Love on Safari

When reserved web designer Kira (Lacey Chabert) inherits a beautiful animal reserve in South Africa, she must travel there for the reading of her uncle’s will. Upon arrival, she meets the handsome park ranger Tom (Jon Cor) who is the exact opposite of her steady boyfriend. Along with Tom and Ally (Brittany Bristow), the reserve’s other ranger, Kira explores her surroundings and begins to not only fall in love with the animal reserve, but with Tom as well. Soon, Kira is faced with a difficult decision: sell the reserve to a ruthless competitor, or risk everything for this new world. To make the right choice, Kira realizes that sometimes she must get lost to find her own way to happiness.

Love on Safari: Cast and Filming Locations

‘Love on Safari’ follows Kira, whose plan to go on a vacation to Arizona is drastically sidelined when she learns that she has inherited the Ukuthula, a scenic wildlife reserve in South Africa. She then travels there for the reading of her uncle’s will. After she reaches the reserve she is in awe of what she witnesses, the plains of vegetation and wildlife, inclusive of her favorites—elephants. She is also taken by the safari ranger, Tom. Even though she came with plans to sell the reserve, every day, she keeps finding more and more reasons not to. 

The conflict is not too far away as her boyfriend from Chicago soon arrives and tries to cut a deal for the reserve behind her back. Kira is then posited with the conflict of the reserve and that of her love life. 

Love on Safari Filming Locations 

‘Love on Safari’ is a Hallmark film whose crown and glory resides in its exotic filming locations. Several locations in South Africa were used to shoot the film. 

Johannesburg, South Africa

The wildlife reserve in the film, owned by the protagonist Kira, is depicted through the Brookers Wildlife Reserve in Johannesburg. In an interview, Lacey Chabert, who plays the role of Kira said , “Everything was real. We shot it at this beautiful wildlife preserve, and it was an incredible experience to be so up-close and personal with the animals. Obviously, we were very respectful of them…The people of South Africa are so kind and good-hearted, and they were so welcoming, it really was a dream come true to be there.” Thus, it seems like filming at the wildlife reserve was a unique experience for the team.

Glen Afric Country Lodge, Hartbeespoort

Glen Afric Country Lodge is 40 minutes from Johannesburg and is also situated in the lap of nature. The primary highlights of the Lodge are elephant interaction, bush game drive, or simply sitting back and soaking in the flora and fauna. Apart from Glen Afric Country Lodge, Leopard Lodge in Hartbeespoort was also used to film some scenes.

Bela Bela, South Africa 

An elephant sanctuary in Bela Bela was also used to film several scenes wherein Kira interacts with her favorite giant animals. Situated just an hour away from Pretoria, it is a popular spot for tourists seeking to spend some time with elephants.

Love on Safari Cast 

Lacey Chabert plays the lead role of Kira and is someone well acquainted with Hallmark movies. She has featured in ‘A Little Piece of Heaven,’ ‘A Royal Christmas,’ ‘Ghosts of Girlfriend’s Past,’ ‘ Mean Girls ,’ ‘What if God Were the Sun?,’ ‘Moonlight in Vermont,’ and several other films. 

Jon Cor stars as Tom. The actor, who is also a martial artist has starred in several works like, ‘ Dark Matter ,’ ‘Freeform’s Shadowhunters: The Mortal Instruments,’ and other works. Interestingly, he is also the author of the book ‘Heat.’ The other actors in the film include Brittany Bristow, Jonathan Roxmouth, Abigail Kubeka, Francis Chouler, and Barbora Tellinger, among several others.

This enchanting Hallmark Original movie is shot in South Africa’s Brookers Reserve in Johannesburg and the elephant sanctuary in Belabela. The scenery is stunning, with amazing wildlife roaming freely over the beautiful terrain. The orchestral music is perfect for highlighting the exotic locations. The casting is excellent and the performances believable and true to the characters. The audience is taken on a wonderful journey into a world of exotic animals, stunning African landscape and culture, with very high production value throughout.

Kira Slater is an up and coming web designer who is stunned to learn that she has just inherited a wildlife reserve from her late Great Uncle. She knows nothing about wildlife reserves and travels to South Africa with full intention of quickly selling the Ukuthula Reserve and returning to her comfortable uncomplicated life in Chicago.

The only buyer is exploitive and greedy hotel mogul, Artie Harrington, and Brad, her Chicago boyfriend, is encouraging her to sell. Everyone is upset and Tom (Jon Cor), the Chief Ranger, decides to trick Kira into falling in love … with the reserve.

As Kira gets to know and understand the importance of this reserve, not just for the animals, but to the dedicated employees who care deeply for her uncle’s life’s work and legacy, she realizes that selling might not be the best decision for anyone. When Brad arrives unexpectedly at the reserve and goes behind Kira’s back to meet with Artie Harrington posing as her financial advisor, she’s had enough and breaks off with him.

Kira, together with the passionate game ranger, Tom, his sister Alley (Brittany Bristow), and the lodge bookkeeper Lwazi (Abigail Kubeka), create a brilliant plan to ultimately save the reserve from bankruptcy. And Tom and Kira?

Fast-forward to today, and people enthusiastically cross the street to meet Abbey, to take pictures, to tell her how much they love her and her relationship with David, whom we introduced her to in season one. This represents not just validation of Abbey’s experience and appreciation of her unique personality, but a celebration and acceptance of difference. This love for the cast has been across the board. In my 20 years working in this industry, I haven’t seen such overwhelming positivity and support for the participants in a docu- reality series .

As a society, we are gaining more understanding of what autism is and isn’t, but there are still myths and misconceptions. The best way to bust them is to introduce audiences to a diverse group of real people, and hear from them in their own voices. By telling intimate, character-driven stories, viewers get to know our participants and engage with who they are and what makes them tick. With engagement comes empathy and understanding, and with understanding comes normalization.

As a director, what I love about being able to make the series is twofold. Firstly, the opportunity to increase autism and disability representation and awareness. There is a lack of representation of people with disabilities in the media generally, let alone showing people in a lighthearted, celebratory way.

When we first started filming Love on the Spectrum back in Australia in 2019, we were making the series for our public broadcaster, the Australian Broadcasting Corporation, or ABC, as we know it. I had come up with the idea for the series after making a different show, also for ABC, about people with disabilities looking for employment, and highlighting the skills people can bring to a workplace. Having spoken to many young autistic adults while making that series, I was struck by how many people were interested in dating and finding love but were having trouble. Many of them had never even been on a date. Of course everyone on the spectrum is different, and there are people who are in meaningful relationships, people who don’t have trouble dating, but based on the people we were talking to, there was a lack of support and awareness. This felt like an interesting space to explore, and an area where we could potentially help people out as well as make an engaging and insightful series.

It has been quite the ride for us all seeing the series do so well. It’s so nice to see people who have been underrepresented on our screens be so universally loved and appreciated for just being themselves. Seeing our lovely cast treat each other with honesty, kindness and respect inspires me to try to be a better person, and hopefully audiences are taking some of this away with them.

All productions come with their own set of challenges, and as a team we want to make sure we take into account the individual needs of each castmember, ensuring that their participation is an enjoyable and positive experience. We film this series in a unique way, scheduling a longer shoot period and averaging only a few days of filming a week to allow us to film with our cast when it works for them. We are a fluid, flexible team always ready to turn on a dime and tell our cast’s stories as they happen, which means we start someone’s story and have no idea where it will take us. It’s a logistical puzzle making the show as we film across the country, flitting back and forth between cities, but we believe it makes for the best series. Our shooting crew is very small, and we keep our footprint to a bare minimum. I shoot second camera, we don’t use lights, we want people to feel as comfortable as possible, and the less a space feels like a set, the better.

Many people ask me: How do you go about working with vulnerable people when making the show? My response is, don’t assume someone is vulnerable just because they are autistic. The autism spectrum is incredibly diverse, just like the neurotypical population. And that’s probably the biggest thing I hope people take away from watching this series: Don’t judge someone based on a label.

For a long time, there was a very stereotypical representation of what autism looked like in traditional media. For Cian O’Clery and Karina Holden , Love on the Spectrum was a perfect opportunity to showcase a diverse cast of neurodivergent people. “It’s important to be able to have people tell their own stories and show that autism is something that represents different needs for different people,” says Holden.

DEADLINE: What was the journey to bring the series from Australia to the U.S.?

KARINA HOLDEN : It’s been six, seven years, so it’s been a long journey, but what was brilliant is when Netflix came on board and the Australian series launched in 2020, it was amazing to see how the global audience embraced the concept. And the American series that we’ve been producing is so true to what we originally created.

CIAN O’CLERY : When we were asked to make a U.S. season of something, we had some little concerns that they might want to put some bells and whistles on it and change up the tone and style to make it feel bigger, but Netflix was just a really great partner in supporting us telling the stories in the way that we did in the Australian series. We’ve been telling character-led stories in a certain way for a while, and I think one of the great things about this series, and the way we tell it, is that we do have rules in how we tell the stories and what the grammar is. 

DEADLINE: How did you find the cast?

O’CLERY : Imagine the way you would cast a usual typical reality series, and we do everything completely different. We cast it as a team of producers, so we don’t actually hire a separate casting team who does all of the work and then sends you tapes. We actually put out a call ourselves. We basically try and get the word out to as many people as possible that we’re looking for people who might be interested in dating and looking for love, and might want a bit of support along the way. And we put the word out through autism organizations, social groups, individuals, experts in the field, influencers in the autism community, whoever. We get a lot of people writing in and really wanting to be part of the series, which is great and it just shows that there’s a want and a need out there from a lot of people on the spectrum who want to date and find love and relationships.

HOLDEN : I think the other thing that’s really important in that casting process is making sure that the representation of autism is really broad. Until recently, and it’s through series like  Love on the Spectrum  in particular that this is changing, there’s been a sense that autism looks a certain way, and it’s important to be able to have people tell their own stories and show that autism is something that represents different needs for different people. There’s a lot of people who operate very independently who want to date neurodiverse people, or neurotypical people, who have as many wants and needs as diverse as the spectrum itself. So, that’s something that we really have to take into consideration as well in wanting to make sure that the show itself is something that increases the move away from the stereotypical view of what autism is.

O’CLERY : The best thing for us is being able to present all these different voices and all this incredibly diverse group of people that are real people on the spectrum that have not really been represented in traditional media. And what’s so great about it too is that the cast is being so loved and adored by audiences around the world just for being themselves, and that there’s people now who are reality stars, who are autistic characters from  Love on the Spectrum .

HOLDEN : Especially that journey for some of them who have been bullied and misunderstood, and now to have the support of an entire country and, in some places, be globally recognized because they have this desire for love and they have the support of this production team around them as they’re going on this dating journey. They have their dreams out there for us to all experience and people are rooting for them in such a positive way, and I think it’s increased so much confidence in the people who participate in the show.

DEADLINE: One thing that I find really interesting is kind of a willingness to get involved on your part. For example, Cian, when you mentioned to Connor that he shouldn’t mark people down as a no while they are sitting in front of him at speed dating. Could you talk about having that connection to the cast?

O’CLERY : It’s an interesting thing because when we first made the series, we didn’t plan on us necessarily being involved from behind the camera. It just sort of happened that way, and there’s just the occasional time where you feel like it’s probably a good moment to mention something or let somebody know something and it just felt right at the time. That’s definitely a moment I think people really resonate with in the series. He’s dating for the very first time in his life, and he doesn’t know the rules and he’s not sure how to do things. It just felt like the right thing to do, to mention that at the time and to not let him keep going with it, without maybe having a little hint that it could be affecting his speed dating chances.

HOLDEN : I think that you’ll notice also that Cian would never intervene in the middle of a date or change the dynamic of somebody trying to navigate their relationship. But when there’s a break and someone leaves the table, he’s just checking in with them. It’s like having a wingman with you really. I think that’s the role of the director there, because he’s shooting as well as directing and he’s formed a relationship where these are people who he’s built trust with and he’s spent time with their family and it’s just being able to check in and make sure that they’re reflecting on what’s happening in a positive way, and letting them know that if they need help that they can ask for it. In some ways, it’s an extension of the duty of care that kind of crept its way onto screen, because it also revealed a truth for that person.

DEADLINE: You mentioned having this diverse cast of neurodivergent people, what do you think that’s done to combat this idea of the stereotypical “one type of autistic person” that we usually see represented in media?

O’CLERY : Representation and understanding has really changed a lot in recent years. When we first started making the series, it was still pretty much just  Rain Man  and I think  The Good Doctor  had just started, but there was not much at all. Things have changed a lot, even just since we started making the series, but what better way to raise awareness and understanding that it’s a super diverse condition than having a series with so many people that the audience is getting to know.

Jon Cor is an actor, writer, martial artist/gymnast, hobby musician and – with great relief – no longer a Ford model.

Cor booked his first audition for a major film franchise while courting multiple agencies at the end of the second year of the Theatre Arts and Performance program at Fanshawe College in

London, Ontario. Since then he has gone on to win increasingly key, diverse and demanding roles in projects such as “Freeform’s Shadowhunters: The Mortal Instruments,” Syfy’s “Dark Matter” and numerous independent productions that are near and dear to his heart.

Cor’s ambitions include releasing his first novel, In Heat, which was originally drafted when he was just 19 years old, as well as a collection of short stories, essays, reviews and poetry A Murder of Prose.
