JEFFREY SEGAL

Our mission is simple:, to spread light and love; to enlighten and enliven; to inspire and empower..

In 2008, we opened the doors at Mystic Journey Bookstore with the intention of becoming a metaphysical portal of exploration and intrigue, a place to delve into new depths of knowledge and to reach great spiritual heights.  We manifested our vision of a community center and marketplace, a gathering spot, a place where neighbors and visitors could find wisdom, expansion and peace.

Mystic Journey is now the largest metaphysical hub in Los Angeles for healing crystals and stones, intuitive psychic readings and astrology, spiritual and visionary books, incense, candles, sage, singing bowls and gemstone jewelry. In addition to free book signings with best selling authors, we offer a wide variety of workshops, including crystal, chakra & sound healing, meditation & yoga, animal communication, mediumship, developing intuition, goddess empowerment, practical magic & alchemy, and Reiki & tarot classes.

Our knowledgeable & compassionate staff would love to help you on your Spirit Journey. We are here to serve, and be of service. We are open to Life and all the greatness it has to offer.

Southport mourns the loss of Laurie Hardman, cherished owner of historic Broadhursts Bookshop

T he North West's oldest bookshop has lost its beloved owner, Laurie Hardman, who "touched the lives of book-lovers in Southport and far beyond".

Laurie began his journey at Broadhursts Bookshop in 1969. The shop is a local gem, operating from the same building since 1920 when it was opened by Charles Broadhurst after his return from World War One.

In 1987, following Charles' death, Laurie took ownership of the cherished establishment, the ECHO reports. Broadhursts Bookshop announced Laurie's passing on Twitter /X, paying tribute to "our proprietor, boss, and friend" who was the "heart and soul of Broadhursts for many years, and will be much missed in the months and years to come".

'My shop was bombed in Ukraine - so I travelled 1,400 miles and opened one there'

Aldi recruiting for Lancashire stores as 40 new jobs up for grabs

The post read: "Many a child passing through our doors gazed up in amazement at his 6'7" height (as did a fair few adults!) - and his dexterity in wrapping a brown paper parcel to perfection never failed to draw admiring glances from those who love brown paper packages tied up with string.

"The times when favourite authors and even celebrities passing through the doors, for book signings or just as customers, were always exciting - never more so than when we hosted the wonderful Sir Terry Pratchett for a signing in 2008 (an author much loved by Laurie)."

"For us booksellers, he was a boss who was always entertaining, often generous, and taught us so much about the world of bookselling. He was a man who loved books to his very core, and both recognised and valued that in others (even when you loved books or authors he disliked!)"

"Broadhursts will never be quite the same without Laurie, and we will miss him very much. But we will continue on his literary legacy in the bookshop as best we can - there may be new faces sitting in his chair, but the bookselling spirit he taught us will go on. RIP Laurie."

In a 2022 interview with the ECHO, Laurie fondly described the unique charm of the bookstore, stating: "It's a unique experience coming into the place. It's not just any old bookshop, and that is increasingly what people are looking for.

"You can't go anywhere else and find a shop like this. We have customers who came in as children by their parents and they have brought their children in and they have brought their children in so we get generations coming in who remember the building.

"So we have a continuity that customers enjoy. A place like this must build up over time but it has to grow organically."

He added: "The world changes very quickly these days. Ferris Bueller said 'life moves pretty fast. If you don't stop and look around once in a while, you could miss it."

Past and present customers were saddened to hear about Laurie's death. Writing on Twitter/X, one said: "Devastated to hear this - I only pop in every couple of months as I now live down south, I have known and corresponded with Laurie for over 40 years and we always had a lovely catch up. I was one of those children who grew to know him as a good friend. Sending love to all.""

Another said: "I'm so very sorry to hear this sad news. I have known this wonderful bookshop for many decades and hope it will remain the same for many more to come. Deepest sympathy and condolences to all who loved him."

Another added: "That's incredibly sad to hear, my sincerest condolences to you all, it was always a great pleasure chatting with Laurie, a gentleman bookseller, he'll be greatly missed."

How the FBI's fake cell phone company put criminals into real jail cells

There is a constant arms race between law enforcement and criminals, especially when it comes to technology. For years, law enforcement has been frustrated with encrypted messaging apps, like Signal and Telegram. And law enforcement has been even more frustrated by encrypted phones, specifically designed to thwart authorities from snooping.

But in 2018, in a story that seems like it's straight out of a spy novel, the FBI was approached with an offer: Would they like to get into the encrypted cell phone business? What if they could convince criminals to use their phones to plan and document their crimes — all while the FBI was secretly watching? It could be an unprecedented peek into the criminal underground.

To pull off this massive sting operation, the FBI needed to design a cell phone that criminals wanted to use and adopt. Their mission: to make a tech platform for the criminal underworld. And in many ways, the FBI's journey was filled with all the hallmarks of many Silicon Valley start-ups.

On this show, we talk with journalist Joseph Cox , who wrote a new book about the FBI's cell phone business, called Dark Wire . And we hear from the federal prosecutor who became an unlikely tech company founder.

New York's A Book Place: Meet the charming bookstore that also hosts candle magic workshops

Independent bookstores are the heartbeats of their communities. They provide culture and community, generate local jobs and sales tax revenue, promote literacy and education, champion and center diverse and new authors, connect readers to books in a personal and authentic way, and actively support the right to read and access to books in their communities.

Each week we profile an independent bookstore, sharing what makes each one special and getting their expert and unique book recommendations.

This week we have Jocelyn Kaleita, owner of A Book Place in Riverhead, New York!

What’s your store’s story?

Opened in the summer of 2022, A Book Place is an indie bookstore in the middle of Long Island's North and South forks with carefully selected book collections and local handmade gifts. The shop is warm with its natural light and white-washed beams, making you instantly want to discover what's on the shelves, chat and relax. It is steps away from the Long Island Aquarium and connected to the local favorite restaurant Jerry and the Mermaid .

Check out: USA TODAY's Independent Bookstores Map

What makes your independent bookstore special?

Instead of a bestsellers section, A Book Place has a local author area for both adults and children. It sells locally crafted items, like candles, crochet gifts, bags, coffee and jewelry. We offer classes by artists and crafters, host book clubs, arrange events and work closely with local businesses, schools and libraries to support additional events, fundraisers and our community.

What's your favorite section in your store?

This is hard to answer as we change displays and settings around so often. I would have to say one of the most fun things we've gotten to do was to supply a patron with her reading books for a fun challenge: "reading through the alphabet." We were asked to select a book for each letter of the alphabet, wrap it and write clues as to what it was, but not tell what it was.

What book do you love to recommend to customers and why?

My favorite book is "Alice's Adventures in Wonderland," but most of my patrons are adults, who read either romance or thriller. The first week I was open the two authors who sold out instantly were Stephen King and Dean Koontz, both of whom I have only read one book of. I was seriously rethinking my choice of location.

It all worked out and now I do have a healthy mix, with mostly patrons who love for me to recommend a good book. I believe books choose you, so playing this game is often just a walk around the shop and talking to the patron about what they have read, enjoyed, or maybe haven't enjoyed.

Currently, my favorite book to recommended is "The Lost Bookshop" by Evie Woods.

What are some of your store's events, programs, or partnerships coming up this quarter that you would like to share?

We've had author events, birthday parties, Bestie Night and a few mini–Maker Markets. Most recently we have started crochet classes: beginner, advanced, adult and child's and home school. The shop has a book club that has been meeting for just over a year. We also host candle magic workshops, which offer a tranquil evening learning about aromatherapy, crystals and meditation.

Why is shopping at local, independent bookstores important?

There is the obvious reason: you're investing in your own community's longevity and economic stability. Your support directly supports local non-profits, causes and affiliates through donations, research and community events.

Shopping at an independent bookstore can offer better service that is more customizable and helpful. You are given more of a diversity in products and brands, as well as, reading material. Many of their vendors are local and can customize a product or arrange for a small batch to be delivered directly, saving the customer money. Getting to know small business owners is like making a new friend. Small businesses seamlessly grow a sense of community, recognition and trust you never build within a big box.

Last, and maybe the biggest, supporting a local indie bookstore makes everyone feel good! Instant serotonin boost when you buy something meaningful and special and are supporting something someone's dream!

Mikah Carlos Inspires SCC’s Class of 2024

Mikah Carlos speaking at Scottsdale Community College's 2024 Commencement ceremony

What a gratifying night! Scottsdale Community College’s Spring 2024 Commencement celebrated all the hard work of our newly minted graduates, punctuated with hugs, high-fives, and a few teary goodbyes. Mikah Carlos, a proud Artichoke and a member of the Salt River Pima-Maricopa Indian Community, returned to her alma mater to share her inspiring journey and impart wisdom to the new graduates.

“It is an honor to address you tonight as an alum of Scottsdale Community College,” Mikah began, reflecting on her journey that started in 2012. After high school, she moved to Philadelphia for college, but family health issues brought her back home to Arizona. “I packed up my bags and moved back across the country to my home and enrolled in classes here at SCC the day before the semester began,” she recounted.

Mikah’s initial time at SCC was marked by struggle and doubt. “I was devastated about moving and wasn’t dedicated to my classes. I thought for a while that I probably wouldn’t ever see graduation,” she admitted. However, the support she received from the SCC faculty made all the difference. “I had a few professors reach out to me and check in to see how they could help, and countless office hours later, I found myself back on track.”

Mikah’s journey from a 1.2 GPA in her first year to a 4.0 GPA in her final semester, all while taking 18 credits, is a testament to her resilience and the supportive environment at SCC. “That wouldn’t have been possible without the support system available to me here at SCC,” she emphasized.

As she transitioned to Arizona State University (ASU), Mikah realized how well SCC had prepared her. She missed the close-knit community, the small classes, and the professors who knew her by name. “Most of all, I missed the free parking,” she joked. “Even after I graduated from ASU, I still found myself returning to SCC to take a few courses here and there to satisfy my desire to keep learning.”

Now a Council Member of the Salt River Pima-Maricopa Indian Community, Mikah continues to value lifelong learning. “I keep looking at SCC’s course book to see what new skills I can add to my toolbox. I hope you will continue to do the same,” she encouraged the graduates. Her words are a reminder that learning is a lifelong journey, and SCC is always here to support you on your next steps.

Mikah acknowledged the diverse paths students take to graduate. “No matter what your journey looked like getting here, congratulations; you have made it. Never let anyone minimize your victories,” she urged. She encouraged the new alumni to maintain a student mindset, always eager to learn and grow and to stay engaged with SCC. Her words are a call to action, a reminder that SCC is not just a place you graduated from but a community that will always be here for you.

Mikah's story of perseverance, support, and continuous learning resonated with many of us in the audience. We at SCC are proud to count her among our distinguished alumni and are inspired by her journey and dedication to education.

Savvino-storozhevsky monastery and museum.

Savvino-Storozhevsky Monastery and Museum

Zvenigorod's most famous sight is the Savvino-Storozhevsky Monastery, which was founded in 1398 by the monk Savva from the Troitse-Sergieva Lavra, at the invitation and with the support of Prince Yury Dmitrievich of Zvenigorod. Savva was later canonised as St Sabbas (Savva) of Storozhev. The monastery late flourished under the reign of Tsar Alexis, who chose the monastery as his family church and often went on pilgrimage there and made lots of donations to it. Most of the monastery’s buildings date from this time. The monastery is heavily fortified with thick walls and six towers, the most impressive of which is the Krasny Tower which also serves as the eastern entrance. The monastery was closed in 1918 and only reopened in 1995. In 1998 Patriarch Alexius II took part in a service to return the relics of St Sabbas to the monastery. Today the monastery has the status of a stauropegic monastery, which is second in status to a lavra. In addition to being a working monastery, it also holds the Zvenigorod Historical, Architectural and Art Museum.

Belfry and Neighbouring Churches

journey book shop

Located near the main entrance is the monastery's belfry which is perhaps the calling card of the monastery due to its uniqueness. It was built in the 1650s and the St Sergius of Radonezh’s Church was opened on the middle tier in the mid-17th century, although it was originally dedicated to the Trinity. The belfry's 35-tonne Great Bladgovestny Bell fell in 1941 and was only restored and returned in 2003. Attached to the belfry is a large refectory and the Transfiguration Church, both of which were built on the orders of Tsar Alexis in the 1650s.

journey book shop

To the left of the belfry is another, smaller, refectory which is attached to the Trinity Gate-Church, which was also constructed in the 1650s on the orders of Tsar Alexis who made it his own family church. The church is elaborately decorated with colourful trims and underneath the archway is a beautiful 19th century fresco.

Nativity of Virgin Mary Cathedral

journey book shop

The Nativity of Virgin Mary Cathedral is the oldest building in the monastery and among the oldest buildings in the Moscow Region. It was built between 1404 and 1405 during the lifetime of St Sabbas and using the funds of Prince Yury of Zvenigorod. The white-stone cathedral is a standard four-pillar design with a single golden dome. After the death of St Sabbas he was interred in the cathedral and a new altar dedicated to him was added.

journey book shop

Under the reign of Tsar Alexis the cathedral was decorated with frescoes by Stepan Ryazanets, some of which remain today. Tsar Alexis also presented the cathedral with a five-tier iconostasis, the top row of icons have been preserved.

Tsaritsa's Chambers

journey book shop

The Nativity of Virgin Mary Cathedral is located between the Tsaritsa's Chambers of the left and the Palace of Tsar Alexis on the right. The Tsaritsa's Chambers were built in the mid-17th century for the wife of Tsar Alexey - Tsaritsa Maria Ilinichna Miloskavskaya. The design of the building is influenced by the ancient Russian architectural style. Is prettier than the Tsar's chambers opposite, being red in colour with elaborately decorated window frames and entrance.

journey book shop

At present the Tsaritsa's Chambers houses the Zvenigorod Historical, Architectural and Art Museum. Among its displays is an accurate recreation of the interior of a noble lady's chambers including furniture, decorations and a decorated tiled oven, and an exhibition on the history of Zvenigorod and the monastery.

Palace of Tsar Alexis

journey book shop

The Palace of Tsar Alexis was built in the 1650s and is now one of the best surviving examples of non-religious architecture of that era. It was built especially for Tsar Alexis who often visited the monastery on religious pilgrimages. Its most striking feature is its pretty row of nine chimney spouts which resemble towers.
