Travelport ViewTrip is an online itinerary source that provides instant, real time access to travel plans 24 hours per day, 7 days per week. Its graphical detailed display lets travelers view or e-mail itineraries containing air, car, hotel, rail, cruise, and tour reservations, as well as access e-ticket information, weather, mapping, hotel images, flight information and travel related content. Itinerary details can be downloaded to an electronic calendar. A valid Worldspan record locator and the traveler’s last name are required to access and display itineraries via ViewTrip.

ViewTrip allows you to send e-mails with a link to the customer to view the itinerary in Travelport ViewTrip utilizing the agency’s defaults.

To open ViewTrip:

• Display an active PNR in Smartpoint.
• To open ViewTrip, you can either:
• Click the PNR record locator in the PNR Viewer and select Travelport ViewTrip from the pop-up box.
• From the Documentation menu, select Custom Itin .

Crafting a trip itinerary can be both fun and overwhelming. Which places are an absolute must-visit, and which ones can you skip? How much time should you spend at the art museum, and how close is it to that bookstore you want to check out? And how can you keep all your ideas and bookings neatly organized?

The best trip planner apps can help you answer those questions. I’ve found several that will help you discover the right places to go and organize your day-by-day itinerary in one handy place. Download these apps, and you can pitch your endless spreadsheets and Word docs into the recycle bin.

All of the following trip planner apps are free unless otherwise noted.

TripAdvisor

TripAdvisor ( iOS | Android ) is the granddaddy of trip planner apps. Unlike other apps that feature only major cities, TripAdvisor offers listings of both top attractions and hidden gems in just about every corner of the globe, along with restaurants, hotels, and vacation rentals. You can create customized itineraries by saving the places you’re interested in to the app’s new Trips feature . (Trips can be kept private or shared publicly.)

When you search for a city in the app, you’ll see a feed of other users’ trips, photos, videos, reviews, and articles about that destination, all offering ideas and inspiration. For more trip planning help, you can post your questions in the TripAdvisor forums , where destination experts offer in-depth advice.

Visit a City

Visit a City ( iOS | Android ) helps solve two common trip planning challenges: figuring out how long you need to spend at each place, and maximizing your vacation time by grouping nearby attractions together. When you select a destination, the app offers recommended sightseeing guides based on the number of days you plan to spend. For example, I put in that I was going to Paris, for three days and was given several itinerary options, including Top Attractions, Landmarks for Kids, Parks & Museums, Easy Going, and more. The app automatically puts nearby attractions together and lets you know how far apart they are (for instance, “three minutes by walking”). It also includes the estimated time that you’ll spend at each place.

You can edit the itinerary by changing the day you visit a place, revising the amount of time you spend there, or deleting the attraction altogether. (You’ll almost certainly have to do some editing, as the itineraries don’t include lunch or coffee breaks.) You can also book tours through the app and get general travel information about the destination, such as the best time of year to visit or tips for saving money.

The Best Sites to Book a Last Minute Vacation

CityMaps2Go

CityMaps2Go ( iOS | Android ) offers a handy offline maps that you can customize with personal points of interest. Even better, the app displays your location on the map whether you’re connected to data or Wi-Fi. The app includes thousands of offline maps from just about anywhere on Earth, which means it’s useful for travelers who don’t want to pay international data charges when heading overseas. 

You can create different lists for your trip (for example, separate lists for dining, bars, attractions, etc.), and the locations you add to the list will show up on your map. Info cards for each place include a review score, nearby accommodations, some basic information, and the ability to add notes of your own.

The fun part of trip planning is imagining all the cool places you’ll go. What’s not so fun? Figuring out the logistics of getting there. Fortunately, Rome2rio ( iOS | Android ) can help solve that problem. The app searches just about every mode of transportation—plane, train, subway, bus, ferry, taxi, Uber—to recommend the best way to get from point A to point B.

You can enter either two destinations within a given city or two points farther apart, and the app will display your options, including the time it’ll take to travel and the approximate cost. Note that the listings are for planning purposes only, and you can’t actually book your flights or tickets through the app.

TripIt ( iOS | Android ) is a fixture on “best travel apps” lists, and for good reason. It turns an inbox full of scattered booking confirmations and restaurant reservations into a single master itinerary that you can access offline, sync with your phone’s calendar, and share with loved ones. You simply forward each confirmation email to [email protected] and let the app do the rest.

Upgrade to TripIt Pro ($49/year) for other useful features such as real-time flight alerts, rewards program tracking, and the ability to locate alternate flights if your original plans are disrupted.

Culture Trip

The app arm of Culture Trip ( iOS | Android ) aims to bring travelers a little bit out of the mainstream (tagline: “For curious travelers”) by highlighting unique, off-the-beaten-path options in popular destinations. With recommendations for more than 200 destinations around the world, it’s a great way to bring more local perspective to your trip planning. 

The Culture Trip app uses the publication’s content as a starting point; say, an article on the Top 9 Dessert Spots in Amsterdam. While reading the article, you can save individual places to lists that you create and view their location on maps. You can also explore their curated “Culture Trips”—pre-made itineraries for small group travel bookable within the app.

5 Smartphone Essentials You Should Never Travel Without

TripScout ( iOS ) combines articles and videos from well-known travel publishers and local experts to form what it calls “a personalized, always up-to-date travel guide” for destinations around the world. Every point of interest mentioned in the content is mapped, so you can build a customized itinerary showing your intended destinations on a map.

TripScout can also personalize recommendations based on your travel dates, budget, interests, and even the number of people in your travel group. And like some of the other apps on this list, TripScout works entirely offline, potentially saving you from paying international data fees. The only downside? Android users are left out; TripScout is iOS only.

The two most common reasons why CTO can't issue a ticket are:

(1) GTC is declined. In this case, you would have received a message from the CTO. Please check your DTS reservation for messages and contact the Credit Card vendor to re-activate your credit card.

(2) Your reservation is not approved by your AO. In this case, contact your AO for immediate approval.

Go to MYTRIPANDMORE and view the EXPENSE tab for your ticket receipt. Please note, an itinerary is not a ticket, it is reservation information only . The EXPENSE tab WITH THE TICKET NUMBER will show if a ticket has been issued for your itinerary. You will normally receive your ticketed itinerary invoice TWO (2) to THREE (3) BUSINESS DAYS PRIOR TO DEPARTURE.

· If you have your WingGate Record Locator Number, you can go to MYTRIPANDMORE and the Record Locator Number and Last Name. You can use the information on the Expense Tab for reconciliation.

· If you don't have your Worldspan Record Locator Number, you can go to PAST INVOICE REQUEST . Please enter the First name, Last name, your WingGate GTS base & approximate travel date

Another way to calculate the cost for current fiscal year city pair contract fares and per diems, etc, can be found at ( www.cpsearch.fas.gsa.gov ).

You can go to our CONTACT US page and select "Submit Travel Orders" in the Request Type field.

(1) CTO didn't receive Travel Authorization to ticket.

(2) AO didn't approve your DTS reservations.

(3) Traveler's GTC is declined.

(4) Travelers didn't check CTO message(s) within DTS or email for information needed to issue a ticket.

Most non-GOV fares require instant ticketing and the fare is not guaranteed until the time of ticketing. If any segment(s) of your reservation are booked as non-GOV fares, the restrictions and penalties will be communicated to you in the REMARKS SECTION within traditional reservations and DTS messages sent to DTS users via comments by the CTO by using a 5.E- format. If you have received a message from CTO informing you that early ticketing is required, you need to contact your AO for authorization of early ticketing. Then your AO should contact the CTO authorizing an early ticketing.

If your credit card issue can't be resolved within a couple of hours, please contact your AO or TMO to determine whether you can use the Base CBA (Centrally Billed Account). If the credit card needs to be changed to CBA from your GTC, please request your TMO to contact the CTO for authorization.

· Go to airline's website 24 hours prior to departure and change seats.

· Call the airline directly and explain the situation and see whether the airline will accommodate your needs without charging for seats. Be sure to explain that you are an active duty military personnel and/or traveling with small children.

· Talk to a Gate Agent to see whether they can accommodate your needs.

· As a last resort, flight attendants will ask passengers to accommodate your needs once your family is on board. Most passengers are very understanding and will be happy to accommodate your family's need.

Of course, you can always pre-purchase seats as soon as tickets have been issued.

· You can pre-purchase seats by accessing the airline's website after ticketing. As you probably know, most carriers allow passengers to reserve seats at a premium.

· If you don't wish to pay extra to purchase seats, you can change seats by accessing the airline's website 24 hours prior to departure and/or at airport when checking in.

A travel itinerary outlines all elements of a trip, from hotel stops to destinations. It can be indispensable, whether you’re planning a weekend vacation or an extended road trip. A good itinerary gives a trip structure, and maximizes the amount you’ll be able to see and do. An itinerary is simple to develop and we're here to walk you through each and every step so you can plan an entire trip in an efficient and organized manner!

Making a Travel Itinerary

• Research your destination, including information on weather, local events, and activities.
• Make a list of everything you want to do and see on your trip, from highest to lowest priority.
• Create a calendar that includes travel dates and accommodation check-in times.
• Book activities that require advanced reservations and note them under the appropriate date.
• Moving down your list of activities, fit them into your itinerary schedule.
• Double-check opening times, dates, and other logistical information for each activity.

Planning Out Your Itinerary

• If you’re not sure where you want to go yet, create a trip inspiration board with all the places you’d like to go.
• Create a physical vision board , pin destinations on Pinterest, or save inspiring TikToks from travel influencers.

• Do you want a trip with days spent at four-star restaurants and nights spent in five-star hotels? Or are you more interested in finding local favorites and rustic B&Bs?
• Your vacation can be as expensive (or inexpensive) as you want. It ultimately comes down to what you can afford.

• Look into transportation for traveling to your destination and for getting around while you’re there.
• Find accommodation that fits your budget, like a hostel, AirBnB, or hotel, and make sure it’s near your top attractions.
• Research local events, holidays, and observances in the places you're traveling to. You may be able to witness or experience a cultural event that other travelers don't get to experience.
• If you’re traveling with a group of friends or another person, get feedback and ideas for your destinations from the group.

• Obtain local maps for the areas you will be exploring. It is also helpful to get schedules for bus and train services and numbers for local taxis.
• Make sure that the maps are up-to-date. Cities and other areas change often. A road that existed 10 years ago may no longer exist today.
• Use Google MyMaps to pin each attraction or eatery onto a map. On your trip, you can easily see routes between points of interest and what’s around you at any time.

• If you will be using airport transportation to get to your hotel, also include information about fees and hours of operation.

Formatting Your Itinerary in a Text File

• Using a text document to make your travel itinerary makes it easy to organize your information quickly.
• You can easily arrange information from your confirmation emails or online travel blogs on the page by copying and pasting it.

• Excursion/Activity arrangements : Tour companies and operators, reservation numbers, contact information, hours of operation, pick-up and drop/off locations, etc.
• Destination contact information : Landline, toll-free, and mobile phone numbers, email addresses, websites, physical addresses, etc.
• Personal emergency contact information : Your emergency contact’s name, relationship, physical address, phone number and email address. The address and number of your country’s closest embassy or consulate.

Here, I’ll be sharing my itinerary for one day in Lassen Volcanic National Park, detailing the route I took while on my 6 week west coast vanlife road trip.

This park, often overshadowed by its more famous Californian siblings, Yosemite and Sequoia, is a hidden gem that packs a wallop of natural attractions. In just one day, you can explore roaring fumaroles, hike through endless meadows, learn what a Cinder Cone is, and dip your toes in freezing lakes.

This easy-to-follow itinerary has been crafted for first-time visitors like you to streamline your visit so you won’t miss any of the must-see spots.

Quick Facts To Visiting Lassen Volcanic

Lassen Volcanic National Park, in northeastern California, is a gem among U.S. national parks, occupying over 106,000 acres of steaming fumaroles, wildflower-speckled meadows, clear mountain lakes, and numerous volcanoes.

As the centerpiece of the park, Lassen Peak is the largest plug dome volcano in the world and is part of one of the most unique volcanic areas on the planet.

Sample One Day in Lassen Volcanic Itinerary

A day in Lassen Volcanic is typically sufficient to experience this incredible place. So, for those pressed for time, here’s a sample itinerary for a day trip:

• Start at the Kohm Yah-mah-nee Visitor Center to get maps and information before starting the 30-mile main park scenic drive.
• Short detour at Sulphur Works , the park’s most accessible hydrothermal area.
• Hike the Bumpass Hell Trail , a 3-mile round-trip hike through the largest hydrothermal area in the park.
• Take a break or lunch at Lake Emerald or Lake Helen .
• Continue to the scenic drive, stopping at Lassen Peak, meadow views, and Devastated Area.
• Explore the Manzanita Lake and Reflection Lake Area for a walk or rent a kayak for a paddle on the water.
• Learn more about the park’s history at the Loomis Museum .

Things to Do in Lassen Volcanic National Park for a Day

Here are some of the best things to do in Lassen Volcanic National Park during your day trip:

1. Visitor Center & Start the Drive Through the Scenic Loop

Start your day at the Kohm Yah-mah-nee Visitor Center, where you can get a map and collect a National Park stamp. The center also has interactive exhibits, films, and ranger-led programs to learn more about the park’s geology, hydrothermal features, and history.

The main attraction of Lassen Volcanic National Park is its scenic drive. The 30-mile loop takes you through the best parts of the park, including Lassen Peak, Sulphur Works, Devastated Area, and more. You can also stop at designated picnic areas and take hikes along the way.

2. Sulphur Works

With steaming fumaroles (steam and volcanic-gas vents) and mud pots, Sulphur Works is a unique and fascinating area. This is the most accessible hydrothermal area of the park, located right off the main road. With its remarkable geothermal features and sulfurous smell, Sulphur Works showcases the park’s volcanic nature up close.

You can walk along the boardwalk to find boiling pools of muddy water and steam vents known as fumaroles, caused by the heat from the magma below the Earth’s crust. Also, it gets pretty sulphuric smelling here, aka that pungent rotten egg aroma.

3. Bumpass Hell Trail

For a real taste of Lassen Volcanic National Park’s geothermal action, take a hike along the Bumpass Hell Trail. Named after Kendall Vanhook Bumpass, a pioneer who severely burnt his leg after falling into a boiling pool, this 3-mile round-trip trail showcases the park’s largest hydrothermal area.

The trail begins at the Bumpass Hell parking area and winds its way through mountainous terrain, with incredible views of Lassen Peak and the surrounding highlands.

As the path descends, you’ll notice a change in the landscape as meadows give way to an otherworldly expanse of bubbling mud pots and steaming fumaroles.

The boardwalk lets you safely walk right on top of this geothermal wonderland.

4. Lake Helen & Lake Emerald

Lake Helen and Lake Emerald are two of Lassen Volcanic National Park’s prettiest bodies of water, at the foothills of its rocky peaks.

Located at an elevation of 8,200 feet, the deep blue Lake Helen is often covered in snow, even in the summer. This lake presents awesome views of Lassen Peak and Reading Peak.

There is a parking area nearby and picnic tables, making it a perfect lunch spot. Its icy cold water may not be suitable for swimming, but it’s a photogenic locale you won’t want to miss.

Lake Emerald

Slightly further along is Lake Emerald, another high-altitude lake with a vivid emerald color that gives it its name. The lake’s hue varies with the light and it’s particularly pretty at sunrise and sunset. You can reach Emerald Lake by taking a short detour off the main park road.

5. Lassen Peak

Lassen Peak is the most famous part of the park, known for its volcanic activity and eruptions in the early 1900s. This volcano, along with Sulphur Works and other hydrothermal areas, are all reminders that this area is still alive and bubbling with geothermal activity.

You can hike to the summit of Lassen Peak via a 5-mile round-trip trail. The hike is pretty challenging and definetly not doable on a day hike unless it is the only thing you plan on doing.

6. Optional: King’s Creek Falls Hike

King’s Creek Falls is a waterfall cascading down over 40 feet of rocky terrain, which is especially mighty in the spring, when the snowmelt feeds the falls.

The trail to King’s Creek Falls is a moderate 2.5-mile round trip hike that takes you through meadows, thick forests, and rocky terrain.

Begin at the King’s Creek Picnic Area, and follow the trailhead sign leading you through the meadow. The trail splits after about a mile, where you can choose between the horse trail or the cascades trail. The horse trail is easier but longer, while the cascades trail is steeper but offers a closer view of the cascading creek. These trails form a loop, so you can do one path each way.

The trail ends at a viewing platform which provides an exquisite view of the waterfall.

But, if you are running low on time, this is not the hike you want to spend time on since there’s still so much to see.

7. Devastated Area Interpretive Trail

In 1915, Mount Lassen erupted and spewed ash and pumice across the surrounding area. This event is now known as the Devastated Area, a stark landscape that showcases how powerful volcanic eruptions can be.

There’s an easy 0.25 trail that takes you through this desolate landscape, with interpretive signs along the way explaining the eruption and its effects on the surrounding environment.

8. Manzanita Lake & Reflection Lake

Last but not least, wrap up your day at Manzanita Lake and Reflection Lake, two lakes ideal for those golden hour photographs.

Manzanita Lake

Manzanita Lake is set alongside Lassen Peak, reflecting on its calm waters. The Lake Loop trail is a relaxing 1.5-mile stroll around the lake, perfect for all fitness levels and accessible year-round.

Bald eagles, American white pelicans, and ospreys are often sighted. Fishing is allowed (catch-and-release only), and you can rent kayaks, canoes, or stand-up paddleboards during the summer.

Reflection Lake

Your final stop is Reflection Lake, a small gem with reflections of Lassen Peak and Chaos Crags. It’s just a short walk from the main park road.

9. Loomis Museum

If it’s not closed yet, tack on a visit to the Loomis Museum, filled with exhibits that delve into the volcanic history of the park, its geology, and its flora and fauna. You’ll find age-old photographs, artifacts, and geological displays, as well as a bookstore.

The museum is located near Manzanita Lake, making it a convenient stop before heading out. It’s open seasonally, so check the park’s website for current hours.

Outside the museum, there’s also a self-guided trail, the Ridge Lakes Loop Trail. This moderate 1.1-mile trail starts and ends at the museum.

Where to Stay in Lassen Volcanic National Park

If you’re planning a visit to Lassen Volcanic National Park, you’ll have several accommodation options. Outside of the national park, Redding is about an hour away, offering a range of hotels and lodges.

Drakesbad Guest Ranch:

Book a room at a beautiful ranch, Drakesbad Guest Ranch . The price per night actually includes meals. With amenities like a swimming pool and hot springs, Drakesbad Guest Ranch is a great choice for those seeking a pampered getaway.

Manzanita Lake Cabins:

If you’re on a budget, the Manzanita Lake Cabins offer a more affordable option. These cozy cabins are in a peaceful forest setting near Manzanita Lake. While the cabins do not have attached bathrooms, there are shared restrooms and showers nearby.

Lassen Volcanic National Park has eight different campsites scattered throughout the park. Camping fees range from $20 to $26 per night, depending on the campsite and the amenities provided.

Travel Tip! Reservations are recommended, especially during the peak summer season.

More Than One Day in Lassen Volcanic National Park

In one day you can see the most accessible parts of the park along the scenic drive. Here are some additional attractions and hikes to consider during a multi-day itinerary :

• Cinder Cone: See views of the Cinder Cone Volcano and the Painted Dunes. The 4-mile round trip hike takes you through a surreal landscape of volcanic ash and colorful volcanic rocks.
• Devil’s Kitchen: This hike leads you to an area filled with mud pots, steam vents, and hot springs.
• Lassen Peak: For a challenging adventure, tackle the hike up Lassen Peak , the tallest volcano in the park. The 5-mile round trip hike rewards you with panoramic views from the summit.
• Burney Falls: Located nearby in McArthur- Burney Falls Memorial State Park, Burney Falls is a beautiful waterfall that cascades 129 feet down into a pool, surrounded by greenery.

Best Time to Visit

The park is most accessible and enjoyable during the summertime and early fall. This is when all the trails are open and the weather is generally more pleasant outside.

During the winter months, most of the park is closed due to heavy snowfall and road closures.

Getting to Lassen Volcanic

Most people visit Lassen Volcanic as part of a larger California road trip adventure. But, if you’re flying, the closest airport is Redding Municipal Airport . Flights here are limited and can be expensive. If you’re looking for more frequent and affordable flights, fly into Sacramento International Airport or Reno International Airport .

When planning your trip to Lassen Volcanic National Park, it’s important to keep a few tips in mind to ensure a safe and enjoyable visit. Here are some helpful tips:

• Stay on designated paths and boardwalks: Lassen Volcanic National Park is home to geothermal activity areas, which can be dangerous. To avoid accidents and severe burns, always stay on designated paths and boardwalks.
• Stay hydrated: Drink plenty of water , especially on longer trails and hiking routes. Carry a refillable water bottle with you.
