'The Journey: A Music Special from Andrea Bocelli' Doc Official Trailer

by Alex Billington November 29, 2023 Source: YouTube

The Journey: A Music Special from Andrea Bocelli Trailer

"A musical and spiritual journey to rediscover what matters most in life." Goldwyn Films has revealed an official US trailer for a Italian adventure musical called The Journey: A Music Special from Andrea Bocelli . Arriving on VOD this December after first premiering earlier this year. The doc follows the blind, religious Italian singer named Andrea Bocelli as he embarks on a journey following the Via Francigena, an ancient road traveled for centuries by pilgrims - they ride 200 miles on horseback throughout Italy. Merging world-class music with intimate conversations in the awe-inspiring Italian countryside, it is an exploration of the moments that define us, the songs that inspire us, and relationships that connect us to what matters most in life. Featuring Andrea Bocelli, Tori Kelly, Michael W. Smith, Katherine Jenkins, Tauren Wells, and Clara Barbier Serrano. "You'll be swept away by The Journey of beautiful music, creation, faith, and love." This looks like an emotional and passionate performance piece. It very obviously has a strong religious edge to it, not simply another musical. This trailer comes in gorgeous 4K quality as well - as least Italy looks nice.

Movie review: ‘The Journey: A Musical Special from Andrea Bocelli’

In recent years, the Italian tenor Andrea Bocelli has enjoyed international success while frequently offering traditional Christian songs to a mass audience. Blind since the age of 12 and experiencing significant success as a singer while only in his 30s, Bocelli has known hardship in his life, but his art and faith are nonetheless rooted in gratitude. His spiritual life has been heavily influenced by the Russian novelist Leo Tolstoy, and in the 1990s, Bocelli reembraced the Catholic faith of his youth. Following in the long tradition of the people of God offering beautiful music in expressions of joy and sorrow, gratitude and distress, Bocelli’s music is appreciated by many as a gifted and graceful source of hope.

In celebration of his faith, family, friends and homeland, Bocelli recently embarked on a 200-mile pilgrimage — on horseback — along the Via Francigena, from Rome to his provincial Italian estate. The result is the new film “The Journey: A Musical Special from Andrea Bocelli,” directed by Gaetano Morbioli and Paolo Sodi for the Trinity Broadcasting Network, and coming exclusively to theaters from Fathom Events April 2-4 and again on April 6. For established fans of Bocelli and the artists with whom he travels and performs, the film will be a welcome treat for Holy Week.

“The Journey” begins with a delightful, but all-too-brief cameo from Pope Francis, who blesses Bocelli and his fellow travelers as they set out in dramatic fashion on horseback from St. Peter’s Basilica. Chief among Bocelli’s riding companions is his wife, Veronica, who also is one of the film’s executive producers. One scene features the couple’s young daughter, Virginia, whom Bocelli serenades in an empty church with a version of “Ave Maria” that he had written for her a few years earlier. In another scene, Bocelli performs Schubert’s familiar version of the same sacred text in a picturesque landscape.

The film alternates between stunning drone shots of the Italian countryside, conversations on horseback between Bocelli and his friends, and dramatically staged performances in a variety of outdoor and indoor settings along the route. Given the number of contemporary Christian artists who appear with Bocelli in this project, some Catholic viewers may find themselves encountering artists such as Tori Kelly, Michael W. Smith, Tauren Wells and Hillsong United’s Taya Gaukrodgers for the very first time. Classical music fans may enjoy seeing and hearing from the world-famous Welsh crossover singer Katherine Jenkins, Bach specialist Ramin Bahrami, conductor Beatrice Venezi, and the Croatian cellist duo, 2CELLOS, who have become a YouTube sensation.

Along the way, Bocelli reflects on his disability, his career and most of all his family. Toward the end of the film, he meets up with his adult son, Matteo, who reads his father a letter of appreciation while Bocelli strums a Spanish guitar. The film concludes with an outdoor celebration at Bocelli’s home, with spontaneous music, wine and conversation — the epitome of the art of living Italians are famous for.

From a strictly faith-filled perspective, “The Journey” might have been more spiritually enriching had Bocelli and his companions spoken more about the holy sites along the route. Bocelli barely mentions his own devoutness, although it may be clear enough from his encounter with the pope and his choice of Catholic devotional anthems. And while many of the songs from the evangelical performers might not resonate with all Catholics, we can all appreciate the ecumenical spirit of the whole group’s performance of “Amazing Grace” at the end of the film.

Catholics may hope that “The Journey” (thejourney.movie) may stir the hearts of all viewers for Christ, his Church and the Kingdom of Heaven — the last of which feels at times to be very near in the beauty of Bocelli’s native soil.

— Andrew Petiprin

Andrea Bocelli talks pilgrimage, the pope: 'We have a responsibility to make this world more beautiful'

You know  Andrea Bocelli as the world-class tenor with over 90 million albums sold. But did you know he's a gifted horseback rider, too?

Audiences learn many things about the star while watching Bocelli’s new three-part film, “The Journey,” in select theaters April 2-4 and April 6. In the film, Bocelli travels on horseback with family, friends and musicians along Italy’s Via Franciagena, an ancient road, from Rome to his hometown of Lajatico. Throughout the trip, the group performs at various venues along the Italian countryside and hear from locals.

'Always pursue optimism': Bocelli talks album 'Believe,' record-breaking Easter special

Bocelli, who became completely blind at 12, has been riding horses since he was 7.

“The horse was a sort of friend for me, but also a means of transportation. So it’s very familiar to me since I’ve been doing it forever,” Bocelli, 64, said to USA TODAY while promoting the film with his wife in New York City.

Need a break? Play the USA TODAY Daily Crossword Puzzle.

Bocelli, who spoke in Italian, recalled his first horse was purchased by his father Alessandro, at the urging of his grandfather.

“(My grandfather) was ill, and he said, ‘I’d like to give my grandson a horse,’ " Bocelli remembered. “When he died, my father ran to buy me a horse.”

Bocelli’s wife, Veronica Berti Bocelli, wasn’t exactly racing to the idea of making this pilgrimage on horseback.

“It was not easy,” she admitted. “Andrea knows how to speak with (the horses). They can speak to each other in the same language.

“Sometimes my language (with the horses) is a little bit different.”

The couple’s two children, Matteo and Virginia, also join “The Journey” at different junctures. However, neither rode a horse as both are allergic.

A Family Affair: Andrea Bocelli recorded a holiday album, 'A Family Christmas,' with his kids

Other guests who appear with the Bocelli in the film are Grammy winner Tori Kelly and Andrea’s childhood friend, Christiano Quaratessi. At one point, Bocelli’s lifelong friend recalls a story about the two taking Bocelli’s father’s car out for a spin. While Christiano drove, it was Bocelli who attempted to park it and ultimately scratched it.

“I taught Christiano to drive, and a bit to others,” the tenor revealed. “So, there were many episodes where my father’s car took a hit.”|

While Bocelli and his friend joke with each other about their childhood, the two also offer one of the film’s most poignant exchanges: Christiano believes that “music can unite all.” Bocelli quickly responds that he believes God is who unites.

“Every talent is a gift from the heavens, which serves to make the world a more beautiful place,” Bocelli noted. “And if it’s true what Dostoyevsky said once, that ‘Beauty will save the world,’ we artists who are the recipients of these gifts from the heavens, we have a responsibility to make this world more beautiful.”

Bocelli’s “The Journey” leans heavily on his faith; the trip begins with a blessing from Pope Francis. And it’s the tenor’s faith that got him through the COVID-19 lockdown and back on the road. Bocelli will perform for U.S. audiences again with a seven-date trek that kicks off May 9 in Los Angeles and wraps May 21 in Minneapolis.

“It was a wonderful experience which has given me so much joy,” Bocelli said of returning to the road. “During the lockdown we all lived a terrible sadness, unknown to us ever. We need to put this behind us, and I feel I’m at a good place with that effort.”
