The Horrors are an indie rock band that formed in 2005, in Southend on Sea, England. The band consists of Faris Badwan, Tom Cowan, Joshua Hayward, Joseph Spurgeon and Rhys Webb.

The band’s style has been largely debated, leading to quite a number of genres being thrown around, including indie rock, neo-psychedelia, post-punk revival, shoegaze, gothic rock, dream pop, garage punk and horror punk. An eclectic mix indeed!

The boys first joined forces in 2005, performing for small audiences in underground clubs across London and the South. The band’s first big live performance was at The Spread Eagle on Kingsland Road in London on 16 August 2005. The performance drew the attention of the public and critics alike and was the starting point of the band’s journey to success. In particular, their debut single ‘Sheena is a Parasite’ drew great acclaim. In August 2006, the band appeared on the cover of the NME and later performed at the awards tour, increasing their fame and fan following.

To date, the band has released four studio albums: ‘Strange House’ (2007), ‘Primary Colours’ (2009), ‘Skying’ (2011) and’ Luminous’ (2014). All four of their albums have done incredibly well both in the indie scene and with mainstream success, all charting within the UK top 40.

Artists with whom the band is comparable include the bands Toy, Cat’s Eyes and S.C.U.M, all of which are also relatively unknown.

Live reviews

The Horrors at the Bristol O2 was probably the best gig I've ever been to, no competition. They're categorically my favourite band of all time, and seeing them play, right by the barrier, in such a brilliant venue was one of the best experiences of my life. This band's music is indescribable, and to hear it live is an otherworldly experience. 'Sea Within A Sea' was breathtaking as usual, and the classic bangers such as 'Who Can Say' and 'Scarlet Fields' from 2009's Primary Colours drove the crowd insane. It was also amazing to hear stuff from their newest album, Luminous; 'Chasing Shadows' was especially brilliant. Songs from 2011's Skying were crowd-rousing too, and everyone singing along to 'Still Life' was one of the most beautiful things I've ever heard, even if everyone was a bit shouty and pitchy. Plus their live rendition of 'Moving Further Away' was spectacular, accompanied by a mind-blowing lightshow. I love seeing The Horrors play, because it's a chance to experience all the metamorphic changes they've made over the past decade or so in the space of an hour and a half. It was made even better by the outfit choice of guitarist Joshua Hayward, who came of stage in white builder's overalls (everyone went a bit mad at that point). Josh Hayward is mesmerizing to watch in general, especially when the song gets intense and he starts flailing about on stage. This, of course, is accompanied by the enigmatic presence of frontman Faris Badwan, who, without fail, manages to captivate the crowd every time. It felt like a privilege too to see the legendary Pyramid Synth in person; a synthesizer exclusively designed by the one and only Pete Fowler, of which there are only two in existence. The atmosphere at this gig was completely electric. You could feel the passion radiating off not only the band, but the hoards of fans packed into the relatively small venue. That's got to be one of my favourite things about gigs; you know everyone in the room is there for the same reason as you are - to see this band you're all so in love with. I should also add that the support band, Telegram, were brilliant too; I'd recommend them any day. In conclusion, if you ever get the chance to see The Horrors, DO IT.

The Horrors have come from a gothic, punk band from Southend-On-Sea to being one of the UK's leading synth-laden shoegaze, psychedelic bands of the noughties.

You can see they blend a whole range of genres together, reverberated guitars that pulsate along with the walls of the largest venues, intricate synths, heavy basslines and crashing drums. All along with Faris Badwan's almost scary vocals (suitable with a name like The Horrors) make for an exciting live show. You can expect a mirage of lights and a wall of sound rarely broken. They change their songs to suit a live setting, sometimes drawing them out to give a euphoria rarely seen by guitar driven bands.

In the smallest of venues they fit in well, with a more punky sound however have seem to set up in large venues recently with the release of their fourth full length album. They are well capable of playing arenas, although you may have to wait a while for that to happen. So for now, make sure you catch them in their smaller surroundings and make sure to catch the support bands, as they always pick a great lineup.

The Horrors put on a fantastic show, precisely because they are so incredibly eclectic in their style: their sound ranges from everything to indie rock, neo-psychedelia, post-punk revival, shoegaze, gothic rock, dream pop, garage punk and horror punk. With such an eclectic sound, it is easy to see why The Horrors put on such a terrific show. The bands played their classics such as ‘Scarlet Fields’ and ‘Who Can Say’ to the crowd’s delight. The audience was an insane bunch who took rocking to a whole new level. The lightshow on stage added to the atmosphere and created a crazy, fun and rocking vibe. The band members themselves are all crazy on stage, and move around as if they are on fire. Josh Hayward flayed around on stage like a crazy person and his guitar solos were out of this world. The frontman, Faris Badwan, is a force on stage and stirred the crowd into a frenzy, particularly when the band erupted into ‘Still Life’ and the entire audience began to sing along, extremely off key. Nonetheless it was a fantastic moment.

THe Horrors truly are a superb live band and in a relatively small venue such as the bierkeller packed to the low ceilings with die hard fans they truly shine. It was my first chance to hear them play tracks from their recent album V which were superb but it’s when the classics from Primary Colours were played that the audience truly lost it (in a good way). The only downside is the relatively short set of 12 tracks that lasted little over an hour. Let’s hope they come back with a bigger tour soon as I for one will bag tickets straight away.

I saw the horrors a few days ago in liverpool. Having been a fan for a few years, but never seen them live before, the experience was a lot to tale in. The setlist was a great mix of songs from the four most recent albums. The lighting was incredible, and perfectly in time with the songs. The sound this band makes is unlike anything else, furthered by their constant creative changes in sonic direction from album to album.

I would definitely recommend going to see this band live. It is an amazing experience both sonically and visually.

Amazing show. The sound, for me, was the same Horrors of old, which has been diluted a bit on more recent records, than have crisper, more polished production. Songs old and new sounded great. 4th time I've seen the band and I think it was the best. Up there as one of the best sets of the year, after Nick Cave (@ O2) and Thee Oh Sees (@ Field Day) out of 30 odd bands seen.

A great gig. Support band Baba Naga really impressed me with their doom-psych, each number being an extended offering. And the Horrors have never disappointe me in the three gigs of theirs I've seen, this time playing most of the best tracks from their new, fifth album, 'V', along with some crowd-pleasing favourites.

Another great performance from the Horrors who also took time to say hello to all their fans at the end. New album V is cleverly produced as it maintains the traditional Horrors sound with hints of 80s new wave but in a modern way. They deserve every success.

Khabarovsk, Russia

Khabarovsk, Russia

Tours, Attractions and Things To Do in Khabarovsk

Khabarovsk travel guide.

  • 1. Architecture
  • 2. Attractions
  • 3. Cultural life
  • 4. Souvenirs

Khabarovsk, Russia fascinates visitors with its unusual heritage and fabulous untouched nature. Tourists are drawn to the native culture, eclectic architecture and mesmerizing waters in this off-the-beaten-track destination, which promises a unique and memorable vacation.

As the center of Russia’s far eastern region of Khabarovsk Krai, the city offers celebrations throughout the year which are sure to give added flair to your trip, from traditional culture days to large-scale food fests. It is easy to keep a full itinerary during your stay thanks to its many theaters, museums, restaurants, workshops and quest rooms. Guests who want a more relaxed holiday can venture into the serenity of Khabarovsk nature, including the coast of the Sea of Japan or one of the region’s many picturesque lakes .

Khabarovsk Architecture

Khabarovsk, Russia

Khabarovsk architecture surprises with its harmonious blending of varying types and styles. This is due in large part to major changes which the city underwent in the mid-19th-early 20th centuries in conjunction with developments in the political, economic, scientific and technical spheres. The search for new trends in architecture came after the death of the classicism style, which had dominated the Russian Empire and the wider world for centuries. Beginning in the mid-19th century, the practice of mixing eclectic architectural styles began to emerge, leading to an era of amazing stylistic improvisations.

During the final decades of Romanov reign, many educational institutions for architects and engineers were opened. As a result, the face of numerous Russian cities began to change rapidly. Art Nouveau - a new, modern trend that absorbed several preceding styles – had come to dominate the architectural scene.

Many Art Nouveau buildings can still be seen in central Khabarovsk. These include:

  • Takeuchi apartment building (5 Muravyov-Amursky Street)
  • Esplanade Hotel (18 Muravyov-Amursky Street)
  • Luhta apartment building (84 Komsomolskaya Street)
  • Zandau apartment building (34 Muravyov-Amursky Street)

Khabarovsk also has many Gothic buildings, a style distinguished by its elegance and attention to detail. Every element of Gothic architecture emphasize a vertical orientation, as seen in the massive walls and columns, round arches and wide windows which contrast with narrow towers, pointed peaks and lancet windows.

Khabarovsk’s Gothic architecture is best represented by the artillery warehouse buildings located at 16 Komsomolskaya Street. Another notable example is the Red Guard Headquarters (105 Komsomolskaya Street), which has been preserved in its original form. The complex consists of two identical two-story brick buildings with unusual motifs containing pseudo-gothic elements.

Also of note is the early 20th-century Treasury Building, a luxurious red brick structure with openwork balconies that exudes an architectural grace.

Khabarovsk also has many Soviet-era buildings which were mostly designed in the constructivism style. Characterized by their enormous size and grotesque shapes, they often occupy most of the block and dominate the surrounding space.

During your Khabarovsk excursion, be sure to appreciate its unique architectural heritage by going for a walk downtown .

Khabarovsk Attractions

Khabarovsk, Russia

The layout of Khabarovsk is very simple: its 3 main streets of Lenin, Muravyov-Amursky and Seryshev pass through the downtown area, while Ussuriysky and Amur Boulevards run perpendicular to them. A distinctive feature of Khabarovsk are its many hills, so we recommend wearing comfortable shoes for your walk.

Begin your walking tour of Khabarovsk from the train station, where you can see the monument to Yerofey Khabarov, the famous explorer for whom the city is named. Nearby is a sculpture of a double-headed eagle, erected in memory of soldiers, officers and builders of the Far Eastern Railway. Moving from the station along Amur Boulevard you will reach the central market, just past which is Lenin Square. A spacious area with a granite fountain in the center, it is the main plaza of Khabarovsk and the site of the city’s Christmas and New Year celebrations. Next to the square is Dynamo Park, famous for its three ponds and Ferris wheel.

From Lenin Square, move along Muravyov-Amursky Street to reach Amur Embankment, passing most of Khabarovsk’s famous 19th-20th century buildings along the way. Descend to the embankment via two grand staircases or make a small detour onto Shevchenko Street, where you can follow the slope until you reach the embankment’s main stretch. Among other things, the area is home to the House of Officers and three museums.

As you move along the embankment through a park you will come across the city symbol of Khabarovsk, a building set on a steep cliff above the Amur River. It was at the foot of this cliff that the founders of a military post, the first semblance of civilization in the area, first landed.

After reaching the river and walking along Ussuriysky Boulevard to Turgenev Street, turn right to reach Glory Square. Here you will find another famous Khabarovsk landmark, Transfiguration Cathedral, along with a magnificent view of the Amur River and its dreamy islands. Glory Square concludes the main walking route of Khabarovsk, but from here you can reach any part of the city by public transport or taxi .

Khabarovsk Cultural Life

Khabarovsk, Russia

Khabarovsk entertainment centers around its many theaters and museums. Visit Khabarovsk Museum of Local Lore to get a better glimpse of city and regional life. Children and adults alike will want to visit Fishes of Amur River Museum, an aquarium which is home to some 90 species of the underwater world. To catch the vibe of local artists, head to the Far Eastern Art Museum.

There are several theaters in Khabarovsk, each of which is worth visiting:

  • Khabarovsk Regional Puppet Theater;
  • Triad Pantomime Theater;
  • Khabarovsk Regional Philharmonic;
  • White Theater, and others.

In addition, Khabarovsk offers several concert halls, culture houses, cinemas and art institutions .

Khabarovsk Souvenirs

While the city’s souvenir selection is not as diverse as in other Russian cities, guests can still find something suited to their tastes on their tour to Khabarovsk. Amur River and the Sea of Japan offer an abundance of seafood that can be tasted on the spot or brought home in dried or smoked form. Yet it is the rich culture of the local indigenous peoples which provides the largest selection of national souvenirs.

If you’re looking for an original gift, traditional Nanai slippers are comfortable and warm. Sewn from leather or fabric and decorated in a bright, colorful style before being trimmed with fur, they make the perfect house shoes in winter. Traditional decorations include amulets which are made from animal bones, fur or fabrics and decorated with ribbons and colored beads.

Standard souvenirs like plates, magnets, mugs and flasks stamped with images of Khabarovsk or its coat of arms can be purchased in souvenir shops, which are mostly located downtown and at the airport and railway station.

The Real Story of the Band That Inspired ‘Daisy Jones and the Six’

The Big Picture

  • Daisy Jones and the Six is a fun trip back in time to the cultural revolution of rock 'n' roll, following a young singer-songwriter's journey to musical icon status.
  • The series is based on the real-life story of Fleetwood Mac, with the author inspired by the band's ability to act like they were in love after a brutal breakup.
  • Fleetwood Mac's rise to fame was fueled by hit singles and world recognition, but the newfound pressures, drug use, and romantic conflicts caused tension and eventually led to the band's downfall.

Daisy Jones and the Six introduced fans to the drug-fueled disco drama of a fictional rock band. The series is a fun trip back in time to the cultural revolution of rock 'n' roll, following a young singer-songwriter named Daisy ( Riley Keough ) on her journey from a shy girl to a musical icon. Told in flashbacks through a behind-the-scenes interview, the members of the fictional band recount their turbulent rise to stardom as they deal with the immense pressures and conflicts that come with success in the music industry.

The series is based on the book of the same name , but what you might not know is that the book is inspired by the real-life story of one of history's greatest bands: Fleetwood Mac . The author, Taylor Jenkins Reid , was first inspired by the band when she saw them perform in the 1990s. She was confounded by Stevie Nicks and Lindsay Buckingham 's performance and their ability to act like they were in love after a brutal breakup. She stated that she "wanted to write a story about that, about how the lines between real life and performance can get blurred, about how singing about old wounds might keep them fresh." Daisy Jones and the Six tells its own heartbreaking story as the characters deal with the chaos of fame and struggle with addiction, and Fleetwood Mac's history is similar enough for the connection to be clear. So, what is the real story behind the iconic band that inspired the series?

Daisy Jones & The Six

'daisy jones and the six's inspiration had humble beginnings.

Stevie Nicks, the inspiration for Daisy, grew up moving around the American Southwest, where her grandfather taught her to sing duets as she fostered an appreciation for music. After receiving a guitar for her 16th birthday, she joined a folk band from her high school. Soon after, she found Lindsey Buckingham, the inspiration for Billy ( Sam Claflin ) in the series, playing piano at a local venue and joined him in singing. The pair began their relationship, and soon, high school was over. This is significantly changed in the series , but the two storylines come together later.

Similar to the events of the show, Buckingham's band was breaking up because some of its members were leaving for college. So, he and Nicks became a musical duo , dropping out of university to pursue their dreams. After the failure of their first album, they worked odd jobs while continuing to write. The characters meet differently in the series as each separately draws interest from music producer Teddy Price ( Tom Wright ), who brings them together for a collaboration against Billy's wishes. Through popular demand, the collaboration soon becomes permanent. However, the next part of the story is much more like Fleetwood Mac's experience.

It was at this point that Nicks and Buckingham first started using cocaine, unaware of its addictive nature and the role it would play in their lives to come. Meanwhile, across the pond, a small blues band, Fleetwood Mac, was looking for a guitarist when they heard a track from Nicks and Buckingham's album. When they invited Buckingham to join, he insisted that the two of them were a package deal, so they had an initial rehearsal, and the rest is history!

Fleetwood Mac Skyrocketed to Newfound Fame

In 1975, the band released their first album, Fleetwood Mac , and quickly skyrocketed to fame. With several hit singles from a single album, the band gained worldwide recognition, and one of Nicks' songs, "Rhiannon," would later be named one of the top five hundred greatest songs of all time . For a while, the gang was riding high with two couples in the band: Nicks and Buckingham and John and Christine McVie . Like Fleetwood Mac, Daisy Jones and the Six has several complex relationships that contribute to the band falling apart. During this time, record sales were through the roof for Fleetwood Mac, and their label was eager to see what they would do next. However, things began to rapidly deteriorate. The newfound pressures of fame and the need to produce a new album created tension between everyone in the group, fueled by drugs and alcohol. The McVies' marriage ended, as did drummer Mick Fleetwood 's, followed by Buckingham and Nicks' split and her subsequent affair with Fleetwood .

The group channeled the chaos and conflict around them into a new and even more successful record: Rumors . This album elevated them even further as their fame reached new heights, with the album eventually becoming the eighth-highest-selling record in history. Like Fleetwood Mac , Rumors also had several massive hits. Many of the songs dealt with the realities of the complex struggles the musicians were facing as they sang about the loss of love, fame, and addiction, much like the series' Aurora , which was created with the same style of music.

The romantic conflicts between band members were heightened by their use of cocaine , which had become a staple of their lives due to their new wealth and inability to cope with their sudden fame. Nicks recalls that during the production of their second album, she and Christine McVie wore "little beautiful coke bottles" around their necks. Although the whole band was addicted, Nicks had the hardest time shaking her addiction, to the point where her bandmates asked her to visit rehab, where doctors replaced cocaine with Valium and other drugs meant to curb her addiction. After almost losing her eyesight due to a 48-hour bender, she finally realized that sobriety was the only way she would survive her battle with drugs.

'Daisy Jones and the Six' Reaches the End of An Era

At this point, things were grim, with Fleetwood filing for bankruptcy and half the band dealing with serious medical side effects of their heavy drug use. It was rumored that Fleetwood Mac had disbanded. After the release of another album, Buckingham felt his creativity had been stifled, and after a tumultuous group meeting in which there was a physical altercation between Buckingham and Nicks, Buckingham left the band. Over the next few decades, Nicks pursued a solo career while staying in the band as members came and went, but they would not capture lightning in a bottle twice. While Daisy Jones and the Six follows a similar trajectory, it ends differently , as the warring bandmates are reunited through a series of interviews much later.

'Daisy Jones and the Six's Inspiration Is Clear

The tensions, emotions, and drugs are not unique to Fleetwood Mac, but there is a distinct connection between Daisy Jones and the Six and the famed band. Not only was the book author inspired by Fleetwood Mac's performance, but others have recognized it. Nicks herself took to Twitter , saying, "It brought back memories that made me feel like a ghost watching my own story." She further stated that she wished her late bandmate, Christine McVie, could have seen it. Such a reaction from the woman who inspired Daisy Jones shows how closely these stories are related. The electric interactions between Daisy and Billy caught more than the attention of fans. Nicks later commented that the thing that she saw herself in most was "the kind of snappy sarcasm between Daisy and Billy, who in my mind was like me and Lindsey [Buckingham]." The series is largely fictional, but this spark of reality cemented the realism in it.

Nicks saw the connection to her own life, though she seemed to hesitate at first. Yet by the end, she praised the series, saying, "That’s exactly why Fleetwood Mac stayed together for 50 years. It was all for the music. It was all just to keep the music going, and the show got it." Lindsey Buckingham played more coy, posting a video from the famed concert on social media to acknowledge the discussion while saying little about the series. Still, this response suggests he recognizes the series references his life.

It is clear to see why the history of Fleetwood Mac served as perfect fodder for Daisy Jones and the Six . Buckingham and Nicks' relationship is the beautiful yet heartbreaking story of two artists torn apart by the pressures of fame and the pitfalls that come with it. Their story is one of dreams, both achieved and broken as they shared their stories with the world, for better or worse. The series did a fascinating job of reinterpreting their story and bringing it to the screen , and although we know how the book ends, the series unfolds in a different way in its addressing of themes of addiction, loss, and, of course, great music.

Daisy Jones and the Six is available to stream on Prime Video.
