Jenny Lewis – full name Jennifer Diane Lewis – is a singer-songwriter from Las Vegas, Nevada, US. She was the primary vocalist of now defunct indie rock band Rilo Kiley before embarking on a successful solo career.

Born on January 8th 1976, Lewis started her professional career as an actress - her first role was in a Jell-O commercial! She went on to act in small roles on TV shows including Baywatch and The Golden Girls, and starred in many made-for-TV teen movies. Deciding that music was her true passion, Lewis formed indie band Rilo Kiley in 1998 with her friends Pierre De Reeder, Dave Rock and Blake Sennett. The band gained the attention of Warner Bros records who signed them for the release of their debut album “More Adventurous”, which was released in 2004. One of the more well-known songs on the album is “Portions for Foxes” which was a big hit for the band. Rilo Kiley’s second album “Under the Blacklight” was released in 2007, however four years later in July 2011, the band announced their split.

Lewis had been working on solo material whilst she was in Rilo Kiley and in 2004 she was invited by Conor Oberst (of the band Bright Eyes) to record a solo album on his record label Team Love. Her debut solo album “Rabbit Fur Coat” was released in January 2006 and showcased a different kind of sound for Lewis – she described the album herself as “a kind of soul record”. The album featured many guest appearances and contributions from other musicians, including Oberst, M Ward, James Valentine (guitarist of Maroon 5) and Ben Gibbard of Death Cab for Cutie.

Lewis also collaborated with The Watson Twins, who provided accompaniment and toured with Lewis in support of her album three times in 2006. The twins also appeared with her band on several live TV appearances, including Late Show with David Letterman and Later with Jools Holland. Lewis’ second album “Acid Tongue” (released in 2008) was however Watson Twin-free.

Lewis’ third album “The Voyager” was released in 2014. The album took five years to complete and is a personal reflection on the break up Rilo Kiley and her father’s death. The lead single from the album “Just One of the Guys” was accompanied by a star-studded video, with appearances from Anne Hathaway, Kristen Stewart, Brie Larson and Tennessee Thomas.

As well as performing in Rilo Kiley and as a solo artist, Lewis performs as part of a duo with her boyfriend Johnathan Rice, under the apt name of Jenny and Johnny. The pair released their first single together in 2010 entitled “Scissor Runner”, followed by their album “I’m Having Fun Now”.

Lewis has played at festivals such as the Newport Folk Festival, Lollapalooza, Outside Lands Music and Arts Festival, the 2014 iTunes Festival in London and at the Austin City Limits Music Festival. She was also the supporting act for Snow Patrol in 2009, also appearing at V Festival in Australia that same year. One of her most notable collaborations is with Brandon Flowers (of The Killers) on his 2010 album “Flamingo”, where she lend her vocals on the song “Hard Enough”. Most recently in 2014, Lewis collaborated with Rostam Batmanglij of Vampire Weekend on an exclusive track for TV network HBO, to be used on the programme “Girls”. The track is titled “Completely Not Me” and was featured in the Season 3 premiere of the show. It’s safe to say that Jenny Lewis is one busy bee!

Live reviews

Having been a fan of Jenny Lewis/Rilo Kiley for seven years now, and with nine great albums to her name, was i ever going to be disappointed with seeing her live for the first time? Very probably not. Was she better than i expected? Yes i think she was! Have been listening to her new album, The Voyager, a lot recently, and while maybe not quite as good as the first three Rilo Kiley albums, is still an excellent pop/rock album. Plenty of great songs, lots of hooks and as ever great story telling.

The gig was sold out, and the small venue tightly packed which always helps create a good atmosphere. I wasn't sure what to expect from the gig, would it just be songs from her solo albums? She answered that question with the first song, an excellent version of Rilo Kiley's Silver Lining, my night was made already. The band split years ago and i had given up hope of ever hearing any of their stuff live. From then on it was great song after great song, most of the new album, songs from the other two solo albums, and a few Rilo Kiley classics too. Highlights for me Slippery Slopes from the new album and Rise Up With Fists. Her band played and looked great all in white, and Jenny's voice was spot on. They went off after just over an hour of great music. The encore was pretty special for me, a great version of With Arms Outstretched, a Rilo favourite of mine, followed by the great Acid Tongue, and the latest single She's Not Me.All in all a great gig, and 90 mins of music heaven for me.

If you haven't listened to or seen Jenny Lewis live, do your ears a massive favour and do so!!

Jenny Lewis has an amazing voice that can hold an entire crowd in suspense during her great hits like "Happy" and "You Are What You Love". We were all captivated by her stories and the way she portrayed the emotions in each and every one of her songs.

I loved her on the piano especially during Godspeed! She is so talented in so many ways, but I really appreciate her dedication to writing beautiful melodies to accent her natural singing. She even played a few songs from her time singing for Rilo Kiley. The band was great as well, with tons of awesome backup instruments that you don't really see in many sets these days. They didn't overdo any of the songs with production or synthetic sounds, offering a great, pure folk experience.

Jenny Lewis really knows how to accent her guitar chords with beautiful chimes and bass lines. There weren't too many special effects at the show, but there was a good light show that went along with the music. The focus was really on Jenny, though, and her great solo work. The crowd was very polite so we could really enjoy this once-in-a-lifetime experience. I definitely recommend seeing her live, you'll love her!

I have been a fan since before her solo career, the Rilo Kiley days. This was the second time I have seen her live and hopefully there will be a third.

The opening act, while comically bad, said Jenny Lewis may be the bridge between creatively genuine indie music and the compromised world of pop. It might be a little sanctimonious but it might be right. Her style has grown and broadened with non-threatening complex music supporting her relatable yet emotionally relevant lyrics. And she is just fun, fun to listen to and fun to watch. She still enjoys what she does.

Her set included a whimsical design and a setlist that pleased her old and new fans. Her banter was good but I personally could have used a little more. It was sparse. She played a great encore set but I was left still wanting more.

In short, go see her at least once. You won't regret.

Incredible show. The staging of an entire album isn't something I've seen done before and was cool but I would've preferred some history/background/insight into how they came together as a group or how a certain song came about peppered through that part of the performance. The second half was great and full of audience interaction. She had the whole place under a spell with her voice. Shout out too to her band which were chameleons with her and totally rocked!

EZTV was perfectly adequate but instantly forgettable.

She never disappoints! Always an amazing, fine-tuned performance. She mixes up the song choice and figures out new ways to perform each with idiosyncratic harmonies and pitch changes as well as updating some lyrics for a fun, cheeky wink. Great to see her with The Watson Twins and M. Ward, and looking forward to her new music that we got a little taste of. If she can sell out 3 nights at The Beacon maybe they should consider Madison Square next!

Jenny Lewis was everything I'd hoped for and more! I've been a fan for years, but was never able to get to a show. After moving to LA, I got to see her at The Wiltern in her home town. Her voice was flawless, even better live. This was a fantastic show to be my first, because she brought Nate out to do A Man/Me/Then Jim. So perfect! And Tig Notaro opened with a short set.

Can't wait to see her again!

Jenny Lewis killed it in SLC! I've wanted to see her for years, and this show was well worth the wait. She played a lot of popular older stuff from her Rilo Kiley days, as well as some new stuff from her new band, NAF and from her Voyager album. Every song was beautiful, she absolutely rocked. I'd go see her again in a heartbeat.

An amazing performance! The musicianship was tight and the performance was engaging. Older favorites were intertwined into the new album - giving everyone a little bit of what they were looking for. My 16-year-old son wasn't familiar with Lewis but is now a lifelong fan after this great show.

Always amazing seeing Jenny Lewis live! Lots from the new album and lots of reworked versions of classic tracks from her solo career and a few gems from the Rilo Kiley days. Fun stage banter and tight as hell band. Don’t think about it - go see Jenny Lewis and enjoy.

As anticipated the show was SO good. Her voice is amazing and she looked beautiful. The audience was very into it - singing along. Would have loved to have heard a bit more Rilo Kiley or older Jenny Lewis, maybe even some new N.A.F. but overall a great show! Love her!

Jenny Lewis

It’s hard to believe that Jenny Lewis has been an indie rock mainstay for almost 25 years. She first burst onto the scene as lead singer and guitarist of Rilo Kiley, and since the release of their debut EP in 1999, she’s been dashing through genres and writing songs about love and heartbreak.

Popular on Variety

Meanwhile, Lewis was all smiles throughout the set, clearly thrilled to be sharing her new style with fans. Far removed from the jittery intensity of her early performances with Rilo Kiley, the singer spent most of her time dancing and singing on an elevated platform in a biker-vibe jumpsuit. Grinning her way through poison-kissed lyrics like “He took me to a graveyard / I thought he’d kill me there / And he kissed me on the corner / While the nuns of Harlem stared,” Lewis’ heart was clearly full while playing material in her onetime home of New York City.

“There’s no crying in rock ‘n’ roll,” Lewis quipped during one one happy tears moment, remixing the “League of Their Own” quote to show her appreciation that fans were still connecting with her songs. And even though she brought many fans to their own emotional apex during the encore with the sole Rilo Kiley song of the night— the singalong classic “With Arms Outstretched” — her music, past and future, left everyone smiling.

Jenny Lewis Starts Over

By Jonah Weiner

Jonah Weiner

There are 19 white stickers arranged across Jenny Lewis ’ fridge. Each one carries a stamped date, the logo of Providence Holy Cross Medical Center, the word VISITOR and, in Lewis’ handwriting, a different beguiling little phrase: I taught him how to 2-step ; Rosey posey put your snake finger on ; You are a sunshine in a fruit . “Every day that I visited my mom in the hospital,” Lewis says, “I’d get one of these and write down something she’d say to me. She got more and more psychedelic as we kept upping the meds, and she’d say the most amazing things.” Lewis points at one — Glue me to the ceiling so you never leave — and sighs. “She had liver cancer. From untreated hepatitis C. She was a lifelong heroin addict and also mentally ill and . . . just a really sad situation.”

It’s a drizzly evening in early January, and Lewis is at her home in Los Angeles, drinking gamay wine and discussing things she’s never discussed publicly before. Some listeners over the years may have noticed scattered allusions in her songs to her mother’s troubles and the painful outlines of their relationship. In 2002, on an early album by her first band, Rilo Kiley , she described a mother who was “insane and high.” In 2006, on her debut solo album, Rabbit Fur Coat , she sang, “Where my ma is now, I don’t know/She was living in her car, I was living on the road/And I hear she’s putting that stuff up her nose.” But Lewis has always been careful to let these lyrics speak mostly for themselves. When people ask about them, she’s frequently emphasized that the line between memoir and fiction in her songwriting is a slippery one. “Sometimes I don’t even remember what actually happened,” she says now, “and the song takes on its own life.”

On Lewis’ new record, On the Line , her mother appears again. This time she is in a hospital bed “under a cold white sheet,” and there’s no fiction at work. The earliest sticker on the fridge is dated August 20th, 2017, and by the end of October, at age 70, Linda Lewis was dead.

Editor’s picks

Every awful thing trump has promised to do in a second term, the 250 greatest guitarists of all time, the 500 greatest albums of all time, the 50 worst decisions in movie history.

“We were estranged for 20 years, so this was the first time we’d hung out in two decades,” the 43-year-old singer-songwriter continues. “She was very sick, but I think she held on so we could have time to reconcile, and it created an opportunity for forgiveness. She didn’t have to say, ‘I’m so sorry’ —she said it by saying, ‘You’re a sunshine in a fruit.’ That was her way of saying ‘I love you.’ ”

Lewis started out as a kid actor, appearing on Eighties-era sitcoms like Life With Lucy , opposite Lucille Ball, and in movies like Troop Beverly Hills and The Wizard , opposite Fred Savage. By her twenties she’d all but quit acting and become a burgeoning indie-rock icon instead, known for her clarion voice, her killer ear for melody and her knack for evocative storytelling in a tweaked Americana style. Whereas Lewis’ last musical project, an ad hoc collaboration from 2016 called Nice as Fuck , was stripped down and upbeat, On the Line contains the most lush and melancholy music she’s ever made. The album has a grand rock sound — stately pianos, swelling strings, fuzzy electric guitar. Lewis cut its 11 songs at the venerable Capitol Studios in L.A. over just a few days last year, but she began writing them in this house in 2014, not long before her 12-year relationship with the Scottish-American musician Johnathan Rice deteriorated. She finished writing them after her bedside reconciliation with her mom.

Lewis gives the fridge a final look before turning out of the kitchen. “I wonder how long I’ll leave these up here,” she says.

Addiction, sobriety and self‑medication are running themes throughout On the Line . There are references to red wine, weed, grenadine, heroin, bourbon, Paxil, Marlboros, cognac, Candy Crush and, on the song “Party Clown,” a hallucinogenic Fuji apple. “Somehow I think the worst one of them all is Candy Crush,” Lewis says with a grin. “My mom started taking heroin when I was two or three, probably. So, growing up like that, there’s a realization that nothing is for free, and everything catches up with you — if you try to numb out, eventually you’re gonna have to face whatever it is you’re running away from.” She pauses. “I don’t have any judgment about it. Even with my mom: She did whatever she had to do, and she wasn’t able to kick it. Most people don’t make it out of heroin addiction. I don’t really blame her for it.”

Jenny Lewis' Joy'All Ball Tour Will Return to North America in 2024

Bts, sam smith with madonna, janelle monáe, and all the songs you need to know this week, jenny lewis captures the essence of life on 'joy'all'.

Wine in hand, wearing a satiny cowgirl shirt and a bandanna tied around her neck that’s nearly the same shade of red as her hair, Lewis shows me around the house. Situated near leafy Laurel Canyon, it was built by a Disney animator in the Forties, and his touch is everywhere — delicate, hand-painted flowers on a wall here, trompe l’oeil flagstones on the floor there. In the living room a projector is playing the X-rated 1968 film The Girl on a Motorcycle , which stars Marianne Faithfull and is alternatively titled Naked Under Leather . Lewis has been on a leather kick recently, she says, showing me a photo-heavy 1977 book called Hard Corps: Studies in Leather and Sadomasochism that she recently scored on eBay. “I keep my whips and chains out in the pool house,” she says with a cackle.

Off the living room is the wood-paneled chamber where Lewis rehearses and writes. There’s a drum kit, a Wurlitzer organ and a little gas stove in the corner. Outside, near the pool, there’s a koi pond and a rose garden, all of it put in by the animator. Down the hall, there’s a roller-derby-themed pinball machine from around 1990 that periodically flashes the words WINNERS DON’T DO DRUGS in LED lights. Opposite the pinball is an enormous old promotional cutout for The Wizard , depicting Savage as an adolescent wearing a Nintendo Power Glove and an adolescent Lewis in acid-washed denim overalls. “This was at the movie theater in Van Nuys where I grew up — my mom made me go in and ask for it,” Lewis says. “My sister had it in storage, then had it framed for me and rented a truck to bring it over here. I wasn’t OK with this for many years, because early on in the history of my band, people would yell video-game references at me from the crowd. Now I just can’t believe that this is part of my weird story.”

She says she loved being on Hollywood sets as a kid, for complicated reasons. “I guess I liked being in that environment because it wasn’t home — it was this pretend-family vibe. My dad wasn’t around, so every time I got a job I kind of fell in love with ‘my father’ on set. I would just want that relationship.” (Her real-life dad, a musician named Eddie Gordon, was absent for most of her life, though he came back into Lewis’ orbit shortly before his own death, playing harmonica on her second solo album, 2008’s Acid Tongue .) Lewis’ off-set life in that era was consistently chaotic: “I think my mother was selling coke in the early Eighties,” she says. “She may have been Ricky Nelson’s dealer. And she was using the money I was making and parlaying it into her business. I’d come home from school and there’d be racks of fur coats, Krugerrands, boxes of Vuarnet sunglasses. All these bulk items in the house, drugs cooking on the stove, people coming in and out. Really interesting characters. I remember we had a Honda Civic, and one day it disappeared. Years later, I learned that someone had torched it as a warning to my mom. There was crazy shit going on.”

Lewis says that her elder sister, Leslie, became something like a proxy mother to her in their actual mother’s stead, and when Jenny co-founded Rilo Kiley with some L.A. buddies in the late Nineties, “that was my first chosen family.” Over the years she’d host jam sessions at home, inviting over members of like-minded acts such as Haim, Dawes and Conor Oberst, here and elsewhere in L.A. “I’ve always brought that jam vibe with me wherever I go,” Lewis says. “I feel compelled to play music, to play with people, or I’ll go crazy.”

In 2015, having split up with Rice for reasons we don’t get into, Lewis went to New York, crashing at the empty apartment of her friend Annie Clark, a.k.a. St. Vincent. “I couldn’t stay in this house,” Lewis says. “Johnathan and I were basically married. When you’re with someone that long, you share consciousness with them. I didn’t finish any of my stories — Johnathan finished every story for me. So part of the reason I went to New York was to find my inner monologue. I wanted to know what that voice was.”

The result, some three years later, is On the Line . Lewis made it with a particularly impressive surrogate family whose members included not only Beck and Ryan Adams, with whom she’d worked before, but also an older generation of studio pros: Rolling Stones producer Don Was, Heartbreakers keyboardist Benmont Tench, session drummer Jim Keltner (sideman for John Lennon, Bob Dylan and Steely Dan) and — to her delight and surprise — Ringo Starr. “He was cool — he just showed up one day with a smoothie and did double-drums with Jim on two songs,” Lewis says, adding that she’s not totally sure why the former Beatle came aboard. “I think Don Was showed him some of the songs, invited him to come down, and he was into it.”

[Editors’ note: This story went to press before the February 13th publication of a New York Times report on accusations of sexual misconduct by Ryan Adams. In a February 15th tweet , Lewis made the following statement: “I am deeply troubled by Ryan Adams’ alleged behavior. Although he and I had a working professional relationship, I stand in solidarity with the women who have come forward.”]

A decade-plus into her solo career, Lewis found herself trying new things in the studio. Keeping things spontaneous was a priority: She recorded all her vocal tracks live while playing her instruments, rather than tracking them in later. When Beck inserted a bit of placeholder Auto-Tune on a song called “Little White Dove,” Lewis decided she loved it and kept it in unchanged. (It reminded her of the Detroit rapper DeJ Loaf, whose single “Try Me” Lewis adores.) When it came to mixing, she says she took inspiration from Kanye West’s Ye — clearing out the midrange, focusing on the low end and the highs.

She sits on an oversize armchair in her living room and looks around the house. These days she splits time between L.A. and Nashville, where she jams with a whole other group of friends, including Karen Elson. Three years since her breakup, Lewis says, “I know how to take care of myself. It’s been really lonely, and really hard at times, and to go through the stuff with my mom alone—”

She starts to cry, untying her neckerchief and using it to blot her tears. “This is why I wear a bandanna,” she jokes. “But that’s the thing: I had to visit her, then come home and be alone and process my life with her.”

On the wall in front of her, Marianne Faithfull is making love to Alain Delon, but Lewis isn’t paying attention. “Life is crazy, but it’s incredible,” she goes on. “How amazing to see someone pass over. It’s magical. It’s the most intimate. It’s like a poem, and you don’t know the last line until you get there. But you show up.”

Jenny Lewis on The Postal Service, Touring with Ben Gibbard and LP ‘Joy’All’

by Jacob Uitti October 2, 2023, 10:00 am

Growing up, Jenny Lewis wanted to be a rapper. Born into a musical family, with parents who were musicians and vaudeville performers, Lewis found music early on. “[It] was the family hustle,” she tells American Songwriter.

Videos by American Songwriter

Lewis was discovered at three years old by a talent agent who saw her in a restaurant. Then, it was Lewis’ charisma and acting ability that became the family hustle. But at ten years old, she began writing raps and then poetry. She liked words and lyrics. She got a Casio keyboard next and started plunking away on that. As a teenager, she got an acoustic guitar and learned a few chords from a Beatles songbook.

Today, Lewis is a beloved indie rocker and she’s currently on tour with her group The Postal Service , which is celebrating the 20 th anniversary of their iconic LP, Give Up . For Lewis, who recently played Madison Square Garden as part of the trek, the tour is the culmination of a life of work.

“I learned a lot about work ethic being a child on a movie set,” says Lewis from the road. “And listening and taking direction and method. So, I apply the techniques I learned as a kid onstage every night on this tour.”

Going between gigs at MSG or Seattle’s giant Climate Pledge Arena, Lewis tries during every show to be in the moment, to “find the authentic feeling every night” and engage in the emotion of whatever song is at hand. What’s interesting for her when it comes to The Postal Service, though, is that it’s not a project she works with monthly or yearly. The Postal Service was something of a side project for her, singer Ben Gibbard (of Death Cab for Cutie) and Jimmy Tamborello. Since Give Up was released 20 years ago, it’s a collection of songs Lewis connects with after big chunks of time have passed (the 10-year anniversary and now the 20 th ). It’s like a frozen moment she can return to at different stages in life. “I’m living in the past and the present at the same time,” Lewis says.

These days, Lewis says she is more and more comfortable addressing the crowd. Her “favorite thing” about the gigs is making a giant room full of people laugh. “If I make them chuckle,” she notes, “I’ve succeeded.” But some nights she’s “too shy” to be a comedian. Nevertheless, levity and keen writing have always been part of Lewis’ charm and oeuvre. Even when there’s a bit of darkness below the surface. Like with her former band Rilo Kiley and Lewis’ standout single with the group, “A Better Son/Daughter,” which is both charming and devastating, and about the difficulties of family dynamics.

“I wrote that song outside of our practice space on an old envelope, a telephone bill,” Lewis says. “That was a poem. And then when I walked in, we put it to music. So, that was just the realist thing in that moment. I was late to practice [that day] because I had to get it out on that envelope.”

As a songwriter, Lewis says she has hundreds or even thousands of voice memos on her phone. But when she digs into the work, she often writes with pens, paper and a guitar. For her latest solo LP, Joy’ALL , which was released this summer and was produced by Dave Cobb, Lewis took inspiration from ’90s music like Sade for her standout song, “Giddy Up.” She also drew from the mellow Laurel Canyon sound. Some of the songs on the record were even inspired by a virtual songwriting camp held by Beck in 2021 during the pandemic. Beck would give those in the “camp” prompts and Lewis would write new work based on those. In fact, that time provided Lewis a profound shift in her life, she said.

“I spent the quarantine by myself,” she says, “which was the first time that I had slowed down since I was a kid, aside from one health thing I had 10 years prior. So it was a big moment for me to re-center. When you live on the road like my father did, who was not around for the three families he started, you really neglect your relationships and your health.”

Lewis knows she’s sacrificed a lot to be a touring artist. As a result, many of her songs are about relationships. Those that worked, those that didn’t and the various ripples afterwards. On the new album, she writes about family, romance, “ psychopaths ,” her truck and her dog. For someone who has been involved in Hollywood and its glitz and glamor, the album is subtle and personal. It’s the mark of a writer, not just a performer. And that’s something that Lewis supremely values about herself. She comes from a family of performers, all of whom were relatively poor—what she calls “working class showbiz.” But Lewis is more than that. With a pen, she can take control of her future. “I’m the first writer in a long line of performers, players and musicians,” she says.

Both her father and mother spent time in prison, as did he grandfather. The story of her family, she says, “is wild.” She calls her family “carnies,” in some respects. There is material for days, years. Even “Better Son/Daughter” was plucked from a personal exchange with her mom. But even with all this success, Lewis enjoys a life of mostly anonymity (except when she’s in Whole Foods, she says). So, she gets to live the best of both worlds. She can express herself, play at MSG and then go to the corner store with no real issue. It’s a good life, especially for someone who lives in the moment. “I don’t really think more than three days ahead,” Lewis says.

Yet, she is already working on new songs. Lewis says she is constantly writing music and today she has about four songs she’s “chipping into existence.” She’s also keeping present while she plays some of the biggest venues in the world, knowing this is the climax of a life at work. As for her and The Postal Service, the band is like family. She says they’re like siblings, though she does call Gibbard “dad.” The members are honest with one another. There is “a lot of respect, a lot of love.” It’s a band that doesn’t have to be a band, in the traditional sense. Instead, they can parachute in together, jam out, and then go back to their lives. In the end, though, all of this is born out of Lewis’ love of music and the joy it’s brought her.

“Writing it,” says Lewis when asked what she loves most about the art form. “You can say a lot in a song. If you sit down to write a novel, there’s a lot of words there. But you can really express a feeling and tell a concise story in a short amount of time [with a song], like two-and-a-half minutes. They’re like little short stories.”

Jenny Lewis Has 'No Regrets' About Leaving Acting Behind to Pursue Music

Jenny Lewis was one of Hollywood's most beloved young actresses in the '80s and '90s, but she left it all behind to pursue music - and hasn't looked back since.

In an exclusive interview with Us Weekly to promote her upcoming Joy'All Ball tour, Lewis, 48, dished on having the courage to follow her dreams. "I retired from acting when I was 19. [Acting] was something that was more of the family business rather than my choice," the "Psychos" singer explained. "Music is my choice - and something I pursued because I'm totally passionate about it."

Lewis, who appeared in countless titles including The Wizard and Life With Lucy , looks back at her time in showbiz fondly. "It was wonderful and it was also very challenging," she said. "I met some interesting people along the way."

‘Troop Beverly Hills' Cast: Where Are They Now?

"For the most part, everyone was great. I had a hundred mentors, including Lucille Ball , Betty White , Rue McClanahan and Shelley Long ," Lewis continued. "Then I had all of these men who played my father. My dad left when I was a kid - I didn't know my dad - so I had all these proxy dads that I got to learn from, David Strathairn and Griffin Dunne and all of these amazing people, and that informed me as an artist."

Of course, there was a dark side to Hollywood that Lewis was lucky enough to avoid. "Watching the Nickelodeon documentary [ Quiet on Set ] [was] horrifying, and that stuff was going on too," she told Us . "I was fortunate in that I was somehow shielded from some of that stuff, but I was certainly around a lot of those people."

Lewis crossed paths with one of the people featured Quiet on Set , although she didn't name names. "I was definitely in the room with one of the guys who's in that documentary, who went to prison," she explained. "It was a dangerous environment if you didn't have someone looking out for you. Luckily, I had all of these sparkly, amazing people who really cared about me and really believed in me."

Every Nickelodeon Star Who Has Reacted to Explosive 'Quiet on Set' Doc

For those who grew up in the '90s, Lewis is most recognizable for her role as Hannah Nefler in Troop Beverly Hills . "As with all of those memories from that time, they're a little bit patchy," the musician explained of the 1989 family comedy, noting she no longer speaks to the cast, but remembers Long, who played her character's mother Phyllis, as being "great."

One of Lewis' most distinct memories from that time involves being on the soundstage at Universal Studios. "The interiors of the mansion that [the characters] lived in, they were all on the soundstage, and when they would film on one, the other would go dark," she explained. "So I would go into the Nefler bedroom and do handstands up against the wall. That's what you did when you were 12."

As longtime fans know, Lewis' post-acting career includes founding Rilo Kiley, playing in multiple bands, including The Postal Service, and embarking on a solo career. On June 18, she'll head back on the road for the Joy'All Ball tour, where she'll make stops in Lexington, Birmingham and more.

"You really sacrifice a lot of relationships along the way because you're just out in the world, or even the relationship with your own garden - I never get to see my peonies bloom," she explained of being a working musician. "There are a lot of things that you prioritize [like] your tours. You make a commitment sometimes a year in advance and show up for that commitment, life aside. That can be challenging, but ultimately, worth it, if you're a road dog."

Musicians Who Became Actors: Jack Harlow, Jennifer Lopez and More

"Through all the ups and downs," Lewis continued, "[music] has been what I want to do the most."

With such a well-rounded career, it's hard to narrow down her proudest moment - but one sticks out in particular. "Leaving my career as an actor behind at 19, because no one advised me to do that," she shared. "Everyone was upset with me and said I would regret it."

"No regrets. I just feel so proud of that kid who made this choice to pursue art and poetry," the "Puppy and a Truck" singer told Us . "Honestly, my only regret is getting rid of my '64 Malibu."

Still, that doesn't mean Lewis, who is working on a screenplay, is opposed to returning to the film industry. "I'm open," she shared. "If something came up that was cool, I'd definitely consider it."

In April, it was announced that the tour had been rebranded from the “This Is Me…Now” tour to  “This Is Me…Live/The Greatest Hits,” which the hope that familiar material would goose ticket sales.
