New Workshops
Since 2000 I’ve been leading hands-on shooting workshops all over the U.S. and around the world. They’ve ranged from long weekends to two-week adventures on the other side of the earth. Group sizes vary based on the trip, but my goals are always the same – to help you improve as a photographer, come back with pictures you’ll want to share and hang on your wall while having fun and memorable experiences. To me, photography is a great social activity, and more enjoyable when done with people who share a passion for it. These are the classes and trips I have scheduled right now, with new ones added as they’re planned. At the bottom of the page you’ll find a link to galleries of photos from past workshops. If you’d like to be notified as soon as a trip I’m working on (at the bottom of the page, “Future Workshops”) is ready for registration, just use the “Contact” button above to send me an email.
Sports Photography, July 14-19, 2024, Birmingham, AL – I’ve been volunteering my photography to Move United (the largest disabled sports organization in the country) for over ten years now. Each summer they run a week-long sports festival that has athlets competing in track and field, swimming, wheelchair rugby, shooting and many, many other sports. Quite different from most workshops I lead, this is limited to just three students and you’ll split your time between working alongside me and covering events on your own. Those three spots are currently filled, but let me know if you’re interested in being contacted if someone has to cancel.
Page and Monument Valley, August 26-31, 2024 – I led this trip in 2019, and have been trying to make it happen again since then. Horseshoe Bend, slot canyons, crazy-looking rock formations and Monument Valley – not just during the day, but with a Navajo guide at night! Oh, and did I mention Bryce Canyon? Here’s a story I wrote about that trip in 2019. And here are the details for this one. It just sold out, but let me know if you’d like to be on the waiting list in case of a cancellation.
South Dakota, September 8-13, 2024 – Want a photo trip that’s pretty unique, to places not a lot of photographers go? Then this might be for you. We’ll split our time between Custer State Park and the Badlands, and I think you’ll be pleasantly surprised at the variety of nice pictures to be made. I’ve led this trip twice before, and each time made adjustments to make it better and better. Here’s a story I wrote about one of those trips, in 2021. And here are the details for this one, let me know if you’re interested in taking itcoming along
Acadia, October 15-20, 2024, Bar Harbor, ME – Acadia National Park is one of the most diverse and compact in our country’s national parks system, making it a great place for photographers. Pair that with the town of Bar Harbor and it gets even better. I led this last in 2021, and here’s a story I wrote about that trip . The schedule is mostly the same ( here are all the details ) , and with a little luck, we’ll have some fall foliage to go with everything else we’re doing. There’s just one spot left, so let me know if you want it. After that, I’ll start taking names for a waiting list.
Moab, November 12-17, 2024, Moab, UT – Year-after-year, this is one of the most popular trips I lead. We’ll spend time in both Arches and Canyonlands National Parks, plus visiting Dead Horse Point and Goblin Valley State Parks as well as some pretty unique less-visited locations. One of the big draws to this trip is that we do night photography every evening we’re there, which makes for some amazing photos. Here’s a story and photos from last year’s trip, and here are the details for this November’s . It recently sold out, but let me know if you’re interested in being on the waitlist, in case of a cancellation.
Patagonia, December 5-17, 2024 – Two fabulous ecosystems in one trip. We’ll start by exploring the unique Atacama desert area of Chile, including the Rainbow Valley, the Moon Valley, petroglyphs, salt flats (flamingos!), lagoons, geysers, small towns and more. Then we head to the world famous Torres del Paine National Park, with its mountains, glaciers and wildlife. A bit longer than most of the trips I lead, it’s going to be a great adventure! You can find all the details, here , and there are just one or two spots still available, so contact me if you’re interested. Sometimes people have to cancel and a spot or two opens up.
Iceland in Winter, February 16-25, 2025 – Iceland in winter is even more spectacular than summer, plus we should see some awesome Northern Lights activity. It’s not as cold as you might think (temps average around 30-degrees), and winter also means we can work sunrise and sunset (in the summer those come very early and very late). Ice caves, glaciers, glacial lagoons, black sand and “diamond” beaches, waterfalls and more. I led this trip with the same great guide, Einar, in 2019, and you can see a story about that here . All the details about the 2025 trip are here. It’s selling out fast, so contact me if you’re interested.
Jewels of the South, Savannah and Charleston, March 2-7, 2025 – I ran this trip in March of 2024 with an old friend and photographer who’s lived there his entire life, and it was great. Not only will we visit a bunch of beautiful locations , you’ll also learn a lot about the area from my partner, Bill, who also taught the Nikon School of Photography for over 20 years. Here’s a story and photos from that trip in 2024, and here are the details for the 2025 trip . Half of the spots are already taken for this one, so contact me if you’re interested.
Sloss Furnaces, Birmingham, AL, April 14-17, 2025 – I’m apppy to announce that we’re once again able to ofer a very unique workshop on the grounds of an old iron mill from the 1800s. We’ll have special accesss – both day and night – at Sloss Furnaces, a National Historic Landmark. I’ll lead classroom sessions on night photography and light painting, and we’ll put that to use during our exclusive evening evening time at the site . I first ran this in 2024, with local photographer Meg McKinney, and here’s a story and photos from that workshop. You can find all the details for the 2025 trip here . Contact me if you have questions, or want to reserve a spot.
Ireland, May 13-21, 2025 – I led a trip to Ireland in 2014 with a very similar itinerary, and have been itching to go back ever since. We’ll start in Dublin and work our way across this beautiful country, from east to west. Castles, cities and towns, beautiful landscapes and welcoming people. Another trip organized by my good friend Rene Bastien of Highlight Photo Tours, you can view a gallery of photos from that 2014 trip here, and find all the details for this 2015 trip here . Contact me if you have questions, or want to reserve a spot.
Future Workshops
Below are the trips I’m currently developing or scheduling. If you’re interested in any of these, email me and I’ll let you know as soon as they’re posted:
Namibia, April (details coming soon!)
Newfoundland, late June
Tanzania, late July
Sedona, August
and more to be announced later

The trip was a ’10’ in every way. Your guides were the best in every way. Had a lot of attention, everyone was very helpful along the way. Your arrangements were excellent and I will do othe trips with Strabo again.

Trip was a 10! I think the Sahara was the best. Loved sleeping in berber tents. The photography was gorgeous and many wonderful photo opportunities. Ron always knew where to be when for best photographs. I’ve known him since 1982 when I went to Ireland, and I always wanted to do his Morocco trip after seeing photos and notices on Facebook from him. His energy, enthusiasm and humor was contagious. I liked his photo talks every so often as he wanted us all to see different things and find our own vision. He showed us examples of his work and other photographers that influenced him. Always informative of our daily activities and culture of Morocco. I loved the variety of hotels and lodges.
— A Converse
What a wonderful Ireland trip we had. Thanks for everything you did to make it possible and so enjoyable. Given how much fun we had and how delighted we were with the trip, we have just one suggestion to add more leisure time in villages. It and all the guides were 10 out of 10. Everyone was a wonderful help. The relationships we forged, particularly with Karen & Joel was the highlight.
— C Potyen
It is tough to pick just one highlight of the tour. Each segment of the trip was fantastic. Florence – early morning photography, walking tours of the city, and the excellent food Tuscany – amazing landscapes, towns and wine tasting Venice – it exceeded everything I had heard
Ron is a 10 plus!!! Your local guide and hotels all 10’s. Loved the trip and now have some great photo memories to view and share with family. We are thinking about Scotland for next year.

Are You Still Trying to Decide on a Palouse Country Photo Tour?
Custom, Private, & Night Photo Tours & Workshops In The Palouse
With the growing number of groups offering photo tours or workshops to the Palouse, ask yourself, "What do you want out of a Palouse photo tour?" and carefully consider the following before making your selection:
- How well does the tour leader know the area?
- Where is the tour leader from? (I bet not the Palouse).
- How many days does the tour leader personally photograph the Palouse each year?
- Does the tour leader scout the Palouse before each scheduled tour?
- How many photo tours have the leader conducted on the Palouse?
- Where does the tour leader take you?
- What is the group size of the photo tour (more than 8)?
- How many hours does the tour group spend in the field photographing the Palouse?
- Does the photo tour leader break away from the group to capture their own images?
- Carefully review feedback to see how former clients describe their experience.
The advantage of a Palouse Country Photo Tours/Workshops
Palouse Country Photo Tours will take you to photo sites that the other guys miss. Most other Palouse photo tours are designed and led by people who have never lived in the region and/or are not knowledgeable of the area. Their tours only stop at the most common sites and don't get into the heart of the Palouse country, where often the most exceptional photographic opportunities await.
Palouse Country Palouse Photo Tour leader Jack Lien has lived on and photographed the Palouse for over 40 years. He's discovered countless photographic opportunities throughout the region and has gained access to private land, nostalgic buildings, and landscape that is either unknown or off limits to others. Jack will get you into the heart and soul of the land and its people, and you'll have abundant opportunities to photograph historic buildings, barns, windmills, vintage trucks, and landscapes. You may also have the opportunity to meet and photograph area farmers preparing their equipment for a long day in the field.
Wheatland Farm: Palouse Country Photo Tours/Workshops is based out of our Wheatland Farm located 6 miles east of Colfax in the heart of the Palouse. Wheatland farm provides an ideal setting to conduct field instruction. Situated in our field are several iconic photo subjects/props that include a windmill, barn, two antique tractors (1927 and 1941), two original freight wagons (100+ years old), 1942 International wheat truck, 1936 Ford truck, 1949 Chevy truck, and numerous farm implements. These items are strategically placed to capture stunning images at sunrise, sunset, and the Milky Way overhead after dark.
We do our homework
The quality of every Palouse Country Photo Tour is important to us, so, before each photo tour, we map out and drive hundreds of miles, checking the routes of our tour to ensure maximum photographic opportunity for our participants.
We'll also check in with a number of local farmers to see who is working their land, check on the maturity of the crops, find where crop dusters are flying, locate areas with wildlife, and identify alternative photo opportunities and locations in the case of inclement weather.
June 7-11, Spring/Summer Palouse Photo Workshop Limit 8 - $1,200
June 12-16, Spring/Summer Palouse Photo Workshop Limit 8 - $1,200
"Don't just photograph the Palouse - EXPERIENCE it!"
"This past summer, I had the opportunity to go on a Palouse Country Photo Tour led by Jack Lien and was overwhelmed by his experience and enthusiasm for the Palouse. A longtime resident of the area, Jack's local knowledge, and accomplished photography skills made for a well-run and fun tour. I was with six other photography friends, and we each had varying interests, which Jack accommodated with ease. Knowing the back roads like the back of his own hand, Jack was able to consistently get us into beautiful and unique sectors of the Palouse as we chased the light throughout each day. The result was a photographic portfolio rich in results. The highlight was to be with Jack as we photographed the harvest - to our amazement, we were not only invited onto the fields but also into the combines of his network of farmers.
To those considering a Palouse Photo Tour in the future, I would say: "Don't just photograph the Palouse - EXPERIENCE it!" Go with Jack Lien's Palouse Country Photo Tours, and you won't be disappointed."

Difference between a photo tour & workshops.
There is a typical question to understand what are the differences between both types. All our trips are focus to teach all participants , but as you can see in our list of trips, you can find different kinds of trips.
For us, teach & travel is essential on all trips. But we differentiate the tour according to the conditions we can find. Basically, a Photo Workshop is more focused to teach you than showing you a place , so the itinerary can change according to great opportunities that can appear through the trip. A Photo Tour is focused to follow the itinerary and visit all places always that weather doesn’t make us change plans.

Two Aces and a 58 Highlight Second Round of the Dow Championship
Porter and young find themselves in contention for second epson tour win in 2024.
- Dow Championship
- Tournament News
While the Fourth of July is still a week away in the United States, there were plenty of fireworks in the second round of the Dow Championship. Five teams sky-rocketed to the top of the leaderboard after the second round of play and the first round of four-ball action. Teams Sloth Machine (Jaravee Boonchant and Chanettee Wannasaen) and Ping-Pals (Jennifer Kupcho and Ally Ewing) once again find themselves atop the leaderboard but are now joined by Team 2K (Auston Kim and Grace Kim), Team Hot Pot (Ssu-Chia Cheng and Wei-Ling Hsu and Team Hygge (Nanna Koerstz Madsen and Nicole Broch Estrup) at 12-under.
Switching formats to four-ball, Team 2K took advantage of the low-scoring opportunities that Midland Country Club presents, going six strokes lower than their 3-under 67 foursomes score to jump into a tie for first. The highlight of the round for the pair came when Aussie Grace Kim carded her first career ace on No. 7 from 145 yards with her 7-iron. The two added eight additional birdies and made just one bogey, propelling them from T9 to T1.
“I can't remember the yardage, but I hit a three-quarter 7-iron,” Kim said about her ace. “Wind was off the left, so I was like, 8 is not going to get there. I was just trying to put it close. All I see is it disappear. I've had a lot of close shaves, and this is actually my first one. So very exciting. Everyone was really happy for me, so it was very nice to share that moment.”
Team Hot Pot finished yesterday’s foursomes round in a tie for fourth but left no doubt they belong at the top of the leaderboard after recording a bogey-free four-ball round with an eagle and five birdies. Cheng and Hsu, who hail from Chinese Taipei, have made just one bogey in two rounds and are poised to keep their momentum rolling into the weekend at the Dow Championship.
Team Hygge turned in the second-lowest round of the day with a 10-under, 60 performance. The Danish duo recorded nine birdies and an eagle on the par-5 3rd hole, making just one bogey on No. 7. The two jumped from T16 to T1 ahead of the weekend in Midland, Mich. Both players are having some firsts at the Dow Championship, as Koerstz Madsen is making her first career start in the event and Broch Estrup is making her first start of the 2024 LPGA Tour season.
Teams Sloth Machine and Team Ping-Pals are once again tied at the top, as well. The two Thailand natives, Boonchant and Wannasaen, went bogey-free with six birdies, two pairs of which were back-to-back on holes 11 and 12, as well as 15 and 16. The Americans Ewing and Kupcho also went bogey-free with six birdies as well. Every winner of the Dow Championship has either been American or Thai.
Along with Kim’s ace, Japan’s Hinako Shibuno recorded her second career hole-in-one on the par-3 18th hole from 143 yards out with her 8-iron. It is her first hole-in-one since the second round of the 2022 BMW Ladies Championship. Team BS (Celine Boutier and Yuka Saso) also made headlines after tying the 18-hole four-ball tournament scoring record, turning in a 58. It ties the record set by Jin Young Ko and Minjee Lee in 2019 and is the seventh round in the 50s since the tournament began.
“I think we both had opportunities, birdie chances on each hole, and so we knew we could both be aggressive with our putts because we knew the other one also had a chance,” Boutier said about what was clicking. “In that way, we really helped each other out, and she also helped me a lot on the reads, so I definitely felt more confident with the lines and stuff like that, so that helps, also.”

15 Things to Do in Santa Clara (CA)
Santa Clara is a city of nearly 125,000 residents that’s located in Santa Clara County, about 75 kilometers south of San Francisco .
The city was founded more than 200 years ago as a Spanish Mission. Now, it’s most well-known for its booming tech industry that’s commonly referred to around the world as Silicon Valley.
Though it’s common knowledge to most football fans, it’s a surprise to many to discover that the relatively small city is also the home of the National Football League’s San Francisco 49ers.
Visitors to Santa Clara have abundant activity options at their fingertips without venturing outside city limits, so staying engaged and entertained shouldn’t be an issue.
1. Levi’s Stadium
With a capacity of nearly 70,000, Levi’s Stadium on Marie P. DeBartolo Way in Santa Clara is one of the country’s premier professional football stadiums.
The 49ers play their home games here, and during the off-season, the stadium hosts a variety of annual events, including concerts featuring big names in the music industry.
Taking a family to a football game isn’t the least expensive activity option in the area, but for those who’ve never taken in a pro game, it’s an exhilarating experience that may be worth the cost.
Guided tours are also regularly available, and the bars and restaurants around the stadium are fun to visit year-round.
2. Ulistac Natural Area
Despite its large population and the overall hustle and bustle, the Bay Area features plenty of urban parks and natural areas that are convenient options for those interested in enjoying the great outdoors.
The Ulistac Natural Area is located on Lick Mill Road in Santa Clara. It is comprised of more than 40 acres that include a variety of distinct environments.
The natural area straddles the Guadalupe River and is home to an array of plants and animals that are well-suited to its riparian habitat.
A particularly popular attraction for bird watchers, it features a number of well-marked nature trails dotted with interpretive signs.
3. Santa Clara Art & Wine Festival
Californians take their art and wine seriously, and there’s no better way to combine the two than by visiting the Santa Clara Art & Wine Festival.
The event is held in the city’s Central Park and features nearly 200 vendors from across the country selling fine art and crafts, gourmet food, and a vast selection of California’s best wines.
Proceeds are donated to worthwhile causes that benefit residents in need. It all takes place in the early fall when the central California weather is perfect for outdoor activities.
Other highlights include live entertainment and lots of art-related activities for kids.
4. The de Saisset Museum
Though he’s not exactly a household name for those who don’t typically travel in West Coast art circles, Ernest de Saisset was one of the Bay Area’s most prominent artists in the 19th century.
Saisset was a French immigrant who enrolled in Santa Clara University and studied painting as a young man.
The museum that now bears his name is located on the university’s campus. It includes a collection of more than 100 of his most impressive works.
It’s as much a historical attraction as it is an art one, and it also has other works from European and American artists dating back hundreds of years.
5. Intel Museum
Intel is one of the titans of the tech world. Over the years, it has been responsible for some of the most significant technological leaps forward in computer hardware.
The Intel Museum is located on the campus of the company’s world headquarters in Santa Clara, and it’s regularly open to the public.
Even for those who don’t fall into the tech-savvy category, it’s a fascinating place that’s definitely worth an hour or two of time.
Though it may sound dry to technophobes, it’s packed with interactive exhibits for visitors of all ages, so it’s great for kids with short attention spans too.
6. Santa Clara Farmers’ Market
There’s really no better way to rub elbows with locals, enjoy pleasant weather, and have access to tons of great products you won’t find elsewhere than by visiting a farmers’ market.
The Santa Clara Farmers’ Market is open year-round and features a little bit of everything – from seasonal produce and fresh baked goods to health and body products and prepared food items.
Held on Jackson Street near the downtown area, it’s common to find different items each time you go.
Spending a few bucks is a great way to support local farmers and entrepreneurs, and don’t be shy about asking them for suggestions for things to see and do while in town.
7. California’s Great America
There’s no shortage of theme parks in the Golden State, but there’s one clear choice for those visiting Santa Clara.
California’s Great America is located on Great America Parkway just outside of town. It features tons of rides, dining options, kid’s activities, and a water park that’s a huge draw during the hot summer months.
Though Great America can really draw a crowd during peak times when kids are enjoying their summer vacations, previous guests have noted that wait times for rides weren’t overly long.
Many families choose to spend an entire day on-site to avoid wasting valuable recreational time in the car.
8. Mission Santa Clara
Mission Santa Clara is one of the city’s premier historic sites, and it’s now conveniently located on the campus of Santa Clara University.
The mission was established by Franciscans in the 1770s to spread Christianity to the area’s Native American population.
Sadly, things didn’t go according to plan; due to several natural disasters, the mission was forced to move from its original site to where it is now.
Over the years, it was also run by the Jesuits. Though it’s no longer functioning in its original role, it now doubles as a museum and chapel that are open to visitors.
9. The Triton Museum of Art
Though guests tend to visit the Triton Museum of Art for the works in its collection, its stunning contemporary architecture usually makes a big impression as well.
The museum’s collection includes works from all over the country, but its emphasis is on pieces created by Bay Area artists using local people and scenery as inspiration.
The grounds also include a sprawling outdoor sculpture garden spread over nearly seven acres, and a home from the mid-1860s that’s among the most well-preserved examples of historic American architecture in the area.
The museum is located on Warburton Avenue, and most visitors spend a few hours on-site.
10. Santa Clara Players
The Santa Clara Players traces its roots all the way back to the early ‘60s, when a group of local performers began putting on small shows for the community.
Now nearly seven decades later, they’re still going strong. Their annual performances run the gamut from dramatic theater and mystery to satire and humor.
The players are part of a community theater group staffed by talented volunteers dedicated to providing high-quality, family-friendly entertainment at a reasonable cost.
They’re located on Don Avenue in Santa Clara and offer lots of volunteer opportunities for budding actors and stagehands.
11. Central Park
Featuring lots of wide-open spaces and massive swimming and community rec centers, Santa Clara’s Central Park is a go-to destination for activity minded visitors looking to make the most of their limited vacation time without traveling to more distant attractions.
The park is centrally located on Keily Boulevard, has ample parking, and features lots of outdoor amenities and recreational activity options.
From tennis and basketball to softball, lawn bowling, and a big playground, there’s really no excuse for getting bored while on-site. For those looking to spend a relaxing afternoon, there are a lake, built-in BBQs, and public restrooms.
12. The 49ers Museum
Even for those who won’t be in Santa Clara during the regular season, the 49ers stadium and museum are fun attractions worth visiting for sports-minded visitors.
The museum is located inside Levi’s Stadium and features nearly a dozen distinct galleries that are open to the public year-round.
It’s a fun and educational experience for visitors of all ages. In addition to football, its exhibits touch on science, technology, and art in a way that engages and entertains young and old minds alike.
Most guests check out the introductory video in the visitor’s center before showing themselves through the impressive collection of trophies, balls, and Super Bowl memorabilia on display.
13. The Santa Clara Fire Museum
The Santa Clara Fire Department’s roots run all the way back to the 1850s when it was founded.
The museum is now located on Walsh Avenue in an unused training center behind the city’s new fire station.
It sports an impressive collection of equipment and historical memorabilia that give visitors unique insights into the lives of fire and rescue personnel in years past.
The museum’s highlights include a fully restored Model-T fire truck that served for two decades, beginning in the 1920s.
The knowledgeable local volunteer staff also offer regular programs geared at educating the public about fire safety and prevention issues.
14. Edward Peterman Museum of Railroad History
The Edward Peterman Museum of Railroad History is run by a local historical society. It is housed in the depot of a now-defunct railroad on Railroad Avenue in Santa Clara.
Like many local historical attractions, the museum is staffed by local volunteers who love answering questions and showing first-time visitors around.
The museum’s exhibits include a variety of railroad equipment and memorabilia, including signals, safety equipment, and historical photographs dating back over 100 years.
The museum is regularly open to the public. It maintains an extensive library of books relating to railroad development and local history as well.
15. Voyager Coffee
Though it has only been around since 2016, Voyager Coffee’s owner and staff are dedicated to the noble pursuit of making their customers happy.
They do this largely by providing world-class coffee, but also by offering a comfortable space in which guests have opportunities to build relationships with like-minded customers.
Many of their coffees sport internationally influenced flavors, and they’re often infused with things like orange essence and cherry blossom water.
Don’t worry if you prefer your coffee straight-up, because they’ve got more traditional brews as well.
They offer fresh pastry and baked goods, tea, and other non-coffee drinks too.

I took the tour again recently, because I had been told that it had improved since my last visit.
The result? Yes, it is improved.
They addressed all of my earlier complaints about the tour guides:
- I had complained that it was sometimes hard to hear them speak, so they now pass out individual headphones that allow guests to easily hear the guide under all conditions.
- I had noted that it was strictly a walking tour, and that all that walking could be a bit tiring for some members of the group. So now they shuttle guests around in golf carts that hold about six people each - making for small, intimate tour groups, and making it easy for the less hardy to easily traverse the lot.
- I had also complained that the tour guides' training seemed lacking, when it came to knowing the history of the studio. But if the guide on my latest tour was typical, they have solved that problem as well. Our guide, Travis, seemed well-versed on both the history and current activities of the studio, as well as being personable & professional. He couldn't have done a much better job, given the natural limitations of the tour. They have also outfitted the guides with iPads, which allow them to show guests photos and short videos illustrating the subjects under discussion.
And unless I'm imagining it, the studio lot itself (or at least its southern edge, around the Paseo) seems to look better, more gentrified, than on my previous trips - almost resembling a college campus in spots.
All in all, those are some nice improvements, and make for a much better tour than what I experienced in my earlier visits to the studio.
However, what they couldn't fix are the problems inherent to the Paramount lot itself.
Don't get me wrong, Paramount Studios is one of the most historic studio lots in town (and in fact, the only major studio still officially inside the Hollywood borders). They made the very first movie to win an Academy Award ("Wings"), and on this lot they have shot such classics as "The Godfather", "Forrest Gump", "Titanic", "Raiders of the Lost Ark", "Going My Way", "Sunset Blvd", "Breakfast at Tiffany's", "King Kong", "Braveheart", "Grease" and the "Star Trek" series, to name just a few.
But what it lacks is a traditional big back lot, full of permanent standing outdoor sets. This was a staple of the major studios back in the Golden Age, filled with faux residential neighborhoods, jungles, mock railroads, Western towns, and Paris streets. These big back lots were always the most colorful and interesting aspects of any movie studio, at least from the standpoint of a visitor. MGM had a huge back lot, before they tore it down in the '70s. Warner Bros. still has theirs. As does Universal, of course.
To the average tour guest, all sound stages look more or less the same: distinguished only by the large numbers painted on their sides. When they're in use, they are usually off-limits to tours. When they are not in use, they are usually empty or filled with folded flats and lighting equipment. So the guides are mostly limited to driving past these faceless barns, and telling us the history of each one, with tour guests catching an occasional glimpse of their dark, mostly empty interiors through the occasional open door.
( I noticed that they have added plaques to the outside of each sound stage, listing the notable movies & TV shows made inside. That's great, except that the tour tram usually doesn't get close enough, or stop long enough for guests to read them. )
I realize that they can't, in practical terms, let the guests watch while movies are being made. But they could (and should) show us more of the behind-the-scenes process. Guests need to see things like the costume department, the prop houses, the recording studios, the dressing rooms, the mini-factories where they build the sets - and it sure wouldn't hurt to show guests at least one movie camera somewhere along the tour.
In short, they keep guests on the outside far too often, looking at exterior walls passing by, and listening to the guide's spiel. Granted, the general buzz of the studio (its streets cluttered with white production trailers, and buzzing with the bikes and golf carts used to get around the lot) can be interesting in its own right, but a little of that goes a long way.
During my most recent tour, we only went inside twice: once to step into a tiny, empty, corner space in the New York set (that was once used for filming a scene from "Breakfast at Tiffany's"), and a second time to visit the empty set of "The Doctors" (a daytime TV talk show that I honestly never heard of).
Still, the tour is indeed better than it used to be, and I have to give them high marks for making an effort. And it remains superior to the Sony studio tour , which is just downright boring. However, it still doesn't measure up to the Warner Bros. tour , with its huge back lot and more comprehensive tour.
But there are legitimate reasons why someone might opt for the Paramount tour.
As the photo on the left shows, Paramount is the only major studio where you have a view of the Hollywood Sign from inside the lot. OK, let's get into the details of what you'll see:
The Paramount tour takes a full two hours, and barely scratches the surface of the numerous buildings and sound stages that make up the 65-acre studio.
When he does, your first stop will be the Paramount gift shop, where they will give you some time to wander around the small store (where they no doubt hope you will spend your money on one of their t-shirts or coffee mugs, all bearing the familiar Paramount mountain logo). You can also get a cup of coffee here, and relax for a moment under an umbrella at a patio table just outside.
They will then head east along the south edge of the studio lot, along the Paseo, the tiled walkway that runs parallel to Melrose, inside the studio. On the right (south) edge of this broad walkway is a small strip of lawn, called Marathon Park, that is often also used for filming (due to its convenient location and relatively low cost), and the guide will tell you about a few of those productions.
Then it is on to the iconic Bronson gate (the one featured in "Sunset Blvd", "The Artist", and many other films), where you'll be given the chance to pose for photos near that famous arch. (It is indeed a very photogenic spot.)
This brief history lecture (visually aided by the guide's iPad) seems to replace the short film about Paramount that used to be shown to tour guests before the start of the tour. That's a mixed blessing, since its hard for a single person, no matter how talented, to compete with a professionally-made documentary film featuring the highlights of the studio's 100-year history.
Back outside on the Paseo, you'll be shown the original bench from "Forrest Gump", and regaled with stories about how Tom Hanks showed up one day to sit on the bench and pass out chocolates to passersby.
Then it's back on the tram, and through the Bronson gate into the actual working studio.
From here on in, the tours are somewhat played by ear.
As an example, on my visit, the guide ran into an unexpected problem. While taking us to see the New York set (usually the highlight of the tour), he found his way blocked by a giant white tent, erected for some special event (you can rent the New York set for just such events, if you have the $10,000 a day it costs). As a result, we ended up having to take a roundabout route and ended up seeing only a small section of the large New York set (portions of which mimic several East Coast cities).
We got out and were allowed to step inside the empty shell of a small storefront that our guide told us was used as the interior for Alex's boutique, called "Xela" on the TV sitcom "Happy Endings". Since I never watched the show, that didn't mean much to me.
We were shown clips (via the guide's iPad) of a scene shot there from "Breakfast at Tiffany's".
We were also shown a very small alleyway just outside with fake bricks, and with fake sewers that could be rigged to emit steam, to add to that east coast ambiance.
Along the way, there was a lot of talk of the current TV shows filming on the lot: "NCIS", "Glee" "Happy Endings" and "Rizzoli & Isles". There are also a lot of Nickelodeon kid shows filming at the studio, with names like "Big Time Rush" and "Marvin Marvin", which didn't ring a bell with most of the adults on this tour.
Tourists always hope to see a celebrity on a tour like this, but that is always a longshot chance.
We also saw a number of little kids spill out of a bus, and were told they were the cast of an upcoming Nickelodeon show called "Haunted Hathaways". But since the show hasn't aired yet, that didn't mean much.
Likewise, our guide later pointed out a tween girl in a colorful dress, and identified her as Ryan Newman, an up-&-coming star (according to our guide) appearing with Tony Danza on his latest sitcom, "See Dad Run".
But, as expected, the better-known stars of "NCIS", "Glee" or even "Happy Endings" were nowhere in sight.
Finally, we headed to the southwest corner of the Paramount lot, which used to be RKO Studios, and later DesiLu (before Paramount absorbed it).
Our guide showed us Lucy Park (and an adjacent childcare center built by Lucille Ball for her employees).
We took a look at (the exterior) of Stage 21, where RKO filmed the original "King Kong", and then it was back to the studio cafe (seen on "Glee" as "Breadsticks"), where we disembarked and dispersed (after more encouragement to spend money in the studio gift shop).
The bottom line? The studio tour is better than it used to be, and well worth the time, when you're in Hollywood. But it could still be better. And the historic Paramount lot, while it has a lot to offer, isn't the ideal movie studio for a tour.

About Untitled by Paula Guardián
On the island of Broad Channel, New York, all stories begin with the water. Boats are parked on the streets like cars, calendars outline the moon’s cycle to track the tides, and kids often travel to school by kayak. In this ongoing documentary project—taking place in a town just twenty blocks long and four blocks wide—I trace the global and local impact of climate change in this deeply rooted seaside community.
About A Deriva (Adrift) by Rita Correia
A Deriva explores the hybrid identity of Brazilian women who have migrated to the United States. These women leave behind their culture, with its traditions, language, and codes, facing profound transformations in a new country. The project explores displacement, belonging, and self-creation, portraying various facets of these womens ' journeys through the social aspects of immigration. This work shows where women come to pursue their dreams and their encounters with loneliness while finding a sense of home.

Forget Prince William's dancing — Jason Kelce says Princess Charlotte was the highlight of Taylor Swift's Eras Tour
- Jason and Travis Kelce discussed their recent attendance at the Eras Tour on their podcast.
- They revealed that they both met the royal family at Friday's show in London.
- Jason said Princess Charlotte was "the highlight" of the interaction.
Jason Kelce has a new favorite royal: Princess Charlotte.
Over the weekend, Taylor Swift continued her European leg of the Eras Tour with three shows at Wembley Stadium in London. The London Authority estimated that Swift's shows boosted the city's economy by about $379 million.
The weekend was filled with fun moments, including Swift bringing her boyfriend, Travis Kelce, who attended all three shows in London, onstage for a surprise appearance on Sunday.
The Friday and Saturday shows also marked Travis' brother and sister-in-law Jason and Kylie Kelce's first stops on Swift's Eras Tour.
The couple were just two of several celebrities who attended the London shows. At one of the performances, they met three of the most famous people to ever come to a Swift show: Prince William, Prince George, and Princess Charlotte.
Prince William brought his kids to the Eras Tour
William attended the concert on Friday with George, 10, and Charlotte, 9. Kate Middleton and Prince Louis, 6, did not join them.
In addition to watching the show from a private suite, the trio visited Swift and Travis backstage before she performed.
The Prince of Wales and Swift posted about their meetup on Instagram.
Swift's interactions with the Waleses bolstered positive attention for the royals, as did a video of Prince William dancing gleefully to "Shake It Off" during the concert.

The Kelce brothers shared new details of the meeting on Wednesday's episode of their podcast "New Heights," during which they revealed Jason and Kylie also met the royals.
Travis and Jason said they were impressed by the family.

"They were an absolute delight to meet," Travis said on the podcast of the royals. "I wasn't sure if I was supposed to like bow to them, curtsy, just be an American idiot and shake their hands."
"They said because we weren't at like an official royal event, we didn't need to bow or curtsy," Jason said. "I did still address them as Your Royal Highness."
"I've never seen you give someone that much respect," Travis told Jason. "You put your beer like 10 feet away from them."
"They were wonderful people," Jason said, adding that they seemed "down to earth."
The brothers also said they were fans of William, with Jason saying he is "a good dude."
"He was the coolest motherfucker," Travis said of the heir to the British throne. "He was so cool."
Princess Charlotte left an impression
Jason said that meeting Princess Charlotte, who was grinning from ear to ear in her photos with Swift, was "the highlight" of his interaction with the royals.
"I gotta say, Prince William was fantastic, but the highlight was Princess Charlotte," Jason said. "Prince George was great, too."
"She was so fucking adorable," Jason went on to say of Charlotte. "Maybe it's because I have three girls now."

Jason and Kylie have three daughters: Wyatt, 4, Elliotte, 3, and Bennett, 1.
"She was a superstar," Travis agreed of Charlotte.
"She had fire to her," Jason added of the princess. "She was asking questions. That was the most electric part."
Charlotte also stood out at Trooping the Colour on June 15, where she was spotted looking like the spitting image of her father .
