What is a Game of Thrones Tour?

A Game of Thrones Tour (often abbreviated GoT Tour), combines the history of Dubrovnik, with filming locations from the uber-popular HBO television show, Game of Thrones which was adapted from George R.R. Martin’s ‘A Song of Ice and Fire’ epic novel series. This TV series was filmed extensively in the Old Town of Dubrovnik, as well as in a few other locations close to the city including Lokrum Island, Fort Lovrijenac, and Trsteno Arboretum.

Dubrovnik GoT Tours that include the Arboretum often also include a visit to Mount Srd, which while it didn’t actually feature in the GoT series, provides a wonderful view down over Old Town Dubrovnik.

Most Dubrovnik GoT Tours include both the actual history of Croatia and Dubrovnik with anecdotes from the filming of the TV show. Many GoT tours are led by people who worked on the show in one way or another and can include behind-the-scenes information varying from encounters with the famous actors on the show to details about how the filming affected local residents.

These Dubrovnik Game of Thrones tours are a thrill for super fans of the show but are also a fun way for families and non-fans to learn more about Dubrovnik in a light-hearted and fun way.

These GoT tours are hosted by local tour guides who are experts on the history of the area and are able to add behind-the-scenes stories that bring the TV show to life, while also giving you a walking tour of the major sites of Dubrovnik, Croatia.

On most tours Dubrovnik GoT Tours, you’ll not only learn about the filming, but you’ll see hidden gems in the city that you probably would have missed on your own. A GoT tour allows you to see a lot more, in a lot less time than if you are trying to navigate on your own. Tour guides will also have photos of the relevant scenes from the show to help you picture where you are standing, and envision the Game of Thrones set that stood there.

Tips for Enjoying Your GoT Tour in Dubrovnik

-Be prepared for a lot of stairs and a lot of walking on many of these tours. Some visitors feel like they have climbed 1,000 stairs by the end. Dubrovnik is located on a steep hill, so make sure you wear comfortable shoes.

-Some tours include a ticket to walk the city walls of Dubrovnik. Actually walking a circuit of the walls takes about two hours, so this is generally not part of the Dubrovnik GoT tours. Some tours will end at the walls so that you can begin this walk on your own. We highly recommend walking the city walls while visiting Dubrovnik, but it’s best done as early as possible in the morning to avoid the crowds and the heat.

-Most GoT tours do not include entrance fees to additional sites including the round trip ferry to Lokrum Island (27€), and the Trsteno Arboretum (10€). These fees can add up, especially for larger parties, so read the details of each tour carefully before booking. Keep in mind that you may want to purchase a Dubrovnik Pass which includes entrance to the city walls and the Fort Lovrijenac.

GAME OF THRONES DUBROVNIK TOURS - All You Need to Know BEFORE You Go

The Discoveries Of

The Dubrovnik Game of Thrones Guide: Filming Locations, A Self-Guided Tour, Map +More!

Love Game of Thrones? Visiting Dubrovnik? Don’t miss this step by step guide to discovering the best Dubrovnik Game of Thrones locations, complete with a self-guided tour itinerary and map.

OK guys, stay cool. We’re going to talk Game of Thrones and Dubrovnik here.

Much as I pretend to be laid back about things, say the words Game of Thrones to me and any vestige of reserve is thrown out of the window. I LOVE it… disappointing ending and all.

Big chat from someone whose first thoughts about the TV programme were

“ I don’t really get what the fuss is about, it’s a bit dull and nothing happens” .

Shame. Shame. Shame.

Anyway, I now know better. Much, much better.

These past few years have unintentionally turned into something of an homage to Game of Thrones and House of the Dragon .

From jetting off to Iceland (north of The Wall) to popping up in Seville (Dorne) and zipping around Northern Ireland (Winterfell, The Iron Islands, Dorne and more) I’ve been doing the rounds.

But Dubrovnik was a whole other level.

Views of Dubrovnik from the City Walls

Did you know that King’s Landing is set in Croatia ? That large sections of the most popular TV show on the planet were filmed in Dubrovnik?

Of course you did, that’s why you’re here.

King’s Landing is Dubrovnik. The epicentre of the series. The setting for dastardly plans, beheadings, murders, schemes and general good old-fashioned rolls in the hay.

I am going to take you on an odyssey into Dubrovnik’s (ahem, King’s Landing) filming locations. The must-see spots, insider titbits and a few random but awesome facts thrown in for good measure.

This is what you need to know…

In a hurry? I recommend booking this Game of Thrones Tour of Dubrovnik to discover all the well-known (and secret) filming locations, plus insider gossip from the set.

Book a Game of Thrones Tour of Dubrovnik

So the easiest way to delve into the world of Game of Thrones is on a tour.

Not only does a tour highlight some of the best King’s Landing filming locations, but many of the tour guides also double up as extras on the set, so can give you juicy bits of gossip about how scenes were filmed and what the actors are actually like.

I booked onto this tour and loved it.

Our guide Dora grew up in Dubrovnik, worked as an extra on the programme in the early series and stood in as a self-described “human puppet” for some of the scenes in Series 8.

You can spot her in Series 4 Episode 1 as a lady-in-waiting in the scene when Sansa is sitting with Shae and finds out her mother and brother are dead.

The ultimate guide to discovering Game of Thrones in Dubrovnik. A self-guided tour of the old town and other locations used in the seasons - complete with pictures and a map. Dont miss it! #got #gameofthrones #travel #dubrovnik

Dora’s sister (and in later series, Dora herself) worked behind the scenes as human puppets – being placed in the scene so that the cameramen could get everything right before the actor came onto the scene to film their part.

Sounds like a pretty cool gig right?!

Anyway, Dora took us on a romp around the city that spanned many of the most important spots of King’s Landing in Dubrovnik.

All the while making us laugh with her tongue in cheek humour and extensive knowledge about which scene was filmed where and the tricks of the trade used by the producers to get everything looking just right.

You can book onto the same tour, which lasts for two hours here

Take my advice and book on the earliest tour of the day at 9.30am, the city is a bit quieter and it’s not so hot. Don’t forget to bring plenty of water either.

Aside from the main Game of Thrones tour of Dubrovnik, there are other tours leaving from Dubrovnik that cover locations further afield. These include:

  • Game of Thrones Lokrum Island Tour
  • Game of Thrones Complete Dubrovnik Tour – As this tour involves a car, it covers a broader range of locations including Mount Srd and Trsteno Botanical Gardens, two filming locations outside of the city “proper”

Exploring Dubrovnik’s Game of Thrones Filming Locations Independently

Julianna Barnaby at Dubrovnik City Walls

If you don’t fancy booking onto a tour, there’s more than enough information in this article for you to create your own self-guided Game of Thrones tour of Dubrovnik.

This has several bonuses: it’s cheaper, you can take everything at your own pace and you can see EVEN MORE spots than you’d be able to on a guided tour.

Make sure you check out my suggested route and Dubrovnik Game of Thrones map later on in the post.

The Perfect King’s Landing Dubrovnik Photo Spot

King's Landing Photo Spot in Dubrovnik

Before we get into the nitty gritty of which Game of Thrones scenes were filmed in Dubrovnik, can we just take a moment to appreciate how spectacular Dubrovnik looks as King’s Landing overall.

It’s not exactly the same as King’s Landing. Turns out that the Sept of Baelor is a building in Girona (Spain) and is CGI’d into the cityscape.

You can also spot that the exterior of the Red Keep doesn’t actually exist at all and is also the work of some nifty CGI…

Explains why when you watch Game of Thrones scenes in King’s Landing, you almost always have the Red Keep looming in the background, even if it’s in a completely different place to where it was before.

Suggested King’s Landing Dubrovnik Photo Spot: Fort Lovrijenac

Did You Know: That in season one, King’s Landing was actually filmed in Malta. Dubrovnik is only used as King’s Landing from season two onwards. Why did they change the location of King’s Landing to Dubrovnik? Apparently, the crew left a few sites in Malta in less than pristine condition and basically Malta told them to jog on… Wonder if they regret that decision?

16 Unmissable Dubrovnik Game of Thrones Locations

Fort lovrijenac.

Views of Fort Lovrejinac Dubrovnik

Standing atop a tall cliff over Pile Bay, and originally built as part of the city’s defenses, Fort Lovrijenac is one of the King’s Landing filming locations that crops up time and time again.

Remember that scene where Cersei and Littlefinger are (rather heatedly) discussing what makes you powerful? Littlefinger thinks that knowledge is power, but then Cersei gets the Gold Cloaks to hold a knife to his throat and reiterates that power is power.

Watch The Scene Here

Well, here you are…

Or what about the scene when the men try to rape Sansa after the riots in King’s Landing? Look familiar?

I love that at one end of the corridor, they filmed the scene where Sansa is being attacked and the Hound comes to save her….

While at the other end of the corridor they filmed the scene where Joffrey is safe in the Red Keep and Tyrion Lannister slaps him round the face (ps, there’s a GIF of this scene, watch it whenever you’re feeling stressed).

One riot, one scene fraught with danger, another supposedly in perfect safety, both filmed in the same location.

The fort’s upper level also pops up in the scenes where it’s Joffrey’s name day celebrations and Ser Dontos turns up wasted – saved from being put to death by some quick thinking on Sansa’s part.

Fort Lovrijenac

Did you know: Fort Lovrijenac is also used as a wedding venue, so quite a few people have Game of Thrones-themed weddings there. Let’s just hope that their marriages work out better than the ones in the programme. Robert and Cersei, Joffrey and Margaery, Tyrion and Sansa… not exactly examples of marital bliss.

The Ultimate Dubrovnik Game of Thrones Guide! Map, Scenes, Pictures and Insider Tips on Game of Thrones. From the Old Town to Lokrum Island, these are the spots that fans shouldn't miss! #gameofthrones #dubrovnik #travel

Pile Gate is the main entrance to Dubrovnik’s Old Town.

It pops up in Game of Thrones as the scene of the riot in King’s Landing. You know the one… when someone throws a cow pat at Joffrey’s head and all hell breaks loose.

The gate is pretty recognisable as they didn’t really change anything in the scene.

You can even see the statue of St Blaise, Dubrovnik’s patron saint overlooking the absolute madness.

Did You Know? The riot in King’s Landing needed around 500 extras to yell, shout and generally act like badly-behaved plebs.  As English wasn’t most of the extras’ first language, they all ended up yelling the same thing, like a chant on the football field. Obviously, that wouldn’t do, so the crew put the people who spoke better English near the mics and told them to yell in English while the rest could yell whatever they want. As a result – you can hear a lot of Croatian in this scene… including one dude who’s yelling “Buy my potatoes for 20 kunas” lol.

The Pile Gate is also the setting for the scene where Jaime comes back to King’s Landing without his hand and generally looking a bit worse for wear. Poor Jaime *swoon*.

The Jesuit Staircase – Cersei’s Walk of Shame in Dubrovnik

Now if there ever was a scene in Game of Thrones that made you sit up and rub your eyes to check that what you were seeing was real, it was Cersei’s infamous Walk of Shame.

No self-respecting Game of Thrones fan could visit without paying homage to the Cersei Walk of Shame on what’s been nicknamed the “Game of Thrones Steps” in Dubrovnik.

It was all very hush hush when they filmed this scene. The crew used this alley for three days while they filmed the walk of shame.

They had to pay all of the people overlooking the lane to close their windows and also to sign a confidentiality agreement to say that they wouldn’t talk about what they had seen.

Stairs of Shame Dubrovnik

It’s also not Cersei walking naked in the scene. Lena Headey, the actress who plays the power-hungry megalomaniac was pregnant at the time.

Turns out it’s not a great idea to shout and throw things at a woman in the first trimester… who knew? She’s also pretty tatted up, which is why you see Cersei in long sleeves a lot of the time. And there was me thinking she just had a thing with power dressing.

Now I know the temptation is to replicate the walk of shame – but beware of going the whole hog.

The city authorities charge some pretty eye-watering fines for being in public in the buff and they’ve even arrested people for public indecency.

Best keep your clothes and just get your mates to spit on you instead (not).

Did you know: Cersei’s walk of shame was supposed to be filmed in front of the Cathedral. However, Croatia is a very Roman Catholic country.  A lot of the locals didn’t like the idea of a naked woman being filmed in front of the Cathedral, so they moved it to the Jesuit Staircase instead.

The Rector’s Palace

The Rector's Palace Dubrovnik

So far, all of the spots I’ve covered in this Game of Thrones Dubrovnik guide have featured Dubrovnik as King’s Landing.

But Dubrovnik also appears in the show as one other location and that is (pause for suspense), Qarth.

Oh Qarth. A lot of skulduggery and naughty deception goes down in Qarth.

The rather saucy and impertinent Spice King is there just to rile Daenerys up and refuse whatever it is she’s demanding that particular day.

The Rector’s Palace appears in Season 2 as the Spice King’s mansion and the place where he refuses to give her ships so that she and the Dothraki can cross the Narrow Sea. Mistake.

The City Walls

Views from the City Walls Dubrovnik

If you really only have the time to visit a couple of Game of Thrones locations in Dubrovnik, make sure that the City Walls is one of them.

Lots of short Game of Thrones scenes filmed in Dubrovnik were filmed here, including the one where Cersei chooses The Mountain as her champion against Tyrion.

More than this, the city walls are also one of Dubrovnik’s most spectacular attractions.

Did you know: Winter has FINALLY arrived by the end of Season 7. Cue a few shots of Dubrovnik covered in snow. The crew had to use fake snow during filming, but a month after they finished filming, Dubrovnik had its first snow in ten years! Winter really did come to Dubrovnik.

Fort Minceta

The ultimate guide to discovering Game of Thrones in Dubrovnik. A self-guided tour of the old town and other locations used in the seasons - complete with pictures and a map. Dont miss it! #got #gameofthrones #travel #dubrovnik

Fort Minceta is the highest point in the Old Town and one of the prettiest spots on the City Walls.

Nothing was actually filmed inside of the fort, but the outside serves as the outside of the House of the Undying when Daenerys is going to reclaim her dragons after the Warlocks of Qarth steal them from her.

Another bad decision on their part.

Fort Bokar Dubrovnik

Somehow, in stepping inside of the House of the Undying, Daenerys teleports from Fort Minceta to Fort Bokar, another one of the Old Town’s forts.

This is pretty much where Daenerys’ problem with burning people to death starts (please take note all you people whining that she went crazy and burned everyone to death in the last series. She’s always been crazy and has always enjoyed burning people to death, they just got you to root for her while she was doing it).

Can see how it happens: at the beginning you’re just burning the warlocks who tried to steal your dragons, by the end you’re burning poor men in the field of battle by the scores.

These things spiral out of control right?

The Fort is actually closed to the public so you can’t go inside – but you can spot it from your walks on the city walls.

Did you know: That when Daenerys dragons burns the warlock  Lord of the Undying to death in this scene, they actually set a real stuntman on fire. Apparently, it’s really hard to create realistic computer-generated fire, so the stuntman wears a special suit and gel to protect him as they blast him with fire. Sounds terrifying.

St Dominic Street and the Dominican Monastery

The ultimate guide to discovering Game of Thrones in Dubrovnik. A self-guided tour of the old town and other locations used in the seasons - complete with pictures and a map. Dont miss it! #got #gameofthrones #travel #dubrovnik

This street, leading from the Ploce Gate to Stradun, is the setting of many of the market scenes in King’s Landing.

Tyrion and Bronn also watch a protest speech against the Lannisters in Season 2 here.

The Ploče Gate is another of Dubrovnik’s city gates, guarding the entrance to the east of the Old Town.

Although it doesn’t get quite the same dramatic attention as the Pile Gate, it’s where Tyrion and Lancel Lannister have their little chat in Series 2.

The Ploče Gate is also where Cersei escapes the humiliation at the hands of the High Sparrow and enters the Red Keep after the Walk of Shame in Series 5 Episode 10.

The Stradun

The ultimate guide to discovering Game of Thrones in Dubrovnik. A self-guided tour of the old town and other locations used in the seasons - complete with pictures and a map. Dont miss it! #got #gameofthrones #travel #dubrovnik

The Stradun is the main street in Dubrovnik’s Old Town and features as part of Cersei’s walk of shame through Dubrovnik in Mother’s Mercy in Season Five.

Try walking along the Stradun at peak times and you can really start to feel some of Cersei’s pain – it is packed. But beautiful nonetheless.

Trsteno Arboretum

games of thrones tour dubrovnik

Another King’s Landing filming location that’s outside of the city centre. It’s used as the Red Keep’s gardens – its lush setting features as the backdrop for so many hushed conversations throughout seasons three and four.

Trsteno Arboretum is about a 30 minute drive from Dubrovnik, so you are best off getting a taxi or bus if you plan to visit it independently.

Ethnographic Museum

On a normal day, the Ethnographic Museum parades as a mild-mannered museum displaying artifacts related to the Croat people.

In Game of Thrones, it sheds its daily appearance to strut onto the scene as Littlefinger’s Brothel.

From Oberyn and Elia entertaining a number of Littlefinger’s employees on their arrival in King’s Landing, to the killing of Robert Baratheon’s bastard, the museum’s four walls have seen some pretty hair-raising scenes.

Pop in but you don’t need much time to explore.

Pile Bay or West Harbour

Pile Bay Dubrovnik

Pile Bay is one of my favourite spots in Dubrovnik.

A gorgeous little cove sitting between Fort Lovrijenac and the Old Town, it’s the jumping off point for kayaking tours around Dubrovnik’s crystal clear waters.

It’s no wonder that such a picturesque location crops up so many times in Game of Thrones.

Sansa and Shae sit at the end of the dock here, watching the boats pass by, guessing where the boats are going before Littlefinger barges in for a private word with Sansa.

Or what about the scene where Cersei bids goodbye to Myrcella when she’s departing for Dorne, just before the King’s Landing gates? You guessed it, Pile Bay too.

Myrcella also receives her fatal kiss from Elyria as she’s leaving Dorne with Jaime in Pile Bay.

Cue the totally emotional scene between her and  Jaime, her uncle and, as she acknowledges, father as she dies in his hands. Only in Game of Thrones right?

Did you know: That in the scene where Cersei sees Jaime returning to King’s Landing alone (also filmed in Pile Bay), Jaime wasn’t actually present, so in reality, Lena Headey was actually crying and clutching onto an orange balloon, later to be magically CGI’d into Jaime Lannister. What a great actress eh?

Dubac Quarry

Now this one’s for the really dedicated among you. I mentioned that a lot of scenes for Qarth were also filmed in and around Dubrovnik.

Dubac Quarry was used as the set for the scenes filmed outside of Qarth’s gates when the Thirteen refuse Daenerys entry to Qarth before Xaro Xhoan Daxos invokes Sumai and makes her his guest.

It’s about 30 minutes outside of the city, so you need to grab transport for this one.

Gradac Park

The ultimate guide to discovering Game of Thrones in Dubrovnik. A self-guided tour of the old town and other locations used in the seasons - complete with pictures and a map. Dont miss it! #got #gameofthrones #travel #dubrovnik

Gradac Park, across the bay from Fort Lovrijenac only really crops up in one episode but what an episode. It’s the setting for the Purple Wedding.

If you weren’t itching for someone to get rid of the sneering, prancing, cruel boy-king that was Joffrey “Baratheon” by this point in the series, you’re a better person than I.

Little did we know that it would be done with such aplomb.

The park’s pine woods are also a lovely location for a picnic. Maybe just don’t think about Joffer’s purple and engorged face while you are eating your lunch.

Did you know: If you watch the Purple Wedding scene carefully, you can actually see Lady Olenna take the poisonous bead that kills Joffrey from Sansa’s necklace as she offers Sansa her condolences for the death of her mother and brother. Most people don’t spot it as you’re distracted by Joffrey’s torture of Tyrion but IT’S THERE. Don’t mess with the Queen of Thorns or she’ll poison you then taunt your father with the details of her dastardly deeds just before she dies. Ice cold baby, ice cold.

Hotel Belvedere

Now this one’s not in the city itself – it’s about a 40 minute walk away from the Old Town, so one for the die hard fans.

You can’t get into the hotel itself as it’s derelict, but you can scoot around to see the atrium where Prince Oberyn fights the Mountain in The Mountain and the Viper at the end of Season Four.

You know the scene where you really think that Oberyn has defeated the Mountain but then he keeps on talking and talking and ends up getting his head crushed in. Oh Oberyn, we loved you so much too.

Still, the Mountain doesn’t come out of the encounter that well – it’s the turning point for him going all monster to Qyburn’s Frankenstein.

Lokrum Island

Views from the Highest Point on Lokrum

The island of Lokrum is a short jaunt away from Dubrovnik.

A 15-minute boat ride with spectacular views of Dubrovnik isn’t exactly a hardship to visit another cool Dubrovnik Game of Thrones location.

Head to the Benedictine Monastery. It was used to film the Qarth garden party scenes when Daenerys meets the warlords. There’s even a Game of Thrones Museum on the island where you can sit on the Iron Throne (eep!).

Do spend some time exploring Lokrum too – it’s got some really lovely coves that are great for swimming, a small botanical garden and an abandoned fort – it’s a lovely place to spend a day during your time in Dubrovnik.

Alternatively, you can book this Game of Thrones tour of Lokrum here

Visit the Dubrovnik Game of Thrones Shop

The ultimate guide to discovering Game of Thrones in Dubrovnik. A self-guided tour of the old town and other locations used in the seasons - complete with pictures and a map. Dont miss it! #got #gameofthrones #travel #dubrovnik

OK, clearly this isn’t a filming location per se, but the Dubrovnik Game of Thrones shop is filled with all kinds of Game of Thrones memorabilia for your collection.

More importantly, it’s one of the locations where you can sit on the Iron Throne in Dubrovnik.

Unless you’re on the tour I mentioned earlier, you have to buy something to get a picture on the Iron Throne. Small price to pay.

How Did You Know When Game of Thrones Was Filming in Dubrovnik?

They took down the flags at the Pile Gate and put up the Lannister flag.

Suggested Game of Thrones Dubrovnik Self-Guided Tour Itinerary

  • Start early with a hike up to Fort Lovrijenac
  • Walk down from the Fort to Pile Bay
  • Enter the Old Town through the Pile Gate
  • Visit The Ethnographic Museum
  • Head to the Jesuit Staircase for your walk of shame
  • Pop into the Rector’s Palace to deny Daenerys your ships
  • Walk to the Dominican Monastery
  • Go to Ploce Gate and head up onto the City Walls
  • Walk around the city walls to Fort Minceta and for great views of Fort Bokar
  • Give yourself a huge pat on the back

I’d suggest doing Lokrum on a separate day – leave pretty much the whole day to explore and relax on the island, you won’t regret it.

If you still have time, use your third day to navigate around the filming locations outside of the city centre.

Used as King’s Landing in the hit show, it is easy to see how the magical old town became the capital of the Seven Kingdoms. As the setting for a make-believe medieval world, it is easy to visit some of the many filming locations either by booking a guided tour online or exploring the old town on foot on your own.

George Bernard Shaw said, “those who seek paradise on Earth come to Dubrovnik.” This picturesque city is now a Mecca for “thronees” who, flock to experience this Pearl of the Adriatic, which became a Unesco world heritage Site in 1979.

In this post, you will learn everything about Game of Thrones tours in Dubrovnik , including:

Dubrovnik was the picture-perfect filming location for Blackwater Bay, the House of the Undying and Pile Gate and could have leaped straight out of the pages of RR Martin’s novel .

Many famous scenes were shot here such as Cersei’s walk of shame, King Joffrey’s tournament and Daenerys Taragareyn’s visit to Quarth. You may enjoy visiting all the filming locations of the Game of Thrones in this sunny coastal city.

We will list the most popular film locations to visit, to conquer the realm, below!

1 – Pile Gate

Pile Gate - Game of Thrones tours in Dubrovnik

Pile Gate is the ancient entrance to the old town, and from here you can enjoy views over a nearby small fishing harbor.

A fortified complex, with multiple doors defended by Fort Bokar and the moat that once ran around the city wall the fort has been used in many scenes.

Pike gate is where an angry mob attacks the Lannister procession after returning after Myrcella’s send-off.

2 – Lovrijenac Fortress

Lovrijenac Fortress - Game of Thrones tours in Dubrovnik

Perched precariously on the top of a cliff in the old town with sheer rock faces slipping into the Adriatic, it features as the Red Keep.

Many scenes were filmed here, including the gripping tournament that was thrown in honor of King Joffrey’s name day in season 2.

3 – Lokrum Island

Lokrum Island - Game of Thrones tours in Dubrovnik

This lush forested island is reached by a 15-minute boat ride from the Old City Harbour and doubling as the city of Quarth near the glittering Jade Sea.

There is a small Game of Thrones visitor center here that you can see the Iron Throne, gifted to Dubrovnik by GOT.

The island is Dubrovnik’s green jewel, and many locals relax here after a long summer day in the unique lake, linked to the sea.

It most famously appears in season 2 when Daenerys Targaryen visits Quarth to socialize with the city’s elite.

The island is a protected forest reserve, and many more scenes were filmed in the lush botanical gardens and the former Benedictine monastery.

4 – West Harbour

West Harbour - Game of Thrones tours in Dubrovnik

The pier on Dubrovnik’s west harbour was used as Blackwater Bay in the series.

The curious doors in the harbor can be seen in series 2 when the gold cloaks were ordered to murder all of King Robert Baratheon’s bastard children.

5 – Trsteno Arboretum

Trsteno Arboretum - Game of Thrones tours in Dubrovnik

Situated 24 km (15 miles) north-west of Dubrovnik the Arboretum covers an area of 25 hectares and was originally the park and summer residence of the patrician family Gučetić-Gozze.

A renaissance residence the grounds incorporate a garden, aqueduct, mill, the beautiful fountain with the Sea-God Neptune and nymphs, the belvedere pavilion overlooking the sea and the Elaphite islands.

Used as the setting in the Game of Thrones Seasons 3 and 4, no Game of Thrones tour would be complete without viewing these unique gardens, where we see many of the main characters plot and discuss their secrets.

It is mostly associated with the scenes involving the powerful family, the Tyrells giving it the nickname the “Tyrell (High) Garden.”

6 – Bokar Fortress

Bokar Fortress - Game of Thrones tours in Dubrovnik

The Bokar Fortress was built in 1461 to defend the entrance to the city. The oldest fortified structure in Europe.

Fort Bokar featured in season 2 of Game of Thrones when Tyrion and Lord Varys planned the defense of King’s Landing while looking out to sea.

They used the same location in season 7, when Cersei tells Jaime that she is planning to establish an alliance with Euron Grayjoy.

It is also seen in season 8, when Daenerys decides to burn the city, in spite of the bell ringing as a sign of surrender.

7 – Walls of Dubrovnik

Walls of Dubrovnik - Game of Thrones tours in Dubrovnik

The famous Dubrovnik walls surround the old city and can be accessed with a day ticket or on a Game of Thrones Tour.

The seaside walls are seen in the famous Battle of Blackwater Bay scenes, where the green wild-fire ripped apart the attacking fleet of Stannis Baratheon.

When Tyrion and Lord Varys plan the defence of Kings Landing on the Bokar Fortress, we see the city walls and the Red Keep in the background and in season 6 when Jaime Lannister sails towards Kings Landing with the dead body of Myrcella.

The West Wall near Pile Gate is used as a practice yard in season 4, when Cersie visits the mountain while he is killing prisoners, to ask him to be her champion on trial by combat of Tyrion.

In season 5, Lancel leads a squad of the Faith Militant to apprehend Loras Tyrell while he is practicing swordplay in the practice yard.

8 – Jesuit Staircase

Jesuit Staircase - Game of Thrones tours in Dubrovnik

Allegedly one of the most famous and expensive scenes was filmed here! Cersie Lannister looks down on the disapproving crowd from the top of the stairs and walks naked through the maze of streets to the Red keep as a woman screams “shame” in her ear.

All of the bars, restaurants and vendors in the street below had to be paid a full-days work to compensate for the day’s filming!

9 – St Dominic Street

Saint Dominik Street - Game of Thrones tours in Dubrovnik

Dubrovnik’s walled old city is a maze of tangled lanes and tightly packed stone houses.

Many Game of Thrones market scenes play out in these streets and is where City Watch or ‘Gold Cloaks’ skulk ominously.

The murders of King Robert’s illegitimate sons took place here and in season five and Cersie walks through the town naked, as a sign of penance.

10 – Rector´s Palace

Rector´s Palace - Game of Thrones tours in Dubrovnik

One of the most recognizable buildings in Dubrovnik, the Palace was built in the mid 15th century in the Gothic style with some Baroque details for the Rector of the Republic of Regusa.

Now a museum, you can see many examples of the rich heritage of the Dubrovnik Republic.

It has gained more recognition in modern times due to the Game of Thrones.

The façade of the Rector’s Palace is the backdrop for the scene when Daenerys Targaryen asks the Spice King of Quarth for ships to take her army across the Narrow Sea.

11 – Minceta Tower

Minceta Tower - Game of Thrones tours in Dubrovnik

The most impressive fort in Dubrovnik, this tower is regarded by many as the symbol of the city.

The attraction was used as the House of the Undying and did not undergo any CGI, so is one of the most life-like film locations.

The base of the tower is where Daenerys Targaryen searches for her stolen dragons in season 2.

Although they didn’t film any scenes at the top, it is the highest point in Dubrovnik and worth seeing for the outstanding views.

12 – Gradac Park

Gradac Park - Game of Thrones tours in Dubrovnik

Head to Gradac Park, a lovely Mediterranean park from which you will enjoy a stunning view of Dubrovnik.

Gradac Park is filmed during season 4 at he Purple Wedding where King Joffrey is poisoned and Tyrion Lannister arrested.

13 – Ploce Gate

Ploce Gate - Game of Thrones tours in Dubrovnik

The Place Gate is the east entrance to the Old Town of Dubrovnik.

The Ploce Gate was filmed in season 2 when Tyrion and Lancel Lannister are talking with Bronn in the background, and season 5 when Cercei enters the Red Keep after her walk of shame.

How should I explore the filming locations of the Game of Thrones in Dubrovnik?

Game of Thrones film locations in Dubrovnik

Most of the Game of Thrones filming locations in the Old City are reached on foot, however, for the more distant locations, you will need to use motorised transport or on water.

Many Game of Thrones tours in Dubrovnik offer the opportunity to “pick and mix” these options.

These tours offer a specialised guide, who may have worked in the production of the series or been an extra. They take around 2 hours and due to the many stairs in the old city are not advisable if you have walking difficulties.

You will climb the city walls imagining the bloody battles from the TV series, and visit Lovrijenac Fortress to learn about the evil exploits of King Joffrey. Follow in the footsteps of Ayra Stark and hear insider gossip galore about the popular series.

By cable car

Ascend the craggy Mt Srđ in the spacious comfortable cable car affording incredible views of Dubrovnik and the Adriatic. Then descend to the Old Town and begin an information-packed walking tour of the UNESCO World Heritage-listed site.

Finally, climb up to the walls, strolling along the medieval fortifications while learning about the fascinating history of the city.

Sail into the magical world of Game of Thrones on the same ship on which Daenerys Targaryen sailed in the series.

This exciting 2-hour tour takes you to filming locations including Lokrum Island. Hear interesting details about the characters and events from behind the scenes from your guide whilst sipping a cocktail or dressing up as a character.

These tours will often incorporate a walking tour through the city.

If you wish to visit the arboretum and Mount Srdj, where you will have the best view of King’s Landing, the highest point above Dubrovnik then you will need to book a full-day tour taking 7 hours.

This will also include the walking tour of the old town and normally a boat trip to the fictional Quarth Island.

Take a break from walking the busy streets of Dubrovnik city centre and admire the historic walls on a kayaking adventure.

Setting out from pile gate you can Paddle to the Island of Lokrum and get the chance to swim and snorkel in the crystal clear waters of the Adriatic Sea whilst seeing the city walls and Lokrum Island.

By kayak & bike

Kayak from Lopud and trade your paddle for peddles midway through! Bike across Sipan island through vineyards, olive groves, chapels, and medieval villages and stop for a delicious lunch of local delicacies at one of the region’s best-kept restaurant secrets.

How much does a Game of Thrones tour in Dubrovnik cost? How to book a tour?

Game of Thrones tours in Dubrovnik price

The cost of Game of Thrones tours in Dubrovnik will depend on your mode of transport and how many film locations you want to pack in. Prices start at around €20 for a 2-hour small group walking tour and you should try to book a tour which includes your outer wall ticket.

The next level is a walking tour with a boat trip starting at €35 to sail on the same ship Daenerys Targaryen with a few added luxuries starting at €48.

Some of the tours are cheaper if it is not specific to the Game of Thrones but you might miss out on some locations.

Hello Jetlag

The Dubrovnik Game of Thrones Self-Guided Walking Tour

Airing on TV screens in 170 countries, Game of Thrones is most popular show in the world. While the series is filmed in about 7 different countries, Dubrovnik is used to film most of the exterior shots of King’s Landing. I didn’t start watching the show until right before my trip to Croatia, and then I binge watched the series so that I could be one of the cool kids. Keep reading for comparison photos, maps and an easy self-guided, Dubrovnik Game of Thrones walking tour.

Tips for the Dubrovnik Game of Thrones Walking Tour

SAVE MONEY BY PURCHASING A DUBROVNIK CARD. Not only does it give you access to the walls and Fort Lovrijenac, but it includes admission to Rector’s Palace as well (all sights you will be visiting on the Dubrovnik Game of Thrones tour). A 1 day Dubrovnik Card costs 190HRK ($30USD) or 171HRK($27USD) online . If you purchase the admissions separately, the walls cost 150HRK ($24USD includes entrance to Fort Lovrijenac), and admission to Rector’s Palace is 100HRK ($16).

Buy the Dubrovnik Card HERE

PURCHASE YOUR DUBROVNIK CARD OR CITY WALL TICKETS BEFORE STARTING THE TOUR You must purchase tickets  outside of Old Town’s Pile Gate. Do it before you begin the tour so you don’t have to backtrack

SET YOUR OWN PACE  I’ve separated the tour into 3 parts. You can choose to do the whole tour in 1 day, or split it up into sections to work with your vacation and schedule.

START EARLY If you choose to complete the tour in 1 day, know that there is a lot of ground to cover, so start early! As of August 2017, the mayor is in talks to limit the number of tourists inside the city walls at one time to 4,000. Arriving early will ensure your entry.

QUEUE UP THE THEME SONG  Download the Game of Thrones theme song to your phone and use it as background music while you wander through the streets. Trust me, you won’t be the only one.

BRING WATER  Pack a water bottle, and re-fill it as you go. There are several fountains with drinkable water throughout the city.

SAVE THE GOOGLE MAP Within the city walls, Dubrovnik is tiny and the streets are narrow. I’ve listed directions to all the locations but some streets may not have signs. Referring to the pins on the Google Map will be the easiest way to locate the next spot during the Dubrovnik Game of Thrones tour. Most are within 2-5 minutes from each other.

THE DUBROVNIK GAME OF THRONES SELF GUIDED WALKING TOUR

The Dubrovnik Game of Thrones Walking Tour is separated into 3 parts, Old Town + Fort Lovrijenac, The City Walls and Lokrum Island. You can do the whole tour in 1 day, or split it up into sections to work with your vacation and schedule. On the Google map above, the markers are color coded.

Yellow: Sites along the city walls |  Green: Sites on Lokrum Island |  Purple: Sites at Pile Bay and Fort Lovrijenac |  Teal: Sites within Old Town Dubrovnik |  Peach: Additional Locations Off the Beaten Path

If you choose to do the tour in one day, I recommend doing all three parts in order as outlined below.

SPOILERS BEYOND THIS POINT

games of thrones tour dubrovnik

PART I: Old Town and Fort Lovrijenac

Fort lovrijenac.

Begin the Dubrovnik Game of Thrones Tour standing in front of Pile Bay.

To get here, begin at the main square right outside of Pile Gate. Walk away from Old Town on the left side of the street, and turn left on Ul. Svetog Durda, walking toward the water. Wind your way down this street until you reach the entrance of the bay.

You’ll recognize the multiple areas of Pile Bay (aka Blackwater Bay) from several episodes in the series:

To your right is a little middle earth-esque cliffside staircase.  During season 2 episode 1, King Joffrey orders all of Robert Baratheon’s bastard children to be killed so that they don’t threaten his claim to the throne. One of the scenes shows the Gold Cloaks raiding homes here.

Game of Thrones Filming Locations in Dubrovnik

To the left, around the wall, you’ll see the pebble shoreline where the Lannisters stood on the shore and sent Myrcella off to Dorne in Season 2 episode 6.

Dubrovnik Game of Thrones Locations

It’s also where Cersei meets the boat after Jamie brings Myrcella back to King’s Landing in season 6 episode 1.

Dubrovnik Game of Thrones Tour: Filming Locations

On the Jetty straight ahead is where Sansa and Shae sit while playing a guessing game about the ships ahead in season 3 episode 1. Littlefinger approaches and talks to Sansa about getting her out of King’s Landing.

Game of Thrones Tour: Pile Bay aka Blackwater Bay Location

From Pile Bay turn right and start to walk up the steps (there are about 200..) to Fort Lovrijenac. Entrance into the fortress is free with your ticket to the city walls.

Fort Lovrijenac is the filming location of The Red Keep: the residence of the King of the Andals and the capital of the Seven Kingdoms.

When you first enter the fortress you’ll see a long corridor to your left, which you might remember from Season 2 episode 1, when Cersei and Littlefinger talk about finding Arya. He lets on that he knows about her relationship with Jamie quoting “knowledge is power.” She threatens his life stating “power is power.”

Dubrovnik Game of Thrones DIY Tour: Locations

Head upstairs to assault yourself with one of the best views of Old Town Dubrovnik. You’ll also be standing in the same spot as the filming location for King Joffrey’s Nameday Tournament in season 2 episode 1.

Fort Lovrijenac aka Game of Thrones Red Keep Location

Fort Lovrijenac Address: Ul. od Tabakarije 29, 20000, Dubrovnik, Croatia

After spending some time wandering around Fort Lovrijenac, exit the fortress and make your way back to Old Town’s Pile Gate.

Old Town Dubrovnik

There are two entrances to Old Town Dubrovnik, Pile Gate and Ploce Gate. The entrance to Pile Gate was used in season 3 episode 10 when Jamie arrives in King’s Landing to visit his sister.

Dubrovnik Game of Thrones DIY Tour: Pile Gate

As you walk through Pile Gate, you’ll be standing in a long entryway. This was where the King’s Landing riot was filmed in season 2 episode 6. After the Lannisters see Mrycella off to Dorne, they’re met with an angry crowd of townspeople. Someone throws fruit at King Joffrey and a riot ensues. The doorway at the end of the corridor (which in reality leads to a little park) is where Sansa runs to try and escape the men chasing her.

Dubrovnik Game of Thrones: King's Landing Riot at Pile Gate

Pile Gate Address: Ul. Vrata od Pila, 20000, Dubrovnik, Croatia

Continue walking through the entryway into Dubrovnik’s Old Town. The busy main street straight ahead is the Stradun, start to walk down it and turn left down Ul. Gariste. I believe it’s the second small alleyway on the right. When you hit Ul. Za Rokom, turn left, then right on Ul. od Domina. Finally make a sharp right onto Ul. od Rupa and the Ethnographic Museum will be on your right hand side.

Ethnographic Museum

The next stop on the Dubrovnik Game of Thrones tour is the Ethnographic Museum. This was used to film exterior shots of Littlefinger’s brothel. You’ll see it in season 4 episode 1 when Tyrion asks to speak to Oberyn Martell outside, and again in season 5 episode 3 when Lancel Lannister humiliates the The High Septon by making him walk naked through the street.

Dubrovnik: Ethnographic Museum aka Littlefinger's Brothel

Ethnographic Museum Address:  20000, Dubrovnik, Croatia

From the Ethnographic Museum, It’s about a 5 minute walk to the Jesuit steps. Turn around and head back down Ul. od Rupa. Make a sharp left on Ul. od Domina,  then make a   right  onto  Ul. od Puca. T urn  right  onto  Gundulićeva poljana.  The stairs are tucked back past  Gundulićeva poljana  square on Ul. uz Jezuite and they’re easy to spot.

Jesuit Staircase

The Jesuit Staircase is an important location in Season 5. We first see it in episode 1 as Cersei arrives to the funeral and walks up the steps past the mourners and into The Great Sept, making everyone wait.

Dubrovnik King's Landing Locations

They appear in episode 3 when Cersei rides up to Margaery’s wedding, and again in episode 4 when Tommen wants to see the High Sparrow but is blocked.

Dubrovnik Game of Thrones The Great Sept

Of course, the Jesuit Steps played a major role in the finale of season 5 during Cersei’s walk of atonement. During my visit, I witnessed a fan re-enacting this scene while ringing a gong whose sounds echoed through the streets..

Dubrovnik Game of Thrones: Walk of Atonement Steps

Jesuit Steps Address:  Ul. Josipa Jurja Strossmayera 2, 20000, Dubrovnik, Croatia

From the bottom of the Jesuit Staircase, head back down Ul. od Jezuite and turn right  on  Gundulićeva poljana. Walk past the Troubador Jazz Cafe and then turn right towards the Stradun. Rector’s Palace will be on your right. It’s a 2 minute walk from the steps.

Rectors Palace

Rector’s Palace receives a cameo in season 2 episode 6 as a background for the Spice King’s palace in Qarth. The Spice King and his entourage stand on the staircase as Daenerys asks the him about acquiring ships to cross the Narrow Sea.

Game of Thrones Dubrovnik: Spice King's Palace aka Rector Palace

Admission Fee: Entrance into Rector’s Palace is free with the Dubrovnik Card or admission is 100KN ($16 USD).

Rector’s Palace Address:   Ul. Pred Dvorom 3, 20000, Dubrovnik, Croatia

Leaving Rector’s Palace, turn right toward the Stradun. When you reach the small square at the end, you’ll see a large arched entryway on your right side. Go through it and follow St. Dominic Street for about 3 minutes (Don’t go out onto the port). You’ll see the staircase on your left hand side. It’s a 4-5 minute walk from Rector’s Palace.

St. Dominic Street

As Tyrion and Bronn are walking through the streets in season 2 episode 5, they witness a protest speech regarding King Joffrey. The speaker stands on top of the staircase on St. Dominic Street.

Dubrovnik Game of Thrones: St. Dominic Street

Keep following St. Dominic Street in the same direction until you reach Dubrovnik’s second gate, Ploce Gate. It’s a 1-2 minute walk.

Dubrovnik Game of Thrones: Ploce Gate

Dubrovnik’s Ploce Gate and Revelin Fortress were used as one of the entrances of The Red Keep. It’s the gate Cersei enters after her walk of shame in season 5 episode 10.

Ploce Gate also served as background in season 2 episode 5 when Tyrion talks with Lancel Lannister.

Ploce Gate: Dubrovnik Game of Thrones

From Ploce Gate head back the way you came on St. Dominic’s street and turn left onto the port. If you’re doing the tour in 1 day, it’s time to hop on a boat to Lokrum Island. If not, you can pick up here tomorrow.

PART II: Lokrum Island

Lokrum is Dubrovnik’s closest island. It takes less than 15 minutes to get to by boat. Head onto the pier and look for the Lokrum Ferry. An employee will be waiting in front of the boat selling tickets which cost 40HRK ($6.40 USD).

The ferry will drop you off at Lokrum’s port. Walk straight up the path onto the island and you’ll run into to the Lokrum Visitors Center.

Lokrum

Lokrum Visitor’s Center

Lokrum Visitor’s Center currently has a special Game of Thrones exhibit. You can watch interviews with the cast and producers about how they logistically film in Dubrovnik. Most people weren’t watching the videos, but I highly recommend sitting in on 1 or 2. They were fascinating.

The Visitor’s Center is also home to the infamous Iron Throne, which you’re free to sit on.

Game of Thrones Iron Throne in Dubrovnik

From the Visitor’s Center make your way to the Benedictine Monastery (1-2 minute walk). The gardens were difficult for me to find. It looks like you’re entering a cafe, but walk through the entryway and you’ll find yourself in Qarth.

Benedictine Monastery

Dubrovnik Game of Thrones Walking Tour

Lokrum Island has been used to film exterior scenes in the city of Qarth. You’ll most likely remember the garden party scene in season 2 episode 5, where Daenerys attends the party and meets the warlocks.

Dubrovnik's Lokrum Island aka Qarth in Game of Thrones

If you choose to spend some time on Lokrum Island before making your way back to the mainland, check out this article for a list of things to do ( Things to Do in Dubrovnik That Aren’t Old Town).  If not, head back to the ferry and get on the next boat for Dubrovnik

PART III: The City Walls

The last stop on the Dubrovnik Game of Thrones tour is the city walls! If you’re getting off the boat from Lokrum, the easiest entrance to the city walls is near the Ploce Gate entrance on St. Dominic Street. Otherwise you can go to any of the 3 entrances/exits: near Pile Gate, St. John’s Fortress (next to the Maritime Museum), or Ploce Gate.

View of King’s Landing

If entering from the Ploce Gate entrance, walk counter clockwise and head up the wall toward the west side and Minceta Tower. The entire North side of the wall gives you an amazing view of Dubrovnik (minus the CGI) which is used for many establishing shots of King’s Landing.

Minecta Tower

Minceta Tower is located on the far Northwest corner of the walls. You can’t miss it.

Minceta Tower was used as the exterior location for the House of the Undying. Daenerys travels here in season 2 episode 10 after her dragons are stolen. She circles the tower looking for an entrance as Jorah follows behind.

Practice Field

Heading counter-clockwse from Minceta Tower, you’ll start approaching the practice field, directly off the right hand side of the wall.

The practice field is where Cersei visits The Mountain and she chooses him as her champion in Tyrion’s trial during season 4 episode 7.

Game of Thrones Dubrovnik Filming Locations

In season 5 episode 4, the practice field is also where Loras is arrested by the Faith Militant.

Dubrovnik Game of Thrones Walking Tour: Filming Locations

Bokar Fortress

Continuing to walk counter-clockwise, Bokar Fortress is only a 2-3 minute walk from the practice field. It sits directly in front of Fort Lovrijenac.

Several scenes were filmed on Bokar Fortress from the city walls. In season 2 episode 8, Tyrion and Lord Varys walk around on top of the fortress while discussing war. You can see Fort Lovrijenac in the background of some shots, and the seaside wall in others.

In season 7 episode 1, Cersei and Jaime stand on Bokar Fortress and watch the Iron Fleet arrive.

If you finish the Dubrovnik Walking Tour and find yourself wanting more, check out these other filming locations which are a little less easily accessible.

 Trsteno Arboretum

25 minutes away by car is Tresteno Arboretum, a popular go-to location for the Dubrovnik Game of Thrones unit. The arboretum doubles as the Red Keep’s gardens so many scenes have been shot here. You can also see the bridge used in season 4 episode 3, when Ser Dontos helps Sansa get into a boat and escape King’s Landing.

From the gardens, head down to the beach and see where Bronn teaches Jaimie to fight with his left hand in season 4 episode 4.

How to get to Tresteno Arboretum: From the Main Bus Station in Dubrovnik, catch the local bus (12 or 15) to Tresteno. The journey lasts about 30 minutes. Check the timetable in advance as there are only about 8 buses per day.

Admission to Tresteno Garden: 45HRK ($7 USD)

Hotel Belvedere

Hotel Belvedere is an abandoned luxury hotel that was destroyed by the war in 1991. The hotel has since been re-purchased is currently undergoing a remodel but I have seen reports of people getting inside. Do so at your own risk.

Villa Sheherezade

Walk along the shoreline from Ploce Gate and you’ll find yourself at Villa Sheherezade in about 10 minutes.

The villa is an exclusive luxury rental so you won’t be allowed on the property, but you can rent it for about 7,000 euro per night. Not bad, right?

The exterior shots of Illryo’s mansion in Pentos were filmed here.

Gradac Park

From Fort Lovrijenac, Gradac park is about a 5-10 minute walk. Head West on Ul. od Tabakarije and then make a sharp left onto   Ul. don Frana Bulica

This was used at the location for King Joffrey’s wedding reception aka The Purple Wedding in season 4 episode 2.

Such beautiful places and post, I’m dreaming of visiting! I love how you included shots from the series alongside 😀 xx

elizabeth ♡ ”Ice Cream” whispers Clara (lets follow each other on bloglovin or instagram )

Thank you so much for sharing this! We followed your entire post and saved so much money by avoiding the expensive guided tours. It was great having the comparison shots and the detailed descriptions. Amazing!!!

Hey Lena, Thank you for your feedback!! I really appreciate it and I’m so happy you liked the tour 🙂

Fantastic info thank you so much!! Just back in my room for a brief siesta, a cold beer and a planning session for the evening and stumbeled onto your blog. Have seen some of these sites already but your walk gives such great direction and the photos are so helpful i’ll retrace my steps tonight! Loving every bit of Croatia and enjoying the view from my room of Fort Lovrjenac!

Hey Melody! Thank you so much for your comment and for making me jealous of your view, itinerary and beer haha. Have so much fun in Croatia!!

So much work and imagination to put all of that together. I was truly mind boggled with the cleverness of it all. You should forward to Rick Steves and show him how it’s done. Fantastic.

Hi! This is so helpful! Thank you very much for posting in a such detailed manner. We are great fans of GOT and we are going to exactly follow your recommendations!

Hi JB! This makes me so happy, I hope you love it as much as I did!

Thank you for an amazing article, this helped alot!

I’m so glad! Thanks for letting me know! Enjoy Dubrovnik 🙂

Omg this is an amazing tour. You have done an amazing job with your directions and descriptions of the scenes. The photos also bring the memories back from each episode too. One question We will be arriving on a cruise ship at 8am and leaving at 5pm. Do you think this is doable? Also catching the ferry over to lokrum island too. I feel it is, even though it looks very extensive I feel it could be done with in our time frame. What are your thoughts Please? Thank you again Dianne

Hi Dianne! I do think it’s doable but it’ll be a pretty busy day so make sure to have all everything planned out, including food stops. The city is small but the locations are spread out so you’ll be covering a lot of ground.

I was surprised at how much time walking the city walls took. When you’re on the walls, keep track of where the exits are. I think there are only 3 entrance/exit points total.. so to save time, it might be better for you to walk backward and exit near Pile Gate, rather than walking the remainder of the perimeter (after visiting the last location on the walls).

Let me know if you have any other questions and good luck!!

Thanks so much for this blog. I did stacks if it today. You’re a legend!

Thank you Liezel! Glad you found it useful 🙂

I’m going to be taking a cruise in July that will stop in Dubrovnik. Docking at 1:00 and leaving at 7:00. I know I won’t be able to get to all of these spots. Big cruise ship that will probably dock at the new port north of the old city. I can do one of the cruise excursions that is a GOT tour but I’d rather follow yours. Do you think I can get to and from the port and see Fort Lovrijenec and the walls?

Hi Lisa! Yes definitely. There is a bus station at the port which will drop you off right in front of the Old City and Fort Lovrijenac. The journey is only 5 minutes. Fort Lovrijenac is right outside of the Old City walls, so you can access both very easily.

Hi Lindsey I really want to thank you for the wonderful job you’ve done putting together this tour! My husband and I’ve been to dubrovnik on a cruise one day trip and being big GoT fans tried to find a self guided tour based on the series. Well yours was definitely the best choice! We’ve followed through all part one and two and have been amazed by every part of it! Thousand times thank you! I’ve also linked your great job to my review on trip advisor hoping it will be helpful to other Italian people getting there!

Hi Ilaria! Thank you so much for taking the time to come back and comment! I’m so glad you found the tour helpful and I really appreciate you spreading the word on Trip Advisor!

Hope you loved Dubrovnik 🙂 Lindsey

We are currently visiting Dubrovnik for 2 days from Normandy (France) and we loved your self guided tour !! The rector palace was closed for rebuilding but we found most of the stops. Thank you very much !

Hi Dalneah! Thank you so much for coming back and letting me know, I’m so happy you loved the tour.

Also thanks for the update on Rector’s Palace, I will include a note in the post for others.

Happy travels! Lindsey

Great post!! Going there next month and planning on following it step by step!

Have an amazing time in Croatia!! Thank you letting me know 🙂

Dear Lindsey, Thank you for this amazing tour guide! I spent so much time preparing for our visit to Dubrovnik, and you managed to compile the most important information here with a great choice of pictures. Wonderfully done! Million thanks!!!

Hi Vera! Thank you for taking the time to comment! Hope you enjoy the tour 🙂

Wow thank you so much for posting this article. My husband and I will be going to Croatia on a small cruise in Sept and this will help us so much. You really have done such an amazing job putting this information together. I do have one question you may know, how long is the Croatia/Dubrovnik pass valid for ? We will have to break up the tour by doing one part at the beginning of the cruise the last bit at the end, and was wondering if the pass will still be valid.

Hi Vicki! First of all, thank you so much for your kind words! Unfortunately, the Dubrovnik Card lasts for only 24 hours from the first time it’s scanned. They have a 3 day and 7 day card as well but monetarily, that might not make sense. Another suggestion would be to try and do the walls + Fort Lovrijenac on one day (using the Dubrovnik card), and then for the 2nd day you could do Lokrum and Old Town (buying tickets to Rector’s Palace a la carte).

Hope this help! Lindsey

Hey! This tour is great! Unfortunately none of the pictures are loading, are you doing maintenance on this site?

Hi Sophie, thank you SO much for letting me know. I had no idea there was an issue. I’m working on getting it fixed asap and I’ll let you know when the images are back up!

I am so glad to find this site. I am heading there tomorrow. Hopefully I can see all that I need to in 1 day. Your photo comparisons are awesome and I’m hoping to do some of my own, perhaps even with more recent scenes from the show. Thanks for this

Happy to hear it was helpful! Have fun!!

The images are back up. Thank you again for letting me know!

Hi Lindsey,

Thank-you so much for your wonderful blog. It is exactly what I was looking for! I am visiting in a couple of weeks and will definitely be using this. I am going with a 16 year old and a 5 year old. I was thinking of doing part 1 and part 3 on the same day to ensure that I don’t let the 1 day card run out and then have a more relaxed day on the second day and visit Lokrum. Do you think this would work? Do you think that I am being a bit ambitious with a 5 year old in tow! Thanks for your help!

Hi Liz! It’s definitely possible to do part 1 and 3 in the same day. That’s how I did it when I was putting together the tour! I don’t have kids so I’m not sure what it’s like to travel with a 5 year old but I imagine it might be a lot of ground to cover with a little one. I remember it taking a lot longer walk the perimeter of the walls than I had imagined, so a short attention span might get a little tired after awhile. With that said, you can always download the Google map with the points of interest and cut out certain stops if it gets to be too much. Hope this helps! Good luck!

This was such a great guide, we went to Dubrovnik earlier last month and we intended to do a select few of the shots, thanks to you it was so easy to identify where they were!

Hi Jamie, Amazing! Thank you so much for coming back to let me know!

This was awesome…i could find everything… except for the Lokrum part as the island is closed in the winters… however i found a game of thrones merchandise shop where they had the iron throne and a big sword….u have to buy a souvenir to sit on the throne and take photos ….special for the Google map pins

Oh good to know! Thanks for the update 🙂

Thank you so much for all of this information!!! I’m planning my trip and was a little anxious about getting on those guided tours with a lot of people and not getting the complete information with it. But you, your photos and details saved me!! Thank you so much!

Hi Josi, I’m so glad you found this helpful! I hope you love Dubrovnik 🙂 Have a great trip!

Great post, definitely going to do this as opposed to a paid tour. How long would you reccomend it takes to do the full thing?

I feel like I could get it done in one day (getting a bus in from Split early morning). Do you have any reccomendations for food as we go round please? And for anything else to do in Dubrovnik whilst we are there?

Thank you very much, Ciaran

Hi Ciaran, There’s a cool restaurant called Panorama Restaurant that you can take the cable car to. The views are incredible and the food was good. As far as the tour goes, we split it up into a few days but if you want to do the whole thing, including Lokrum island, it will be a full day. Here’s a link to a handful of posts I did about Dubrovnik, with more recommendations for what to do. Have fun!

https://hellojetlag.com/category/europe/croatia/

Hi Just back from Dubrovnik. Great time and your guide very helpful. Update cable car rides suspended indefinitely as result of breaches of safety operating procedures by the operator.

Hi James! Wow, that’s a bummer. Thanks so much for the update, I will add a disclaimer to my posts.

I just love you so much right now lol ;P

I was just searching for the perfect GOT tour on Viator, Get your Guide, etc and I found this pearl. Loved not only the step by step from every scene, but also the suggestion of getting the Dubrovnik Card. Thank you so much, I am totally doing it by myself now (I’m traveling in Sep with my husband)

haha yesss! So glad to be able to help. I hope you love Dubrovnik 🙂

Hi We are coming in May and want to do the GOT tour but we will only have the morning. We are keen to see the throne and sit in it Can you please advise which tour we should take? Thank you

I would recommend either Fort Lovrijenac and/or the sites within the Old Town Walls (purple and teal on my tour) to see the most in a short period of time.

The throne is on Lokrum Island so it does take up time getting there and back. There is a replica throne at the Dubrovnik City Shop souvenir store. I believe it’s plastic but if you look up pictures, you can’t really tell so it could possibly suffice.

Have fun! Lindsey

Hi. Thank you so much for posting the information about seeing the places where Game of Thrones were filmed. We are so excited. We are coming in on a cruise for a day. Do you have suggestions on how to get to the port to where we can start your walking tour? What is the best way? Taxi? Do you know how far it is from the port? I read somewhere you had to pay to get into the “inner city walls” is that true and will we need to do that? Thank you so much! We are going in September and trying to plan ahead. Hoping we can do this on our own and not have to pay for the expensive tour that the cruise ship offers. Thank you!! Any suggestions you may have would be wonderful!

Hi Nicolette, The port is 3km (1.8 miles) away. I stayed outside of Old Town and the bus that took me to there always made a stop in front of the cruise ships, so check info on the local bus lines. I believe it was line 1. Taxis and Uber are also available in Dubrovnik. Yes, it costs money to walk the walls. I have info within this post about it but I would double check recent prices as they might’ve been raised. I believe it is 200kn per person in 2021. Have fun!

Hi. I just sent a comment. Was also wondering if there was a way to contact some of the people that have done your walking tour to see if they had recommendations. Thanks

We completed your self guided tour. Want to say thank you for taking the time to put together such great map. Highly recommend to any GOT Fan.

Thank you so much for letting me know!!

Dubrovnik old town.

Dubrovnik dubbed the “Pearl of the Adriatic” is located on the Dalmatian Coast with a population of over 42,000. It’s historic significance in the Adriatic, combined with the number of well preserved medieval buildings has made Dubrovnik the perfect site for Game of Thrones film location. The Old Town of Dubrovnik is a medieval walled city that joined the UNESCO World Heritage Site list in 1979. While it suffered significant damage during the War of Independence in 1991,the repair and restoration work has made this a popular tourist destination.

Dubrovnik Game of Thrones Map

The map and guide above includes both the Dubrovnik Game of Thrones film locations and the Dubrovnik Old Town attractions in an easy to follow tour. There is no need to do two separate walking tours. Follow the Dubrovnik Game of Thrones Trail below for a self guided walking tour and skip any Dubrovnik Game of Thrones film locations or any Old Town Dubrovnik attractions as needed. The map and guide are flexible so you can plan your day.

Using the Dubrovnik Self Guided Walking Tour

Visit the major attractions by following the walking map which has several walking routes in Dubrovnik. Each route is depicted by a different color and lists the attractions on that specific route. The walking routes can be done separately on different days or you can do them all in one day. Attractions in black on the map are outside the Old Town including Lokrum Island and the Cable Car. The beaches are shown as black stars on the map. The attractions associated with Game of Thrones Dubrovnik are indicated as “Game of Thrones Tour” below so you can easily follow the tour.

Download the PDF or Interactive Map. Click on the map pins, if it is a Dubrovnik Game of Thrones film locations. I have added the Game of Thrones Dubrovnik images or video depicting the scene that took place at that location plus a summary with additional information on the attraction and the game of Thrones Scene. If it is not a Dubrovnik Game of Thrones film location, I have included additional information plus images of the Dubrovnik Old Town attraction.

Old Town Dubrovnik Wall System: “ Walki ng the Walls “

The map includes the opportunity to walk on top of the fortified walls. If you decide to purchase tickets and walk on the walls which is highly recommended, the walls will take about two hours to complete the circuit. Tickets and entrance for the walls are located at Pile Gate and Ploce Gate entrance (refer to entrance A and B below for additional information). Depending on how long you are in Dubrovnik, you can spend anywhere from 1 day to 3 days completing the self-guided tours including walking the walls. Sign up for the Dubrovnik City Walls Sunset Tour.

Entrance to Dubrovnik Old Town

There are several entrances:.

  • Pile Gate – Western Entrance; as you enter there is a tourist office on the left where tickets for attractions can be purchased, and a staircase that takes you to the top of the walls.  The stairs to access the wall walk, is narrow and without railing so it may be difficult for people with mobility issues and strollers to navigate. There are discounts for multi-ticket attractions or if you are visiting several attractions check the Dubrovnik card.  Toilets are available for €1.
  • Ploče  Gate – Eastern Entrance; there is a tourist office just as you enter the gates with access via stairs to the wall walk. It is setup the same way as the Pile Gate office.
  • Buza Gate – Northern Entrance; leading in from Iza Grada street, it is associated with a parking lot and mostly used by those who travel by car and need to park outside of the old town. This is the least accessible route into old town due to the number of steps on the route.
  • Old Port – Southern entrance from the Adriatic Sea.  Cruise ships dock here and access the Old town from the southern entrance. When the cruise ship docks, Old Town Dubrovnik fills with tourists and there are long lines to many attractions. Check the schedule with the cruise post and plan accordingly.

Dubrovnik Game of Thrones attractions guide below. It is easy to download and follow the directions, or you can input the destinations into your own phone and follow the prompts.  Most attractions are within five minutes of each other. Don’t worry if you get lost as Dubrovnik Old Town is small and you are always only minutes from the main street Stradun.

Dubrovnik Old Town is car-free. Its main access and vehicle drop off point is the Pile Gate. This is the drop off point for tour buses and city buses, including the public airport bus. Also located outside the Pile Gate is a square, a number of cafes, a very handy ATM that we used quite often, and the Dubrovnik Tourist office. Behind the tourist office/Main Square is access to West Harbour and Fort Lovrijenac, refer to map.

Follow the Dubrovnik Game of Thrones Map using Wifi, Croatia SIM Card

We brought an old smart phone and purchased a tourist SIM card from one of the three major providers; Hrvatski Telekom, Vipnet and Tele2.  They each have a tourist rate. We used the internet whenever needed to get to attractions. It is not really necessary as you can download the maps and use offline, however we found the local SIM card very helpful .

  • Hrvatski Telecom (www.hrvatskitelekom.hr/visiting-croatia);
  • Tele mach (www.telemach.hr/for-tourists)

Blue walking Route on Game of Thrones Dubrovnik Map

We start the Self guided tour by following the blue color route on the map.  Images of the attractions are on the interactive map and also on the PDF map . You will neeed to click on the map pins to see the images. Follow this route for the attractions below:

1. West Harbour (Game of Thrones Map: Blackwater Bay)

Game of thrones film locations:.

  • Season 2 in GoT this was where the Gold Cloaks where ordered to murder all the bastard children of King Robert and you see them entering the doors (homes) in the cliff side
  • Season 3, Episode 1, where Sansa and Shae sit on the jetty while playing a guessing game and where Littlefinger talks to Sansa about getting her out of Kings Landing

Game of Thrones Film Locations: Images of relevant Game of Thrones Scenes are on the Interactive map or PDF map above, click on the map pins

2. fort lovrijenac (game of thrones map: red keep).

The Fortress was built 37 meters high on sheer rock and was designed to protect the city from invaders from the west and from sea attacks. It is triangular in shape and follows the contours of the cliff.  The Seaside wall is about 12m thick protecting it from enemy fire. The longest wall faces Bokar Fort and protects the small harbor, Kolorina.

Interestingly enough, the walls facing the city are only 2 feet thick at the bottom thus allowing for a breach in the event that the Fort Lovrijenac commander planned a rebellion. This area could easily be breached and allow for the retake of the fortress. On that same theme, the Commander of the fortress who was changed every month was from the local nobility.

Almost immediately after it was built, the fortress was successful in defending the city from the Venetian invading army that arrived by sea, its no wonder it was used as a Dubrovnik Game of Thrones film location.

The views are spectacular and the fort is remarkably well preserved. It is even rented out for events such as weddings. The climb from the western harbor is steep and the stone staircase has no railings so be careful. It is the only way to get up and down.

Fort Bokar ( Game of Thrones film location: item 9 below ):

  • From Fort Lovrijenac, you can see Fort Bokar to the east. It is part of Dubrovnik fortified wall system and accessible if you climb the Dubrovnik city walls .

Gradec Park ( Game of Thrones film location: item 28 below ):

  • From Fort Lovrijenac, looking west from the top of Fort Lovrijenac, Gradec Park is visible in the distance. The park was featured in several scenes.

Fort Lovrijenac was used as the location of Red Keep Castle in Kings Landing, and the home of the Iron Throne and the rulers of Kings Landing.

  • Season 2, Episode 1, Cersei and Littlefinger’s conversation where he say ‘Knowledge is Power’ and she replies ‘Power is Power’ takes place in the long corridor as you enter the fortress
  • Season 2, Episode 1, head upstairs to stand at the same spot as King Joffrey during the Nameday Tournament
  • Season 3, Episode 1, When Bronn tells Tyrion he should be paid double due to his recent knighthood
  • Season 3, Episode 5, Where Cersei asks Littlefinger for help in removing the Tyrells from King’s Landing

Brown Walking Route on Game of Thrones Dubrovnik Map

3. kolorina / pile harbour (game of thrones map: kings landing harbour).

Kolorina is a small fishing harbor and the oldest port located between the Bokar Fortress on the left and Fort Lovrijenac on the right. There are two beach bars just above the steps. It is a great spot for kayaking and is not recommended for swimming due to the contaminants found in the water. Check the latest status before diving in.

Alternatively, you may want to book a guided tour of the harbor as a sunset dinner cruise or book a private sailing tour of the Islands, or perhaps book a kayaking guided tour to the Islands around the Old Town

  • Season 2, Episode 6, it is also the location where Lannister says goodbye to Princess Myrcella
  • Season 6, Episode 1, the scene where Cersei waits for Myrcella’s return

Purple Walking Route on Game of Thrones Map

4. pile gate (game of thrones tour: entrance to kings landing).

Pile Gate is a derivative of the Greek word pilai, meaning door. It is the western entrance to the Old City. It was and still is the main entrance to the Old town. In ancient times, a wooden draw bridge was used to access the old town when the old town was surrounded by a moat. The wooden bridge was pulled up every night using a winch and weight system still visible on the side of the gate. Once the gate was pulled up, it was locked and the key was given to the Rector.

The city was tightly shut for the night with its fortified walls and the statue of St Blaise, the city’s patron saint, set in a niche above the arch of the gate protecting its citizens. Today the moat has been replaced with a small garden, easily accessible from stairs leading to below the bridge. The wooded bridge was replaced by a concrete one. The walk between the outer gate and inner gate was used for a variety of scenes in the Game of Thrones (GoT). These specific scenes are shown on the images in the walking map above.

Places to Stay in Old Town Dubrovnik (near the action: Pile Gate)

When we travel, we always stay in a central location and walking distance to a majority of the attractions. In this case, Pile gate was the hub of the tourist spot. We stayed just outside of Pile Gate as we had a rental car and Old Town Dubrovnik is car free. Here are some recommended hotels, apartments and guesthouses with varying price points in and around Old Town Dubrovnik (including beachfront), Check pricing and availability Here .

Walking Route

After walking through the outer gate, there will be a ramp and a set of stairs taking you to the inner gate which dates back to 1460 AD.  Walking through the inner gate will take you into the Old Town, and the main street Stradun which is directly in front of you as you enter the Old Town.

The new monastery was built within the city walls in the same year, 1317 AD. The Franciscan monks took care of the sick and opened what became a public pharmacy to meet the needs of the monks and the citizens. This ancient pharmacy is a museum with interesting exhibits and it continues to function as a working pharmacy.

  • Minceta Towers located on the northwest corner
  • Fort Bokar which is located on the southwest corner
  • Revelin Fortress on the northeast corner, located outside of Ploce gate
  • St. Johns Fortress / Sveti Ivan Tower (Mulo Tower) at the northwest corner

The construction started in the 14 th century and were expanded upon until the 17 th century. They were never breached and are considered to be the most successful fortification system of the middle ages. Even earthquake of 1667 did not destroy the walls. They are on the UNESCO list of World Heritage Site.

It takes about 2 plus hours to complete a tour of the defensive walls that consist of 14 quadrangular towers, 3 circular towers, 5 bastions and the St. Johns Fortress (Mulo Towers).  You can book a guided tour of the Dubrovnik Walls Here . It is the highest point in Dubrovnik with amazing view of the town and the Adriatic Sea. 11. strandun.

Stradun is 300m long and is Dubrovnik Old Town’s Main Street. It is lined with café’s, shops, historic buildings and when the cruise ship docks, it is jam packed with tourists. The location of public festivals and events, it divides Old Town into northern and southern sections and is the shortest route from the western pile gate to the eastern Ploče   gate.

Stradun was a shallow channel that divided two neighboring settlements who were trading partners. The channel was filled with dirt and became the road that connected the two settlements. Eventually these two settlements merged into one and in the 12 century a single wall was built fortifying and protecting the entire settlement.

13. jesuit staircase (game of thrones map: start of “walk of shame”).

The stairs were designed by Pietro Passalacque who fashioned them after the Piazza di Spagna in Rome. The foot of the stairs is the location of the Old town Market in the Gundulic Square. The stairs are lined with cafes and shops and the top of the stairs is the St Ignatius Church and two Dubrovnik colleges; Jesuit College and Collegium Ragusinum.

  • Season 5, Episode 4, When Tommen wants to see the high Sparrow and his path is blocked on the stairs
  • Season 5, Episode 10, this is where Cersie begins her atonement in the form of a “Walk of Shame”. It starts at the top of the stairs, she walks towards Od Margarit Street, St. Dominik Street and ends at the Ploce Gate. The streets are lined with jeering citizens who also follow her along the walk

The café’s and shops along the staircase were shut down and hundreds of extras were brought in as townspeople. It was one of the most expensive scenes shot as all the owners of the cafes and shops had to be paid their full days wages for the days the scene was shot. They even paid the residents for NOT looking out the window when the scenes were shot!

14. St Ignatius Church

The baroque style church completed in 1725, was financed by the Gundulic family and is located at the top of the Jesuit staircase. It has a magnificent interior with baroque frescoes depicting the life of St. Ignatius de Loyola and painted by Gaetano Garcis. The church also houses the oldest bell in Dubrovnik dated from 1355.  We went to a service in the church which was in Croatian but services in english are also held.

Once you have finished looking around this area, head back down the stairs.

From the Rectors Palace, head to the eastern end of the Stradun where the Sponza Palace, Orlando Column and Bell Tower are located. It is about a 5 minute walk.

17. Sponza Palace

It was built between 1422 and 1516 and had a variety of functions over the years including a customs office, an armory, a treasury, a bonded warehouse, a mint, a bank and a school. The atrium, at one point, served as the trading and business center and the inscription on the arch attest to its role ie:

Fallere nostra vetant et falli pondera. Meque pondero cum merces ponderat ipse deus. “Our weights do not permit cheating. When I measure goods, God measures with me.”

It was one of the only buildings not damaged in the 1667 earthquake and is well preserved. Today it is used as a museum and an events venue. The acoustics of the atrium make this a venue for Dubrovnik’s music recitals. It is also home to the city’s archives, storing over 100,000 documents, the earliest of which is dated 1022.

18. Orlando’s Column

Located in front of the Sponza Palace and St Blaise Church and in the center of Luža Square, it was erected in 1418. It is carved in the form of a knight and the knight’s forearm was used as a system of measure which was 51.2cm. There is a legend that the Knight Orlando, for whom the statue is named, protected the city from invaders. This has not been verified but it is a very popular legend. The column has a small platform at the top of the column that was used to make public proclamations. Public punishments were carried out at the column.

19. Bell and Clock Tower

The City Bell and Clock Tower were built in 1444 and are aligned in the center to Stradun Street. The bell tower is 31 meters high. The two figures striking the bell are named “Maro” and Baro”. The salty sea air has turned the bronze figures green over the years and they were given the name “Zelenici” which means green men or “greens”. The original “greens” were removed due to damage and are in the Museum at the Rectors palace. What you see is a true cast of the originals.

20. old port.

The Old port had two very important features which were two breakwaters, the Porporela in front of Fort St John and Kase breakwater which was perpendicular to the port.  The port was also protected by three separate forts: Fort St John, Fort Revelin and St Luke Fort. The port has a building with three symmetrical arches and this is the old Arsenal where Dubrovnik’s ships were built. Legend has it that when a ship was being built, the entrance was bricked up so the enemies could not spy and would not be aware of a new ship being built. When the ship was completed the brick wall was demolished and the ship was lowered into the harbor. Dubrovnik had a great reputation for building strong, durable and simply designed ships.

Today the Arsenal has been converted into a thematic restaurant. In keeping with its history, tables and chairs are made of carved wood and you will notice skeletons, ropes and pulleys representing an ancient shipyard.

Established by the Dominicans in 1225, it was completed in the 14 th century and became part of the wall defense system.  In the 15 th century, the vestry, capital hall and cloisters were added thereby completing the monastery complex. The cloister and its associated porches, and arches are of elegant transitional gothic-renaissance style surrounding a peaceful inner courtyard. The sarcophagus of the bishop of Ston is in the backroom while the grave of a prominent Dubrovnik family including poets Dinko Ranjina and Junije are buried in the Monastery.  The museum has an impressive art collection, jewelry collection, various artifacts and manuscripts. It is another easily recognizable landmark due to the semi-circular steps that lead into the monastery. During the summer festival the site is used as a venue for concerts and other events.

What is Dubrovnik Famous For? 11 Things to Know

Wondering what is dubrovnik famous for here are the top 11 things.

Dubrovnik is popular destination along Croatia’s Dalmatian coast. It is known as The Pearl of the Adriatic due to its beautiful old town and breathtaking coastline along the Adriatic Sea.

After visiting Dubrovnik, I can understand why it is such a famous place! The city became known internationally by being the filming location of King’s Landing in the popular Game of Thrones series. However, Dubrovnik is famous for much more than Game of Thrones- from its incredible medieval city walls to its stunning old town.

Dubrovnik’s well-preserved Old Town

Breathtaking coastline & beautiful beaches

The historic Dubrovnik Walls

Its nickname: The Pearl of the Adriatic

Top 11 Things Dubrovnik is Known For

Dubrovnik is famous for many reasons, which make it a city worth visiting . However, it is most well-known for the following 11 things.

1. Dubrovnik’s Well-Preserved Old Town

Dubrovnik is famous for its incredibly well-preserved old town, which is now a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The old town is surrounded by medieval walls that were first built in the 11th-13th century.

The inside of the old town is a pedestrian only area with no cars. In the old town, you will find limestone streets and baroque-style architecture with beautiful red terracotta rooftops.

The most famous street in Dubrovnik is Stradun, which is the main street in the old town and is scattered with restaurants, bars, shops, and historic sites.

From Stradun, you will find a series of smaller, winding streets that add to the charm of old town.

One of the best ways to experience the old town is by taking this Dubrovnik Walking Tour.

2. Game of Thrones Filming Locations

Dubrovnik is famous for being the filming location of King’s Landing, which was the capital city of the popular HBO series Game of Thrones.

Some of the most famous Game of Thrones sites in Dubrovnik include the following:

Lovrijenac Fort – Filming site for the Red Keep of King’s Landing

Dubrovnik West Pier – Filming location of Blackwater Bay

Jesuit Staircase by Saint Ignatius Church – Filming site of Cersei’s walk of shame

Of course, there are many more filming sites for Game of Thrones in Dubrovnik.

So, if you are a big Game of Thrones fan like I am, then I highly recommend taking a Game of Thrones Walking Tour which will show you all the sites and make you feel like you have been transported into King’s Landing.

3. Dubrovnik is Known as The Pearl of the Adriatic

Dubrovnik is popularly known as The Pearl of the Adriatic for its scenic coastline and for its beautiful mix of Gothic, Renaissance and Baroque architecture.

The nickname The Pearl of the Adriatic was first used by the English poet Lord Byron in the early 1800’s. The nickname has been around ever since, and Dubrovnik is considered by many to be Croatia’s crown jewel along the coast.

4. Dubrovnik is Famous for its Medieval Walls

Of course, another thing Dubrovnik is known for is its impressive city walls that surround the medieval old town.

The walls were first built in the 13th century, and today they stand up to 25m (82 ft) high and have a length of 1,940m (6,360 ft).

There are also 3 medieval gates around the walls that serve as entrances to the old town. These are known as the Pile Gate, Ploče Gate, and Buza Gate.

The Dubrovnik Walls are one of the most popular attractions in all of Croatia, as you can walk around the top of the walls. Along the way, you will experience breathtaking views of the city and the coastline.

One of the best times to experience the Dubrovnik walls is at sunset. You can even take this Dubrovnik Walls Sunset Walking Tour.

5. Dubrovnik Cable Car

Dubrovnik is located at the bottom of Mount Srd, and the city is known for it’s cable car that will take you to the top of the mountain. At the top, you’ll discover incredible panoramic views of Dubrovnik’s old town and the Adratic Sea.

The most famous restaurant in Dubrovnik is Panorama , which is perched atop Mount Srd with absolutely stunning views. You can reach the Panorama restaurant by taking the cable car, and it is one of the most popular things to do in Dubrovnik.

Even if you don’t want to eat at Panorama, it is still an incredible experience to take the Dubrovnik Cable Car to the top of Mount Srd.

6. Dalmatian Wine & Food

Dalmatia is well known for its wine, specifically the Plavac Mali wines which are from a red grape grown across the Dalmatian coast.

There are several wine bars in the old town of Dubrovnik, as well as wineries in the nearby region.

To fully experience Dubrovnik’s wine culture, I definitely recommend taking one of these Dubrovnik Wine Tours .

Dubrovnik is also known for its delicious cuisine, which consists heavily of seafood due to its location along the coast.

Below are some of the famous foods to try in Dubrovnik:

Black Risotto – a seafood dish

Dalmatinska Pašticada – a traditional dish from Dubrovnik

Rožata – a desert similar to crème brûlée

Rakija – Croatian brandy made with fruits

7. Breathtaking Dalmatian Coastline

Dubrovnik is located in the southernmost part of Croatia, which is the region of Dalmatia. In this region, you’ll find a dramatic, rocky coastline that is perched along the beautiful blue waters of the Adriatic Sea.

The city of Dubrovnik is known for being along this breathtaking Dalmatian Coastline, which adds to the incredible natural beauty of the area.

8. Beautiful Beaches

Dubrovnik is known for being home to some incredible beaches, as well as the surrounding Elaphiti Islands.

While most of Dubrovnik’s beaches have pebbles instead of sand, they are still extremely beautiful. The azure waters of the Adriatic Sea make the beaches of Dubrovnik some of the most beautiful that I have seen in Europe.

Below are some of the most popular beaches near Dubrovnik:

Banje Beach – Most popular beach with postcard views of old town

Danče Beach – Local hotspot

Beach Sunj – Sandy Beach on Lopud Island

Sveti Jakov Beach – One of the most beautiful beaches

To explore the beaches of the Elaphiti Islands (such as Beach Sunj) you can take a full-day tour , half-day boat trip , or even a private boat cruise .

Book a Boat Tour of the Elaphiti Islands

9. Lokrum Island

Lokrum Island is a small island located off the shores of Dubrovnik. The island is a popular day trip and there are several ferries that run between Lokrum Island and Dubrovnik’s port each day.

Lokrum is known for its pine forested area, which is protected by UNESCO. You can also see colorful peacocks wander around the island, which is a unique aspect.

Some of the best things to do on Lokrum include visiting the Benedictine monastery, wandering around the botanical gardens, or going for a swim in the Adriatic Sea.

10. Most Expensive City in Croatia

While Dubrovnik is one of the most beautiful cities in Croatia, it is also known for being the most expensive city in the country.

Dubrovnik is more expensive than other Croatian cities due to its popularity as an international tourist destination, especially in the summertime.

While Dubrovnik is more expensive than places such as Zagreb or even Split, it is still more affordable than many other European destinations.

In my experience of visiting Dubrovnik, I found prices for meals, drinks, and accommodation to be similar to the US or much of Western Europe. I did feel that tours and activities were slightly less expensive than in other parts of Europe.

Insider Tip: To save money when visiting, check out the Dubrovnik City Pass which includes access to the City Walls and many other historical sites.

11. Dubrovnik is Famous for it’s History

Last but certainly not least, Dubrovnik is known for its history. The small port city has a fascinating history, and eventually became a powerful maritime republic that rivaled the Republic of Venice.

The city dates back to the 7th century AD and was once ruled by the Byzantine Empire, and was later under the sovereignty of the Venetian Empire.

However, the most important period in Dubrovnik’s history began in 1358 when it gained independence from Venice through the Treaty of Zadar and became the Republic of Ragusa (also called the Republic of Dubrovnik).

The Republic became a powerful maritime state, known for its wealth and commercial trading. The city even survived a massive earthquake in 1667 that wrecked havoc upon the old town.

The Republic of Dubrovnik acted independently until 1808, when Napoleon’s army occupied the city.
