One of the oldest temple in South India located on the Kadri hills, is believed to have been built in the 10th or the 11th century.

Kadri means plantain as the place is carpeted with plantain trees everywhere it is called as Kadri. It is believed that the place was first inhabited by the Buddhist and later a new religious form called Natha Pantha became more dominant. Lord Shiva was the principal deity worshipped by the followers of Natha Pantha who were called as Jogis and their monasteries were known as Jogi Mutt.

Kadarika was another ancient name associated with the place as depicted by the inscriptions on the pedestal of Lord Lokeshwara’s idol. Legends state that Lord Shiva pleased with Parashurama’s penance appeared as Lord Manjunatha at Kadri along with his consort Goddess Parvati and stayed here for the welfare of the people. Sapthakoti mantras were then transformed as seven holy ponds.

Interesting features of the sacred place is the spring that emerges at the backside of the temple known as Gomukha.
