The Dunn’s River Falls Park and the setting are genuinely breathtaking, and the incredible cascading falls challenge, refresh and delight visitors of all ages.
Your Dunn’s River Falls excursion from Falmouth begins with a 1.5 hr journey along Jamaica’s Golden Coast to Ocho Rios. Along the way, you can take in the beautiful scenery and get a chance to pass through many towns and villages, and experience Jamaica first-hand. With the new Highway from Montego Bay to Ocho Rios complete, this is a much safer, quicker, and enjoyable drive.
Upon arrival at Dunn’s River Falls, you will follow a path and stairway that leads down to the base of the falls. For those who wish to climb the beautiful falls, this is where your adventure begins. However, the views and spectacular sights are worth the trip alone for those not up to climbing the falls.
Water shoes/sandals are required and are available for rent if you do not bring your own. Depending on your ability and comfort level, you may climb the falls with or without a guide. This is a challenging climb, but your Dunn’s River Guides are excellent and will give you all the support and confidence you will need to accomplish this journey.
There are also several points along the adjoining path where you can easily access the river and enjoy the cool water and pulsating flow of cascading water over your body without climbing.
Enjoy an exhilarating massage from Mother Nature. The climb to the top can take up to 1 hour. Along the way, there are several photographers available to capture this special moment for you.
From Dunn’s River Falls, your guide will take you on a brief tour of Ocho Rio’s spectacular countryside, where you can take in the sights as you drive through Fern Gully, a beautiful rainforest abundant in plant life. Enjoy panoramic views of the town and your cruise ship port before returning to the city for a shopping tour.
Your Falmouth Dunn’s River Falls excursion culminates with shopping in the heart of Ocho Rios, where you will have the opportunity to explore the local craft markets or indulge in the shopping centers and their duty-free offerings.
If time allows, you may even wish to visit Jimmy Buffett’s Margaritaville Bar and Restaurant, an Ocho Rios favorite.

Top 5 jamaican waterfalls.
Jamaica is a tropical paradise known for its amazing white sand beaches and turquoise sea lapping its shores. But the “land of wood and water” boasts cool, crystal waterfalls further inland that often spill out on to the sands along the coastline. It’s hard to choose among the many well-known spots and secret hideaways, but we thought we’d share the Top 5 most inviting waterfalls in Jamaica that are sure to be a highlight of your tropical vacation. Stunning Jamaican waterfalls await you deep in the heart of the island!!
Mayfield Falls Mayfield Falls is nature lover and eco-traveller’s dream. A scenic drive only 1-hour west from Negril, 1½-hours from Montego Bay, and only a ½-hour from Lucea. Centrally located in Glenbrook, Westmoreland, where the Dolphin Head Mountains provide a picture-perfect backdrop, these falls are noted for their completely natural surroundings and the quiet except for the rushing water. One group of mini-waterfalls is called the Washing Machine, where one has to walk along the edge of the river, hugging the face of the rocks, ducking under and behind one of the waterfalls, before emerging in the middle and into the heart of the "power cycle" of the machine. Home-cooked food is available and guides provide local knowledge of the river, area and wildlife. Swimming in the many river pools after the picturesque journey through the mountains makes this a popular trip for all ages. Here, daredevils can climb into a custom designed Jamaican bobsled and try their hands at the tropical version of the Olympic sport of bobsledding. The track features a gravity-driven plunge of 3,280 feet with twists and turns. You control the speed of your descent with an in-sled handbrake, allowing for either a leisurely ride or a pulse quickening dive to the bottom (speeds up to 40 miles per hour). Once you come to a controlled stop, you and the bobsled are slowly raised back to the Railway Station through the forest on an elevated tramway, where you can opt to bobsled again, traverse the rainforest on the zip line adventure, visit the gift shop or glide down the water slide into the blue waters of an infinity pool which features breathtaking views. Zip Line Adventure Other Mystic Mountain escapades include the Rainforest Zip line Canopy Tour, another exploit definitely worth trying. This amazing combination of five zip lines allows ‘zippers’ to glide 170 meters through the jungle at a near vertical descent of 10 meters before landing on a wooden platform which doubles as the mid-station of the Rainforest Sky Explorer. -Zip line 1 = 90 meters -Zip line 2 = 120 meters -Zip line 3 = 30 meters -Zip line 4 = 61 meters -Zip line 5 = 170 meters -Vertical Descent = 10 meters -Suspension Bridge = 25 meters

6 of the best things to do in Jamaica with kids
Jan 12, 2024 • 5 min read
Here are the best experiences in Jamaica for family travelers © PeopleImages.com - Yuri A / Shutterstock
Whether your kid loves soaring above rainforest canopies or will happily spend the day splashing in the waves, there's something for them in Jamaica – the island nation is not just a playground for adults.
This Caribbean country, also known as the “land of wood and water,” is a paradise packed with lush green rainforests, turquoise blue coastlines and the world-famous Blue Mountains. With wildlife at every turn, Jamaica is also an excellent place for kids to learn about native birds, coral reefs and various fruits and flora.
In terms of family-friendly accommodations, there are plenty of all-inclusive resorts in Montego Bay , Negril and Ocho Rios that offer snorkeling, mini water parks, large pools, kids clubs and supervised arts and crafts.
Some resorts also have nannies available upon request, while others include nanny services in the room rate – be sure to call ahead to find out. Don't take the website at face value (unless it's been recommended to you), especially if it doesn't appear to have been recently updated.
Getting around is easy via private transfers and pre-arranged taxis. If you are traveling with a car seat and/or stroller, be sure to double-check that the vehicle picking you up from the airport or taking you on excursions is suitable.
Bring the kids and experience Jamaica in a whole new way with this list of the top things to do as a family.
1. Spend time on Jamaica's best beaches
Negril's well-known Seven Mile Beach offers up the island's most tranquil waters, making it the perfect place for kids to snorkel, swim and line the shores with sandcastles.
Many of Jamaica’s beaches in tourist towns like Ocho Rios and Negril feature activities like paddleboarding, jet-skiing and glass-bottom boat tours.
Beaches are also a great place for kids to get a crash course in Jamaican cuisine – open-air cooking on a grill is the way it’s done by the seaside.
Check out Pirates Island Waterpark in Negril and Ocho Rios; the waterparks have fantastic water slides for older kids and whirlpools and lazy rivers for the younger ones.
Planning tip: Booby Cay Island, off the coast of Negril, is the ideal spot for a beach picnic.
2. Splash in waterfalls at Turtle River Falls & Gardens
This oasis in Ocho Rios is the perfect place for freshwater fun and relaxation. Turtle River Falls and Garden has 14 waterfalls for you and the young ones to climb and splash around in.
What makes the 15-acre tropical garden special is its relative obscurity, and it offers an intimate rather than touristy experience.
The walk-in aviary allows children to feed gorgeous cobalt-blue peacocks and admire many other species of birds. Budding biologists will get a kick out of searching for turtles and other wildlife on the grounds.
Planning tip: Pack a picnic for the family, as there's no restaurant on site.
3. Hike or bike through Blue Mountain National Park
Famous for its world-renowned coffee and beauty, Jamaica’s Blue Mountain National Park is one of Jamaica's top places to visit , and it's sure to elicit curiosity and glee from little ones.
From hiking steep terrain to biking down rolling hills, exploring the sprawling Blue Mountains is a great way to spend the day with kids of all ages.
There are two hiking trails: the Blue Mountain Peak Trail, which takes about four hours to the mountain's highest point at 2256m (7401ft), and the Holywell Nature Walk, which has five walking trails for all abilities.
Hikes begin at the mountain base outside of Kingston and can be arranged through your hotel. If you and the kiddies enjoy camping, it's possible to do that here with the help of a guide. Sunrise tours are also available; they begin at 2am but feature plenty of breaks for rest and pictures.
If hiking is not your kids' jam, cycling through the mountains is a wonderful way to take in the various flowers and hummingbirds that call these mountains home. The ride is mostly downhill, leading to a waterfall that's perfect for a swim.
4. Explore underground at Green Grotto Caves
Designated as a national landmark, Green Grotto Caves in Ocho Rios is a labyrinth of underground caverns filled with history and an abundance of beauty. It's said to be the home of the first inhabitants of Jamaica, the Tainos, who used these caves for rituals.
The caves have also been used frequently as a hideout: the Spanish hid here during the English takeover of Jamaica in 1655, runaway enslaved people took shelter here in the 18th century and smugglers running arms to Cuba used the caves in the interwar period.
If you have mini explorers in tow, they will love the helmet and flashlight gear needed to trek down to the emerald-colored Grotto Lake.
Entrance fees include tour guides who will point out the indigenous fruit bats that call the caves home, as well as detail the rich history of the caves and the island.
Planning tip: Children aged four and over can participate in the tour. Sturdy footwear such as sneakers is recommended.
5. Stop for ice cream at Devon House
A national heritage site, Devon House is one of Jamaica's most praised landmarks because of its rich history and cultural diversity. Built in 1881, it was the home of the first Black Jamaican millionaire – George Stiebel – who earned his riches from gold mining in South America.
Today, visitors may tour the mansion and pop into the shops, including Devon House Bakery , home to a delicious Jamaican beef patty, and Devon House I Scream , the ideal spot for a cool treat with over 25 creamy flavors, from cookies and cream to mango and guava. Kids can also explore the bounty of space among the lush green gardens of the estate.
6. Have a day trip to Mystic Mountain
Since opening in 2008, the Mystic Mountain adventure park has been the top spot for families. Located near the cruise pier in Ocho Rios, Mystic Mountain makes for the perfect day trip for cruise tourists.
If zip-lining is on your kids' must-do list, they can do that here along with bobsledding, made famous by the country’s 1988 Olympic bobsledding team and the 1993 film Cool Runnings .
Bobsled riders will zip more than a half-mile through the lush rainforest on gravity-powered bobsleds, all the while taking in the panoramic views of the pristine coastline.
Planning tip: For zip-lining, children must be aged six or over, and for bobsledding, there is a minimum height requirement of 91.5cm (36 inches). After kiddies have used all their energy, they can recharge at the on-site restaurant.

Diplo’s Jamaica
The Grammy-winning D.J. and music producer recommends spots in a city he loves on Jamaica’s northeast coast. A dance party makes the cut.
Supported by
By Celeste Moure
- Published June 12, 2024 Updated June 13, 2024
Diplo, born Thomas Wesley Pentz, fell in love with Jamaica, particularly its Portland parish on the northeast coast, nearly 20 years ago. “I was D.J.ing on a cruise ship, got off in Ocho Rios, and drove through Port Antonio to get to Kingston,” said the multiple-Grammy nominee and winner who has collaborated with Dua Lipa, Sturgill Simpson, Snoop Dogg, Shakira, Bad Bunny and countless other musicians. “Portland is sort of like Costa Rica, all jungly and waterfalls. And Port Antonio is this quaint little town where I’d go on a sort of retreat, “Mr. Pentz added. About eight years ago he bought some farmland and built a house there.
Mr. Pentz thinks Port Antonio is a calmer option than Ocho Rios or other popular tourist spots on Jamaica for people who enjoy nature, hiking, waterfalls and, of course, beaches. It’s also for those who seek a more authentic experience. “It’s the sort of city where you’re mixing with the locals, and I think that’s what special about it,” he said.
Born in Mississippi and raised in Florida, Mr. Pentz has traveled extensively and D.J.ed on every continent, including Antarctica. A livestream of his D.J. set there, which took place on the helipad of Atlas Ocean Voyages’ World Voyager, was posted on YouTube in January.
Recently, Mr. Pentz has become a runner. He ran the Los Angeles marathon and competed in the Malibu Triathlon, but found that something was missing from the experience: a post-run celebration. So, he launched Diplo’s Run Club , a series of 5K runs — the inaugural events take place this fall in Seattle and San Francisco — culminating in afterparties, with D.J. sets from Diplo and friends, at the finish line. When he’s not running or traveling for work, he spends time at his home in Jamaica.
Here are five of his favorite places in and around Port Antonio.
1. Geejam Hotel
When Mr. Pentz first started coming to Port Antonio, he would often hang out and work on music at Geejam , a boutique hotel set on six acres of tropical rainforest at the edge of the Caribbean. “It was built as a sort of studio for Kingston artists and singers,” he said, and it continues to attract artists and Hollywood types, as well as Jamaicans from other parishes who check in for staycations. “You’ll sometimes see someone like Shawn Mendes or other artists who might be recording in the studio,” he said. The hotel, which has access to Frenchman’s Cove, a white sand beach, has large villas, cozy cabins tucked into the jungle and a main building with a dozen rooms. “It feels world class but has a backpacker vibe at the same time. There’s even a mushroom dispensary in the lobby,” he added, pointing out that psychedelics are not illegal on the island.
2. Rafting on the Rio Grande
On Jamaica’s longest river, the Rio Grande, bamboo rafts were once used to transport bananas from the interior of Portland to the coast for export. These days, locals and tourists alike book a rafting adventure for a leisurely way to soak in the beauty of the island’s flora and fauna. “The water’s not very deep, maybe waist high, and you can get out anywhere you want and swim a little,” said Mr. Pentz. “What I love about it is that halfway through the ride you stop at this beach and there’s an amazing restaurant, Belinda’s, where you can get all these local dishes and a Red Stripe for lunch, and just hang out. Then you get back on the raft and keep going.”
3. Vinyl Sundays at Natural Mystic Bar & Lounge
Natural Mystic Bar & Lounge is in a neighborhood of Port Antonio called Drapers. “One night a week this Italian guy and his wife and friends play records,” said Mr. Pentz, referring to the organizer Enrico Vicari. “They bring out their old 45s and their big speakers and it’s like a dance off, a big party in the street.” Mr. Pentz often stops by to D.J. when he’s in town. “A lot of expats live in Portland and on Sundays there’s a nice mix of local families, Rastas and European tourists who go there to dance and listen to old school reggae music. It goes from sunset until around two in the morning.”
4. Piggy’s Jerk Centre
“You can’t eat anything more quintessentially Jamaican than jerk chicken — and Piggy’s has the best in Port Antonio,” said Mr. Pentz. Even the most recent 007 himself, the actor Daniel Craig, would probably agree. During the filming of “No Time to Die,” the cast and crew would often hang out at this tiny eatery in Market Square in the center of Port Antonio. When the original restaurant burned in a fire, Mr. Craig and his pals raised funds to help rebuild it. “It’s a great place to eat some delicious food and hang out with the locals,” said Mr. Pentz. “I make sure to stop by at least once every time I’m in town.”
5. Boston Bay
Considered the birthplace of spicy jerk seasoning, Boston Bay is a town with a skate park and pretty bay that is home to one of the only surf spots in Jamaica. It’s also home to Boston Jerk Center, a collection of open-air food stalls that specialize in jerk cooking. “There’s maybe eight different restaurants and some serve the best jerk pork or jerk chicken, some have jerk vegetables,” said Mr. Pentz, who recommends getting your food to go and finding a spot at Boston Beach to watch the surfers. “You can rent a board and take a lesson. When I’m in town, this is where I surf.”
