Exchange Rates

The exchange rates published are the “Buy TT” rates from our bank (Westpac NZ), as these are the relevant rates for buying a foreign currency. Note that there is a discrepancy between this rate and the “Sell TT” rate, which is often mistakenly quoted by some agents.

This rate is valid for a period of 7 days from the time the invoice is sent out.

Please Note: There is small incremental buffer included to counter any fluctuations within the time period before payment is made.

Travel Connections - Karen Pocklington

I always think I have the best job in the world because I spend my life completing other people's dreams. I've been in the travel industry for more than 30 years and I am fully committed to using that experience to build very special trips for all my clients. My clients range from very experienced travellers to first-time travellers and are all very different in their own way. To me, being a Travel Expert is all about taking the time with every client; figuring out what each of them needs, so I can genuinely prepare the perfect package to fit them. In one day, I could be sending a client to Queensland for a week of adventure rides with the family, to sending a couple on a bucket list trip around Europe! But you can guarantee, that I will have spent both the time and the effort, to ensure each of these trips brings the client great joy.

To me, it's about making each trip special, by handpicking the very best of products that the global network has on offer. We use the thousands of wholesalers who throw big business at airlines, hotels, tour operators, cruise ships, etc - any adventure you could imagine - to create nothing but the best experience possible, and at the best deal possible. That's why my most experienced travellers don't use the internet to book their travel. They come and talk to me.

Working in Market - New Zealand

  • Share Share on Facebook Share on Twitter Share on WhatsApp Copy Link

See how to work in New Zealand, one of Tourism Australia's key markets, and learn key insights into the various travel distribution channels.

Distribution system

New Zealand’s (NZ) travel distribution system is large and complex. With Australia being the the closest neighbour, virtually any outlet selling travel will offer packages and tactical activity for travel “across the Tasman”. A high percentage of travel sellers rightly position themselves as specialists in selling Australia.

While many Kiwi (common term for New Zealander) travellers are confident in booking direct or using an OTA, traditional distribution channels remain important for customised itineraries, groups and special interest travel – especially for new experiences and off-the-beaten-track destinations.

In terms of air access, Australia is the best-connected international destination from NZ, with 9 non-stop gateways. Air New Zealand and Qantas are the largest trans-Tasman airlines are Tourism Australia’s closest partners in the market. Others offer limited services such as Jetstar, Emirates, LATAM and China Eastern.

Wholesalers

Commission Level: 20% - 30%

  • Due to New Zealand’s proximity to Australia, the wholesale network is smaller here, compared to other international markets. Many Kiwi travel agents have a history of booking direct and have the confidence to manage all elements of holiday packages. The wholesalers that do exist operate nation-wide, with many owned by the large retail chains.
  • Major wholesalers selling Australia currently include Infinity Holidays (part of Flight Centre), Go Holidays (part of Helloworld), Lifestyle Holidays (part of First Travel Group) and Expedia’s TAAP program, exclusive to retail travel agents. Bed banks such as Hotel Beds also play a key role for some travel agents.
  • House of Travel is a large retail travel brand and has its own wholesale operation with 65 high-street retail outlets and a number of brokers buy through. These outlets are franchised, meaning they are branded as House of Travel but are individually owned and operated.

Retail Agents

Commission Level: 10% - 15%

  • Retail agencies are adapting to change and continue to restructure their businesses by moving away from low commission products to more profitable products and services. The structure of the retail industry is also changing as single location agencies continue to consolidate into larger chains and consortia groups.
  • A good majority of these advisors are made up from the large retail chains of House of Travel (66 retail stores), Flight Centre Group (45 stores), Helloworld (33 stores) and YOU Travel (23 stores).
  • Outside of the major retailers, sits an extensive network of broker groups and independent agents. The number of brokers and homeworkers has been on the rise since the global pandemic forced many traditional high-street travel agencies to close.
  • Online travel agents or ‘OTAs’ such as Expedia, Webjet and Booking.com remain a popular way for Kiwis to book travel to Australia, due to New Zealand’s close proximity and familiarity with Australia. Distribution of hotels, resorts, lodges, attractions/tours, and car rental through major OTAs to Australia has increased as they continue to expand their product offerings.
  • Specialist OTAs such as GoSee Travel (Cars and Campervans) and Book Me (tours and attractions) continue to grow and add value to those consumers who initially booked air and land components then research what to do once they’ve arrived at their destination.

Aussie Specialists

  • The Aussie Specialist Program (ASP) is the primary platform for Tourism Australia to train and develop front line travel sellers to best sell Australia.
  • There are over 1200 qualified Aussie Specialist agents in New Zealand, growing month-on-month as the industry returns to full-strength. This includes 23 ‘Premier Aussie Specialists’, recognised with Premier status for their extensive knowledge of the destination, commitment to selling Australia and ongoing learning via the Aussie Specialist Program.

Inbound Tour Operators

Commission Level: up to 35%

  • The amount of business New Zealand travel advisors put through ITOs is relatively small, compared to other international markets. There are many reasons for this including retail agents’ confidence in selling Australia and the consumers’ familiarity with a close destination, meaning less in-destination support is needed. Much like with the use of wholesalers, ITOs are a more appealing booking channel for other far-reaching destinations and off-the-beaten track experiences. E.g. an agent is much more likely to approach an ITO for a Western Australia tailored journey, than a resort stay on the Gold Coast (a much more popular destination for Kiwis).
  • Some Australian inbounders have offices in New Zealand and are active with travel advisors selling outbound to Australia – for example, ANZCRO and Abercrombie and Kent. Whereas some  are based in New Zealand, operating as an inbounder for both NZ and Australia, but mainly targeting travellers from around the globe with minimal focus on the outbound Kiwi market. Examples of these organistations are First Light Travel and Unparalleled Journeys.

Distribution

  • The travel trade and distribution system in New Zealand is small compared to other international markets however still accounts for large numbers of travellers to Australia due to NZ’s strong ties and close proximity.
  • Due to the global pandemic, the distribution system has changed 1200 at its lowest point. However, recovery is well underway and TAANZ (Travel Agent’s Association of New Zealand) reported that by October 2023 the estimated number of active agents was back up to over 2000.
  • The total trip spend on leisure travel to Australia by Kiwis was AUD$2.4 billion in 2023, growing by 96% compared to 2022, while the average trip spend was AUD$1,652, growing by 8% compared to 2022 (Source: IVS 2023).
  • Despite the increase of online distribution, retail agencies are still an integral distributor of Australian travel for Kiwis, particularly for intricate itineraries to parts of the country less familiar to Kiwis. Travellers aged 55+ are also increasingly looking to ensure their travel spend is managed by a trusted travel advisor.
  • With tourism operators throughout Australia (and globally) becoming more digitally savvy, there is now greater ability for travel advisors to book direct. Particularly in New Zealand, where the time-difference to Australia is less and advisors can receive a same-day response.

Planning and purchasing travel

  • Kiwis who book with the trade will often research elements of their Australian holiday online and then work with a travel agent for planning and booking.
  • For Kiwis, Australia is as close to an “always on” destination as it gets due to the strong ties and ease of access. Certainly, for the most popular destinations like the Gold Coast, Sydney and Melbourne.
  • Like the market itself, the purchase cycle in New Zealand is fragmented and varied. Consumer confidence for travel to Australia is high and booking lead times are relatively short compared to other international markets, generally sitting at between 6-12 weeks.
  • Booking trends have been difficult to identify since the pandemic but traditionally, high booking periods are January-February when retail agencies and airlines have their new year sales with regular spikes around August-October.

Special interest

  • There is a segment of the New Zealand leisure market, particularly amongst those over 45+ years of age, looking for premium travel and special interest experiences. Retail consortia groups such as Virtuoso are growing in this market and have a number of preferred wholesale and inbound tourism partners specialising in custom, high-end journeys in Australia.
  • The Signature Experiences of Australia program packages and promotes Australia’s outstanding tourism experiences within a variety of niche areas and special interest categories. Signature Experiences of Australia currently comprises wineries, luxury lodges, golf courses, walks, Indigenous experiences, fishing adventures and wildlife. In each case Tourism Australia has partnered with select industry collectives that have a compelling marketing proposition and share a common goal and vision. An increasing number of wholesalers in market are targeting travellers looking for authentic and uniquely Australian experiences in these spaces. Planning a visit to market

Top tips for sales calls.

  • Travel sellers within New Zealand are very approachable and value in-person connection. Particularly in regional areas where it’s more of an effort to travel to.
  • The market values strong relationships and loyalty, which takes time to build.
  • New Zealand enjoys a friendly rivalry with Australia and the similar laid-back nature of which Kiwis matches that of Australians. Don’t be scared to play off the rivalry and have a laugh.
  • To combat any over-familiarity Kiwis have with Australia, it’s always recommended to highlight new and unique experiences.
  • For more information on sales calls, key market centres to visit and general planning of a visit to market, please see Tourism Australia’s  Tourism Export Toolkit .

Below is a selection of Tourism Australia’s identified Key Distribution Partners currently in New Zealand.

  • House of Travel
  • Flight Centre

The tour guide was exceptional! The accommodations could have been better.
Excellent tour. Definitely recommend

Trafalgar

  • Excellent - 1,909 reviews for New Zealand tours
Overall, we enjoyed our tour immensely – but with two (2) exceptions. FIRST: The day when the tour began we looked forward to going to an Australian indigenous museum. I believe it was called “Birrunga”. In particular and on the forms required to go on the tour, I highlighted my desire to learn about the Indigenous People (history, pictures, today in society, future and special beliefs). What we experienced on the tour was an Art exhibition by one artist who was very difficult to hear, who could not answer questions about his own people, who did not have handouts so we could understand some native words and pointed to pictures expressing his interpretation of a particular thought. Others on the tour felt the same way. Then we were taken back to the hotel and told the rest of the day we were on our own. SECOND: We were promised a trip to the exotic Whitsunday Island. We had heard from friends and through reading that this was a must for our tour. However, at the last minute (and almost exactly the last minute) we were told the trip to Whitsunday Island had been cancelled and we would receive a refund. Because of the late notification we were unable to make plans for the cancelled day. We tried to fill that day on our own with other excursions, like dinner cruises, etc. but they were all fully booked. And that was an entire day from tour that Trafalgar failed to meet their obligation. In speaking with other tour members who were upset, we interpreted your decision to cancel shocking, disappointing and not in line with the high expectations we had from your statements about the tour. We did not know if the Whitsunday excursion was cancelled because of mechanical reasons, crew problems, ship problems and were left with the impression we were cancelled because of the size of our group (13) and replaced by a larger group. Although you refunded our money for that, our tour day was lost. Not good! SUMMARY: Christin was wonderful throughout. Regarding the Whitsunday cancellation, she showed her understanding of our disappointment. However, as a result of these two issues, with special emphasis on Whitsunday, we feel Trafalgar did not live up to the high expectations you promised us.
Wonderful trip, Hope and Rick were amazing hosts.

Summer did a brilliant job in making 12 strangers into a joyous group. Every day was an adventure.

Meals along the way were to rushed with having to find place to eat and eat before getting on the bus. Would be better for preorder, have in a cooler on the bus so we can just stop, relax and eat at nice spot along the way. Loved mix of internationals and ages in the group. Hostels were clean and well located. Guide was organized and kept group together and on time. Coordination and information dispensed was not good between TourRadar, Haka Tours and Intrepid. Questions asked kept being referred to be answered by actual guide when on the trip and felt I would have preferred to know what was possible (subject to weather) before arrival as response several times was advised this might not be tour for me.
Some of the hostels were dirty and far from centre, also arrived at hostels too late

Tour was good, driver and guide excellent, but the hotel in Auckland was lacking.
I thoroughly enjoyed my tour. The guide, Isobel, paid very good attention to details and the comfort of her tourists.I felt safe and secure in the bus as Mark's driving was very competent and Isobel was delightful, patient and full of fun, a real people person. She and Mark worked well together, meal times, departure times and other important information was provided well in advance. Good provision was made for frequent stops to allow for toilet breaks and the purchase of refreshments. I liked their attention to time keeping. For me, everything worked smoothly which made the tour relaxed and stress free. I would highly recommend Isobel and Mark.

Globus

  • Excellent - 74,895 reviews for New Zealand tours
We are on the 20 day New Zealand - Australia tour. We do not recommend this tour. This review is sadly because our bus driver, Glenn, said quite a few obviously racist things about Indigenous Australians on our bus ride to and from Uluru. We have been on several Globus tours over the years, and we are very disappointed that Globus employs a company and people with this kind of harmful and backward thinking. On our trip to Uluru on Nov. 15., Glenn told us that Indigenous people are thieves. He said the Indigenous people specifically are responsible for theft in Alice Springs and along the highways. While passing Mount Ebenezer he told us that the Indigenous people are “true communists” and did a bad job running the gas station in the area, which caused the rest stop to close. Glenn then said that someone else tried to open the station again, but the Indigenous people “showed up with spears” and caused the new owner to close the gas station. He actually said, “showed up with spears.” Perhaps Glenn thinks that because it was a bus full of white people he could get away with being overtly racist. But no we are not ok with it. Racism is wrong. On this Globus trip in Australia we’ve had no access to an Indigenous Australian guide to give us a balanced viewpoint. Instead, we were given racist views about a group of people who were not there to defend themselves and add important context. I wrongly presumed we would be given some kind of properly assembled educational information about Indigenous Australian groups directly from Indigenous people, like we received in New Zealand. The “educational” video we watched on the bus to Uluru romanticized the colonization of Australia, depicting the English colonists as heroes and hard workers who earned their right to be here and makes no mention of how these colonists displaced the Indigenous people and basically stripped them of their land and culture. I had to google everything to learn more. This is literal whitewashing of history and distorts the reality of what happened. We are shocked at how blatantly outdated this driver and company are in the changing world.
Gets to the main places but not the best planned tour. Very compressed timelines for the trip, leave you feeling rushed through many destinations. Sometimes not even enough time to eat, or no place. No suggestions or prep from guide. And yet, there's a lot of time on the bus and/or the plane - 5 hour layover for a plane to get to the hotel at midnight. Often felt disorganized - I get everything had just reopened but seems the hotels were often unprepared for us coming, excursions that people had booked for months suddenly unavailable or not booked by company. Couldn't they call in advance, for example, to make sure there's enough food at a hotel dinner??? Tour guide wasn't great

Tom and Robbie both were amazing tour guides. The big south was 10 out of 10 experience. Weather definitely will play a big role in your activities. The flexibility of the guides makes the trip free more like a family and friends on holiday. It was so an illuminating experience with everyone that came. 20 April - 3 May best weather!! First week we had 18 people and the next week, 7.

The tour went really well. The co-ordination of the drivers everywhere we went was amazing. They were prompt, kind and very helpful. I could not fault them. So whoever organises the tour did a great job. We were unaware that we were the only people going on this tour but once we adjusted it was great. I would like to comment on the huge distance we had to do to get to Piahia. If I could suggest maybe a stopover at another place of interest on the way would be great. I would recommend this tour if you want to get an overview of the North Island of New Zealand
The tour was very enjoyable and well organised. Everything went like clockwork and we saw some beautiful and interesting scenery and learned elements of New Zealand history, particularly from the Waitangi Treaty visit. I am happy to recommend this tour.

Haka Tours

  • Excellent - 355 reviews for New Zealand tours
this tour was just a huge disappointment, this is overpriced, unorganized and leaves you sorry for all the money you spent. of course the sights you will see are amazing, but the tour itself just makes you sad. the guide had absolutely no plan at anytime what was going on, due to this lack of organization, it was always quite hectic rushing from one place to the next. also I made bookings for activities back when I booked the tour itself months in advance, just to realize once I was at the activity it was not prebooked. here it’s advertised as 18-39, which was actually not true, more like an average of 45+. the hostels are not high-end, they are just normal average youth hostels. I did reach out to them on the second day, explaining the circumstances, but sadly did not receive a very constructive answer and no resulting action. honestly, I‘m just mad.
Everyday was different. A well planned out tour giving a rich experience. You want to know what Maori culture is in a short time? This is it!!!!!!

The tour started on a wrong note because we were not met at the airport in Auckland. After some time and effort another gentleman unrelated to the tour drove us to our hotel and wouldn't dream of taking any money. This was the first of many interfaces with NZ people, who seem to be universally friendly and helpful. Once we met with tour director Fernando and the rest of our tour group the trip was terrific. Although this was billed as "rail tour" we spent much more time on the tour bus then on the rails. However, the two bus drivers - John and then Rob - were excellent and provided local insight into all of the areas we visited, in a knowledgeable and humorous manner. We managed to leave our passports in a hotel safe, and Fernando went all out to recover them for us. The tour group were all seniors, and we made some good friends that we hope to see again. The NZ weather was perfect for the whole tour, and we were in warm dry Christchurch when Auckland had their floods Clearly we would have needed a much longer time to see all that NZ has to offer, but what we did see was impressive - incredible greenery, roads and rail lines installed thru impossible terrain, huge cattle and sheep herds, entrepreneurship displayed every where. Terrific tour, nice folks!
Our tour director, Daniel, did a really good job and made our 6 days very enjoyable. The bus driver was also very good and they were both a joy to be around. Their hard work and effort for our benefit was much appreciated.

Die Reise war super und für den kurzen Zeitraum hat man sehr viel von Neuseeland gesehen
It was my first time doing a tour like this with other people who I didn’t know. Our leader (Jess) broke the ice real quick and we all had a great time with her. Loads of stuff to do but it was also really easy to take yourself away for a bit if you needed. I booked onto another tour (Philippines) before this one had even finished because it was so good. Only thing I can suggest is having a different, longer version which includes things like the coromandel, Wellington, Franz Josef etc but couldn’t fault my experience and I am looking forward to coming back!

New Zealand Travel Industry

New Zealand has a population of 4.5 million and is the only OECD nation outside of continental Europe that requires workers to receive at least 30 work-days of paid vacation and holidays. For a geographically isolated country in the South Pacific this generous vacation package combined with affordable international flights has resulted in the United States being the most popular long-haul destination by New Zealand travelers.  (Australia, New Zealand’s closest neighbor is the most popular short-haul destination.)  Leisure is the primary reason for travel to the USA, followed by visiting family/friends and business.

New Zealanders can fly to the United States from Auckland to Honololu; Los Angeles; San Francisco; Houston and Chicago. These routes are supported by national carrier Air New Zealand and U.S. operators American Airlines, Hawaii Airlines and United Airlines. Exciting 2021 developments for the industry include the introduction of two new routes:

American Airlines will introduce a new route from Christchurch to LAX and Air New Zealand will introduce its new route from Auckland to New York.

New Zealanders are among the few global travelers who gather research online – they like to go to an actual location where they can book with a travel agent. Approximately 50% of pre-departure bookings are made through wholesalers and travel agents.  This means it is important to support the marketing and training of the local travel industry.

The annual IPW travel trade event hosted by the U.S. Travel Association is an opportunity for New Zealand’s travel trade buyers and leading journalists/publishers to attend/select and prepare material to tell local consumers about the many unique experiences and unlimited range of destinations available to visitors to the United States.  New Zealand’s IPW delegation is coordinated through the U.S. Commercial Service.

For more information on promoting the U.S. as a travel destination, U.S. travel and tourism bureau/travel attractions can contact Commercial Specialist Janet Coulthart, Wellington, New Zealand.  Email:   [email protected]

New wholesaler launches in Australia and NZ

new zealand travel wholesalers

A new travel wholesaler has opened its doors to trade bookings from Aussie and Kiwi agents.

The brainchild of Russel Masterton from Destination International Holidays, Australia & New Zealand Travel Company sees a new direction for the full-service agency.

“The main point of difference is we are travel designers. If you can’t find it on our website, then we will build the itinerary and quote it from scratch for you,” he said.

Masterton believes all travel agencies are entitled to their slice of the growing home travel market, and he wants to help other agents benefit from the #holidayathome trend.

“Some travellers will be happy to make their own plans, but many customers won’t be confident to complete online bookings and will turn to their travel agent for expert advice and assistance, just like they would have done for overseas trips,” he said.

As the name suggests, Australia & New Zealand Travel Company specialises in both destinations and works with a number of ground operators across each.

“Australia & New Zealand Travel Company has developed tours to ensure that we offer the best value for money and travel experiences to suit the individual needs of all travellers,” Masterton said.

“Our product range is affordable and flexible, and our philosophy is that it shouldn’t cost the earth to see the world.

“We deliver exceptional attention to detail and want to make sure that your first booking with us is not your last.”

You can reach Australia & New Zealand Travel Company via email at [email protected] and subscribe for updates on the wholesaler’s latest products and special deals here .

This Country Was Just Named the Most Beautiful in the World — and It Has More Sheep Than People

Can confirm, it's gorgeous.

If you're looking for your next vacation to be a full Zoolander experience — you know, one where everything is really, really… really ridiculously good looking — Rough Guides has a few places for you to see.

In May, the website that helps travelers create bespoke vacation experiences unveiled its list of the most beautiful countries on Earth . However, it wasn't just their own opinions, as the list was voted on by its travelers and readers just like you.

After all the votes were tallied, New Zealand was named the top-ranking spot, a destination famous for having more sheep than people and a nation where you're never more than 90 miles from a beach .

"New Zealand’s 'amazing scenery' had a big impact on you," the team shared in the findings. "The same goes for the 'diversity of landscapes' in New Zealand, especially the 'contrast in scenery between the mountains and beaches.'"

The findings also noted the nation's plentiful outdoor activities, from hiking and biking to kayaking with whales, road-tripping through the mountains, lounging on its beaches, and exploring its fantastic protected spaces like the Aoraki Mackenzie International Dark Sky Reserve . Of course, there are plenty of cultural experiences to be had as well, particularly in its cities, where travelers can visit spots like the Auckland Museum or the Christchurch Art Gallery Te Puna o Waiwhetu. (If you need more advice on how to experience the best of the best that New Zealand has to offer, read Travel + Leisure 's guide to the nation here .)

Joining New Zealand in the top spots are Italy, which came in second this year, dropping from the top spot in 2023, followed by Canada, Switzerland, and France rounding out the top five. The United Kingdom, Norway, Australia, Greece, and South Africa rounded out the top 10, showcasing just how geographically diverse the world's beauty can really be.

Not to be outdone, the United States came in at the No. 11 spot, thanks to the boundless beauty of the nation's fantastic national parks. "Getting into the wilderness is one way of seeing a range of landscapes (and incredible wildlife). Don't miss out on highlights like the Grand Canyon, Yosemite, and Yellowstone national parks," the website noted in the results. However, it added that America's beautiful beaches are not to be missed either, including the sandy beaches up and down the Pacific Coast, the azure waters off Florida, and the craggy shores around New England.

New Zealand FestPAC delegation to showcase heritage of Aotearoa, neighbor Pacific nations

H ONOLULU (HawaiiNewsNow) - New Zealand is sending 85 prestigious artists from Aotearoa and nearby Pacific nations to the 13th Festival of Pacific Arts and Culture (FestPAC) in Hawaii.

Delegation co-heads Puamiria Parata-Goodall and Bonita Bigham joined HNN’s Sunrise to talk about upcoming events showcasing Maori and Pacific arts and culture from Aotearoa.

The delegation will include Maori artists, 44 performers from Te Whanau-a-Apanui, Te Matatini winners, traditional waka experts, skilled carvers, weavers, musicians and performers.

This year’s theme, “Ho’oulu lāhui — regenerating Oceania,” revolves around the interconnectedness of Pacific peoples and the importance of traditional navigation and canoes, like the waka from New Zealand.

FestPAC will kick off with a waka ceremony at Kualoa Regional Park, featuring a 10-man crew led by master navigator Hoturoa Barclay-Kerr.

Special Section: FestPAC 2024

“It’s about regenerating every developing and traditional art forms, waka is one of those,” said Parata-Goodall, who hails from the Ngai Tahu, Kati Mamoe, Waitaha and Ngāti Kahungunu tribes. “It’s also about us relearning our traditions of voyaging across the ocean between our Pacific nations.”

“It’s critical that we as Pacific people, we remember that the ocean doesn’t separate us, even though we now have arbitrary lines which define us as countries but the ocean actually connects us as people,” said Bigham, of Ngaruahine and Te Atiawa descent. She is in Hawaii on a Fulbright Scholarship, researching the impacts of laws on the retrieval and use of marine mammal resources for artistic purposes.

Delegates will promote the protection of endangered species and sustainable trade, offer artists opportunities for career growth and international exposure, and use arts to inspire discussions on environmental solutions.

They will also discuss preserving the Maori language and other Pacific languages, rejuvenating endangered art forms, empowering youth voices and using the arts to address climate change and historical trauma, like what happened on the atolls of Tokelau.

Wellington-based artists and childhood friends Jack Kirifi, Moses Viliamu, and Mathew Peilua-Samuelu joined HNN’s Sunrise to talk about their powerful installation about the history of the slave trade in their native atolls of Tokelau. Half of the islands’ population were taken by Peruvian pirates, known as blackbirding in the Pacific Islands.

“Our people that were taken, they took a lot of able bodied people, I mean, some women and people have knowledge so there was a few generations that had to rejuvenate and recover the trauma that left behind,” Kirifi said. “It created a culture of caring for one another.”

“It’s a colonial mast or it’s a pirate ship sails. And we’re projecting our visuals of our story of our people back in 1863. So it’s sort of telling a story of what happened to our people and how we were taking, you know, crowds of stolen people was a big story for us, and we would like to tell it to the world,” Peilua-Samuelu said.

Since 2011, the airline has had lie-flat bed seats in economy . BI's reporter Taylor Rains previously booked a seat — known as a " Skycouch " — for a 17-hour flight and found that the added comfort made the long flight go by quickly.

BI's reporter Monica Humphries flew with Air New Zealand in business class . She was impressed by spacious seats with footrests, three-course meals, and Champagne service before takeoff.

Cathay Pacific Airways also received the website's excellence in long-haul travel award for South-East Asia.

No. 2 on the list, Korean Air, won the excellence in long-haul travel title for North Asia.

Rains reviewed her experience on a 12-hour flight in Korea Air's business class and said the cabin looked like a private jet with private, boxed-in quarters, and her seat felt more like a hotel room with a lie-flat bed, an amenity kit, and storage bins for her belongings.

1. Qatar Airways

In addition to being the world's No. 1 premium airline, Qatar Airways won the best business class award for the fifth year in a row and received the excellence in long-haul travel award for the Middle East.

AirlineRatings.com editor in chief Geoffrey Thomas said Qatar Airways was the No. 1 pick for many of the criteria, according to the company's website. In passenger reviews, Thomas noted the luxury airline scored far "ahead of all airlines, and its consistency and high standard of service delivery came through in the feedback."

BI previously reported that Qatar Airways has impressive business-class suites , lavish complimentary amenities, gourmet food, and luxurious turn-down service.
