    For anybody reading this (posted a year after original post), the area around the landing bay is reasonably safe to a competant swimmer (in my opinion). I snorkelled alone, but my observations are: a) Ask at the reception in the village on any advice. b) Ask around other guests who might want to team up or have a non-snorkelling friend keep watch.

Kealakekua Bay is a coral lined punchbowl. It gets a lot of visitors but imo the slightly deeper parts where careless fools can't stand or drag their kayaks is still good.
