Josh Groban (born February 27, 1981) is an American multi-platinum, award-winning, classical, pop and operatic singer, hailing from Los Angeles, California, U.S.

Having started life with dreams of acting, it wasn’t until the summers of ’97 and ’98 where he attended the Interlochen Center for the Arts Camp in Michigan that singing became his priority. Groban subsequently studied at the Los Angeles County High School for the Arts, and Cernegie Mellon University, before dropping out of the latter having been offered a recording contract. Aided by singing at the 1999 inauguration of the Governor of California Gray Davis, a duet with Céline Dion, and a popular appearance in “Alley McBeal”, Groban’s early career went from strength to strength

Following a host of benefit shows including “The Andre Agassi Grand Slam Event for Children” with Elton John, Stevie Wonder, Don Henley and Robin Williams, “Muhammed Ali’s Fight Night Foundation”, and “The Family Celebration”, the singer released his self-titled debut album. The November 2001 release highlighted Groban’s voice as a force to be reckoned with, notably on the singles “Gira Con Me Questa Notte” and “Alla Luce Del Sole”. The album subsequently went double-platinum, earned favourable reviews from critics, and spawned the Adult Contemporary Chart No. 1 “To Where You Are”.

The singer’s classical style and enviable vocal range have led him to perform at a number of high profile events including the 2002 Winter Olympics in Salt Lake City, the Nobel Peace Prize Concert in Oslo, Norway, the Vatican in Rome, Italy, and at the World’s Children’s Day alongside Céline Dion, Nick Carter and Enrique Iglesias. The singer’s sophomore full-length “Closer”, released in November 2003, represented a much more honest and open approach to songwriting and producing than its predecessor. The album ultimately topped the U.S Billboard 200 after debuting at No. 4, aided by the popular singles “You Raise Me Up” and “Remember When It Rained”. Groban built on this success with the release of “Live at the Greek” in 2004, “Awake” in 2006, the Christmas album “Noel” in 2007, “Illuminations” in 2010, and “All That Echoes” in 2013.

Live reviews

What a sensational performance. Setting aside for a moment his immense talent as a singer and pianist he is a truly great performer who clearly appreciates his audience and goes to the nth degree to give back to them and interact making them feel include in the show. Indeed, he returned to the stage to give a second encore in response to crowd’s applause and finished the night with heart felt version of ‘You Raise Me Up’. Everyone on stage with him from the orchestra to guest stars seemed genuinely delighted to be there and a part of the show.

He did a lot of musical numbers from his latest album Stages including songs from Chess, Carousel and Phantom of the Opera. It’s hard to pick favourites from a show that was so consistently strong but if pushed to choose I’d say his production of Le temps des cathédrales from Notre-Dame de Paris was particularly mesmerizing. Another highlight of the evening for me was when he revealed Louise Dearman as a guest performer. I first saw her several years ago staring alongside Rachel Tucker in the West End production of WICKED The Musical. What can say except breath taking. She is such an elegant, powerful and proud performer commanding an immense stage presence. She starts to sing and you just find yourself drawn in, captivated and enchanted. I doubt a single member of the audience could have failed to have been moved by their version of ‘If I loved you’.

Throughout the night the show just seemed to go from strength to strength leaving you at the end of the night feeling uplifted and overjoyed. A truly spectacle evening. I urge any and everyone to go see the show if you get the chance.

At first one would think that Josh Groban is just another opera singer whose voice is slightly bigger than everyone else’s, but if you have ever seen him live, you would bite your tongue for having said anything of the kind.

Along with the majestic orchestra he usually has set up, the combination of instruments and his voice puts you in a state of emotional bliss. Wishing and wanting to be able to belt it out the way he does.

His albums, in no way, hint at his personality. Listening to his music, you would think he is quiet, reserved, deep and intelligent. Of which all could be true, however, at a live show Josh Groban shows another side, a louder, funnier, and charming side that you had no idea even existed. Running in to the crowd, singing happy birthday to those who deserve it and making a joke at every opportunity and mind you, the jokes are actually funny. Strangely enough by time the show ends you are left crying because ‘You Raise Me Up’ and ‘You are Loved’ hit you right in the spot, but crying even harder because you’re laughing at all the random things he keeps saying. Wonderful, his performances are simply wonderful.

I love listening to Josh Groban. At the concert I learned it does not really matter if I hear him through good speakers or live. At least not at this concert.

There was nothing wrong with the concert. He performed, but that was all. Somehow, I did not feel like he engaged the audience. He primarily looked off to his stage right, since I was sitting stage left, that was frustrating.

I don't really fault him, but I thing between the altitude and the tight concert schedule, he was just tired.

The photo shot was very brief. Later I learned other people had several photos taken, I had the standard 3 fast shutter clicks and out. Others had fun poses! I counted, only 80 people, total qualified for pictures, and extra 15 seconds with those who did not get the extras, would not have ruined his or anyone else's night, but would have made ours. I barely got to say hello and thank you.

No encore, he did not even come out for an extra bow.

Again, I love to listen to him. I have most of his albums. I think he is a great person, as I have watched and read interviews. I just wish he was feeling it MORE on Tuesday night.

Josh Groban is the operatic singer, turned multi-platinum pop singer with a really rather gigantic voice and a fanbase to match it. His following is rather extreme, often attending Groban's shows numerous times and following him on tour yet with his warm personality and impeccable sets you can begin to understand why.

His operatic and theatre influences are very apparent this evening as Josh stands at the helm of a complex setup featuring a huge number of instruments including harps, strings and percussion. These all add luxurious layers to the likes of 'False Alarms' which sounds so much more four dimensional than the recorded version. The crowd attempts to sing along but it seems rather futile as Josh hits the high notes of 'February Song' with his power chord vocal. He thanks the audience for their effort none the less and explains that their support it was keeps him touring at the gruelling pace he has become accustomed to. As he takes his final bows following a winning version of 'You Raise Me Up' the applause are rapturous for his class act.

Fantastic concert to a full house! Josh was on point and sang many songs from his new album, Stages, as well as a couple of Christmas favorites from his 2007 Christmas album, Noel. He invited Lena Hall to sing a duet with him twice, as well as showcase a couple of her own songs from her R&B/rock solo album. Josh was charming in his anecdotes and seemed genuinely happy to be there, following a canceled showing in October due to a 103-degree fever. I enjoyed the night immensely as a Groban fan and a showtunes lover!

This was an absolutely phenomenal concert. I saw him in May of 2011 and thoroughly enjoyed that concert, but there is something about maturity of the voice and person that becomes him. He sang songs from Stages, as well as a couple of other "easily recognizable" songs those of us Grobanites will remember. I could have not asked for better seats (third row, center stage) and a better concert. He was personable, humble, and sang beautifully. Thank you for a delightful evening, Josh Groban!

I thought that the show was FANTASTIC, I love anything that he sings. He put on a excellent show the singer before him was also excellent.

As soon as I heard he was going to be at Madison Gardens I asked my family if they would take me to see him because they know much love his singing. I have Parkinson's so they said that they would checked out about the Handicap section, and I have to say all the that helped were fantastic.

It was a fabulous night. My daughter and I are big fans of Josh Groban. Saw the great Comet of 1812 on Broadway three times all from different parts of the theater. We played his songs all the way back to the hotel and then from the hotel back to Brookline Massachusetts. His voice is just heavenly and we both can’t get enough of Josh. Look forward to many years of listening to his songs

Josh Groban concert review | Blossom Music Center | 06.29.22

Tim G Fenner

Josh Groban’ s latest album, ‘Harmony,’ his ninth studio effort, was released in 2020. His tour of the same name is finally on the road post-pandemic closures, and the tour’s namesake could not be more perfect. Fans anxiously awaited his onstage presence, flanked by his impressive backing orchestra. The crescendo from said orchestra started the evening off with Frank Sinatra’s “The World We Knew.” (Does anybody even remember the “world we knew” prior to March 2020?) The song set the tone for a lovely evening. Groban’s baritone voice is strong, smooth, and unmistakable. His second selection of the evening, “Shape of My Heart,” a cover of the classic song by Sting , was soft as Groban let the lyrics linger. Fans nestled in their seats in HARMONY with their loved ones; leaning on one another.

The Grammy-nominated singer (who has also tried his hand at producing records and acting) is known globally for his distinct voice and musical versatility. Groban can switch genres on a dime. Pop, classical, rock, show tunes, and everything in between…This guy’s voice can do it all! There is a reason this guy has sold more than 35 million records.

Groban performed many other covers on the evening, highlighted by Robbie Williams ’ “ Angels.” (His ‘shout out’ to Robbie drew quite the ovation from the crowd.)

A special treat on the evening came when Groban introduced Lucia Micarelli , a violinist in his backing orchestra, who played a classical solo that left the audience breathless. Micarelli understands how music should feel and is a true master of balancing pace and rhythm. She joined Groban for a performance of Joni Mitchell’s “Both Sides Now.” Her soft, airy, sultry voice added to the depth of the melody.

A comical moment to some (an annoyance to others) was when Josh was interrupted by a baby’s crying. He joked that he was impressed with the stamina of the young fan.

Groban shared stories, including one of how lucky he was to have both a piano and guitar in his home while growing up.  He explained that music can soothe the soul and, if you can give your child the gift of music, their world could be changed forever.

Groban’s hidden talent lies behind a drum kit. (What can’t this guy do?)  Roadies brought out a drum set to the delight of a cheering crowd. He did a call and response with the three other percussionists.

Groban continued with more covers (he performed 10 total on the evening) including Peter Gabriel’s “The Book of Love” and “Not While I’m Around, ” (composed by Steven Sondheim ).

josh groban world tour

His set concluded with his version of “You Raise Me Up,” the song that sprung Groban to the forefront of mainstream exposure. He would return for a one-song encore, a cover of Mitch Leigh’s “The Impossible Dream.”

Immediately prior to Groban’s set, Preservation Hall Jazz Band , who are fresh off a performance at Something in the Water Festival in Washington DC, where the band joined Dave Matthews Band for their set, took to the Blossom stage. The group is named after a New Orleans’ jazz club of the same name, that was founded in 1961 by Allan Jaffe .  Jaffe passed away in 1987 but his son, Ben Jaffe is a current member of this seven-piece band (down one member at Blossom on this evening).  PHJB was high-energy and received plenty of notice from the audience.

This evening’s stage was quite simple. No large video screens (except for the large left and right of stage monitors), fewer video cameras, and a more simply lit stage.  The audio quality was excellent.  The orchestra was accompanied by set drums (two of them, actually, and three when Groban joined with his) and a substantial stand-up bass.

Groban and the amazing orchestra put on an outstanding show tonight.  Josh said in a recent interview that “’ Harmony’ became something I just wanted to release because I just loved it.” Hey, Josh! We loved the “Harmony” tour, too.

Surprise! Michigan high school actors, Wharton chaperone attend Tony Awards in NYC

Ben English (right), community engagement and special projects coordinator for the Wharton Center, and Michigan’s Sutton Foster Awards winners Braeden Davis of Kalamazoo and Gretchen Shope of Midland, attended the dress rehearsal and live Tony Awards event in New York City on June 16, 2024.

There are perks to being a chaperone.

For Ben English, community engagement and special projects coordinator for the Wharton Center, chaperoning the two Sutton Foster Awards winners at the National High School Musical Theatre Awards (aka the Jimmy Awards) in New York landed him two big surprises and a chance to cross an item off his bucket list.

The first happened the morning of June 16, when Rachel Reiner, director of audience engagement at The Broadway League and the executive director of the Jimmy Awards, told the students and their chaperones that their scheduled “professional development” was a trip to the David H. Koch Theater at Lincoln Center to watch the dress rehearsal of the 77 th Annual Tony Awards.

“That may have literally been the coolest thing I’ve ever done,” English posted on Facebook. “So so thankful for these opportunities!”

Yet, hours after witnessing the dress rehearsal, he made another post about the second surprise of the day.

“Sorry just kidding, this is actually the coolest thing I've ever done.”

The coolest thing? Getting to attend the actual Tony Awards ceremony.

Joining him were Michigan’s Sutton Foster Awards winners Gretchen Shope of Midland and Braeden Davis of Kalamazoo. English said going to the Tony Awards was an opportunity for the young performers to see people at the top of their craft and to witness the emphasis on arts education throughout the night.

This year was the first time the Tony weekend has coincided with the Jimmy Awards. English said their agenda on Sunday morning called for professional development.

“In all of our meetings prior, it was very much like, we’re not exactly sure how long the professional development is going to take and it’s at a location that we’re going to,” English said. “We were like, this is weirdly unspecific, but we’ll roll with it.”

Then Reiner announced the participants were going to the dress rehearsal. In a video posted on Facebook, students were jumping up and down and shouting with glee.

“We’re all freaking out,” English said. “I didn’t even know that was a thing. We’re all just ecstatic. We go and it was amazing. It was so much fun to watch.”

English said the dress rehearsal closely mirrored the evening’s show, except, of course, winners were not announced. There were still a few surprises for the live event, such as the appearance of Hillary Clinton to introduce the performance of a number from “Suffs,” a musical about the women's suffrage movement.

“You cannot post anything about the content of what you saw because we don’t want to spoil it for everyone, right?” English said. “We knew that Alicia Keys and Jay Z were going to be there, but we couldn’t say.”

The 102 Jimmy nominees and 30-some chaperones sat in the fourth ring, the highest balcony at the theater.

Once they left the rehearsal, they thought their day was mostly done outside of a few rehearsals for the Jimmy Awards and the planned Tony Awards party.

But there was more to come.

The students and chaperones were called into a rehearsal room, ostensibly for a chat with the choreographers. Reiner had another announcement.

“The way she phrased it was, ‘I promised you the best Tony Awards party ever — and you’re actually going to the Tony Awards,’” English said. “I’m a little speechless still. It was a bucket list item that I never thought I’d really get to cross off my list. It was pretty phenomenal.”

They were once again seated in the fourth ring, but this time they were in Row C and surrounded by people involved with the nominated shows.

English said he had not seen any of the nominated shows on Broadway, so the musical performances were a highlight of the show as was getting to see such actors as Jonathan Groff, Daniel Radcliffe and Lindsay Mendez performing a number from “Merrily We Roll Along.”

However, he said what really put the night over the top was the environment and the speeches that the winners gave.

“The love and the support of the theater community is unmatched in my opinion, and it’s so affirming to be in a group of people that just want to make the world better through the arts,” English said. “I love that and it was really wonderful to be able to experience it.”

The 15th annual Jimmy Awards, the reason Shope, Davis and English were in New York, will be streamed at 7:30 p.m. June 24 on YouTube and Facebook. Josh Groban is hosting the show.

SNYDE | Mel Brooks making ‘Spaceballs’ sequel starring Josh Gad

Mel Brooks and Josh Gad attend the "Spaceballs" screening during the 2024 TCM Classic Film Festival at TCL Chinese Theatre on April 21, 2024 in Hollywood, Calif. (Photo by Presley Ann/Getty Images for TCM)

Brooks and Gad are producing the movie for Amazon MGM Studios based on a screenplay by Gad and “Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayhem” writers Benji Samit and Dan Hernandez.

Josh Greenbaum (“Barb and Star Go to Vista Del Mar”) will direct.

No other casting information was announced.

“My phone has never exploded as hard as it did today,” Gad captioned an Instagram post about the news . “We are very excited! Early days still, but working with the legendary Mel freaking Brooks to make something worthy of this franchise and his legacy has been a dream come true. … We are doing everything in our power alongside Mel to make sure you get what you’ve waited 37 long years for. EVERYTHING 🚀 #maytheschwartzbewithyou”

Gad teased his excitement about an upcoming project in another Instagram post several weeks ago.

“Just handed in a film script that I think may be the funniest and best thing I’ve ever worked on and I am so freaking excited,” Gad captioned a photo of a redacted script cover page.

Plot details are being kept under wraps but the amount of “Star Wars” and other sci-fi material available to satirize has only grown since Brooks’ first parody movie.

The original “Spaceballs” — which was released in theaters 37 years ago, and 10 years after “Star Wars” — starred Brooks, Bill Pullman, John Candy, Daphne Zuniga, Joan Rivers, Rick Moranis and Dick Van Patten. A minor box office hit at the time, it gained cult status on home video and as a staple of cable TV.

The new project marks the second sequel Brooks has been involved with in recent years after producing 2023’s “History of the World: Part II,” a follow-up to 1981’s “History of the World: Part I.” That sequel was released on Hulu.

Brooks also received the Career Achievement Award at the Peabody Awards earlier this month.
