11 Best Things To Do in Ottawa

Updated Feb. 12, 2021

Ottawa was designed with tourists in mind: There's plenty to see and do, and everything is just a short walk away. First off, there are two attractions that you really can't avoid: touring Parliament Hill and strolling along the Rideau Canal (both of

Rideau Canal Rideau Canal free

Snaking its way through the center of Ottawa, the Rideau Canal is one of the city's most historic attractions. This 125-mile waterway was originally constructed between 1826 and 1832 to create a secure supply and communications route between Montreal , Québec, and Kingston, Ontario – roughly 120 miles southwest of the capital. It's also a UNESCO World Heritage site and one of the city's most beloved features.

During the summer, you'll find the Rideau Canal filled with boats (both private and commercial) and the paved pathways surrounding it crowded with walkers, runners and bicyclists. If you'd like to tour the canal by boat, consider signing up for a trip with Rideau Canal Cruises . Cruises, which take visitors from Chateau Laurier to Dow's Lake (round trip), typically last 90 minutes and take visitors past nearly 30 sights along the canal. You can also borrow a bike from RentABike for CA$10 (around $8) an hour. As the temperatures begin to drop, the canal transforms into the world's largest skating rink, spanning 4.8 miles and featuring a surface area equivalent to 90 Olympic-sized hockey rinks. It's also lined with stands selling hot chocolate and soup, as well as heated huts in case you need a break from the cold.

ByWard Market ByWard Market free

Sitting in the heart of downtown Ottawa, the beloved ByWard Market is one of the country's oldest and largest public markets. Throughout the year, you'll find local vendors selling everything from souvenir trinkets to maple sugar candy to handmade cold-weather necessities like hats and mittens. This is the ideal place for fresh produce or a cheap meal on-the-go; during the summer, outdoor stalls sell local favorites like poutine (french fries topped with cheese curds and gravy) and BeaverTails (fried dough covered in everything from chocolate to cheese). Surrounding the main market building – home to the Moulin de Provence Bakery, a favorite snack stop of President Obama – are numerous boutiques, restaurants and nightlife spots. Don't worry if you're visiting in the winter – those same yummy stalls stay open, but they just move indoors.

Most recent visitors agreed that you have to stop by this market during your stay and advised setting aside several hours to explore the vendors and surrounding businesses (reviewers were especially fond of the pubs).

Canadian War Museum Canadian War Museum

Perched on the steep slopes framing the Ottawa River, the Canadian War Museum pays homage to Canada's long and violent military history, including its involvement in the French and Indian War and both World Wars I and II. Designed by Raymond Moriyama, one of the thousands of Japanese-Canadians imprisoned during World War II, this stoic museum houses remnants from Canada's numerous military endeavors, many of which resulted in tragedy. Among the museum's more than 3 million artifacts, it houses artillery, uniforms, medals, documents, sound and visual recordings and rare vehicles. It also showcases temporary interactive exhibitions, such as a recent display that told the story of WWI air combat though a graphic novel presentation.

Recent visitors gushed about the museum, recommending that future travelers reserve at least half a day (or more, if you're a history buff) to tour the moving exhibits. Beyond the artifacts and informative displays, the museum won favor with reviewers for its thoughtful layout and design. Others added that kids were as captivated by the museum as adults.

Parliament Hill Parliament Hill free

Acting as the anchor of downtown Ottawa, these three neo-Gothic structures are hard to miss. Like its mother country – England – Canada is governed by a parliamentary democracy, and it is here on the Hill that decisions are made on how to run the country. But just like the city itself, the Parliament buildings put tourists on a pedestal, catering to their whims with free guided tours, concerts, cultural exhibitions and even a seasonal after-hours sound and light show. Recent travelers said visiting Parliament Hill is an experience you can't miss, with many saying that walking around the palatial buildings felt like taking a step back in time. The knowledgeable guides were another point of praise for reviewers.

Several areas are open to the public, the most notable being the Centre Block. From here, you can head upward to the observation deck of the Peace Tower for a bird's-eye view of the city (the highlight for many recent visitors), or pay tribute to Canadians killed during military service in the Memorial Chamber (tours of these areas are self-guided). On the central lawn, you can observe the vibrant Changing of the Guard ceremony, which occurs every day in summer (June through August) at 10 a.m. To the north is the octagonal Library of Parliament, with ornate galleries and colorful windows that shelter hundreds of priceless books. Recent visitors agreed that the Centre Block and the Library of Parliament are well worth a visit.

National Gallery of Canada National Gallery of Canada

Facing Parliament Hill in downtown Ottawa, the National Gallery of Canada is a must for all art aficionados. This magnificent glass structure – easily recognized by the gargantuan spider sculpture at its entrance – houses works from heavyweights like da Vinci, Michelangelo and Picasso, along with indigenous and contemporary pieces . You'll also find some works by famous Canadian artists like Joseph Légaré and Antoine Plamondon, among many others. There are also a host of renowned temporary exhibits each year.

Recent visitors said they were as impressed with the building as they were the art, with many describing the facility as an "architectural wonder." Others were pleased without the variety of mediums on display, calling the gallery's permanent collection encyclopedic.

Gatineau Park Gatineau Park free

When you need a break from the city, head to Gatineau Park. Located just 15 minutes from downtown Ottawa, this nearly 90,000-acre park offers a variety of year-round activities, including swimming, hiking, biking, camping, cross-country skiing and snowshoeing, in addition to heritage sites and nature interpretation. Among the standout attractions is the Mackenzie King Estate, which was constructed in 1903 by Canada's 10th prime minister, William Lyon Mackenzie King. You can explore the wooded paths surrounding the estate, peek into its restored cottages (which also feature interactive exhibits) or even stop into the Mackenzie King Tearoom for a spot of tea.

Recent visitors raved about Gatineau Park, calling it a national treasure and a peaceful oasis. Reviewers were particularly fond of the park's many scenic lookouts (especially the popular Champlain Lookout, which offers a bird's-eye view from the Gatineau Hills over the Ottawa Valley). From the lookouts, you can explore connecting hiking trails, such as the path that surrounds Pink Lake, another popular lookout spot in the park.

Canadian Museum of Nature Canadian Museum of Nature

Housing more than 10 million specimens, the Canadian Museum of Nature showcases 4 billion years of Earth history. Recent visitors agreed this is a must-see, especially if you're traveling with children, thanks to all of the museum's hands-on exhibits. Here, you'll learn more about prehistoric fossils, insects, wildlife and more. Start out in the Mammal Gallery, where you'll view dioramic displays on Canadian animals, then head over to the Bird Gallery to see the largest collection of Canadian birds in the world.

Sitting southwest of downtown Ottawa near Jack Purcell Park, the Canadian Museum of Nature welcomes visitors from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. every day during the summer and every day (except Monday) from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. during the winter. On Thursdays throughout the year and summer Fridays, the museum stays open until 8 p.m. and offers free admission from 5 to 8 p.m. General admission costs CA$13.50 (about $10) for adults and CA$9.50 (around $7) for children ages 3 to 12 (special exhibitions are not included in general admission). You'll find plenty of parking near the museum, but if you don't have your own set of wheels, several OC Transpo routes can drop you off within a block of the museum. Or, if you'd rather use your own two feet, you'll find that the facility is about a 20-minute walk from  Parliament Hill . For more information, check out the official website .

Canada Aviation and Space Museum Canada Aviation and Space Museum

The Canada Aviation and Space Museum is home to the country's most comprehensive collection of vintage aircraft, which includes more than 130 artifacts and aircraft from both military and civil service. The main exhibit hall – known as the "Walkway of Time" – follows Canadian aviation developments from the start of the 20th century through to the present day and features both authentic planes and replicas of the most influential aircraft. You can even book a sightseeing flight over Ottawa in a Waco UPF-7, a vintage, open-cockpit biplane that dates back to 1939. The museum also offers seasonal sightseeing flights in a Cessna aircraft.

Recent visitors who self-identified as aviation nuts raved about the museum's collection and its exhibits. But even reviewers who said they had only a passing interest in aircraft said the museum was engaging and fascinating, especially for kids. Travelers suggested setting aside several hours to tour the museum's hands-on exhibits.

Sitting across the street from the National Gallery of Canada , this impressive church is the oldest in the city as well as a Canadian national historic site and the seat of Ottawa's Catholic archbishop. While it may seem a little daunting from the outside, recent visitors say that you shouldn't be deterred from going inside.

When it comes to brushing up on Ottawa's history, there's no better place than the Bytown Museum. Housed in what was once the commissariat for food and materials during the construction of the Rideau Canal , Ottawa's oldest stone building now pays tribute to the city's canal builder, Lieutenant-Colonel John By. Exhibits feature artifacts from early Ottawa – formerly known as Bytown – including period rooms and household items from the late 19th century.

Recent visitors said though Bytown is small, it's well worth a look. Other veteran tourists strongly recommended renting an audio guide (offered by the museum at no additional cost) to better understand the exhibits.

Canadian Museum of History Canadian Museum of History

Spread across four floors and nearly 300,000 square feet, the Canadian Museum of History (formerly the Canadian Museum of Civilization) is a behemoth. Welcoming more than 1.2 million people annually, it's also one of the country's most-visited museums. And it's easy to see why: Not only does the museum house artifacts and exhibits that detail 20,000 years of human history, it's also home to the Canadian Children's Museum and an Imax theater, CINÉ+. Among the museum's standout attractions are its collection of totem poles in its First Peoples Hall exhibition and its life-sized recreations of Canadian settlements over the past 1,000 years.

Recent visitors marveled at the building itself and praised the museum's vast collection of totem poles. Reviewers also appreciated that the children's museum offered plenty of hands-on activities for little ones (though some griped that the general museum admission does not include access to the children's museum or CINÉ+).

'Kicked out of Chinatown': The backstory of Ottawa's two competing Asian night markets

The Chinatown Night Market and Asian Fest Night Market go head-to-head with the whiff of bad blood in the air.

How nervous was Simon Huang when he staged Ottawa Asian Fest Night Market at Tanger Outlets Ottawa almost a year ago?

“Very,” he says. Nor was he alone.

After changing venues repeatedly since it launched in 2014, Huang’s event moved from Ottawa’s downtown to a western suburban mall’s parking lot. Street-food vendors coming from Toronto to Kanata thought they would be “in the middle of nowhere,” far from public transportation and potential customers, Huang says.

“Everybody was worried that nobody was going to show up,” he says.

Surprise. The event drew, as it had previously elsewhere, more than 20,000 people. Half of its 40 or so vendors ran out of food on Saturday, the second of the event’s three days, and had nothing left to sell on Sunday. Tanger mall visitors were seeking parking in neighbouring lots and cars backed up until the Queensway exit, Huang says.

“We went beyond our expectations. We didn’t expect that many people to show up.”

Adding to his jitters a year ago was the fact that another Asian night market was happening simultaneously, in Chinatown, Ottawa’s historic nexus for Asian culture, where Huang’s event had previously taken place before the pandemic.

The Ottawa Chinatown Night Market and Huang’s Ottawa Asian Fest Night Market went head to head in 2022 and 2023, and they’ll do so again this weekend.

With near-perfect weather in the forecast, the two events — one downtown, the other suburban — could draw a combined 50,000 people or more to sample Asian street food from dozens of vendors, both out-of-town and local, and take in live entertainment at events, which take place all day Saturday and Sunday, despite being called “night markets.”

However, the two events will take place with the whiff of bad blood in the air.

The key players behind each night market have different versions of what transpired that led to the fracture, and negotiations between both sides to bring everyone together in Chinatown failed.

Then, this week, Huang’s event announced that it would run eight free shuttle buses from a Dalhousie Street location to bring downtowners to the Tanger mall night market.

“That doesn’t sit well with me,” says Ottawa Coun. Ariel Troster, whose Somerset Ward includes Chinatown.

“Booking buses to directly compete with Chinatown, it seems nakedly ambitious and just really unfair to the local businesses downtown that are working so hard to put on an event,” Troster says in an interview. “We have plenty of people who live in Kanata and plenty of people who live downtown and there’s plenty of room for both events. They shouldn’t be competing directly with each other.”

Huang disagreed. “That’s so silly,” he responded in an interview. “I don’t know how you feel threatened by one school bus… They’re making a big deal out of something that’s not there.”

Before the pandemic, there was only one Asian night market — the one organized by Huang — in Ottawa.

This year, his event marks its 10th anniversary. The 2014 event was a day-long, Lunar New Year gathering that drew about 2,000 people to the EY Centre.

“Surprisingly, it went pretty well,” says Huang, who now owns two Dao Bake & Sip Cafés and three Tealive teashops in Ottawa, but who was a federal public servant 10 years ago. One of his Tealive stores is in Chinatown.

Asian Fest’s much larger sequels in 2015 and 2016 were full weekends in Lansdowne Park. Huang’s event then relocated to Chinatown, under the auspices of the Chinatown BIA. The night market flourished there in 2017, 2018 and 2019. The event was cancelled in 2020 and 2021 due to COVID-19.

Then, in 2022, the night-market beef began.

“Nobody really knows the backstory about why there are two night markets,” says Huang. “People think we’re the bad one, that we’re the one that left Chinatown.

“We’re the ones that got kicked out of Chinatown.”

Yukang Li, the Chinatown BIA’s executive director, says that in the fall of 2021, he emailed Huang repeatedly about bringing his night market back to Chinatown in 2022. “I didn’t get a response, and then I had to seek another organizer who was capable of doing this job,” Li says.

Huang, meanwhile, says that in the spring of 2022, he started planning to hold his night market in Chinatown, only to find out that “Chinatown was using another company from Toronto to organize their own night market,” he says. “We were a little baffled.”

Huang wound up staging his Ottawa Asian Fest Night Market on Sparks Street in 2022, on the same weekend as the first Ottawa Chinatown Night Market on Somerset Street West.

Li thought that having the two events competing in such close proximity was regrettable.

“That was the situation neither party would want to see,” he says. “Sparks Street is so close to Chinatown. Two similar events on the same weekend does not help with either.” Li adds that he had a hard time finding enough vendors in 2022.

In 2023, the two sides tried to negotiate holding both events in Chinatown, one after the other, but they couldn’t find an agreement. Once again, both night markets took place on the same weekend, one in Kanata and the other in Chinatown.

In a March 2023 email shared with this newspaper, Li lamented that in 2022, he switched his dates more than once to avoid a conflict, only to have Huang revise his dates so that the night markets would compete.

Huang in an interview says the availability of vendors from Toronto helps to dictate when night markets in Ottawa can happen.

“We draw from the same vendor pool,” he says.

There are limited dates when the vendors can come to Ottawa, as they are on a circuit of events — akin to an Asian version of the Ribfest circuit, he explains. Huang adds that he has agreements with Toronto events, such as the Taste of Asia at the end of June — which attracts 180,000 people — not to conflict with them.

Meanwhile, Huang is also staging a second Ottawa Asian Fest Night Market this summer, from July 19 to 21, at Lansdowne Park.

In a March 2023 email, Li told Huang he was welcome to hold another night market in Chinatown, in addition to the Ottawa Chinatown Night Market.

“We want to see as many community events as possible,” Li says in an interview. “I told Simon that if he wanted to host a night market in Chinatown, he’s very welcome. The door is open and the BIA would still provide him the same support.”

Huang says he considered returning to Chinatown, wanting to “come together and do what’s good for the Asian community.”

The only condition, he says, was that he keep the event under his Ottawa Asian Fest brand.

“They said, ‘No, thank you.’ They want to do it as a BIA event. And that was it. We parted our ways.”

The email correspondence show that four conditions, proposed by Huang, were on the table.

The first was that Ottawa Asian Fest would be the only organizer of night markets in Chinatown, with the BIA as a “community partner.” Li responded that the June 2023 Chinatown night market would go ahead, with its own organizer, while Huang could “organize a night market on a later date.”

“In the long run, it is the BIA’s intention to host two night markets per year, which shall not compete against each other,” Li wrote.

Huang also asked to be given “the grant to be used for the festival.” Li responded that the BIA does not guarantee that the BIA could always provide financial support to event organizers. But he wrote that if the BIA and Huang could reach an agreement, “we’ll try our best to secure some funding for the night market, this year and (in) future years.

“For this year, I believe we can provide financial support to more than one night market,” Li wrote.

In an interview, Li says the current Chinatown event is funded out of a $40,000 pot that covers all community events. Huang, meanwhile, says that his event is self-sufficient and operates without receiving any grants, directing all of its vendors’ fees back into the event.

In a 2023 email, Huang proposed the event he might run in Chinatown should still be called the Chinatown Night Market, “with the title sponsor of our choosing.”

“Thank you for supporting the branding of Chinatown,” Li wrote back. “The name of Ottawa Chinatown Night Market and/or its logo will be main focus of, and displayed in, all promotional content.”

The negotiations stopped soon after that and in his last email, Huang wrote: “Well, we attempted to make peace.”

In an interview this week, Huang says the deal-breaker was that the June 2023 Chinatown Night Market took place with a different organizer.

“There was no point in us coming back,” he says. “We’ve been doing this for 10 years and we worked hard for it… We put a lot of hard work in creating our own brand and we simply don’t want to be confused by anything else.”

Now, Huang’s event bills itself as the “original Asian night market” in Ottawa, and as Ottawa’s biggest food festival. The Chinatown BIA event’s tagline is “unmatched because it is in Chinatown.”

Whatever their disagreements, Huang and Li agree that there is now, perhaps oddly, a plus to having two simultaneous Asian night markets in Ottawa.

“Having two night markets at different, faraway spots in Ottawa, we serve different audiences, I suppose,” Li says. “We provide more options for residents of different parts of the city.”

Huang says the competing, but viable, events have emerged as “mutually beneficial.

“It actually works out,” he says. “To be honest, by having two markets at the same time, in different locations… it’s actually creating more awareness of Asian culture.”

'Planet parade' 2024: How to view the astronomical event

ottawa tourism june 2023

Get ready skywatchers, another astronomical event will take place on June 3.

A planetary alignment, or a "planet parade" according to the internet, where we'll see six planets – Jupiter, Mercury, Uranus, Mars, Neptune and Saturn – grace our sky in the predawn hours, according to StarWalk.space , a stargazing and astronomical website.

How does the alignment happen?

The planets orbit the sun continuously in the solar system . The planets will slowly catch up to one another over time. Because they are all traveling along the same path, the ecliptic , as they pass Earth, it appears as though they are aligned, according to NASA . However, the alignment formation will be short-lived since each planet moves at different speeds, depending on its distance from the sun.

Where to look for the planet alignment

Looking in the eastern sky the planetary alignment will be visible almost everywhere in the Northern Hemisphere, weather permitting.

You'll need high-powered binoculars to view the majority of the planets – Mercury and Jupiter will be extremely low in the sky. Uranus will be fairly dim and Neptune will appear star-like with binoculars due to its distance from Earth. But Mars and Saturn should be visible with the naked eye.

Planet alignments aren't extremely rare, especially with two to four planets. They do occur several times each year. With five or more planets aligning, it is less common.

The last planetary alignment seen in the Northern Hemisphere was on April 8.

Profiles of the six planets on parade

With eight planets in our solar system, they all have some very interesting traits. Here's a quick look at the planets aligning on June 3:

When will the planets align again?

Here's when StarWalk.space predicts the next six- and 7-planetary alignments will happen:

◾ June 3: Six planets – Mercury, Mars, Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus and Neptune.

◾ Aug. 28: Six planets – Mercury, Mars, Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus and Neptune.

◾ Jan. 18: Six planets – Mercury, Mars, Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus and Neptune

◾ Feb. 28: Seven planets – Mercury, Venus, Mars, Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus and Neptune. (The last time all seven planets aligned was on April 8 during the total solar eclipse).

◾ Aug. 29, 2025: Six planets – Mercury, Venus, Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus and Neptune.

Cancer Horoscope for June 2024

June 21 - July 22

ottawa tourism june 2023

Monthly News from Susan Miller

Dear Reader,

Your June forecast is now posted. Susan has come down with a virulent virus and will not be able to write her normal News for the month.

Overall, June will be a wonderful month no matter what sign you are, with a new moon in Cancer on June 6 and a full moon in Capricorn on June 21. A spectacular and rare event will occur on June 2 when Jupiter will trine Pluto—a 5-star day. June is packed full with planetary activity, so be sure to check your Astrology Zone calendar, which is now priced at $13.50—50% off—available exclusively on Astrologyzone.com.

Your June 2024 Horoscope for Cancer

Last month on May 25, Gemini was crowned the celestial favorite because Jupiter moved into Gemini for a full year. It takes this planet of good fortune 12 years to revolve around the Sun, so as a Cancer, you are next in line to curry favor from Jupiter. You will have your turn at your Emerald Year next year from June 9, 2025, to June 30, 2026.

To make the most of your coming year, which will be here before you know it, you will need to get ready. A period this special only comes around every 12 years, so as an example, if you live to 96, you will only get eight of these sparkling years in a lifetime. Ancient astrologers felt it was important to prepare, so for now the biggest changes that will occur in 2024 and early 2025 will emanate within you, not from the outside in.

By June of next year, you will need to have all your priorities in mind and in their order of importance. The universe will bring you an array of opportunities during the intervening months, both professionally and personally. You will need to be decisive and choose the ones with the greatest long-range potential that feed and nourish your soul.

For now, and in the 12 months ahead (June 2024 to June 2025), you will have a more private, less public, persona. Much of your time will be spent behind the scenes building strategies for your own life. This could become an important part of your job description—deciding on the best tactics and overall strategy to put in place to grow the company (or your business) in the months and years ahead.
