It is believed that the place was first inhabited by the Buddhist and later a new religious form called Natha Pantha became more dominant. Legends state that Lord Shiva pleased with Parashurama’s penance appeared as Lord Manjunatha at Kadri along with his consort Goddess Parvati and stayed here for the welfare of the people. Sapthakoti mantras were then transformed as seven holy ponds.
