Welcome to London!
âWhen you are tired of London, you are tired of lifeâ the old saying goes. From the home of the British Royal Family to the packed pubs; from the heart of British politics, to the theatrical West End; from invading Romans to conquering Kings, London has it all.
Starting as a marshland with just a handful of celtic tribes, and soon subject to Roman conquest as âLondiniumâ in 47 AD, London had a slow and unimpressive start. However, by the time of the 11th Century, the city grew as the epicentre of English royalty, throwing in several centuries of war with France, for good measure. Through sabotage, murder, and revolutions, the heads that wore the crown constantly shifted, from titanic sovereigns like Henry VIII and Elizabeth I in the 16th Century, through civil war and the âmerry monarchâ Charles II in the 17th, to the Germanic Georges and regency in the 18th. London itself would grow as the centre of the British Empire – and arguably – the centre of the modern world, reaping the benefits of the Industrial Revolution and using the Empireâs immense imperial power to its advantage, with all the trade, violence, and suffering that came with it. With one hand dominating the globe, and the other making the most of its great wealth, the city evoked awe and wonder, developing into a hub of world-leading science, innovation, and arts. It is here that Charles Darwin would write On the Origin of Species, JMW Turner would redefine painting, and Charles Dickens would birth the modern novel, pain-stakingly putting the conditions of real Londoners to the page. After the brutal Great War of 1914-1918, Britain -and London itself- became tired and over-extended, plunging into rapid political and social changes. Just 20 years later, it would be pulled into another horrifying war, for a time fighting as the lonely bastion against the Nazi regime in Europe, as the Luftwaffe flew above wreaking havoc. By 1945, a new world emerged. With a huge labour shortage and a post-war vision to assemble, parliament turned to the commonwealth to build a modern Britain: it passed the British Nationality Act. Now, those who had previously been under the British yoke as subjects came to London as citizens. This change re-invigorated the city, setting it onto a new path. Soon London was the cultural place-to-be. Its bars were swinging with jazz and rockânâroll, its galleries filled with contemporary art, and its theatres hosted the great plays and musicals of the century. To this day London inspires with its music and theatre scene, museums, and fashion.
Join us on our Welcome to London tour to hear and experience this astounding story yourself, and see the city as itâs meant to be seen. Starting in Westminster, weâll take you to the most iconic and beautiful sites in London. Weâll talk about why Big Ben isnât called Big Ben, see the Abbey that has witnessed over a 1,000 years of royal coronations, walk through the royal parks of Buckingham Palace, discuss great military battles both old and new, and get under the skin of modern London at Covent Garden. We might even end near a pub, in true London fashion. From Winston Churchill to the Suffragettes to Queen Elizabeth II to James Bond, London has a fantastic story to tell. And no worries – weâll fuse history with tips and recommendations, and set you up for your London experience – so join us and get the perfect introduction to one of the greatest cities in the world!
Some of the sites we will see on this 2 hours 45 minutes tour include:
- Big Ben and Westminster Abbey
- The Houses of Parliament
- Buckingham Palace and St. Jamesâ Park
- Trafalgar Square
- Pubs and Theatreland
- Covent Garden
- …and much, much more!

Wikileaks founder Julian Assange has been released from prison in the UK as part of a plea deal with the US government .
The 52-year-old â who came to the international spotlight in 2010 after publishing a series of leaks  from US Army intelligence analyst Chelsea Manning â was today freed from the high security Belmarsh jail in London .
For years, the US has argued that the hundreds of thousands of classified military documents â which disclosed information about the Iraq and Afghanistan wars â endangered lives.
The activist was charged with conspiracy to obtain and disclose national defence information amid what has been the largest security breach of its kind in the US military history.
Footage of Assange published on X in the early hours of this morning shows his departure from Belmarsh where he had been locked away for the past five years.
He is headed towards Stansted Airport where he boarded a private charter plane understood to have cost him $500,000.
It is understood that the Australian national has agreed to plead guilty to a single criminal charge of conspiring to obtain and disclose classified US national defence documents.
In return, Assange will walk free and return to his country after years in self-exile.
This is expected to take place in a court in the Northern Mariana Islands tomorrow morning.
Wikileaks confirmed the reports in a statement on X: âJulian Assange is free. He left Belmarsh maximum security prison on the morning of June 24, after having spent 1901 days there.
âHe was granted bail by the High Court in London and was released at Stansted airport during the afternoon, where he boarded a plane and departed the UK.

âThis is the result of a global campaign that spanned grass-roots organisers, press freedom campaigners, legislators and leaders from across the political spectrum, all the way to the United Nations.â
It is a moment his supporters have been waiting for after 14 years of legal battles, campaigns and diplomatic tensions for him and his family.
Despite generous public support, Assangeâs path to freedom has been paved by allegations of rape in Sweden and conspiracy theories about Russian interference.
Who is Julian Assange and what is Wikileaks?
Assange is an Australian editor, publisher and activist who founded Wikileaks in 2006.
He became interested in computers and mathematics at a young age and by the early 90s he was considered one of his nationâs best hackers.

His website rose to prominence in April 2010 when it published a classified video showing a 2007 US helicopter attack that killed a dozen people in the Iraqi capital, Baghdad.
Wikileaks then dumped more than 90,000 classified US military documents on the war in Afghanistan, and about 400,000 secret US files on the Iraq war.
It also leaked 250,000 secret diplomatic cables from US embassies that made it to the front pages of newspapers.
The group returned to the spotlight ahead of the 2016 US presidential election when it published tens of thousands of emails belonging to Democratic presidential candidate Hillary Clintonâs campaign chairperson.
Arrest of Assange and legal battle
A Swedish court ordered Assangeâs detention in November 2010 as a result of an investigation into allegations of sex crimes made by two female Swedish Wikileaks volunteers.
He was arrested by British police in December 2010 on a European Arrest Warrant (EAW) issued by Sweden.
The activist denied all allegations, claiming that it was a pretext to extradite him to the US to face charges over the leaks.

In June 2012, Assange sought political asylum in the Ecuadorean Embassy where he then spent seven years in hiding.
Swedish prosecutors dropped their investigation in 2017 but British police said he would still be arrested if he left the embassy over his failure to surrender to bail.
It was two years later that Ecuador revoked his asylum and he was carried out of the building before being thrown into jail.

Taylor Swiftâs Favorite Kebab Shop Owner Declines Her VIP Ticket Offer For London âEras Tourâ Show
It’s the hottest ticket in the world right now but one man has refused a VIP pass to Taylor Swift ’s Eras Tour .
According to The Sun , North London kebab shop owner, Ahmed Khan , has turned down the 34-year-old singer’s offer to attend the tour’s London leg for free.
The outlet reported that Khan, who owns a kebab shop called Kentish Delight, “was forced to turn down the offer because he was understaffed.”
Kentish Delight became one of the most famous kebab shops in the world after Swift filmed scenes from 2017’s “End Game” music video inside the takeaway venue.

Khan said, “She [Swift] first came in before the pandemic with Joe [ Alwyn ]. He knew we had the best kebabs so wanted to show Taylor. It did not feel like she was a big celebrity. She was very down to earth and spoke to everyone with respect.”
The store owner detailed how Swift’s management team reached out to him with tickets to one of her London concerts at Wembley Stadium.
The report also claimed that Swift’s team “ordered 45 kebabs” from Khan on Friday, June 21, and “were expected to do the same for the weekend gigs.”
Khan has created a “Taylor Swift” kebab in honor of the singer’s so-called favorite order — a chicken doner in pitta with salad and garlic sauce.

The news comes after a catering vendor who works at Wembley Stadium revealed Swift planned the food that’s on sale during her Eras Tour .
During the London leg’s eight-night run, Swift fans are being treated to a selection of “her favorite British-inspired foods,” according to Delaware North , a staff member.
“We know that Taylor Swift fans are expecting a once-in-a-lifetime experience at Wembley Stadium, and we are proud to enhance this through food and beverage,” Wembley Head of Concessions, Lewis Blake , told Us Weekly in a statement. “Our team has spent a long time researching all things Taylor Swift – and have tapped into the Swifties on our team – to create a food and beverage program that celebrates Taylor and gives her fans an opportunity to ‘taste’ The Eras Tour while they also see and hear it.“

Swift’s menu wasn’t the only ode to her beloved Chiefs Kingdom.
The singer had her boyfriend, Travis Kelce , join her on stage during her Sunday, June 23 concert at the end of her Tortured Poets Department portion.
Kelce, 34, joined Swift’s dancers, Kam Saunders and Jan Ravnik , in a morning suit and top hat as he pretended to apply blush to Swift’s cheeks before dabbing invisible makeup on himself.

UK fans wonder if Taylor Swift will say 'So long, London' after Eras Tour
June 22, 2024 at 4:00 p.m.
by LISA LEFF / Associated Press
LONDON (AP) â Taylor Swift fans enjoy parsing the singer-songwriter's lyrics for references to her romantic life and insights into her state of mind.
But the pop superstar's fans in the U.K. didn't have to listen closely to her latest album, "The Tortured Poets Department," to get the sense that Swift had soured on the country's capital city after long making it a regular hangout and then her second home. The record's fifth track is titled "So Long, London."
As Swift brings her blockbuster Eras Tour to London's Wembley Stadium, some Swifties therefore are wondering if they are witnessing the beginning of an extended goodbye. She is performing three nights starting Friday, and is scheduled to return to Wembley for five nights in August to close the tour's European leg.
The area around Wembley was transformed for the shows, with fans posing in front of a giant mural of the singer and traveling stairs christened "Swiftie Steps." Swift announced that 88,446 people were in attendance at Friday's show in what she called "the most exhilarating city in the world."
Swift gave fans a wink and a nod toward her London life during one of her two solo acoustic surprise songs: a piano medley that opened with the London-set "The Black Dog" and segued into "Come Back, Be Here" and then "Maroon."
London is the only city on the tour where Swift is stopping twice. Some worry the arrangement may represent a swan song of sorts, while others think it just reflects a new era in Swift's bond with the Big Smoke. Whether "So Long, London" turns out to be a final chapter or a bookend to her valentine to the city, the song "London Boy," Eras is arriving as an emotional milestone.
"Her relationship now kind of assumes London won't be somewhere she will be. It's not like there is an American football player living here," said Maggie Fekete, 22, a Canadian graduate student who credits the London references in Swift's music with orienting her when she moved to the city three years ago. "I think there will be a lot less London in her music, which is sad."
Stella Elgood, 25, of London, said Friday she assumed Swift would sing "So Long, London" at some point during her eight nights in the city but that Swift "will always be welcome."
"Especially since she dated Harry Styles, she's been here in the Zeitgeist," Elgood said.
For those who haven't been paying attention, Swift had a series of romances with famous British citizens (including Styles in 2012) that ended last year, when she started dating Kansas City Chiefs tight end Travis Kelce. The speculation surrounding "So Long, London" and a mournful companion song that mentions a London pub, "The Black Dog," stems from the 2023 breakup of Swift and English actor Joe Alwyn, who were together for over six years.
Alwyn is assumed to have inspired "London Boy," a song from her 2019 album "Lover." A special-edition "Lover" CD included what appeared to be a January 2017 diary entry in which Swift talked about being "essentially based in London" but trying to lay low. British tabloids later reported that Swift spent much of the COVID-19 pandemic sheltering with Alwyn in north London.
The Sun newspaper reported in December that the multiple Grammy-winner had bought a large property in the area and was remodeling it to be her base in Europe. After Swift released "The Tortured Poets Department" last month, however, a writer for the British edition of ELLE magazine observed that Londoners had an opening "for an all-American A-lister who can slot into her place in our collective consciousness."
"We had Swift before we lost her to her record-breaking, box office-breaking Eras Tour and now, it would appear that her vacant position has been filled by Zendaya," writer Naomi May playfully posited before listing the various locations the American actor had been spotted with her longtime boyfriend, British actor Tom Holland.
Either way, the capital is putting on quite a show of its own to make sure Swift and her fans feel appreciated. Guides are offering walking, bus and taxi tours that retrace her footsteps, including a kebab shop whose owner says his establishment is supplying sandwiches for the singer and her crew on Friday.
Before the end of August, Swifties can partake in a full diet of Swift-themed brunches and dance parties, or ride the London Eye Ferris wheel accompanied by a string quartet playing her music. Souvenir stalls in Camden Market, one of the places mentioned in "London Boy," stocked up on Swift-specific caps, T-shirts, bags and stickers in preparation.
Amy Unsworth, 34, who is from a small town near Manchester, England, and was born a month before Swift, said Friday that the singer's ties to the U.K. and vice versa extend beyond the capital.
"I feel like as a Northerner I have an affinity with her," Unsworth said, noting that Swift wrote many of the songs on her "Evermore" album while in England's Lake District with Alwyn.
"It's hard to know how she feels right now, being back, given her history."
Unsworth isn't worried Swift will turn her back on the U.K. Swift said from the stage that her British fans "have been some of the most supportive people in my corner since I started making music." Swift performed in London for the first time at age 17, when she appeared at the student union of Kings College London.
"I think she will come back" after Eras, Unsworth said. "She has too many dedicated fans not to come back. She's built up too much momentum here to just forget about us."
Zachary Hourihane, who co-hosts a Swift podcast called "Evolution of a Snake" and posts YouTube and TikTok videos under the name Swiftologist, said Thursday that it's too soon to know whether the singer will retain her honorary citizenship or part ways with London. As her fans know all too well, only time will tell with Taylor.
"Taylor is someone who retraces her steps a lot. Things are never really over with her. She likes to revisit things that have finished," he said. "Let's be realistic about it. Her relationship, even if it is, 'so long, goodbye,' she has good reason to be in London and good money to make there."

Mette says Taylor Swift's 'prowess is unreal' ahead of her opening London Eras Tour slot
When Mette takes the Wembley Stadium stage to open the first of Taylor Swift's Eras Tour of five shows, it wonât be her debut at one of the most famous venues in the world. But it will be the first time sheâs there with a microphone in hand.
Starting in 2014, Mette toured the world with Pharrell Williams as one of The Baes, his renowned dance troupe. Summer Sonic in Japan, Glastonbury in England and other massive festivals around the globe â Mette has had plenty of opportunities to perform in front of tens of thousands.
But when she becomes part of the Eras Tour lineage on June 21, it will be different.
âIâm going to be so present on that stage,â she says. âTwenty-five minutes is going to go by fast .â
Metteâs debut EP, âMETTENARRATIVE,â arrived last fall and launched the world-beat-pop single, âMamaâs Eyes,â which earned her a prestigious Ivor Novello award nomination this year. Her single, âBet,â is a slice of irresistible dance-pop with a funk groove, and sheâs readying the release of three more songs, âMuscle,â âComing of Ageâ and âSmall World.â
Need a break? Play the USA TODAY Daily Crossword Puzzle.
But despite her quickly thriving musical pivot, she and Swift initially crossed paths when both were exploring a film opportunity â the critically mauled 2019 film version of âCats .â
So who is Mette and why did Swift choose her for a coveted opening slot?
Mette admires Taylor Swift's âcreative prowessâ
Mette, 33, says the combination of performing at a show with not only the biggest artist in the world, but fellow opening act Paramore is âone of the many incredible circles of life surrounding me right now.â
She recalls attending the Vans Warped Tour in the mid-'00s and seeing Paramore perform and also remembers the year she turned 22 while at a dance camp in Duluth, Minnesota. Swiftâs anthem in tribute to her age at the time was ubiquitous on radio and Mette happily bounced on her bed, singing along.
Though she hasnât seen the Eras Tour live yet â Mette plans to head into the audience as soon as she can after performing â sheâs watched key moments online , with a keen eye toward Swiftâs dancers as well as the woman in the spotlight.
âHer work ethic, I admire it so much,â Mette says of Swift. âHer creative prowess is unreal. People talk about the fandemonium, but itâs a true passion connecting people around the world and sheâs delivering it in a 3 Âœ-hour show. Sheâs an athlete.â

Mette touts the inspiration of BeyonceÌ and Shakira
Born Mette Towley, she spent her childhood in the small town of Alexandria, Minnesota, and Baltimore, where she attended dance camp and learned about musical theater in movies such as âSinginâ in the Rain.â Itâs also where Mette, whose Scandinavian name references her fatherâs roots, found her âtribe in the performance world.â
Growing up mixed race in a provincial area of the Midwest (her recent song âDarling Driveâ harkens to a place where she felt protected by her white father and Black mother but also dealt with âchallenging and sometimes unfairâ experiences) and then finding comfort in the diversity of artsier Baltimore, Mette refers to her background as âstark intersections.â
She listened to pop and rock, appreciating the brilliance of Prince and also running home from school to watch âTRLâ on MTV and be awed by the women owning the video world at the time â Shakira, Destinyâs Child, Nelly Furtado, Gwen Stefani â and soaking in their auras.
BeyonceÌ and Shakira left impressions on her creative brain and remain idols â Mette can recollect BeyonceÌâs âRing the Alarmâ VMAs performance with awed clarity.
âThey rent space in my head,â she says with a laugh. âIâm always impressed by artists who continue to evolve and be unbridled by ideas when people say theyâre too old or they had a child or whatever. Itâs incredible to watch artists I grew up loving continue to strive for excellence.â
âBarbieâ movie opened Metteâs mind âto how fun music can beâ
Mette still has a foot in film and appears briefly in the Greta Gerwig blockbuster "Barbie" as Video Girl Barbie, sporting a tuft of long black curls and a hot pink zip-up jacket with zebra-stripe inlays.
She says her current hairstyle is inspired by her celluloid counterpart, but she also gleaned deeper lessons from her monthlong-plus time on set.
âThose costumes were so fun and I accessed a level of camp that informed my video for âVan Gogh,â â she says. âWorking on that set opened my mind to how fun music can be. I want to be taken seriously, yes, but the fun and the costumes and the hair and the makeup ⊠âBarbieâ was just really inspiring for the look Iâve been rocking.â
Mette also recalls quietly watching Gerwig at work and marveling at how the director never raised her voice to make a point.
âThe way she would reference a scene in a movie, like âThe Wizard of Oz,â sheâd draw you in with what was in her brain and bring that out of you. Sheâs so talented, so smart, such a badass,â Mette says. âIâm so grateful for the people Iâve met in my journey through film and dance and music who are so inspiring, but they can be so humble.â

Metteâs concert journey continues through the summer
The summer of Mette will continue as she hits the festival circuit in Europe, as well as Lollapalooza in Chicago in August.
Her second EP â home to the aforementioned singles â will be out in a few months and sheâs invigorated by the âlaunching padâ that her moment in the Swift-iverse might bring. Â
âItâs really incredible to me that all of these seeds I planted are really starting to grow,â Mette says. âThere are so many points in my life that are electrifying me and making me believe in my journey.â
