipping information, and email address. You can customize this payment sheet to include the user details and payment information you need for your Apple Pay integration.

Visit this site for more details about Apple Pay's compatibility.

  • macOS 10.14.1 and later.
  • iOS 12.1 and later.

Currently supports Apple Pay one-time payments with the buyer present.

  • Review Apple's terms and conditions for the Apple Pay platform.
  • See Apple's developer terms for more information.

Get up and running in GitHub Codespaces

GitHub Codespaces are cloud-based development environments where you can code and test your PayPal integrations. Learn more

1. Set up your sandbox account to accept Apple Pay

Before you can accept Apple Pay on your website, verify that your sandbox business account supports Apple Pay. Use the PayPal Developer Dashboard to set up your sandbox account to accept Apple Pay.

  • Log into the PayPal Developer Dashboard and go to your sandbox account.
  • Go to Apps & Credentials .
  • Make sure you are in the PayPal sandbox environment by selecting Sandbox at the top.
  • Select or create an app.
  • Scroll down to Features and check if Apple Pay is enabled. If Apple Pay isn't enabled, select the Apple Pay checkbox and select the "Save" link to enable Apple Pay.

If you created a sandbox business account through sandbox.paypal.com , and the Apple Pay status for the account shows as disabled, complete the sandbox onboarding steps to enable Apple Pay.

Tip: When your integration is ready to go live, read the Go live section for details about the additional steps needed for Apple Pay onboarding.

2. Getting started in your testing environment

Before you develop your Apple Pay on the Web integration, you need to complete Get started to set up your PayPal account, client ID, and sandbox emails for testing.

  • Download and host the domain association file for your sandbox environment.
  • Register your sandbox domain.
  • Create an Apple Pay sandbox account for testing. You don't need an Apple developer account to go live.

Important: You need to verify any domain names that you want to show an Apple Pay button. Apple rejects payments from unverified domains. The Apple Pay payment method won't work if the domain isn't registered.

Download and host sandbox domain association file

  • Download the domain association file for your sandbox environment.
  • Host the file on your test environment at /.well-known/apple-developer-merchantid-domain-association.

Register your sandbox domains

  • Go to your PayPal Developer Dashboard.
  • Register all high-level domains and subdomains that show the Apple Pay button, such as businessexample.com and checkout.businessexample.com.
  • After the domains and subdomains are registered, you can test the Apple Pay buttons after you register the domains and subdomains.

Create Apple Pay sandbox account

Create an Apple Pay sandbox account on the Apple Developer website to get a test wallet and test cards to test your Apple Pay integration.

If you already have an Apple sandbox account, you can use that account and move on to the next step.

  • Create an Apple developer account .
  • Create an Apple sandbox account .
  • Get test cards from your Apple sandbox account.

3. Integrate Apple Pay checkout

Follow this integration process to add Apple Pay as a checkout option, customize the payment experience, and process payments.

Important: You can find a complete example in the GitHub repo .

Call the Orders API

To accept Apple Pay directly on your website, create API endpoints on your server that communicate with the PayPal Orders V2 API . These endpoints can create an order, authorize payment, and capture payment for an order.

Server-side example (Node.js)

The following example uses the PayPal Orders V2 API to add routes to an Express server for creating orders and capturing payments.

  • paypal-api.js

4. Set up your Apple Pay button

You need to Integrate with the Apple Pay JavaScript SDK and PayPal JavaScript SDK to add Apple Pay to your site.

Integrate PayPal JavaScript SDK

Use this script to integrate with the PayPal JavaScript SDK:

Include applepay in the components list.

Integrate Apple JavaScript SDK

Use this script to integrate with the Apple JavaScript SDK:

PayPal's Apple Pay component interacts with your JavaScript code in 4 areas:

  • Checking merchant eligibility for Apple Pay: paypal.Applepay().config() .
  • Creating an Apple Pay session.
  • Handling the onvalidatemerchant callback: paypal.Applepay().validateMerchant() .
  • Handling the onpaymentauthorized callback: paypal.Applepay().confirmOrder() .

Before you show the Apple Pay button, make sure that you can create an Apple Pay instance and that the device can make an Apple Pay payment.

Use ApplePaySession.canMakePayments to check if the device can make Apple Pay payments.

Tip: When testing, you need to be logged into the iCloud account for your testing environment. Testing in the sandbox requires you to log into an iTunes Connect sandbox tester account , which you can create with an Apple Developer account . When you test in a live environment, log into a live iCloud account.

Check for device and merchant eligibility before setting up the Apple Pay button.

To check eligibility, use the PayPal JavaScript SDK API paypal.Applepay().config() .

Tip: You can find more details on how to set up the Apple Pay button in Apple's developer documentation .

5. Create Apple Pay session

The ApplePaySession object manages the Apple Pay payment process on the web. Create a new ApplePaySession each time a buyer explicitly requests a payment, such as inside an onclick event. If you don't create an ApplePaySession each time, you get a "Must create a new ApplePaySession from a user gesture handler" JavaScript exception. For more information about this error, visit Apple's Creating an Apple Pay Session page.

For each ApplePaySession , create an ApplePayPaymentRequest object, which includes information about payment processing capabilities, the payment amount, and shipping information.

The response object of the PayPal JavaScript SDK API paypal.Applepay().config() provides the following parameters in the ApplePayPaymentRequest object:

  • countryCode
  • merchantCapabilities
  • supportedNetworks

Include the new ApplePaySession inside a gesture handler, such as an onclick event or an addEventListener click handler.

Creating an ApplePaySession object throws a JavaScript exception if any of the following occurs:

  • Any Apple Pay JavaScript API is called from an insecure page that doesn't use https .
  • An incorrect payment request is passed. Payment requests are incorrect if they contain missing, unknown or invalid properties, or if the total amount is negative.

onvalidatemerchant callback

Use paypal.Applepay().validateMerchant() in the onvalidatemerchant callback to create a validated Apple Pay session object:

onpaymentauthorized callback

Safari calls the  onpaymentauthorized  callback with an  event  object. The event object passes a  token  which you need to send to PayPal to confirm the order.

Capture the order using the PayPal Orders V2 API . Use paypal.Applepay().confirmOrder() to send the orderID , the Apple Pay token, billing contact details, and confirm the order.

6. Show the payment sheet

After you have created the Apple Pay session and added the callbacks, call the session.begin  method to show the payment sheet. You can only call the  begin  method when a buyer explicitly requests a payment, such as inside an  onclick  event. The begin method throws a JavaScript exception if the buyer does not explicitly request the action:

After the buyer starts a payment in the browser, they use their Apple device to authorize the payment.

Customize payment

Customize the payment experience using the Apple Pay JavaScript SDK .

Per Apple's development guidelines, your Apple Pay integration needs to follow these rules:

  • The last step of an Apple Pay transaction should be when the buyer uses the payment sheet to confirm the payment.
  • Don't ask the buyer to complete additional confirmation after they use the Apple Pay payment sheet to confirm the payment.
  • Don't allow changes to the order after the buyer confirms the payment on the Apple Pay payment sheet.

The commonly used customizations for Apple Pay are:

7. Test your integration

Test your Apple Pay integration in the PayPal sandbox and production environments to ensure that your app works correctly.

Use your personal sandbox login information during checkout to complete a payment using Apple Pay. Then, log into the sandbox site sandbox.paypal.com to see that the money has moved into your account.

  • Open your test page with the Safari web browser on an iOS device or computer.
  • Get a test card from your Apple sandbox account.
  • Add the test card to your Apple Wallet on your iOS device or by using the Safari browser on the web.
  • Tap the Apple Pay button to open a pop-up with the Apple Pay payment sheet.
  • Make a payment using the Apple Pay payment sheet.
  • If you have an additional confirmation page on your merchant website, continue to confirm the payment.
  • Log in to your merchant account and continue to your confirmation page to confirm that the money you used for payment showed up in the account.

Make Apple Pay available to buyers using your website or app.

Important: Before going live, complete production onboarding to process Apple Pay payments with your live PayPal account.

Live environment

If you're a new merchant, sign up for a PayPal business account .

Use your personal production login information during checkout to complete an Apple Pay transaction. Then log into paypal.com to see the money move out of your account.

Getting started in your live environment

Verify any domain names in your live environment that will show an Apple Pay button. Apple Pay transactions only work on a domain and site registered to you.

  • Download and host the domain association file for your live environment.
  • Register your live domain on your PayPal Developer Dashboard.

Important: The Apple Pay payment method won't work if the domain and site aren't registered. The merchant that owns the domain is responsible for registering that domain.

Prerequisites

Enable Apple Pay for your live account:

  • Log into the PayPal Developer Dashboard with your live PayPal account.
  • Select the Sandbox/Live toggle so it shows Live .
  • Scroll down to Features .
  • Select the Apple Pay checkbox and select the Save link.

Create an app:

  • Create an app similar to what you created in the sandbox. You don't need to log into a separate test account.

Download and host live domain association file

Host a domain association file for each high-level domain and subdomain that show the Apple Pay button.

  • Download the domain association file for your live environment.
  • https://subdomain.example.com/.well-known/apple-developer-merchantid-domain-association

Note: Remove the file extension from the domain association file when you host it on your server.

Register your live domain on PayPal

Add all high-level domains that show the Apple Pay button.

  • Select your app.
  • Scroll down to Features > Accept payments > Advanced Credit and Debit Card Payments .
  • Check if Apple Pay is enabled. If Apple Pay isn't enabled, select the Apple Pay checkbox and select the Save link to enable Apple Pay.
  • Select the Manage link in the Apple Pay section.
  • Select Add Domain and enter your domain name.
  • Select Register Domain . If registration fails, check that the domain association file is live and saved to the right place on your live site.

After your domain is registered:

  • The domain appears under Domains registered with Apple Pay .
  • Buyers can make payments using the Apple Pay button on the registered website.

Testing in your live environment

When testing a purchase in production, consider:

  • The business account receiving money can't also make the purchase.
  • If you create a personal account with the same information as the business account, those accounts might experience restrictions.

How to test Apple Pay payments in a live environment:

  • Open your test page with Safari on iOS or desktop.
  • Select the Apple Pay button to open a pop-up with the Apple Pay payment sheet.
  • Proceed with the Apple Pay checkout transaction.
  • If you have an additional confirmation page on your merchant website, confirm the payment.
  • Log in to your merchant account and confirm that the money has moved into that account.

Troubleshoot your integration

Make sure that there are no browser console warnings or errors. The JavaScript SDK configuration attributes have distinct validation checks for input formatting and values.

If the validation fails, the web browser's developer console shows warning messages that say which property is incorrect and what you need to do to address the issue. The library generally attempts to revert to the safe default values if missing or incorrect inputs exist.

Next steps & customizations

Get started testing, add security to your checkout experience or create customizations for your audience.

Add PayPal payment buttons and customized card fields.

Safari-PayPal problem (new 2018)

I can log in to my PayPal account when using Safari, however have been unable to complete online purchases (e.g. ebay, others) through PayPal since the beginning of the year.

There are no issues when using Google Chrome.

Thank you for any assistance.

I'm having this issue as well in Safari 11.0.3. When I test my paypal purchase buttons and links in Safari, I test them not logged into my paypal account, as most customers visiting my site won't initially be logged in. When I click the paypal button or link, Safari leaves my site and starts to load paypal,—I see PayPal, Inc. as the name of the browser tab— but the page stays white and never finishes loading.

As Mosabon suggested, if I login to paypal in a separate tab and then click the paypal button on my site, it opens the link successfully, but customers will not know to do this, and if I tell them, they may decide that it's too much trouble.

I don't think this is an issue with all types of paypal buttons/links, only the types that require the customer to have a paypal account—in my case, a Subscription button/link. But Safari is the only browser that seems to have this issue at all. I've tested my paypal subscription buttons/links in Chrome and Firefox, and they work appropriately—the paypal purchase page opens and the customer can sign into paypal (or create a paypal account) there if they choose to purchase.

Apple, please advise on a fix. This is a huge issue for anyone that processes payments via paypal.

Thanks so much!

What happens when you try? Is it due to a failure to log in? Can you log in to PayPal directly, to check your balance (for example)?

Are you using any non-Apple "anti-virus" / "cleaning" / "Internet security" junk, anything at all in those broad categories of useless garbage? Needless to say a lot of things won't work if you do.

You'll probably need to contact PayPal for help.

I have the same issue but with other shops: Checking out and being redirected to PayPal.com Safari stays and does not show a PayPal login page (or what ever), only the circle is spinning.

I could figure out a workaround: open a new tab and login in to PayPal manually, then go back to the shop and check out again: now the paying process worked for me.

I think it depends on Apples new security tracking feature coming with the latest Safari version.
