journey center of earth movie

In Edinburgh, Scotland, in 1880, Professor Oliver Lindenbrook is knighted to the acclaim of his colleagues and students. When his prize pupil, Alec McEwen, presents him with a lava paperweight to commemorate the occasion, Oliver discovers that encased within the Italian lava is a rock from Iceland, halfway across the world from the volcano. After Oliver identifies some etchings on the rock as those of Saknussemm, an Icelandic scientist who years earlier descended into the interior of the earth, never to return, he sends a dispatch to his colleague, Prof. Goetaborg in Stockholm, asking him to confirm his findings. Upon learning that Goetaborg has vanished, Oliver realizes that the Swede has decided to conduct his own expedition. Now in a race to reach the center of the earth, Oliver and Alec leave immediately for Iceland and Alec bids farewell to his fiancée Jenny, Oliver's niece. Aware that they must begin their descent on the last day of May when the sunrise will pinpoint the opening into the Earth, Oliver hurries to assemble the equipment needed for his journey, but soon learns that it has all been purchased by Goetaborg. When he goes to confront Goetaborg about the situation, Oliver discovers the Swede lying lifeless in his hotel room, poisoned. Soon after, Goetaborg's wife Carla arrives to join her husband. Oliver breaks the news of her husband's death, but when he requests the use of the equipment, Carla agrees on the condition that she be allowed to join the expedition. With no other choice, Oliver reluctantly accepts, and the three are then joined by a husky Icelandic jack-of-all trades named Hans Belker and his pet duck Gertrude. As they slip inside the Earth on the last day of May, they are secretly followed by Count Saknussemm, a descendent of the original explorer. Their first trial occurs when a boulder, dislodged by an earthquake, tumbles threateningly toward them. After a narrow escape, they discern a series of notches left by Saknussemm, marking the path to the center of the Earth. Unknown to them, the count has sabotaged his ancestor's markings, sending Alec over the side of a precipice. After Hans rescues Alec, Carla uncovers the real markings, and they realize they have been tricked. Becoming separated from the rest when he follows a tunnel, Alec sinks through a bed of salt into a chamber, where he comes face to face with the count. When Alex refuses to carry the count's equipment, the count shoots at him, and the sound of gunfire alerts the others to their whereabouts. Following the echoing gunshots, the three soon find the wounded Alec and the count, who threatens them all at gunpoint. After Oliver tricks the count by throwing salt in his eyes, they accuse him of murdering Goetaborg and find him guilty in a mock trial. Although he is sentenced to die, the three find themselves unable to carry out the sentence. The Count then begrudgingly joins the expedition, and as their lamps begin to fail, he discovers a luminescent algae that renders artificial light unnecessary. Two hundred fifty six days later, Carla and Oliver are still bickering about the journey. When Alec discovers a massive mushroom forest, Carla prepares the mushrooms for dinner while the count orders Hans to chop the plants down to build a raft that will carry them across the ocean of the underworld. Just as they are about to set sail, an army of giant flesh-eating lizards appear, but they escape by fleeing into the water. Once at sea, they are encompassed by a magnetic force field which Oliver realizes is the center of the Earth, whose intense centrifugal force throws them onto shore, exhausted. As they sleep, Gertrude waddles off, and when Hans awakens, all he finds is a pile of bloody feathers. Realizing that the count has eaten Gertrude for dinner, Hans lunges at him, and when the count retreats, he is crushed by a falling pillar of rocks. The collapse reveals the sunken city of Atlantis, where they find the skeleton of Saknussemm, his finger pointing to a shaft that leads to the chimney of a volcano in Stromboli, Italy, the way out of the underground. Oliver sends Hans to inspect the shaft, and when Hans reports that it is obstructed by a giant block of stone, Oliver decides to dislodge the obstruction by using a cache of gunpowder found in Saknussemm's knapsack. The group takes refuge from the explosion in a giant asbestos chalice, but when the gunpowder fails to ignite, Oliver jumps down to relight it and is attacked by a giant scorpion. Escaping with Alec's help, Oliver climbs back into the chalice just as the gunpowder detonates, killing the serpent and destroying Atlantis. The chalice and its inhabitants are swept up though the tunnel and spewed out into the sea, where all but Alec, who lands in a tree, are rescued by Italian fishermen. The party then returns triumphant to Edinburgh, where Jenny and Alec are married. When Oliver asks Carla to stay and collaborate with him on his memoirs, she reacts with indignation at being relegated to the role of his secretary until he proposes and embraces her.

Journey To The Center Of The Earth

I never sleep. I hate those little slices of death. - Count Saknussem

The screenwriter evidently thought that since English-speaking people can have surnames like London or York then Swedes can be named Goetaborg (Goteborg is the second largest city in Sweden) - which is most unlikely.

The film's title card reads "Jules Verne's Journey to the Center of the Earth ." The film closes with the following written acknowledgment: "Carlsbad Caverns National Park served as the background for portions of the motion picture. Twentieth Century-Fox expresses its appreciation for the cooperation extended by the National Park Service of the U.S. Department of the Interior." According to studio publicity contained in the film's production files at the AMPAS Library, filming was allowed only at night because of daily public tours scheduled in the caverns. Location filming was also done in Edinburgh, Scotland; Amboy Crater, CA and Sequit Point, CA.        A number of studios and producers considered filming Verne's novel prior to Twentieth Century-Fox's production. According to December 1955 and February 1956 Los Angeles Times news items, producer Eugene Lourie planned to film a version in Italy with Gerard Philipe and Michele Morgan as the stars. According to September 1956 items in Hollywood Citizen-News and Daily Variety , producer Bryan Foy bought the rights to the novel for release through Columbia, but Columbia withdrew its plans upon learning that RKO had begun extensive pre-production work on the same subject.        In October 1958, a Los Angeles Examiner news item stated that Charles Brackett, in association with Twentieth Century-Fox, had bought the rights to the novel from the Korda estate and wanted Clifton Webb to play the role of "Oliver Lindenbrook." Although an April 1959 Hollywood Reporter news item added that Lincoln Barnett was to write the screenplay for Brackett, Barnett's contribution to the released film has not been determined. According to a March 1959 Hollywood Reporter news item, Cooga Mooga Film Productions was Pat Boone's production company. Under Boone'e deal with Twentieth Century-Fox, Boone was to produce and star in the film for a share in the profits, as well as a salary. Journey to tne Center of the Earth marked Boone's first production. In Verne's novel, the character of Lindenbrook was German. The characters "Carla" and "Saknussemm" were added for the film.        Journey to the Center of the Earth was nominated for the following Academy Awards: Best Art Direction, Best Set Decoration, Best Sound and Best Special Effects. Modern sources add that Anna Jane Sitton worked as Arlene Dahl's stand-in and that Alexander Scourby was orginally cast as Saknussemm. According to modern sources, Pat Boone wrote and recorded a theme song that was never used in the film.        Verne's novel has been filmed several other times. In 1976, Almena Films, a Spanish company, released Viaje al centro de la Tierra , starring Kenneth More and directed by Juan Piquer Simón, and in 1989, the Canon Group/Golan-Globus released a version directed by Rusty Lemorande and starring Erno Philips. From 1967-69, ABC television broadcast an animated series loosely based on Verne's novel. Although several new feature film versions of Verne's novel were announced in the early 2000s, none was in production as of spring 2005.

  • Science professor Trevor Anderson wasn't prepared to mind his teen nephew Sean ten days, while the kid's mother prepares their move to Canada. She stumbled across a box belonging to the knave's father, Trevor's brother Max, who went missing years ago. It contains a journal documenting his last journey, which happens to go to the very volcanic region in Iceland which Trevor's research, set up with Max, flashes as most notable. he decides to travel there and Sean insists to come along. They need a local guide and hire Hannah Ásgeirsson, who proves quite practical, while the Andersons provide ingenuity and bravado. Seeking shelter for a storm in a collapsing cave, they descend trough a volcanic exit into a road to the center of the world, and find it has its distinct fauna and flora, partially dinosaur-ancient, which adds to the dangers posed by the elements as they must seek a way out, which seems hopeless. — KGF Vissers
  • A scientist, his nephew, and a travel guide travel to explore the discoveries and mysteries that are in the centre of the Earth. Through their adventure, they begin to learn all the secrets that are hidden in the world and gain more understanding of the sciences. — RECB3
  • Journey to the Centre of the Earth is a science fantasy action-adventure movie. In this movie, the main characters are Trevor Anderson, Sean Anderson, Max Anderson, Hannah, Elizabeth. So, the synopsis of this movie is as follows. Trevor Anderson is a volcanologist and teaches the student in the university also. At the work, Trevor found that his brother's lab is being shut down because of a lack of funding. So, he comes home and sits in a chair to relax and found some messages on the answering machine. When he plays that recording, he found that the messages are from Liz (Max's wife and Sean's mother). He is forgotten that his nephew Sean is coming to spend some days with him. When Liz drops Sean, she leaves Trevor with a box of items that belonged to Max (Trevor's brother and Sean's father) who disappeared years before. Sean takes interest when Trevor says about his father, whom he never really had a chance to meet. Inside the box, Trevor discovers a couple of things. In that, he found the novel Journey to the Centre of the Earth by Jules Verne. Inside the book, he finds notes written by his brother. So, he goes to his laboratory to find out more information on the notes. There he decides that he must go to Iceland to investigate further. He decides to send Sean back to his mother, but Sean protest it, so he decides to bring Sean with him. They started looking for another volcanologist. When they get to that scientist, they meet his daughter Hannah, who informs them he is dead. She tells them that both her father and Max believed in that book. After some discussion, she offers to help them climb up to the instrument which suddenly started sending data. While hiking the mountain a lightning storm arrives and forces three of them into a cave. Because the lightning storm hit the cave, its entrance got collapses and trapping them inside the cave. So, they do not have any alternative way except to go deeper into the cave, which turns out in an abandoned mine. So, the three of them decide to go deeper into the cave to investigate for Hannah farther and Max into the mine. Suddenly they found a hole in a wall after hitting a trolly on the dead-end of the mine. While investigating the fall into a deep pit, taking them to the "Centre of the Earth". They all continue the travel until they discover a cave that Max lived in. They found some old journal of Max, meanwhile, Hannah discovers Max's dead body. So, they all bury him. At that point, Trevor reads a message from the journal that was written by Max on Sean's 3rd birthday. While reading Max's journal they realize that they must quickly leave, as the temperature is continuously increasing. Trevor figures out that they must find a steam power that can send them to the surface, and it must be done in 48 hours, or all of the water which creates the steam will be gone. Also, must do this before the temperature rises past 135 degrees. They begin by crossing the underground ocean, and suddenly the Trevor and Hannah got separated from Sean. So now Sean's guide is a little bird who has been present since the three of them entered the Centre. After Sean comes closer to the river, he encounters a Tyrannosaurus. Trevor who is searching for him saves by digging a hole in the wall and putting the Tyrannosaurus in a big hole. When they arrive at the river, they found it is dried up and all the water is on the other side of a wall. Trevor uses a flare to fire the magnesium in the wall and take out the water to create a powerful steam pressure to shoot them outside that place. When they throw out from that pit and destroy the home of an Italian man, they found that it was Italy where they have landed. Sean gives him a diamond (which he had found earlier in the caves) for the penalty of the destroyed house. Trevor founds that Sean has many more in his backpack, and they can be used for funding his brother's laboratory. At the end of this movie, Trevor hand over a book titled "Atlantis" on the final day of Sean's visit with him (and Hannah), suggesting they could hang out during Christmas break.

journey center of earth movie

Now streaming on:

There is a part of me that will always have affection for a movie like "Journey to the Center of the Earth." It is a small part and steadily shrinking, but once I put on the 3-D glasses and settled in my seat, it started perking up. This is a fairly bad movie, and yet at the same time maybe about as good as it could be. There may not be an 8-year-old alive who would not love it. If I had seen it when I was 8, I would have remembered it with deep affection for all these years, until I saw it again and realized how little I really knew at that age.

You are already familiar with the premise, that there is another land inside of our globe. You are familiar because the Jules Verne novel has inspired more than a dozen movies and countless TV productions, including a series, and has been ripped off by such as Edgar Rice Burroughs , who called it Pellucidar, and imagined that the Earth was hollow and there was another world on the inside surface. (You didn't ask, but yes, I own a copy of Tarzan at the Earth's Core with the original dust jacket.)

In this version, Brendan Fraser stars as a geologist named Trevor, who defends the memory of his late brother, Max, who believed the center of the Earth could be reached through "volcanic tubes." Max disappeared on a mysterious expedition, which, if it involved volcanic tubes, should have been no surprise to him. Now Trevor has been asked to spend some time with his nephew, Max's son, who is named Sean ( Josh Hutcherson ). What with one thing and another, wouldn't you know they find themselves in Iceland, and peering down a volcanic tube. They are joined in this enterprise by Hannah ( Anita Briem ), who they find living in Max's former research headquarters near the volcano he was investigating.

Now begins a series of adventures, in which the operative principle is: No matter how frequently or how far they fall, they will land without injury. They fall very frequently, and very far. The first drop lands them at the bottom of a deep cave, from which they cannot possibly climb, but they remain remarkably optimistic: "There must be a way out of here!" Sure enough, they find an abandoned mine shaft and climb aboard three cars of its miniature railway for a scene that will make you swear the filmmakers must have seen " Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom ."

Just like in that movie, they hurtle down the tracks at breakneck speeds; they're in three cars, on three more or less parallel tracks, leading you to wonder why three parallel tracks were constructed at great expense and bother, but just when such questions are forming, they have to (1) leap a chasm, (2) jump from one car to another, and (3) crash. It's a funny thing about that little railway: After all these years, it still has lamps hanging over the rails, and the electricity is still on.

The problem of lighting an unlit world is solved in the next cave they enter, which is inhabited by cute little birds that glow in the dark. One of them makes friends with Sean, and leads them on to the big attraction -- a world bounded by a great interior sea. This world must be a terrible place to inhabit; it has man-eating and man-strangling plants, its waters harbor giant-fanged fish and fearsome sea snakes that eat them, and on the further shore is a Tyrannosaurus rex.

So do the characters despair? Would you despair, if you were trapped miles below the surface in a cave and being chased by its hungry inhabitants? Of course not. There isn't a moment in the movie when anyone seems frightened, not even during a fall straight down for thousands of feet, during which they link hands like sky-divers and carry on a conversation. Trevor gets the ball rolling: "We're still falling!"

I mentioned 3-D glasses earlier in the review. Yes, the movie is available in 3-D in "selected theaters." Select those theaters to avoid. With a few exceptions (such as the authentic IMAX process), 3-D remains underwhelming to me -- a distraction, a disappointment and more often than not offering a dingy picture. I guess setting your story inside the Earth is one way to explain why it always seems to need more lighting.

The movie is being shown in 2-D in most theaters, and that's how I wish I had seen it. Since there's that part of me with a certain weakness for movies like this, it's possible I would have liked it more. It would have looked brighter and clearer, and the photography wouldn't have been cluttered up with all the leaping and gnashing of teeth. Then I could have appreciated the work of the plucky actors, who do a lot of things right in this movie, of which the most heroic is keeping a straight face.

10 Movies That Should Have Ended The Franchise

7 major hollywood franchises that should stick to animation (not live-action), 8 movies franchises that were supposed to replace the hunger games.

  • The Amazing Spider-Man franchise ended when the character's rights were bought by Disney.
  • The Jack Reacher movie series failed due to poor reception and was overshadowed by a TV show reboot.
  • The Percy Jackson movies received backlash and the franchise was later successfully rebooted as a TV show.

Hollywood movie franchises have been known to give up on the series part-way through, due to box office bombs or other circumstances. Several independent superhero movies ended when the rights to the character were bought by Disney, after struggling to compete with the MCU. Other sequels languished in development hell for years before the people involved with the project finally admitted that the next movie was never happening.

These planned movies' cancellations may have come as a relief or a disappointment to audiences. People will argue that certain unfinished movie franchises are still worth watching , especially when downright terrible reviews were not the reason the franchise was not completed. Some series were never finished because the actors or directors became busy with other projects. However, this is typically symptomatic of the most recent movie not being that great and the people involved losing interest in it as a result.

Some of these franchises are still ongoing, and though many continue to make money at the box office, it's clear where the stories should've stopped.

10 The Amazing Spider-Man

Andrew garfield's spider-man series ended after two movies when the rights were bought by disney..

Spider-Man famously saw multiple reboots within a short period, leading up to the character being incorporated into the MCU. The trilogy starring Tobey Maguire had a strong run until its widely criticized third installment, after which Andrew Garfield starred in two The Amazing Spider-Man movies, which achieved average reviews but objective box office success. Garfield and other actors' performances are the movies' biggest strengths, even if other writing decisions proved to be divisive. Leading up to the release of The Amazing Spider-Man 2 , a sequel was all but confirmed.

However, The Amazing Spider-Man coincided with the growing dominance of the MCU. The Amazing Spider-Man 3 was then canceled when Garfield was fired from the role after failing to appear at a significant press event, and Sony finally sold Spider-Man to Disney. Disney managed to add Spider-Man to the MCU in record time, with Tom Holland debuting as Peter Parker in 2016's Captain America: Civil War , only two years after Garfield was last seen in the role.

9 Jack Reacher

The jack reacher movie sequel failed before the franchise was overtaken by a reboot..

On paper, a Jack Reacher movie franchise starring Tom Cruise is a surefire win. It is exactly the kind of role Cruise is known for and there is a substantial amount of source material, with Lee Child's series to comprise 29 books and a short story collection as of October 2024. However, the dramatic failure of Jack Reacher: Never Go Back spelled doom for this adaptation. Director Edward Zwick blamed himself for Jack Reacher's failure , stating he did not understand what audiences wanted from the movie.

The longer gap between the first and second Jack Reacher movies suggests that they were playing each sequel by ear, and Never Go Back's awful reception told them it was hopeless. Meanwhile, Amazon produced a much more popular Reacher TV show, while Cruise returned to working on Top Gun and Mission: Impossible . Although it was never officially canceled, it would appear that Jack Reacher 3 is dead.

8 Journey To The Center Of The Earth

Dwayne johnson's new would-be franchise only featured him in one movie..

Johnson confirmed in 2018 that the movie(s) had been officially canceled, to a middling reaction when the franchise never had much of a dedicated fanbase.

Based on Jules Verne's classic adventure novels, the Journey to the Center of the Earth franchise kicked things off with a relatively successful movie of the same name, starring Brendan Fraser and Josh Hutcherson. Later, Dwayne Johnson replaced Fraser as the series' headliner, playing Hutcherson's character's stepfather rather than his uncle. While studio executives might have thought Journey 2: The Mysterious Island could be a solid setup for a series of movies starring Johnson, which seemed likely when Journey 2 was also a hit.

Plans were made for Journey 3: From the Earth to the Moon and Journey 4 to be filmed back to back. However, Journey 3 was abandoned due to problems with the script and Johnson's busy schedule. Johnson confirmed in 2018 that the movie(s) had been officially canceled, to a middling reaction when the franchise never had much of a dedicated fanbase.

7 National Treasure

National treasure was reimagined as a tv show after a long development — then canceled..

National Treasure and National Treasure: Book of Secrets were off-beat but solid action adventure mystery movies for the mid-2000s. With the second movie setting up the page 47 cliffhanger that would serve as the next sequel's plot, National Treasure 3 seemed like a given. However, the movie has now been stuck in development for almost two decades. Meanwhile, Disney+ produced the entertaining but short-lived sequel TV show that was canceled after one season.

In the wake of National Treasure: Edge of History , producer Jerry Bruckheimer suggests that National Treasure 3 could still happen . However, this seems unlikely when lead actor Nicolas Cage has, in no uncertain terms, said that the movie will never exist. Ultimately, if they wanted this movie sequel, they should have fought harder for it in the years following Book of Secrets , before the actors and the industry moved on.

6 Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles

The live-action tmnt trilogy ended after the second movie bombed at the box office..

Several Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles movies were canceled over the years, perhaps illustrating how the franchise would be better served by animation when the premise is inherently cartoonish. Despite this, the poorly-reviewed, live-action adaptation of the comics that came out in 2014 was a box-office hit. However, its sequel, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Out of the Shadows , failed at the box office as well as with critics.

Therefore, the third movie in the reboot series was promptly abandoned. Later on, the animated Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayhem became the best movie of this franchise, at least in the 21st century, earning a Golden Globe nomination for its efforts. However, despite the failure of the previous live-action TMNT movies, the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: The Last Ronin comic series is getting an R-rated, live-action adaptation that will come out alongside Mutant Mayhem's sequel.

Hollywood still seems to maintain that live-action is inherently superior, but these big franchises exhibit better storytelling through animation.

5 Percy Jackson & The Olympians

Both percy jackson movies were poorly received, leading to a reboot..

The movie adaptation of Rick Riordan's first Percy Jackson & the Olympian novel is widely hated due to the changes made to the source material that made the story unrecognizable to fans. Despite The Lightning Thief's failures, producers forged ahead with a sequel, releasing Sea of Monsters a reasonable three years later. However, Sea of Monsters also buckled under the weight of the inherent story problems the first movie established, and any dreams of seeing the movie franchise to completion were dashed.

A decade later, Percy Jackson came back strong with a TV show reboot that retained the most essential parts of the books. With an age-appropriate cast and Riordan on board as a consultant, the show has a bright future, with Percy Jackson and the Olympians season 2 now in the works (at the time of writing). In the case of Percy Jackson , abandoning the unpopular movie franchise was doubtlessly the right choice.

4 Fantastic Four

Fantastic four went through the same reboot cycle as spider-man..

Fantastic Four represents a similar phenomenon in Hollywood as Spider-Man , being the two most famous Marvel properties. With such a famous group of superheroes at their disposal, studio executives and filmmakers desperately wanted to make something out of it. However, while Sam Raimi's Spider-Man trilogy is something of a beloved classic and Christopher Nolan's Dark Knight trilogy is just shy of a complete masterpiece, the 2000s Fantastic Four saw mediocre at best reviews and fizzled out after two movies, despite there being plans for more.

The series' branding was complicated when Chris Evans became infinitely more famous for playing the MCU's Captain America at the beginning of the 2010s. 20th Century then produced a Fantastic Four reboot in 2015 with a new cast in what was ultimately a futile attempt to see some success with Marvel's biggest property before admitting defeat and selling out to Disney. The MCU is now working on adding Fantastic Four to its lineup, with Pedro Pascal and Vanessa Kirby in the lead roles.

Guillermo del Toro & Neil Marshall's demon superhero series has a rocky history.

From the macabre mind of Guillermo del Toro, in partnership with his co-director Neil Marshall, came a bizarre superhero movie about a demon summoned by the Nazis who is rescued by the Allies and grows up to become a hero. Hellboy was never a massive blockbuster, but the first two movies in the franchise were profitable and well-reviewed. However, Hellboy 3 was canceled after a decade in development due to del Toro's busy schedule and problems securing funding.

Symptomatic of Hollywood's oversaturation with reboots, Marshall directed a reboot that came out shortly after it was confirmed that del Toro's sequel was not happening. While David Harbour seemed like the perfect person to take over from Ron Perlman, the Hellboy reboot was a decided failure. In addition to the movie's lackluster writing, the strange premise's time and place may have simply faded into history.

2 Divergent

A decrease in genre interest and a weak story led to divergent's early end..

Despite the largely derivative story, Divergent initially seemed like it would be just as strong of a franchise.

Riding on the coattails of The Hunger Games , one of the most successful blockbuster franchises of the 2010s, Divergent benefited from the popularity of the young adult dystopian genre at the time. Despite the largely derivative story, Divergent initially seemed like it would be just as strong of a franchise. Lead actress Shailene Woodley had already starred in Best Picture nominee The Descendants alongside George Clooney when the series began, while other A-listers took on supporting roles.

However, Divergent's story problems started to overshadow its marketability with the second movie, while there was a downturn in YA dystopias with the end of The Hunger Games . The third Divergent movie received the worst reviews yet, leaving studio executives scrambling to complete the series. While there was talk of wrapping things up with a TV movie, most of the cast left the franchise, and the final movie was eventually scrapped.

Movie franchises including Divergent, The Maze Runner, and Mortal Engines had hopes of being the next Hunger Games but didn't live up to the hype.

1 The Chronicles of Narnia

The silver chair was in development for years before netflix bought narnia..

The movie adaptation of C. S. Lewis' classic fantasy novel The Lion, the Witch & the Wardrobe proved to be as magical and spectacular as fans could have hoped for, becoming a critical and box office hit. This guaranteed a sequel, but the massive changes to the book made for Prince Caspian did not entirely work out in its favor. While the movie still made a profit, the fact that it did not make as much of a profit as its predecessor was the defining point.

The next movie, The Voyage of the Dawn Treader , was already dealing with one of the more difficult Narnia books to adapt and bombed at the box office. Despite this, The Silver Chair was in development for years before Netflix bought the rights to the series, with Joe Johnston slated to direct and Millie Bobby Brown being offered the lead role. The Chronicles of Narnia has a complicated history in Hollywood, making some wonder if the movie franchise should have been canceled just to make another one.

The 2000s were a thrilling time for action-adventure buffs, thanks to the surge of the Internet and groundbreaking advancements in technology that revolutionized filmmaking. With CGI and digital cinematography pushing the boundaries, filmmakers transported audiences to reimagined historical realms and dazzling new universes, inviting them on epic and thrilling journeys from the comfort of their screens.

From the mysterious depths of Transylvania to the stunning beauty of the Galapagos Islands and the vast landscapes of Middle-earth, these films not only entertained but also breathed new life into familiar genres. Modern audiences can relieve the excitement with these movies that represent the best action-adventure movies of the 2000s , each one a testament to the era’s creativity.

10 ‘Van Helsing’ (2004)

Directed by stephen sommers.

Vigilante monster-hunter Abraham Van Helsing ( Hugh Jackman ) takes on the ultimate undead nemesis: Count Dracula ( Richard Roxburgh ). In Van Helsing , audiences are pulled into a reimagined late 19th-century Transylvania, where humanity is tormented by a parade of nightmarish creatures. From savage werewolves and the infamous Frankenstein to Dracula’s bloodthirsty brides , no monster is too daunting for the fearless demon-slayer. Teaming up with the gutsy Romanian Princess, Anna Valerious ( Kate Beckinsale ), Van Helsing wages war against an army of horrifying minions across Eastern Europe in a high-stakes race against time.

Blending the dark, eerie ambiance of Transylvania coupled with steampunk aesthetics, Van Helsing offers a fresh and rather animated take on a tortured hero with a shadowy past. The plot might take some wild leaps, but the electrifying action scenes more than compensate for it. Audiences who are into epic crossbow battles, bone-chilling fights, and mind-blowing monstrous transformations are in for a wild ride.

9 ‘Lara Croft: Tomb Raider’ (2001)

Directed by simon west.

The iconic video game comes to life in Lara Croft: Tomb Raider . Lara Croft ( Angelina Jolie ) is the ultimate one-woman powerhouse. Born into British aristocracy, Lara might have grown up with a silver spoon, but she’s not afraid to get her hands dirty. As a fearless antiquities archaeologist, she scours the globe, plunging into jungle ruins and ancient temples on the hunt for powerful artifacts. When her latest quest requires her to obtain two halves of a time-controlling relic, Lara is pushed to her limits. Failure to secure the artifact on time has deadly consequences, not just for Lara but the entire world.

Although Lara Croft has gained immense popularity thanks to her undeniable beauty, she’s more than just a pretty face. A fierce adventurer at heart, Lara is armed with hand-to-hand combat skills, expert weapons training, and a mastery of foreign languages, all of which prepare her for the demanding expeditions she often goes into. With action sequences reminiscent of the Indiana Jones movies, audiences can expect Lara to dodge giant boulders and go toe-to-toe with mechanical monsters. Nostalgia plays a big role in enjoying this movie, but Angelina Jolie's committed performance goes a long way in elevating the story.

8 ‘journey to the center of the earth’ (2008), directed by eric brevig.

Science professor Trevor Anderson ( Brendan Fraser ) never imagined he’d be roped into babysitting his teenage nephew, Sean ( Josh Hutcherson ), for ten days. But when Sean's mom hands Trevor a box that belonged to his missing brother, Max ( Jean Michel Paré ), everything changes. Inside, Trevor finds a book filled with clues about Max’s last adventure. Determined to follow his brother’s trail, Trevor sets off to Iceland with Sean, joined by their guide, Hannah Ásgeirsson ( Anita Briem ), embarking on a journey that leads them to the fabled world at the center of the Earth.

The science in Journey to the Center of the Earth might be more fiction than fact, but it doesn’t take away the adventure element from it. The real thrill lies in watching the beloved trio scaling snow-capped mountains , getting trapped in caves, and, most iconically, falling into a deep pit. Viewers are invited on a trip through Iceland’s stunning terrain, complete with spectacular geysers and volcanic heat. Just don’t be surprised by the wild, clearly made-up creatures like carnivorous plants and mischievous fish. Journey to the Center of the Earth deserves a revival if only to see Fraser and Hutcherson together again.

Journey to the Center of the Earth

7 ‘sky captain and the world of tomorrow’ (2004), directed by kerry conran.

In an alternate 1939, where technology has taken a wild leap forward, New York City is under siege by a fleet of giant flying robots. While chasing a story about the mysterious disappearances of famous scientists worldwide, intrepid reporter Polly Perkins ( Gwyneth Paltrow ) stumbles upon a chilling connection to the robotic assault. In need of backup, she turns to her ex-boyfriend, Harry Joseph “Joe” Sullivan ( Jude Law ), the dashing captain of a legion of pilots. Together, they jet set on a high-flying, globe-trotting adventure to uncover the evil mastermind plotting the world’s destruction.

Sky Captain and the World of Tomorrow pulls viewers into a fantastical version of the past, blending the grittiness of wartime America with a dazzling art deco, steampunk twist . The visual treat also features adventurous elements that remind audiences of classic wartime movies, such as uniformed heroes and soaring fighter planes. The storyline itself might be straightforward, but its retro-futuristic aesthetics bring something new and fresh, cementing Sky Captain 's status as one of the most underrated sci-fi movies of the 2000s .

Sky Captain and the World of Tomorrow (2004)

6 ‘national treasure’ (2004), directed by jon turteltaub.

The rollicking action-adventure flick National Treasure follows Benjamin Franklin Gates ( Nicolas Cage ), an adventurous American historian , cryptographer, and heir to a long line of treasure hunters. Since infancy, Ben has listened to the stories of a national treasure, a priceless artifact that connects the secrets of the Knights Templar, the Founding Fathers, and the Freemasons. Now all grown-up, Ben is ready to pick up where his father left off, but his quest gets complicated when his partner-turned-nemesis, Ian Howe ( Sean Bean ), is off to find the treasure for all the wrong reasons.

A fast-paced, all-ages thriller, National Treasure borrows elements of adventure and heist movies . Ben’s detective work involves cracking codes and uncovering hidden messages, including one on the Declaration of Independence itself. Audiences are pulled to different corners of the world, from a lost ship frozen in the Arctic to the storied halls of Boston’s Old North Church. Arguably a Disney-fied, family-friendly take on The Da Vinci Code , National Treasure is a throwback to the classic adventure movies of yore.

National Treasure

5 ‘king kong’ (2005), directed by peter jackson.

Amid the peak of the Great Depression, the cash-strapped filmmaker Carl Denham ( Jack Black ) devises a bold plan: shooting his next film on the mysterious Skull Island. He recruits struggling New York City vaudeville actress Ann Darrow ( Naomi Watts ), taking her on the journey under the pretense that they’ll be filming in glamorous Singapore. With playwright Jack Driscoll ( Adrien Brody ) in tow, the trio sets sail with a film crew of sorts, heading straight into the heart of Skull Island’s untamed wilderness. Little do they know, Skull Island is teeming with dangers beyond their wildest nightmares, from cannibalistic natives to ferocious beasts to the ferocious, eight-meter-tall silverback gorilla King Kong ( Andy Serkis ).

King Kong has seen countless retellings over the years, yet it always captures the same thrilling essence: the terrifying yet strangely tender bond between the mighty gorilla and the empathetic Ann . The movie starts slow with its exposition, but once the crew lands on the storm-battered shores of Skull Island, the pace picks up quickly. Scene by scene, the tension builds, setting the stage for the breathtaking reveal of Kong himself. With stunning visual effects, Peter Jackson 's King Kong is a great new take on this classic.

4 ‘Master and Commander: The Far Side of the World’ (2003)

Directed by peter weir.

Amidst the turmoil of the Napoleonic Wars, Master and Commander: The Far Side of the World chronicles the escapades of Captain Jack Aubrey ( Russell Crowe ) aboard the British frigate HMS Surprise. In charge of intercepting and neutralizing the menacing French warship Acheron, havoc wrecks among vessels off the South American coast. Despite the more technologically advanced Acheron, Aubrey's unyielding spirit and tactical brilliance are strong enough to push through treacherous waters and dangerous enemies.

While the movie loads more on character development than combat action, it still packs adventure as it takes audiences to rugged Brazilian shores , around the treacherous Cape Horn, and into the mystique of the Galapagos Islands. One of the best ship movies , Master and Commander offers a gritty portrayal of 19th-century British naval life far from grandeur and pristine and depicts the harsh realities faced by the crew of the HMS Surprise. As the ship becomes embroiled in maritime battles, the captain and sailors also deal with internal conflict and unrest, adding more tension to the chaos of war.

Master and Commander: The Far Side of the World

3 ‘pirates of the caribbean: the curse of the black pearl’ (2003), directed by gore verbinski.

In Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl , daring blacksmith Will Turner ( Orlando Bloom ) teams up with the enigmatic Captain Jack Sparrow ( Johnny Depp ) to rescue Elizabeth Swann ( Keira Knightley ), the governor’s spirited daughter, from the clutches of the cursed Captain Barbossa ( Geoffrey Rush ). As they sail through the rough waters of the Caribbean, they uncover the sinister truth behind Barbossa’s quest for immortality and the Aztec gold. With swashbuckling action and unexpected plot twists, Will and Jack must outsmart their foes to save Elizabeth and break the curse plaguing the seas.

Although the film’s popularity is mainly attributed to the odd and quotable Jack Sparrow , Bloom and Knightley’s chemistry is just as praise-worthy and balances Sparrow’s madness just perfectly. Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl single-handedly revived the swashbuckling genre , making pirates fashionable again. Fun, funny, and with impressive visual effects, the film remains a gem of noughties action-adventure.

Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl

2 ‘crouching tiger, hidden dragon’ (2000), directed by ang lee.

Set against the backdrop of early nineteenth-century China, Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon sweeps audiences into the waning years of the Qing Dynasty. The legendary swordsman Li Mu Bai ( Chow Yun-Fat ) is ready to hang up his blade and seek enlightenment, entrusting his iconic Green Destiny sword to his steadfast confidant, Yu Shu Lien ( Michelle Yeoh ). Assigned to deliver this legendary weapon to Governor Yu, Shu Lien finds herself in a game of cat-and-mouse when Yu’s daughter, Yen Ju ( Zhang Ziyi ), unexpectedly steals the sword.

Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon isn’t an ordinary action-adventure flick. Strongly rooted in the Wuxia art of filmmaking, the movie is celebrated for its hypnotizing martial arts sequences while maintaining a deep, poignant plot. Featuring elements of Chinese stories, such as honorable warriors, powerful swordswomen, and mystical elements, Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon offers a soulful depth by questioning good versus bad and the true meaning of forgiveness .

1 ‘The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring’ (2001)

Frodo Baggins ( Elijah Wood ), an unassuming hobbit with a heart as brave as any, ventures on a grand odyssey alongside eight stalwart companions. Entrusted with the task of delivering the One Ring to the fiery depths of Mount Doom, Frodo receives valuable help from the sage wizard Gandalf ( Ian McKellen ), the honorable Aragorn ( Viggo Mortensen ), the nimble elf Legolas ( Orlando Bloom ), the sturdy dwarf Gimli ( John Rhys-Davies ), the proud Boromir (Sean Bean), and three hobbit friends, Sam ( Sean Astin ), Merry ( Dominic Monaghan ), and Pippin ( Billy Boyd ).

Crafting a film adaptation of J.R.R. Tolkien ’s iconic works is no small feat. The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring , renowned for its intricate world-building and detailed character arcs, transports viewers to realms beyond imagination. While newcomers to the lore might initially feel lost in this fantastical universe, fear not, for the heart of the story lies not in its mind-boggling exposition but in the universal struggle between good versus evil . Introducing audiences to the mines of Moria, the enchanted forests of the Elves and more, there’s always a new adventure waiting with every watch of the film.
