With 310 days of sunshine and blue skies, it's no wonder New Mexico's largest city is the perfect backdrop for outdoor enthusiasts. Durango, CO

Day 1: July 13

Albuquerque, NM - Durango, CO

Day 1: destination → durango, co, rise & rally: albuquerque, nm.

What better way to kick off our rally than with the launching of hot air balloons in the famous Balloon Fiesta Park! Prepare for lift off with your fellow MINIacs!

DAY AT A GLANCE

It's time! Hop on I-25 to get out of the city and into the wilderness... Say goodbye to Albuquerque and Santa Fe as we head north toward Highway 84 alongside the many reservation lands that make up New Mexico. Ooh and ahh as we divulge into expansive desert with marvelous red rock formations lining the road. Get ready for surprising and sudden greenery as we cross the border into Colorado and head for Pagosa Springs, known for its hot springs and the abundant trout that jump down the San Juan River. The mountains in the distance will be calling your name as we wind our way to Durango.

SEE YOU IN DURANGO

Climb higher and cross the Colorado border to this sweet town with a Wild West legacy. Nestled in the Animas River Valley, Durango gives the best of both worlds - beautiful green mountains and awe-inspiring red rock formations. Purgatory Resort takes advantage of those steep mountains and 260 inches of snowfall each year-voted as having the best ski weather in America by SKI Magazine more than 10 times! Mountain biking, skiing, and fishing are just a few of the adventures you might find in this quaint town founded by the Denver and Rio Grande Railroad Company.

Grand Junction, CO

Day 2: July 14

Durango, CO - Grand Junction, CO

Day 2: destination → grand junction, co, rise & rally: durango, co.

Meet us back at Fort Lewis College - a public liberal arts school that originated as a military fort! This stunning campus sits at 6,872 feet atop a natural mesa that overlooks the Animas River Valley.

Into the mountains we go! Say goodbye to the desert for a moment as we delve into the San Juan National Forest just north of Durango. On the 550 N, we'll be surrounded by mountains - Purgatory Resort to your left and Animas Mountain to your right. Take in the snow-capped mountains with your windows down as we near Silverton, the start of the world-famous "Million Dollar Highway." We'll give those MINI gears a work out as they climb mountain paths, navigate winding roads and take us to places we've never seen. Savor every moment as you make your way to Ouray, a popular ice climbing destination where the "Million Dollar Highway" comes to an end. If you missed Telluride Ski Resort on your left, don't sweat it. There's plenty more where we're headed! Enjoy the wide-open spaces as we make our way to Delta, where the spanning desert and the 50 W will take us all the way to Grand Junction!

SEE YOU IN GRAND JUNCTION

Looking for some classic Western history on this route? Look no further! Discover dinosaur fossils, historic orchards, Native American artifacts and cowboy memorabilia in one of Colorado's most timeless cities. Mountains, rivers, canyons and lakes continue to mesmerize in Grand Junction - somewhere you can river raft, mountain bike and hike all in the same day. A whopping 76% of the area is made up of public land like Colorado National Monument, also known as the "mini" Grand Canyon-a term we don't take lightly! The Grand Mesa and Rattlesnake Arches show off some of the finest red rock formations Colorado has to offer.

Salt Lake City, UT

Day 3: July 15

Grand Junction, CO - Salt Lake City, UT

Day 3: destination → salt lake city, ut, rise & rally: grand junction, co.

Gather at beautiful Lincoln Park to stroll along the grass and marvel at the more than 60 different types of trees in this gorgeous park complex. Take your furry pals for a quick walk, lay out a picnic blanket or just take a big, deep breath of the fresh air!

Say goodbye to Colorado on I-70 with one last look at the Colorado National Monument! The high desert will take us through red rock formations and tall mountain peaks as we cross over the Utah border! As we pass Cisco, you'll see Arches National Park, home to some of the most iconic rock arches in the U.S. We'll veer off I-70 at Green River and embark on the 191, where you'll be surrounded by unique mesas and natural rock formations. Trade in the wide-open spaces as we make our way into beautiful Price Canyon, opting to take the scenic route along Highway 264 at Colton. "The Energy Loop" winds through the mountains, opening up at shocking locations like Electric Lake and Beaver Dam. The 89 N will help us re-emerge into civilization when we come upon Provo, our first introduction to the Salt Lake Valley. Pass Utah Lake on the lefthand side of I-15 and Mt. Timpanogos on the right. Catch your first look at the Cottonwood Canyons and hike-able Mt. Olympus as you drive north into downtown Salt Lake City.

SEE YOU IN SALT LAKE CITY

Let's drive north to the greatest snow on Earth (don't argue with the locals on that one)! Nine world-class ski resorts surround the Salt Lake area and in the summer they make some of the best biking, hiking and climbing you can find in the West. Take in the beauty of the Cottonwood Canyons from Snowbird Ski Area or one of the many local breweries with a view. Just up Little Emmigration Canyon, you'll find the Utah Olympic Park, one of many venues where the 2002 Winter Olympics were held. The city has a rich pioneer heritage, hosts the wildly popular Sundance Film Festival and boasts an emerging diverse food scene.

EVENING EVENT

Let's close out leg 1 in style! Upon reaching Salt Lake City, drop off your gear or pull right into the Gallivan Center, Salt Lake City's premier outdoor space in the downtown area for an evening of good food, local music and fun.

Build Your Own Adventure

Days 4 & 5: July 16/17

Where Will You Roam?

Days 4 and 5 - do your own thing..

Enjoy a few days to adventure on your own! With the plentiful parks, peaks and panoramas between Salt Lake City and Bozeman, you're sure to make the most of this unscheduled time. Just be sure to meet us in Montana to continue the rally!

Bozeman, MT

Bozeman, MT

Day 5 - bozeman, mt.

Bozeman is a city in southern Montana, in the Rocky Mountains. Downtown, Montana State University's Museum of the Rockies traces the area's history and mounts special exhibitions. It houses the Siebel Dinosaur Complex, with a notable collection of T. rex specimens, and a planetarium. The nearby Bridger Range, to the north, and the Spanish Peaks, to the south, have trails for skiing, biking and hiking.

Missoula, MT

Day 6: July 18

Bozeman, MT - Missoula, MT

Day 6: destination → missoula, mt, rise & rally: bozeman, mt.

Giddy up to Hardscrabble Ranch - a popular wedding venue, retreat destination and today, MTTS's Rise & Rally location! Enjoy the views of the Bridger Mountains and don't forget your cowboy hats.

Greenery awaits! Hop on I-90 as we leave Bozeman and head out through the lush mountains and expansive ranches along the highway. Take a right onto 287 N toward the southern point of Canyon Ferry, a mecca for boaters and fisherman every day of the year. Enjoy the serene, open spaces as we make our way to endearing Helena, the capital of Montana and a former gold rush jewel. On the 12, our MINIs will hug the winding mountainside of the Lewis and Clark National Forest. The beauty continues when we rejoin I-90 to make our final push into Missoula!

SEE YOU IN MISSOULA

A fisherman's paradise! Missoula is known for its blue-ribbon trout fishing, made famous by a little movie called A River Runs Through It. This lush mountain town is often explored by bicycle on the more than 20 miles of bike lanes throughout the city. Don't be shocked when you see surfers catching a wave in the middle of the Clark Fork River on the man-made Brennan's Wave. Locals are partial to their many craft breweries and have grown accustomed to sightings of some of the nearly 13,000 black bears local to the area.

Spokane, WA

Day 7: July 19

Missoula, MT - Spokane, WA

Day 7: destination → spokane, wa, rise & rally: missoula, mt.

Nothing like a gameday in the middle of summer! Join us near Washington-Grizzly Stadium on the University of Montana's campus. Take a peak ;) at the iconic "M" and even hike to the top if you're eager to break a sweat! Go Grizz!

Freeways? Who needs 'em! We're opting for the scenic route once more as we take 93 N through Lolo National Forest and Flathead Reservation. Making our way deep into the forest of pines, you can catch glimpses of McLeod Peak on the right and Ch-Paa-qn Peak to your left. At Ravalli, we'll turn onto 200 to steer around lakes, mountains and rivers in this gorgeous countryside. Enjoy a quick trip through Idaho as we cross the state border to get on Highway 95 to Washington! I-90 will give us our first look at the peaceful Spokane Valley.

SEE YOU IN SPOKANE

Descend upon the Spokane Valley, where you'll find one of the largest urban waterfalls in the country! This city is a gateway to the northwest Rockies, Glacier National Park, the Columbia Valley Wine Region and even the Canadian Rockies. The historic downtown has been well preserved so you can revel in the rich history of this small city. Whether marveling at the many Lilacs grown throughout the town or trying to sneak your way into the world's largest 3-on-3 basketball tournament, Spokane's small-town charm will have you smiling ear-to-ear.

Yakima, WA

Day 8: July 20

Spokane, WA - Yakima, WA

Day 8: destination → yakima, wa, rise & rally: spokane, wa.

Soak up the morning sun in stunning Comstock Park! Get lost among the trees but don't forget to make your way back to your MINI for the homestretch!

Wake up slow with this tranquil drive out of Spokane on U.S. 2. Be sure to finish your coffee before we hit Coulee City and jump on Highway 17! We'll curve along Lake Lenore, whose water is so alkaline that only Lahontan Cutthroat Trout can survive in it. Continue on to Soap Lake and the 283, where you can breathe easy as you take in the spanning greenery and farmland. When the 283 hits I-90, we'll pass over Columbia River until we find Yakima River alongside Highway 811! Wind your way through the gentle canyon until we emerge into the Yakima Valley!

SEE YOU IN YAKIMA

Hops, hops and more hops! It's no surprise Yakima has earned the nickname "Hop Country" as the valley has over 90 wineries and is the oldest grape-growing region in the state. This Washington town has a surprising amount of unique history. Yakima Brewing & Malting Co. was the very first brewpub to open after prohibition and the Yakima Valley Trollies you'll see servicing downtown have been running for more than 100 years! Yakima is the heart of Central Washington and it'll hopefully steal yours along the way.

Seattle, WA

Day 9: July 21

Yakima, WA - Seattle, WA

Day 9: destination → seattle, wa, rise & rally: yakima, wa.

The last drive is finally upon us... but rather than shed a tear, enjoy the beautiful scenes at Fullbright Park - one of many lush parks in the Yakima Valley.

Take off up the 12 for our last drive of MTTS 2024! Our shortest drive yet will certainly become an instant classic. On the 410, we'll divulge into the Cascade Mountain Range, first with a view of Mt. Aix on your lefthand side. Keep a look out for Chinook Pass - a jaw-dropping way to make your way through the crest of the Cascades. On your left, is Mount Rainier, an active volcano and the most glaciated peak in the contiguous country! Worry not - the last volcanic activity was recorded in 1854. Enjoy the peaks as we make our way to Enumclaw, taking the 164 to the outskirts of Tacoma. Then Hop on the 5 and follow the asphalt road to the Emerald City where we will wrap up our incredible adventure together. See you in Seattle!

SEE YOU IN SEATTLE

The Emerald City! Seattle is known to many for its iconic landmarks like the Space Needle, Pike Place Market and the Fremont Troll. Those who have visited will know the city is expansive and diverse - each neighborhood boasts its own culture, its own cuisine and its own sights to see. Seattle proudly supports its sports teams like the Seahawks, Sounders, Mariners and Kraken. This beautiful seaside city is surrounded by national treasures like the Olympic National Park, Mt. Rainier and North Cascades National Park. From tours of the underground ghost town to coffee shop-hopping, Seattle provides an endless to-do list.

Don't cry because it's over, smile because it happened! Fly on over to the Museum of Flight as we celebrate an amazing journey through the Rockies and into the Pacific Northwest.

Mini Takes the States 2024 Kicks Off in Albuquerque on July 13

The week-long enthusiast's event will run through five states, from New Mexico to Washington

mini cooper grand tour

The last Mini Takes the States was in 2022, with 2,000 owners taking part.

When Mini’s last biennial enthusiast road rally kicked off, the group covered some 1,700 miles down the east coast from Vermont to South Carolina. This time around, Mini Takes the States is headed back out west, with Mini USA planning a similarly epic trip from Albuquerque, New Mexico to Yakima, Washington.

Along the way, this Mini Takes the States rally will run through some of the best scenery in the western U.S., kicking off with northwestern New Mexico. From there, Mini owners will head through western Colorado, then over to Salt Lake City and up into Idaho and Montana, before finishing up in central Washington. In total, the Mini Takes the States event spans eight days between July 13 and July 21, 2024.

The 2024 Mini Takes the States rally will make stops along the route in Durango, Colorado; Grand Junction Colorado; Salt Lake City, Utah; Bozeman, Montana and Missoula, Montana, before hitting the end point in Yakima.

Mini will send out registration announcements for this year’s rally later on, but you can stay in the loop by checking out the official MTTS website. That site should update with more details for 2024 soon, and that’s where you’ll be able to register your Mini to take part in the rally.

Richard Hammond Builds Insane Art Piece Based On A Mini Cooper In His Workshop

Richard Hammond has recently shown off his new workshop behind his business, The Smallest Cog , and his show, Richard Hammond’s Workshop . And while the work itself is enough to spark our interest, it’s the extra mojo that The Grand Tour presenter has added to the building’s design that takes us into feature-writing territory.

In a fitting tribute to his love for classic automobiles, he’s taken a quintessentially British car and added its well-known design to what would be a pretty drab area of the workshop. A Mini Cooper , which obviously has been decommissioned, is now acting as rails that are designed to look like a Tamiya car kit, and it was all built by our very own Richard Hammond.

He told fans the idea behind it in a recent video on DriveTribe:

“There’s one part of the workshop I particularly wanted to show off today, and it is I feel the most important the most significant and the cleverest.

“I feel that largely because I made it.”

His balconies are enveloped with beautiful rails formed from recognizable parts of the classic British car. The front bumper sits proudly next to a bonnet, all painted in a light blue-tinted grey. The ex-Top Gear presenter tells us that he arranged all the pieces himself, got them shot blasted by a company on the same industrial estate, and welded it all together with a number of small metal cones before finishing it with powder coating.

Now, it looks like pieces that are ready to snap out to build your very own scale model Mini Cooper, and that’s exactly what the presenter wanted:

“You look at these frames, and you recognize what they’re from,” he told the camera. “If you were here late at night having a few beers, I want you to look at it and get itchy fingers thinking ‘Oh I could snap all those bits out and make it into an actual car.'”

It’s safe to say that Hammond is in his element, and I’m really excited to see what comes next.

2021 Mini John Cooper Works GP review: An almost-grand finale

Mini's third-generation Hardtop sendoff packs more power, better handling and sharper looks. But it's not the pocket rocket we were hoping for.

mini cooper grand tour

Mini would like you to think it's saved the best of its third-generation Hardtop models for last with this 2021 John Cooper Works GP. Limited to just 3,000 units worldwide, the performance-focused GP sends the third-generation Mini Hardtop out in style, with aggressive bodywork, a more powerful engine and a reworked suspension making it the most potent road-going Mini to date. Yet it's not quite going out with a bang.

2021 Mini Hardtop 2 Door John Cooper Works GP FWD

  • Punchy turbo engine
  • Quirky looks
  • Inherent exclusivity

Don't like

  • No manual transmission
  • Squishy Hankook tires
  • Disappointing exhaust note

Flashy but functional

The first thing you can't help but notice about the limited-edition Mini GP are its additional exterior touches. The front apron, lip spoiler and honking double-decker rear wing are exclusive to the GP. They're all functional, too, providing additional downforce over the standard John Cooper Works Hardtop . The carbon-fiber-reinforced plastic wheel arch panels sporting each car's production number are also more than just for aesthetics, covering the wider track and optimizing airflow around the sides.

Combine all that with a Racing Gray Metallic paint job, contrasting Melting Silver Metallic roof and Chili Red accents, and the GP certainly looks like a hi-po Mini should. Sure, the rear wing and side panels may be garish to some, but you can get away with a couple of over-the-top touch visual pieces on a Mini. And remember, it's all functional.

2021 Mini John Cooper Works GP: Small, but mighty

mini cooper grand tour

The hardcore theme continues inside. Like previous Mini GPs , the rear seats are gone, to save weight. There's a red aluminum cross-brace behind the leather- and microfiber-trimmed sport seats. Without the back seats, there's 33.4 cubic feet of cargo space, good for weekly grocery trips -- or a track box, jack and spare tire for trekking out to open track days. Other cabin changes include a numbered dash trim panel, GP-specific digital instrument cluster graphics and a Nappa-leather-wrapped steering wheel with substantial 3D-printed metal shift paddles.

If you're hoping for gobs of infotainment and advanced safety technology, the GP isn't for you. The Mini Connected infotainment system runs on an 8.8-inch touchscreen with navigation with real-time traffic info, a six-speaker audio setup, Bluetooth and Apple CarPlay , but not Android Auto . The center screen isn't the most responsive to inputs, though, often requiring a couple of taps for commands to register.

Power points for charging phones , however, are plentiful for a two-seater, with a USB-A, USB-C, 12-volt outlets and a wireless charging pad on offer. As for safety tech, there's the federally mandated backup camera and that's it.

2021-mini-john-cooper-works-gp-10

The GP's technology hand includes the Mini Connected infotainment system, but not much in advanced safety tech.

A borrowed heart

While the regular JCW Hardtop's 2.0-liter turbocharged I4 pumps out 228 horsepower and 236 pound-feet of torque, the GP gets the 2.0-liter powerplant found in the JCW Clubman and JCW Countryman . This better engine has upgraded pistons, connecting rods, crankshaft and more boost for a total of 301 hp and 331 pound-feet of torque. With the eight-speed automatic transmission, the GP will hit 60 mph in 5 seconds, besting the 5.9-second run of a base JCW Hardtop.

Oh, and you read that right: The GP has an automatic transmission. Unlike its predecessors, the latest GP doesn't route power to its front wheels through a manual transmission, and one isn't available, either. To driving purists -- not to mention the 46% of Mini JCW Hardtop customers who purchase manuals -- the slush box is a colossal letdown, but necessary from a business standpoint. Mini didn't have a manual transmission in its parts bin capable of handling the output of this engine, and the cost in developing and certifying one for a limited-production run wouldn't fly with the bean-counters.

So, for a GP to happen with this engine, it had to be paired with an Aisin-sourced automatic. To Mini's credit, the company did a respectable job giving it sportier shift programming -- something I appreciated while blitzing around GingerMan Raceway in South Haven, Michigan. Activating Sport mode and leaving the transmission in fully automatic mode has the gearbox holding onto gears all the way to redline before ripping off smooth, quick upshifts. These aren't dual-clutch-quick gear-changes, but quite good for a torque-converter automatic. Manual mode features responsive upshifts through the paddles, with just a millisecond delay when downshifting.

2021-mini-john-cooper-works-gp-9

A turbo I4 with 301 horses is good, but it's only available with an automatic transmission.

The engine is strong, delivering consistent pull throughout the rev range with peak torque available between 1,750 and 4,000 rpm. The GP rapidly pulls out of corners and barrels down straights. Cracking 125 mph down GingerMan's back straight is easy, and feels super-fast in this little car. The one complaint I have about the engine is the exhaust note, which has a high-pitch drone at wide-open-throttle. It's not annoying, but simply not ear-pleasing.

Track moves

As always, power is nothing without control and the Mini GP has a pretty darn good handle on dynamics. Additional underbody bracing and a front strut tower bar stiffen the chassis, while the suspension features a 1.4-inch front and 0.9-inch rear wider track, uprated springs, dampers, antiroll bars, increased wheel camber and a 0.4-inch lower ride height. The whole package rides on slick-looking 18-inch forged wheels wrapped with Hankook Ventus S1 Evo Z tires.

All that sounds like a recipe for riot around a track, but the Mini's Hankook tires prove to be a limiting factor. Turn-in is slightly muted and through gradual corners understeer rears its ugly head as the front tires howl attempting to hang on for dear life. For slower, sharp complexes, getting the rear to rotate can be done if you chuck it in hard, which is promising. After three short sessions around GingerMan, the signs of rollover on the front tires are evident, and a looming 150-mile return trip back to metro Detroit means I'm forced to take it easy around the 2.2-mile road course.

2021-mini-john-cooper-works-gp-5

With better tires, the GP will be even better around GingerMan Raceway.

That's a shame, too. The GP's steering is fairly direct and communicative even with these tires. Side-to-side weight transfers are good, stability control tuning is excellent and the brakes stay strong with pedal travel only getting a touch longer at the end of a day of lapping. If fitted with tires with more robust sidewalls, there's little doubt that the GP will shine much brighter around a track and probably excel on an autocross course.

Street survival

Away from the track, this potent Mini is a rough rider. Given the GP's mission in life, I expect that bigger ruts and potholes are going to be felt in the cabin. The brakes are interesting, with very light engagement at the top of the pedal stroke before abruptly clamping down. This makes it difficult to stop smoothly from lower speeds causing me to apologize to a couple of passengers on a few occasions for less-than-smooth stops.

The drivetrain is rather economical given its output, with the EPA estimating that the 2.0T will return 24 miles per gallon in the city and 30 mpg on the highway. In mixed driving, I observed fuel economy in the high 20s, and when cruising on the freeway out to the GingerMan, I easily exceeded the EPA's highway estimates, returning over 35 mpg.

2021-mini-john-cooper-works-gp-25

Ride quality isn't great on road, but fuel efficiency is impressive considering the GP's output.

The best it can be

Is the 2021 Mini John Cooper Works GP truly the best third-generation Hardtop? Yes and no. Yes, if you're looking at it from a numbers standpoint. It's the most powerful production Hardtop to date, hits 60 mph in 5 seconds, and clocked in a sub-8-minute lap time around Germany's Nurburgring Nordschleife, beating the second-generation GP by nearly 30 seconds.

On the other hand, it's missing a manual transmission, which really takes away from the driver-engagement factor. While it is entertaining to drive on track and twisty roads, it isn't what I'd call a blast. It's been more than a decade since the first-gen GP came out, and I still remember driving that car, grinning ear-to-ear, working the manual and feeling like an integral part of the experience. I don't think I'll remember this car half as fondly -- if at all -- 10 years from now.

If you want to put a new GP in your garage, it'll cost you $45,750, including $850 for destination. You won't need to worry about options because there aren't any, but you'll want to run to your Mini dealer right now. Of the 3,000 units, only around 500 have been earmarked for the US, and a Mini spokesperson tells us many have already been spoken for. Personally, I'd probably skip the Mini and scope out a Honda Civic Type R instead, or just troll Craigslist for a clean first-gen GP.

2022 MINI Cooper Overview

Is the mini cooper a good car.

Yes, the Mini Cooper is a good subcompact car . It comes in three body types: the Hardtop 2 Door, Hardtop 4 Door, and Convertible. All three have potent engines, sporty handling, and a high-class cabin. The standard touch screen is easy to use too. However, this vehicle has some weaknesses, including subpar gas mileage estimates and a lack of cargo and passenger space.

Should I Buy the Mini Cooper?

The Mini Cooper is a good choice, especially if you’re seeking a driver’s car that can turn on a dime, but it costs a pretty penny. You could move up to a compact car like the Mazda3 , which is similarly athletic, and still save money. On the other hand, if you like this Mini but want more space, then you might consider the Mini Clubman or Mini Countryman . There’s also an electric version of the Cooper Hardtop called the Mini Electric Hardtop .

How Much is a 2022 MINI Cooper?

The base Mini Cooper Hardtop 2 Door has a starting MSRP of $22,900. That rises to $26,900 for the Mini Cooper S and $32,900 for the John Cooper Works. The four-door and convertible models are pricier, with the convertible JCW starting at $38,900. Whichever way you slice it, the Cooper is one of the most expensive cars in the class.

Mini Cooper Versus the Competition

Mini cooper vs. mini countryman.

The Mini Countryman is essentially an SUV variant of the Cooper. It has similar styling, features, and engines, though unlike the Cooper, the Countryman is available with a plug-in-hybrid powertrain. It also has more passenger and cargo room. However, the Countryman, while still agile, isn’t as fun to drive, and you’ll pay around $6,200 more than the Cooper for its base trim.

Mini Cooper vs. Mini Clubman

The Mini Clubman is a subcompact car that shares many traits with the Cooper, such as equipment, powertrains, and agility. As with the Countryman, the Clubman is roomier than the Cooper, and it’s available with all-wheel drive. However, the Clubman is also pricier, this time by around $7,000.

Mini Hardtop Interior: Small Style

Mini hardtop interior quality.

Like other Mini models, this car has a stylish, distinctive cabin. The Mini Hardtop has high-quality materials and top-notch fit and finish.

Mini Hardtop Infotainment, Bluetooth, and Navigation

Mini borrows much of its infotainment system from BMW. There’s a central knob that controls some settings, as well as a large and user-friendly touch screen. Note that Apple CarPlay is supported, but Android Auto is not.

  • Standard infotainment features: an 8.8-inch touch screen, Bluetooth, a USB port, HD Radio, satellite radio, and a six-speaker sound system
  • Available infotainment features: a 12-speaker Harman Kardon stereo, Apple CarPlay, navigation, and wireless device charging
  • Additional standard features: a digital gauge cluster and a power-folding soft top (convertible)
  • Other available features: proximity keyless entry, dual-zone automatic climate control, and a panoramic moonroof

Mini Hardtop Cargo Space

Cargo space in this Mini varies with body style. The Mini Convertible is the smallest, with a 5.7-cubic-foot trunk that expands to 7.6 cubic feet with the rear seats folded down.

The Mini Hardtop fares better, but its trunk is still undersized for a subcompact car . There’s 8.7 cubic feet of space in the Hardtop 2 Door and 13.1 cubes in the Hardtop 4 Door. Folding down the rear seats expands those to 34 and 40.7 cubic feet, respectively.

How Many People Does the Mini Hardtop Seat?

The Hardtop 2 Door and Convertible each seat four people, and the Hardtop 4 Door seats five. However, fitting two or three people comfortably in the rear seats is no small feat. The four-door model is the best for that, and even then, the rear feels confining on anything more than a short trip. However, the front seats are well-bolstered.

Mini Hardtop and Child Car Seats

There are two complete sets of LATCH connectors for the Mini’s rear outboard seats. The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety evaluated the Hardtop 2 Door’s LATCH system, giving it the second-lowest rating of Marginal for its ease of use. The lower anchors are set deeply in the seats and can be hard to maneuver around.

Mini Hardtop Performance: Pound-for-Pound Contender

Mini hardtop engine.

  • Base engine: turbocharged 1.5-liter three-cylinder with 134 horsepower and 162 pound-feet of torque (Cooper; starts at $22,900)
  • turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder with 189 horsepower and 206 pound-feet of torque (Mini Cooper S; starts at $26,900)
  • turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder with 228 horsepower and 235 pound-feet of torque (John Cooper Works; starts at $32,900)
  • Drivetrain: front-wheel drive
  • Transmission: standard six-speed manual; available seven-speed automatic (Cooper and Cooper S); available eight-speed automatic (JCW)

None of the engines in this vehicle are bad. The four-cylinders are more energetic and aid with faster acceleration, but even the base three-cylinder is well-suited for everyday driving and feels peppy when taking off from a stop.

Mini Hardtop Gas Mileage

Regardless of body type, the base Mini Cooper earns an EPA-estimated 27 mpg in the city and 37 mpg on the highway with the manual transmission and 29 mpg in the city and 38 mpg on the highway with the automatic. Those are underwhelming for the subcompact car class . The Mini Cooper S has similar fuel economy estimates, but the John Cooper Works trails with estimates that dip to 22/31 mpg. Additionally, this vehicle uses premium gasoline, so you’ll pay more at the pump compared to most rivals.

For something more fuel-efficient, check out the all-electric Mini Electric Hardtop .

Mini Hardtop Ride and Handling

Mini models have a reputation for spirited, go-kart-like handling, and the Cooper largely lives up to that. It’s a capable corner-carver, with firm brakes and spry sportiness. The ride can be stiff, though it’s seldom harsh.

Does the Mini Cooper Have All-Wheel Drive?

No. For a Mini model with all-wheel drive, try the Clubman or Countryman .

Cooper Dimensions and Weight

The Cooper is between 12.6 and 13.3 feet long. Its curb weight ranges from 2,711 to 3,143 pounds.

Where Is the 2022 Mini Cooper Built?

Mini builds the 2022 Cooper in the Netherlands and the United Kingdom.

Which Mini Cooper Model Is Right for Me?

Mini cars are known for their flexibility and customization, and the Mini Cooper is no different. For starters, Mini offers this vehicle in three body styles: a two-door hardtop, a four-door hardtop, and a convertible. There are also three variants: the Mini Cooper, Cooper S, and John Cooper Works. Each has a different powertrain. The base model has a 134-horsepower turbocharged engine, while the other two offer more powerful turbocharged four-cylinders.

Notably, the Hardtop 4 Door only comes in Cooper and Cooper S models.

On top of all that, Mini provides three trim levels: Classic, Iconic, and Signature. You can mix and match from there. For instance, you could skip the base model and get a Mini Cooper S Signature, or a John Cooper Works Classic. With so much customization, choosing the right Mini for you is a matter of preference.

There’s also an electric model called the Mini Cooper SE , which we review separately.

Mini Cooper Classic

The entry-level, two-door Mini Hardtop Classic has a starting MSRP of $22,900. Standard features include a digital gauge cluster, an 8.8-inch touch screen, a six-speaker stereo, satellite radio, HD Radio, a USB port, Bluetooth, synthetic leather upholstery, a leather-wrapped steering wheel, rear parking sensors, a rearview camera, lane departure warning, forward collision warning, forward automatic emergency braking, and alloy wheels.

The Mini Cooper S starts at $26,900, and the John Cooper Works has a retail price of $32,900. In every setup, the four-door model costs $1,000 more than the two-door. The convertible Cooper and Mini Cooper S cost $5,000 more than the two-door, and the JCW model costs $6,000 more, starting at $38,900.

There are no major packages with this trim, but heated front seats are available for $500.

Mini Cooper Signature

Retailing for $26,900, the Cooper Hardtop 2 Door Signature adds a moonroof, dual-zone automatic climate control, proximity keyless entry, heated front seats, and larger alloy wheels.

The Mini Cooper S Signature retails for $30,900 for the two-door, $31,900 for the four-door, and $35,900 for the convertible. The JCW Mini Cooper S starts at $35,900 for the two-door and $40,650 for the convertible.

The Premium package costs $1,500 and adds a heated steering wheel and a credit for a Harman Kardon stereo (due to limited availability). The $2,000 Signature Upholstery package includes genuine leather seats. The $1,000 Touchscreen Navigation package comes with a navigation system and Apple CarPlay, and the $1,800 Touchscreen Navigation Plus has that plus wireless device charging. A park assist system can be added for $500.

The Signature is the first trim where you can get a seven-speed automatic transmission instead of the manual.

Mini Cooper Iconic

The Iconic starts at $30,900. It gains leather seats, a heated steering wheel, Apple CarPlay, wireless device charging, a navigation system, a Harman Kardon stereo, and a head-up display. The Signature Upholstery package remains available.

The Final Call

The Mini Cooper is one of the more versatile, fun-to-drive choices in the subcompact car class . It has lively engines, and even the standard three-cylinder is a good choice for daily commutes. Inside, this Mini has a large, easy-to-use touch screen and a handsome, well-built cabin. However, it’s not the best choice for carrying passengers and their stuff, and it costs more than most of its classmates.

Don't just take our word for it. Check out comments from some of the reviews that drive our rankings and analysis.

  • "It puts a smile on your face not just with the way it drives, but also with the way it looks. What’s more, it’s available in multiple ways, in everything from an economical 2-door Hardtop and Convertible to a potent JCW model or an electric SE." -- Kelley Blue Book
  • "The Mini Cooper has an iconic style all its own, and a long list of customizable appearance options that will please individualists. But a Mini can get pricey for such a small car if you pile on the extras, no matter whether you're talking about the standard three-door hatchback, the five-door hatch models, or the costlier convertible." -- Car and Driver (2021)
  • "But, don't lose sight of the fact that Mini models are pricey, particularly for their segment. Yes, they are also upscale for their segment, but add a couple of options and the price really escalates. But, hey, remember the fun-to-drive part." -- Autotrader (2020)

The Grand Tour

The topic of this page has a wiki of its own: The Grand Tour Wiki .

Tgt logo

The Grand Tour is a motoring show on Amazon Prime featuring ex- Top Gear presenters Jeremy Clarkson , Richard Hammond , and James May . The show's executive producer, Andy Wilman , also moved from Top Gear to work on the new show, alongside many other members of the cast and crew including directors Richard Porter, Brian Klein and Phil Churchward.

The Grand Tour was officially announced on the 30th of July, 2015 as "Untitled Car Show", after months of speculation, by the online streaming service Amazon Prime. The Name "The Grand Tour" wasn't announced till May 2016. An official trailer for the series was released fifteen months later, on the 7th of October 2016.

It was revealed that the trio had signed on for thirty-six episodes over three series of the show, although thirty-eight would eventually air during this contract, including two double-part specials. The first episode of the show premiered on the 18th of November, 2016. The show's second series premiered on the 8th of December, 2017. The show's third series premiered on the 18th January 2019. On the 15th of December, 2018, the show was officially renewed for a fourth series which premiered on the 13th of December, 2019 and a fifth and final series that premiered on the 16th of September, 2022.

As part of the show's renewal, it was revealed that the show would no longer film any studio segments, bringing an end to the studio-centric style of show that Clarkson, Hammond, and May had been working on together for seventeen years. The show's fourth season, the first to be produced under this new arrangement, began airing in 2019.

On November 30th, 2023, the series announced of it's finale that aired on the 13th of September, 2024. And then Clarkson, Hammond and May would depart upon it's conclusion The Grand Tour sometime in 2024 and focused of their personal projects and leave automotive TV completely. This statement ruled out a return to Top Gear, after the BBC went off-aired as being 'foresable future'. [1] However, The Grand Tour may continue with newer presenters. [2]

The show's first episode sees the presenters kick off with a festival in the California desert

The show officially began filming its first series on the 7th of October, 2015 when Jeremy Clarkson, James May, and Richard Hammond published pictures from their first shoot in Portugal. The first set of studio segments for the show were filmed in July, 2016 in Johannesburg, South Africa. The show has since filmed in the US, the Netherlands, England, Finland, Germany, Scotland, and the United Arab Emirates.

Announcement [ ]

Amazon announced that they had signed Clarkson, Hammond, and May for 36 episodes of a new show on the 30th of July, 2015. The show was left untitled for many months with promotional videos being released focusing on the presenters' struggle to come up with a name. However, on the 12th of May, 2016, the name was finally revealed to be 'The Grand Tour', reflecting the worldwide nature of the show. More details about the show were also revealed, most notably that the show's format would closely mimic that of Top Gear , featuring studio segments that were to be recorded in a tent that changes locations in almost every episode.

Incidents [ ]

In filming for series 2 , Richard Hammond was involved in two separate accidents. The first occurred in Mozambique, where Hammond was knocked unconscious after falling off a motorcycle. The second more serious incident occurred in Switzerland while filming the series 2 premiere. Hammond crashed a Rimac Concept car while competing in a hill-climb event. The car subsequently caught fire and was completely destroyed. Hammond, meanwhile, was hospitalised with a fractured knee. The accident, coupled with Clarkson's pneumonia diagnosis, delayed the second series premiere from October to December.

In filming for series 4, the crew were forced to evacuate in Vietnam after monsoonal rains flooded the boats of the production crew. In filming for series 5 , May was involved in a deadly crash in Norway in his Mitsubishi Evo.

Segments [ ]

Conversation street [ ].

123093

A still from episode 1's Conversation Street

In this segment, usually around 10 to 20 minutes into the show and lasting 5 to 10 minutes, the presenters often discuss the motoring news/topics and the recent events. The segment is always introduced by Richard Hammond and is accompanied by a 10 second title which features black silhouettes of the presenters against a white background. The title screen varies from episode-to-episode; for example, the title screens have, in the past, featured Clarkson in high-heels, Hammond with a bird on his arm, and the presenters with sombreros.

Celebrity Segments [ ]

For each series a new celebrity segment would be introduced however, they proved to not last long. Series 1 featured Celebrity Brain Crash , which was replaced in series 2 with Celebrity Face Off .

Celebrity Brain Crash (Season 1) [ ]

In this segment, usually around 30 to 40 minutes into the show and lasting from one to five minutes. The presenters introduce a celebrity to arrive into the tent for an interview. The celebrity always begins outside of the tent and mostly were 'killed' before they enter the tent. Guests on Celebrity Brain Crash have included Simon Pegg , Jeremy Renner, Charlize Theron, and Armie Hammer. The segment always ends with James asking, "So, does that mean he/she/they isn't/aren't coming on then?" then Richard implies.

Celebrity Face Off (Season 2) [ ]

In series 2, Celebrity Face Off was introduced. In the segment, two celebrities had their similarities. It is interviewed by Clarkson before competing against each other in a timed lap around a circuit located near the studio tent to determine whosever had their fastest lap. Participants use a Jaguar F-Type to complete their laps. The guests include Dominic Cooper, David Hasselhoff, Hugh Bonneville, Kiefer Sutherland, Paris Hilton, and more. Most said celebrities lapped with the automatic gearbox with other also use the flappy-paddles.

The Eboladrome [ ]

The Grand Tour's test track, which is the venue for most car reviews and the track around which lap times are completed, is nicknamed the Eboladrome , for it's resemblance to the Ebola virus. The track is located in Wroughton, at an used British Royal Air Force base. [1] The track is not used for the show's Celebrity Face Off segment.

The track features prominent landmarks, such as Old Lady's House (which has an unexploded WW-II bomb right next to it), the Isn't Straight , Substation , Your Name Here , and Field of Sheep .

Lap Times [ ]

After reviews have finished, The Grand Tour team put their cars around the Eboladrome, their official test track, to see which can achieve the fastest lap time. In series 1, each lap time was completed by The American, a fictionalised version of retired NASCAR driver Mike Skinner (dubbed as the American ). In series 2, however, Skinner was replaced by British racing driver Abbie Eaton .

Locations [ ]

The following is a list of locations in which The Grand Tour has filmed for Series 1 :

  • Southern California, USA
  • Johannesburg, South Africa
  • Nashville, USA
  • Stuttgart, Germany
  • Rotterdam, Netherlands
  • Lapland, Finland
  • Loch Ness, Scotland
  • Whitby, England
  • Dubai, United Arab Emirates

From Series 2 to Series 3 , only one location was used:

  • The Cotswolds, United Kingdom

Following the conclusion of the third series, the shows will no longer feature a studio in any capacity, instead taking place entirely on filming location.

Format Change (Series 4 - 5) [ ]

From the fourth series until it's final series, the show's well established format was majorly overhauled. The format, of studio segments interlinking pre-produced films, had been a staple of The Grand Tour's first three series and of Clarkson, Hammond, and May's work on the first twenty two seasons of the revived Top Gear .

Thee are the major changes, includes:

Studio Links [ ]

For the duration of Clarkson, Hammond, and May's tenure on the revived Top Gear and The Grand Tour, a studio had been used as a way to link between various pre-produced films. From The Grand Tour's fourth season, this studio link was completely eliminated.

Standalone Segments [ ]

As a consequence of the abolition of the studio links, the trio's regular standalone segments were removed. This included the power laps around both Top Gear's original test track in Dunsfold and The Grand Tour's eboladrome , and the various celebrity-related segments, including Top Gear's Star in a Reasonably Priced Car and The Grand Tour's Celebrity Brain Crash and Celebrity Face Off. Altogether we're dropped.

Special Episodes [ ]

The removal of both the studio links and the standalone segments were a consequence of the larger transition of the show away from smaller films contained within individual episodes towards larger-scale episode-long films, more commonly referred to as specials .

The weekly episode had been officially scraped in-favour of the specials usually by one or two episodes per year, these said specials now aired at random at various times in the said year.

Woodcliff Lake, NJ,   April 30, 2021. MINI USA and the MINI John Cooper Works Team are proud to announce the addition of a new race car into the Touring Car (TC) class for the 2021 SRO TC America series. The #60 MINI, which is visually inspired by the latest generation MINI John Cooper Works GP , will be piloted by team veteran driver Mark Pombo this weekend at Circuit of the Americas in Austin, Texas, and for the remainder of the 2021 season. Replacing Pombo in the #61 MINI in the Touring Car A (TCA) class for the remainder of the season is another team veteran Derek Jones. Jones will ride alongside Clayton Williams driving the #62 MINI.

Visually inspired by the third generation MINI John Cooper Works GP launched in 2020, the #60 MINI is a MINI John Cooper Works Hardtop that has been engineered and modified using both original equipment manufacturer (OEM) and components from across the MINI line up and aftermarket performance parts in order to meet the technical rules and regulations required to compete in the TC class. The GP-inspired visual cues presented on the #60 MINI, including the paint scheme and front grill and fender, help to meet requirements of the series to differentiate the TC versus TCA race cars while on the track.

While the #60 MINI has not turned any laps yet, the team is confident given their six years of success racing with MINI that they will be a contender this weekend and going forward. The MINI JCW Team had similar success running its very first race at Sebring International Raceway in 2015 without having turned a single lap in the race car prior to the qualifying session.

“We cannot wait to get back out on the track at COTA to compete in both TC and TCA,” said Luis Perocarpi, team owner, LAP Motorsports. “We started off the season very strong and look forward to continuing that momentum heading into this weekend.”

The MINI John Cooper Works team is looking to build on the momentum from the start of the season after taking three podiums at Sonoma Raceway in pursuit of the team’s third Manufacturer’s Championship in row in the series. The MINI JCW Team also won Manufacturer’s Championship in 2018 in the final season of the Street Tuner class of the International Motor Sports Association  (IMSA)  Continental Tire SportsCar Challenge Series , where the team finished ahead of BMW, Porsche and Mazda.

Both races will be streamed live at YouTube.com/GTWorld . In addition, MINI John Cooper Works Team owner Luis Perocarpi and driver Mark Pombo will provide live debriefings each session and also provide timing and scoring across the team’s social media channels including Facebook and Instagram.

The MINI JCW Team will have their usual fulltime race crew supported by two service technicians from Momentum MINI in Houston and   MINI of Plano in the Southern Region. These are the same technicians that repair consumer MINIs and have proven time and again that their knowledge transfers to the racing world.

About the MINI JCW Team The MINI JCW Team, operated by LAP Motorsports ( @lapmotorsports ), drives MINI’s most powerful Hardtop ever in the two-door MINI John Cooper Works Hardtop. The team competes in the fiercely competitive SRO TC America Series. For additional information please visit  minijcwteam.com  or email [email protected].
