Helen stuhr-rommereim, journey from st. petersburg to moscow, by alexander radishchev, translated by andrew kahn and irina reyfman, reviewed by helen stuhr-rommereim.

While Alexander Radishchev’s 1790 Journey from St. Petersburg to Moscow is ostensibly traveler’s notes from the 450-or-so miles between the two resplendent centers of the late eighteenth-century Russian Empire, it is not a compilation of ethnographic observations. Instead, readers travel through a highly crafted reflection on the Enlightenment ideals of equality, justice, and progress. The most famous work by a career civil servant who also wrote poetry, nonfiction, and philosophy, the sui generis Journey collages together monologues from fellow travelers, found texts describing utopian social reform, and surreal dream visions to indict Russian society under the rule of Catherine the Great—especially for its reliance on the labor of enserfed peasants.

The brazen text earned its author a death sentence, later commuted to exile for life, though Radishchev may not have expected such a harsh response. Since taking the throne in 1762, Catherine had modeled herself as the ideal enlightened autocrat. The actual overthrow of the French monarchy cooled her progressive fervor, however, and Radishchev’s timing was unfortunate. His Journey was censored out of print for the duration of the nineteenth century, but after the Bolshevik revolution, its author was sanctified as Russia’s first anti-monarchist martyr.

Despite the book’s historical importance, it is virtually unknown outside of Russian studies. One reason is that it is notoriously difficult to read in Russian, written in sometimes intentionally archaic language with complex syntax and page-long sentences. The previous English translation, published in 1958, replicates all of this awkwardness and none of its style. In this new translation by Irina Reyfman and Andrew Kahn, Radishchev’s circuitous locutions are presented, for the first time, in idiosyncratic but eminently readable English. Recognizing the opacity of Radishchev’s prose as a purposeful stylistic choice, as Reyfman and Kahn do in their excellent introduction, not only makes the text newly accessible to a wide readership; it is also crucial to understanding its meaning.

Journey begins with a revelation: “I felt within myself strength enough to resist error; and—unspeakable joy!—I sensed that everyone has the ability to participate in doing good for his equal.” This is both a starting and ending point: the narrative that follows seeks to produce in its reader the same revelation, but it will take some work on the reader’s part. Throughout Journey, when physical beauty, social harmony, and material finery appear, they are almost always revealed as illusory. These trappings obscure the core equality of all people, and hence the moral blight of serfdom. Readers must come to feel this moral outrage viscerally within themselves—that every pleasure and privilege enjoyed by the noble class is, in essence, drinking “peasants’ tears”—rather than simply knowing it with their reason. Radishchev wants his reader to taste the salt.

The narrator’s journey takes place as much within his psyche as it does in physical space. In an early chapter, the narrator dreams he is a great ruler, surrounded by finery and fawning subjects. An old woman comes to see him; she is the “Straight Seer and Eye Doctor.” She cures his “cataracts” and transforms his perception. The King realizes he is covered in literal rot: “On my fingers I could see the remains of a human brain, my feet stood in mire. Those standing around me looked even more vile. Their entire innards looked black and consumed by the dull flame of insatiability.” Radishchev’s travelogue is meant to serve as a truth serum of the kind served up by the Straight Seer. Its readers will struggle to understand it, but that is precisely the point: thanks to the struggle, the truth will be felt, rather than mistaken for another illusory surface. Upon waking, the narrator has a message for the “rulers of the world”: “if in reading my dream you should smile sarcastically or furrow your brow, know this: the female wanderer I saw has flown away far from you and shuns your palace.” One begins to imagine the Empress’s enraged response.

Although formally unique, Journey belongs squarely to the history of European Enlightenment thought; Laurence Sterne is one influence, as are the philosophical writings of Adam Smith, David Hume, and Jean-Jacques Rousseau. The new translation will be an important addition to courses on Russian literature and history and the European Enlightenment. But Radishchev’s Journey is also worth reading for anyone seeking to square a belief in the goodness of humanity with the reality of structural injustice that is as much the basis of contemporary American society, as it was of Imperial Russian society in 1790. Reyfman and Kahn have preserved the strange, stilted style of Journey from St. Petersburg to Moscow while also capturing the searing moral outrage that motivated its writing. One gets the sense that, whether or not Radishchev knew that he would invoke his ruler’s wrath, he did not much care: what he wrote, he had to write.

Ukraine-Russia war: Latest updates

All the developments and analysis on the war in Ukraine from our specialists and live team.

Monday 10 June 2024 15:09, UK

Please use Chrome browser for a more accessible video player

 • Big picture: Everything you need to know about the war right now
 • Your questions answered: Are there any signs of an underground resistance in Russia?

Welcome back to our live coverage of the war in Ukraine.

We're starting the week by taking a few steps back and giving an overview of where the conflict is at.

Putin warns Russia could provide long-range weapons to attack West

Last week started with the St Petersburg International Economic Forum, at which Vladimir Putin was joined by the leaders of Russia's closest allies.

During a session with international journalists, the Russian president warned he could provide long-range weapons to attack the West.

He said the recent actions by the West would further undermine international security and could lead to "very serious problems".

"That would mark their direct involvement in the war against the Russian Federation, and we reserve the right to act the same way," he added.

His warning came after Joe Biden partially lifted restrictions on how Ukraine can use military supplies provided by the US, meaning they could be used to strike inside Russia.

Mr Putin also reaffirmed Russia's position on nuclear weapons, saying the conditions for using them were clearly spelled out in Moscow's security doctrine.

"If somebody's actions threaten our sovereignty and territorial integrity, we consider it possible to use all means at our disposal," he said.

Ukraine has right to strike 'legitimate targets in Russia', NATO chief says

It also seems Ukraine might be given the go-ahead to strike Russia, with the NATO secretary general saying it has the right to attack legitimate military targets.

"Ukraine has the right to self defence," Jens Stoltenberg said during a news conference with Ulf Kristersson, the Swedish prime minister, at a military base near Stockholm.

"The right to self defence also includes the right to hit legitimate, military targets on the territory of the attacking party, the aggressor - in this case Russia."

His comments came after Maria Zakharova, a spokeswoman for the Russian foreign ministry, claimed that HIMARS rockets have been used since then on civilian targets.

Ukrainian warplane fires weapon at target inside Russia for first time

Following the NATO chief's comments, a military source told Sky News a Ukrainian warplane has for the first time fired a weapon that struck a target inside Russia.

The source said a "Russian command node" was hit on Sunday in the area of Belgorod, a western Russian region near the Ukraine border which has come under frequent attack.

It was not immediately clear what type of munition was used in the attack, including whether or not it had been a Western weapon.

The United States and France recently said the Ukrainian armed forces were permitted to use their arms to strike military targets inside Russia - from where Russian forces are launching attacks against Ukraine.

You can read that full story here ...

Latest 'battlefield situation'

A detailed map showing the latest situation on the ground in Ukraine has been published by the UK defence ministry.

The area in light pink is territory taken by Russia since it invaded in February 2022.

Those areas in a darker shade of pink show territory - including Crimea - seized by Russia since 2014.

White, blue and red circles represent the grouping of forces while the red arrows show likely Russian attacks.

Despite the recent heavy bombardment of Kharkiv, Ukraine's second city, it is not in the seized sections.

However, a couple of small areas north of Kharkiv, on the Russian border, are shaded light pink.

Zelenskyy attends talks in Qatar

In what could be seen as a step towards progress, Volodymyr Zelenskyy arrived in Qatar for talks with the state's emir, Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani.

The Ukrainian president discussed Qatar's participation in a process of returning Ukrainian children abducted by Russia, as well as bilateral economic and security issues.

In March, Ukraine and Russia exchanged six children via Qatari mediation.

Mr Zelenskyy also made a surprise trip to the Philippines to thank the country for agreeing to participate in the upcoming peace summit being held in Switzerland.

Thank you for reading.

We will be back soon with more updates from the war in Ukraine.

Vladimir Putin has said he does not see the conditions for the use of nuclear weapons as set out in Russia's nuclear doctrine - but added he could not rule out a change to the doctrine.

"We have a nuclear doctrine which states that the use of nuclear arms is possible in an exceptional case, when the sovereignty and territorial integrity of our country is threatened," he told the St Petersburg International Economic Forum.

"But the doctrine can be changed.

"The same applies to nuclear tests. We will carry out tests if needed, but so far there is no such need."

Russia could send weapons to adversaries of the West, Vladimir Putin has warned for a second time.

The Russian president repeated the warning from earlier this week during the St Petersburg Economic Forum.

He did not say what countries or entities he was referring to, and he stressed that Moscow is not doing it currently.

"If they supply (weapons) to the combat zone and call for using these weapons against our territory, why don't we have the right to do the same?" he told the crowds.

"But I'm not ready to say that we will be doing it tomorrow, either."

On Wednesday, Putin told international journalists that Russia could provide long-range weapons to others to strike Western targets in response to NATO allies allowing Ukraine to use their arms to attack Russian territory.

He also reaffirmed Moscow's readiness to use nuclear weapons if it sees a threat to its sovereignty.

Joe Biden has apologised to Volodymyr Zelenskyy for the recent delay in approving new US aid for Ukraine.

Last month, following months of political disagreements, the Senate passed $95bn (£76.2bn) in war aid to Ukraine, Israel and Taiwan .

"I apologise for those weeks of not knowing," the US president said.

"Some of our very conservative members [of Congress] were holding it up.

"But we got it done, finally. We're still in - completely, totally."

The Ukrainian president thanked his counterpart for American assistance.

"It's very important that you stay with us," he said.

"It's very important that in this unity, the United States of America, all American people stay with Ukraine, like it was during World War Two - how the United States helped to save human lives, to save Europe."

The two men were speaking in Paris, the day after D-Day commemorations in Normandy.

Russia needs to boost its use of non-Western currencies, Vladimir Putin said as he addressed the St Petersburg International Economic Forum.

He also said his country needs to reduce imports while calling for a major expansion of its domestic financial markets.

Trade with Asia is soaring, he told delegates, adding that almost two fifths of Russian external trade is now in roubles.

The share conducted in US dollars, euros and other Western currencies has declined.

Russia will try to boost the share of settlements conducted in the currencies of BRICS countries - which include Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa, Mr Putin said.

"Last year, the share of payments for Russian exports in the so–called 'toxic' currencies of unfriendly states halved, while the share of the rouble in export and import transactions is growing - it is approaching 40% today," the president said.

Russia has referred to nations that imposed sanctions on it as "unfriendly".

The session begins with an address by the Russian president.

Vladimir Putin says there is a race among world powers to establish sovereignty.

He speaks of the need for countries to both establish partnerships and also to look internally to tackle challenges presented by the current global economic landscape.

Despite all the "obstacles and illegitimate sanctions", Russia remains one of the world's economic leaders, he says.

He adds that "friendly countries" - those that have not joined sanctions against Moscow - account for three quarters of Russia's mutual trade turnover, and praises them for that.

Countries including India and China have strengthened economic ties since Mr Putin launched his war in Ukraine.

Vladimir Putin has taken to the stage in St Petersburg to address the International Economic Forum there.

He's joined by Zimbabwean President Emmerson Mnangagwais and Bolivian President Luis Alberto Arce Catacora.

Chairing the session is Sergey Karaganov - a Russian political scientist.

We'll bring you any key lines here in this live blog.

A T-shirt is on sale at the St Petersburg International Economic Forum printed with a phrase attributed to Vladimir Putin, Sky News has discovered.

"If a fight is inevitable, throw the first punch," it says.

The Russian president reportedly said it in 2015.

He apparently explained that it was something he had learned while growing up on the streets of Leningrad - a former name of St Petersburg.

The Russian defence ministry has accused Ukraine of injuring 20 people, including children, in a missile attack on the Russian-controlled eastern Ukrainian city of Luhansk, using US-supplied ATACMS missiles.

Four of five missiles were shot down by air defence systems, the ministry said in a statement.

However, one of the missiles damaged two residential apartment blocks, it added, claiming it was deliberate.

Sky News is unable to verify the allegations.

There has been no immediate comment from Ukraine.

Life in Russian Village: Our Journey to the Rural Russia

journey homes village east

What is the daily life in the rural Russia? How the traditional Russian village still looks like? This is a very popular questions among the foreign travelers. This August we visited a small Russian village located in the middle on nowhere that is just 250 km from Moscow.

Read our story it tells how to travel only 200 km from moscow and find the rural russia , the road was very long… about 4 hours of driving the highway with numerous cars and tracks. russia is famous worldwide by its awful roads, so tourists coming to moscow are always surprised by amazing highways and multi-level interchanges. after 2 hours of fast-driving, we finally turned from to the small and lonesome asphalt road. , there were almost no cars, just trees, trees, and trees. such roads go on for thousands of miles in russia. most of the time it seems that no one lives in this country only rare buses reminded us about remote russian villages that are invisible from the road..

Check out our YouTube Channel

Finally, we turned from this long and lonesome road to the even smaller one that was full of potholes and had no cars at all. after 200 km of highways... we found the real russia , we crossed the river and drive several kilometers more when we suddenly reached the village... i always wonder why people settled in such places a hundred years ago have they dreamed of building another thriving city anyway, it seems that mother nature has won, slowly vanquishing the tiny village and futile efforts of its dwellers..

On the bank of the Russian Village

It was small but nice with a several large wooden houses located in the distance from each other. People in the villages respect their own private space. Fortunately, there’s so much space in Russia that it’s not difficult to have it.

Moreover, it's definitely difficult to take care of it the grass feels great in the summer growing so fast that you spend several days a month just cutting it off. trees scatter their branches on miles away, so you need to cut them and burn as well. birches need only several years to turn the abandoned field into the forests., our friend’s parents live in this village for many years. once they were typical city dwellers with good educations and jobs. then they moved to rural russia just to have their own house, livestock, and garden. they wanted to live closer to nature. to be closer to real life..

Wooden House in Russian Village

When you pass their nice wooden fence, you get inside the flourishing little garden. Actually, it’s not little! But branches of trees, a pops of grasses and flowers, and vegetable patches leave only a few space for a human being. Mother Nature made her way through the fence.

Wooden House in traditional Village

There were also animals everywhere! Joyful dogs barked at the duck that was standing on the terrace looking at the kitten that was hiding in the corner because of the dogs and watching his relaxed mother cat drinking the milk. A harmony as it is!

 • We plan to make a big winter Tour from Moscow to Baikal for 1-2 months by car in 2020-2021 .

BLOG: Journey to Chukhloma
We got to the inner yard and found the space with a fresh-cut grass, some wooden sheds and greenhouses. Small piece of earth where its chaotic nature was slightly tamed!

This couple of seniors lived in subsistence farming with only few things bought in the supermarket that was far away from the village. even in the tver' region it's possible to grow a lot of potatoes (our second bread), tomatoes, cucumbers, carrots, beats, and apples to cook the traditional food with your own product during the whole winter..

Typical Russian Garden

Then we passed another fence to stumble onto a flock of sheeps. We were about to apologize for such a sudden invasion, when sheeps decided that it’s better to leave and run behind the shed.

Actually, i couldn’t stand and did my best to force them into a corner to make nice photos. it was not easy at all they were fast and well-organized finally, they get tired of me running to and from and hide in the darkness of the shed..

Livestock in the rural Russia

We went outside and have a walk around the village. Our children were happy to spend time there. Fields, a lot of flowers, animals… and freedom! Till now, a lot of people send their children “to grandma to the village” for the summer holidays. What an amazing place to learn the world!

Babies in the village

Finally, we got to the house of a horse family… It was REALLY a house where they live. Moreover, they choose it by themselves and were totally free to move into another house.

These were horses of our friends. the father’s name was earl. it was incredibly strong and big it was ready to defend his wife and small. we were a little bit frightened even despite it was hobbled not to run away. petr, his owner, fed them with bread..

Horses in the rural Russia

In the evening, we returned to the wooden house of our friends to have a dinner. Should I describe how tasty it was?! Fresh tomatoes, cucumbers and traditional bortsch from local vegetables… Mmm, it seems that I started to understand why people move to villages!

Fresh vegatables: Life in the Russian Village

Do you want to travel the small towns in the Russian countryside?

Golden Ring of Russia for 4-7 days

During first days we will visit all must-see place in Moscow. Whether you're looking to visit medieval monasteries, historic houses, stunning cathedrals, soviet monumental skyscrapers, wonderful parks and more, there are plenty of landmark destinations to visit when you're in Moscow.

The next 2-3 days we will see life in the typical Russian provinces visiting small towns of the famous Golden ring of Russia. It is a ring of ancient towns, which also played a significant role in the formation of the Russian Orthodox Church. They still preserve the memory of the most important and significant events in Russian history.

The towns are one of the best places to visit in Russia! They have been called "open-air museums" and feature unique monuments of Russian architecture of the 12th–18th centuries, including kremlins, monasteries, cathedrals, and churches. You will also see a lot of rural Russia with its old wooden houses and traditional villages.

From Moscow to St. Petersburg for 5 days

There is a great difference between Moscow, St. Petersburg, and all other Russia... The concept of this tour is to show you the real Russia with numerous small towns, pristine nature, abandoned churches and the life of people.

This tour does not include Golden Ring towns! Instead, you will see Staritsa town and Novgorod the Great, beautiful places to visit in Russia!

We will also visit an elderly couple living in a traditional Russia village. We will help them with their daily work - plowing the land (not by tractors, but by horses), caring for the livestock and cooking food in a traditional Russian oven… And surely we will taste some real fresh milk and eggs while they will be telling us about their common life, their habits, and the households.

The itinerary is perfect for those who are going to St. Petersburg. It takes only 4 hours to get there from Novgorod by a cheap local train.

Two homes destroyed in jalbun village, east of jenin, by israeli forces amid daily violations.

Palestinian residents in the village of Jalbun, east of Jenin in the occupied West Bank, look on as Israeli forces demolish two homes. [Shatha Hanaysha/TNA]

On Monday, Israeli forces demolished two houses in the village of Jalbun, east of Jenin , under the pretext that they were constructed without a permit from the Israeli authorities. The Israeli army didn't give sufficient time for the homeowners to take their belongings from their houses before the start of the demolition process.

The owner of one of the houses, Maleka Abu Rob, said to The New Arab , "This is me and my husband Rashid's home. We have lived here since we got married 40 years ago. My husband built the house in 1982 before the settlements existed and even before the Israeli segregation wall was built. At that time, there was no electricity, no water, and not even a road leading to our house."

"I am surprised that the occupation demolished the house without any prior warning. They didn't give us time to empty its contents. When we received the demolition order last year, we filed a case in the Israeli courts to protest the decision, but it was rejected. They said our house was built in a closed military area, even though our house is far from the wall and the [Israeli] settlement," Maleka continued.

She tells us that what happened this morning was that Israeli bulldozers, accompanied by military vehicles, passed in front of her house and headed to the other house, starting its demolition. At that time, Maleka thought the demolition was for the other house, but when they finished destroying the first house, they returned to her house. She was shocked to find out they were going to start demolishing it too.

"They didn't even tell me the demolition would take place today, so I couldn't remove the belongings from the house. I managed to take out some items, but when I placed them next to the house, all the demolition debris fell on them," she remarked.

The head of the village council, Ibrahim Abu Rob, said that the Israeli occupation forces demolished two houses. One of the houses was inhabited by 7 people and had an area of 300 square meters, while the second house was inhabited by 6 people and consisted of two floors, each with an area of 150 square meters.

According to Abu Rob, the Israeli occupation authorities had previously issued demolition orders for four houses on the outskirts of Jalbun village, in addition to two other houses in the centre of the village.

One of the village residents said, "Our village has been under siege since October 7th. We are subjected to oppression, humiliation, and persecution. Where is the Palestinian Authority in all that is happening to us? The residents of our village are primarily agricultural, and they make their living from farming. Our homes and agricultural facilities are being demolished, and we don't see any action from the Palestinian Authority".

"Here is my cousin's house being demolished, yet I don't see any response from the PA, not even to provide them with a tent. Where will the family go today? This land is ours, and the land on which the settlement is built belongs to my grandfather, my uncle, and our relatives. My grandfather, who is older than the state of the occupation." He said.

These violations are not the first for the village of Jalbun. Since 7 October, the village has been subjected to daily repeated raids by the Israeli forces. Some houses have been turned into military points by the Israeli army, preventing the Palestinian owners from accessing their homes for days.

The locals say that the Israeli occupation has turned the village of Jalbun into a large open-air prison by setting up checkpoints at various entrances, hindering the movement of the villagers in and out. They have also started launching gas bombs at homes and residents, prompting school to suspend classes for students for ten days in late April.

Earlier, the Israeli forces also obstructed the work of farmers and prevented them from accessing their land along a stretch of 5,000 dunums along the route of the Israeli segregation wall surrounding the village and destroyed agricultural roads.

ICRC chief in West Bank after deadly Israeli raids on Jenin

According to the Palestinian news agency Wafa, Jalbun is surrounded by three illegal Israeli settlements: "Ma'ale Gilboa," "Merav," and "Melekh Yishua," all of which were established after 1976. Additionally, the separation and expansion wall was built on its lands in 2004, after seizing approximately 1,500 dunums of land from the residents for the construction of the wall, which deprived the majority of the villagers of their lands.

The Israeli occupation authorities prevent the villagers from undertaking any construction activities within the 3,000 dunums near the wall. Several houses in the village have been demolished in that area, and others have received orders to halt construction and development.

The population of Jalbun is 3,500 people. Historically, the village covered an area of 34,000 dunums until 1948, when Zionist forces seized the land. After the construction of the Israeli segregation wall in 2004, Jalbun shrank to approximately 8,000 dunums.

Man recovering after randomly stabbed in East Village

WABC logo

EAST VILLAGE, Manhattan (WABC) -- Workers at a coffee hut on Astor Place have their heads on a swivel - they are steps away from where a man was randomly slashed .

Orlando Robles was working when the attack happened - the blood spattered all over the sidewalk in front of him.

"Oh it makes me feel so nervous because I've never seen something like that before. It was the first time I've ever seen that in my life. Especially here at a peaceful area," Robles said.

First responders washed away the blood Thursday evening in an area of the East Village where people drink their coffee and innocently sit, looking at their phones. Police say a 30-year-old man became a victim while doing just that.

It was enough to make Jo Dumas gasp.

"We were hoping it wasn't somebody getting hurt," Dumas said.

Dumas left the plaza yesterday, moments before police say the man was slashed in the back of the neck with a sharp object. When she returned, The plaza was closed - a pool of blood on the ground. It was a hard realization for someone who lived in the city years ago.

"I got mugged. I wasn't hurt, but I was tossed around, knocked over - then when they saw I had no money, they left me alone. But it was not the kind of weaponry where people are getting shot and stabbed like they are now," said Dumas.

"Unfortunately, nothing is safe anymore in New York," added David Itah.

Felony assaults are down more than 30 percent in the 9 Precinct, which covers the East Village, but that doesn't make Itah feel any safer.

"Maybe I shouldn't be sitting here - because it's crazy to think someone getting stabbed for no reason," said Itah.

Housing | three dead in two incidents of gunfire during deadly morning in oakland, subscriber only, housing | google eyes affordable homes project to launch downtown san jose village, housing development could mark start of downtown west.

journey homes village east

Known as Downtown West, Google’s massive mixed-use neighborhood would add office buildings, housing, shops, restaurants, parks, open spaces, entertainment hubs, cultural loops and hotel rooms to a mile-long area near the Diridon train station and SAP Center.

The affordable housing could sprout on a portion of the old Orchard Supply Hardware store. One of the buildings in that long-shuttered retail center was recently demolished.

Following this year’s demolition of the building at 720 West San Carlos Street, Google is evaluating its affordable housing development options at the site, according to Ryan Lamont, a Google spokesperson.

If a development proposal proceeds at the location, that would mark Google’s first distinct project in the Downtown West neighborhood on the western edges of downtown San Jose.

The precise timeline for the new neighborhood turned murky in February 2023 when Google disclosed that it was “reassessing” how best to move ahead with Downtown West, including the village’s launch date.

The transit-oriented village is expected to be a game-changer for downtown San Jose once it’s built out.

Google is also evaluating any considerations related to the Development Agreement that the tech titan concluded with the city of San Jose, according to the Google spokesperson.

In 2021, the San Jose City Council approved a development agreement with Google that sketched out the general concepts for the new neighborhood, along with associated community developments.

No precise proposals for a specific site or sites within the Downtown West footprint have emerged.

The prospect that an affordable housing development might rise atop part of the old Orchard Supply site emerged after four top San Jose city officials — all members of the city staff and not the mayor or City Council members — met on May 31 with one or more executives with Jamestown LLC, which is Google’s development partner for the Downtown West site.

The Jamestown LLC executive met with San Jose’s planning director, economic development director, housing director and deputy city manager, according to information posted on a San Jose city site that details meetings that city leaders, including politicians, have with lobbyists.

“Advancement of affordable site, potential development agreement amendment” was listed as the topic of the meeting.

If Google decides to proceed with, and gains approval for, an affordable housing development at the West San Carlos Street location, that would provide a hopeful counterpoint to some ominous assessments that arose in the wake of the search giant’s decision to reevaluate the timeline for Downtown West.

Mountain View-based Google has revealed plans to eliminate about 2,500 jobs in the Bay Area as part of the tech company’s wide-ranging cost-cutting. This regional staffing reduction is part of Google layoffs worldwide.

Google is hardly the only tech company that has conducted layoffs in the Bay Area and nationwide. About 200 different tech companies have revealed plans to cut jobs in the Bay Area alone.

Tech titans such as Facebook app owner Meta Platforms, Tesla, Cisco Systems, Broadcom, Salesforce, Intel, Twitter, PayPal, LinkedIn, Amazon, Apple, Lyft, eBay and Lam Research also have filed WARN notices detailing Bay Area job cuts.

The full details of the meetings between Google and the San Jose city top administrators weren’t immediately available.

What is certain is Google’s Downtown West neighborhood is a high-profile project in San Jose. Google expects to employ as many as 20,000 tech workers within the transit village’s footprint.
