Why Life Really is a Journey and Not a Destination

  • January 7th, 2019

Ralph Waldo Emerson is often credited with the iconic cliche (made famous by Aerosmith in their 1992 hit single, Amazing), “Life is a journey, not a destination.”

In fact, Emerson never wrote those words. It’s possible what he did write was its impetus:

“To finish the moment, to find the journey’s end in every step of the road, to live the greatest number of good hours, is wisdom.” ~ Ralph Waldo Emerson

life's a journey meme

I’ve always hated the “Life is a journey” meme. Life is about the destination. It’s about where you finish. Did you win or lose? If it isn’t, what the heck are we doing all this work for? Maybe it was being raised in rural Upstate New York, watching my working-class parents show up and “Do the work” every day without any tangible improvement in our lives. Maybe it’s that as a kid, I never had a vision of what I wanted my life to be… other than better. I knew I needed to get out of my small town and anything beyond that seemed like gravy. That life could ever be about the painful grind of the “Journey” seemed a sentiment more suited for the privileged and self-indulgent. Then I read  The Artist’s Way  by Julia Cameron in 2013. The Artist’s Way My reason for reading The Artist’s Way was how terrible I felt after committing to writing my first book,  Content Warfare. I wanted the goal (or, in context, the destination) of publishing a collection of stories outlining the evergreen content marketing tactics and strategies I’d used to dominate my local marketplace. The problem was I had no idea how to write a book. The task felt overwhelming. My son, Duke, was only six months old, and I still had a full-time job at the insurance agency. There was no “Extra time” to sit and write a book. In The Artist’s Way, Cameron outlines her “Morning Pages” ritual (the daily practice of writing three unscripted stream-of-consciousness pages each morning). Cameron’s morning pages gave me a process, and the process gave me hope. “As you move toward a dream, the dream moves toward you.” ~  Julia Cameron

As crazy as this might sound, I’d never set a specific process against a goal before sticking to it. Not in sports, not in school, and certainly not at work.

It turns out cliche motivational advice can still be good advice.

Publishing Content Warfare wasn’t nearly as satisfying as the grind of producing the work. Writing a book is mentally and emotionally exhausting, but you also get the opportunity to open your creativity valve.

I forgot about writing a book.

I forgot about the deadline.

I forgot about what other people might think about a certain idea.

I just wrote.

Every day I wrote.

Slowly, word by word, page by page, day by day, I began to find enjoyment in the process of writing.

This hasn’t always been the case.

Early on, the joy of writing was publishing. All I wanted to do was hit publish. I couldn’t wait. I wanted to see my work live. I wanted others to engage with it and send me those little gratifying hits of dopamine we’ve all grown to need.

The crap I’ve published to have something new to share… ugh. But those five grueling months, grinding through Content Warfare, changed everything.

Now it’s all about the process: from research to narrative design to adding supporting media and editing. The process is satisfaction.

Today it takes me twice as long to publish an article as it did when I started writing.

At face value, it feels like the opposite should be true. But this is the dirty little secret of writing, as you mature into the skill, writing doesn’t become easier or faster.

You hold yourself to higher standards and demand more from the articles you share with the world. And it is through relenting to process doing the work that I finally came to understand the cliche, “It’s the journey, not the destination.”

SOLUTION: NO MORE GOALS

When we focus on the goal over the process, we open ourselves up to fear and doubt.

“The amateur believes he must first overcome his fear; then he can do his work. The professional knows that fear can never be overcome. He knows there is no such thing as a fearless warrior or a dread-free artist.” ~ Steven Pressfield, The War of Art

We put the goal on a pedestal. As  James Clear writes ,

Winners and losers have the same goals.
Winners fall in love with the process (the journey).
“The opposite of fear is love — love of the challenge, love of the work, the pure joyous passion to take a shot at our dream and see if we can pull it off.” ~ Steven Pressfield, Do the Work

Winners fall in love with the process because that’s all they can control.

In a recent episode of  Tim Ferriss’s podcast , Jason Fried, founder of Basecamp, shared his perspective on goals:

“I don’t have any goals. I’ve never had any goals. Goals are not something that I pay attention to. I just sort of do what I feel like is the right thing to do in any given situation.”

Fried went on to explain:

“For me, I don’t want to compare myself to an idea I had two years prior of where I wanted to be. I don’t know where I’m going to want to be in two years. So, to set a goal that’s long-term, in some cases you’re actually setting it for who you are when you set it versus who you are when you’re going to get there.”

Goals are made up.

Worse, they’re made up to fit who you are today or who you think you may want to be. Neither of which is who you will be when you get there.

Instead, I recommend giving  James Clear’s Compass Theory  a try:

“The problem with a treasure hunt is that most people spend all of their time thinking about the treasure. The fastest way to get to a particular spot, however, is to set your compass and start walking. The idea here is to commit to your goal with the utmost conviction. Develop a clear, single-minded focus for where you are headed. Then, however, you do something strange. You release the desire to achieve a particular outcome and focus instead on the slow march forward. Pour all of your energy into the journey, be present in the moment, be committed to the path you are walking. Know that you are moving unwaveringly in one clear direction and that this direction is right for you, but never get wrapped up in a particular result or achieving a certain goal by a specific time. In other words, your goal becomes your compass, not your buried treasure. The goal is your direction, not your destination. The goal is a mission that you are on, a path that you follow. Whatever comes from that path — whatever treasure you happen to find along this journey — well, that’s just fine. It is the commitment to walking the path that matters.”

Using Clear’s metaphor, if your goal drives motivation, you’re leaving yourself open to lose course, lose hope, and ultimately never find the destination you seek.

However, by always focusing on the compass, you can easily adapt and adjust course as needed, staying true to the process.

Consistent forward progress for the win.

Worry about what you can control: the quality of your work and how often you produce that work.

These form the foundation of your process.

I’m not saying you shouldn’t set goals, don’t get all messed up about them.

Instead, focus every ounce of your energy on what you’re doing to get there.

It is amazing that a worn-out cliche, such as “Life is a journey, not a destination,” can be cemented at the center of so much truth.

20 Life Memes That Will Change Everything in a Few Seconds

We’re busy people who have to be on our hustle from the moment our feet hit the floor until our head hits the pillow.

We’ve got work to do, family to ignore, Game of Thrones episodes to watch, and that’s before we even get into our DVR backlog. Then we have to do some killing in Overwatch , write a 40 paragraph tirade on Amazon about the movie “ Teen Witch ,” and stuff down some egg McMuffins while mainlining Diet Dr. Pepper. There just isn’t time to be philosophical between cat videos.

The best we can do is whatever fortune cookie wisdom we’re able to retweet.

Life memes

Cool Life Memes

To save you even more time, we’ve wrangled together 20 life memes to help you get all the bite-sized wisdom you can handle. They’ll rock your world in scant seconds.

1. The only way to make sense out of change is to plunge into it, move with it, and join the dance

via funnyand.com

Here, Zen teacher and metaphysical weirdo Alan Watts lays it out for us: Change is going to happen. The trick isn’t to making the changes stop, it’s in learning to play with reality and join in the fun. You can’t stop the train, but if you’re savvy, you’ll learn to ride it and enjoy the view.

2. At any given moment you have the power to say: this is not how the story is going to end

Christine Mason Miller - life changing meme

Offering up hope not only for those who might be thinking about suicide, but anyone who feels like they’ve hit a wall, Christine tells us to flip the script and restart our day, week, month, or life, by altering the page and telling a new tale. As long as you’re living, you can find another path and rewrite the end.

3. You change your life by changing your heart

via quotesgram.com

While the world outside will inevitably change, you can’t see it any differently if you don’t also shift. Expanding on the notion Watts presents, Max Lucado tells us that even when every single day seems the same, everything can be turned on its head if we just swing our insides in a different direction.

4. You don’t have to be great to get started, but you have to get started to be great

via millionpictureblog.com

Les Brown might not have a swoosh under his name or be trying to force you to buy overpriced shoes made overseas, but the sentiment is the same: You just have to do it. Everyone’s a beginner at some point, so don’t worry if you fail. Start, try, and strive…it’s the only path to greatness, unless you were born with a silver spoon or a sexy body. Then people believe you’re great when you aren’t.

5. When life gives you lemons grab the tequila & salt

via pinterest.com

The same way the sourest grapes can make the most amazing wines, so too can tough times have their place when paired with the right amount of booze . For those that don’t drink, it’s an example of how everything has a purpose, you just need to find it.

6. There’s no way I was born to just pay bills and die

via fiveablog.wordpress.com

7. I smile all the time so that nobody knows how sad & lonely I really am

Most of us work jobs we hate just to buy things we don’t need to impress people we don’t like – at least according to Fight Club paraphrasing. There’s a whole lot more than getting by and keeping the creditors at bay, if you learn to simplify and stay out of debt. Live well within your means and you’ll be able to live much well-er.

via funnyand.com

A treatise on modern society, most of us have to put on a set of masks each day just to face the world. We hide our suffering, even though almost all of us suffer in the same way. That facade of joy could be killing us, and we can be amazed what happens when we let it drop.

8. Once we have Agency & Dignity about the way we’re living our lives and we understand our role, that is when we can move together to make sure our species has a healthy place to live

via asustainablemind.com

A simple statement about mobilizing as a species to help protect the place we all call home. When we see how powerful we are and shake off the shackles of helplessness, we can attain greatness for all and make every life, every day, and every piece of our world better in every way.

9. Don’t wait until you’re not scared to do the thing you want to do. Do it scared

via businessboutique.com

Being given the courage to change anything doesn’t mean you’ll be fearless, it means you’ll have just enough strength to survive the experience. There’s no guarantees, and if you don’t try, you can’t succeed. Fear can be a disability more real and more powerful than any physical ailment. Don’t let it cripple you.

10. Attention is the rarest and purest form of generosity

via abundantlifechildren.com

In order to be generous, you don’t need riches to give away, organs to donate, or to open your home to every wayward soul. All you need to do is give the one thing you always have: Your attention. Being heard and understood is something almost every human craves. In trying to do that, you are giving the gift of your time , which is the one thing you can’t get more of.

11. If you didn’t see it with your own eyes or hear it with your own ears, don’t invent it with your small mind & share it with your big mouth

via sodahead.com

Aggressive, but in the digital age of misinformation, the message here is important: Admit what you don’t know and avoid spreading lies, rumors, or toxic half-truths. Speak your own truth and leave the rest alone. We are all ignorant, we simply don’t all admit to it.

12. Honesty is a very expensive gift, don’t expect it from cheap people

via doublie.com

Warren Buffett knows the price of a dollar, and the cost of being completely forthright. No matter how wealthy a person is , or how prestigious their position seems, if they are telling lies, they are a cheap person who doesn’t value you enough to tell you the truth. Ignore them and let them disappear.

13. I think I’m speaking for a bunch of girls when I say that the idea that feminism is completely natural and shouldn’t even be something that I’d assumed was natural for a long time. It’s not some crazy kind of alien concept to me.

via attn.com

A stunning example of how far human beings have come in the last hundred years, a young girl like Lorde shows the distance we’ve come toward attaining real equality among the genders. Gradually we are moving forever toward equal rights for all people, such that it becomes as ordinary as breathing.

14. Do not wait for leaders; do it alone, person to person

via quotesgram.com

Apathy is one of the blights that affects humankind, and complacency can lead to destruction as surely as putting match to tinder. We don’t need to be part of an immense movement, just a single person reaching out to another, offering what we can and thus becoming the leader our lives require.

15. The illiterate of the 21st century will not be those who cannot read and write, but those who cannot learn, unlearn and relearn

via aplanetruth.info

Science is unique in that it happily changes as new evidence becomes available. As people, we need to be as flexible, otherwise we close our minds and our hearts to newer, better experiences, condemning us to live in darkness and foolishness, rather than walk in the sunlight of discovery.

16. There is nothing which I dread so much as a division of the republic into two great parties, each arranged under its leader, and concerting [organizing] measures in opposition to each other. This, in my humble opinion, is to be dreaded as the greatest political evil under our constitution.

via thelastamericanvagabond.com

A poignant lesson for every industrialized nation that bears a two-party system: Even many of the founding fathers hated the idea. Voting a straight ticket without making up our own minds turns us into blind followers. We should never give up our free will and freedom to think by following a pack. Our countries cannot stand so divided.

17. It’s not the job of the marginalized to make the privileged feel comfortable

via family-sprouts.com

A challenge to anyone who has become exploited by those who are handed the world on a platter: Stand up for yourself and stop being a slave to the few that hold you down. Whether it’s economics, social status, or simply the cruel exploiting us, we should not make our oppression easy on our oppressors.

18. Don’t let the shame of quitting keep you from respecting your needs in the moment

via onceandalwaysanathlete.com

Good advice: Quit when you must. There’s a time to strive and a time to give up. Know when to surrender because the battle is lost. Respect your needs and ignore those who would shame you for deciding to do what is best, even if it means admitting powerlessness. Being true to yourself means knowing when to say “stop.”

19. When a person tells you that you hurt them, you don’t get to decide that you didn’t

via exiledcreatures.blogspot.com

Accept the pain you have caused and learn from it. To do otherwise is denial or madness.

20. Chill, Homie. You need to let that shit go.

via infectious-awareness.tumblr.com

Happiness is often not what you have, but what you release. Let things go, and all can be well. Hold onto that which we cannot change and we poison our mind, waste our energy, and close ourselves off from that which we can alter.

10 Truly Funny Disney Princess Memes

<p>When we see the ending to Snow White we see a very particular story. Well, that’s a very different story.</p> <p>She probably only remembers taking a bite out of a juicy red apple, and the next thing she knows she’s waking up in the arms of her one true love. She has no idea that she basically died, from her point of view the ending had no conflict for her at all!</p>

<p>One of our favorite things about Disney princess moments is the confession of love. How can you watch these without having your heart totally melt? <p>There are a lot more movies in the Disney universe than you think. Disney also owns Marvel, which makes all the superhero characters from that world part of Disney as well. Music Review: Johnny Cash's ‘Songwriter,' a collection of unreleased songs from 1993, is a journey

In 1993, Johnny Cash was between record contracts — and just about to embark on an iconic collaboration with producer Rick Rubin that would span the last 10 years of his life, starting with 1994’s “American Recordings.”

NEW YORK -- In 1993, Johnny Cash was between record contracts — and just about to embark on an iconic collaboration with producer Rick Rubin that would span the last 10 years of his life, starting with 1994's “American Recordings."

During that crucial time in his career, Cash immersed himself in crafting and recording original demos that showcased his songwriting prowess. Those songs, once set aside, will be released Friday as a complete album. Cash's son, John Carter Cash, stripped the recordings back to just his father's voice and acoustic guitar — and enlisted co-producer David “Fergie” Ferguson and some musicians his father previously worked with to round out the recordings.

Aptly titled “Songwriter,” the album features 11 tracks all penned by Cash. Just two tracks will be familiar to fans of the Rubin records: “Drive On” and “Like a Soldier” were previously released on “American Recordings.” While the Rubin renditions favored deeply-felt minimalism — just an acoustic guitar and Cash's idiosyncratic vocal tone — the “Songwriter” versions possess a more layered sound with additional instrumentation. Not better, just different.

Emphasizing Cash’s role as a songwriter, this collection exists in contrast to his typical albums or recorded live performances, which often blend his own compositions with other writer’s songs. This album allows listeners to appreciate Cash as a performer, composer and lyricist, highlighting a unique intersection of his artistic journey.

The previously released first single, the rockabilly infused “Well Alright,” exudes Cash’s unmistakable style to such a degree that it could have easily found a place alongside classics like “Big River." (In an alternative timeline, the track might appear in The Grateful Dead ’s repertoire back in the day — they've certainly covered many Cash songs.)

In whole, "Songwriter” provides insight into a short creative phase of Cash’s career that would become interrupted by a brilliant creative collaboration with Rubin. While not his most audacious work, “Songwriter” still serves as a poignant journey into a defining moment of Cash’s musical legacy. And who doesn't love to hear previously unheard material from the Man in Black?

Meme Stock or Vaccine Stock? Novavax’s Identity Crisis and Why It Matters for Investors

Could 'Roaring Kitty' be to blame for the exaggerated rally in Novavax stock?

  • Novavax ( NVAX ) should benefit from the FDA’s recommendation to target the JN. 1 Covid-19 variant.
  • However, Novavax shares are already very richly valued.
  • Investors shouldn’t buy Novavax stock at its current price.

Novavax stock - Meme Stock or Vaccine Stock? Novavax’s Identity Crisis and Why It Matters for Investors

Source: Ascannio/Shutterstock.com

Does it make sense to invest in COVID-19 vaccine stocks in 2024? It should make sense, at least in theory, since U.S. health regulators effectively gave Novavax (NASDAQ: NVAX ) the green light to target a specific Covid-19 variant. Yet, it’s too late to buy Novavax stock with confidence as meme-stock madness sent the share price to the moon already.

I’ll bet you never imagined that there would be a connection between GameStop (NYSE: GME ) and Novavax. Yet, in these bizarre times, there’s actually a link between the two companies, or at least between their stocks. Novavax is a promising vaccine developer, but the current circumstances make investing in their shares challenging.

Great News for Novavax

In a watershed moment for certain American vaccine manufacturers, the Food and Drug Administration recommended that this year’s Covid-19 booster shots should target the JN. 1 variant . That’s great news for Novavax, which had already tested a JN. 1 vaccine in its lab.

Novavax Chief Medical Officer Robert Walker recently asserted, “We are currently manufacturing JN. 1 vaccines.” He added, “In order to have a protein vaccine ready to go Sept. 1, we are prepared to provide the JN. 1 vaccine.”

That’s game-changing news for Novavax, to say the least. It really wasn’t that long ago — February of 2023 , to be specific — when Novavax had issued a “going concern” warning and raised “substantial doubt” about the company’s ability to continue operating.

Thus, it’s understandable that Novavax stock staged a pre-summer relief rally. With just an FDA recommendation, Novavax seems to have ascended from a “going concern” underachiever to a serious vaccine-market contender.

More Than Just a Relief Rally

Yet, the spellbinding rally in the Novavax share price this year isn’t, I believe, solely a function of FDA-prompted optimism. Surely, there’s another force at work here, and it has nothing to do with vaccines.

Indirectly, I think “Roaring Kitty” is involved. He’s the meme lord whose real name is Keith Gill, and who inspired legions of followers to buy GameStop stock.

Gill is known as “Roaring Kitty” on social media, and in mid-May, he  resurfaced on X  (formerly known as Twitter) for the  first time in a long time . Consequently, the share prices of GameStop and another meme target, AMC Entertainment  (NYSE: AMC ), zoomed higher.

Surely, it’s not just a coincidence that Novavax stock catapulted higher in mid-May, during the resurgence of meme-stock mania. This wasn’t just a relief rally for COVID-19 vaccine stocks; it was a full-on meme parade.

Novavax and the company’s investors got swept up in that parade. As a result, Novavax is overvalued and the share price is dislocated. So, I hate to say it, but at the current price, it makes little sense to take a share position in Novavax.

Sadly, Novavax Stock Is Uninvestable

Novavax could really be turning a corner as the FDA recommends targeting the JN. 1 Covid-19 variant. Novavax could be early to market with a vaccine for this particular Covid-19 strain.

However, “Roaring Kitty” indirectly caused major dislocations in certain stocks. That’s bad news for anyone who wanted to invest in Novavax based on the company’s legitimate comeback story. Thus, Novavax stock needs to pull back to a more sensible price, such as $7.50 or $8, before it would make sense to take a share position.

Oiselle Review: The Running Brand For Women That Embraces The Journey

It’s one thing for a brand to use women’s empowerment as a marketing tactic. It’s another to actually empower women. Businesses with savvy advertising teams know that all too well, and often bank on the naiveté of their audiences as an excuse to talk the talk without walking the walk.

Boutique women’s running brand Oiselle doesn’t take shortcuts, though. Maybe doing so would have resulted in just as many sales without nearly as much effort. But Oiselle would rather earn the trust of the running community than scheme for it. The brand has committed to playing the long game, building up a steadfast audience over its 17 years in business by treating their clothing as a means to an end. Oiselle designs apparel for women who have more on their minds than their training plan. From that perspective, clothes become tools for performance—not just aesthetics.

Oiselle commits to empowering women who run.

Women who wear Oiselle learn to think about running differently as a result. They accomplish more on the big stage because they feel capable of doing more behind the scenes. And most importantly, they see running as an integral part of life instead of an escape from it. Oiselle allows women to bring their whole selves to each run.

As a busy runner who squeezes training sessions into every spare window of opportunity, I tested some of Oiselle’s fan favorites to see if they could streamline my schedule. A few key design details have had a noticeable impact on how wisely I can use my time. The sense of safety, comfort and ease that I get from wearing Oiselle apparel translates to faster paces and fewer interruptions. That’s all thanks to the purpose behind the product. Here’s how Oiselle helps women like me strengthen their relationship with running for the sake of enjoyment and performance.

Casper Vs. Nectar: Which Popular Foam Mattress Suits You Better?

The best wayfair outdoor furniture deals to shop this weekend, show up to stand out.

Talent isn’t everything. Even athletes with so-called “natural talent” can’t put their genetics to good use without applying themselves properly. Behind every personal record (PR) is a runner who chose to show up for the daily grind and trust in the process. As running coaches David and Megan Roche like to say, “overnight successes are actually years in the making.”

But the PR’s themselves get more attention than the work that went into them. It’s much easier to stand on a starting line than it is to show up for all the training leading up to that point—especially for female athletes. Safety concerns, physiological burdens and the demands of motherhood make it more difficult to clock quality mileage. Oiselle aims to reduce the barriers to entry for women who struggle to make the miles happen.

“Most runners tend to want to run to perform,” acknowledges Oiselle CEO Arielle Knutson . “But performance starts with the ability to move comfortably and sustainably.”

With that in mind, Oiselle puts the focus on facilitating movement first and foremost. The Oiselle design process starts with meeting the needs of female runners. Performance benefits come about as a side effect of fulfilling those unique needs.

The author, Lucie Hanes, on a run in the Oiselle Toolbelt Roga Shorts

To truly make movement more accessible for women, though, running apparel has to go beyond the basics. Sweat-wicking properties and lightweight fabrics might speak to runners in general, but they aren’t enough to support female runners specifically.

Knutson breaks down the concerns of female runners into four main categories: safety, storage, body and time. Women have good reason to worry about making it home from their runs. The news proves that even the most mundane neighborhood loop comes with potential consequences. Knutson also points out that “when you have breasts and hips, your body moves differently than if you don’t, and clothes feel different depending on how those elements of the female body present themselves on different people.”

And speaking of female physiology, we have different nutritional needs than our male counterparts. According to Dr. Stacy Sims , author of two books and over 70 peer-reviewed studies on the physiological needs of female athletes, “our core body temperature rises about twice as quickly when we start exercising,” which increases our risk of dehydration and electrolyte imbalance. Research on the prominence of low energy availability in female athletes suggests that women should pay extra attention to mid-run fueling, too. All that adds up to more essentials (see: quick calories) that have to go somewhere.

360-degree pockets on the Toolbelt Roga Shorts allow for easy access to mid-run fuel.

Every piece of Oiselle apparel addresses at least one of these categories, if not all four at once. The Firecracker line features reflective bird patterns for visibility in low light, while plentiful pockets provide handy storage for phones, gels, layers and anything else your run requires.

A wide variety of lengths, inseams and heights account for the different ways that female bodies convey their curves. Long sleeves with built-in watch windows accommodate sneak peaks at your metrics in cold weather, for the many women who struggle with poor circulation. Bras with adjustable, hook-able straps accommodate nursing mothers. High-waisted bottoms prop up the abdomen for moms-to-be. And subtle colors, patterns and fits make Oiselle clothing on the whole appropriate for runs, gym sessions to carpool duties to Zoom meetings when there’s no time for a wardrobe change.

Wide straps plus a phone pocket between the shoulder blades combine comfort with accessibility on ... [+] the Flyout Bra.

These are the kinds of details that make or break running apparel—and running in general—for women. The “shrink it and pink it” approach to female gear design has left us believing that we’re the problem because we can’t make do with the same things that work for men. But why should we? Women come to running with our own bodies, responsibilities and priorities. Oiselle puts running in the context of life as a woman.

Root For The Underbird

The busy lives and full plates of female runners means that it can be tough for even the most elite athletes to put all the pieces together. Oiselle took a step beyond thoughtful gear design to give women with top-tier potential the opportunity to actually apply it.

“Oiselle works with athletes who are up-and-comers, who have yet to be sponsored, because a support system can mean everything,” explains Knutson. “We launched the Underbird program leading up to the Olympic Team Trials Marathon to support five elite athletes who wanted to race for a spot on the team but might not have been able to get there logistically or perform their best on their own.”

These five runners received a stipend, gear and a platform to tell their stories leading up to the Trials. The storytelling component holds the most value for Oiselle. Knutson recognizes that “there’s validity to sponsoring the very top athletes who are winning: they’re influential and have high reach, which matters for brand exposure. But always winning isn’t always relatable. The everyday runner tends to relate more with stories that include the challenges that all athletes experience, but that those in the spotlight all the time don’t necessarily share. Life is not linear and it’s inspiring to hear about athletes who are achieving that level of excellence while being normal humans with setbacks and work and families and late-onsets to running.”

The Oiselle Underbirds told their stories en route to the Olympic Trials. None of their contracts contained clauses dependent on performance or podiums. One runner didn’t even make it to the start line due to injury. Oiselle’s response? The brand continued supporting her through the Boston Marathon for another chance at seeing her efforts through. Oiselle doesn’t hold its athletes to certain standards because Knutson and her team understand that nothing in running (or in life) is guaranteed. Supporting an ambitious athlete doesn’t ensure results. It does, however, give them the best chance at success.

“When we work with an athlete, it’s not just about the athlete but about the whole person,” emphasizes Knutson. “We’re working with them on the running level and the human level. It’s not just about winning or performance, it’s about the whole self. Ultimately, our athletes go on to perform well because they feel supported on all levels.”

Oiselle Gear Review

Just as race results don’t define athletes, clothes don’t define Oiselle. The intention behind them does. These are a few pieces of apparel that exemplify Oiselle’s intentions for female runners of all backgrounds and ambitions.

A Hands-Free, Chafe-Free Sports Bra

Oiselle flyout bra.

What’s with all the flimsy, strappy sports bras out there? Those might work for a low-impact yoga class, but they don’t do much for stabilization while running, even for the not-so-well endowed. The Flyout Bra trades spindly straps for comprehensive coverage from shoulder to shoulder. The broad back provides more support up front by redistributing some of the weight. Wide shoulder straps won’t dig into the skin either, especially under the pressure of running vests or bulky layers.

Oiselle capitalizes on the additional back coverage by including a phone pocket between the shoulder blades. The Flyout isn’t the first sports bra with a phone pocket that I’ve tried, but it is the first that I’ve been able to actually use. Others put the pocket too low on the back for my short arms and inflexible shoulders to reach, or made the pocket too narrow for a phone to easily slide in and out of without a wrestling match. The Flyout’s smooth fabric in combination with the dimensions and placement of the pocket make this bra a comfortable, functional phone storage solution.

A Full-Coverage Top To Streamline Your Runs

Oiselle flyout long sleeve.

I will never buy a long sleeve shirt without a watch window ever again. And now I can finally retire all the shirts that I cut my own poor excuse for a watch window into. What seems like a small detail bears a lot of significance on the run. Women run colder than men, especially in the extremities, and experience reduced blood flow in the hands and feet in response to cold exposure. With that in mind, there’s no compromising on hand coverage during chilly runs. That shouldn’t mean that women have to sacrifice other aspects of their run in exchange.

With the Flyout Long Sleeve, we don’t have to. A simple, subtle slit in each wrist opens up to reveal your watch screen so runners can keep an eye on their metrics without breaking stride to fiddle with layers. Those wasted seconds add up when you’re squeezing miles into your schedule like a game of Tetris. Plus, hitting paces and sticking to rest-to-work ratios matters during high intensity interval sessions. Access to data in real time makes a difference in helping runners meet their goals for the workout.

Watch window aside, the Flyout Long Sleeve wins in brisk weather with its relaxed yet secure fit and ultralight yet protective fabric. Thumb holes and reinforced hems hold the whole shirt in place. No sweat, no chill, no bulk.

Flowy Shorts That Don't Skimp On Storage

Oiselle toolbelt roga shorts.

Running in flowy shorts feels nice and airy during warm weather workouts, but at the cost of practicality. Barely-there designs don’t offer much or any storage space, even for just the essentials. I’m left to choose between opting for compression shorts, which don’t allow for nearly as much air flow on hot days, and breaking out a vest or belt, which feels like overkill on shorter runs. But the Toolbelt Roga Shorts have solved that dilemma. These shorts make smart use of real estate with 360-degree pockets all around the waistband. That way, the legs remain loose and light while the naturally tight part of the shorts holds your belongings.

The stretch-mesh waistband pockets lie open at the top for easy access, with one zipper pocket on the sacrum for valuables, though even the open-top pockets pass the jump test for keeping a tight grip on their contents. All the pockets, both open and zippered, are deep enough to hold extra-large smartphones, too. I do find that these shorts run a bit big. Luckily, an internal drawcord helps cinch in the waist to keep the Roga’s from slipping, especially when loaded down with equipment.

Find them in three inseam lengths: Mac (1.75-inchh), Regular (4-inch) and Long (6-inch).

Compression Shorts That Double As A Running Belt

Oiselle o-mazing power shorts.

I’m a big fan of storage around the waist rather than down the leg. The female body’s center of gravity lies right below the belly button. Carrying weight close to that centralized point feels more stable and eliminates the bounce factor that throws off your stride. The 360-degree belt-style pocket system on the O-Mazing Power Shorts makes them similar to the Toolbelt Roga Shorts above, but in a lightly compressive rather than loose style. Unlike the Roga’s, these pockets are all open at the top—no zippers to safeguard valuables—but feel more secure than the pockets on the Roga’s due to the tighter fabric. There are also no seams separating the pockets from one another on the sides, so there’s less of a length or width limit to what you can store inside. The same internal drawcord design helps customize the fit and supports the weight of your belongings.

I reach for the O-Mazing’s when I’m pushing the envelope on how far I can go without lugging a running pack. The lack of a separate zippered pocket leaves room for a small flask like the HydraPak SoftFlask 250 to slide into the waistband along the low back instead. I find that the compressive fit of the O-Mazing Power Shorts can handle bigger, heavier loads without slipping down or riding up as well.

The O-Mazing Power Shorts come in three different inseams: Mini (2.5-inch), Regular (5-inch) and Long (8-inch)

Inside Kevin Costner's nearly 30-year journey to bring "Horizon" to life: "I couldn't forget it"

By Analisa Novak , Kelsie Hoffman

June 27, 2024 / 9:06 AM EDT / CBS News

Kevin Costner , the Hollywood powerhouse known for his roles in "Yellowstone," "Dances with Wolves" and "The Bodyguard" is back with his most ambitious and personal project yet.

Costner is the writer, director, producer and star of "Horizon: An American Saga," a series of four movies about the expansion and settlement of the American West.

In "Horizon," Costner's character, Haze Ellison, and his love interest, Marigold, played by actor Abbey Lee, are on the run from gunslingers seeking revenge. The series explores themes of violence, love, and betrayal.

The idea of "Horizon" has been decades in the making for Costner.

He first commissioned the story in 1988, even before his success in "Dances with Wolves." Despite initial rejections, Costner never gave up on the passion project and knew he would bring it to life in some way.

"I thought, 'Well, I'll write four more, see how they like those.' No one liked that. You know the knot head that I am but you know I did. I couldn't forget it, I couldn't fall out of love with it. And I just kept pushing it forward," he said.

Authenticity in Westerns

Costner said ever since he was a child he loved Western films but he often found them inauthentic. This changed when he saw a Western where the characters were dressed authentically, the language and music were accurate, and the scenery played a significant role.

"They're hard to make, these big old Westerns. They're hard. Things move slow, but you have to invest in detail. Not just the gunfight; you have to invest in the humanity of what was taking place as people made their way across this country, displacing another whole culture that had been here for thousands of years," said Costner.

In "Horizon," he said he aims to portray the terrible clash of cultures that occurred during the westward expansion.

"Yet amidst all of it there were still people trying to live a noble life, raise their children, there were still the kind of people who were taking advantage of those situations, of no law. And the people who got caught in the middle are the people that were here first," said Costner.

One unexpected aspect of "Horizon" is the significant role that women play in the story. Costner explained that while he didn't initially plan for women to dominate the narrative, it became evident that their perspectives were crucial.

"As you're writing, you can't start scenes without recognizing that women were part of all these decisions and how they had to make their way," he said. "I can't imagine a world without women."

Family affair

Costner and his wife Christine Baumgartner  divorced  after 19 years of marriage in 2023.

In an interview with "CBS Mornings" co-host Gayle King, the former "Yellowstone" star discussed how he is doing one year later.

"That's a crushing moment. It's powerful and it hurt," Costner said.

Costner said his main concern was for his children.

"So, I can't wilt like a daisy. I have to go forward. I have to continue to be who I am and keep a special eye on who they are. Because that's a moment I was hoping they wouldn't experience, but now they have. So what we do is we just deal with it. "

Costner and Baumgartner have two sons and a daughter together. He called it a "dream" to work alongside his son Hayes in his new movie, "Horizon." Despite not pushing his children into acting, Costner felt Hayes was perfect for a role in the film.

"He's a very quiet boy, and he's a namesake of my character," Costner said. "At first, I didn't know that he'd be in it because this started a long time ago. But then I was looking and I was like, I have to make this movie. I have to do it, and I wanted him to be in it. I wanted to see if he'd come with me."

Despite Hayes having no prior experience, Costner was confident in his son's abilities. Recognizing that many children aspire to act, he doesn't give out roles easily. However, he felt that the role in this instance was manageable for Hayes, allowing them to work together closely on the film.

"I thought Hayes could do it. I thought we could be together, and that we're locked together in this," he said. "I was so proud of him, and every day we'd go to work together. It was a dream."

While he is wearing multiple hats in the project, Costner said he refuses to be deterred by challenges that often face those in Hollywood. He said he believes in the importance of not being swayed by trends or others' opinions, saying if he did so, he would be "totally lost." Instead, he focuses on his most important connection.

"I have a relationship with an audience. There is going to be people just like you who go in and don't know anything about it. And when the lights go out and they come up, you're going to take a ride," he said.

"Horizon: An American Saga" will be in theaters on Friday. The film is distributed by Paramount Pictures, a division of Paramount Global.

Analisa Novak is a content producer for CBS News and the Emmy Award-winning "CBS Mornings." Based in Chicago, she specializes in covering live events and exclusive interviews for the show. Analisa is a United States Army veteran and holds a master's degree in strategic communication from Quinnipiac University.

If only it were that simple for Suni Lee.

Lee is in good shape to make the five-person U.S. team for the Paris Olympics. She was fourth at the national championships in early June and has upgraded her routines on uneven bars and floor since then. But a health crisis 15 months ago has upended her life, putting her gymnastics career in doubt and forcing the 21-year-old to confront realities and self-doubts that would challenge people twice her age.

Add to all that the anxiety of competing in front of the hometown crowd, wanting to put on a good show for all the people who have stopped her these last few months to tell her how proud of her they are and how they can't wait for her to compete.

“Whenever I'm talking to my coaches, I get really sad because I'm never going to be the same. I'm not the same Suni, I’m not the same athlete,” Lee said earlier this year. “And they're like, 'Good. You don't want to be. You're doing everything and more right now, and you should be proud of the way that you've been able to come back from everything because you never thought that you would be in this position.’ And I was like, 'You're so right!’”

“But it's just hard mentally because I was in a really good spot last Olympics getting ready,” she said. “So now it's just kind of hard switching that mental aspect of it.”

Lee went to Auburn right after winning gold in Tokyo , wanting to have the college experience and to compete at the NCAA level. But she also wanted to make a run at Paris and announced in November 2022 that she’d leave Auburn at the end of her sophomore season.

Before that season could even end, however, Lee developed a kidney disease that caused her to retain so much fluid there were days she couldn’t even put on her grips. She returned to Minneapolis and began working with doctors at the Mayo Clinic, who discovered she was suffering from a second kidney ailment.

Thus began a nearly yearlong nightmare of tweaking medications and Lee feeling as if she had no control over her body. At one point, she said, she’d gained 40 pounds. There were days she could train and days she could only do certain things.

And then there were days she couldn’t even get out of bed.

“You just have to grow up really fast,” Jess Graba, who has coached Lee for almost her entire career, said Wednesday. “She probably is still trying to process that information because this is lifelong. But also it's kind of made us reevaluate what we would normally do and how we would normally do it."

Lee said a phone call she got Jan. 4, the details she wants to keep private, was a turning point for her.

“I was like , 'Oh my gosh, I’m going back into the gym tomorrow and I'm going to be better than I ever was.’ That was the day I was like, 'Yep, this is what I want. And I'm gonna put my mind into it,’” she said.

Lee said she initially put pressure on herself to immediately be in Olympic shape and would get frustrated that she wasn’t. But Graba told her to relax. Don’t think about Paris, he’d tell her, focus instead on what you want to accomplish in the gym for this day or this week.

By the end of February, Lee had returned to competition . It was an inauspicious start — she did only uneven bars and balance beam at Winter Cup and fell off both — but it let her know she could still do this.

She and Graba have been deliberate in their progression since then, slowly adding skills and events with an eye on being at full strength, or close to it, by trials.

“I want Suni to just compete at her personal best,” said Alicia Sacramone Quinn, who is the strategic lead for the women’s high-performance team and sits on the Olympic team selection committee.

“She has overcome a lot of adversity in her personal life and her health,” Sacramone Quinn added. “If she can just have two great days of competition and be happy and healthy, that’s what I want to see from her.”

Lee admits she suffered from “impostor syndrome” after Tokyo — which wasn’t helped by all the awful people on the Internet who told her she’d won by default.

Simone Biles, the Rio Olympic champion who’d won the previous two world titles, had to withdraw with a case of “the twisties,” which caused her to lose track of where she was in the air and put her health and safety at risk. Had Brazil’s Rebeca Andrade stayed in bounds on floor exercise in Tokyo, she’d have finished ahead of Lee.

“When you see it from other people and that many people are saying the same thing over, that I just suck and all this stuff, it’s very hard mentally,” Lee acknowledged.

But if Lee’s health issues have taught her anything, it’s that medals can’t be the motivation. Nor wanting to answer her critics. This is about her and knowing, even after everything, she can do this.

“That's why she came back to get centered after all the health scare: You do this for personal reasons,” Graba said. “And I really could care less about what she accomplishes, other than I want her to accomplish what she wants to accomplish. I want her to do her best.”

It's not a made-for-TV fairytale. As Lee has learned, however, such things don't exist. Real life is harder. No matter what happens, this weekend or in the next month, she knows she had the courage to see her dream through. Not for anyone else.

For herself.
