Places To Visit in Konkan | A Couple Travelogue On Royal Enfield

konkan trip for 4 days from mumbai

Places to visit in Konkan-  Konkan or the Konkan Coast or Kokan as correctly called in the state of Maharashtra is a rugged section of the western coastline of India. It is a 720 km long coastline with numerous places to visit in Konkan . Consists of the coastal districts of western Indian states of Maharashtra, Goa, and Karnataka. Visiting places in around beach areas will make  me morable Konkan holidays

Konkan Road Trip From Mumbai

I t was a long weekend. With 4 days in hand, the traveler inside me started wondering, to ensure that this long weekend doesn’t end up as numerous other boring ones doing couch surf . I had heard a lot about Konkan Road Trip from Mumbai & beaches though never got a chance to explore beyond Alibaug and Kashid . Doing a quick chat with fellow riders and hearing their experience, got the motivation to go inside the coastal region to get the feel.

And what will be better meant to explore the natural serenity other than on Royal Enfield where one gets a 360-degree view of the surroundings. So the destination was decided – Harihareshwar, a coastal hamlet in Maharashtra, famous for the Lord Harihareshwar Swami temple which is centuries old, with pit stops in between.

Places to visit in Konkan Maharashtra

1) Alibaug & Kashid – Alibag is located about 100 km south of Mumbai, Alibag is a coastal town and municipal council in Raigad district in the Konkan region of Maharashtra. Kashid is best known for clean beach and water sports activities

2) Murud -The sleepy fishing hamlet of Murud at just– 165km from Mumbai – should be on any itinerary of the Konkan Tour which can be covered in 4 hrs from Mumbai. Famous for fresh seafood, Janjira fort, interaction with local over a game of cricket on beach

3) Ganpatipule -Located about 375km from Mumbai in Ratnagiri district, it’s a village that snoozes through much of the year, except during holidays such as Diwali or Ganesh Chaturthi. Ganpatipule derived its name from famous western faced Ganesha temple.Read more on Ganpatipule here

4) Tarkarli & Malvan – The southern most tip of Konkan Maharashtra lies the beautiful beaches of Tarkarli. The beach state Goa is few km from the Malvan town .A must visit for white sand, snorkeling and Scuba Dive. A must-do in Konkan Tour list

Konkan Tour on Bullet

The roads of Mumbai is always empty in the morning and so I was able to fire the engine on higher speeds of 90 kph . Soon in an hour I was outside Panvel . Halted there for snacks. The sky was clear, the breeze was cool which set the perfect mood for getting out from the hustle bustle of city and go as near to nature as possible.

Started at 8 am from Panvel and by 10 am were in Kashid for snacks and tea . Throughout till Alibaug the road was good . The stretch between Alibaug and Kashid is a nightmare , though on the bull you won’t feel that pinch . I was able to maintain a minimum speed of 50 kph throughout the bad stretch. It was a sunny day and we started feeling dehydrated , so we inquired about good places to stay in Kashid. However after a sumptuous breakfast we decided to reach the planned destination of Murud Janjira .

Konkan Tour Ghat Road

Konkan Tour Ghat Road

The road between Kashid and Murud Janjira is heaven as you pass by near the sea. On the r ight hand side you will see endless water and on left hand side the lush greenery of nature will catch the attention of your eyes. We felt like going endless on that road with the road never end. It was a mesmerizing scene which cannot be explained in words , may be the photo can do a bit of justice.

Murud Janjira

Murud Janjira Fort

Murud Janjira Fort

Finally we reached Murud Janjira at 11:20 am. Murud is a small fishing town near Murud beach. The main road of Murud runs parallel to the sea. The s ea water is as close as 20 meters during the day time and as far as 100 meters in the evening . The beach has very fine black sand which gives the mirage of black diamonds. The beach is almost a kilometer and half long and free from garbage. There are couple of resorts with their rear end opening on the beach itself. Though we were not fortunate enough to get a place in those resorts. Murud has lots of home stay, hotels to stay . Luckily we got a stay in nearby home stay which was pristine.

Murud is a laid back town so one can spend quite a long time on its beach and can have bath there.Apart from that , following activity can be enjoyed there :

Things to do at Murud Janjira:

  • Banana boat ride on Murud beach
  • Baggi ride on Murud beach
  • Visit the small fort on the hill
  • Visit the main Murud fort which is 4 km from the town in the middle of the sea . Ou can get regular ferry services to visit the fort. Safe for family and kids . You can find lots of travelers in Murud.
  • Enjoy the f amous coastal Chicken and Sea food delicacies in Patil hotel . Also there is one small hotel on the beach which provide yummy fish thali and chicken thali. The food for 2 people will cost around Rs 400-500. I bet you will not be able to eat after that.

A Konkan Coast Itinerary | Mumbai to Harihareshwar

Harihareshwar Beach

A Mumbai Harihareshwar road trip itinerary

One is spoilt for choice during the monsoons in Maharashtra. The Sahyadris are resplendent with lush neon foliage and thick mist. The roads are freshly washed. The lakes are brimming over. Everyone and everything appears joyous and full of promise. It is as if life is renewed. There is no better way to enjoy this than a road trip, but rest assured, everyone else has had the same idea. You’ll be lucky to find any available hotel rooms at all during the weekends in the monsoon.

We chose Harihareshwar to do a Konkan Coast drive, because, well… a room was available at the MTDC resort. All in all, it turned out to be a memorable trip, because we stumbled upon a great route on our way back. Much like the Sagari Mahamarg MSH4 route we did earlier. We will also go via part of MSH4 in this route.

Mumbai to Harihareshwar: The normal route

From Mumbai to Harihareshwar, we used the direct and faster route—NH66—which takes about 5 hours. We did the coastal route on our way back to Mumbai from Harihareshwar. Of course, you can do it in reverse, but I prefer doing the longer, more arduous route on the way back home. Moreover, in terms of logistics and timings, it worked out perfectly. (Check-out time + drive time + ferry time = back home time). I’ll explain as we go along.

Harihareshwar: Things to do

konkan trip for 4 days from mumbai

Our stay at MTDC was pleasant. It’s an expansive property, as most MTDC hotels are, with very cosy rooms and a great sea view. The food was better too, as was the mobile signal strength. All in all, a good stay.

Harihareshwar to Mumbai: The Konkan Coast route

As I said, we did the Konkan Coast drive on our way back from Harihareshwar to Mumbai. It was plenty of fun! We drove by the sea for almost all of the route and crossed a lot many villages and farms with local people going about their business. The traffic on the road was merely packs of stay dogs, herds of goats, cows, buffaloes, chickens, and one time, even a snake! We stopped to explore some random ruins and temples along the way. Every now and then we stopped for hot and spicy vada pavs and chai. It was pure bliss!

Largely, we drove past the following beaches on our Harihareshwar to Mumbai coastal road trip

Kondvil Beach

Kondvil was an isolated beach with only a nariyalwala plying his wares. The beach is black sand and silty, so not so much fun, but you can while away a few minutes, savouring the waves, and the general lack of civilization. Nearby is Shrivardhan Beach which is more popular but involves a slight detour.

konkan trip for 4 days from mumbai

Diveagar Beach

Another lovely, secluded beach on the way, with white sand, some watersports, and the occasional viewing of starfish and crabs. The nearby Sarve waterfall point usually has a waterfall during the monsoons, but it hadn’t been raining the week we went and so, we didn’t see anything.

Mumbai Harihareshwar road trip driving along

Dighi-Agaradanda Ferry

I find travelling in local ferries a lot of fun. We made it just in time for the 1 PM ferry which left Dighi (the next was at 2:30 PM and would’ve majorly upset our plans) and crossed the river in less than 30 min to reach the other end (Agardanda jetty). Agardanda is a village in the Murud Janjira Taluka, located 9 km south of Murud.

The advantage of the ferry is not only that it saves time and driving effort, but also it directly connects to NH -17. Not to mention, one can savour the cool sea breeze and the car gets a break too.

Harihareshwar to Mumbai road trip stops

More on the ferry .

Murud-Janjira

Murud Janjira Fort

The Murud Janjira Fort is situated on an oval-shaped rock off the Arabian Sea coast near the port city of Murud. It is an impressive fort with several of its rooms, sculptures, and cannons intact. It is accessible by sailboats from Rajapuri jetty but was shut when we visited (Covid-19 restrictions, of course).

Nagaon Beach

The Nagaon beach is located 9 km from Alibaug and is the cleanest of the lot. The beach is 3 km long and there are plenty of cosy homestays around if you have an impulse to experience local life.

One can also visit Kashid (famous for bird watching) and Kihim beaches on the way to Alibaug.

Alibaug, the headquarter of the Raigad district, where all the beaches we drove past are located, is also a city where the second homes of several affluent Mumbai residents are located. Many of them are rented out to tourists. Alibaug is home to a Radisson which is a popular Mumbai offsite destination. Places to check out in Alibaug are the Alibaug Beach, the Varsoli Beach and, just offshore, the 17th-century Kolaba Fort.

We took the Ro-Pax Ferry back from Mandva Jetty in Alibaug to Mumbai. Despite this being Covid times, the ferry was FULL. Food and drinks (including alcohol) are served on board. There is an airconditioned area and open-air seating as well. Overall, despite the crowd, it was a fun breezy journey through 19km of sea. The sailing time is 1 hour, and the journey shaves off about an hour of your drive from Alibaug to Mumbai, although, it isn’t much cheaper. Cancellations happen, so even if bookings show full online for a particular slot, keep on checking for openings. Report at least 15 minutes before departure time.

Mahesh's 4 days trip to Goa

It was going good but there lack of communication between agent and cab vendor where they are not agreeing to visit places which were travelling agent share with us. However later when I complaint about it then they took almost entire for discussion and then agree around 3 PM and that time it was too late to cover places and return back by 6 PM. They spoiled few of the places and in other words, pls advise customer whatever places are practically possible and when you agreed with customer then you should deliver it, otherwise customer hardly get 2-3 days time to visit some places and at that time you guys spoil one day due to your internal dispute then think about customer how much he will lost with these things. Although there was some hiccups but still enjoyed the Goan Beautiful beaches and other places specially cruise time was fantastic.

Coastal Maharashtra Road Trip: Mumbai To Goa Itinerary Via Konkan

I’ve done Coastal Maharastra Road Trip, otherwise known as Konkan Road Trip, twice: once in 2018, and once in 2020. The 2018 trip was done in a car with friends and the 2020 trip was done on a motorcycle, solo. Though I followed the same route, the itinerary was different. Both journeys took 4 days to complete.

This blog on Coastal Maharastra Road Trip Itinerary has been, therefore, written on the basis of the learning from both trips, with updated road conditions as of 2020.

Also, read these Motivational Travel Quotes I’ve handpicked for you.

Now, let’s get started with the topic at hand…

Mumbai to Goa Coastal Maharashtra Trip

konkan trip for 4 days from mumbai

So far I believed that India has everything to offer but a scenic coastal ride, and to get the best of a road trip in India your options are limited to the Himalayas, with Spiti Valley and Leh Ladakh topping the list.

To make it even more ironic, every time someone asked me about my favourite coastal route in the world the first thing that came to my mind was the Great Indian Ocean Drive in Western Australia , or someplace in Italy. Though I am certainly not comparing the coastal roads of Australia or Italy with Maharashtra’s, the fact that I never explored my own backyard that I didn’t know what beauty it had to offer.

And then, Konkan Road Trip happened, and I realised that it’s not just one of the best road trips in Maharashtra, as often claimed, but one of the best in the world.

Note: Mumbai to Goa Coastal Maharastra and Konkan Road Trips are both the same. The coastal region of Maharashtra is otherwise known as the Konkan region, hence the same thing. Now let’s start with the route map…

Mumbai to Goa Coastal Maharashtra Route Map

Before you go on the route and start Google navigating, let me tell you that Google will keep navigating you from the main Mumbai to the Goa highway route. But since we are talking about the Mumbai to Goa coastal route, you will have to stick to the coast. Just have your wits about it and stay as close to the coast as you can.

For your reference, here is Mumbai to Goa Coastal Route by car. The same route is accessible by bikes too…

mumbai to goa coastal route by car

For those who love road trips and beaches, the coastal Konkan region, in Maharashtra is certainly a no-miss.

From roads running parallel to beaches to ferry crossings to an ever-changing landscape — that, at every 50 km, shift from high cliffs to beach-side drives to isolated hilltops barren with red laterite soil — the coastal Maharashtra road trip has all highlights.

For an intrepid, there is more to explore on this route than just the scenic beauty. This including a 16th-century Jaigad Fort, a 17th-century Ganesh Idol at Ganpati Pule, adventure water sports at Tarkarli, many flourishing Konkan villages, strange regional delicacies, and much more.

Coastal Maharashtra Road Trip: More About Journey Than Destinations

Though the entire 600km stretch between Mumbai and Goa coastal route is a highlight, the three highlighted places that deserve a little more time include Harihareshwar, Ganpati Pule and Tarkarli (or Malvan).

For the most part of the trip, you will be driving on the state highway 4 (or SH4) which, in reality, is more like a narrow trail than a highway, but the natural beauty and the experiences it has to offer will make it up to you.

I mean imagine it this way… if you’re doing Mumbai to Goa taking NH 48 you can do the journey in about 12 hours. But if you’re doing the Konkan road trip, it takes at least three days (even if you’re driving throughout the day, every day). There must be something great and offbeat about it!

SH4 is known as the coastal route due to its proximity to the ocean. On several occasions (six times in total) it ends up in the ocean or a massive lagoon, forcing you to take a ferry to get to the other side.

konkan road trip

From moment to moment, the Konkan road trip also offers dramatic backdrops of the blue Arabian sea from atop a steep cliff, before taking you downhill for a close hug with the coast. As the journey nears Goa, the highway starts going inland more frequently, over surprisingly isolated and barren hills, with pleasant villages start showing periodically for a change.

Though for most the part, the SH4 remains a poor country road, at times, it turns into a well-marked and well-sealed highway too. Yet, doing more than 200km a day is quite a challenge and makes it impossible since the idea is to cherish a good road trip experience and grab the scenic beauty en route.

konkan road trip by bus

Tip: Since National Highway 48 is a better alternative to the coastal State Highway 4, Google will keep rerouting you to 48. So just have your wits about going parallel to NH48 and sticking closer to the coast. Wherever there’s a diversion, take the one taking you closer to the coast and that’s the scenic route. At times you may have to deviate and go a little inland too, but starting from Mumbai to all the way to Goa, there are a few different (though for the most part the SH4 only) highways running right next to the coast.

The Coastal Maharashtra route is off the tourist trail. Most tourists doing Mumbai-Goa or Pune-Goa take the better version of the roads and follow NH 48.

Coastal Maharashtra Or Konkan Road Trip Itinerary

  • Mumbai to Harihareshwar (1 ferry crossing)
  • Hariharshwar to Ganpati Pule (4 ferry crossings)
  • Ganpati Pule to Tarkarli (1 ferry crossing)
  • Tarkarli to Goa (no ferry crossings)

konkan bike road trip

Day 3 of the journey, i.e from Ganpati Pule to Tarkarli, remains the highlight of the journey with the most spectacular stretch of the whole trip starting right after Ganpati Pule. As you leave Ganpati Pule, the road climbs around a cliff with Aare Ware beach appearing at a distance below, on the right, providing gorgeous views. A perfectly carved road further compliments the experience.

From Ganpati Pule to all the way to Ratnagiri (a 25km stretch) you get periodic glimpses of the Arabic Sea shimmering on your right as the roads wind uphill and downhill regularly.

konkan coastal road trip

The three ferry crossings on Day 2 (at Bagmandala jetty, at Dhabol and at Tawsal) were also quite an experience and offered great photo ops.

konkan road trip itinerary

Tip : Bagmandala ferry (to Bankot) departs every hour and starts a 6 in the morning. The ferry from Dhabol to Dopave departs every 45 minutes, starting at 6.30 a.m. The last one leaves at 10 p.m. From Tavsal to Jaigad too the ferry runs approximately every 45 minutes, but this one’s the longest of all rides (around 20 mins) with the last ferry, again, leaving at 10 in the night. Cars, motorbikes, and even trucks can be transported on all three ferries.

The entire stretch has more than five ferry crossings all operating during the daytime only. Visit CarFerry.in to check the time schedule for each ferry point and save yourself from some needless waiting.

Coastal Maharashtra or Konkan Road Trip Highlights

Though there’s enough to see and do on the way, and one can easily spend a week slowly driving and still not get bored with the journey, for those doing it in the minimum time, yet enjoying a good share of stop-overs, here are my six suggested stops en route Mumbai-Goa following the coastal Maharashtra of State Highway 4:

Harihareshwar Beach

The highlight of the pilgrimage town of Harihareshwar, the Harihareshwar beach is ideal for those looking for a clean and soothing beach where one can spend some unhurrying time and forget their bustling life in the cities.

coastal maharashtra

The beach assures a noise-free ambience with no watersports and no loud tourists around, as most people visiting Harihareshwar come here for paying tribute to Lord Harihareshwar. There’s moreover only one shack available throughout its half a kilometre expanse.

mumbai to goa coastal Maharashtra

Anjanvel Village

One of the many villages en route, Anjanvel village offers an ideal rural escape. During our stop at Anjarle and a few hours of strolling and eating in the town, I found people in Anjanvel being very hospitable, with most of them eager to share smiles and engage in a happy conversation with tourists.

Anjanvel village

A noticeable highlight was the local Malvan food we had in the town, that was more a food tour experience.

malvan food

Harnai Fish Market

Though you’re going to find quite a few fish markets on State Highway 4, Harnai Fish Market just happens to be one of the largest and busiest. The eclectic atmosphere at Harnai Beach with women clad in bright sarees screaming and yelling for their best prices and the men going catching and bringing fishes from the ocean to the land is quite a sight. It’s amazing to see how as soon as fresh fish hit the beach, the action starts.

konkan fishing village

Aare Ware Beach Road

A 10 km stretch of a road the Aare Ware Beach road — that starts right from Ganpati Pule beach to the next T-point junction — is the most beautiful highlight of the entire Coastal Maharashtra route. With its many twists and turns, the road frequently goes uphill and downhill, with sometimes offering a distant view of the mighty blue ocean from up a cliff, and sometimes, a closer shrug.

konkan road trip

Devgad Fort & Ananvadi Fishing Village

If deserted forts and dramatic sunsets overlooking an infinite ocean is your thing then you’re going to fall in love with coastal Maharashtra. Starting Mumbai to all the way to Goa, we came across a few dozens abandoned forts, but the one we stopped by for capturing the sunset was the fort of Devgad and I can’t recommend it more.

devgad fort konkan

The adjoining fishing village of Ananwadi was moreover a great place to capture some village life.

coastal maharashtra villages

Tarkarli Village

Out of all the villages we explored, I particularly loved the setting of Tarkarli village.

tarkari village konkan

Though the highlight in Tarkarli is the adventure water sport (including Scuba diving, Jet Ski, Banana Boat Ride, and Parasailing, among others) for a photo buff, Tarkarli had much to offer. Just walk across the many intermingled bylanes and capture the essence of rural coastal Maharashtra.

Hey, I am so glad to read your thoughts because I really enjoyed reading this. The way you explain your travel experience is truly awesome.

Awesome info.. this is exactly the kind of info i was looking for, for my sept monsoon roadtrip from Ahmedabad to Goa. Most blogs and videos show NH66 or Mumbai – Pune – Belgaum route which makes you reach the destination faster but doesnt let you enjoy the journey as much as SH4 would.

How are the road conditions on SH4 during monsoon? Good enough for driving by car without getting into trouble? Any idea / tips?

This sounds so idyllic, Dev! Good to hear that you are seeking out the treasures in your backyard.

Cheers Mohana. I am always seeking out for more treasures in India 🙂
