Gandhi Sagar Wildlife Sanctuary is situated in northwestern Madhya Pradesh, with one of its boundaries running along the border of Rajasthan. The sanctuary was notified in 1974 and is spread over an area of 368sq.km. Its vast expanse lies within the Mandsaur and Neemuch districts of Madhya Pradesh. River Chambal flows through the sanctuary, dividing it into two parts.

A major part of the sanctuary consists of vast open landscapes with sparse vegetation and rocky terrain, with small patches of dense forests here and there. The principal tree species found in the Gandhi Sagar Wildlife Sanctuary are Khair, Salai, Kardhai, Dhawda, Tendu, Palash and the like.

Herbivores like Chinkara, Nilgai and Spotted Deer, and carnivores like the Indian Leopard, Striped Hyena and Jackal are found in good numbers in the region. The reservoir also has a good population of crocodiles, fish, otters and turtles. Gandhi Sagar Wildlife Sanctuary and the reservoir is also a designated Important Bird and Biodiversity Area (IBA) as it boasts a large bird diversity with healthy populations.

The sanctuary has attracted more attention after being chosen as a favourable site for the reintroduction of cheetahs in India. Gandhi Sagar has vast open spaces and grasslands interspersed with scrubs, which is the ideal landscape for the cheetah. There is a continuous process of translocating the Spotted Deer from other forest areas to augment the prey base here.

Getting there.

Indore is the nearest airport, which is approximately 275km away.

Bhawanimandi (53km), Jhalawar (53km) and Shamgarh (85km) are the closest railheads.

Mandsaur, Neemuch and Kota are the nearest cities, all within a range of 100-130km. There are two gateways to reach Gandhi Sagar, Rampura and Bhanpura, which lie on either side of the dam.

Best Time To Visit

Monsoon is a great time to visit Gandhi Sagar. The dam, when its gates are open, is a sight to behold! Numerous smaller waterfalls also form during the rainy season.

Winter is the best time to visit Gandhi Sagar. During these months, the climate remains pleasant, and it is easy to explore the region. It is also the perfect time for birdwatching.

The summer months are harsh at the Gandhi Sagar Wildlife Sanctuary. Water scarcity sees animals congregating near water bodies, increasing the chances of good wildlife sightings.

The construction of the Gandhi Sagar Dam in 1960 saw a vast region submerged in its backwaters and was the reason for carving out this sanctuary. The dam was responsible for adding a new dimension to the region's topography.

The sanctuary also houses sites of great historical and archaeological significance and is a perfect getaway for the weekend tourist.

Madhya Pradesh Tourism runs a very scenic property with a large garden that looks out at the Gandhi Sagar backwaters. Situated atop a hillock, MPT Hinglaj Resort has more than 10 A/C rooms. The charges are reasonable and there is even a working restaurant that will cater to your gastro requirements. The MPT Hinglaj Resort is located on the Gandhisagar-Bhanpura Road, about 7km from Gandhi Sagar. Prices start from ₹3,500 onwards.

The forest rest house at Rampur Pathar has two rooms with basic amenities. You can make a booking by contacting the Mandsaur DFO.

+ Add Bricks

  • The most exciting and entertaining thing to do is a boat safari along River Chambal, where one can see plenty of bird and mammal species.
  • The cliffs towering along the river are nesting sites for the Indian Vulture and large colonies of Cliff Swallows.
  • You can also witness cormorants in huge numbers as they collectively hunt for fish.
  • The Smooth-coated Otter is another major attraction and is present in good numbers in the Chambal River around the dam, although they keep moving along the banks.
  • The Rock Eagle-Owl and the Brown Fish-Owl can also be seen amongst the rock cliffs. You will need good sighting skills to spot them as they keep themselves expertly camouflaged.
  • Gandhi Sagar Wildlife Sanctuary has recently opened up four designated areas for trekking. All four routes are picturesque and are perfect for birdwatching. If lucky, you might even come across a few wildlife sightings. You have to contact the Superintendent or Game Range Officer to obtain permission to enter the park. A group of at least ten members is compulsory, with a fee of ₹2,000 per person. The monsoon and winter months are ideal for trekking in the sanctuary.
  • The Hinglajgarh Fort is an ancient fort situated inside the sanctuary, estimated to be built during the 7th and 8th centuries by Pratihara rulers. The view from the top shows the vast wilderness of the Gandhi Sagar Wildlife Sanctuary. The Takli river, flowing alongside the fort, has numerous temples and sculptures on its banks, dating to the 10th and 11th centuries. The temple of Goddess Hinglaj Mata is one of great religious importance. Many of the old sculptures found in the vicinity are now preserved in a small museum here. The Archeological Survey of India (ASI) is responsible for the fort and the museum.
  • Chaturbhuj Temple or Chaturbhujnath Mandir is a place of religious significance and houses an old idol of Lord Vishnu. The adjoining stream, Chaturbhuj Nala, named after the temple, has on its banks several rock shelters that house rock paintings that are 30,000–40,000 years old. An ASI-protected monument, these rock shelters are maintained by the ASI and the forest department. You can spot tigers, rhinoceroses, camels and other animals in these ancient paintings.
  • Sri Dharmrajeshwar Temple is an ancient Hindu cave temple situated around 87km from the Gandhisagar Dam and 80km from the MPT Hinglaj Resort at Gandhi Sagar. Carved out of natural rock, the temple is a brilliant example of Indian rock-cut architecture. The main temple houses a huge Shiva linga and an idol of Lord Vishnu. The main temple is surrounded by seven smaller shrines dedicated to various deities.
  • Takaji is where you can find a temple of Lord Shiva, and during the monsoon, a beautiful waterfall too.
  • Chaurasigarh is where you can watch the vast expanse of the backwaters of River Chambal. Besides housing the ruins of an old fort, it is the perfect spot to watch the sunset as it disappears into River Chambal.

What To Pack

  • It is advised to keep sufficient cash in hand.
  • Be sure to carry a good pair of binoculars if you want to go birdwatching.
  • Sturdy shoes are necessary, especially when exploring the Gandhi Sagar landscape on foot.
  • Don’t forget to pack dry food items and snacks, as you will be spending plenty of time outdoors.
  • Keep essential medicines and drinking water with you at all times.

For Photographers

  • Carry a medium telephoto (200-400mm) lens to photograph wildlife.

Good To Know

  • The roads inside the sanctuary are motorable and personal vehicles are allowed in most areas. Since there are no registered safari jeeps at the sanctuary, it is better to travel by your own vehicle.
  • There is limited mobile coverage, with BSNL being the only network with a steady connection.
  • There is only one ATM in the area, near the 03 number bus stop.
  • There are public restrooms within the sanctuary at designated areas.

Budget Per Person

  • A two-night stay is highly recommended for the complete experience at the Gandhi Sagar Wildlife Sanctuary.
  • A one-night stay at the MPT Hinglaj Resort in Gandhisagar will cost around ₹3000 per person. The price is inclusive of meals but excludes transportation.
  • The forest rest house will cost ₹2,000 per person per day (inclusive of food).

Gandhisagar, The Second Home For Cheetahs, Is A Hidden Gem In MP That You Must Visit

Bobins Abraham

India is set to welcome the third batch of African Cheetahs before the end of 2023. And unlike the past two batches of big cats translocated from Namibia and South Africa, the third batch of Cheetahs will not be housed in Madhya Pradesh's Kuno National Park (KNP).

In September, SP Yadav, Additional Director General of Forests at the Environment Ministry and the chief of the National Tiger Conservation Authority (NTCA) had said that the next batch of cheetahs will be imported from South Africa and introduced into Madhya Pradesh’s Gandhi Sagar wildlife sanctuary.

Where is Gandhi Sagar Wildlife Sanctuary?

Spread across Mandsaur and Nimach districts in northwestern Madhya Pradesh , close to the border of Rajasthan, the Gandhi Sagar Wildlife Sanctuary was one of the two sites prepared to welcome the next batch of Cheetahs.

"The site preparation at the Gandhi Sagar Wildlife Sanctuary is going in full swing. I'm expecting that it will be completed by the end of November or December," Yadav had said.

Spread across an area of 368.62 km2, Gandhi Sagar was notified as a wildlife sanctuary in the year 1974.

Gandhi Sagar Dam

Besides the wildlife sanctuary, the area is also home to the Gandhi Sagar Dam in Mandsaur District, one of the four major dams built on the Chambal River.

Good experience with mp t hinglaj

Pulak Vijayvargiya

I went to mp t hinglaj with my extended family. We stayed there for 2 days. Rooms were near and clean and the view from room was breath taking. Sheets and towels were good as new. The staff over there is really very friendly and soft spoken. They are always at your service. The food was awesome. They even let us decide the menu which they prepared really well. From cook to servers they are really very nice and polite and you could see their efforts in making you happy. This gives you a very special feeling. The only thing which needs improvement is the walkway outside the balcony is bit dirty. Apart from it everything was lovely. I would highly re-comment to visit mp t hinglaj for vacation.

good location and excellent food quality

MPT Hinglaj Resort, Gandhi Sagar is located at riverside, location was good, we booked river facing room and there was a awesome view from balcony. room was clean and spacious. They provide tasty food in good variety and quality also. MPT Hinglaj Resort, Gandhi Sagar manager and staff members were too friendly and polite. pool was not cleaned and not opened for swimming because of rain 😒 and yeah during day time there were too many visitors from local in garden area so privacy was not there for couple atleast during daytime not they are following social distancing. although it was a good experience to visit there 👍

Subhayan Mandal

Stayed at 205 (top floor, chambal block. The room was clean, spacious, artistically decorated with rocknpaining replicas. Washroom was big with running hot & cold water. The view of gandhisagar from the balcony was spellbinding. The staff was courteous & cooperative. I travel-led with a kid of less than 2 years. They tried to cook for her separately. The dining hall staff made great food, served copious amounts. We even got b/f served in room. Room service was prompt even in evening hours. Wholeheartedly recommend to travellers on vacation/staycation/sightseeing.

Ambience, location and food

Resort is so pleasantry and peaceful. Very nicely maintained and decorated with natural plants and trees. Food is healthy and fresh, though the variety of items are less but they are tasty. Room size is big facilitated with mini fridge, sofa set along with tv. Balcony is river facing which is the most amazing thing here. One can spend nights talking to his/her partner. There's a gazebo here where families can org-anise party and games which is also good thing. I say its a best and must visit place if you are in radius of 150km

Lovely place, super amazing staff

Devesh Chawla

Stayed at the property over the weekend with a group of friends. Had a really wonderful time. Rustic property in middle of jungle. The view is amazing. Since it was a rainy season, so flies and insects was an issue. But i can understand that it being a jungle property, this issue will be there in monsoons. The staff is very friendly and hospitable. They are willing to help you with a smile always. Had a great time

You must ch k out this resort if u want complete isolation from rest of world with beauty of nature ( gadhi sagar dam view from room + gandhi sagar sanctuary)

The resort was quite good, green, and peaceful. The room was very spacious with a huge balcony. The staff was humble and there are a lot of activities to there like table tennis, swimming, etc. Perfect place to spend a day or two with friends, family. The only con is that the network connectivity is very poor in the resort area and they do not provide wi-fi in rooms.

Great place with great reservoir

PIYUSH RATHI

Sup b place to stay and chill out, great hospitality by mp tourism with great food and very good personalized services. Great green place full of green trees and flowers. MP Tourism Board to organise Gandhi Sagar Floating Festival, Kuno Forest Festival in state

Gandhi Sagar Floating Festival

Madhya Pradesh Tourism Board is organising two new mega festivals Gandhi Sagar Floating Festival and Kuno Forest Festival in the coming two months for the tourists of the country and the state.

Principal Secretary Tourism and Culture and Managing Director Tourism Board Sheo Shekhar Shukla has said that Kuno Forest Festival is being organised for the first time in the state from December 1 to celebrate the rich culture and diverse wildlife of the state.

Before this, the second edition of the Gandhi Sagar Floating Festival will be organised from October 27. There will be cultural programs and an unmatched experience of exciting activities in the festivals being organised by the Tourism Department and Forest Department in collaboration with Lalluji & Sons. The tent city has been developed to provide a luxury glamping experience, along with various activities to promote local art and culture, he added.

On the other hand, Chief Wildlife Warden Aseem Shrivastava said that the message of wildlife conservation would be spread through these festivals. The message of wildlife conservation would make more and more people aware through a chain reaction. Through these festivals, people would get to know the wildlife closely and understand their important role in the ecosystem of nature.

According to an official release, the second edition of the Gandhi Sagar Floating Festival will be held from October 27 on the serene backwaters of Gandhi Sagar near Mandsaur. This festival located near Gandhi Sagar Wildlife Sanctuary will be a perfect amalgamation of adventure, entertainment and culture. One can enjoy exciting activities like kayaking, jet skiing, hot air ballooning, horse riding, air gun shooting, speed boating, parasailing and other recreational activities.

During the jungle safari, one will also get a chance to see the rich wildlife of the area. The cultural heritage of Madhya Pradesh will be promoted with traditional art, cultural programs and delicious dishes. At Gandhi Sagar Forest Retreat (Tent City), tourists will be able to experience luxury glamping in well-equipped and all-weather tents, it added.

The release further read that the Kuno Forest Festival, starting from 1st December, would be an exciting journey. After the arrival of cheetahs again in India after about 72 years, this festival would give the best experience of the beauty of the forests through Kuno National Park. Sheopur Fort, Dob Kund and ancient caves dating back to the Mughal period would bring one back to life.

One can learn about the wildlife through guided safaris, and see leopards, deer, bluebucks and migratory birds present in the area. Kuno Festival will not just be an adventure but a memorable experience to last a lifetime, it added.

It also states that both Kuno Forest Festival and Gandhi Sagar Floating Festival will provide a new experience. In luxury tent cities built amidst nature, one will be able to experience a modern and comfortable lifestyle amidst the beautiful natural scenes of Madhya Pradesh.

Very beautiful and huge property with all possible amenities in a jungle what one family requires on a vacation. Approach is very easy and has well done roads to reach. Staff is helping and prompt and very well behaved. Rooms are big and with a very beautiful look of the back water out of the window /balcony. Pool is decent and one extra pool for toddlers. Sports activities has Table tennis, Pool / snooker, carrom.

I am disappointed with mpt hinglaj resort. The staff as we know is divided in two shifts. Staff of one shift is cooperative and humble. While on the other hand morning staff is rude, irresponsible and annoying. If we talk about food, they don't provide variety in the menu. There's no variation in the menu any time. Taste is manageable but services n menu r not up to the mark. Scenic beauty around may be good in rainy season but as we visited in summers it was too hot and forest area was completely dry. If we talk about costing than as per my view I don't think that it's worth paying this amount here but this is one n only resort in this area so if u r travelling here than u have no options other than mpt resort so while travelling here just be mentally prepared for so-so experience. N with this mental preparation u would be happy with your trip.

I booked a river facing cottage, the place is calm and rejuvenating. Visited in mid March Neither too cold nor too hot climate. Now coming on to the welcome part, really cold welcome....no welcome drinks or water was served, checking in took a while as rooms were not ready even at 02:00 pm Room lighting too dim, also u'll have to face the issue of very small mosquito and flying insects near river facing rooms. On asking about the cruise at reception got to know that it is Rs 275/- per head for 45 min ride.... minimum 30 person required to get the cruise going.... If u want it for a smaller group at reception it was told that we could personally book it for our group at Rs 10000/- for one hour.....(thank God we didn't book it at that time) But on reaching boat club the tarrifs were Rs 200/- per head And got it booked for our group for Rs 6000/- only.... Commission commission and commission It's all about.

A little pricey but that includes 3 meals too. The location is awesome but there should be a walk arranged till waters. The staff is very friendly and the rooms are tastefully done.’’’’ Food is good but can still be improved.

As per tariff its very expensive as they are using their location advantage only. Room fixtures are not in proper working condition. Housekeeping is very poor. Pros River view rooms, greenery, staff Cons Dusty rooms Hard pillows Extra matter Rs. 2000/- on AP plan is expensive bcus mattress cost is not comfortable, it's for drivers The buffet is very limited but they are charging a lot. No variety This is the govt. Property. Wi fi is very good but if there is a power cut then wifi is not working on the generator. While we stayed there was a power cut of 10 hours. So how can one survive when the network in this area is also low. Probably this property will looks its charm in next 2-3 years bcus of govt. Tag

Moscow's Strategic Focus on Enhancing Tourism: A Safari Plus Exclusive Interview with Ms. Anastasia Popova

According to  Moscow City Tourism Committee , the capital of Russia with its diverse range of products is fast emerging as one of the most interesting and productive cities for the travel-trade, both for leisure and business travel. The Moscow City Tourism Committee is the official organization that promotes Moscow as a tourist destination.

mp tourism gandhi sagar

Ms. Popova highlighted Moscow's commitment to providing a more inviting and convenient experience for tourists, with a special emphasis on Indian travelers. Moscow aims not only to position itself as a cultural capital but also as a thriving business hub, actively seeking trade partnerships and welcoming tourists and vacationers alike.

India ranks among the top three countries visiting Moscow for both leisure and MICE (Meetings, Incentives, Conferences, and Exhibitions) purposes. The Moscow City Tourism Committee has intensified its collaboration, organizing familiarization tours for delegates and facilitating business trips to showcase the city's tourism potential.

Ms. Popova discussed the city's efforts to tap into the growing potential of the MICE segment. In collaboration with NIMA, Moscow conducted a familiarization trip for MICE tour operators last year, and this year, they have initiated conferences with corporate clients. The city has also undertaken extensive promotional activities in India, including roadshows and participation in travel and wedding expos.

Moscow is also catering to the wedding segment, having recently hosted a grand Indian wedding. To better serve Indian tourists, the city has improved travel logistics, provided better access to information, and tailored accommodations to meet cultural and culinary preferences.

In 2023, the city witnessed an increase in Indian visitors. These initiatives collectively contribute to Moscow's goal of offering an enriched and enjoyable experience for Indian tourists, reinforcing the city's position as a premier global destination.
