MAMMA MIA! Will Embark on 25th Anniversary North American Tour This Year

The tour will launch in Denver this fall.

MAMMIA MIA! will embark on a 25th Anniversary North American Tour, launching this Fall. The ultimate feel-good show based on the songs of ABBA will open with The Denver Center for Performing Arts and continue on to play 35+ cities across North America including Baltimore and Minneapolis. Additional tour cities and casting will be announced at a later date.

Since premiering in London in 1999 and on Broadway in 2001, the irresistible musical has captured the hearts of millions around the globe. The sunny, funny tale of a mother, a daughter and three possible dads on a Greek island paradise, all unfolding to the storytelling magic of ABBA's timeless songs, has now been seen live on stage by 65 million people across the world and turned into two record-breaking movies - MAMMA MIA! The Movie and MAMMA MIA! Here We Go Again.

To date, MAMMA MIA! has been seen in 50 productions in 16 different languages grossing more than $4 billion at the box office.

MAMMA MIA! opened on Broadway in 2001 where it played for what was then a record-breaking 14 years, first at the Winter Garden Theatre, then at the Broadhurst Theatre. The show has had three North American tours prior to this: first in 2000 before the Broadway run, again in 2012, and the latest ending in 2017.

Also produced by Craymer, MAMMA MIA! The Movie became the highest grossing live action musical film of all time upon its release in 2008. A second film, MAMMA MIA! Here We Go Again, opened in July 2018 and is the most successful live musical movie sequel of all time. The films starred a host of stars including Meryl Streep , Christine Baranski , Julie Walters , Pierce Brosnan , Colin Firth , Stellan Skarsgård, Amanda Seyfried , Dominic Cooper , Lily James and Cher.

With music & lyrics by Benny Andersson & Björn Ulvaeus, MAMMA MIA! is written by Catherine Johnson , directed by Phyllida Lloyd and choreographed by Anthony Van Laast . The production is designed by Mark Thompson , with lighting design by Howard Harrison , sound design by Andrew Bruce & Bobby Aitken , and musical supervision, additional material & arrangements by Martin Koch .

The North American tour is booked by The Booking Group with casting by Tara Rubin Casting.

Creative Team

JUDY CRAYMER ( Original Producer / Co-Creator ) graduated from the Guildhall School of Music in 1977 and has since worked extensively in the theatre, film, television and music industries. Judy originated the idea of MAMMA MIA! and, in 1996, formed Littlestar Services Limited with Benny Andersson, Björn Ulvaeus and Richard East to produce the stage musical in London. Since then, she has produced 50 productions of MAMMA MIA! in 16 languages around the world. In 2002, Judy was presented with a Woman of the Year Award in recognition of her international success with MAMMA MIA! In the Queen’s birthday honours list of 2007, she was honoured with an MBE for her contribution to the music industry. In 2008, Judy produced “MAMMA MIA! THE MOVIE,” starring Meryl Streep and Pierce Brosnan. That same year, she was honoured with the Women in Film ITV Achievement of the Year Award. “MAMMA MIA! THE MOVIE” also garnered Golden Globe and Bafta nominations, and Judy was personally nominated by Bafta for the Carl Foreman Award for Special Achievement. In 2010, The Breast Cancer Research Foundation presented Judy with its Humanitarian Award for her commitment to raising breast cancer awareness and research funding around the globe with MAMMA MIA! and through the sale of the specially created Rock Chick Supremo T-shirts. Ten years after “MAMMA MIA! THE MOVIE” grossed more than $600 million around the world, Judy produced an all-new movie musical based on the songs of ABBA for Universal Pictures. “MAMMA MIA! HERE WE GO AGAIN,” written and directed by Ol Parker, and featuring Cher, Andy Garcia and Lily James alongside the returning cast  of the original movie, was released in July 2018. Judy has a passion for all things equestrian and is an Ambassador to British Showjumping. Judy also produced VIVA FOREVER! , an original musical based on the songs of The Spice Girls. Judy was awarded a CBE on the Queen’s Birthday honours list in 2020 for her services to theatre and charity. From September 2021 to January 2023 Judy served as Chairman of the Board and Independent Non-Executive Director of Universal Music Group. In 2022 she was honoured with the Variety Club Silver Heart Award for Outstanding Global Achievement in Cinema, Theatre and Music. Judy is co-executive producer of the new entertainment show “MAMMA MIA! I HAVE A DREAM” produced by Thames (a Fremantle label) and Littlestar, launching later in 2023 on ITV1 and ITVX.

RICHARD EAST ( Producer ) is an originating producer of MAMMA MIA! , having been involved since its inception. A Tony nominee, he has worked in the entertainment business for 35 years in Australia, London and the U.S.

BESPOKE THEATRICALS ( US Executive Producer ) Partners Amy Jacobs & Devin Keudell executive produce and general manage Broadway musicals, plays, and tours and served as the general managers for all US AEA Productions of MAMMA MIA! from 2000-2015. Other current productions include:  MJ The Musical, A Beautiful Noise – The Neil Diamond Musical, TINA – The Tina Turner Musical, Back to the Future the Musical  and  Harry Potter and the Cursed Child . Bespoke Theatricals has also supplied executive producer and general management consulting services to a variety of international productions including  MAMMA MIA!  on the Royal Caribbean, in Mexico, Brazil and Argentina and  After Midnight  on NCL Cruises.  General managers in the firm include David Roth, Danielle Saks, and Kate Egan. 

BJÖRN ULVAEUS ( Music & Lyrics ) 1945 Björn was born on 25 April in Gothenburg. When he was six years old, the family moved to the small town of Västervik, and this is where Björn grew up. In the mid-Fifties, Björn fell in love with rock’n’roll and skif e. By the early Sixties, he was a member of a folk group called the West Bay Singers. 1963 The group entered a talent contest arranged by Swedish radio. This led to discovery by songwriter and publisher Stig Anderson and his partner, Bengt Bernhag. Stig and Bengt had recently started a record company called Polar Music. The band acquired a new name, the Hootenanny Singers, and quickly became one of Sweden’s most popular groups of the Sixties. 1966 Björn had a chance meeting with Benny Andersson, himself a member of Sweden’s number-one pop group, The Hep Stars. They hit it off and wrote their rst song together, ‘Isn’t It Easy to Say’. Björn recorded a couple of solo singles in the late Sixties, at which point he also started concentrating more on his collaboration with Benny Andersson. 1970 Björn and Benny started releasing records as a duo and also staged a cabaret show together with their fiancées, Agnetha Fältskog and Anni-Frid Lyngstad. 1971 Björn and Agnetha married on 6 July. 1972-82 ABBA. 1982 Björn and Benny started writing the musical Chess with lyricist Tim Rice. 1984 A concept album for Chess was released in the autumn. 1986 The musical opened in London’s West End in May. 1988 Chess received its Broadway premiere. A reworked version of the musical opened in Stockholm, Sweden, in 2002. 1990 Björn and Benny decided to write a new musical. This time, they wanted to write exclusively in Swedish, and they chose the Emigrants novel series by author Vilhelm Moberg as the basis for their work. 1995 The resulting musical, Kristina från Duvemåla (Kristina from Duvemåla), opened in October. The show ran for three and a half years at various theatres in the Swedish cities of Malmö, Gothenburg and Stockholm. Björn and Benny’s most recent musical is Hjälp sökes (Help Wanted), a collaboration with playwright Kristina Lugn and Kristina director Lars Rudolfsson. Björn writes many of the lyrics for the Benny Andersson Orchestra, and has involved himself in the stagings of MAMMA MIA! . 2008 MAMMA MIA! THE MOVIE was released. 2016 MAMMA MIA! THE PARTY opened in Stockholm in January, with Björn as one of the producers. 2018 MAMMA MIA! HERE WE GO AGAIN was released.

BENNY ANDERSSON ( Composer ) 1946 Benny was born on 16 December in Stockholm. 1952 He received accordion lessons from his father and grandfather. 1964-68 Benny was a member of the Hep Stars, Sweden’s most popular rock band in the Sixties. During this time, he began composing music. ‘Sunny Girl’ and ‘Wedding’ were huge hits for the Hep Stars. 1972-82 ABBA. 1982-84 Benny composed the music (together with Björn Ulvaeus and Tim Rice) for the musical Chess . 1987 He began collaborating with Orsa Spelmän and recorded three albums rooted in Swedish folk music: Klinga Mina Klockor, November 1989 and Fiolen Min. 1990-95 Working with Björn, Benny composed the music to Kristina från Duvemåla, which premiered in October 1995. 1995 Benny received the title of professor from the Swedish government. 2001 His collaboration with Orsa Spelmän led to the formation of Benny Andersson’s Orchestra, a 16-man constellation with vocalists Helen Sjöholm and Tommy Körberg. Thus far, this has resulted in seven CD albums and several summer tours. 2007 Benny was inducted in to the Royal Swedish Academy of Music. 2008 He was appointed Honorary Doctor of the College of Humanities at Stockholm University, and at Luleå University of Technology in 2012. Benny Andersson is married to former TV producer Mona Nörklit. They have one child, Ludvig Andersson. Benny also has two children from a previous marriage, Peter Grönvall and Helene Odedal. He has six grandchildren: Charlie, Felix, Fabian, Malin, Viola and Leonard.

CATHERINE JOHNSON ( Book ) Theatre includes: Rag Doll, Renegades, Suspension (Bristol Old Vic), Too Much Too Young (Bristol Old Vic and London Bubble), Boys Mean Business, Dead Sheep, Little Baby Nothing (Bush Theatre, London), Shang- a-Lang (Bush Theatre and UK tour) and MAMMA MIA! (worldwide). Also Through the Wire and A Letter to Lacey (NT Connections). Film includes: Catherine wrote the screenplay for “MAMMA MIA! THE MOVIE,” released in July 2008. Television includes: “Casualty,” “Byker Grove,” “Love Hurts,” “Gold,” “Linda Green,” original screenplays for “Rag Doll and Where’s Willy?” (HTV) and “Sin Bin” (BBC), the series “Love in the 21st Century” (Channel 4) and “Dappers” (BBC3). Other work includes: Creative Consultant on ABBA the Museum, Stockholm. Awards include: Catherine has won the Bristol Old Vic/HTV Playwriting Award, Thames Television’s Writer-in-Residence Award and Thames Television’s Best Play Award and was nominated in 2002 for a Tony Award for Best Musical Book for MAMMA MIA! .

PHYLLIDA LLOYD ( Director ). Theatre includes: Her stage productions of MAMMA MIA! and Tina: The Musical have been globally successful, and critically acclaimed – receiving Olivier and Tony nominations. In London’s West End she directed the all-female Shakespeare trilogy: The Tempest, Julius Caesar and Henry IV (The Donmar Warehouse) – all of which were seen in New York, where she has previously directed The Taming of the Shrew (Joe’s Pub at the Public, a transfer from the Bush). Also for the Donmar Warehouse, Phyllida directed Mary Stuart which transferred to the West End and Broadway. She has also worked at the Royal Court Theatre, National Theatre and the RSC. Opera includes: Her work in opera has garnered an International Emmy, a FIPA d’Or and the Royal Philharmonic Society Award. Her productions include works for the Royal Opera House, English National Opera and Opera North. Film includes: The Oscar Award-winning "The Iron Lady", starring Meryl Streep and Jim Broadbent, "Herself" which premiered at Sundance Film Festival, and "Gloriana" for the BBC. After the success of the stage show of MAMMA MIA! , Phyllida went on to direct the film for Universal Pictures. In 2010, Phyllida was awarded a CBE for her services to drama.

ANTHONY VAN LAAST ( Choreographer ) Theatre credits include: Tina The Musical – worldwide (Tony Nomination and Outer Critics Circle Award); MAMMA MIA! – worldwide (Dora Mavor Moore Award) ; Sister Act – worldwide (Olivier Award nomination); Side Show – Broadway (Hayes Award nomination); Hair – Old Vic (Olivier Award nomination); Andrew Lloyd Webber’s Song and Dance – worldwide (Green Room Award); Joseph and the Technicolour Dreamcoat – worldwide (Olivier Award nomination, Dramalogue Award); Bombay Dreams – London, Broadway (Tony Award nomination); Candide – Old Vic (Olivier Award for best musical). He has made shows for many performances including Cher, Kate Bush, Sarah Brightman, Elaine Paige, Barry Humphries (Dame Edna), Mika, Ant and Dec and in Las Vegas Siegfried and Roy and Michael Crawford. MARK THOMPSON ( Production Designer ) Prominent set and costume designer. Mark’s work in the theatre has been recognized with two Critics’ Circle, five Olivier awards and nominated for six Tony awards including most recently the Tony for Best Scenic and Costume Design for Tina: The Musical . His work on the stage productions of MAMMA MIA!, Tina: The Musical and Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat , have garnered international critical acclaim and been global hits. His productions for the London West End and Broadway include God of Carnage (Ralph Fiennes), Bombay Dreams , Art (with Tom Courtney, Albert Finney, Ken Stott), La Bete (with Mark Rylance), One Man, Two Guvnors (with James Corden), The Blue Room (with Nicole Kidman). His iconic production of Alan Bennett’s The Wind in the Willows was a National Theatre favourite that was brought back for several years. His theatrical credits include productions at the Royal Court Theatre, The Bridge, The National Theatre. He has also worked in the most prominent opera houses across the world, including the MET, La Scala, Sidney Opera House and the Royal Opera House. After the success of the stage show of The Madness of George at the National Theatre, Mark went on to design costumes for the film "The Madness of King George III," directed by Nick Hytner.

ANDREW BRUCE ( Sound Designer ). began his theatre career at Glyndebourne Festival Opera in 1968 and was appointed Head of Sound at the Royal Opera House in 1971. A year later, he co-founded Autograph Sound Recording, a leading British sound design and equipment rental company, now responsible for numerous productions worldwide. He was Associate Designer on several landmarks of British musical theatre such as Evita, Cats and Starlight Express. Original design credits include: Song & Dance, Abbacadabra, Little Me, Les Misérables, Chess, Follies, Into the Woods, The Card, Miss Saigon, Children of Eden, City of Angels, Martin Guerre, The Fix, The Witches of Eastwick, The Secret Garden, Alice in Wonderland, MAMMA MIA!, Sweeney Todd, Chitty Chitty Bang Bang and Mary Poppins . His latest work includes Seven Deadly Sins, Isadora and Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland for the Royal Ballet and Mother Courage and her Children for the NT.

BOBBY AITKEN ( Sound Designer ) has been involved with Theatre Sound for over 30 years. Theatre includes: Notable/recent work includes: Mackie Messer – Salzburg Festival, VIVA FOREVER! (London), Ghost (London, Broadway and worldwide), Dirty Dancing (London and worldwide), MAMMA MIA! (London, Broadway and worldwide), We Will Rock You (London and worldwide), Grease (London and worldwide), Lennon (Broadway), Return to the Forbidden Planet (London, USA, Japan and Australia) and Five Guys Named Moe (London and tours), Apollo (US tour), The Divide (Old Vic), The Nutcracker (Royal Albert Hall). Regional work in the UK: Includes productions at The Belgrade Theatre Coventry, Derby Playhouse, Sheffield Crucible, Manchester Royal Exchange, Palace Theatre, Watford Leicester Haymarket and The New Wolsey. MARTIN KOCH ( Musical Supervisor, Additional Arrangements and Materials ) runs a successful music production company and recording studio with colleague Nick Gilpin, which undertakes television, film, CD and DVD projects. Currently working on the film Consider Yourself for Mob Films and PTL, a musical written by Sir Elton John. Training: Royal College of Music (Scholar). Theatre includes: London (Musical Director): Chicago (Cambridge Theatre), Pirates of Penzance (Theatre Royal, Drury Lane), The Boy Friend (Albery), Blondel (Aldwych) and Follies (Shaftesbury). DAVID HOLCENBERG ( Associate Music Supervisor ) was the original music director of  MAMMA MIA!!  and is thrilled to be back on the island! Other recent Broadway:  MJ  (Tony and Grammy nominations, Drama Desk Award),  Groundhog Day, Matilda, Rocky and Ghost . Other credits include the world premiere of  Newsies , the US premiere of  Ragtime ,  The Radio City Summer Spectacular  starring the Rockettes and  MAMMA MIA!!  at the Hollywood Bowl.

Belk Theater features state-of-the-art equipment, production and support capabilities and can host any event, from grand opera to rock to corporate annual meetings and lectures.

The theater features a contemporary European horseshoe arrangement for an intimate atmosphere and world-class acoustics. The most distant seat is less than 135 feet from the stage.

A hallmark of the theater’s design is some 2,400 “points of light” in the audience chamber, part of a dazzling fiber optic network with multi-color capabilities.

Renowned architect Cesar Pelli designed the Performing Arts Center, which opened in 1992, as well as the adjacent Bank of America Corporate Center and Founders Hall. The Center’s name honors the contributions of the people of the state of North Carolina as well as the generosity of the Blumenthal Foundation, the largest private donor to the capital campaign.

'Les Miserables,' 'Moulin Rouge,' and more top 2024-25 PNC Broadway in Louisville season

The world's most popular musical is coming to town as part of the 2024-25 season of PNC Broadway in Louisville . Not only that, the new season is packed with six other exciting touring shows including a blend of highly requested returns and hot premieres straight from Broadway.

The new season, announced Thursday, also includes earlier curtain times and an updated procedure for securing season subscriptions.

Held at the Kentucky Center for the Performing Arts , 501 W. Main St., the new season kicks off in the fall of 2024 with " Les Misérables ," one of the world’s most popular musicals. In February, " Moulin Rouge! The Musical " will premiere for a two-week run.

The impressive lineup also includes the most recent revival of " The Wiz ," and the family-friendly " Peter Pan " returns after two decades. The new Broadway hit " & Juliet " joins the roaster in the spring of 2025 followed by the hilarious musical comedy " Shucked ." And " Mamma Mia! " returns to Louisville as a season option this December.

"We work very hard to bring a great mix of shows that will hit a chord with our audiences," Leslie Broecker, president of PNC Broadway in Louisville told the Courier Journal. "It's a mix of familiar, perennial favorites like 'Les Miserable' and 'Mamma Mia,' and the unknown or brand new shows like 'Shucked' and '& Juliet' which make a season an exciting mix for our audience."

The most anticipated Broadway musical of the new season is "Les Misérables." The show is one of the most celebrated in theatrical history and was last staged in Louisville in 2018. Cameron Mackintosh's brilliant staging in this iteration has been hailed as “Les Mis for the 21st Century," according to reviews in the Huffington Post.

"Peter Pan," and "Mamma Mia!" also make their return to the Kentucky Center. According to Broecker, creating the perfect mix of revivals and new Broadway hits, along with the Louisville premiere of "Moulin Rouge! The Musical," is the perfect recipe for a successful season.

"New touring shows add the element of excitement and revivals are like comfort food," she told the Courier Journal. "Audiences say, 'I love that show, I have memories with that show' and when I put those into a season, they bring back all those good feelings for the audience."

In addition to the show lineup, Broecker announced earlier start times will be part of the 2024-25 PNC Broadway in Louisville season.

"We surveyed our subscribers and when we got the surveys back, there was an overwhelming request to start shows earlier," Broecker told the Courier Journal. "So starting with the new season, we will shift performances on Tuesday through Friday to 7 p.m. Saturday evening performances will now start at 7:30 p.m. Matinee show times will remain the same, with Saturdays at 2 p.m. and Sunday at 1 and 6:30 p.m."

Currently, 2024-25 season tickets are only available to active subscribers for renewal. New subscription tickets will go on sale on April 15. A waitlist and more information is available at BroadwayinLouisville.com

All productions take place at the Kentucky Performing Arts building, 501 W. Main St. Performances typically run for one week, though 'Moulin Rouge! The Musical ' will run for two weeks. Date/time options are Tuesday-Friday at 7 p.m., Saturday at 2 and 7:30 p.m., and Sundays at 1 and 6:30 p.m.

WHAT IS MAMMA MIA THE MUSICAL ABOUT?

From West End to global phenomenon, MAMMA MIA! is Judy Craymer’s ingenious vision of staging the story-telling magic of ABBA’s timeless songs with a sunny, funny tale of a mother, a daughter and three possible dads unfolding on a Greek island idyll.

To date, it has been seen by over 65 million people in 50 productions in 16 different languages. In 2011 it became the first Western musical ever to be staged in Mandarin in the People’s Republic of China. MAMMA MIA the musical became the 8th longest running show in Broadway history where it played a record-breaking run for 14 years.

The movie version is said to have been the highest-grossing live-action musical film of all time upon its release in 2008. A second film, Mamma Mia! Here We Go Again, opened in July last year and is reportedly the most successful live musical movie sequel of all time.

With music and lyrics by Benny Andersson & Björn Ulvaeus, Mamma Mia! is written by Catherine Johnson, directed by Phyllida Lloyd and choreographed by Anthony Van Laast.

It took Judie Craymer 10 years to persuade Andersson and Ulvaeus to create the musical we know and love.
Craymer's was inspired by ‘The Winner Takes It All’ to create the musical, the song started the process of creating a strong female lead character…that character would eventually become Donna.

Interview with the cast of mamma mia.

Residing in the gorgeous Greek island of Kalokairi 6 days a week, the cast members of MAMMA MIA! are no strangers to the sun. However, the blistering heat isn’t for everyone. Jake Bailey , who plays Pepper in the show much prefers a ‘British’ summer, ‘I can’t deal with the heat and sun!’, in fact everyone we spoke to in the cast; Gemma Goggin (Rosie), Mazz Murray (Donna) Miles Henderson (Sky) Meg Hateley (Sophie) all agreed that the predictably unpredictable British weather was best! So, it’s a good job, that their mythical paradise is located at the Novello Theatre in the heart of the West End, where a cooler climate is almost guaranteed!

Another thing that the tight-knit company all agree on? The importance of crisps at a picnic! When asked to describe their alfresco must-haves, a variety of ingredients were mentioned, from the highbrow ( Gemma: strawberries, prosecco, salami…) to the, not quite Michelin star ( Miles: cocktail sausages, tinnies...) the one thing that reunited all the dream feasts were crisps (or be it black truffle ones in Gemma’s case…)

Food and drink are an important aspect of their lives (and they certainly need it, leaping, dancing, and singing in the most energetic show in the West End eight times a week!) dark chocolate is an interval must-have for some, whilst twister ice lollies and ice creams are the only way to cool down for others. Meg can be seen drinking a large Diet Coke to quench her thirst, whilst her fictional mother, Mazz, prefers cool beer and larger (after work, of course!)

Just like Sophies three possible dads, there are a few differences between the cast members. Some have elaborate, and expertly timed pre-show rituals ( Jake: I have a fair few, I always go say hello to wigs while I fill my bottle up while "Honey Honey" is on, me and the boy's fist bump before walking on, I’ll always do a clap and prayer before "Voulez Vous" and before "Does Your Mother Know" I will siren, pray and blow the nose because a runny nose in that number is the last thing anybody wants!) whilst others are a tad simpler ( Miles: I get into costume.)

We caught up with the cast to discuss all things BBQS, on-stage mishaps, and, of course, MAMMA MIA!

After a short break, the MAMMA MIA! International Tour reopens in May 2024, starting at the Shanghai Culture Square, Shanghai from 1 – 16 May 2024.

From there we will be visiting cities all over China, East Asia and Europe.

Just announced, we’ll be at the Rockhal, Luxembourg from Friday 7 March – Sunday 9 March 2025, tickets on sale from 10am (BST) / 11am (CET) Friday 19 April 2024.
