For Bengalis who left their home in Bangladesh, a new tour can take them to their desher bari

By Diya Kohli

Barisal, Sylhet, Jessore, Rajshahi, Mymensingh—real places in Bangladesh with the magic power of opening portals into imaginary homelands by mere utterance alone. For many in West Bengal, these are the markers of a home left behind in the aftermath of an en-masse migration. And one remembered through stories told by grandparents evoking bucolic summers, festivities, and feasts.

Now a travel company in Kolkata will not only help you visit this place from your stories, it will also trace your familial roots down to the exact latitude-longitude based on the information you give them. The Desher Bari tour by Immersive Trails aims to trace roots and ancestry in a country that was once home and subsequently lost in the redrawing of maps. For many Bengalis in West Bengal, and elsewhere in the world, the desher bari or the ancestral country home exists across the border—in Bangladesh.

Retracing Roots

The Partition of India redrew maps, displacing millions of people. In the case of Bangladesh, this migration continued for years from the 1940s, through the Indo-Pak war of 1971, right up to recent times. And in the making of these new borders, the erstwhile homes became an idea representing both loss and belonging. The surviving members of a generation who still remembered the architecture, history, and geography of their familial homes, told their stories to the next generation. With each telling and the passage of time, the desher bari became a myth where both the desh (the country) and the bari (home) were lost to the churn of history. Yet, for successive generations, this imaginary homeland and the home became a way to understand their past and present.

This tour is a research and legacy-based programme conceptualised by Immersive Trails to address this need. The company translates in-depth, ethical research into on-ground and virtual experiences. Founded by two academics—Dr. Tathagata Neogi, an ethnographer plus archaeologist by training and his wife Chelsea Mcgill, a linguistic anthropologist—Immersive Trails takes the rigour of research and brings it into the world of travel. “We wanted to take our training and research-based approach outside the halls of academia into the real world. This was also a chance for students in humanities-based disciplines to have an alternative mode of livelihood as these departments have very little funding,” says Neogi.

Their focused tours around Kolkata include a Bengal Rising Walk which takes guests into the back alleys of Bidhan Sarani to trace the Bengal Renaissance and the beginnings of the armed freedom movement in India. A Chasing Calcutta’s Ghosts Walk traces the eerie stories that haunt the city, placing them in the context of Kolkata’s past and comes with a curated graphic novel. Further afield, Immersive Trails has set up a team in Bangladesh comprising PhD students in anthropology and history and have crafted tours across the country.

The Desher Bari tour is part of this cross-border enterprise which aims to give people a chance to visit their erstwhile ancestral country home. At the very least, it allows a generation of millennials to learn more about their history through the research that is presented to you after you sign up. Once guests enrol, they have several rounds of video calls with researchers on the team where they share information, anecdotes, photographs and snippets of remembered history. This becomes the starting point for the team, which then delves into government archives and travels onward to the places in question to trace these individual histories. Through their network of village unions and local contacts, they pinpoint your ancestral place and create a report of its present status complete with detailed pictures and information. For many, this is sufficient, while others move on to the next phase to plan their trip there. At this point, the company comes on board to arrange all logistics and assigns a team member to enable the journey. The tour is completely bespoke with travel and stay arranged according to budgets. In remote districts away from towns and cities, arrangements are made for accommodation at a village home.

The fact that this bit of history is a missing piece for many born in post-Partition India, is reflected in the number of enquiries Immersive Trails has got for this tour since its recent launch in May. “Most people asking for the research are those in their 20s and 30s,” says Neogi. And for all of them this present or absent desher bari matters.

  • Dates & Prices

This short Moscow tour will give you a true taste of the history, culture and incomparable urban vibe that define one of the world’s largest metropolises. In just three days, this Moscow itinerary takes in all the most iconic sights of this attraction-packed destination. After two and half days getting acquainted with the city, we’ve set time aside for you to explore Moscow your way and discover your own favourite hang-outs in a city overflowing with hidden treasures

3-Day Moscow Tour Highlights:

  • Panoramic Tour of Moscow: See Moscow beyond the postcard images on a private excursion by car through the city streets including a drive along the banks of the Moskva River. Visit the famous Bolshoi Theatre, pass by Gorky Park and the Novodevichy Convent, and admire the city from on high at the Sparrow Hill observation platform.
  • Moscow Historical City Centre Guided Walking Tour : Immerse yourself in the atmosphere of one of the world’s biggest metropolises and discover local haunts on foot, including the Red Square, the Kremlin and the multi-coloured domes of St Basil’s Cathedral.
  • Armory Chamber tour: Explore the endless treasures of this unique museum, displaying the wealth accumulated by Russian rulers from the 12th century until the October Revolution of 1917. Walking through the exhibition halls is a journey through the centuries.
  • Moscow Metro Tour : Go deep underground on a subway tour of the famous Moscow metro. The world’s deepest metro system is renowned for its palatial, art-adorned stations, complete with marble columns and chandeliers.

On your first day, you’ll be treated to a panoramic, drive-by tour of Moscow to get a feel for the immense scale of one of the world’s most rapidly developing urban centres. The city’s history unfolds in real-time as you pass lavish imperial mansions, solemn Soviet structures and luxurious modern shopping centres.

Day two kicks off exploring Moscow’s historic centre on foot, followed by a tour of the Kremlin, the seat of Russian power and political intrigue for centuries. Stand in the Red Square, surrounded by the stunning architecture as you hear stories of the people and events behind many of Moscow’s most iconic landmarks.

On your final day, we’ll head beneath the city for a tour of the Moscow Metro and its famously ornate underground stations. Art lovers should hit up one of Moscow’s many world-class galleries such as the Tretyakov State Gallery, the Pushkin Museum or Garage, Moscow’s cutting-edge contemporary art museum. History fans can follow a Soviet trail through the city including Stalin’s Bunker, while those seeking a more indulgent experience can browse trendy neighbourhoods like Kitay Gorod or shop for everything from fashion to kitsch souvenirs at the enchanting Izmaylovo Flea Market. Foodies can head to one of the countless speciality stores sampling vodka, caviar and chocolate.

If you only have a few days to spend in Moscow, this tour will ensure you make the most of your time in the city. Let the experts navigate you through this complex and occasionally overwhelming capital, giving you plenty of time to soak up the city’s most unmissable attractions.

Russia Moscow Tour

Day 1 Panoramic city tour

Welcome to the glorious capital of Russia, Moscow! You’ll be met by your driver at the airport and taken to your centrally located hotel.

After check-in and rest, meet your private guide at the hotel lobby for a comprehensive tour of Moscow by car. Visit the starkly contrasting Theatre Square to see the stunning Bolshoi Theatre, pass Tverskaya Street, the city’s main boulevard and home to the landmark Yeleseyevskiy Grocery Store.

You’ll enjoy a panoramic drive along the Moskva River, where a huge, controversial state of Peter the Great was erected. Pass by the legendary Gorky Park and the White House before a stop at the architecturally stunning Novodevichy Convent, and the observation platform at Sparrow Hills, for a bird’s eye view over this staggering megalopolis.

Day 2 Red Square and Kremlin

After breakfast at the hotel, your guide will take you on a walking tour of the historical city centre. Stroll through the Red Square, the hub of cultural life in Moscow, with its elaborate ‘stone flower’ fountain and fantasy-like St Basil’s Cathedral – a postcard-perfect symbol of the nation. Admire the grandiose façade of GUM, the city’s most luxurious shopping centre, and visit Alexander’s Garden, with its eternal flame and the chance to watch a changing of the guards.

Break for lunch before continuing on a tour of the Kremlin and Armoury Chamber, famous of its collection of tsarist fashion, with regalia such as jewel-encrusted crowns, orbs and sceptres as well as arms and armour, exotic gifts from the leaders of faraway lands, and an illustrious case of Imperial Faberge eggs.

As an option* spend an evening on a sumptuous dinner cruise, taking in the stunning sights and city lights of this mesmerising metropolis by night.

Day 3 Metro and Arbat Street

Start a day with a tour of Metro, stopping on the way to marvel at some of the most elaborately decorated stations of the world-famous Moscow subway system. Take a stroll along Old Arbat street - the most famous street in Moscow. Through the centuries Arbat used to be one of the most bohemian places in Moscow. Today Arbat is a promenade full of small cozy cafes and street life.

The afternoon is free for you to either enjoy the rest of the day on your own or choose among optional excursions to explore more of Moscow. Visit the Tretyakov Gallery or Pushkin State Museum to admire Russian art. Join locals for a stroll at the Gorky or VDNH park.

Visit beautiful Kolomeskoye Estate or Izmailovo Kremlin, or spend a day exploring the beautiful city of the Golden Ring (Russian province) - Sergiev Posad. In the evening you will be transferred to the airport for your departure to your next destination.

What is swisstainable a rail tour of switzerland reveals the answer.

Tour guide Rob Early (left) with John and Dianna Mellers on a train from Visp, Switzerland to ... [+] Geneva.

Dianna and John Mellers had no idea what Swisstainable meant until they landed in Zürich for a one-week train tour of Switzerland.

That’s when their tour guide, Rob Early, started to talk about Switzerland's ambitious sustainability initiatives meant to encourage visitors to experience nature, Swiss culture, local products — and to stay longer.

The Swiss even have a word for it: Swisstainable .

"We didn't realize we were on a sustainability tour," says John Mellers, an engineer from Oviedo, Fla.

It's a common reaction. Technically, Mellers and his wife were on Trafalgar's Contrasts of Switzerland tour. But it's a rail tour with an agenda. Along the way, there are stops that showcase Switzerland's next-level commitment to sustainability, including in Zürich , Switzerland's financial capital, St. Moritz, Zermatt, Geneva and Lucerne.

It turns out Swisstainability is a thing, with clearly defined goals that challenge the way visitors think about their environment. Organizers hope tour participants will come away with ideas about how to improve sustainability back home, but it is all done in such an understated way that if you're not paying attention, you could miss the message.

Trafalgar already had a popular one-week train tour, but when Switzerland rolled out its Swisstainable designation, it saw an opportunity to explore ways to reduce its footprint even further. It decided to turn its train tour into a Swisstainable adventure.

How do you make a tour Swisstainable?

  • Use the train. In the past, guests' luggage didn't come on the train with them because there was no storage space. Instead, Trafalgar used trucks to transport the suitcases to the next hotel. In becoming a Swisstainable tour, it found a way to also have the luggage delivered by train.
  • Emphasize local food. Most of the meals on Trafalgar's Swisstainable itinerary are locally sourced or from the neighboring region. Most of the food is organic and the majority of restaurant providers have some sort of management system in place to reduce, recycle or upcycle their waste. The whole point of sustainability in tourism is making it accessible for guests so that it is enjoyable.
  • Screen your partners. The tour operator also screened its hotel and restaurant partners to make sure they were dedicated to sustainability. Switzerland offers numerous ways to certify a company's sustainability. Trafalgar says it was keen to reduce the impact of its passengers while promoting local food and experiences.

But what's it like to be on a sustainability tour?

Maxime Sother, owner of Château de Malessert, an organic winery near Geneva, Switzerland.

What does a Swisstainable tour do?

Trafalgar's Swisstainable tour shows off some of Switzerland's marquee destinations with a sustainability angle. Among the highlights are Switzerland's famous Glacier Express, which has a strong reputation for sustainability, and Zermatt, which has banned gas-powered vehicles in the city.

There's also a tour of Château de Malessert, a sustainable family winery near Geneva. Maxime Sother, the winery's owner, says when he took over in 2020, he removed chemical pesticides and created his own oak barrels in an effort to become sustainable.

As he wrapped up a tour of his family farm on a recent summer afternoon, Sother said the goal wasn't to create a wine that people wanted to enjoy because they were sustainable, but to make wines that were excellent — and happened to be sustainable.

"It has to be good wine," he says.

For visitors from the United States, it's sometimes difficult to wrap their heads around the sustainability imperatives driving Swiss tourism. They struggle to understand why there are no washcloths in their bathrooms or why there is a $5 deposit for a second room key. (If you don't return it to be recycled, they charge you $5.)

"But then there's that lightbulb moment," says Early, the Trafalgar tour guide.

It can happen any time. On the Mellers' tour in late June, it was the moment participants saw the flooded Matter Vispa River in the iconic ski area of Zermatt.

Other times, it happens more slowly — as in, during the eight-hour train ride on the iconic Glacier Express train between St. Moritz and Zermatt. There, you can see the magnificent glaciers of the Swiss Alps, which are slowly receding as temperatures warm. If you're a skier, you can bemoan the fact that year-round skiing, long a staple of the Swiss mountain experience, may soon be a thing of the past.

Early says a Swisstainability tour is full of "aha" moments when many group members understand that climate change is happening. There's a sense of urgency that if the tourism industry doesn't get sustainability right, there might not be anything left to sustain.

The Glacier Express near St. Moritz, Switzerland.

Taking sustainability ideas home

Early says people want to take some of the ideas home with them.

"There's the 'I wish they did this in America' moment," he says.

Most of those comments are reserved for the Swiss railroad system. It is fast, efficient, expensive and runs on 95% sustainable energy. When a flooded river and a train accident disrupted the Mellers' rail tour on several occasions, the Swiss railroads were lightning-fast in their recovery.

"I really liked the Swiss trains," says Dianna Mellers, who has traveled throughout Europe by rail. "They were really the best we've seen."

John Mellers says he was impressed by Switzerland's sustainability efforts and that many were import-worthy. Mellers, who works in the energy sector, says there's a tendency elsewhere to impose ideas about sustainability — particularly green energy — on other places. He says he was impressed by the way Switzerland leaned toward hydroelectric and nuclear power, both of which are non-carbon-emitting forms of energy.

But Switzerland's ideas suggest a more incremental approach to sustainability that could be copied by other destinations.

A low-key approach to sustainability

Like the Swiss themselves, a Swisstainability tour is modest and understated. There are no declarations of impending doom or lectures about destroying the planet. It's more "show" than "tell."

And really, all it takes to change your mind about sustainability is a week spent using Switzerland's fast and always-punctual trains. Or seeing a disappearing glacier. Or witnessing firsthand what an alpine village without cars feels like.

Sadly, some Swiss sustainability initiatives are unlikely to gain traction elsewhere. For example, the country's almost obsessive recycling programs probably would never work in the United States. And banning gas-powered cars from a city might be impractical in most major tourist destinations.

If nothing else, Switzerland's low-key approach to sustainability is a worthy tourist attraction in and of itself. And in a time when some people are thoughtlessly booking the same old vacations, what's the harm in challenging your conventions?

This is part two of a series on sustainable tourism in Switzerland. Here’s part one on Zürich’s sustainability efforts. Next up: Grindelwald tries to take sustainability to new heights.

Lena, our guide in Moscow was excellent. She was very knowledgable and could answer any question we had for her. We liked that she could pick up on our interests and take us places we might not have thought of to go. When we realized that one of the places we had chosen to see would probably not be that interesting to us, she was able to arrange entry to the Diamond Fund and the Armoury for us. Riding the Metro with Lena was a real adventure and a lot of fun. In Saint Petersburg we found Anna well versed in the history of the Tsars and in the Hermitage collection. Arkady in Veliky Novgorod was a very good guide and answered all of our questions with ease. Novgorod was perhaps a long way to go for a day trip, but we did enjoy it. Vasily was a great driver to have and kept us safe with good humour and skill. We enjoyed ourselves so much, my daughter says she is already planning to return. We would both have no hesistation to recommend ExpresstoRussia to anyone we know.

Just wanted to let you know that My grandson Bruno and I couldn´t have been more pleased with our week in Moscow (6/15 - 6/21). We were absolutely enchanted with the whole experience, including getting lost a couple of times in the Metro during our free time. Although both our guides (both Eleanas) were excellent, I would particularly commend the first one (she took us to the Tatiakov, the KGB tour, and to that beautiful cemetery where so many great Russian artists, authors, composers, musicians, militarists, and politicians are buried). Her knowledge is encyclopedic; and her understanding of today´s Russia as a product of its past was, for us, truly enlightening. I will be taking another tour in Russia, with my wife, within the next two or three years. I will be in touch with you when the time comes. Meanwhile, I will refer you to other potential visitors to Russia as I meet them.

Moscow, a City Like No Other

Moscow is Russia’s largest city with a population of between 12 and 13 million. It is also Europe’s largest city and when you visit Moscow, you can feel it. The layout and architecture of the city is eclectic, ranging from crooked, ancient streets and alleyways to wide, bustling boulevards, from medieval churches to Stalin skyscrapers and to modern, glass buildings towering over everything and of course in the center of it all is the Kremlin and the magnificent Red Square. Moscow is also home to a fantastic, efficient and very beautiful metro system – each station having its own special design. In fact, Express to Russia’s Moscow metro tours and excursions are some of our most popular attractions that we offer. On our Moscow tours, you will see this and more.

Moscow Tours centering on Russian History

Moscow has a long and interesting history and has been the capital of Russia in many of its different iterations – capital of the Grand Duchy of Moscow , the Russian Empire and of course the Soviet Union (who could ever forget the Soviet Union?). Moscow, was founded in the 12th century by Prince Yuri Dolgaruki (Yuri of the long arms – he really did have long arms!). From that time on, it was home to the Russian Tsars until Peter the Great moved the capital to St. Petersburg in 1703. The city has survived invasions and sieges from the Mongols, the Tartars, the Poles, Lithuanians and Napoleon but has always persevered. Our Moscow tours will enlighten you on this great history and give you insights into Muscovites and their unique culture. Our Moscow tours show you what the city is like today but also brings to life the past. Moscow never seems to sleep and is bursting with energy. A Moscow tour with Express to Russia is truly the best way of getting to know Russia’s largest and most vibrant city.

Frequently Asked Questions From Our Travelers

What is the best time to visit moscow.

Any time of year is fine depending on what you plan to do. Summertime is pleasantly warm, ideal for exploring the city and its vibrant atmosphere, but Moscow will be much busier and accommodation is more expensive. Winter can be quite cold but beautiful nonetheless, and this is unproblematic if you intend to spend most of your trip in museums and galleries. There are also various festivals and events organised throughout the year. For more information about the best time to visit, read our guide

How many days are enough in Moscow?

If you plan your itinerary strategically and aren’t averse to a packed schedule, you can cover Moscow’s main sights over a long weekend. Most popular attractions are in the city centre, and the Moscow Metro allows you to cover much ground in a small amount of time. Ensure that your accommodation is fairly central and book tickets in advance, so that you can make the most of your days. For an informative and well-organised day out, check out our Moscow day tours with options to suit all interests.

Do they speak English in Moscow?

As Russia’s capital city, tourists are well accommodated in Moscow. There should be English-speaking staff in restaurants, bars, hotels, shops and attractions in tourist hotspots, and there are also English-speaking tourist police. Transport services have English translations on their maps and English announcements via intercom; alternatively, order taxis from the Yandex Taxi app (Russian Uber), though it’s unlikely that your taxi driver will speak English. If you get stuck and cannot communicate, it’s fine to use Google Translate.

Is it safe to travel to Moscow?

It is no less safe to travel to Moscow than to any European city if you exercise common sense and look after your belongings. As with every city some regions can be more unsavoury than others, but no tourist attractions are located there. The traffic in Moscow is notorious, so exercise caution when crossing roads. Do not take unlicensed taxis; book in advance or take public transport, which is widespread and perfectly safe. If you encounter any problems, look for the special tourist police who can help you. 2024 rocket mortgage classic prize money payouts for each pga tour player at detroit golf club, share this article.

Aussie Cam Davis made more money in four days in Detroit than he had made in his previous 16 PGA Tour starts this season.

Davis, 29, closed in 70 and won the Rocket Mortgage Classic for the second time in his career . In doing so, he took home $1.656 million from a purse of $9.2 million. Davis hadn’t recorded a top-10 finish all season. His best result was a T-12 at the Masters in April. His season earnings soared to $3,061,884.

Akshay Bhatia was the hard-luck loser after missing a 5-foot par putt at 18. If it’s any consolation, the 22-year-old surpassed $8 million in career earnings, which is making his decision to skip college look like a wise one.

Aaron Rai, a 54-hole co-leader, settled for T-3 but passed Jack Nicklaus ($5,734,031) on the career money list. Among those at T-3 was 25-year-old Aussie Min Woo Lee, who crossed $5 million in career earnings.

Cameron Young (73) cracked the shaft of his driver in anger on the 14 th hole and settled for a T-6 finish. It wasn’t all bad news for Young, who is still seeking his first Tour title. He did pass major winners Steve Elkington, Corey Pavin and Bob Tway on the career money list as he neared $16 million in earnings.
