How Much is My Ride?

Planning your journey or checking out the fare for your trip? Use the Fare Calculator  to find out the fare for your trip, including transfers between buses and the MRT/LRT.

For more information on fares, please refer to Public Transport Council’s website .

Distance Fares

You will get a better deal and greater convenience when you use any of the payment methods except cash for your travel, as travel fares are charged based on the total distance travelled across different travel modes.

This integrated distance fare structure means there are no additional boarding charges when you transfer to different public buses or trains, as long as your journey follows these criteria:

  • The maximum duration between the first and last boarding (not alighting) of a bus or train within a journey is two hours
  • A maximum of five transfers are allowed with no additional boarding charges
  • 45 minutes for transfers between train station and bus service, or between different bus services
  • 15 minutes for transfers between different train stations
  • The current bus service must not be the same number as the preceding bus service
  • No exit and re-entry at the same train station

Fares will be charged by per bus ride if you pay by cash, which will be higher than using electronic payment methods.

Travel Smart by Planning Your Journey

This is the Tavel Smart Logo

Travel Smart Programme

The Travel Smart Programme aims to distribute morning peak hour travel demand on the rail network more evenly and improve commuter experiences in three ways:

This is an image showing the three ways we can travel smart through retiming, changing our mode and reducing peak hour trips

Under the Travel Smart Programme, the first Travel Smart initiative started in 2012 as a trial to incentivise commuters to travel during off-peak hours. In 2014, LTA started to work with organisations on re-timing, re-moding and reducing their journeys. Read on to find out more about the various initiatives under the Travel Smart Programme.

Travel Smart Journeys

In February 2020, Travel Smart Journeys (TSJ) was introduced as a trial on Bus Service 43e to help distribute peak-hour public transport demand by encouraging commuters to adopt alternative modes of travel. The trial benefitted residents in Punggol, Sengkang and Buangkok who were travelling to their workplaces in eastern Singapore.

Since March 2023, TSJ was extended to include five more bus services (City Direct Services 654, 660, 666, 671 and 672). The expansion will benefit more residents, including commuters travelling from Hougang to their workplaces in eastern and central parts of Singapore.

Commuters who travel during the weekday morning peak hours via the North-East Line from Punggol, Sengkang, Buangkok and Hougang stations—or any stations along the Punggol and Sengkang LRT lines—can stand to receive cash rewards by switching to the six bus services to their destinations in MacPherson, Marina Boulevard, Parkway Parade, Paya Lebar, Shenton Way or Tai Seng.

To qualify, commuters must

  • First sign up for an account on the SimplyGo portal  or the SimplyGo app
  • Tap in at least four times within the last 30 days at Punggol, Sengkang, Buangkok, Hougang MRT station, or any station along the Punggol and Sengkang LRT lines from 7am to 9am

150 points, equivalent to $1.50, will be awarded per trip  via the SimplyGo portal, when they switch to any of the 6 bus services – Bus Service 43e, City Direct Services 654, 660, 666, 671 and 672 from 7am to 9am on weekdays. Commuters who use these bus services regularly can potentially offset more than half their bus fares by using the points they earn. The points can be redeemed in 500-point blocks (equivalent to $5.00) into their travel cards.

For the bus routes details, please visit SimplyGo's website .

Past Travel Smart Initiatives

The Travel Smart Programme has been reviewed to take into consideration rail network enhancements and changes to commuter travel patterns.

TransitLink Ticket Offices Selling Singapore Tourist Pass & Operating Hours

lrt tourist pass

I purchased my Singapore Tourist Pass from Orchard MRT Station. The Singapore Tourist Pass came with a guide book on suggested itineraries around Singapore, and information and deals around Singapore. Unfortunately, most deals expired a year ago thanks to COVID-19, and the guide book is outdated now.

lrt tourist pass

All I really needed was just the unlimited rides on basic buses and MRT though.

How To Use Singapore Tourist Pass

lrt tourist pass

The Singapore Tourist Pass activates on first tap on basic bus services, MRT, or LRT, and the countdown for the validity of the pass starts then. This also means that you can purchase the Singapore Tourist Pass in advance (up to 1 year), and tap in on a later date to start the validity then. Just remember to note the refundable rental deposit limit of 5 days from the date of purchase.

( No prizes for guessing why I purchased the Singapore Tourist Pass. )

Just keep tapping as you wish on basic bus services, MRT, and LRT as you wish throughout the validity of your purchased pass.

Here are some illustrations on how this 5 day refund window works:

  • 1 January: Purchase Singapore Tourist Pass
  • 1 January: Start using 3-day Singapore Tourist Pass

Quick Guide to Tokyo One-Day Passes

There are a range of Tokyo one-day passes for train, subway and bus, available to travelers and residents alike. In this guide, we share which of them will cheapen your travels around the city — some won’t!

The first thing to know is that unless you’re going to be zipping all over the city, one-day Tokyo passes might not save you much money. It’s sometimes better to just get a Suica or Pasmo IC card for travel around Tokyo (and the rest of Japan). Before dashing out and buying anything, work out your travel routes and check the ticket prices . When you compare them to the passes below, you might find that single tickets are a better bet.

Overview of Tokyo transport passes

The tokyo metro 24-hour ticket.

A 24 hour Tokyo Metro ticket held up inside a Tokyo Metro Station

We’ve found the Tokyo Metro 24-hour Ticket to be the most useful discount Tokyo travel pass. It costs just ¥ 600 and gives you unlimited rides on all Tokyo Metro lines (Ginza, Marunouchi, Hibiya, Tozai, Chiyoda, Yurakuchō, Hanzōmon, Namboku, and Fukutoshin). There are other lines run by Toei, which you can’t ride for free using this pass, but it’s usually easy enough to work out a journey that only uses Tokyo Metro lines.

A word of caution: Some Tokyo Metro lines continue on private commuter line tracks after a certain point, and you’ll have to pay extra to use them. It’s also worth noting that you can hold advance tickets for up to six months before activating them, but you must activate same-day tickets on the day of purchase.

What to do with it

The Tokyo Metro 24-hour pass covers most of the major bases in Tokyo central. A sample day out on it might look something like this:

  • Start out in Shinjuku — say hi to Godzilla and do a spot of shopping.
  • Then hop onto the Fukutoshin Line from Shinjuku-sanchome Station and head over to Meiji-jingumae to have a mosey around Meiji Jingu Shrine , Yoyogi Park and Harajuku.
  • Wander down to Omotesando for lunch, then board the Ginza Line to experience the glitz and glamour of the  Ginza  neighborhood.
  • After a bit of  ginbura (windowshopping in Ginza), you could get on the train again to see the sights of Asakusa (near Skytree).
  • Ikebukuro , Roppongi (of Tokyo Tower fame), Shibuya and Tokyo Station (near the Imperial Palace) are all also accessible using the pass.

Where to get it

You can grab one from just about any Tokyo Metro ticket machine.

Toei and Tokyo Metro 24-hour Ticket

An array of ticket machines below a network map at Tokyo Metro Akasaka Station

Called different variations of the above in English, but the ichinichi josha ken in Japanese, The Toei and Tokyo Metro 24-hour Ticket allows unlimited rides on all Tokyo Metro and Toei subway lines. It costs ¥ 800 and you can get it online, or at a ticket machine or station office. There are also versions of the pass available for two or three days costing ¥ 1,200 and ¥ 1,500 respectively.

The Toei and Tokyo Metro 24-hour Ticket opens up all of the places that the Tokyo Metro 24-hour Pass does, with the added benefit of access to the Toei Line, which is useful if you plan to visit Oshiage (think Tokyo Skytree), Mita , the booksville that is Jimbocho , Suidobashi or Nerima  (among other areas).

You can also ride on the only streetcar left in Tokyo, the Toden Arakawa Line , which can take you from East Ikebukuro to Zoshigaya (home to Kishimojindo Temple ), Waseda and a few other random destinations. Unless your accommodation is on a Toei Line though, you’ll likely get better value out of a pure Metro pass.

If you’re not going to be using the metro, it’s better to go for the ¥ 700 Toei One-Day Economy Pass ( toei marugoto  kip pu ), which gives you full use of Toei subways, Toei buses, the Toei Streetcar (Toden) Arakawa Line, and the Nippori-Toneri Liner.

The advance ones are sold on Headout and Klook , as well as at Tokyo Metro Commuter Pass Offices, and on-the-day passes can be bought at ticket machines in Metro or Toei Line stations.

Tokunai Pass: 24 hours of JR trains

Commuters at Shinjuku Station

One of the better-value day passes, the Tokunai Pass costs ¥ 760 and gives you unlimited access to local and rapid JR trains within the 23 wards of Tokyo. This cover five lines: The Yamanote, the JR Yokohama Line, the Keihin-Tohoku Line, Chuo-Sobu Lines and the Rapid Chuo (up to a certain point).

While some lines extend to exciting destinations like Yokohama , you have to remain within the 23 wards, but that’s not exactly limiting. To make the most of the Yamanote, you can practically use the trainline as a sightseeing schedule, visiting spots like Shibuya , Shinjuku , Harajuku , Ueno , Akihabara , Ikebukuro , Shinagawa and Tokyo Station .

The other four lines offer spots like Ryogoku (home of sumo ) and Koenji (home of hipsters ), along with plenty of smaller local-feeling stations.

Pick one up at the reserved-seat ticket machines at stations, JR ticket offices ( midori-no-madoguchi in Japanese) or JR’s travel service centers.

Tokyo Free Kippu 24-hour Ticket

commuters at Shinjuku train station in Tokyo

Also known as the Tokyo Combination Ticket or Tokyo Tour Ticket, this is almost NEVER the best deal. The one-day pass costs ¥ 1,600 and gives you access to the Tokyo Metro, Toei Subway, Toei Streetcar (Toden), most Toei buses, the Nippori-Toneri Liner, and all JR lines within the Tokyo metropolitan area. Seems great at first glance, but it’s unlikely that you’ll be doing that much traveling in a single day. Our advice? Opt for one of the other Tokyo travel passes.

With this pass, you can go pretty much anywhere and everywhere in Tokyo, but you’d have to be doing exactly that to get the best deal. Keep it in mind if you have to do multiple transfers between lines and services though — or if the reduced hassle of ticket buying is worth it for you (travel expenses, anyone?)

Buy the pass from machines at almost all Tokyo Metro Stations (except Kita-senju, Naka-meguro, Nakano, Yoyogi-Uehara, Wakoshi, Meguro and Shibuya’s Hanzomon and Fukutoshin Lines).

Toei Bus One-day Pass

A Toei Bus pulls over during the Sanja Matsuri in Asakusa

For ¥ 500 , you can get a Toei Bus One-Day Pass — which is great if you’re planning on taking the bus up and down Tokyo, but not all that useful otherwise. Considering that a single trip on the bus usually costs ¥ 210 , and a return ¥ 420 , you need to be making more than one round-trip for this pass to be worthwhile.

Most tourists tend to rely on trains more than buses, as they’re easier to navigate. That said, Google Maps is getting better for this, so branch out if you fancy seeing some sights on your journey from A to B.

Cool things about the Toei Bus One-day Pass: You can use it for unlimited travel within Tokyo’s 23 wards (you can get off at every stop if you feel like it). And it has a great slogan: “Feel the life of Japanese on the bus!” Who could say no to that?

The Tokyo bus system is extensive, so you can use the pass to go anywhere in Tokyo. It may not be quicker, but it’s a bit better for getting yourself oriented in the city.

The ticket can be purchased on the bus or at Toei bus commuter pass offices (probably easier to stick to the bus though). You can get a paper option or have it added to your Pasmo card. Try to be early for the first bus, so as not to hold up the queue.

Seibu One-day Pass

Kawagoe traditiona buildings

A pass that promises the joy of the four seasons, the Seibu Pass is great if you’re planning on visiting the old-town world of Kawagoe or the day-trip destination of Chichibu. Both are great options for a day outdoors, with Hon-Kawagoe an hour from Seibu-Shinjuku Station and Chichibu an hour from Ikebukuro.

While there are limited-express train options for both these routes, they’re not covered under this pass, which is a little frustrating. You’ll still save on a return ticket though. The Seibu Pass has both one and two-day options: the one-day pass is ¥ 1,000 , while the 2-day pass is (predictably) ¥ 2,000 . The pass includes all lines, except for the Tamagawa Line. There’s also an option for a Nagatoro addition, if you’d like to cavort close to a river at any point.

Head out to Kawagoe for a day filled with temple-hopping and old-school sweets, or go to Chichibu for a temple pilgrimage or the spring shiba-zakura festival . If you’re looking for more Tokyo day trips, check out our top options .

The Seibu One-day Pass can be purchased at Seibu Limited Express ticket offices on the first and basement floors of Ikebukuro Station, the Seibu Tourist Information Center in Ikebukuro or in Seibu-Shinjuku Station. The one-day ticket can also be purchased in advance online through Klook .

Bonus Tokyo travel passes

Gotokuji Lucky Cat

While the discount tickets above are great for days of sightseeing, there are plenty of others for more specific needs, like airport travel or local lines.

Airport combination tickets

  • Haneda Airport: A ¥ 1,400 pass that gets you from Haneda Airport into the city on the Keikyu Line and throws in a Toei and Tokyo Metro One-day Economy Pass too. You can buy it on arrival at Haneda. Read more about the “Hanetoku Pass” .
  • Narita Airport: The Keisei Skyliner and Tokyo Subway 24-hour ticket for those coming in from Narita, for ¥ 2,890 . If you don’t book online, you can also buy it at the airport after arrival.

While you’re at it, you might want to explore other cheap ways to get from Haneda Airport to Tokyo and Narita Airport to Tokyo .

Local line tickets

Local line tickets are great if you’re staying in a particular area or have a few stops to make in a day. Some of the best options include:

  • The Rinkai Line 1-Day Ticket is perfect if you’re using the Seikyu Line to explore Odaiba.
  • The Yurikamome One-Day Pass is great for those skipping between Shimbashi, Toyosu and Odaiba.
  • The Setagaya Line Explorer Ticket gets you to the famed cat temple in Gotokuji on a very cute cat tram.
  • The Tokyu Line Minatomirai Ticket gives you a return ticket from Tokyo and unlimited use on the Minatomirai subway line which is a great deal. Prices differ depending on the starting station.

Look for these and other discount passes when buying tickets at station vending machines.

Extended tickets

There are also longer-use passes, like the three-day Tokyo Wide Pass , the various Japan Rail Passes , and the seasonal Seishun 18 ticket . These are recommended for travel outside of Tokyo.

And if you want to get outside for the day, here’s a map of the Tokyo subway by walking times — no pass required, just a sturdy pair of shoes.

Senate Passes Senators Wiener & Wahab’s Connect Bay Area Act To Authorize Transit Funding on the 2026 Ballot, Study Consolidation, and Improve Regional Integration

SACRAMENTO – The Senate passed Senator Scott Wiener’s (D-San Francisco) and Aisha Wahab’s (D-Silicon Valley) Senate Bill 1031, the Connect Bay Area Act. SB 1031 authorizes a Bay Area ballot measure to provide transportation funding on the 2026 ballot or later, and require operational reforms and a consolidation assessment beginning next year. The bill passed 26-10 and heads next to the Assembly, where it must pass by August 31.

“Public transportation is a critical part of the Bay Area’s future, and we must ensure our transit systems are reliable, safe, and clean and that riders have a seamless experience while getting around the region,”  said Senator Wiener. “SB 1031 will allow the Bay Area to chart a strong future for transportation by funding and modernizing our transit systems as well as improving our roads and highways. I look forward to continuing regional dialogue on this important endeavor.”

“SB 1031 has the potential to deliver a world-class transit system by authorizing a revenue measure and evaluating short and long-term benefits of consolidation and enhanced coordination,” said  Senator Wahab. “We have the ability to transform Bay Area public transit, and we cannot afford to squander this opportunity.”

Bay Area public transportation has long struggled with unstable operational funding. Since the pandemic, public transportation ridership levels across the U.S. have grown steadily but failed to reach pre-pandemic levels. The result is that across the Bay Area region, public transportation operators are expected to experience budget shortfalls totaling at least $600 million each year, enough to trigger massive service cuts that would seriously disrupt the region’s economy, convenience, and climate goals. Federal and state aid, including  $1.1 billion from last year’s state budget ($400 million of which went to the Bay Area) — which was secured in a campaign led by Senator Wiener and supported by Senator Wahab — delayed these service cuts by over a year and a half, and they are now expected to begin in mid 2026. SB 1031 will allow the Bay Area to prevent these service cuts while funding a range of improvements for all forms of transportation.

SB 1031 does not specify the source of the revenue, but empowers MTC to choose among a sales tax, regional payroll tax, square footage-based parcel tax, and regional vehicle registration charge, or a combination thereof. As of October 2023, almost two-thirds of Bay Area voters agree that there is a need for more funding to address transportation in the Bay Area and 78% believe that public transit is very important for the Bay Area.

A Balanced Expenditure Plan

The authors agreed to amend the bill to set a goal of raising $1.5 billion in revenue. Seventy percent of the funds must be returned to benefit the counties that paid the revenue in the first 5 years, after which 90% of funds must be returned. Any new taxes would expire after no more than 30 years, and if a sales tax is proposed it will be no more than half a cent.

The Act requires the Commission to distribute revenues such that no less than 45% of investments support transit transformation, no less than 25% are invested in local roadway rehabilitation or complete streets investments (safe streets), no less than 15% are invested in connectivity (transit and roadway capital) improvements, and up to 15% of investments are used to close operating gaps, improve ridership, or ensure return to source minimums for counties. The expenditure plan also ensures a minimum funding allocation per operator. Specifically, the following minimum allocations apply:

  • At least $25 million per year for operators serving over 5 million riders per year and/or carrying passengers more than 25 million miles per year
  • At least $10 million per year for public transit operators in counties where those operators provide a combined minimum of 3 million trips and maximum of 5 million trips per year.
  • At least $5 million per year for small public transit operators in counties where those operators provide fewer than 3 million trips per year

Improving & Maintaining All Kinds of Transportation

SB 1031 provides vital funds to pay for public transportation operations to maintain and improve service levels across the nine Bay Area counties. The bill also authorizes additional expenditures from a ballot measure to be used to fund:

  • Zero emission transit vehicles and related infrastructure.
  • Safe streets, including pothole repairs, bicycle and pedestrian access improvements, and safe routes to transit and schools.
  • Capital improvements to support connectivity, including roadway, active transportation, and transit capital improvement projects that support connectivity and mobility in a climate neutral manner.
  • Climate resiliency projects to protect transportation infrastructure.

Improving Integration Across The Region: Network Management

Also beginning in 2025, SB 1031 designates MTC with the responsibility to adopt network management policies that result in the implementation of a seamless transit rider experience across the nine-county Bay Area region with the goal of increasing transit ridership. This includes the following areas:

  • Fares – fare payment and integration
  • Mapping and wayfinding
  • Real-time transit information
  • Other customer-facing policies

SB 1031 enhances MTC’s authority to condition the receipt of State Transit Assistance (STA) Funds on transit agencies’ compliance with regional transit coordination policies, and to direct the conditioning of future regional transportation revenue measure funds. The authors agreed that no other existing funding sources will be conditioned on the network management provisions.

Assessing Further Consolidation

In 2025, before the funding measure goes to the ballot, SB 1031 requires CalSTA to select a transportation institute to assess the twenty-seven agencies across the nine Bay Area counties for consolidation, and center the needs of riders through the lens of:

  • Improving the speed, efficiency, and reliability of service.
  • Improving the affordability of fares.
  • Improving the safety and cleanliness of service.
  • Promoting the achievement of the state’s climate goals, including through the incorporation and diffusion of zero-emission technologies.
  • Incorporating other technological changes that improve rider experience and safety.
  • Improving accessibility of, and connections to, regional and interregional transit service.
  • Improving and simplifying the accountability of the transportation systems to the public and riders.
  • Reducing administrative costs and improving cost efficiencies within and across transit agencies.

SB 1031 establishes the Bay Area Transit Technical Assistance Fund and permits revenues generated from a regional transportation revenue measure to be deposited into the fund for purposes of paying for the consolidation assessment required by SB 1031 and future consolidation implementation activities that may occur but are not required by SB 1031.

Encouraging Mode Shift To Public Transportation

Subject to voter approval, SB 1031 would expand transportation benefits for Bay Area employees by authorizing MTC and the Bay Area Air Quality Management District (BAAQMD) to require employers with 50 or more employees to provide a subsidy to incentivize non-solo driving. For employers that are located in proximity to transit, the employer would be required to purchase a universal, unlimited transit pass for each of their employees.

SB 1031 is sponsored by the Metropolitan Transportation Commission.

The COVID-19 pandemic took a massive toll on public transit, as commuter buses and trains were nearly empty during the early months of the pandemic. Passenger fares and other transit agency revenue dropped by 30% between 2020 and 2021. The federal government intervened, spending more than $69 billion in relief funds – five times the amount spent on public transportation in 2019, according to the Congressional Research Service.

This action saved thousands of jobs in an industry that employees more than 430,000 workers, according to American Public Transportation Association.

Although a majority of Americans are in support of public transportation and passenger rail, the share of people who use public transit everyday to commute to work is miniscule: 3.1%, to be exact.

Part of the reason that percentage is so small is because close to half of all Americans have no access to public transportation.

Here's a breakdown of public transit ridership and how Americans utilize transit:

How do people get to work?

The most recent year of commuter data shows that 3.1% of Americans used public transportation to travel to work. A majority of Americans drive alone to work. That percentage has been relatively consistent for the past decade up until 2020 when the pandemic shifted many jobs online.

According to the American Community Survey, in 2019, 75.9% of workers drove alone to work, compared to about 67.8% in 2021.

Although the rate increased slightly in 2022, it is significantly less than the share of Americans driving alone to work prior to the pandemic.

Carpooling was the second most common method of commuting to work between 2010 and 2019.

Between 2019 and 2021, the rate dropped from 8.9% to 7.8% in 2021.

Working from home was relatively uncommon until 2020. By 2022, it was the second most common response to the ACS commuting survey, behind driving alone.

Public transit ridership declined after the pandemic

About 70% of public transit commuters in the U.S. live in one of the following metro areas:

  • Los Angeles
  • Philadelphia
  • San Francisco
  • Washington, D.C.

Public transit ridership took a sharp decline after the COVID-19 pandemic and has yet to bounce back to pre-pandemic numbers.

The New York metro area has the most public transit commuters of any other U.S. metro area. Between 2019 and 2022, commuter ridership dropped by 700,000. A similar trend affected the Washington, D.C. metro area.

The number of transit commuters in 2022 was less than half of total commuters in 2019, according to the American Community Survey.

What occupations are popular among public transit riders?

Of the small portion of daily commuters who used public transit, a quarter were employed in education, health care or social service industries.

About 13% of public transit commuters worked in arts, entertainment, and food services.

Those working in armed forces had the smallest share of public transit commuters, with less than 1% representation.
