Grimsey in Summer

Grimsey in winter, movies filmed in grimsey, interesting places near grimsey island.

Grimsey is a remote island  north of Iceland . It’s home to fewer than 100 people but over one million seabirds, including famous puffins and dive-bombing Arctic terns. Travelers flock here to cross the Arctic Circle and get their certificate for having just been there. Just 40 km (25 mi) off Iceland’s north coast, Grimsey is a day-trip destination you’ll remember for a lifetime.

Grimsey is the northernmost inhabited point of Iceland and  the only part of the country that lies within the Arctic Circle . This small Icelandic island is only 3 miles (5 km) long and 5 sq km (2 sq mi) in total area. You can easily explore the entire island in one day.

Grimsey island Lighthouse and Puffins in Iceland

The Arctic island is inhabited by hardy Icelanders, mostly fishermen and their families. They all live in the tiny harbor village of Sandvík, the island’s only settlement.

Grimsey’s two biggest attractions are birdwatching and crossing the Arctic Circle. Then, of course, there are the exquisite sunsets and incredible Northern Lights shows.

Even though Grimsey might not be the biggest island around, it offers all necessary services for the modern community. This includes a school, a swimming pool, a supermarket, a harbor, internet, and even an airport.

As one of the world’s northernmost locations, the Arctic Circle is certainly not an ordinary travel destination. Below find everything you need to know about Iceland, Grimsey, and the Arctic Circle.

The Arctic Circle is the imaginary line that circles around the top of the planet. This line marks the latitude north of which there is at least one full day of darkness and one full day of light a year.

Technically speaking, the Arctic Circle wraps around the globe at 66°33′ N degrees north of the Equator (the imaginary line that goes around the middle of the Earth).

Everything north of the Arctic Circle is known as the Arctic , the northernmost region of the Earth. The Arctic Circle crosses eight countries: Finland, Sweden, Norway, Russia, the U.S., Canada, Greenland, and Iceland (where it passes through the island of Grimsey).

Yes, Iceland is in the Arctic Circle, but only a small part of the country is crossed at the 66°N latitude. This small part is the island of Grimsey.  The mainland is located a few degrees south of the Arctic Circle. That said, all of Iceland’s Arctic Circle tours take place in Grimsey, Iceland’s only real piece of Arctic territory.

However, the Arctic Circle is on the move. Due to long-term oscillations in the Earth’s axis, the Arctic Circle moves about 15 m (48 ft) northwards every year.

This means that the Arctic Circle will pass Grimsey by around 2050. There is a 9-ton concrete sphere that marks Arctic Circle’s changing position, according to  Smithsonian Magazine .

Touch the Arctic Circle in Grimsey now before it’s too late! You can do so on our  Grimsey Arctic Circle Tour .

Alternatively, you can catch a flight with Air Iceland from Akureyri. This flight takes off three times a week in winter and every day in summer.

What to Do at Grimsey?

  • Go puffin watching . From May to September the island is an excellent bird watching location, especially for those interested in seeing puffins in their natural habitat.

Recently, a  Grimsey Puffin astonished scientists  by using a tool to scratch an itch in a viral video.

Rare footage shows a puffin in the wild using a stick to scratch itself

  • Take an exclusive  Grimsey Arctic Circle Tour   and create unforgettable memories  —  all in one day! You’ll have plenty of opportunities to see puffins and other seabirds up close, enjoy romantic landscapes, and chat with locals throughout your trip.
  • Make a stop at the Arctic Circle Monument , a 9-ton stone sphere which was put up in 2017. This piece of art marks the boundary of the Arctic Circle in Grimsey.

Other exciting things to do on Grimsey Island include:

  • Visit a small wooden church  rich in history and cuteness that dates back to 1867.
  • Walk along the dazzling and sharp ocean cliffs . The view, feeling, and grandness of it all is something you will keep with you forever.
  • Take a dip in a swimming pool  open after dinner Monday-Wednesday and on Saturdays between 2 p.m. and 4 p.m.
  • Witness the Northern Lights dance above the Arctic Circle . If you’re visiting Grimsey Island in winter, make sure to check the aurora forecast. When the lights come out they will shine even brighter and dance even more playfully at Grimsey!

Where to Stay at Grimsey?

There are two guesthouses found on the island of Grímsey:

  • Guesthouse Gullsól
  • Guesthouse Básar

Alternatively, you have the option of camping at Grimsey. The camping ground is situated by the public pool, which serves as the shower and WC for the camping ground. The reception at the pool serves as an information center.

Swimming pool opening hours:

  • Monday to Wednesday from 8 p.m. to 9:30 p.m.
  • On Saturdays from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m.

Where to Eat at Grimsey?

  • Búðin  – the local grocery store where you can pick up all the basics. A perfect stop if you are looking to have a picnic!
  • Krían   – only open in summer but can be opened for pre-booked groups in winter. The restaurant is named after the Arctic tern known as  kría  in Icelandic.

Grimsey Weather

Despite the remote northern location of Grimsey, the  climate here is surprisingly mild  because of the warm Gulf Stream waters. The maximum temperature recorded in Grimsey is even higher than in Iceland’s capital, Reykjavik, which is way farther south.

However, don’t forget that Iceland’s weather is highly unpredictable. You might experience all four seasons in just one day! Make sure to bring warm outdoor clothing and a waterproof jacket. Good clothing is key to fully exploring the island without having to worry about catching a cold.

In the summertime, Grimsey is known as  one of the absolute best places to experience the Midnight Sun   in Iceland. Daylight lasts up to 24 hours a day! This means only one thing: you’ll have all the time you need for sightseeing.

The summer is also an excellent time to go birdwatching. The island is home to a fabulous puffin colony, one of the largest in the country.

Grimsey can be easily visited in winter by ferry or plane. The biggest draw during the season is  the Northern Lights . The views of the great aurora are simply fantastic since the island is far away from city lights. The  otherworldly pink sunsets  are a great bonus too.

Please note that the puffins in Grimsey can only be seen from May to September. So if you want to see them whilst on the island, you should come back during the summer.

Watching the cute puffins nesting in 100 meters high cliffs is a unique experience, not only for birdwatchers. The puffins are not shy nor scared of humans and Grímsey island is one of the best bird-watching sites in Iceland.

Grímsey island is one of the last remaining true Icelandic fishing villages and before heading back to Akureyri, you can taste a sample of traditional Icelandic cuisine served by local villagers. Grímsey Island

Life at Grimsey Island

Fishing is a major source of commerce on this picturesque island. The Grimsey fishermen farm the rich fishing banks all over the island. You can also see them using their small motorboats to venture further north in the Arctic Ocean. The renovated harbor and fertile fishing grounds adorn the island. When you visit Grimsey, you can witness the courageous stints of the fishermen as the boundless Arctic Ocean often turns wild. Sea storms and frost are a common thing with waves that can reach 15 meters high.

Along with the economy, the advent of tourism has also seen a rise in Grimsey. The island is well-equipped with modern facilities for tourists. There are several guesthouses and cafes where you can relax and enjoy the local food. Two guesthouses are there on the island, one of which is open throughout the year. For better connectivity, there is an airport that connects to Akureyri airport. A school and community center, along with a swimming pool, contribute to the development of the area. Privately owned village convenience store, Búðin sells a variety of goods and essentials.

What to see in Grimsey

The lush green island is blessed with enriched birdlife. Grimsey hosts various species of birds and that too in a large number. You will be surprised to know that at Grimsey, seabirds outnumber locals by around 10,000 to one. This is due to various reasons such as they have plenty of fishes to eat from the Arctic seas. The second reason could be the restrictions on hunting of the birds and the collection of eggs, during the previous half-century. Do carry your camera to capture beautiful scenes and mesmerizing birds.

The main attraction is the Atlantic Puffins that reside on the island. Most of the visitors come to Grimsey in the summer to see the Puffins. You will find no puffins here during winters. Black-Legged Kittiwakes, Auks, Thick-Billed Murre, Razorbills, and Northern Fulmar are included in the wide range of other species found on the island. If you are a birdwatcher, you should visit between May and September to see these colorful flying creatures capturing the skies.

Grímsey Island

The History of Grímsey

You can visit the small wooden church, of great historical importance, built on the island. The Catholic bishop of Iceland, Jón Ögmundsson, built an older church almost 900 years ago. Though it falls within the parish of Akureyri, this is a new church constructed in 1867. The church was renovated in 1932 and it shows a native, century-old imitation of a painting by Leonardo Da Vinci. Another interesting fact about the island is that it first appeared in writing around the year 1000 CE. This alone speaks volumes about the historical significance of this small island. Grímsey also features a popular monument- an eight-tonne sphere of stone, it marks the edge of the Arctic Circle. The thought behind the shape is to represent the rolling movements of the Arctic Circle. This is an out-of-the-box idea to witness as the monument is not fixed and moves along with its true location.

How to get to Grimsey Island

You can easily reach Grimsey Island through the ferry services that are functional three days a week, throughout the year. Regular flights run from Akureyri , thrice a week during winter and all through the week during summer.

Situated just off shore from Drangsnes in Steingrímsfjörður, the island of Grímsey is a true gem of nature. From Drangsnes there are scheduled boat trips to the island, which take around 10 minutes. In Grímsey there is abundant birdlife and beautiful nature.  We recommend at least 2 hours stay on the island to explore the island and it's birds. For more information about the boat trips, contact Malarhorn cafe.

If you are looking for something unique to do in Iceland that is not touristy and so rewarding, look no further.

A day trip to Grímsey Island gives you a unique chance to cross the Arctic Circle, experience stunning natural landscapes, witness abundant birdlife, and explore a remote Icelandic island with a small, welcoming community.

This day trip was a highlight of my 10 days in Iceland and I would absolutely go again. In this post, I’ll share how I planned my summer day trip to Grímsey Island and give you additional information for planning a longer stay.

A Brief Overview of Grímsey Island

Grímsey Island is a small island situated about 40 kilometers (25 miles) off the north coast of Iceland in the Arctic Ocean. It straddles the Arctic Circle, making it the only part of Iceland located north of this imaginary line. The island is only 3 miles long and 2 sq mi in total area.

The island’s close-knit community lives in Sandvík, the island’s only settlement.

There are about 60 inhabitants on the island, but many of them do not live on Grímsey year round. Our island greeter told us only about 8 would live through the harsh arctic winters on the island while the others retreat to the mainland to wait out the bitter cold.

Despite its small size, the town has a school, market, thermal swimming pool, airport and small port. There are a few guesthouses and a campsite for tourists who want to stay overnight.

There are no buses, taxis, or public transportation on the island, but if you are lucky, you might be able to catch a ride on a local’s tractor.

Besides its small community, the island is known for its rich birdlife, particularly puffins. The cliffs and surroundings provide excellent nesting grounds for seabirds, making it a haven for birdwatchers. During the summer months, visitors can witness thousands of puffins, as well as other bird species such as guillemots and razorbills.

Due to its high latitude, Grímsey experiences the midnight sun, the natural phenomenon during summer when the sun remains visible for 24 hours near polar regions. In winter, the island experiences polar nights, with prolonged periods of darkness.

Planning a Day Trip to Grímsey Island

The island makes a great day trip from Akureyri in northern Iceland but it is possible to stay longer for those seeking a remote and pristine escape in a less touristy setting.

My day trip to the island was booked at the last minute, the day before we departed. I had never heard of Grímsey Island but wanted to see puffins up close and discovered Grimsey Island while in Akureyri searching for, “How to see Puffins in Iceland.”

The day trip to Grímsey was amazing! We only got to spend two hours on the island, but that is all you need to see the puffins, walk to the Arctic Circle, and enjoy some stunning scenery.

Puffins only come to shore in the summer to nest and give birth. They spend the winters in the open ocean, so in order to see the puffins of Grímsey Island, you have to visit during the summer (June-August).

There are other things to see on the island if you want to plan a longer stay, but reservations will need to be made well in advance as there are only two guest houses on the island.

There are tours offered to Grímsey Island, but you do not need to spend extra on a Grímsey Island Iceland Tour , you can book transportation yourself and walk around the island with no problems.

a

How to Get to Grímsey Island

You can reach the island by airplane or ferry. Both transportation methods operate year round, but departure times vary throughout the year. During summer, there are 5 trips a week via ferry and flights at least two days a week, with the opportunity to charter a plane outside the pre-scheduled flight times. Check the ferry and flight websites for updated departure times and days of travel.

Cost and time are the biggest differences between taking the ferry or flying. My group flew because we needed to get back to Akureyri for plans later in the evening, and two of my group members did not want to risk getting seasick on the ferry.

I love the aerial views you get from flying so low. We even saw whales swimming during take off, which was so cool. Despite the extra cost, flying was the right option for our group.

Flying From Akureyri (AEY) to Grimsey

Flights can be booked on Norlandair for a small prop plane that accommodates around 8 people. The total flight time is about 30 minutes.

I believe Norlandair and Icelandair merged, and the name was changed to Air Iceland, but there is no website for Air Iceland, and you can not book a flight from Akureyri to Grímsey on Icelandair.com. The trip went smoothly when booking on the Norlandair website .

The round-trip flight is about $150-$175 USD.

grimsey tour

Grimsey Island Ferry

The ferry is called Sæfari, and it maintains a year-round schedule between Dalvík and Grímsey. Dalvík is about a 40-minute drive from Akureyri.

The ferry takes about three hours to arrive in Grímsey.

During the summer months (June-August) the 108 person ferry stops at Grímsey Island for 2 to 4 hours before returning to Dalvik. This gives you 2-4 hours to see the island on a day trip.

The roundtrip ferry is about $60 USD per passenger. The ferry can also accommodate cars with advanced arrangements, but you won’t need a car on the island.

You can book a ferry ticket on the Iceland road website here .

What To Do on a Day Trip to Grímsey Island

You will only have about 2 hours to walk around the island on a day trip to Grímsey, which does not sound like a lot, but it really was enough time to do what we came to do- watch the puffins!

After deplaning, a greeter welcomed us to the island and pointed out some landmarks like the lighthouse, the church, and the Orbis et Globus (a sphere art piece that marks the location of the Arctic Circle).

Unfortunately, in September 2021, the beloved wooden church burnt to the ground, leaving only ashes; nothing could be saved. The community is now working to raise funds to rebuild the church that served as a powerful reminder of unity to the small community it served.

Everyone from the flight (all 8 of us) headed toward the sphere, stopping along the way to lie in the grass and watch the puffins on the cliffs. It is about a mile walk to the Orbis et Globus sphere, located on the island’s northern tip, from the runway.

If you asked me, the puffins are the stars of the show, but if you wanted to walk through the town of Sandvík, you could do that too. It’s about 15 mins from the airport, in the opposite direction of the Orbis et Globus.

The lighthouse is about 1.8 miles (3 km) or 40 mins walk from the airport, so you would be rushed if you wanted to walk there.

The plane departs promptly, so ensure you are back to the airstrip in time to board.

Before boarding the flight back, the captain gave us each a certificate commemorating our trip to the Arctic Circle. It was totally unexpected but a lovely way to remember our trip to Grímsey Island.

s

Staying the Night on Grímsey Island

If you are looking for a longer retreat to the island you can stay overnight in one of the hotels or consider camping. There are some activities to keep you busy during your stay (listed in the next section of this post) but the main attraction is the island’s natural beauty and unspoiled atmosphere.

The island has two guest houses and one campsite. Google Maps indicates a third hotel, but I could only find booking information for the two guest houses. Midgardar Hotel may not be accepting bookings at this time. They do not have a website, and their linked Air B&B page is no longer working.

Grímsey Island Hotels

  • You can book directly at Guesthouse Gullsól
  • You can book directly at Guesthouse Basar

Camping on Grímsey Island

An official campground on the island is centrally located in town next to the swimming pool. Campers can use the pool facilities including hot showers & toilets, but you will need to bring your own camping supplies.

Things To Do on Grímsey Island

With an overnight stay on Grímsey Island, you’ll be able to see more of its scenic beauty and important landmarks, including the island’s lighthouse, Century Stones, and the Fiske Monument. Here is everything you can see and do on Grimsely Island besides puffins and the Arctic Circle.

  • Festivals: Enjoy celebrating the longest day of the year and the movement of the Orbis et Globus at the Summer Solstice Festival around June 20th each year.
  • Basalt columns: Stunning basalt columns can be found mainly along the island’s southwest corner.
  • Century Stones: The three stones, at different locations on the island, are used to mark the Arctic Circle’s position during the summer solstices of 1717, 1817, and 1917.
  • Golf: A small 3 hole golf course is located near the airport, golf clubs and balls can be rented at the Básar Guesthouse.
  • Folf (frisbee golf): A 9-basket course can be found on Grímsey island.
  • Bike Riding : Grímsey fits well for mountain biking as the landscape is soft, with a mixture of tracks, paths and roads. The company Arctic Bikes rents out mountain bikes and helmets to ferry-goers.
  • The Fiske Monument: To honor Daniel Willard Fiske, an American librarian and scholar, who donated chess sets to every home after learning of the locals’ chess-loving lifestyle. He also contributed a substantial sum to support the community’s future endeavors.
  • Lighthouse : Built in 1937, the 9.6-meter-high lighthouse in Grímsey stands on the island’s southeast corner and is a popular photography spot. It provides a vantage point for observing cliffs, birdlife, and the island’s eastern coast.
  • Miðgarðar (area of the Island church) : The church was built in 1867 from driftwood and was relocated in 1932 for fire safety, undergoing extensive renovations. Its 1878 altar painting, a local artist’s copy of a Leonardo da Vinci work, and historical significance led to its conservation status in 1990. Tragically, in 2021, an electrical fire left the community without this historical and cultural landmark. Efforts to rebuild the church are underway.

Whether you spend a day or a week on beautiful Grímsey Island, you are sure to make some memories that will last a lifetime! Summer is the best time to visit Ice l and and enjoy the stunning natural landscapes that are unique to the land of fire and ice.

Tour description

Grimsey in Steingrímsfjörður is the biggest island in the Strandir region. The legend says that Grimsey was made when three trolls tried to dig the Westfjords apart from Iceland. They tossed stones, lava, and mud in all directions, forming Grimsey Island and all the islands in Breiðafjörður. Fortunately, the trolls didn’t succeed, but only 8 km remained on sunrise, and the trolls turned to rock. People lived on the island until the 20th century, both fishermen and farmers.

We offer boat tours twice a day from June 15th – August 15th to Grímsey island in Steingrímsfjörður to view the ocean wildlife (birds, seals, whales, and puffins). Grímsey has the largest island nesting site for Puffin; the estimated quantity is 300.000 birds, and there of about 80.000 nesting couples. The tour takes approximately 3 hours, and we sail around Grímsey island. One stop is made to go on the island for those who want to, with an English-speaking, native guide.

Please bring: Good shoes, a warm sweater, a hat/beanie, a camera, your good mood 🙂 !

Grímsey

Although it lies on the Arctic Circle, the island enjoys a mild climate, and supports enormously large bird colonies. About 155 people live in Grímsey, the main occupations are fishing and fish processing, with agriculture and collecting seabirds’ eggs as sidelines.

Grímsey is a separate local government area, and there was a resident vicar until the middle of this century. The church, which was built from driftwood in 1867 and renovated in 1956, is now under the parish of Akureyri. There is also a community center and school on the island, and co-operative shop. Regular air and ferry services link Grímsey to Akureyri.

According to folk tradition, the island is named after Vestfjarda-Grimur Sigurdsson. Heimskringla (old sagas) states how King Ólafur of Norway asked for the island as a gift, but the Icelanders rejected the idea, since the king would’ve had an army stationed there. In the late 18th century it seemed that the community’s fate was to die out, since most of the men expired by pneumonia or accidents at sea. However, the community has endured to this day, even though the population has lessened a little.

In the late 19th century the people of Grímsey were known for their prowess in chess. An American, Willard Fiske, presented them with chess sets, a library and a sum of money to persue this.

The island is a popular tourist destination, and certificates are issued there for crossing the Arctic Circle.

Our Grímsey tour can be offered both for divers and snorkelers. When diving around Grímsey you can dive under the arctic circle with Puffins and the Guillemot birds. In the blue and clear cold arctic sea around Grímsey where you dive the bottom is covered with celp forests and there you can see Cod, Plaice and big steams of Pollock. Both big and small whales are usually not far away. We will go with the ferry from the harbour in Akureyri late Friday and come back to Akureyri late Saturday. We do 2 dives around Grímsey and after the dives we walk around the island. By special request we can plan a Grímsey tour for you on other days as well.
