Nirvana: Everything you need to know

Who are Nirvana? Why were they called Nirvana? And what's that smiley face all about? We find out...

nirvana tour names

Nirvana are one of the biggest and most influential bands in music history. Formed in Seattle in 1987, they pretty much single-handedly catapulted alternative music into the mainstream when their second album, Nevermind , took the music industry by surprise and turned popular culture on its head on its release in 1991. Their mix of dirgey, down-tuned rock’n’roll, punk rock spirit and abstract lyrics originally captured the imagination of the increasingly disaffected Generation X youth, but continues to shape and inform rock music today.

But who are Nirvana? How did they start out? What are their biggest songs? What is nirvana, anyway? We bring you everything you need to know about Seattle’s favourite sons.

Who were the members of Nirvana?

In their best-known formation, Nirvana was made up of singer and guitarist Kurt Cobain , drummer Dave Grohl and bassist Krist Novoselic . Cobain and Novoselic met at high school in Aberdeen, Washington, where the band was originally based.

Cobain was Nirvana’s chief songwriter, wrote all their lyrics and almost all of their music – though Grohl and Novoselic both contributed to Nirvana’s music, as on Aneurysm , which was a co-write by all members of the band. Grohl also wrote the Heart-Shaped Box B-side Marigold himself.

When did Dave Grohl join Nirvana?

Dave Grohl joined Nirvana in 1990, after the band had already recorded their debut album, Bleach . When Grohl’s first band, Scream , suddenly split up mid-tour in 1990, Grohl – who had quit high school to follow a career in music – called friend and Melvins frontman Buzz Osborne for advice on what his next move should be. Osborne passed Cobain and Novoselic’s phone numbers on to Grohl, and the rest, as they say, is history. Novoselic later commented that “We knew in two minutes that he was the right drummer”.

Who was the first drummer in Nirvana?

Chad Channing is widely accepted as Nirvana’s first “official” drummer, as he performed on Nirvana’s debut album, Bleach . However, there was a revolving door of drummers in Nirvana before he joined.

Bob McFadden was the first drummer to ever pick up the sticks for Nirvana, but he lasted only a month. After McFadden came Aaron Burckhard, who drifted away from the band when they moved out of Aberdeen. At this point, the band started jamming with Melvins drummer Dale Crover, who appeared on Nirvana’s first demos in 1988. Crover left shortly after, at which point Dave Foster joined – until he got sent to jail a few months later. It was at this point that a mutual friend introduced them to Channing, who stuck around long enough to make it through the Bleach sessions. However, Cobain and Novoselic were left cold by Channing’s drumming abilities throughout the sessions. Amid growing frustrations at not being allowed to contribute to the songwriting process, Channing left. He was briefly replaced by Mudhoney drummer Dan Peters, then Dale Crover again, before Grohl joined the ranks.

Why were they called Nirvana?

Cobain has said Nirvana settled on that name because he “wanted a name that was kind of beautiful or nice and pretty instead of a mean, raunchy punk name like the Angry Samoans". Before they became Nirvana, the band were known as Skid Row, Fecal Matter and Ted Ed Fred.

Nirvana were sued by a British psych-rock band of the same name over usage rights of the Nirvana name, given that they had been active under the title since 1965 – two years before Cobain was even born. The two bands eventually reached a settlement in court. The British Nirvana seized on the opportunity, though, releasing a tongue in cheek, psychedelic cover of Nirvana's hit Come As You Are as part of an ultimately unreleased Nirvana Sings Nirvana covers album .

What is the meaning of Nirvana in Buddhism?

The term nirvana in Buddhism is most commonly used to refer to the religion’s ultimate spiritual goal of attaining a state of enlightenment which releases one from the cycle of reincarnation. The term refers to the extinguishing of three fires within the self, each of which represents greed, hatred and delusion, so that one can reach peace and spiritual fulfilment. Modern interpretations suggest a “nirvana in this life” is possible dependent on a “transformed state of personality characterised by compassion, peace, deep spiritual joy and an absence of negative mental states and emotions such as doubt, worry, anxiety and fear”.

Are Nirvana grunge?

There really is no question about this: Nirvana were – and still are – the biggest grunge band on the planet. Grunge itself is a term that comes with a fair amount of contention, as its defining qualities borrowed from the ferocity of punk, the down-tuned dirge of metal and pop’s irresistible songwriting nous, which has lead some to claim grunge isn’t a genre in its own right at all, or dismiss it as a cynical marketing term. But if people tell you that Nirvana were a punk band, an alt.rock band, a pop band, you shouldn’t listen to them. Nirvana weren’t just a grunge band. Nirvana were grunge.

What is the Nirvana smiley face about?

This doodle of a yellow face on a black background, with crossed out eyes and a wobbly smile, is one of the most enduring images from Nirvana’s career, and has adorned T-shirts, mugs, key rings, beer koozies and pretty much everything else you can think of since. Legend has it it was drawn by Cobain for a flyer announcing a Nevermind album launch party in Seattle in September 1991. It’s said to have been inspired by a similar crudely drawn smiley face, which wished punters “an erotic day” from its spot on the signage at The Lusty Lady strip club – a well-known joint close to where Cobain and the rest of the Seattle scene used to hang out.

How did Kurt Cobain die?

Kurt Cobain died by suicide on April 5, 1994. He was discovered in his Seattle home with a self-inflicted gunshot wound to the head and high levels of heroin and diazepam in his system. He was survived by his wife, Courtney Love, and their daughter, Frances Bean Cobain.

What are Nirvana’s best albums?

Best is a tricky term, given its subjective nature – though of them all, Nevermind is the definitive Nirvana album, and historically the most important. Nirvana only officially recorded three albums in their time as a band: Bleach in 1989, Nevermind in 1991 and In Utero in 1993. Nevermind is by far Nirvana’s best-selling album, having sold over 10 million copies in the USA alone. In Utero comes in second with 5 million US sales under its belt, while debut album Bleach is the least popular – though has still sold 2 million copies in the US.

As well as these albums, Nirvana compilation album Incesticide has grown a huge cult appeal over the years.

What are Nirvana’s biggest songs?

Nirvana’s biggest song was the world-changing Smells Like Teen Spirit . Released on September 10, 1991, it shot straight into the Billboard top 10, and is often cited as the moment when grunge music crossed over into the mainstream.

We recently held a vote with our readers to determine the best Nirvana songs of all time . Here are their choices of Nirvana’s 15 best songs, in descending order:

Very few bands in history had the impact that the musicians in the group Nirvana had. We are talking bands and artists like Elvis Presley , Chuck Berry, and The Beatles . These were artists that changed the world. So did Nirvana . The band was formed in Aberdeen, Washington, in 1987, and their influence on the music scene, especially in the 1990s, was profound and enduring.

Nirvana was formed by lead singer and guitarist Kurt Cobain and bassist Krist Novoselic. The duo met in high school in Aberdeen and shared a passion for music, particularly punk rock. They went through a series of drummers in their early years, including Aaron Burckhard, Dale Crover, and Dave Foster, before Chad Channing joined them in 1988.

The band’s first album, Bleach , was released in 1989 on the independent label Sub Pop. Recorded for just $606.17, the album was heavily influenced by the heavy, distorted sound of the Melvins and Mudhoney, prominent bands in the Seattle music scene. While Bleach did not initially achieve widespread acclaim, it became a favorite among the local audience and is now considered a classic of the grunge genre.

The band’s major breakthrough came with their second album, Nevermind , in 1991. Dave Grohl, who joined the band in 1990, was on drums for this album. Nevermind was released by DGC Records and featured the smash hit “Smells Like Teen Spirit,” which catapulted the band to international fame. The album marked a departure from the raw sound of Bleach and showcased a more polished, accessible sound. Nevermind was a massive commercial success, eventually selling over 30 million copies worldwide.

In 1993, Nirvana released their third studio album, In Utero . This album saw the band return to a more abrasive, less polished sound, with Cobain wanting to capture the essence of their earlier music. In Utero debuted at number one on the Billboard 200 chart and included hits like “Heart-Shaped Box” and “All Apologies.”

However, despite the band’s growing success, Cobain struggled with fame and the pressures of being in the spotlight. His battles with heroin addiction and health issues were well-documented. These challenges, combined with internal band tensions, led to a tumultuous period for Nirvana . The band’s journey came to a tragic end with the death of Kurt Cobain in April 1994. His death was ruled as suicide, and it marked the end of Nirvana . Cobain’s death had a profound impact on fans and the music world, and it signaled the end of an era in rock music.

Following Nirvana’s disbandment, Novoselic pursued other musical projects and became politically active. Dave Grohl went on to form the Foo Fighters, where he achieved considerable success as the lead vocalist and guitarist.

Nirvana is remembered as one of the most influential bands of the 20th century. Their music represented the disenchanted youth of the era and was a significant factor in bringing alternative rock and grunge to the mainstream. The band’s influence on music is still felt today, with numerous bands citing Nirvana as an inspiration. Their induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2014, in their first year of eligibility, was a testament to their lasting impact on the music industry.

Kurt Cobain

Kurt Cobain, the iconic frontman of Nirvana, remains one of the most influential figures in the history of rock music. His life, marked by both remarkable talent and tragic struggles, continues to captivate fans and musicians worldwide. Kurt Donald Cobain was born in Aberdeen, Washington on February 20, 1967. His interest in music appeared early in his life, with a particular fondness for rock bands like The Beatles and, later, the punk rock scene. The divorce of his parents when he was nine years old profoundly affected him, a theme that would recur in his lyrics and interviews.

Cobain’s teenage years were turbulent, marked by frequent moves between relatives and friends. During this period, his passion for music deepened. He started playing guitar, and his musical interests expanded to include alternative rock bands. Cobain formed several bands during his late teens, none of which achieved any notable success, but these early experiences laid the groundwork for his future in music. With fame, Cobain’s personal struggles became more acute. He grappled with heroin addiction, illness, and the pressures of fame. His marriage to Courtney Love in 1992 and the birth of their daughter Frances Bean Cobain added to his complicated personal life. These struggles often found expression in his music and public appearances.

Cobain’s influence extended beyond his role as a musician. He was seen as the voice of a generation, although he was uncomfortable with this title. His approach to music and fashion, marked by a disdain for the mainstream and a preference for the raw and authentic, significantly influenced the cultural landscape of the early 1990s.

Cobain’s life came to a tragic end on April 5, 1994, when he died by suicide in his Seattle home. His death was a profound shock to the music world and his fans, leaving a legacy marked by his artistic genius and his struggles.

Krist Novoselic

Krist Novoselic is the co-founder and bassist of the legendary grunge band Nirvana. He has had a life marked by his significant music contributions and political and social activism. Born Krist Anthony Novoselic on May 16, 1965, in Compton, California, to Croatian immigrants, Novoselic spent part of his childhood in Croatia (then part of Yugoslavia) before his family settled in Aberdeen, Washington. In Aberdeen, he would eventually meet Kurt Cobain through his brother.

In the mid-1980s, Novoselic and Cobain formed Nirvana. They went through a series of drummers before Dave Grohl joined in 1990, solidifying the band’s most famous lineup.  As the bassist for Nirvana, Novoselic’s contributions were crucial to the band’s sound. His bass playing provided a solid foundation for Cobain’s raw, emotive songs. Novoselic was also involved in the songwriting process and was known for his onstage energy and presence. His work is particularly notable on tracks such as “Come as You Are,” “Lithium,” and “In Bloom.”

After Cobain’s death in 1994 and Nirvana’s subsequent dissolution, Novoselic took a step back from the forefront of the music scene. He dabbled in various musical projects, including the band Sweet 75 and later Eyes Adrift. He also collaborated with other musicians, including a brief reunion with Grohl and Pat Smear in the band Foo Fighters.

Aside from music, Novoselic is known for his political activism. He has been an advocate for electoral reform, specifically championing proportional representation. He briefly flirted with a career in politics, considering a run for Lieutenant Governor of Washington in 2004, but ultimately decided against it. Novoselic has also been involved in various social and environmental causes. In recent years, Novoselic has continued to be active in both music and political commentary. He wrote a book titled “Of Grunge and Government: Let’s Fix this Broken Democracy!” and has been a regular contributor to various publications and blogs, discussing politics and social issues.

Krist Novoselic’s life has been one of artistic influence and civic engagement. As a key figure in one of the most influential bands of the 20th century, and as an advocate for political change and social justice, his impact extends far beyond the world of grunge music. His legacy is one of a musician who used his platform to effect change and inspire thought, both through his art and his actions.

Dave Grohl joined Nirvana as the drummer in 1990 and was part of the band until its dissolution in 1994. David Eric Grohl was born on January 14, 1969, in Warren, Ohio, and raised in Springfield, Virginia. His interest in music began at a young age. He taught himself to play drums and guitar, and by his teens, he was deeply involved in the Washington D.C. area’s hardcore punk scene. Grohl cited bands like The Melvins and Bad Brains as early influences.

Grohl’s first significant band was Scream, a hardcore punk group he joined in the mid-1980s. With Scream, he recorded several albums and toured extensively, honing his skills as a drummer. When Scream disbanded, Grohl’s reputation as a talented drummer in the punk community was well-established.

In 1990, Grohl auditioned for Nirvana , which had already released their debut album Bleach . His powerful drumming style was a perfect fit for the band, led by Kurt Cobain and Krist Novoselic. Following Cobain’s death in 1994 and Nirvana’s subsequent dissolution, Grohl faced an uncertain future. He recorded a collection of songs he had written, playing almost all the instruments himself. This project turned into the first Foo Fighters album, released in 1995. The Foo Fighters, with Grohl as the lead vocalist and guitarist, achieved critical and commercial success, becoming one of the most prominent rock bands of the late 1990s and 2000s.

Grohl has been involved in numerous other musical projects. He temporarily played drums for Queens of the Stone Age on their album Songs for the Deaf (2002). He also formed the supergroup Them Crooked Vultures with Josh Homme and John Paul Jones, releasing an album in 2009.

Chad Channing

Chad Channing was Nirvana’s drummer from 1988 to 1990. He played on the band’s debut album, Bleach , contributing to tracks like “About a Girl” and “Negative Creep.” Although his time with the band was brief, his drumming laid the groundwork for Nirvana’s early sound. After leaving Nirvana, Channing played with bands like Before Cars.

Pat Smear joined Nirvana as a touring guitarist in 1993, contributing to live performances and the band’s final studio album, In Utero . Though he was not a primary songwriter, his guitar work added an extra layer to the band’s live sound. After Nirvana, Smear continued to work with Grohl, becoming a full-time member of the Foo Fighters.

Nirvana Reunion: Band To Tour With Kurt Cobain’s Cousin Claude on Vocals

Nirvana Reunion: Band To Tour With Kurt Cobain’s Cousin Claude on Vocals

The music world is buzzing with excitement. Dave Grohl announced today that Nirvana will tour and record new music for the first time in 30 years. The surviving band members Grohl and Krist Novoselic will be joined by Kurt Cobain’s cousin Claude on lead vocals.

Nirvana Reunion

The legendary band, which formed in 1987 and rose to fame in the early 1990s, has been on hiatus since the death of lead singer Kurt Cobain in 1994. Fans have been eagerly waiting for a reunion tour for many years now. Nirvana will tour the world for the next two years and will be opening for KISS on their farewell tour.

“The time was right” said Grohl. “I was hanging out with the bass player, what’s his name. We have been jamming and recording some new material. What is that guy’s name again? I can never remember it.”

Chris Selleck?

After being reminded of the original bass player’s name Grohl continued, “Yes that’s it, Chris Selleck, Thank You. Is he related to Tom Selleck? That would be really cool, I am a big fan of Magnum PI. Anyway, we felt it was time to go out on the road. We thought about me singing or Axl Rose but it didn’t seem right. Other singers we thought about were Joan Jett, Paul McCartney, Stevie Nicks and John Lydon. Actually we thought about anyone except Courtney. Then Pat Smear said what about Claude? We all looked at each other and yelled, Claude of course. We rang him up and he agreed right away.”

Nirvana Reunion: Band To Tour With Kurt Cobain’s Cousin Claude on Vocals

Claude of course is Claude Cobain, Kurt’s cousin. Nirvana guitarist Pat Smear told Madhouse News, “Kurt always said that Claude was the real talent in the family. Claude taught Kurt everything he knows about music. Claude was older and while Kurt was listening to The Monkees and Partridge Family and stuff like that, Claude turned him on to Led Zeppelin, Black Sabbath and the like. He was also the first to introduce Kurt to punk music and taught him how to write songs. Claude can shred on the guitar, sing like an angel, can bench press 300 pounds and bears a striking resemblance to Kurt. They are like identical cousins.”

Funky Claude

Claude has been in and out of prison and spends his days watching Cops and drinking rubbing alcohol. He has been working recently as Courtney Love’s butler, dog walker and chauffeur. “As soon as I got the call I told Courtney to shove it. I pulled the car over and left it on the side of the freeway with Courtney in the back. She was screaming and yelling and chased me with a baseball bat. She’s probably still there as she is quite helpless without me. I don’t know who is going to wash her soiled underpants now.”

Fans reactions were mixed. “Who the f*ck is Claude Cobain?” wrote Alan Fasano. “I love Nirvana and have been waiting for this reunion all my life but having someone sing with Nirvana just because he is Kurt’s cousin is insane. What’s next, Kurt’s neighbor’s plumber will be playing keyboards?”

noun : the final state of utmost bliss that transcends suffering, karma , and samsara and is sought especially in Buddhism through the extinction of desire and individual consciousness

As singer Kurt Cobain once explained to journalist and author Michael Azerrad in the latter’s 1993 biography Come As You Are: The Story of Nirvana , “I wanted a name that was kind of beautiful or nice and pretty instead of a mean, raunchy punk rock name … I wanted to have something different.” Prior to landing on Nirvana, the band cycled through, however briefly, other monikers such as Skid Row, Bliss, and uh, Throat Oyster. The first-known use of nirvana in English appeared in the early 1800s, coming from the Sanskrit nirvāṇa , meaning literally “act of extinguishing,” itself from nis- (“out”) and vāti (“it blows”). (Interestingly, the English word wind is distantly related to vāti and therefore nirvana as well.) From its religious origins, nirvana has developed the broader meanings of “bliss” and “heaven” as in “The resort is a skier’s and snowboarder’s nirvana.”

The Scottish variety is challenging enough, but Uilleann pipes are in a class by themselves. They are difficult to obtain, harder to maintain and nearly impossible to play. Indeed, Uilleann piping is so intimately linked with frustration and suffering that players consider themselves initiates in what approaches a religion. According to tradition, it takes “seven years’ listening, seven years’ practicing and seven years’ playing to make a piper,” but the reward is mastery of a difficult physical skill, plus the experience of creating one’s own musical nirvana. The sound is something like an oboe, something like a bassoon, and, when all the various parts are used, like several of each playing at once. Even after 21 years, though, the suffering is not over. — Michael D. Lemonick, Time , 16 Mar. 1987 By the time Nirvana recorded their performance for MTV Unplugged in November 1993, they were the biggest band in the world. Not that they looked like it. Dave Grohl in his turtleneck and ponytail, Krist Novoselic wrangling his giant, borrowed bass, Kurt Cobain struggling to act relaxed in a room filled with people who thought he was a prophet. — Mike Powell, Pitchfork , 24 Feb. 2019

The Bangles

noun : a stiff usually ornamental bracelet or anklet slipped or clasped on

Before they were the Bangles (of “Eternal Flame,” “Manic Monday,” and “Walk Like an Egyptian” fame), they were the Bangs, but upon discovery that there was already a band called The Bangs—with a copyright on the name, no less—extra letters were added. The change from Bangs to Bangles also meant that the band went from having a name of likely Scandinavian origin to one derived from the Hindi word baṅglī .

The stones in her bracelets ranged from saffron to palest yellow, but it was the bangle composed entirely of buttery golden stones with fiery orange hearts that captured Yoshi's gaze. — Maya Kaathryn Bohnhoff, Analog Science Fiction & Fact , Volume 130 (2010) The Bangles’ garage-band philosophy puts them in the company of a number of other '60s-inspired L.A. groups … but on this delightful album they avoid the revivalist trap with their solid songwriting and some of the best harmonies since the Mamas and the Papas. — Mikel Toombs, The San Diego Union-Tribune , 2 Sep. 1984

interjection : —used especially in radio and signaling to indicate that a message received will be complied with

When it comes to naming your band, nouns are the lowest of low-hanging fruit. You’ve got your Temptations, your Strawberry Alarm Clock, your Heart, your whatever a Hoobastank is. Few and far between are the bands named with an interjection . But joining Judas Priest and perhaps A-Ha is the American band Wilco , whose nom de rock-and-roll is a conflation of “will comply.”

“Wilco,” Boyden said. “Wilco. Out.” He was speaking in Naval parlance acknowledging an order. His voice was like a hundred other voices that Briggs had heard on the radio speaker at sea, and there was the same finality and the same incisiveness in that word ‘out’ that meant those voices were gone, perhaps forever. — John P. Marquand, Harper’s Magazine , Nov. 1945 Wilco. Remember the name. Or don’t. It doesn’t matter. Either way, the rootsy group from Chicago, Minneapolis and Nashville is the best new band in America, as they proved with a Saturday night set at Liberty Lunch… — Michael Corcoran, The Dallas Morning News , 20 Mar. 1995

noun : a captain in the navy in command of a squadron

Commodore is probably a modification of the Dutch word commandeur , meaning “commander,” which itself came from French, and further back from the Old French comandeor , making it once, twice, three times “commander.” According to a People magazine article by Ken Kelley from 1978, the seminal Motown band—whose hits include “Brick House,” “Nightshift,” and “Easy” —formerly known as the Jays took the name “Commodores” when choreographer and multi-instrumentalist William King “flipped open a dictionary and ran his finger down the page. ‘We lucked out,’ he laughs. ‘We almost became The Commodes .’”

Even on the lakes, where alone we had squadrons, everything, from laying the keel of the vessels to firing the last gun before the enemy surrendered, was left to the young commodores in command. — James Russell Soley, Scribner’s Magazine , February 1887 The Commodores—all six of them college graduates—run a machine: a coolly efficient, meticulously planned business that controls everything from tours to merchandising and operates according to group mottos. Of course, this business also makes hit records, and good ones. After Motown signed them in 1972, the Commodores refused any advances, held out for two years against the company’s choice of material and producers, and finally released a terrific, funk album, Machine Gun . noun : the art of harmonious bodily movement especially through expressive timed movements in response to improvised music

Sweet dreams are made of eurythmics . Who are we, humble lexicographers that we are, to disagree? The adjective eurythmic debuted in English in the late 1800s, a synonym of harmonious . After the turn of the century (consider how aerobic led to aerobics , eurythmics arose as a noun referring to a method of musical training for young people developed by Swiss composer Émile Jaques-Dalcroze in the early 20th century that involves specific body movements in response to changing rhythms and pitches. For Jaques-Dalcroze, the rhythmic movements used in eurythmics were a means of musical education, not an end in themselves or a form of dance. Nonetheless, his system is considered an important influence on 20th-century theatrical dance, especially central European and American modern dance. Eurythmics was adopted as a musical name by a duo consisting of Annie Lennox and Dave Stewart around 1980, after the breakup of their former band the Tourists.

Also important in early Soviet theater was the Anthroposophical concept of eurythmy (not to be confused with Jacques Dalcroze’s eurythmics). Both systems stress rhythmic bodily movements, but eurythmics was a system of musical education, whereas eurythmy was said to express cosmic verities. — Bernice Glazer Rosenthal, “Introduction,” The Occult in Russian and Soviet Culture (Cornell University Press, 1997) Further evidence of David Bowie’s apparently never-ending influence on contemporary rock styles was offered at the Ritz on Thursday, where the Eurythmics, the successful British techno-pop duo, made their New York debut. Consisting of the singer, songwriter and flutist Annie Lennox and the guitarist and singer David Stewart, the Eurythmics were augmented by a strong rhythm section, a keyboardist and elaborate pre-recorded sound effects. —Stephen Holden, The New York Times , 17 July 1983

noun : a rapid conjugate movement of the eyes associated especially with REM (rapid eye movement) sleep

Sweet dreams are also made of REM , short for rapid eye movement , movement of the eyes that occurs during a stage of sleep when the brain is particularly active, and when lucid dreaming often occurs. Like that of many bands, the name R.E.M. has been reported to have been chosen from the dictionary (you’re welcome!), but the band—which also considered the names “Twisted Kites” and uh, “Cans of Piss”—has denied this. In any event, the band inserted periods in their name, where most often REM is styled sans periods.

During REM sleep, neurons that permit the dream-inducing neurons to buzz with activity are themselves out of action. Normally, they are involved in attention and self-awareness. Hartmann suggests that this dormancy may explain why people remember better in their dreams than they do while awake: with the attention-paying neurons off, remote memories are unusually accessible. But once awake, some 95 percent of dreams vanish. — Sharon Begley, Newsweek , 1989 R. E. M., a Georgia band whose debut album, “Murmur” (A & M), reached the top 50 this summer, has given folk-rock a complete overhaul. R. E. M. laces its songs with folky electric guitar licks, yet turns folk-rock’s innocence upside down by pushing tempos, mumbling lyrics and breaking down folk-rock’s simple verses and choruses into a rush of melodies and images. — Jon Pareles, The New York Times , 18 Sep. 1983

Soccer Mommy

noun : a typically suburban mother who accompanies her children to their soccer games and is considered as part of a significant voting bloc or demographic group

Soccer mom is a fairly recent coinage in English, about 50-years young at the time of this writing. The first-known use came from a letter to The Argus —then a newspaper in the town of Fremont, California—signed “Soccer Mom,” a descriptor self-applied by a proud parent. Soccer mom saw extended use decades later as representing a voting bloc in US elections, and became the stage name (as Soccer Mommy) of musician Sophie Allison in 2015.

Neville wanted something that “handled” better. I wasn’t interested in how she took the curves. I wanted a soccer-mommy van. — Sherri Gardner Howell, The Knoxville News-Sentinel , 23 Apr. 2005 Soccer Mommy (Sophie Allison), an indie-rock icon and an upcoming highlight of Hopscotch, has her musical signature over pop punk and shoegaze . With her latest album “Sometimes, Forever,” Allison explores the fusion of synthesizer and noise pop, writing on her self-discovering journey with an openness toward lie and pain. — Katherine Zhong, The Chronicle (Duke University), 8 Sep. 2023

The Cardigans

noun : a usually collarless sweater or jacket that opens the full length of the center front

Cardigans ? We love them, love them, say that we love them, both the warm, fuzzy sweaters and the Swedish band whose single “Lovefool” gave the world the warm fuzzies in 1996. The garment was named after James Thomas Brudenell , 7th earl of Cardigan, who with his inherited wealth personally outfitted his military regiment with what came to be called cardigan jackets.

A gray morning, the deck wet, the iron all beaded with frost, all the longshoremen in heavy pea-jackets or cardigans, the whole ship in a bustle, and the favored first-class passengers just leaving. — Edward Everett Hale, The Brick Moon and Other Stories (Little, Brown, and Company 1899, orig. copyright 1869) When singer Nina Persson and keyboardist Lars-Olof Johansson of the Swedish band the Cardigans discuss their craft, passion fills the air. The group, which performs at sold-out shows tonight and Friday at the El Rey Theatre, takes its job seriously. “For me, being called kitsch is the worst thing we could be accused of,” says the soft-spoken Persson, addressing a misconception about the group’s goals that's so widespread it even appears in the record company’s official band biography. “We feel very sincere about what we do. We are burning with music,” Persson reaffirms. — Elysa Gardner, The Los Angeles Times , 20 Feb. 1997

noun : a fairy; specifically: a cheerful mischievous sprite

Pixies are small, humanlike creatures that make mischief; the origin of their name is officially unknown but may be related to the earlier English word puck , which refers to an evil or malicious sprite and which has been in English for over 1,000 years. The origins of the band name Pixies are more certain: as bassist Kim Deal (also of the legendary Breeders) told Spin Magazine in 2004, “Joey [Santiago, guitarist] found the band name in a dictionary. He didn’t come over here until he was seven, so some words he still had trouble with. It’s weird because he’s fluent in English. But every now and then a word creeps up, so he scans the dictionary.” A wonderful idea, if we say so ourselves!

She gathered the little madcap into her arms for one second, then taking the witch-like face in both hands kissed each flushed cheek as she said: “I sometimes think you claim kinship with the pixies, you are half a witch. So you accept the bargain? Good! Have all the fun you wish but don’t burn the house down.” — Gabrielle E. Jackson, Peggy Stewart at School (The Goldsmith Publishing Company, 1918) Though the album title obliquely refers to the kindly Doctor D., the only animals the Pixies talk to are the shadowy ones that lurk inside us. Singer Black Francis, a fan of director David Lynch, writes unnerving lyrics worthy of “Eraserhead.” Listeners who merely want to dance can latch on to one of Kim Deal’s larger-than-life bass lines, or hitch a ride on a runaway train: Joey Santiago’s wild, churning guitar. With 15 thrill-a-minute songs, “Doolittle” is destined to be one of 1989’s best albums. — Greg Kot, The Chicago Tribune , 11 May 1989

The Rolling Stones

noun : a person who changes his habitation, business, or pursuits with great frequency : one who leads a wandering or unsettled life

Variations of the proverb “a rolling stone gathers no moss” have existed in English for seemingly time immemorial, and the related use of rolling stone to refer to a vagabond dates at least as far back as the late 1500s, just slightly older than Mick, Keith, and company. Ah, we kid, we kid. The band did not take their name from the proverb, at least directly, however. As Keith Richards’ recounted in the 2003 book According to the Rolling Stones , the name was determined in a panic when the publication Jazz News responded the band’s request to make an ad and asked their name: “ The Best Of Muddy Waters album was lying on the floor—and Track One was ‘Rollin’ Stone Blues’. So the band’s name was picked for us by Muddy Waters .”

“Oh my own pretty darling sweet Miss Floy!” cried the Nipper, running into Florence’s room, “to think that it should come to this and I should find you here my own dear dove with nobody to wait upon you and no home to call your own but never never will I go away again Miss Floy for though I may not gather moss I’m not a rolling stone nor is my heart a stone or else it wouldn’t bust as it is busting now oh dear oh dear!” — Charles Dickens, Dombey and Son (Bradbury & Evans, 1848) The Rolling Stones’ relation to pop right now is like Shakespeare’s to cyberpunk fiction: the influence is there because it’s everywhere, but in specific terms, it is centuries removed. The Stones know this. That’s why their new album, “Bridges to Babylon” (Virgin), updates their classic blues-rock style rather than jumping on new trends. —Ann Powers, The New York Times , 18 Oct. 1997

Why Does Gen Z Love Nirvana Tees, Thrasher Hoodies, and Bass Pro Shops Hats?

Gen Z Merch trends Nirvana Thrasher Bass Pro Shops Image may contain Jake Paul Justin Bieber Clothing TShirt Coat...

It’s Merch Week at GQ. Read The End of Merch , and check out our 41 Most Iconic Pieces From the Golden Age of Merch .

Costume designer Jordy Scheinberg noticed a trend on the set of You Are So Not Invited to My Bat Mitzvah , last summer’s charming Netflix family comedy that saw Adam Sandler play a pseudo-fictional dad to his real-life daughters, Sunny and Sadie. On camera, Scheinberg had dressed the film’s young cast in dialed-up, thematically considered versions of a contemporary Los Angeles tween’s wardrobe; in this case, that meant lots of fast-fashion party dresses and tie-dyed Online Ceramics T-shirts.

But whenever production wrapped for the day and the kids would gear up to go home, she clocked that they would all change into similar variations on the same outfit: pajama pants and a hot-pink Nirvana crewneck sweatshirt. The latter featured a rainbow-sherbet-toned version of the Seattle grunge band’s logo—a blissed-out, slack-tongue smiley face with Xs for eyes, first seen during the 1991 promotional cycle for the trio’s landmark sophomore album, Nevermind.

Given that all of these kids were born in the aughts, Scheinberg (a younger millennial, not even quite old enough to justify feeling truly possessive of Nirvana’s prime) felt confused. When she asked the kids if any of them listened to or liked any of Nirvana’s 30-year-old output and heard nos across the board, she felt totally vexed.

“Every single one of the kids—the boys, the girls, even some of the moms—had this sweatshirt,” the costume designer recalls, still reeling these many months later. In particular, the capitalism and Kurt Cobain of it all didn’t sit quite right. “It got to the point where I hated [this sweatshirt] so much that I had to lie and say that the legal team at Netflix wouldn't let me put it in the movie, because so many of the kids wanted to wear it. I was like, ‘Oh, we don't have the clearance for this band.’” As Scheinberg saw it, Gen Z regarded band shirts as little more than zesty—or even neutral—graphic tees.

TikTok content

This content can also be viewed on the site it originates from.

As it turns out, this particular electric-pink Nirvana sweatshirt—which the cast members reported buying from Urban Outfitters, that mall-brand stalwart of alt-flavored garb, where it retails for $79 —had already taken on a life of its own on TikTok . Across dozens of posts, users gleefully malign the pink sweatshirt wearers on their inability to name three to five Nirvana songs , while the pink sweatshirt wearers neg back with the purposely inflammatory no-thoughts-head-empty gag that Nirvana isn’t a band, it’s a clothing brand. Writer Sarah Stankorb detailed the phenomenon for Slate last fall, recounting her dismay to hear her young daughter describe her peers who wear Nirvana shirts as “preppy.” In other words, this pink Nevermind smiley sweatshirt is the band-merch equivalent of a Stanley cup .

“I would've been humiliated if somebody had asked me, ‘Oh, do you even like Nirvana? Name any song,’” says Scheinberg. “I would've clammed up because that's the culture I grew up in—like, you can't rep something unless you know something about it. And I feel like that does not exist anymore.”

Echoing Scheinberg, the writer Casey Lewis, who examines youth consumer trends in her popular newsletter “After School,” agrees that broadly manufactured merch has simply become part of a young person’s uniform.

When I pose the idea to Lewis, she wonders: “Have bands like Nirvana been flattened to the point where they're basically no different than a brand's logo?”

This week, GQ is considering the state of merch. We sourced a showcase of the coolest, most thoughtfully crafted pop-culture merchandise put to market in the last decade or so , relics made by and for 21st-century trendsetters, small-run society brands (including the aforementioned LA company Online Ceramics), enterprising multihyphenates, niche publications, and local eateries patronized by the martini-and-french-fries set. In his accompanying essay , my colleague Samuel Hine sounded the death knell for this particular milieu of merch that had come to define the last decade-plus of menswear—arguably nowhere more so than here at Gentleman’s Quarterly . We henceforth exalt and release these treasured, if heavily designed and increasingly plotty, hoodies and T-shirts that double as objets d’art and, as Hine writes, generally convey “a fuzzy bicoastal identity.” But what about their mass-produced counterparts?

As Hine concedes in his essay, merch as a consumer good—a pure money-moving product—is as booming as ever. Blockbuster tours by Taylor Swift, Beyoncé, and Harry Styles generated their own multimillion-dollar merch economies. Name a platform—Instagram, TikTok Shop, your nearest mall, or your local bodega —and there is a near-certain chance it will offer printed sweatshirts, tees, mugs, and other ephemera for sale. Procuring a piece of mass-produced merch with a licensed logo, such as a Nirvana sweatshirt, is about as uncomplicated as buying a Diet Coke or a box of tissues.

Indeed, you can buy a Nirvana band T-shirt for under $50 from almost any major apparel retailer you can think of: Urban Outfitters, Gap, H&M, Hot Topic, Target, Old Navy—hell, even Abercrombie & Fitch sells one . And it’s not all mass-market, either: In 2019, Marc Jacobs remixed the smiley-faced Nevermind tees in a redux capsule based on his storied “grunge” collection for Perry Ellis in 1992—around the same time Grace Coddington styled a then modern “Sliver” tee in the pages of Vogue —which ignited a series of lawsuits regarding the design’s usage. (The band’s company, Nirvana LLC, copyrighted the X-eyed smiley face in 1993, and its subsequent ubiquity has spurned many disputes about its true provenance.)

Despite Nirvana’s broad popularity 30 years ago, the omnipresence of its merch marks a sharp bent toward the mainstream for the band’s legacy—or, at least, the legacy of its graphic design. In 1993, Walmart wouldn’t stock physical albums of In Utero because of the album’s anatomically lurid artwork; nowadays, the retailer sells In Utero tees in nearly two dozen colors. While rare, true vintage Nirvana merch has its own thriving ecosystem , the widespread availability of cheap, new licensed stuff is appealing to consumers who were born years if not decades after Nevermind hit shelves. Whether or not they like the band is essentially besides the point.

Social media sociology tends to “typify” people by a shared personality—there’s always lots of talk about types of people , whose generalized personas are based on material points such as possessions, behaviors, or interests. A popular garment that becomes linked to a “type” of person can quickly turn into a meme-ified trend. A licensed Nirvana shirt is one, although there are other pieces of widely manufactured merch that stand out from the last several years, each with its own iconography that offers a tinge of counterculture, with all the comfort of monoculture.

In the late 2010s, the branded Thrasher sweatshirt—a piece of memorabilia commemorating the 43-year-old California skateboarding magazine, whose logo featured a tilting, bright yellow typeface often bordered by cartoonish flames—was a boon to late-stage Tumblr users, ascendant Instagram-native nepo babies, and sartorially minded stars like Justin Bieber, Rihanna, Tyler, the Creator, and A$AP Rocky. In 2016, prototypical Gen Alpha celebrity North West, who was then two years old, wore a pint-size Thrasher tee while her parents accompanied her to Build-a-Bear at LA’s Westfield Mall. Unsurprisingly, the popularity of Thrasher merch among nonskaters didn’t thrill the skating community: “We don’t send boxes to Justin Bieber or Rihanna or those fucking clowns,” the magazine’s late editor Jake Phelps told Hypebeast in 2016 , chiding the stars’ lack of skater bonafides. “The pavement is where the real shit is. Blood and scabs, does it get realer than that?”

Nonetheless, by 2017, Vogue had declared Thrasher tees an off-duty-model staple , and nowadays, Thrasher sells its wares on Amazon, where a hooded sweatshirt runs around $70, as well as at mall retailers like Zumiez and Pacsun. (An annual Thrasher subscription, which costs about $30, also comes with a free logo T-shirt. All told, probably not such a bad revenue stream for a traditional-media company.)

More recently, young consumers fixated on brightly hued polyester, mesh-backed logo trucker hats from Bass Pro Shops, a national sporting-goods chain that began in the early 1970s as a small fishing-tackle operation out of the Missouri Ozarks. The caps come in sporty colors like cobalt and blaze orange, and feature the brand’s red-and-goldenrod logo with an illustration of an agape spotted bass, and the stores have sold them for around $5.99 for years; as one TikTokker put it, the caps are “clean, timeless, and one of the only things other than the AriZona iced tea to beat inflation.” By the early days of the pandemic, TikTok was rife with “Bassholes,” and the caps were common among the platform’s most popular (usually male) creators: the countless proverbial sons of Sway House , the app’s since-disbanded bastion of lip-biting bad-boy influencers, at the height of their Saddle Ranch prowess. The professionally unlikable YouTuber turned prize-fighting boxer Jake Paul owned Bass Pro caps in several colors.

The Wall Street Journal attributed their popularity in part to the high-crown trucker hat’s nostalgic mid-aughts silhouette, and while Spy writer Jonathan Zavaleta zoned in on how the caps followed a wider, post-Trump “appropriation of blue-collar, middle-American sensibilities and workwear by cool teens and white-collar creatives,” such as John Deere merch, Carhartt double-knees , or RealTree camo .

For a certain kind of young consumer, the prevailing TikTok connotations all imply the same cynicisms: If you’re wearing a Nirvana shirt (and especially if you’re a girl), you probably can’t name five Nirvana songs. If you’re wearing a Thrasher hoodie , you’ve likely never set foot on a board. And if you’re wearing a Bass Pro hat , you’ve never seen a live trout in all your life. It’s an extension of what feels like a tale as old as time: cross-generational ire playing out on the battlefields of gate-kept band T-shirts.

The antidote to these hyper-online implications, though, is the hard reality that wearing culturally or temporally anachronistic merch simply because it looks cool is a time-honored tradition. It is also a sign that the internet is still capable of doing one of the best things it’s best at: introducing people to references outside of their usual scope, whether it’s the decades-old music of a band like Nirvana, or the high-physical-barrier-to-entry world of skateboarding, or the somewhat site-specific pastime of hunting and fishing.

Casey Lewis views this as the continued softening on the value proposition of authenticity about one’s identity-making interests, which remains a defining value and distress point among Generation X and millennials.

Looking back to her formative years in the ’90s and early 2000s, Lewis remembers the “shame associated with being a poser, where I think if you wore a band tee that you weren't actually a fan of, then people would call you a poser. I would see that play out in teen magazines, or you'd see it play out in movies.” Few insults stung worse. “But now [many] of the ‘trending aesthetics’ we see are kind of the definition of poser: cottagecore, fairycore. People are trying on these identities that they aren't , but there's no shame associated with it now.”

“Something about these days with micro-trends and TikTok, and you can try on different identities much easier,” Lewis says. “Now it's like you don't even have to wear that look to your high school to experiment with your style. You can literally just post a video of yourself on TikTok to see how it fits, how that look suits you.” Life is but a department store beauty floor of possibility—why wouldn’t you care for a spritz of eau de counterculture ?

According to New York Times critic and longtime merch connoisseur Jon Caramanica, cross-generationally popular merch is merely a sign of the source material’s potency. “Whether it was Nirvana or Thrasher or whatever, they won. They formed a cultural identity that was so powerful that it outlasted the actual thing,” he says.

“I'm going to assume if you're wearing a Nirvana shirt in 2024 and you don't know the band, maybe you have a sense that they were edgy. Maybe you have a sense that they rebelled. Maybe you're trying to tell some part of that story,” Caramanica explains. “It's not that different, frankly, from kids of my generation wearing Ramones T-shirts. None of y'all saw the Ramones.” Not dissimilarly, in 2015, GQ asked Fear of God founder and heavy-duty vintage band-shirt collector Jerry Lorenzo if he thought someone ought to be a card-carrying fan in order to rock a Nirvana tee; he said no, if only because “having played a small role in Kanye’s Yeezus tour merch , I’m just excited to see people wear it.”

The potential for discovery outweighs the preciousness of hard-wrought fandom. “Out of a hundred kids who are under 20 wearing a Nirvana shirt, maybe five of them go research the band and they find something fascinating and get really into it,” says Caramanica. “That, to me, is far more interesting than being on the churlish end of things and being like, ‘You don't know In Utero .’”

nirvana tour names

They may have a new name, but it’s still one of the best damn live bands in all of country music. Saying otherwise might stimulate unnecessary altercations with ornery rednecks, so it’s best just to accept it as the gospel truth. Mike and the Moonpies changed their name to Silverada earlier this year, and ahead of their new self-titled album out June 28th, they have just restocked their tour schedule with can’t miss dates all across the country, including some locales they’ve never been before. Michigan will get their first opportunity to see the band ever when they play The Machine Shop in Flint on August 21st. Other notable dates on the tour schedule include a headlining appearance at the Jackalope Jamboree on the June 28th album release date. They also have their highly-anticipated first headliner show at the Ryman Auditorium in Nashville with Uncle Lucius and Town Mountain on July 5th. Silverada will also be playing the Roostertail Festival July 6th in Indiana, and Bristol Rhythm and Roots in Bristol, TN in September. The Silverada show at the legendary Gruene Hall in Texas July 13th is already sold out, as is their first show of two at the Showboat Saloon in August. You can anticipate more sold out shows as they get closer. All dates on sale now.

Saw them in Amarillo last year, and Coupland a few years before. Wish they would come to Texas so I don’t have to drive as far to see them, even though it is surely worth it!!

Nothing up here, north of the boarder in Canuckistan either. 🙁

I hear border crossings have been a real PIA for bands.

Seen em twice, best live shows I’ve been to. One was at a small local bar with less than 100 people in attendance… they brought the house down. If only their merch folks were as on-fire as they are! Bought a signed “producers club” poster back in March and still haven’t received it 4 emails late. Trying to cover an ugly spot on a bare wall here for crying out loud!

Seems like their merch always takes forever to ship. I bought some stuff from their website a few years ago and it took so long that I was concerned I’d never receive it. Rest assured I’m sure your stuff will arrive eventually though.

I hope you’re right! And that they still have NOS moonpie posters. Still a little salty about the name change. Although I find myself more and more admiring the penmanship of whoever scrawled that “S” in Silverada.

Old man here: name change still bugs me

' data-tf-not-load src=

They just dropped another track off the new album and after a few listens, I think I’m into it. It’s a bit different, but I have trust in them considering all their previous albums have been great.

' data-tf-not-load src=

For better or worse, seems like they are evolving into more of a rock band to me.

The name change feels more right

' data-tf-not-load src=

While I’m sure Silverada will remain a band fans will want to see live just on reputation alone, but I’m just going to say what no one else is saying here out loud. The songs released from the new album so far are very disappointing. Honestly, I don’t understand the direction of the band here. There is a lot of talk of the guys changing to appeal more to a mainstream audience, but this sounds no more mainstream than it sounds like the Texas Honky Tonk the band is known for. I’m not sure who exactly this is supposed to appeal to other than hardcore fans that will convince themselves they like it.

They may ultimately prove me wrong, but I think this attempt at a name and sound change to take the band to the next level will turn out to be a misfire they regret.

' data-tf-not-load src=

I don’t think they have the desire to appeal to a “Mainstream” audience. I think they want to get out of the shadow that has been strangely cast over this band and that has people overlooking them that would otherwise be fans. I’m not going to say the new name or the new album will be effective in that because we don’t know yet. But they’re not trying to appeal to Luke Bryan fans.

I agree they don’t appear to be making a move at the mainstream. It does seem to be a common statement about the change though. I’m just confused as to who they are attempting to appeal to here, or if the changes will bring them out of the shadows. We’ll see.

' data-tf-not-load src=

Now four songs into the new album, I’m starting to agree with this sentiment.

As I’ve said before – the band has every right to make the music they want. And if these songs are where they want to go, more power to them. Maybe I’ll come around to the new sound, but so far each song has progressively put the thought in my mind about how the Moonpies sound that I fell in love with over the past 3 albums, is no longer with Silverada.

I preordered the new record the first day the Producers Club was pushed, and I bought tickets the moment the Ryman album release show went on sale, but personally, I’m feeling progressively less optimistic with the new direction.

' data-tf-not-load src=

Saw them at BBR back in 2021. Looking forward to seeing them again here in Cleveland on August 22nd. Surprised they’re making a stop in Cleveland, but so glad they are!

' data-tf-not-load src=

Amazing live band (I’ve got my tickets) with a handful of amazing albums, but we’ve heard 40% of the new album now and I think this new material so far is incredibly underwhelming.

This doesn’t sound at all to me like a seasoned honky-tonk band leveling up, playing to their strengths and shooting for the moon, rather a band in a creative slump making a lateral (or backward) move toward a sound and vibe that will leave longtime fans (and country music fans in general) scratching their heads at best and be ignored by potential new fans at worst.

I respect that maybe this is exactly the creative direction the band wants to follow, something they felt they needed to do, but I have no idea who will hear this material and think – yes, this is top-shelf country music worthy of all the buzz I’ve heard about this band over the years.

As a longtime fan, I will absolutely pick up the album and give it my full attention (and maybe, hopefully, I’ll end up enjoying it) but if I didn’t know and love the band already I probably wouldn’t give them a second look based on any of these new songs. Really bums me out to feel this way.

Couldn’t have said it better myself.

I felt like “One to Grow On” was, pun intended, one they would grow on. It was an amazing album top to bottom and it seemed to get unanimous love from the fans, country music blogs and outlets that I saw cover it. My best guess is it just wasn’t what the band connected with anymore. And that’s okay – I can respect that. Just bummed, selfishly.

One To Grow On should’ve been the band’s popular/commercial breakthrough. I mean, just banger after banger – and unequivocally country, despite some obvious rock influence. A home run of an album, but it barely seemed to move the needle for the band.

This new stuff? I’m not totally sure what the intent was – the narrative seemed to be that, along with the name change, it was intended to open doors and expand the fanbase – but I think the band may actually lose fans with this one.

I’m really glad they’ll be touring far and wide this album cycle. At least they’ll get a chance to wow audiences with their live show and create renewed interest in their back catalogue, because I’m not sure the new album will do that alone.

' data-tf-not-load src=

I’m disappointed they won’t be coming down to Florida again, had a great time seeing them at Will’s Pub last year. Looks like they’ve graduated to some bigger and better venues.

CHICAGO (WLS) -- Chicago legend Buddy Guy will join other big name music artists during the upcoming NASCAR Street Race festivities, organizers announced Tuesday.

Guy will play a special set on Saturday, July 6. He'll bring the blues sound to the main stage, after a 40th anniversary Chicago house music showcase, organizers said.

ABC7 Chicago is now streaming 24/7. Click here to watch

"Last year's Chicago Street Race was a great opportunity to put Chicago center-stage and I'm excited to join the lineup," Guy said in a statement. "The Blues is like gumbo. I can tell you how good it is, but you won't know until you taste it for yourself. I'm looking forward to the chance to introduce more fans to that Chicago feel, Chicago flavor, and most importantly - that Chicago sound."

Guy is set to perform from 1:15 to 2 p.m.

Guy's set will lead directly into the NASCAR Xfinity Series race, The Loop 110.

The state of tourism and hospitality 2024

Tourism and hospitality are on a journey of disruption. Shifting source markets and destinations, growing demand for experiential and luxury travel, and innovative business strategies are all combining to dramatically alter the industry landscape. Given this momentous change, it’s important for stakeholders to consider and strategize on four major themes:

  • The bulk of travel is close to home. Although international travel might draw headlines, stakeholders shouldn’t neglect the big opportunities in their backyards. Domestic travel still represents the bulk of travel spending, and intraregional tourism is on the rise.
  • Consumers increasingly prioritize travel—when it’s on their own terms. Interest in travel is booming, but travelers are no longer content with a one-size-fits-all experience. Individual personalization might not always be practical, but savvy industry players can use segmentation and hypothesis-driven testing to improve their value propositions. Those that fail to articulate target customer segments and adapt their offerings accordingly risk getting left behind.
  • The face of luxury travel is changing. Demand for luxury tourism and hospitality is expected to grow faster than any other travel segment today—particularly in Asia. It’s crucial to understand that luxury travelers don’t make up a monolith. Segmenting by age, nationality, and net worth can reveal varied and evolving preferences and behaviors.
  • As tourism grows, destinations will need to prepare to mitigate overcrowding. Destinations need to be ready to handle the large tourist flows of tomorrow. Now is the time for stakeholders to plan, develop, and invest in mitigation strategies. Equipped with accurate assessments of carrying capacities and enhanced abilities to gather and analyze data, destinations can improve their transportation and infrastructure, build tourism-ready workforces, and preserve their natural and cultural heritages.

Now boarding: Faces, places, and trends shaping tourism in 2024

Global travel is back and buzzing. The amount of travel fell by 75 percent in 2020; however, travel is on its way to a full recovery by the end of 2024. More regional trips, an emerging population of new travelers, and a fresh set of destinations are powering steady spending in tourism.

There’s no doubt that people still love to travel and will continue to seek new experiences in new places. But where will travelers come from, and where will they go?

We share a snapshot of current traveler flows, along with estimates for growth through 2030.

The way we travel now

Which trends are shaping traveler sentiment now? What sorts of journeys do today’s travelers dream about? How much are they willing to spend on their trips? And what should industry stakeholders do to adapt to the traveler psychology of the moment?

To gauge what’s on the minds of present-day travelers, we surveyed more than 5,000 of them. The findings reveal disparate desires, generational divides, and a newly emerging set of traveler archetypes.

Updating perceptions about today’s luxury traveler

Demand for luxury tourism and hospitality is expected to grow faster than for any other segment. This growth is being powered in part by a large and expanding base of aspiring luxury travelers with net worths between $100,000 and $1 million, many of whom are younger and increasingly willing to spend larger shares of their wealth on upscale travel options. The increase is also a result of rising wealth levels in Asia.

We dug deeper into this ongoing evolution by surveying luxury travelers around the globe about their preferences, plans, and expectations. Some widely held notions about luxury travelers—such as how much money they have, how old they are, and where they come from—could be due for reexamination.

Destination readiness: Preparing for the tourist flows of tomorrow

As global tourism grows, it will be crucial for destinations to be ready. How can the tourism ecosystem prepare to host unprecedented volumes of visitors while managing the challenges that can accompany this success? A large flow of tourists, if not carefully channeled, can encumber infrastructure, harm natural and cultural attractions, and frustrate locals and visitors alike.

Now is the time for tourism stakeholders to combine their thinking and resources to look for better ways to handle the visitor flows of today while properly preparing themselves for the visitor flows of tomorrow. We offer a diagnostic that destinations can use to spot early-warning signs about tourism concentration, along with suggestions for funding mechanisms and strategies to help maximize the benefits of tourism while minimizing its negative impacts.

Six trends shaping new business models in tourism and hospitality

As destinations and source markets have transformed over the past decade, tourism and hospitality companies have evolved, too. Accommodation, home sharing, cruises, and theme parks are among the sectors in which new approaches could present new opportunities. Stakeholders gearing up for new challenges should look for business model innovations that will help sustain their hard-won growth—and profits.

Unbundling offerings, cross-selling distinctive experiences, and embracing data-powered strategies can all be winning moves. A series of insight-driven charts reveal significant trends and an outlook on the future.

2024 U.S. Open predictions, picks: Ranking the field, favorites to win from 1-24 at Pinehurst

It starts with scottie scheffler, of course, but who else is primed to win the u.s. open.

rankingthefields-v2.jpg

The fourth U.S. Open at Pinehurst has arrived, and it sounds like the golf course is already a monster. While this type of setup likely opens the door for more than just the stars to walk through -- it takes juse one look at Pinehurst's history as a major venue to confirm that -- we decided to rank the top 24 in this field most likely to win the third major championship of the year.

Any list of the top 24 in any golf field in the world has to start with Scottie Scheffler, who is now looking for a second major in his last three starts after winning the Masters and finishing in the top 10 at the PGA Championship following his bizarre arrest and jailing in Louisville. He is the heavy favorite at 3-1, and yeah, he should be. Scheffler has won five of eight tournaments, solved the only thing that ailed him (a balky putter) and does not show any signs of slowing down. His U.S. Open history is sneaky-great, too, as we'll explore below.

Let's take a look at why each of these guys will play well starting with the guy who is playing the best golf since Tiger Woods was cooking back in the early to mid-2000s.

2024 U.S. Open field, ranked

Parenthesis indicates the golfer's best finish at a U.S. Open

1. Scottie Scheffler (T2 in 2022): How about this for another Scheffler statistic? He's lost to just nine golfers in his last three U.S. Opens. That's difficult to remember given how much he's accomplished in that time, but he finished T7 at Torrey Pines, T2 at Brookline and 3rd a year ago at Los Angeles Country Club. The two gifts that really stand out as it relates to a U.S. Open at this golf course are his underrated short game (currently second in the world in 2024!) and his patience and course management. Both will be on full display and likely the reasons he wins his third major this week at Pinehurst No. 2.

2. Collin Morikawa (T4 in 2021): Morikawa has finished 2nd, 4th and 4th in his last three events and also has a sneaky-excellent U.S. Open history. He lost to three players at Torrey Pines, four at Brookline and then 13 a year ago at LACC. One quiet story so far in 2024 is how good his short game and putting have been. He has gained strokes in both categories across four of his last six events, which is scary given how accurately he hits it on a course like this one.

3. Rory McIlroy (Won in 2011): Speaking of somebody who has become sneaky-great at the U.S. Open, enter the runner-up a year ago. He has five (!) consecutive top-five finishes here and is playing at a clip quite similar to the last two years. It's simply that Rory's excellence has been consumed by everything Scottie has been doing. McIlroy gets a lot of credit for a lot of different things, but I'm not sure he gets enough for the way he has transformed himself into a solid U.S. Open player.

4. Xander Schauffele (T3 in 2019): How about this one? Schauffele has never finished worse than T14 at a U.S. Open in seven total attempts. Never worse than T14! That includes six top 10s and five top 7s. He's been outrageously good, and now he's entering this one fresh off the biggest win of his career at the PGA Championship. I've traditionally bumped Schauffele down to the bottom of the top 10 because of his inability to close out a major championship, but now that he's got one under his belt, it's not difficult to see a couple of them falling with how well-rounded his game is.

5. Ludvig Åberg (n/a): It's shocking to think that, as good as Åberg was as an amateur, this is his first U.S. Open. He has been almost inconceivably good for his first year on the PGA Tour with six top 10s and nine top 25s in 12 starts. I go back and forth on whether you want to enter major championships with experience (especially U.S. Opens), but I'm leaning on how great he was at the Masters, where he generated .35 xWins, according to Data Golf. In other words, his score at Augusta National compared to the rest of the field was expected to win 35% of majors. And that was his first-ever major appearance!

6. Bryson DeChambeau (Won in 2020): Bryson and Pinehurst are not the match one would expect for somebody who's in the No. 6 spot on this list, but that's how good he's been playing at the majors so far this season. He finished T6 at the Masters and 2nd at the U.S. Open. The only question mark is what he does around the difficult, fast greens at Pinehurst. He says he's going to run wedges into the banks and bump them up toward the hole, which is the opposite of what Martin Kaymer did when he putted his way around the place in 2014 en route to an eight-shot win. We'll see if it works for DeChambeau.

7. Brooks Koepka (Won in 2017 and 2018): Do I love how Koepka is playing coming into this event? No. Do I love how he's played at majors so far this year? Also no. Koepka gets all the benefit of the doubt at U.S. Opens, though, given he has two titles -- and dang nearly a third -- so he's proven himself in this arena. Opens are often less about physical ability and more about mental and emotional control. There have not been many better guys in those areas than Koepka over the last decade. I'm excited to watch him work.

8. Tommy Fleetwood (2nd in 2018):  This says less about Fleetwood as a true contender at this tournament and more about how few true contenders actually exist. Still, Fleetwood does have three top fives in his last seven U.S. Open starts, including one just a year ago at LACC. He's built for the Opens (both U.S. and the original) and hasn't missed a cut anywhere since March 10. He should contend here at some point this weekend.

9. Hideki Matsuyama (T2 in 2017): Matsuyama is being a bit forgotten about this week at Pinehurst, even though he has three top eight finishes in his last eight starts and a host of good showings at U.S. Opens. One stat that should encourage if you're picking Matsuyama? He's been the best in the world around the green so far in 2024. That's better than Scheffler, Justin Thomas, Jordan Spieth -- better than 'em all.

10. Justin Thomas (T8 in 2020): I don't know why, but I have a sneaky J.T. feeling this week. The golf has been up and down, but there has been plenty of good: T5 at RBC Heritage, T8 at the PGA Championship. He has not putted well so far this year, but perhaps that gets a bit negated by a difficult, fast, wild golf course. His iron play remains elite -- Thomas has gained nearly two strokes on the field at the Memorial on approach shots -- and he tends to thrive in big time environments.

11. Viktor Hovland (T12 in 2019): I have been all over the place on Hovland, mostly because he's been all over the place himself. Before the PGA Championship, I thought he might finish outside the top 70 in the FedEx Cup. After the PGA Championship, I thought he had a real chance to win a major this year. Then he ejected from the Memorial, and I have no idea what to think. Certainly the ball-striking is (and has been) good enough. The short game, though, remains to be seen. He's one of the most interesting guys in the field for me this week.

12. Max Homa (T47 in 2022): He has a strange U.S. Open record with absolutely no success to hang his hat on. Homa has four missed cuts in five appearances and never been in contention. It did feel like he turned a major championship corner in April when he contended at Augusta National, though. Plus he's a great iron player, which will be useful this week.

13. Jon Rahm (Won in 2021) :   Rahm withdrew from the U.S. Open on Tuesday citing concerns for his long-term health.

14. Matt Fitzpatrick (Won in 2022): He's had a similar season to J.T. in that he's been up and down and kind of all over the place. However, he enters this event off a T5 at the Memorial, and he's obviously a terrific U.S. Open player with a solid short game that could buoy him this week.

15. Will Zalatoris (T2 in 2022): I'm not that concerned about his middling play of late because of how awesome he's been at majors over the course of his career. In the last five U.S. Opens, only Scheffler, Schauffele, McIlroy and Rahm have a better strokes gained number than Zalatoris.

16. Tony Finau (5th in 2018): Finau has quietly been striking the heck out of the ball so far this year. He's gained strokes on approach in 12 of his 15 events and has top 20s in five of his last seven starts. I would be surprised if he didn't bounce back from his MC-MC-T32 run at the last three U.S. Opens.

Who will win the U.S. Open, and which longshots will stun the golfing world?  Visit SportsLine to see the projected U.S. Open leaderboard , all from the model that's nailed 12 golf majors, including the last three Masters and the 2024 PGA Championship.

17. Patrick Cantlay (T14 in 2023): I do not have a lot of confidence in where Cantlay is at with his game, but he's never missed a cut at the U.S. Open in eight total tries and has finished in the top 15 in each of the last three years. As with Morikawa and Schauffele, this event should set up perfectly for him, but it does seem a bit like all his work on the PGA Tour policy board is taking a toll on his success on the golf course as he's having arguably his worst season in the last eight.

18. Sahith Theegala (T27 in 2023): He's electricity defined as we saw at the PGA Championship. However, I'm concerned that the driver might get a bit too wayward and that he won't continue to get lucky lies in the waste and sandy areas. If he gets hot, though, Pinehurst will absolutely get behind him.

19. Jordan Spieth (Won in 2015): I nearly left him off this list because of how poorly he's playing. I couldn't do it, though, not with how he's driving the ball now and how magical he can be in any given event. I did not think I would be saying "well driver is fine, it's just everything else that needs help" about Spieth, but here we are. It's true, though. This is the best driving season he's ever had, and he can't stop missing cuts. Make it make sense.

20. Shane Lowry (T2 in 2016): Lowry has at times been a solid U.S. Open player, and he's had a nice little run of golf recently with a T6 at the PGA Championship and no missed cuts since January. Also has an absolutely filthy short game, which should play nicely this week.

21. Wyndham Clark (Won in 2023): Clark has had one of the weirdest years I can remember. He won Pebble Beach, nearly took Bay Hill and TPC Sawgrass and Harbour Town, but then he missed the cut at both majors and the Memorial. I have to include him here as the reigning champion who has also been playing good golf (at times), but I don't do so with much confidence.

22. Sepp Straka (T28 in 2019): Why not us?! Straka has top eights in four of his last five stroke play events, and his iron play has been exquisite. It's true that he's not long off the tee, and that could hurt him, but if the irons are dialed, he's a sneaky fun pick to make some noise.

23. Cameron Smith (4th in 2023): Smith was awesome last year at LACC and finished T6 at this year's Masters. He's been pretty average since that finish at Augusta National, but like Lowry, his short game is magic and should carry the day for him at Pinehurst.

24. Russell Henley (T13 in 2021):  King of the "makes every cut he looks at but never contends to win" team. Data Golf has Henley ranked No. 8 (!) in the world, and a lot of that is because he's missed just one cut so far in 2024 (The Players Championship). He played in one of the final pairings back in 2021 at Torrey Pines, and this place is probably even better suited for him to do so again.

Nitty Gritty Dirt Band

On March 21st, 2024, the Dirt Band will kick off the first leg of their last traditionally scheduled gigs, ALL THE GOOD TIMES: The Farewell Tour. No need to fret, this isn’t goodbye forever, but it will be the last fans see of multi-city runs and long bus rides from the group that helmed the multi-artist Will The Circle Be Unbroken series that featured the likes of Mother Maybelle Carter, Doc Watson, Earl Scruggs, Emmylou Harris, Taj Mahal, Levon Helm, and dozens more.

“‘All The Good Times’ perfectly describes our career,” said the band in a statement this week. “Playing our music for Dirt Band fans all over the world has been an incredible experience for us. The most important part of that has been the connection to our audience—that beautiful communal give and take is like nothing else. That's the very spirit we'll be celebrating as we head into our farewell tour. We really look forward to seeing you folks. Good times will be had by all!”

About Nitty Gritty Dirt Band: With one of the best lineups in the group’s storied history, The Nitty Gritty Dirt Band, featuring founding members Jeff Hanna (lead vocals, guitar) and Jimmie Fadden (drums, harmonica, vocals); longtime bandmate Bob Carpenter (keys, vocals)—a member since 1980; along with Jim Photoglo (bass, vocals); Jaime Hanna (guitar, vocals); and Ross Holmes (fiddle, mandolin, vocals); remains one of the most accomplished bands in American roots music. The Nitty Gritty Dirt Band played their first gig in 1966 in Southern California as a jug band and by 1969 had become a cornerstone of the burgeoning country-rock community. Their career breakthrough came in 1970 with the release of the record Uncle Charlie & His Dog Teddy and the single “Mr. Bojangles,” a folksy Top 10 pop hit that brought roots music to the national forefront. In 1972, they released the first of three groundbreaking Will The Circle Be Unbroken records, collaborating with many of the best bluegrass, country, and folk artists in the world. The band also has enjoyed vast success on the U.S. Country charts with hits like "Fishin' In The Dark," "Modern Day Romance," and "Long Hard Road." The Dirt Band are GRAMMY, CMA, and IBMA Award winners, and their Nitty Gritty Dirt Band & Friends - Fifty Years, Circlin' Back! for PBS was an Emmy Award-winning television special. The Dirt Band’s latest album, Dirt Does Dylan—released in 2022—has received widespread critical acclaim. More at nittygritty.com/history.
