Rakim Mayers was born on the 3rd of October 1988 in New York, USA. He started rapping when he was eight years old and after years of intense personal hardship became A$AP Rocky, one of the true renaissance men of modern Hip-Hop.

I’m going to assume that most musicians would kill for the career that Rocky has had. At a mere 26 years of age he’s already one of the hottest rappers in the world, a prolific producer, an experienced director, head of his own record label (ASAP Worldwide) and not to mention his own clothing line.

The term “he has the world at his feet” was seemingly coined for him and his collective, the A$AP Mob, and fewer artists have earned the right to success quite like he has. Every rapper needs to have a “rags to riches” story to be taken seriously these days and Rocky’s is a doozy.

Born in Harlem, New York City, Hip Hop was a part of Rocky’s DNA from the start; he was named after Rakim from East Coast legends Eric B. and Rakim, after all. However, when he was twelve his father was sent to jail on drugs charges, a year later his older brother, who taught him how to rap, was murdered.

This led to a long period of homelessness, where he and his mother would move from shelter to shelter and by 15, Rocky was selling Crack Cocaine to get by. One he and his mother moved to New Jersey, he joined the nascent A$AP Mob, and the rest, they say, is history.

Working with the Mob gave him all the exposure he needed to achieve the astonishing feats he’s reached in his seven year music career. The most exciting part is that’s it’s still beginning, and the best has very much yet to come with this once in a generation talent.

Live reviews

A$AP Rocky was perched at the top of a three-story church pleading with the “Holy Ghost” as his millennial choir echoed his prayers back at him. The 26-year-old rapper from Harlem, New York might claim to have his own relationship with God, but it’s no secret that he also maintains his own cult. Those faithful followers were more than happy to “turn the fuck up” in order to provide Rocky with the energy he needed to get through his performance last night. He spoke about some mysterious “battle” when he performed at the Ogden Theater a few years ago, but he was fighting something different this time around; he was fighting the flu. Although it’s not uncommon to see someone puke at Red Rocks, usually that someone isn’t the headliner. Rocky is a fighter though. So when the sickness crept up on him, he just spit that shit out and continued on with his set. In fact, although it was a slightly abbreviated set, it was far superior to what I witnessed at the Ogden last time around. Flu symptoms aside, Rocky and the present members of his A$AP Mob have found their stage legs in the past few years. It might seem ridiculous to call A$AP Rocky a professional (he is the same guy who started brawling with the crowd at SXSW in 2012), but I think anyone who comes out and not only does their job, but does it in style (while deathly ill), is deserving of the denotation. I am getting ahead of myself here though, because before Rocky, there was Vince, Danny and Tyler… - See more at: http://ilistensoyoudonthaveto.com/2015/10/02/rocky-and-tyler-tour-red-rocks-09-30-15/#sthash.zNL1Rrye.dpuf

Rakim Mayers, better known by is stage name of A$AP Rocky, is an American rapper and Hip Hop artist. A$AP Rocky, before he became the hip hop legend, suffered years of hardship whilst young and living in Harlem, New York. He reinvented himself and was rewarded for his hard work with a blooming career as a hip hop artist. A$AP Rocky is one member of the A$AP collective, a whole team of rappers and hip hop artists. Joining the A$AP mob launched Rocky’s career and gave him his chance to start over and reach for the stars. Rocky’ struggles are evident in his voice when he raps, and by what he raps about. His music is incredibly raw and real, with deep emotion and pain. He is a breath of fresh air away from the normal rapper who mindlessly raps about ‘bitches’ and ‘hoes’. The atmosphere at an A$AP gig is pure madness: everyone from ghetto to suburban kids turned up and people were going mental for the music. It was fun and exciting, the crowd dancing so hard that it had the air of a flash mob about it. Rocky took the mic for ‘Peso’ and the crowd went wild, crowd surfing him as he rapped. It was a fantastic night all round.

I went to see both A$AP Rocky and Wiz Khalifa at the Genting arena during their European tour. Me and a friend got there early enough to be stood two or three people from the front. The supporting acts were decent, Chevy Woods failed to get the crowd going as much as Wiz Khalifa did, however they succeeded in the purpose of getting the audience hyped. Wiz had the longer set and despite having a reputation for being one of the world's biggest stoners, he was lively and really succeeded in getting the crowd going. He sprayed champagne on me and my friend.

I did not primarily come for Wiz however, I was more curious to see what A$AP had in store. He had the shorter set, which took a little while to get going as he stood behind some sort of curtain for a good ten minutes. However, when the show got into full swing Rocky and the Mob got the crowd jumping and at one point, moshing. I feel that A$AP could have maybe played a few more tracks as some of my favourites were missed. But overall, I would recommend anyone go and see them, as I had an amazing time!

Rakim Mayers, otherwise known as ASAP Rocky became one of the most exciting new artists in US hip hop in 2013 when his debut album 'Long. Live. ASAP' topped the billboard chart and made waves all over Europe. A confident, high level of rap and hip hop earned the album critical acclaim and his status increased dramatically.

Now the rapper has a crew and live show to support the credentials. From the opening beats of 'Long Live ASAP' the crowd are treated to a demonstration of world-class new hip hop. The setlist blends so well due to the frontman's ability to freestyle yet when he does break to appreciate the adoration, the response is huge from the audience. Big tracks such as 'Wild For The Night' receive massive cheers as the group perform this massive hip hop track with intensity.

Most of the time, the frontman ends up crowd surfing following a huge performance of finale 'Fuckin' Problems' and this was no different as ASAP launches himself as the audience enthusiastically carry him around the venue whilst continuing to dance along.

This show was so live! I am very satisfied with my purchase. Vince Staples opened & he killed it. I even more of a fan now, he is really one on the come up. Danny Brown performed next and OMFG he lit the crowd up. Mosh pits went off which doesn't bother me but I wish the people who choose to announce that whoever doesn't want to be by it get out of the way.. But it was lit. Rocky came out and performed JD which was dope as the first song he preformed. He played his new shit, some old. nearly all of the ASAP mob was there they preformed hella hoes which got everyone hypppeeeee af

Flacko and Danny did 1 train which was a dream come true. They even played nirvana

Everything about this show was such an amazing experience, great crowd too. Love these three together so happy they're on tour together

The doors supposedly were supposed to open at 6:30. The show was listed as 8pm. The doors were not open until 9:15, while it was 10° outside. NOT COOL. I seriously couldnt feel my toes, fingers, my body was trembling through the first song! I arrived at 8 expecting the doors to be open, and tag in the back of the line. I was towards the front and still waited for an hour and a half to get in. Once inside tho I was amazed by the venue, (it was my first time to the armory) and rocky was just as beautiful as expected. Seriously cold tho, like might think twice the next time a show is at this venue.

The concert was amazing when it started! The stage set ups and changes were all very exciting! But the delay of the concert and waiting in the freezing cold for 3 hours was not the greatest part, when I did dress in layers. The cold got unbearable I almost had to leave. I had to leave early and only saw 15 minutes of A$AP because the last train left st 12:45. Since it was so delayed and was more delayed in between acts I did not get to see much of my favorite artist. He is an inspiration and icon to me and I wish I could of stayed. Other then the delay and cold it was amazing while it lasted!

Terminal 5 really screwed over the fans and most of us waiting about 3 hours in the freezing cold (below freezing temperature and wind) to get into the venue. So unfortunately that happened. Once there, the vibe was popping and there was such good energy all around. A$AP was a bit too amped, shall we say, to give his full set so he only ended up doing a couple songs with the Mob supporting. We only saw 1.5 hours of music which was disappointing but what I did get to see was awesome.

A$AP Rocky is one of the best performers I have seen!! He puts on an astounding show and you are able to see how much time and effort went into it. Every piece during the show was put together well and incorporated the theme in every aspect onstage. I also loved the fact he played his favorite songs by other artists and even BROUGHT THEM OUT, such as Tyga and Drake. A$AP Rocky's concert was a great experience and I highly recommend going to one if he comes to a city near you.

Unfortunately our A$AP experience was poor because of Terminal 5 and other factors. We had to wait over 1 hour and a half in 6 degree weather due to reasons that were never explained to us. A$AP and his boys only come on for 20 minutes - midnight curfew. Those 20 minutes were dope and rowdy, but what a shame.

LONG.LIVE.A$AP Turns 10

long live asap tour

What ever happened to the middlebrow rap blockbuster? When A$AP Rocky released his official debut album 10 years ago this Sunday, that pretty motherfucker was part of a constellation of crossover stars making grandly colorful statement LPs that churned out hits, tantalized critics, and suggested the “blog era” could be adapted to cinematic scale. Every album is a time capsule, but listening back to LONG.LIVE.A$AP , I’m especially struck by how rarely albums like this emerge in the present.

The early 2010s were a huge moment for self-consciously artful epics like My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy , Take Care , and good kid, m.A.A.d. city . With rare exceptions like Tyler, The Creator, that lane is closed now, partially because the men at the center of those albums have moved on: Kanye West to oblivion, Drake to the assembly line, Kendrick Lamar somewhere farther from the zeitgeist than ever. Back then, they were all present in Rocky’s music — Club Paradise tourmates Drake and Kendrick literally as guest MCs, Kanye spiritually through the influence of his omnivorous genre-melding taste and his fascinations with art, fashion, and the attendant halls of power. There were also traces of Three 6 Mafia’s Southern horrorcore and DJ Screw’s molasses-paced rider music and Bone Thugs’ elastic sing-song — everything but the New York hip-hop you’d expect from a guy from Dipset’s neighborhood whose parents named him after Rakim.

In 2013, it all came together on a record that affirmed Rocky as both a rapper and a potential pop star. He looked the part: extraordinary swag and a mouth full of gold, flanked by his entourage amidst a cloud of purple smoke. He sounded it, too, with slippery, nimble delivery, evocative descriptions of his own splendor, and an unmistakable presence adaptable enough to thrive in any environment. Rocky had a reputation for style over substance, for neatly assembling his influences into a mood board and calling it art. But if it lacked a certain depth, LONG.LIVE.A$AP fit pretty well into that continuum of big-swing brand-name hip-hop records and was gobbled up by the same people (e.g. me) who were going nuts for Kanye, Drake, and Kendrick. The record still stands as a vast and ambitious collection of sounds, one that massaged major-label rap’s time-tested something-for-everyone approach enough to make it feel less like pandering than savvy curation.

Nowadays, LONG.LIVE.A$AP feels like a classic but not a masterpiece — less a timeless work of art than a document of a brilliant shit-talker and stylist at the peak of his powers. Maybe you prefer LIVELOVEA$AP , the 2011 mixtape on which the Harlem MC and his associates blended sounds from across the map into a compelling aesthetic statement, or At.Long.Last.A$AP , the acid-drenched 2015 opus on which Rocky ventured further out into the experimental wilderness. (No one prefers Testing .) But for me, this is the best Rocky full-length, the one that hits like popcorn entertainment without compromising A$AP Mob’s high-fashion-meets-street-life posture.

Never does it entertain more than on a three-song stretch at its core that includes some of the album’s most memorable guest spots. If there’s one track that makes LONG.LIVE.A$AP feel a million years old, it’s “Fuckin’ Problems,” Rocky’s only top-10 hit as a lead artist and a relic of a time when Drake and Kendrick Lamar could still appear on the same song — in the same music video, even! The track is sleek, streamlined fun: a ridiculous 2 Chainz hook about sex addiction plus Rocky, Drake, and Kendrick having a blast one-upping each other over 40’s four-chord vamp. (“Just drop down and get your eagle on/ Or we can stare up at the stars and put the Beatles on” wins the game for me.) On the subsequent “Wild For The Night,” Rocky rides Skrillex’s Caribbean brostep bounce so skillfully that what could have been an awkward pairing feels inspired; it might be the best ignorant party music either guy ever made. Then there’s “1 Train,” a fleeting glimpse of NYC rap classicism, on which a procession of blog-rap royals assembles over Hit-Boy’s best string-laden boom-bap. On second thought, nothing dates this album quite like a posse cut involving Rocky, Kendrick, Joey Bada$$, Action Bronson, Danny Brown, Big K.R.I.T., and Yelawolf.

That middle stretch is an incomparable peak for LONG.LIVE.A$AP , rivaled only by its opening triad. Within the title track’s booming bass dungeon, Rocky busts out what seems like a Radiohead impression, shifting into a fluttering falsetto over spindly “Scatterbrain” guitar arpeggios on the chorus. Lead single “Goldie” is impossibly smooth and magnificently hard, Rocky gliding over Hit-Boy’s thundering 808 burbles and whistling hook. (Have we considered the possibility that this album was Hit-Boy’s finest hour?) On the refrain, Rocky toggled over to the screwed vocals that he’d helped to turn from a regional specialty into an omnipresent trend, reaching all the way to Miley Cyrus and Vampire Weekend. Whether in his standard timbre or pitched down, it’s some of the most agile rapping of his career. He immediately returns to the purple murk on “PMW,” on which he and ScHoolboy Q identify pussy, money, and weed as life’s essentials.

Sequences like these played like genius extensions of the vibe Rocky conjured on his breakthrough tape, as if he was expanding his native environment, not replacing it. Even radio bait like the icy, synthetic, kinda goofy “Fashion Killa” was seamlessly incorporated into the whole. And when he returned to his bleary comfort zone on tracks like “LVL” and “Hell” — both produced by cloud-rap auteur Clams Casino, who’d helped to shape Rocky’s sound back when the late A$AP Yams was still gassing him up on Tumblr — he continued to sound entirely at home. Sure, the album trailed off a bit at the end, but by that point Rocky had already more than proven himself as a star.

On his next couple albums, Rocky admirably tried to keep pushing his sound to new places, but sometime after informing us that Trap Lord is in stores now, he lost the plot. It’s possible that the late promotional genius A$AP Yams had been more of a rudder than anyone had realized. By 2019, when Rocky was detained in Sweden in what became a geopolitical standoff, he seemed past his creative prime. Still, you can clearly see his influence in artists like Playboi Carti and Westside Gunn, who’ve taken his blend of fashion, art, and grimy street rap to fascinating new places. As for Rocky, he remains a festival headliner even though for years his music has been overshadowed by his personal life, for better and worse. Last year he and Rihanna welcomed a baby boy; recently he was scheduled to be in a Los Angeles courtroom on charges of shooting his former associate A$AP Relli in November 2021.

As for the fate of albums like LONG.LIVE.A$AP , which of rap’s crossover stars was going to make them? Future, who kept one foot in the street-rap ecosystem even when dabbling with pop, opted for villainous consistency over manufactured prestige. Migos and Rae Sremmurd were singles acts, no matter how many tracks they crammed on a record. J. Cole kept trying too hard. Chance The Rapper dropped the baton. Cardi B hasn’t even bothered to release another LP, and Megan Thee Stallion arguably doesn’t need to. Travis Scott, whose Astroworld was one of the last smash-hit epics of this ilk, saw his career severely damaged by presiding over one of the most tragically deadly music festival accidents in recent memory, while Young Thug was sidelined by racketeering charges at the peak of his influence. A whole generation of game-changing talents died young, and most of them were operating on an entirely different wavelength before they passed.

Once Juice WRLD and Lil Peep and XXXTentacion were gone, a page had already turned. Streaming services destroyed the blogs that fomented Rocky’s wave of peers, and even the most successful among them never ascended beyond afternoon festival sets and a dedicated core of listeners. Rap splintered into regional scenes and underground cults of personality, scattered across countless SoundCloud and YouTube accounts. Reflecting a TikTok reality, bits, bites, and leaks became the prevailing currency. There seems to be less middle ground and more subsets: Lyrical Lemonade pop tarts like the Kid Laroi, volume-based grinders like YoungBoy Never Broke Again, indie iconoclasts like Armand Hammer, and classicist veterans like Black Thought. The artists who do exist in something like a marketable center — figures like 21 Savage, Lil Uzi Vert, Post Malone, Lil Baby, and Polo G — are still releasing statement albums, but whatever glimmers remain from that early 2010s prestige sprawl feel like the afterglow of a bygone epoch.

That might be for the best. Maybe rap is better off not catering to listeners like me, dilettante critics who crave a certain kind of widescreen accessibility and bombast, who love it when rap speaks in the language of rock and pop. There’s no doubt all these vibrant pockets of creativity that are currently percolating around the world add up to a healthy ecosystem, so don’t take this screed as a lament about the state of hip-hop. But if you feel like revisiting LONG.LIVE.A$AP this weekend, do pour one out for one of my favorite eras in rap history.

Weekly updates

“Am I a product of things that I saw?” Is the question A$AP Rocky poses on his new single ‘Same Problems.’ This track finds him paying tribute to the ones he’s lost in his life, those we’ve all lost in the hip-hop community. It’s one of those special moments where Rocky lets us behind the curtains of his stylish braggadocio, trading slick one-liners in for transparent vulnerability. “I think I was feeling remorse. I think I was feeling plight. I think I was also feeling a sense of guilt.” He recently told Zane Lowe in regards to the song, “I never took time out to really understand that I was part of the problem because I was contributing those kind of lyrics and whatnot to songs.” The inclusion of the word ‘Same’ in the title of this new song alludes to the fact that the feelings of this song are ones he’s experienced for years, which he is now articulating as a solidified artist entering his second decade as a hip-hop mainstay. This song’s release commemorates the 8th edition of Yams Day, and also the 10-year anniversary of his album Long. Live. A$AP ; the yearly anniversary of your debut album and the unfortunate passing of your close friend, mentor, and manager occurring within the same month speaks to the struggle Rocky expresses in the new single.

But while grief will always maintain a giant presence over the Harlem rapper’s January, he uses it as an opportunity to celebrate those around him, those who he dearly misses, and all that he and everyone else in A$AP MOB have achieved. Long. Live. A$AP marks the start of a strive and prosper that solidified Rocky as one of the game’s most creative minds today, who still continues to pave the way.

If we jump back to 2013, anticipation for Long. Live. A$AP was high. Rocky’s 2011 mixtape Live. Love. A$AP had already solidified itself as a future classic, with tracks like ‘Peso’ emerging from the depths of Datpiff to Hot 97 airwaves in a swift fashion. Rocky’s off-kilter style and unique fusion of east coast and southern hip-hop sounds ushered in 2012, which has been deemed as a “golden year” and “changing of the gods” by A$AP Yams, citing the emergence of acts like Flatbush Zombies and Action Bronson as the catalyst for this. Rocky’s mainstream emergence also began this year, rolling out singles like ‘Goldie’ and achieving his first Billboard Top 10 hit with the massive cut ‘F*ckin Problems’ alongside Kendrick Lamar, 2 Chainz, and Drake, the latter in which he formed a relationship with as the opener on the Club Paradise tour. Rocky’s ability to pen bars while thinking out of the box solidified him as the one holding the baton for a New York rap renaissance, bringing the new sounds of the city to the big stage, and breathing new life into the scene.

Speaking to Vulture about the album, A$AP Rocky said “They’re gonna’ see on this album how creative I really am.” He was right, as Long. Live. A$AP is a smorgasbord ofsounds, with Rocky bringing his Harlem swag to chopped-and-screwed cloud-rap like ‘LVL’, EDM-infused trap on the Skrillex-assisted ‘Wild For The Night’, and dreamy earworms like ‘Fashion Killa’. It celebrated the refreshing weirdness of hip-hop at the time, inviting a slew of acts into his purple-glazed representation of New York City on ‘1Train’, a posse cut that showcased everyone from Detroit oddball Danny Brown to the Alabama alien Yelawolf. Rocky spends the duration of the project either reflecting on his come-up, thinking back to the adversity he faced to reach this moment, or just simply flexing his self-confidence. The commercial success of Long. Live. A$AP represented the rarified excellence the art of the project achieved, debuting atop the Billboard Top 100 with 139,000 copies sold.

In retrospect, Long. Live. A$AP serves as a foreshadowing for Rocky’s eventual megastardom, as it solidified his lack of creative fear. His sophomore album At.Long. Last. A$AP steered away from seeking trends, instead opting for a psychedelic approach to contemporary hip-hop, finding hits in the form of the Rod Stewart-sampling ‘Everyday’, and the astral plane-propelled ‘L$D’. Experimentation was the focus of 2018’s Testing, where he warped the sounds of trap and Memphis-inspired tempos to create a satisfying sense of pandemonium. This ability to polymerise ideas also lent itself to assisting in the curation of A$AP Mob’s Cozy Tape series, as well as ventures outside of music fashion, bringing his infamous sense of style into projects with brands like Guess, and even reimagining the classic Osiris D3 Skate shoe with his Under Armour collaboration. Everything that Rocky does, aims to incite a difference in popular culture. As A$AP Rocky enters a new era of navigating his own reflections, he traverses with a history of always prospering. 10 years ago, he began the journey of his debut album “I thought I’d probably die in prison,” and he’s still here today. The rapper has spent the last decade reinvigorating his home city, championing new sounds and limitless creativity as he continued to rise in stardom, all while expanding his multifaceted artistry into different avenues. As we look forward to the next step in his unpredictable career of risk-taking with ‘Same Problems’, we know that he bears the weight of grief, and those feelings of loss linger. But he takes them along for the ride, sharing with the world through commemorative events like Yams Day. A$AP Rocky represents an appreciation of hip-hop culture; Harlem is harnessed to his soul, his fallen peers flow through his appreciative approach, and a love of this genre’s varied history howls through every piece of art he unleashes. On the road Rocky takes, long they will live.

A$AP Rocky Finally Announces the 'Don't Be Dumb' Album Release Date

A$AP Rocky is finally dropping his fourth studio album "Don't Be Dumb," six years after the release of 'TESTING.' Here's what we know about Flacko's 2024 drop.

Jun. 21 2024, Published 4:38 p.m. ET

Hip-hop fans are eagerly awaiting the release of A$AP Rocky's new album, "Don’t Be Dumb."

The Harlem-born rapper, whose real name is Rakim Mayers, has been teasing his upcoming project over the past year with a series of cryptic messages and new singles.

This album marks his first full-length release since 2018's "TESTING," and the anticipation is out of this world. Luckily, we finally have a release date!

Here’s what we know about Rocky’s upcoming album, which comes six years after his last record.

A$AP Rocky’s 2024 album is set to launch his music comeback.

A$AP Rocky’s 2024 album, "Don’t Be Dumb," is set to be his biggest release yet. Rocky was having his American Sabotage runway show at Paris Fashion Week when he announced the release date for his album, August 30.

Rocky has been hyping the album over the past few months. “Album finished. 'Don't Be Dumb.' Let's go,” Rocky exclaimed during an Amazon Music concert (per Highs Nobiety ).

The project features an impressive lineup of acts including Pharrell Williams, Tyler, the Creator, Madlib, Metro Boomin, and The Alchemist.

Rocky has also used live performances to build anticipation for the album.

At Rolling Loud Miami, he debuted several new songs, including one reportedly titled "Taylor Swift," which included lyrics aimed at an unnamed rival.

And while fans of Rocky have been asking for new music since he began teasing the album, the rapper said he wanted to take his time creating the project.

“Man it's not like I'm out here just doing furniture and clothes—no, I'm working on music every day and I'm just taking my time,” Rocky told GQ . “It takes me longer because I care. I’m [trying to] make a body of work that represents that year but also lasts and it ages like fine wine. I don't want to do songs [just] to stay relevant or prevalent in the rap game.”

Rocky burst onto the music scene with his 2011 mixtape, "Live.Love.ASAP," which featured hits like "Purple Swag" and "Peso." The mixtape was a huge success, and showcased Flacko’s unique blend of Harlem street rap with new-age production.

Following the success of his debut, Rocky released his first studio album, "Long.Live.ASAP." The album debuted at No. 1 on the Billboard 200 and included singles like "Fashion Killa," and "F**kin' Problems," featuring Drake, 2 Chainz, and Kendrick Lamar.

A$AP Rocky’s trial will not impact Don't Be Dumb's release.

As A$AP Rocky gears up for the release of his 2024 album, his trial for the assault of A$AP Relli looms.

According to Rolling Stone , Rocky’s trial is set to begin on October 21, which means any potential tour associated with the album will have to wait.

Rakim Mayers, aka A$AP Rocky, sits in the Clara Shortridge Foltz Criminal Justice Center during a preliminary hearing in his assault with a semiautomatic firearm case in Los Angeles, California

The Harlem rapper pled guilty to two felony counts of assault with a semiautomatic firearm. Prosecutors argue that Rocky violently attacked Relli, without regard for the A$AP Mob member’s health.

Inflation may be cooling, but taking a summer trip can still feel like a big swing financially. A recent Washington State University survey found that a whopping 96% of Americans say that current (or rising) prices will impact their travel plans, potentially affecting everything from destinations to activities.

To help you navigate it all, Money asked experts to share their top tips for saving money on summer travel. We found their suggestions all followed a major theme: It's crucial to not follow the crowd, both literally and figuratively.

Here are five ways to be frugal while still pulling off the vacation of your dreams:

1. Determine your travel priorities

Lindsay Kowalski, the owner of LK Travel Group , a Virtuoso member as an affiliate of Jetset World Travel, says the first step should be to determine what you care about most.

Is the most important part of your trip staying in a nice hotel? It might not be financially feasible for you to spend every night of a two-week Europe trip in five-star accommodations, she says, but knowing your priorities in advance can help you plan accordingly. For instance, maybe you stick to budget hotels for most of the vacation and blow it out at a Four Seasons for the last three nights.

Or do you care more about scoring a super-cheap flight ? Although many travelers want to “get out of the country and experience something completely new,” Laura Lindsay, global travel trends expert at Skyscanner , points out that domestic airfares are dropping from 2023. If inexpensive flights are your top concern, maybe skip the overseas jaunt this year and check out a U.S. beach town or national park to cut down on costs.

2. Buck the trend(s)

It’s no secret that Europe is a (literally) hot destination for Americans in the summer. That’s especially true this year, which will see Taylor Swift’s Eras Tour hit major cities in England, Germany and Italy as well as the Summer Olympics, set to take over Paris from July 26 through Aug. 11.

“Where everyone else is going, the hotels and airlines are aware, and they will rate their pricing accordingly,” says Samantha Collum, director of operations at River Oaks Travel , another Virtuoso member agency.

To save money, do the opposite of what everyone else is doing. Some top ski resorts in the U.S., for example, offer lower prices during the summer because they’re not in their peak season (winter). And there’s no shortage of activities: The mountains are beautiful, the hiking is good, et cetera.

If your heart is set on a particular location, Kowalski recommends looking at alternative, under-the-radar countries and cities that are nearby. Last year, she spent time in Slovenia, which has a lot of Italian culture but is much less costly than, say, tourist-heavy Rome.

Lindsay says spots like Split, Croatia; Zurich, Switzerland; and Nassau, Bahamas; have all seen price drops lately.

3. Book flights ASAP

Plan carefully, but do it fast.

“It’s generally best to book sooner rather than later,” Lindsay says. “Especially if you’re looking to catch a flight during one of the many holiday weekends this summer, you should start planning now before you miss out on the best deals.”

Money previously reported on “Goldilocks Windows,” or booking periods that are both not too early and also not too late. These typically fall one to three months before a domestic trip and two to eight months before an international trip, though summer tends to bring such high demand that it's smart to lock in flights even earlier than that.

FYI: According to Skyscanner data and flight price history, Tuesday is the best day to book, given that most airlines launch discounts on Monday nights. You may be able to save somewhere between 15% and 25%.

4. Be flexible with travel dates

Speaking of dates, one of the best ways to save money on summer travel is to play with timing. Kowalski says that many hotels have peak rates Thursday through Sunday, so if you can aim for the middle of the week, you may find a bargain.

“If you have any sort of flexibility in travel dates, that can work wonders,” Collum adds.

There’s no consensus on which day, specifically, is the cheapest to fly. But if you’re looking for a starting place, Hopper has long claimed the most inexpensive day to fly out domestically is Wednesday, and the cheapest to return is Tuesday. In 2022, Google determined that, on average, flights that depart on Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday were 12% cheaper than weekend departures.

5. Use your resources

Kowalski, who acknowledges she’s biased, emphasizes that travel advisors aren’t just booking agents — armed with years of experience, “they're advising you on where to spend your money.” Another plus: Travel advisors often have partnerships with hotels that can unlock better rates and cool amenities like free breakfast or spa credits.

While you certainly can book trips on your own using research from TikTok, you might want to loop in a travel advisor to make sure you’re hitting the right spots and getting the most bang for your buck.

Collum says sometimes, folks to come to her after buying flights to places like Mykonos and Santorini in Greece in March… when many hotels and beaches are closed. If they’d consulted her first, she could have stopped them from wasting their money.

Tapping other resources is important, too. Airline and hotel loyalty programs can help you access upgrades or free drinks. Websites like Skyscanner and Hotwire can help you comparison-shop for rental car reservations. And don’t forget to check whether you get benefits through any clubs or memberships you have, like AAA.

“Your personal car insurance, credit card benefits or even college alumni association might be a sleeping giant of hidden savings,” Lindsay says.

UK election latest: New cabinet in place - but 'shock' as PM Keir Starmer snubs senior figure

Sir Keir Starmer has named the bulk of his cabinet, with Rachel Reeves the first female chancellor. Rishi Sunak said "sorry" to voters as he resigned as Tory leader. His party endured a torrid election night, with the Lib Dems (71 seats) and Reform (five seats) making big strides.

Live reporting by Samuel Osborne, Mark Wyatt, Emily Mee and Bhvishya Patel

The historic nature of the general election results has largely focused on the seismic reversal of the previous Tory majority and the magnitude of the Labour landslide.

But amid discussion of those headline developments, the new governing party recorded a less heralded milestone in Earley and Woodley in Berkshire, a constituency being contested for the first time after boundary changes.

There, Yuan Yang claimed a narrow victory for Labour over the Conservatives' Pauline Jorgensen - in the process becoming the first Chinese-born candidate to be elected to British parliament.

Previously she has been a journalist for the Financial Times.

England manager Gareth Southgate has wished new Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer well .

Asked if he had any advice for the new PM, Southgate replied: "Well, I'm not envious of his job. No, I don't have any advice.

"I think when you're in a position of responsibility, as I am, you realise that advice comes from every direction.

"Everybody has a simple solution to complex problems, so I'm sure he's going to be inundated with that sort of feel.

"Yeah, having been in the role I have, the one thing I would do is not be offering any additional issues for him by speaking publicly about anything, so I wish him well.

"We want a strong country. We all want the best possible conditions in the UK and whoever is in charge, whichever government is in charge, that's what we all desire."

So, the UK has yet another new prime minister - the fifth since David Cameron resigned in 2016.

But this election has not only delivered a new PM, it has also put a different party in power.

It is the biggest change in the UK political landscape since 2010.

If you are not British - and find the whole thing a little confusing - we have put together the following explainer...

Former defence secretary Ben Wallace has tweeted his congratulations to Labour's John Healey, who has taken up the role.

Mr Healey had served as shadow defence secretary since 2020, while Mr Wallace was defence secretary between 2019 and 2023.

Mr Wallace said he wished his former opposition well, adding: "We agreed on much in my time."

Sir Keir Starmer took the keys to Downing Street yesterday after voters handed Labour a landslide victory in the General Election.

While timings might change, here is a look at the new PM's next few days in power...

The new cabinet will meet for the first time this morning.

Appointments of junior ministers are likely to continue, as will calls from world leaders and first ministers of the devolved nations.

Legislative priorities and the timing of any major policy announcements will also need to be worked out.

Sir Keir has signalled that at least three housing announcements could be made in the first two weeks of a Labour government.

The new parliament will be summoned to meet.

The first business will be to choose a Commons Speaker - with Sir Lindsay Hoyle set to be re-elected.

Congratulating the Speaker will be Sir Keir's first opportunity to speak at the despatch box as prime minister and he will likely offer some rhetoric on the future.

Swearing-in could begin on the same day or the next and will continue for several days.

MPs and peers will take the oath, with the government going first, followed by some other established figures.

MPs are not allowed to speak in debates, vote or receive their salary until they make an oath or solemn affirmation of allegiance to the Crown.

The King will preside over the pageantry of the state opening of parliament, marking the formal start of the new parliamentary session at the Palace of Westminster.

A key component of the ceremony is the King's Speech, where he sets out the government's legislative programme for the coming session.

The UK is hosting a gathering of the European Political Community, the body that brings all 27 EU member countries together with 20 others from outside the bloc.

Sir Keir will welcome about 50 heads of government to Blenheim Palace in Oxfordshire, giving him an opportunity to set the tone for his government's approach to the UK's relationship with the EU.

If you didn't manage to stay up, we've collected the key moments from a dramatic election night in the video below.

They include the first result to be declared, the first Tory to lose to a Labour candidate, and the cabinet ministers who lost their seats.

Plus Rishi Sunak's admission of defeat, and Sir Keir Starmer's victory speech.

Watch it all unfold below...

Politics is showbusiness for ugly people - according to the crude and perhaps unfair saying by American political consultant Paul Begala.

However, occasionally famous faces from the world of entertainment and sport do cross over into the ruthless, back-stabbing world of politics.

Sometimes they are hugely successful - just look at the case of the late US actor Ronald Reagan or former Pakistani cricket star Imran Khan, who both ended up running their respective countries.

In the UK, former actress Glenda Jackson, ex-GMTV presenter Esther McVey and Olympic gold medallist Sebastian Coe are among those who have switched careers in the spotlight to become MPs.

However, this time around, the story was mostly one of failure for the celebrities - and sort-of celebrities - who ran in the 2024 UK general election...

US secretary of state Antony Blinken has held a call with the UK's new Foreign Secretary David Lammy this evening.

During the call, the US official congratulated Mr Lammy for his appointment, spokesperson Matthew Miller said.

Mr Miller said: "The pair emphasised the enduring and essential importance of the US-UK special relationship in addressing the most pressing global challenges, including reaching an immediate and enduring ceasefire in Gaza, and supporting Ukraine against Russia's brutal aggression.

"The secretary noted that he looks forward to welcoming the foreign secretary to the NATO summit in Washington next week."

Labour MP Jess Phillips is back with Beth and Ruth to un-pick the election results.

On this episode they discuss how Jess was heckled when she narrowly held her seat of Birmingham Yardley.

They also look at the wider Labour results and talk about Rishi Sunak’s resignation speech, as well as discussing why Reform and the Liberal Democrats took seats from the two main parties.

Sir Keir Starmer and Irish premier Simon Harris have committed to reset and strengthen Anglo-Irish relations "with urgency and ambition".

The taoiseach "warmly congratulated" Sir Keir on his appointment as prime minister and said he looked forward to a "close and constructive" working relationship.

He also accepted an invite to visit Downing Street on 17 July.

"The taoiseach and the prime minister spoke of their shared determination to reset and strengthen the bilateral relationship between Ireland and the United Kingdom and to set about that task with urgency and ambition," a statement said.

"They discussed Northern Ireland, welcoming the restoration of the institutions, including the full operation of North-South and East-West Good Friday Agreement institutions, as well as legacy issues."

Northern Ireland First Minister Michelle O'Neill and Deputy First Minister Emma Little-Pengelly also spoke to Sir Keir by phone and congratulated him.
