Getting through the gate: JBAB Joint Visitor Center procedures
District of columbia, united states, story by jason treffry , joint base anacostia-bolling.
The holidays are here and that often means traveling to visit loved ones. The Joint Base Anacostia-Bolling Joint Visitor Center encourages the JBAB community to stay informed of visiting procedures to prevent delays and allow more time spent with friends and family. “We are the subject matter experts and representatives for all situations that have to deal with installation access,” said U.S. Air Force Tech. Sgt. Quenton Howard, 11th Wing Security Forces Squadron JVC NCO in charge. “We owe it to our mission partners that have worldwide missions and our base population that have entrusted us to safeguard their families to ensure we remain compliant with laws and regulations.” Howard provided common procedures to remember, and avoid, if JBAB residents wish to bring any non-Department of Defense ID card holders on base. All active-duty service members and authorized dependents ages 18 and older are automatically given sponsorship privileges upon receiving their DOD ID card. Civilian employees are not automatically given this authorization, unless done so during their hiring process. Those who wish to obtain this authorization may apply through their organization’s leadership in partnership with the Military Personnel Flight. Individuals may visit the MPF located in Bldg. 16 or call at 202-284-3123 for details. Visitors may gain access to JBAB through the South Gate, open 24 hours a day, located at the corner of Overlook avenue and Chappie James boulevard. Sponsors must be present with their visitor when entering the gate during non-duty hours. Visitors will be granted a temporary pass valid until the next JVC operating hours. At that time, the visitor will be required to enter the JVC to complete a Form 5512, mandatory to receive base access for the desired length of visitation. If visitors enter the South Gate during duty hours and are not accompanied by their sponsor, they will need to provide their sponsor’s full name, DOD ID number and phone number. After the 11th SFS entry controller communicates with the sponsor, the visitor will then proceed immediately to the JVC to complete a Form 5512. Form 5512 is a document tailored to gather visitors’ information and to identify any safety concerns to SFS personnel. Base access denial is often due to but not limited to violent and sexual crimes which must be entered on the document. All sponsors wishing to bring Foreign Nationals on base must submit a Form 5512 to the JVC, for each visitor, at least 30 days in advance. Foreign Nationals visiting without approval and appropriate notice will be denied. 11th SFS follows Air Force Office of Special Investigations policy regarding Foreign National visitors. Howard emphasized the importance of contacting the JVC with questions as far in advance as possible. “Regardless of rank, duty status, military or civilian, I always aim for my team to treat everyone with the utmost respect,” said Howard. “That way we present knowledge and a good image to our mission partners, base residents and local community.” For more information on base access qualifications and processes, email the JVC team at [email protected] or call the main desk at 202-284-3555 during their hours of operation: Monday through Friday 5 a.m. to 4 p.m. During non-duty hours, visitors may call the Base Defense Operations Center, open 24 hours a day, at 202-767-5000. The JVC is closed on Saturdays and Sundays, federal holidays and Air Force District of Washington down days and family days.
