India: Luxury & Private Safaris

How does one describe a country that stretches from the 28,000-foot high snow-capped Himalayan Mountains in the north that shelter the elusive snow leopard, to the sun-kissed beaches and swaying palm trees on the Arabian Sea and Bay of Bengal in the south? On the edge of the great desert of Rajasthan, one finds the magical cities of Jaipur , Jodhpur , Udaipur and Agra , renowned for the incredible palaces of their Maharajas and for magnificent forts and temples such as the Amber Fort. And of course, the Taj Mahal . Taking in the delicate details and perfect symmetry of this masterpiece of Muslim art at dawn is incredibly moving.

On the banks of the sacred Ganges, the city of Varanasi quite simply defies description—the epicenter of spirituality where death, rebirth, belief, and mundane life all meet. Jungles teeming with exotic birds, tigers, elephants, and even rhino, are bordered by sleepy villages where little has changed in the past 100 years. This is the land of Bollywood, where people really do bust out in song and dance. It is a highly spiritual country, home to Sikhs, Jains, Jews, Christians, Muslims, and Buddhists. You will find stunning natural beauty, peaceful villages, bustling cities, magnificent temples, and extraordinary birds, and wildlife. To experience India is to be deeply touched in one’s innermost being.

India, incredible India, a land of contrasts. Exquisite beauty, fabulous wealth, grinding poverty, pomp and ceremony, magnificent palaces, colorful saris, dusty landscapes, charm, politesse, patience, and acceptance are all juxtaposed at any one moment. Add a heady mix of incense, spice, flowers, chants, sitars, drums, and car horns. Not insistent, not saying “get out of my way” but rather, “toot toot, I’m behind you, passing on left.

Is India the Right Destination for You?

  • Travelers who love to immerse themselves in other cultures will be incredibly stimulated in India. At some point your eyes will burn from the intensity of chili in the air, your ears will be filled with the music and the constant hooting of horns, and your brain will reel trying to establish order within the chaos. Most people speak English and love to engage with visitors. You will be welcomed in temples and mosques, homes and shops. India is paradise for the curious.
  • India truly has some of the most original and beautiful hotels in the world where you will be lavished with attention and care and surrounded by exquisite beauty. If you’ve ever dreamed of staying in a palace, you will be delighted at every turn.
  • Foodies will relish the opportunity to sample a plethora of flavors, where specialty dishes vary by region and fusion is king.
  • Wildlife enthusiasts will be enticed by the country’s 47 tiger reserves, brimming with knowledgeable and dedicated guides and wardens.

When to Visit India?

For most of India, the best time is from October thru May, with the ideal time for wildlife viewing being February and March. India has an extraordinary variety of climatic regions, ranging from tropical in the south to temperate and alpine in the Himalayan north. In December and January, temperatures average around 50–59°F in the area around New Delhi. Temperatures rise as one proceeds towards the equator, peaking around 68–77°F in mainland India’s southeast. December and January can have freezing temperatures at night in Rajasthan and at the higher elevations in the north, though most of the northern states experience cool and dry winters as they are sheltered by the Himalayas.

How Much Should I Budget for a Trip to India?

What does a trip to india cost.

The cost of a trip to India will vary widely based on the type of accommodation you select. If you are exclusively visiting cities, there are many economical Western hotels offering a good clean bed at the end of a day’s exploring. For those looking to revel in the opulence of the Maharajas, India boasts numerous palaces that have been converted into hotels. To take advantage of the fabulous hotels and camps that we consider part of the experience, you should plan on $5000 to $10,000 per person for two weeks.

Our Favorite Areas in India

  • Though the Golden Triangle is considered a must-see, we much prefer the quieter life of southern India or the far north. Floating on your private boat among the rice fields in the backwater of Kerala , home of Ayurveda, is our idea of heaven.
  • Gujarat is noted for its amazing crafts and delightful villages as is the northern state of Punjab, home to the Sikh Golden Temple at Amritsar.
  • Being safari aficionados, pride of place has to go to the game parks , of which there are many. The experience is not as wild as parks in East Africa or Botswana, but the scenery is outstanding, the wildlife plentiful, and the camps we recommend are true “wow” experiences.  Seeing a tiger is heart-stopping.
  • For those who revel in intense sensation and challenge, Varanasi should not be missed.

What Else Should I Know Before Planning a Trip to India?

Many people dislike India for all the reasons that others love it.  For some, the dirt, the traffic, and the immersion in such a different culture is just not their idea of vacation. And if you don’t like spicy food, you will be hungry.

The Lowdown on Safari

Tigers are eponymous with a safari experience in India and while their numbers are strong, they are elusive. Unlike safari in Africa, permits by zone are assigned based on availability when you confirm your trip. Early bookings have their choice of zones, often claiming ones with the highest tiger densities well in advance. Last minute trips aren’t at a loss though on the Tatkal system, which allocates permits for every zone on the day of the drive. Though you aren’t guaranteed a permit, we’ve yet to have a client not receive one. Full day permits allow you extended hours beyond the morning and afternoon drives and let you cross into any zone.

Another key difference from safari in Africa is the crowds you’ll encounter. At the park gates you’ll find a lineup of jeeps ready to channel their inner F1 driver as soon as the clock strikes. It’s a madhouse, but isn’t that also the fun of India? The vehicles shortly disperse among their assigned zones and quiet quickly settles.

Ways to Experience India

You can walk beside elephants; ride a camel into the desert; and take a train bearing names such as Royal Rajasthan, Palace on Wheels, or the opulent Maharaja’s Express. The palm tree-lined back waters of Kerala are best experienced on an overnight journey on a picturesque private boat. Walk through colorful bazaars, busy cities, and small villages. Wherever you go, you will be well received.  In the game parks ( Kanha, Pench, and Bandavgarh are our favorites) you will be in open sided 4X4 vehicles, very similar to those in Africa.

Secrets and Tips from our Experts

  • To get the most out of your time in India, use the services of one of our private guides. You’ll find yourself on many long drives and having a charismatic companion will greatly enhance the journey.
  • Train rides are interesting and can often be faster than driving.
  • End your journey with a boat ride on the backwaters of Kerala.
  • Do a ‘full day’ safari in Central India’s parks for a taste of the wild and visit with Bengal tigers portrayed in Rudyard Kipling’s The Jungle Book .

9 of the best luxury safari lodges to see big cats in India

Chandreyi bandyopadhyay checks out the top spots to stay for feline sightings..

tigger

Words by Chandreyi Bandyopadhyay

India is a land of rich biodiversity and holds almost 80 per cent of the world’s tiger population. Other notable felines in the wilderness of India include leopards, Asiatic lions, snow leopards and the elusive clouded leopards.

While most of the prominent national parks for tiger safaris are located in central India, it would be worthwhile to explore different regions for their incredible flora and fauna as well as their big cat population. We list some of the most luxurious retreats and safari lodges in India that offer a wholesome experience when it comes to the incredible wildlife that is found here.

SUJÁN JAWAI, Rajasthan

sujan jawai

The premier luxury resort derives its name from the seasonal Jawai river, which flows through the remarkable landscape in Rajasthan, emptying into the Jawai Bandh, one of the largest reservoirs in the state. A dramatic backdrop of granite hills and kopjes, dated over 850 million years old, situated between rich agrarian fields, sand rivers, scrubland and patches of light forest surround the tented camp which is set on its own private wilderness.

The camp is located equidistant to Jodhpur and Udaipur, which makes this unique and otherwise remote wilderness very accessible to travellers in the know. Well known for its incredibly unique rocky leopard habitats and the fearless residents of the area, Jawai is a must visit when in Rajasthan. Village walks, cycling excursions, temple trails and strolls with the Rabari tribes are highly popular activities during a stay here.

"the tour itself was good there were times when i felt we were being rushed to leave when i would have preferred to stay longer instead of doing rug & leather demo/sales pitches at us.(Shopping was not a reason i chose this holiday) & i felt we were being used as bait for the various companies to make money.i did get sick at one point & as i only ate at provided accommodation & tour restaurant stops it was obviously from one of these places whose hygiene standards i thought was poor.communication was quite poor, & some of the published information was unclear & caused some unpleasant unnecessary issues while on tour.

"They support animal cruelty! Our guide was excellent - however they offer camel rides, where the camels are in bad shape and mistreated and shows where they “magician’ use live animals, such as pigeons in a show in Pushkar. This is absolutely cruel and I cannot recommend a tour that uses animals for entertainment and claim it is not cruel. I really hope they will reconsider the animal options..

Luxury India Safari

A stunning safari ensuring that you venture through a number of different areas within India. Track leopards whilst staying in luxurious African-style tents, stand in awe at the splendour of the Taj Mahal as well as exploring the bustling streets of Delhi.

This incredible itinerary takes you to a range of different areas throughout India and Rajasthan. You will have ample time to explore stunning buildings such as the Taj Mahal, Agra Fort and the Meherangarh Fort as well as venturing through Ranthambore National Park and the breath-taking area of Jawai in search of India’s resident wildlife including tigers, leopards and elephants.

Arrival in Delhi

Upon arrival in Delhi, you will be met and transferred to your hotel. Take some time to relax after your flight and let the anticipation build prior to your adventures of the coming days.

Exploring Old and New Delhi

Take a sightseeing tour of Old Delhi; explore the narrow winding lanes which surround the Red Fort as well as the bustling the bazaars and shops - you will also have the opportunity to take a rickshaw ride. In the afternoon you will continue onto New Delhi, the part of the city which is renowned for its formal parks and magnificent parliament building. Your next stop will be the Sikh temple - Gurudwara Bangla Sahib.

Agra Exploration

This morning, after a delicious breakfast, you will drive approximately four hours to Agra and will be able to visit the Agra Fort which was built in the 16th century AD by three generations of Mughal emperors. Next you will visit the tomb of Itimad-ud-Daulah; before the Taj Mahal was built its design was already standing and is known as the 'Baby Taj'. Built to represent a silver jewel box in marble, this mausoleum houses the body of Mirza Ghiyas Beg. You will end the day with a magical view of a sunset over the mausoleum from Mahtab Bagh or the Moonlight Garden.

Visit to the Taj Mahal and Beyond

Visit the Taj Mahal at sunrise; a monument of love built by Shah Jehan in 1630 for his queen. For 22 years 20,000 men laboured day and night to build this masterpiece. Later you will drive to Bharatpur railway station; en route you will visit Fatehpur Sikri - an enigmatic deserted Mughal city. This spacious, red sandstone city was built in the 16th century by the great Mughal Emperor, Akbar. The architecture is a combination of Hindu and Muslim styles. You will now board your train to Sawai Madhopur. Upon arrival you will be met and driven to your hotel.

Exploring Ranthambore National Park

Over the next couple of days, you will be able to explore the vibrant Ranthambore National Park encompasses nearly 400 sq km of dry, deciduous forest in South Western Rajasthan, nestled between the Aravali and Vindhya Hills. Though mainly known for tigers, sounders of wild boar and gazelle can be seen, as well as the Indian hare, mongoose and monitor lizards. Among the other local fauna are the leopard, hyena, jackal, jungle cats, sloth bear and marsh crocodile. If it’s good enough for the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge, it’s good enough for us. Perched on the fringe of Kaziranga National Park, Diphlu River Lodge offers 12 semi-detached cottages . Inspired by the architecture of local Mishing tribal homes, the cottages are raised on stilts and made of bamboo and wood, topped with thatched roofs. Inspired in design by the Hadis (hamlets) or tribal villages, the picturesque Evolve Back Kuruba Safari Lodge is bordered on two sides by the Kabini River. Splurge on the Pool Reserve Hut, which comes with lavish living areas, an indulgent bathroom, a temperature-controlled pool and a unique Star Bed (an open-air berth that’s perfect for stargazing). Soak in the forest experience at Jim’s Jungle Retreat located on the periphery of Jim Corbett National Park. 18 independent cottages channel the architectural style of the local pastoral Van Gujjar tribe with a generous sprinkling of British Raj flair. We recommend the Jungle Lodge, which offers spectacular views at a 15-foot elevation. Experiences include jeep safaris, cycling expeditions, heritage walks and even an overnight stay in the forest. After a long safari, lounge by the pool, relax in the library or rejuvenate yourself in the jungle spa.

Pugdundee Safaris

Redefining the Indian Safari Experience

A luxurious melody of sustainable living.

india luxury safari

Pugdundee Safaris is recognized as one of India's leading responsible safari companies. With seven intimate jungle lodges in Central India and many bespoke wilderness experiences it presents the very best of the Indian subcontinent wildlife & hospitality. Between 2009 and 2022, we have been awarded for our excellence in wildlife safaris, our commitment to sustainability, our experienced naturalists and our pioneering mobile safari initiative.

Pugdundee is a Hindi word meaning a foot trail commonly used by humans and animals, this word is popularly used for such beaten paths in the Indian jungles. We continuously strive to deliver the best possible guest experience, while still integrating the conservation of jungles and the people living around. We are motivated by the hope of reaching out to people in the remotest areas of our country, as we believe that they are the front-runners of wildlife conservation. However, maybe just a drop in the ocean we consider that we are making a significant contribution to wildlife conservation and rural economy wherever our lodges are.

Driven by the love of Indian jungles we made an unplanned humble beginning in 1986, with a small-tented camp at Panna. Between 2007 -2010, two more lodges were setup and it was not until the year 2011 that they were all put together under a common umbrella. Today, Pugdundee Safaris is run by a passionate team of wildlifers and hospitality professionals with a team of over 300 people committed in providing an incredible wildlife experience. The team includes naturalists, nature guides, boatmen, trackers and a marketing team based in Delhi.

Besides its mainstay of running wildlife lodges, Pugdundee Safaris has been keenly engaged in conservation and community development activities. At Pugdundee we believe local people hold the future of the forests in their hands and can either help protect or destroy them. If we wish to conserve our forests, we must look after the needs of local people by helping to improve their ability to earn livelihoods. Our lodges set mostly in remote locations away from regular tourism hubs help ensure that the benefit of eco-tourism is distributed far and beyond.

Our Eco Wildlife Lodges

Our lodges are nestled in the large forested estates in the most pristine locations away from regular tourism hubs, yet close enough to offer easy access to the national parks. Offering an unparalleled Indian Safari experience, they are the epitome of luxury, comfort & unimagined indulgence.

The Best Tiger Safaris In India

India’s wildlife journey with our experts.

One of the greatest reasons wildlife and nature lovers are drawn to India is the wildlife safaris that explore the rich range of biodiversity (jungles, rivers, and magnificent wildlife). The main attraction of these safaris is the Royal Bengal Tiger,  an awesome creature unlike any other.

Tigers are notoriously elusive. Masters of disguise and stealth, these majestic animals are hard to spot in the wild.

Our local wildlife experts, therefore, compiled a  list of National Parks and Tiger Reserves that give you the best shot at spotting tigers out in the wild. Our list covers all regions of India.

So, if you are traveling in only one particular region of India (say the Rajasthan in North or Kerala/Karnataka in South India), we have got you covered with a whole host of options. The list has been arranged in order of probability of tiger sighting. We begin with the best tiger-spotting places.

NOTE: Please note that during the Monsoon Months (Mid-June to September/Early October) , most National Parks shut down for maintenance and fear of flash floods. So, plan your wildlife trips to India accordingly.

Summer in India (April-June) is quite intense and the mercury can rise up to 37-40°C. But that is also the best time for tiger safaris because the tigers have to stick close to water holes and reservoirs to stay hydrated. This makes spotting them easier than at other times of the year. So braving the heat is well worth the challenge.

Let our local travel experts help you make a  non-obligatory travel and completely transparent plan  that shows you the route, places to stay, transport modes and gives you an idea of the cost of the tour with a complete breakup.

Customize Your Trip

Top 12 Tiger Safaris In India

With 106 National Parks and over 500 Wildlife Sanctuaries in India, you are really spoiled for choice and figuring out where to go can get quite confusing.

(Which is why) We have narrowed the list down to 12 places where you are almost guaranteed to spot tigers out on the prowl.

 1. Ranthambore National Park (Sawai Madhopur, Rajasthan)

2. bandhavgarh national park (madhya pradesh), 3. jim corbett national park (uttarakhand), 4. kanha national park (madhya pradesh), 5. kaziranga national park (assam), 6. bandipur national park (karnataka), 7. nagarhole national park (karnataka), 8. pench tiger reserve (maharashtra), 9. tadoba andhari tiger reserve (maharashtra), 10. periyar national park (kerala), 11. satpura national park (maharashtra), 12. gir national park (gujarat).

Ranthambore

Abode of the Royal Bengal Tiger, the Ranthambore National Park is hands down the best place in all of India to go on a tiger-spotting safari. This wild outback in the Sawai Madhopur region of Rajasthan used to be the private hunting ground of the Maharaja of Jaipur.

Sprawling over 400 sq. km. this north Indian national park is considered to be the most popular in the country, and features in almost all itineraries of trips to Rajasthan. It is named after an ancient fort of the same name that’s located on its premises.

Ranthambore is the perfect second fiddle act to the cultural immersions of Rajasthan (in “Pink City” Jaipur , “Venice in the East” Udaipur , “Golden City” Jaisalmer, “Blue City” Jodhpur and Pushkar ).

Best Time to Visit : March to June

Number Of Tigers in The Reserve : 80 as per the latest count in 2022 (25 tigers, 31 tigresses and 24 cubs)

Plan A Trip

BANDHAVGARH

The Central Indian State of Madhya Pradesh is one of the primary destinations in the country for wildlife and tiger safaris.

Why? Because, of all the states in India, Madhya Pradesh has the highest density of tigers per square mile on the planet. And, Bandhavgarh is only one of its many Tiger Reserves—albeit the best of the lot. (We will cover the rest later).

The Bandhavgarh National Park is nestled in the Vindhya Hills of the state. The landscape is characterized by a dense deciduous forest cover, steep ridges, meandering hills and vast meadows —making it an ideal habitat for tigers and a wide range of other wild species.

This erstwhile hunting ground of the Maharaja of Rewa gives Ranthambore a run for its money for the title of the best destination for a tiger safari in India. The first white tiger to ever be hunted (hunted by the Maharaja) is now on display on the property.

Best Time to Visit: November to June

Number Of Tigers in The Reserve: 60-70

Chance Of Spotting Tigers: Good

Big City Nearby : Umaria, Jabal Pur, Mandla

Tiger Safari Zones : Tala, Bamera and Magdi.

Other Tourist Attractions in The Regions : Khajuraho Temples (UNESCO World Heritage Site).

Jim Corbett

The Jim Corbett National Park is among the highest altitude national parks in India.

Nestled at a height of 1300-1400 feet above sea level in the Northern Himalayan State of Uttarakhand, this park is home to tigers and a whole range of exciting wildlife like Indian elephants, Himalayan Black Bears, Pangolins, jungle cats, leopards, fishing cats and langurs.

This pioneering National Park was established in 1936 (the oldest in India) under the British Raj and has been a model for other national parks to emulate on account of its trend-setting wildlife conservation efforts .

In 1956, the Indian Government named the park after the renowned naturalist and conservationist, Jim Corbett (it was previously named after Governor of United Provinces William Malcolm Hailey).

Best Time to Visit: December to June

Number Of Tigers in The Reserve: 252

Chance Of Spotting Tigers: High

Big City Nearby: Nainital (a popular Uttarakhand hill station known as “Lake Capital of India”)

Tiger Safari Zones: Durga Devi, Dhela, Bijarani, Dhikala and Jhirna.

Other Activities In The Region: Hill stations holiday in Nainital (Boat rides in the lake. Lakeside picnics). Rishikesh “Yoga Capital of the World” (famous for yoga, meditation and white water adventure sports in the Ganga River). Other hill stations of Uttarakhand like Mussoorie, Auli, Almora, Dhanualti etc)

Kanha

Located in the dense Maikal Moutain Range in a topography that can be characterized as a highland, Kanha is a magnificent habitat for Bengal Tiger.

Comprising a thick forest cover, vast grasslands, and abundant water reservoirs, Kanha is a great place for tigers to thrive and on a predatory hunting prowl for prey.

Other exotic creatures like Dhole (Indian Wild Dogs), sloth bears, Barasingha (swamp deer) and leopards also find their home in Kanha.

Aside from tigers, the BARASINGHA (Swamp Deer) is one of crown jewels of Kanha.

Number Of Tigers in The Reserve: 500

Chance Of Spotting Tigers:  Very High.

Big City Nearby : Jabalpur

Tiger Safari Zones: Kanha, Mukki, Kisli, Sarhi

Other Activities In The Region : Kanha Museum, Mandla, Kowardha Palace, Jabalpur, Pachmarhi (Hill Station). Panna National Park, Raneh Water Falls, Ajigarh Fort, Khajuraho Temples.

Kaziranga

So far we have covered mostly Tiger-centric destinations where the primary attraction is (of course) the Royal Bengal Tiger. In this national Park, however, tigers share their abode with another magnificently exotic animal— the rare one-horned rhinoceros.

Declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site, the Kaziranga National Park is home to the world’s two-thirds population of one-horned rhinos (their name stands at 2,613 as per the latest count).

Located in the Golaghat and Nagaon districts of the North-Eastern state of ASSAM , Kaziranga is also home to a large number of tigers and has been declared by UNESCO as “ an Important Bird Area” due to a rich variety of indigenous and migratory birds found here.

Four rivers (including the sacred Brahmaputra ), a large number of smaller water bodies, and a landscape of marshlands, swamps, tropical moist broadleaf forests and elephant grass make for an excellent habitat for a rich variety of mammals, reptiles, and avian creatures.

Best Time to Visit : November to April

Number Of Tigers in The Reserve : 118

Chance Of Spotting Tigers : Good

Big City Nearby : Guwahati (47 Miles), Dimapur and Jorhat.

Tiger Safari Zones: The Central (Bagori) Zone, Western (Agaratoli) Zone And Eastern Range (Ghorakati Range).

BANDIPUR

The erstwhile hunting ground of for the Nizam and Maharajas of Mysore (the “City of Palaces” —now the Bandipur National— in the southern Indian state of Karnataka is a major wildlife destination in the region.

The magnificent Kabini river snakes it way through this national park and provides sustenance to the wildlife and other species here. Bandipur is home to tigers, lions, antelopes, Indian Gaurs, Asiatic Elephants and many other species.

Together with Nagarhole National Park which is located on the other side of the Kabini River, it provides visitors with an opportunity to kill two birds with one stone i.e., you can go on two different wildlife safaris in one go in Karnataka.

Best Time To Visit : October To March.

Number Of Tigers In The Reserve: 231

Big City Nearby : Bandipur, Masingudi, Gunlupet.

Nagarhole

Bandipur’s twin on the other side of the Kabini river, the Nagarhole National Park is a land of exotic Teak and Sandalwood forest trees. There is a fragrant aroma of Sandalwood when you are in the midst of its foliage.

Nestled in the Brahmagiri mountains , the landscape of Nagarhole features lush green forest cover, cascading waterfalls and ridges.

Aside from providing tigers the perfect habitat to make a home and find prey in, this topography also makes Nagarhole a great destination for river adventures like white-water rafting, boating, and fishing.

Having covered national Parks in North and North East India (Rajasthan, Uttarakhand, Assam), we now move to Maharashtra, the economic hub of India (home to some of India’s well-known cities like Mumbai, Pune, and Nagpur).

As per the latest count carried out in 2020, the Tadoba Tiger Reserve (located in the Chandrapur district) is home to 88 Bengal Tigers.

Stretching over 577 sq. km. of area, Tadoba gets its name from the deity “Tadoba” worshipped by the tribes of the region. The tribe believes that the deity resides in its awe-inspiring and jaw-droppingly dense foliage.

Aside from tigers, Tadoba is also home to creatures like Indian Gaurs (Bisons), Sambar (stags), Indian Cobra, honey badgers, Dhole (wild dogs), Russell Vipers, and the endangered Indian python.

The best destinations for Tiger Safaris in India

Top national parks to catch the big cat in action...

There are over 600 national parks in India which are home to close to 200 endangered mammal species. The Royal Bengal Tiger is one of the flagship species as not only is it the apex predator of the very forests that thrive here, but it is also the biggest cat among its brothers. National Parks in India varies with varying tropics and landscapes. We have the dry deciduous forest of Ranthambore National Park in the western part of India while the evergreen Sal forest of Kanha National Park thrives in Central India. Corbett National Park is unique as it rests in the foothills of the Great Himalayan Range, making it an awe-stunning frame to capture. India has some of the most biodiverse lands making it a hotspot for wildlife and tiger safaris and nature enthusiasts.

Exclusive Tiger Safaris in India

On trails that resonate his roar...

At Tiger Safari India it is our endeavor to provide you with the best tiger safari holidays in India that have learning, adventure, and unlimited memories. We encourage you to store your experiences in form of videos and still photos which you will fondly go over at a later stage in life with friends, families, and your future generations.

While it is easy to capture people, landscapes, and monuments, capturing wildlife involves certain dynamics. The wildlife documentaries by channels are made with painstaking efforts covering months of filming in unhostile terrain, expensive equipment, special permissions from the authorities, weeks of post-production, and a great deal of resources. The end result is a dream setup. But this is not what you always see when you are on a tiger safari .

The videos below are shot by our team during a safari using a regular video camera, in a regular safari vehicle, no tripods, no extra permissions, and importantly during a 3-night stay in a national park. This is how you see tigers during a wildlife safari .

Tiger Safari India FAQs

Frequently asked questions.

Among the many national parks in India’s golden Triangle Zone, Kanha National Park and Ranthambore National Park offer incredibly fulfilling tiger tours. You get to visit many breathtaking locations and can embark on numerous types of tiger safaris. Read our blog on the best tiger reserves in India for tiger safaris .

The Jim Corbett National Park currently houses over 350 tigers of varying species. It is one of the largest and most densely populated tiger reserves in India . The park is frequented by tourists and is a major attraction among wildlife enthusiasts.

To know more about tiger tours in Jim Corbett National Park, contact Tiger Safari India.

Tiger safaris in India actually happen throughout the year, but it is recommended to plan a safari tour between the cooler months of October and March. Each and every National Park in India has dedicated tiger safari zones that remain open to the public in longer durations.

It is important to plan your tiger safaris in India a good five months in advance, as it will give top tiger tour operators, like Tiger Safari India , ample time to prepare the best possible trip for you.

The Kanha National Park, Bandhavgarh National Park, Ranthambore National Park and Jim Corbett National Park are the four most visited and most popular tiger reserves. Each park also brings with it a unique tiger safari experience. Bandhavgarh Tiger Reserve has the maximum tiger population and hence the chances of sighting increases.

Avoid bright colors and instead, pick a wardrobe of nature-inspired shades like greens and browns. Camouflage printed outfits are also a good option. Heavy jackets for winters as the temperature is lower in the jungle.

The Corbett Tiger Reserve is considered the best place to visit for a tiger safari experience as it accounts for the most number of tigers by population (over 252 tigers and counting) as of 2022.

The state of Madhya Pradesh is home to the most number of tigers. On the other hand, Corbett National Park & Tiger Reserve ranks the top with tiger count of 252 as of 2022. Read our blog on the Top 5 Tiger Reserves with the Highest Tiger Population in India .

'Quiet luxury' was once all about fashion — but now it describes how the top 1% travel too

  • Stealth wealth is spilling into the travel industry, as the rich increasingly forgo glitzy see-and-be-seen destinations, such as Capri, for more discreet getaways.
  • High-profile events are losing some luster too, as more opt for remote locations for mental health and family connection.

Heli-skiing on virgin snow in Antarctica for a cool $2.2 million. A polar bear safari in an "off-limits" area of Norway's Svalbard for $300,000. How about tracking snow leopards in the Himalayas with renowned explorers for $100,000?

Big-ticket travel experiences like those are indicative of the " quiet luxury " trend which began in the world of fashion, with timeless lines trumping brand-blaring outfits.

Now, stealth wealth is spilling into the travel industry, as one-percenters are increasingly forgoing glitzy see-and-be-seen destinations, such as Capri, for more discreet getaways.

Less limelight, more connection

Jaclyn Sienna India, the founder of the ultra-luxury travel company Sienna Charles , said she considers herself a longtime quiet luxury disciple.

While others may prefer the boulevards of Paris or the shores of Monaco, she escapes to Vietnam's Ho Chi Minh City once a year.

She said her clients are focused more than ever on their families, well-being and mental health "because the world is a lot more stressful." As a result, they seek more connection than limelight when they travel.

But another important aspect of the quiet luxury movement concerns security. Since celebrity homes have been a target for thieves of late, high-profile events like the Super Bowl are less attractive, India said.

Consequently, clients are seeking remote destinations, often at a moment's notice, she said.

"We just booked a billionaire family on an island in a villa in Brazil. Brazil is not a place that immediately comes to mind … But, to me, it's a place that still holds authenticity and soul. It's got great food and an incredible spa and wellness culture," India said.

Africa is another place where clients can seek solitude, she said. It was the choice of former U.S. President George W. Bush, whom she accompanied on a painstakingly organized personal trip to Ethiopia in 2015, she said.

Exclusivity and privacy

Roman & Erica is a luxury lifestyle company run by husband-and-wife team Erica Jackowitz and Roman Chiporukha. Jackowitz, a New York City native, compared quiet luxury to the understated elegance of cashmere, contrasting it with the Noughties trend of "wearing Chanel across your chest."

Jackowitz manages the lifestyle needs of 30 families, from politicians and tech CEOs to hedge fund executives, she said. For them, quiet luxury travel is about exclusivity and privacy, she said.

But the pandemic accelerated a desire among wealthy travelers to have meaningful experiences — which can range from requests for recommendations on where to take a quiet morning hike to organizing a game of tennis with Roger Federer, she said.

The next frontier

The business of catering to the ultra-rich comes with a fresh challenge: availability.

According to a 2023 Henley & Partners report, there are 28,420 centi-millionaires worldwide, which are those with investable assets of at least $100 million. That's nearly 12% more than 2022 estimates and twice the amount that existed in 2003 .

Jackowitz said her clients never opt for conventional cruises, as they prefer chartering private yachts. In fact, she said the booming charter market prevents many last-minute bookings.

"You're now competing with 10 other people traveling with friends and family," she said. "There are just so many more people who can afford these kinds of experiences."

That's leading moneyed travelers to search for new places for solitude, she said.

The next frontier? Space, she said.

For a client, Roman & Erica secured a place on the first all-private astronaut mission for $50 million, she said. Space travel is so sought after that Chiporukha founded a separate entity, SpaceVIP, to cater to the demand.

Space Perspective plans to start flying six-hour journeys to the edge of space aboard its spherical capsule next year. So far, 50% of bookings are for full capsules that seat eight people, according to the Florida-based company. The price tag: $1 million.

Wealthy travelers are seeking untraditional spots that lack cameras and crowds.
